S
ummer vacation is here. Just a few months to enjoy before kids head back to the classroom. Back to routines, homework, and regular schedules. It’s not unusual to feel as though our days are starting to get a little too relaxed at the end of summer. Goldfish and fruit snacks may start to become meals. Maybe the TV is on for a little longer than we mean for it to be. We parents start to count down the days until school starts. But wait! What if there was something you could do to save the remaining days of summer? A way to get your kids energy back up, suburban family | subfam.com
or even your energy back up, and enjoy the last few days of school break? Sometimes all we need is exposure to an activity or event that we don’t do all of the time. A new experience can eliminate boredom pretty quickly. The end of summer vacation is the perfect time to pull out ideas you may have had about cool stuff to do with your kids – or let your kids do on their own – and use one or more of those to pump a little zest into the rest of your break. Here are a few ideas to help you get started. Painting. Projects that include lots of paint and several days to finish a painting simply do not happen all that often in school. Summer is a great time to let your kids enjoy the feel of a paintbrush in hand and create a piece of original art. Get July/August 2017
them a large surface to paint on (canvas, wood), paint, brushes, and then let them look for inspiration. Home improvement shows and magazines are great resources for ideas for paintings you can do at home. Kids can also paint fabric, dishes, or even old furniture that could use a facelift. Do you have a budding writer? Invite him or her to write a play or a movie. Encourage practice and memorizing lines. If there are several roles invite other kids to join in the fun and be actors. Are they ready to make videos? Give them a filming device and see what they can create. Planning a day trip. This is not meant to be labor intensive for mom and dad – this trip is up to the kids. Let your son or daughter use a map to find a place they would like to visit. Encourage answers to questions about distance, what you will do when you reach your destination, and what you will eat that day. Let them plan a trip and then actually take the trip, maybe even letting your kids read the map to help you get there. You will find pleny to choose from in the ‘Best Day Trips’ section in this issue. . Cooking day. Or baking day. Let your kids plan a meal for you and your family. They can look through cookbooks and choose recipes they would like to make, determine the ingredients needed, shop, prepare the meal, and serve.
Designing and building. What can your kids construct? Can they build an obstacle course in the backyard? Bridges for toy cars to ride over kiddie pools? Boats to race down a nearby creek? This can be as complicated as original designs or as simple as a craft kit from a local hobby store. Encourage conversations about the decisions that need to be made during the building process. When it’s time to try out the functionality of the finished product, maybe video tape the experience, interview the builder to get a live comment about how it went, and if desired, share with family and friends. Storing memories. Did your summer include a vacation this year? Do you have piles of pictures, printed or digital, that you would love to see organized into a scrapbook, photo album, or printed photo book? Photo storage and memory preservation projects can be completed with or without supervision. Invite your kids to create a piece of art that reflects a shared memory and the family can enjoy for years to come. The best part of any of these projects is that it gets kids engaged in activities that may require reading, following direction, solving problems, math, and even spatial reasoning. Not only will one of these cool projects get kids moving and grooving for the last days of summer, it can get them back into the routine of thinking like a student too.

Tip: One of the things that makes golf such a great game is that the entire family can play. Despite different skill levels, all players can participate and have fun. If you are playing golf with young children or those new to the game, I believe following the DisneyTM principle of viewing the world through the eyes of a child is appropriate. If your child can only hit the ball 50 yards, a 400-yard par 4 hole will look like a mile. At Pottawatomie, playing from the front tees allows kids to have a reasonable chance of success. To even out the odds, parents or those golfers will a little more experience, could try playing from the same tees and select a club that will allow you to hit the ball the same distance as your child. The reward will come when your child shouts with pride and joy that they hit it farther than you. With young junior golfers, spend time walking hole to hole with them to instill the great walk & talk aspect of the game in them. Tips to Make Outdoor Parties
E
ntertaining is one thing, but dazzling your guests with an outdoor party sensation is another. Summer can be the best time of year for outdoor parties. From twinkling lights to patterned tablecloths, every detail counts when it comes to impressing family and friends. It may feel like a lot of pressure to live up to expectations, but your party can be both simple and elegant with a few easy tips.
Start early
Early is never early enough when it comes to planning a rock-star summer gath ering. Check to see if you have enough utensils, make sure everything is in place and that there is enough food for your guests. Prepare weeks in advance, if possible, to make sure you have all the materials necessary to throw your dream outdoor party. 38 celebrate!

Spice up the invitations The perfect invitations can do three things. First is tell the basics: what, when and where. They can also tell guests what to bring along with them. Of course, invitations should also be appealing to the eye. This is your time to get a little creative and catch guests’ attention before the big event.
Show your style You want your guests to be as comfortable as possible. Make sure to dress tables and chairs with cushions and tablecloths. Mix it up and show off some of your personal flair with bright colors or fancy patterns. It’s easy to celebrate summer with styles that bring summer vibes to life.
Light up the party Brighten up the big day or night with some candles, lanterns or sparkling lights. In case of wind or weather, try to purchase covered candles to increase the chances the flame will stay lit. Make sure everyone can see the hard work you have put into the party.
Less mess meals No one likes messy meals, especially at a summer party. Put together a menu that isn’t
July/August 2017
stressful on the cook or stressful on your guests to eat. Dropping sauce on a white summer top is a party no-no.
Rain, rain, go away Always prepare for the worst. If clouds roll in on party day, make sure you’re ready. You can simply move the party indoors at the drop of a hat. Tents can also help keep the party going outdoors in case of precipitation.
Brighten it up It’s finally summer and that usually means flowers everywhere. Pick out an arrangement and make it the focal point of each table. The bright colors can draw your guests in and make them want to appreciate the beautiful nature around them.
Make your own games Give the kids something to do and make it fun. While the adults visit, the little ones need something to keep themselves busy. Whether it’s bubbles or water play in the heat, something to mix it up can help keep them occupied.
Jam it out Keep the music low and cool. There is no need to blast your speakers across the entire

yard. Play your favorite jams, but nothing too crazy. The music can really set the mood of the entire party and make or break the atmosphere.
Cool it down The summer heat is blazing and sometimes being outside can be miserable. Make sure your guests stay comfortable, even in the heat. Lay out handheld fans, lots of water and even some towels.Your guests will want to stay hydrated so they can party on. Find more summer party tips at eLivingToday.com.

Helping Kids Conquer Back to School Fears
“
By Gayla Grace
om, I’m not sure I should have signed up for Calculus and AP English,” says Adam, a high school junior. “I’ve heard both classes are really hard at my school.” Adam, a smart student who doesn’t want to disappoint his parents, lacks confidence in his ability to keep up with the work required in his upcoming classes. His main fear centers around academics.
going to a different middle school. She worries about who she’ll eat lunch with and whether she’ll have anyone to talk to in the mornings. Avery’s fears are focused on the social aspects of school.
Adam’s younger sister, Avery, is entering middle school and she’s nervous about her new school environment. Avery doesn’t make friends easily and many of her friends will be

As our kids head back to school, they have fears that range from finding the right bus after school to whether they’ll pass all their classes to graduate.A child’s personality, learning style, academic needs, social and emotional development and prior school experiences contribute to their fears and how they handle them. As parents, we can help our kids adjust to upcoming change and cope with whatever fears they face with the following strategies:

you concerned about as you start middle school-the lunch period, making new friends?” will get Avery talking. As she expresses her fears, her mom can acknowledge them by saying, “I know it can be scary to start a new school. Do you remember when we first moved here and how well you adjusted to your new school, new church, and new soccer program in the community?” She could also remind Avery of her wide base of friends in elementary school and encourage her to talk about how she made friends before. If a child has had a challenging or traumatic issue at school, it’s important to acknowledge the problem and help the child separate the past from the present. For instance, just because Avery encountered a mean-girl friendship last year that shattered her confidence doesn’t mean she can’t equip herself to manage it better in middle school. Stressful situa-

tions provide opportunities for kids to practice life skills, with our support and words of wisdom, that carry into adulthood. Minimize Drama Surrounding the Fear Adam’s fear of passing Calculus might bring up memories of our own failures in high school. When these thoughts surface, it’s best to keep a lid on how much we say. Positive statements that remind Adam of his previous successes in difficult classes will help dissipate his fears. Brainstorming ideas, such as using a tutor or his brainy friend next door when necessary, will empower him past his fear. Watching children struggle with fear sends many parents into rescue mode. Instead of helping them face their fear, the parent finds a way of escape. Adam doesn’t need to enroll in a different class because he’s nervous about Calculus. He needs reminders of how he has succeeded in the past and encouragement that will enable him to plunge through. “It’s a wise parent who realizes not only that our children watch us and repeat our words, but they also take their cues about how to react to life from us,” says Sherry Surratt in her Thriving Family article, “’Mom, I’m Scared.’”
“If we over-react, we send messages of worry that can enable our children’s fear.” We hinder our children from the maturing process when we magnify the problem and take over to solve it. Facing fears and learning how to cope with stressful situations is a normal part of healthy development. Teach Your Child to Ask for Help In a new school environment, it’s likely that Avery fears getting lost in the halls. First-day anxiety can be relieved by teaching her that help is only one question away.Teachers are prepared to help new students navigate large buildings with hard-tofind classrooms. Older students can also provide friendly guidance to newcomers. School counselors are equipped to provide assistance when students need answers to more difficult situations. If Avery encounters bullying from mean girls, asking for a counselor’s help alerts school administration of a problem that might need addressing on a larger scale and protects Avery from behavior that could escalate. Reminding kids they don’t have to face their fears alone gives them confidence to face a new environment and walk through challenging situations.
Help Your Child Build Resiliency Children who have a resilient attitude fare better with whatever life presents. Parents can’t predict every circumstance a child will encounter, but can help nurture strong attributes. The American Psychological Association offers the following ten tips to help build resilience in children and teens. (http://www.apa. org/helpcenter/resilience.aspx) • Make connections (friends, family support, church) • Have him or her help others (contribution) • Maintain a daily routine • Take a break (when overly stressed or worried) • Teach your child self-care • Move toward your goals • Nurture a positive self-view • Keep things in perspective and maintain a hopeful outlook • Look for opportunities for self-discovery • Accept that change is part of living Resiliency enables our kids to face their fears head on and gives them confidence to overcome them. Back to school fears are real and kids need help coping with what worries them. As parents, we can help our children adjust to upcoming change and conquer their fears by modeling and teaching healthy development skills and coping strategies.

BACK TO SCHOOL TIPS FOR KIDS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS By Sherry Wells
W
e’re finally get used to our summer routines and soon we have to start shopping for school supplies. A new school year means new teachers, new goals, and maybe even a new school. In order to help you and your child with special needs get off to a successful start of the new school year, consider these helpful back-to-school tips to make the transition a little easier and help reduce the child’s anxiety. Have a clear understanding of your child's individual educational program (IEP). Know when the IEP expires and if your child is up for reevaluation this year. If you're unsure, contact the school about holding an IEP review meeting. Being knowledgeable about your child's IEP and their disability can help you become a better advocate for them. Stay up-to-date on special education legislation, news, and events. Make digital copies of the IEP as you may have to send to various professionals throughout the year, and it's very handy to have them available via email.
dents; special arrangements can often be made in advance of the first day of school to help your child learn how to navigate the hallways as they go from class to class and how to get to and open their lockers in a timely fashion. It's important to establish and practice a routine that will happen in the mornings and evenings once school starts well in advance of the first day of school. Begin to practice getting up early enough to catch the bus, walking in a line, doing circle time. If your child takes the bus, call to make sure everything you expect to be in place is ready. Contact the school nurse ahead of time to make sure all medications and care plans are in place. Before school starts, make arrangements to take your child on a tour of the school so they can locate new classrooms, library, cafeteria, gym and restrooms. For middle and high school stu-
The key to a successful experience for our children lies in the partnership between school and home. Being an involved advocate who wants to work with the school will help to make the year as successful as possible for your child.
Set up a binder to keep track of special education meetings, documentation and sequential order of IEPs. Keep track of all communication; emails, phone calls, notes homes, conferences, with dates and times and nature of content. Attend the Back-to-School Night, Open House, and parent-teacher conferences. Meet school staff and the therapy team; ask teachers about their daily routines and how those routines are implemented. Communicate with the new teacher any helpful information about working with your child and any concerns that should be considered for their special education needs. Let the teacher know some proactive strategies teachers can have in place about your family structure, your child’s likes and dislikes, what sets her off and what calms her down. Ask the teacher to go over the daily classroom routine so that you can review it with your child. Discuss the services and accommodations with your child so that they know what to expect when school begins. July/August 2017

Sun safety
DUPAGE MEDICAL GROUP SHARES TOP TIPS FOR SUMMER SAFETY
Cooling off in the summer is a fun way to beat the heat. Before hitting the pool or beach, make sure to brush up on important reminders for protecting skin and keeping family members safe from heat exhaustion or heat stroke under the sun’s hot rays. caffeine and excessive alcoholic beverages
• Wear light clothing and wide brimmed hats • Remember to take breaks to move indoors or under the shade periodically
• Apply and re-apply sunscreen with a high

Water safety
Once it’s time to hit the water, whether on the beach or in a pool, remember water safety at all times. Here are some tips for the entire family to splash safely:
• Swim with a trained buddy or partner in safe areas only
• Use proper floatation devices • Do not drink and swim • Jump in feet first • Always supervise children in all bodies of water

uring the summer months’ children can take advantage of the warmer weather and longer days by spending more time outdoors doing yoga. In fact, yoga can be an effective tool for dealing with numerous childhood challenges such as autism, ADHD, obesity, and stress; it teaches not only physical skills such as flexibility, strength, stamina, balance, and coordination, but is also a valuable method of stress reduction through conscious breath and focus.
Your backyard is the perfect place for kids to not only be outside in the fresh air during the summer, but also to enjoy some fun yoga poses. Children with autism who practice yoga begin to feel more calm and comfortable in their bodies; as a result they begin to experience less anxiety and it becomes easier for them to control their behavior and emotions. These colorful pictures depicting how to do poses can be very helpful for children with autism, as they are visually oriented. Simply holding Tree pose, for instance, is very effective in helping autistic children focus and develop their attention. With their feet firmly planted on the ground and their mind focused on breathing, it is much easier to feel a sense of control over themselves and of their surroundings. . Tree pose is also a great posture for children with ADHD, as it helps them to build better focus and concentration. Yoga helps children
with ADHD by boosting attention and focus while reducing impulsivity and hyperactivity. Besides autism and ADHD, our youth are facing the challenge of obesity. Children are leading an increasingly sedentary lifestyle, and anecdotal reports suggest that yoga can reduce obesity. Kite pose can also be practiced outdoors, and is great for weight loss as it slims the waist and trims excess hip fat. 5 FACTS ABOUT SCOLIOSIS
S
coliosis is a common spine condition often found in adolescents. Roughly 3 million new cases of the condition are diagnosed in the United States each year, with a majority of them identified as idiopathic scoliosis — a type of scoliosis that presents in children between 10 to 12 years old.
there is currently no known cause or prevention method. It’s also very common for parents to ask if bad posture or heavy backpacks could have caused their child’s scoliosis. While these two things may be associated with other spine and back conditions, they do not cause scoliosis,.
1. Early diagnosis is key It’s important for parents to make sure their children are receiving regular checkups so that conditions like scoliosis can be diagnosed and managed early.
2. Most cases of scoliosis have no known cause. Scoliosis is a very interesting disease, because
4. Only a small percentage of scoliosis patients require treatment. Only about 30 percent require bracing, and about 10 percent actually require surgery, Sponseller assures. If your child is diagnosed with scoliosis, don’t be scared. Scoliosis is a very manageable condition when diagnosed early. For children who are still growing, an external torso brace can be used to prevent further worsening of the scoliosis while the child grows. Even when wearing a brace, most children live normal lives and participate in the same activities as their peers.
Paul Sponseller, M.D., pediatric orthopaedic expert and director of the Johns Hopkins Division of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery, provides five facts about scoliosis that all parents should know before their child’s next physical.
Common signs of scoliosis include uneven shoulders or hips, but it is generally a painless condition that may go unnoticed until a routine exam or physical.
child is the first in the family to develop the condition.
3. Scoliosis runs in families. When parents hear scoliosis runs in families, they often say, ‘But nobody in our family has it,’” says Sponseller. “But in reality, it’s likely that someone does or did and it went unnoticed because it was a very mild case.” Of course, there are also instances where a
5. Surgery, if needed, has good outcomes. While it may be a hard decision to make, having surgery done earlier tends to be simpler, as less of the spine needs to be fused. Perhaps more importantly, he says, is your child being in good overall health and having the support of his or her family during recovery. Parents should also work with their child’s school to determine a plan for the time the child will miss during recovery — usually one to two months. For more information go to www.hopkinsmedicine.org

ou’ve finally got your exercise regimen in place, and you’re seeing results from that daily run through the streets of your neighborhood, or your boot camp classes in the park. But what happens to your workout during the wilting hot summer months?
vary 10-15 degrees between the direct sunlight and the shade. And high humidity limits evaporative cooling, since the air is near saturated with water vapor.” Because of this, exercising in hot, humid weather can elevate the body’s core temperature to a dangerous level, resulting in muscle cramps, heat exhaustion, or even life-threatening heat stroke. (See Sidebar 2) Both Wells and Calandrino advise that the effects of dehydration and heat injuries are cumulative. Being dehydrated one day can lead to heat exhaustion the next. And if you’ve suffered heat exhaustion, it will take a while for your body to recover. “ You can avoid putting yourself at risk by being prepared,” says Calandrino.
It’s important to take the heat seriously, but that doesn’t mean you need to give up your healthy habits. A few adjustments to your schedule and routine can make all the difference. Hydration—it’s not all hype. Rule number one for successful summer workouts? Stay hydrated. Adam Wells, PhD and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, is an assistant professor of Exercise Science at the University of Central Florida. He says it’s a good idea to check your hydration level before you start exercising. “You may already be dehydrated prior to engaging in exercise,” says Wells. He adds that urine color is a good gauge—the darker your urine, the less well-hydrated you are. Light yellow (like chablis) means you’re good to go. Deep amber (like apple juice) means you’d better drink some fluids first. Wells says that sweat rates average between 1 and 1.5 liters per hour during exercise, and this volume must be matched by fluid intake to maintain proper hydration. Experts agree that during a typical workout (under 90 minutes), hydration can be maintained by sipping plain water. During high intensity or longer workouts (more than 2 hours), sports drinks and gels can help replace electrolytes, like sodium and potassium, which are lost through prolonged sweating. Stavros Kricos is a Certified Personal Trainer with the National Academy of Sports Medicine, and has been training athletes for ten years. “I cannot stress enough the importance of proper hydration,” he says. “You would be surprised how many things are affected—sleep, metabolism, organ function, recovery time, brain health, bone health.” Proper hydration also means not overdoing it. Hyponatremia (“water intoxication”) can 48 fitness first
result from rehydrating with large amounts of fluid, exceeding what a person sweats out and thus diluting electrolyte concentration. The condition can be life-threatening and is associated mostly with endurance sports; some say slower and smaller athletes are more at risk. However,Wells says hyponatremia is relatively rare and “ will likely occur only after extended exercise in the heat, and in conjunction with electrolyte loss through sweat.” Kricos agrees, saying, “While hyponatremia is a concern, it pales in comparison to the threat of dehydration.” (See Sidebar 1) Seek shadows, shade, and shelter. Adjust your schedule to avoid midday heat, find shade in your environment, and know when to celebrate the innovation of air con. Amy Calandrino has been running for about three years, specializing in shorter distances up to half marathons, combined with high intensity interval training. To stay on track through the summer, she says, “I train before 9am or after 5:30pm—never in the heat of the day. It only took one 9:30am run to realize that it's just too hot!” Wells adds, “ The heat index—how hot it actually feels when humidity is factored in—can suburban family | subfam.com
Fresh air and varied scenery add to the pleasure of exercising outdoors. But there are times when it’s just safer to jog on the treadmill or pedal over virtual hills in the spin room. If you don’t already have a membership, check the local gym for day passes and monthly specials. Many also offer deep discounts on class packages and memberships through Groupon and other daily deal sites. Slooowww down. Calandrino says she’s also learned to ease up her pace during the summer months. “I’ve found that slowing down during the hot season doesn’t hinder my long-term performance at all,” she says. “When the weather cools off again in the fall, I can’t wait for my pace to quicken. With consistent and conservative training, I’ve been setting new personal records each season.” There’s science to support Calandrino’s experience. Recent research suggests that when done correctly, training in the heat can improve subsequent performance under both hot and cool conditions. Just as with altitude acclimation, heat acclimation maximizes oxygen consumption. In addition, it decreases the body’s core temperature, both at rest and while exercising. Even if your pace feels sluggish during the summer, your body is still working hard and benefitting from the workout. Come cooler weather, you may be surprised to find that you’ve actually gained ground. July/August 2017
Sign up for an endurance race. Take on a new challenge, support a good cause or run/walk/roll for the health of it. GETTING HYDRATION RIGHT Fluid needs vary widely from person to person, and from day to day. Factors may include: physical condition, body type, duration/intensity of workout, weather. Tips for proper hydration: • Check weight before/after your workout. • Check urine color before/after your workout. • Sip water or a sports drink during exercise. • Avoid “chugging” your drink all at once. • Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages before/during exercise. The National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) recommends: • 14-22 ounces water 2 hours before exercise • 6-12 ounces water or sports drink every 15-20 minutes during exercise • After exercise, slowly drink 16-24 ounces water or sports drink for every pound lost during workout.
TIPS FOR SAFE SUMMER EXERCISE • Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing, and a hat with a brim. • Check the weather forecast and prepare. • Exercise with a buddy or group. • Heart disease, diabetes, and other medical conditions can hinder the body’s ability to withstand heat. Take extra precautions. • Be aware of medication side effects; some suppress thermoregulatory function and/or the ability to sweat. • Water sports rule! Try swimming, kayaking, or jogging in the surf. • Keep your cool with “cool wear.” (See cooling wraps, towels, headgear, vests, and more at www. polar-products.com or at your local sporting goods store.)

hances are that you have some sort of personal connection with the senior living industry. Either a grandparent, parent, aunt, or someone you know is either in a senior living community, or really should be. The industry has been around for a long time. But the quality of care has been stuck in the 1960s and has not kept up with times. Even though we call them communities, they are still run like institutions. No wonder our elders do not want to join any of them. After visiting more than 100 assisted living and memory care communities, Nader Kameli became convinced that a completely new approach was desperately needed— a more human approach. Kameli is CEO of Bright Oaks Group, an innovative assisted living company based in Illinois. “People do not want to lose control of their lives and become part of a pre-programmed life that is decided for them by strangers. I do not blame them. Would you want this for yourself?” Kameli said. To create Bright Oaks’ new concept of senior living, Nader and his colleagues went straight to the source, talking with hundreds of older adults and observing their way of life. From those who were happy, excited and energetic, learning what made them that way; and from those who were lonely and unengaged in life, learning what pushed them in that state of living. What emerged from the study was that social contact, purpose to wake-up in the morning, going to bed feeling good about the choices they made that day, and experiences they gathered as a result of those choices, gave life its meaning. This learning resulted in creation of a new way of living together at Bright Oaks. “What truly sets us apart is our new concept of Purposeful Family Living, in which we bring people together as members of one family—not as residents, care providers, or employees—and give them control to live life the way it should be,” he said. Bright Oaks family members live a life rich with social interaction, mental stimulation and personal growth in a community of people who have similar interests. Living at Bright Oaks means becoming a member of a multi-generational family living

in a household with others who feel that life is good and living is exciting. Bright Oaks leadership is certain that Purposeful Family Living can slow age-related decline and sometimes even reverse some of its effects, based on scientific evidence that shows higher quality of life comes from social stimulation and engagement, not medication and isolation. Bright Oaks is not a hotel, nor is it a holding place for the elderly. It is literally a community of neighborhoods, home to exceptional people of all ages. Bright Oaks families live together, work together and play together every day, sharing history and experiences with others, enriching everyone’s lives in the process. That’s why Bright Oaks communities are called Assisted Independence— because they provide independence at all times, with assistance on demand. Living as family at Bright Oaks comes with certain social responsibilities, just as within one’s own family. Younger, extended family members help their elders with physical challenges; older, wiser members offer the next generation the benefit of their wisdom and experience. “Most of all, everyone must respect others and appreciate the value they bring to the family,” Kameli said. All Bright Oaks communities offer the very latest in design, home-style architecture and lush landscaping, with meals served family-style, and amenities and luxuries to meet each family member’s needs and expectations. But what is truly unique at Bright Oaks is the way people live together, having control of their lives, and being there for each other as family members would.
