S

ummer is the epitome of staying up late and sleeping in. No school means less routine and more flexibility to do whatever it is that your kids want to do. Alarm clocks get stored away for the next few months and last minute calls for breakfast are no longer needed. While summer is a fun time for everyone to let loose, it can also be an open invitation for more sibling fights and a nasty case of “I’m bored” by well-meaning kiddos who are tired of playing with their toys. Check out this list of random ideas if ‘surviving the summer’ might be more up your alley.

1. Check out your local museums. If you’re fortunate enough to live in an area where there is no shortage of museums, call around to see what they’re offering for summer programs. Most, if not all museums offer some sort of summer camp or special exhibit during these out-of-school months. 2. Stop by a local creamery. Who doesn’t love ice cream? Before you head home from the park, surprise your kids with a trip to the ice cream shop. So often, we get wrapped up in dinnertime schedules dursuburban family | subfam.com

ing the school year that having something sweet before supper is a no-no. Hot summer months means cold summer treats. 3. Get your friends together for some playdates. It can be hard to work around your children’s extracurricular activities; especially if you have more than one child when it comes to pinning down specifics for playdates. Summer seems to be a more flexible time to get together so be intentional about reuniting with some old friends. It’s good for both you as the parent and your child. 4. Swimming is your new best friend. Make it a plan to swim on a daily basis. It’s a great way to get your kid more comfortable in the water and it beats staying indoors all day trying to keep your kids off of their electronics. Take a look at the ‘Waterparks & Pools’ section in this issue for lots of great options. 5. Depending on what part of the country you live in, you might be able to visit a few berry farms. Kids love July/August 2018

picking their own fruit; especially when they get to eat it as they go. This is such a fun way to get your kids outdoors this summer and as a bonus, you can teach your kids how to make apple pie, blueberry pie, or even strawberry pie. Pull out some old family recipes and start a new tradition with your kids. 6. Have a movie day. Face it. Sometimes it’s just too hot to be outside; even at the pool. Forego the usual screen time allotment for the day and set up an indoor camping pallet in your living room. Your kids will love it! Pop some popcorn and maybe even pick up a few boxes of movie theatre candy so your kids can enjoy a show from the comfort of their own home. Don’t limit it to just one movie…make a day of it. 7. Pick a craft. You know all of those random coloring books, broken crayons, stickers, and markers lying around? Grab all of them and set up a craft station at your kitchen table. Let your kids’ imaginations run wild and you’ll quickly see just how inspirational they can be. Your child might even realize he loves drawing cartoons or your daughter might continue writing her letters that she learned in kindergarten. Don’t be afraid to pull out the crafts. A mess can always be picked up. 8. Go for a hike. If hiking isn’t your thing, start small. Maybe you walk around your town square and play at the park or maybe you head to a forest preserve and make a day of it with your kids. Pack a lunch and have a picnic when you’re out exploring the world. Fresh air is good for everyone and you might be surprised at what your kids find on their hike. Collect tiny rocks to paint later that day or another day. The outdoors are a great way to get your children using their imaginations. The summer can be such a fun time to unwind with your kids but it can also be too much time for those who enjoy the structure and routine that the school months bring. Use this list as a starting point for things to do when you’re feeling like you don’t know what else to do with your kids. Summer survival doesn’t have to be a mindset every day. Think of these next few months as the best time for you and your kids to try new things while having the freedom to sleep in the next day. July/August 2018

Golf Links &Tips Golf is a great game for all ages. There is nothing like getting outside on the golf course with friends and smacking a ball around. Exercise, fresh air, friends and laughter - that is golf! So, make a tee time, grab your clubs and hit the links at one of these local courses. Arlington Lakes Golf Club

Peter Longo, PGA Teaching Professional 900 N.Wood Dale Rd. Addison, IL 60101 630-595-0071 DuPageGolf.com TUNNEL VISION - They say that the light at the end of a tunnel might be an oncoming train, so the term “tunnel vision” can be a dubious characteristic.

Golf Tip from your Arlington Professionals....Chip and Run Most golfers will have better results for short shots around the green by playing shots that land just on the putting surface and roll like putts to the hole. Choice of club can vary anywhere from a five-iron for a shot across the green all the way to a sand wedge, dependent on the length the ball needs to run. I often use the seven-iron for longer chips…..the pitching wedge if the hole is closer. You certainly want to pick a club that allows you to land the ball on the green….not in the fringe. The stroke is fairly short….just enough to get the ball on the green and rolling. You should experiment with different clubs to get a good feel. Play the ball back off your right foot and keep the left wrist leading for solid contact. Use this method for consistent play around the green….only use the “flop shot” with the sand wedge when extreme height is necessary to stop the ball quickly. Good luck saving strokes in 2018! If you need help with your short game, or any other aspect of the game, the PGA professionals of the AHPD are here to help make your golf more enjoyable. 30 out & about

The dictionary defines “tunnel vision” as: 1) an extreme narrowness of viewpoint, 2) single-minded concentration on one objective. There are historic examples of tunnel vision being a virtue and a vice, but I can tell you for sure that tunnel vision on the golf course leads to the pit more often than the penthouse. Most golfers, even some professionals, forget that one of the great attributes of golf is that there are always several ways to play every shot, so don’t limit yourself to one choice just out of habit. Before every shot, consider these two points: 1) Play into your strength. Use the shots you are most comfortable with, even if the situation calls for a different approach. You’ll do better with something you’re familiar with. 2) Think ahead one shot ...where is the best place to hit this one, so the next one will be easier? You’ll be amazed at your increased percentage of “good” shots ... meaning results, not style. Keep your mind open on the course. Leave the tunnels to trains and gophers.

Golf Center Des Plaines

Justin Bentley, PGA Professional GolfTec Des Plaines 353 N. River Road, Des Plaines 847-803-GOLF www.GolfCenterDesPlaines.com HITTING INTO THE WIND Like many aspects of golf, there are multiple ways to approach hitting shots into the wind.

1. If someone else is playing from the tee,

One is to flight the ball on a piercing trajectory that cuts through the breeze nicely. Another, perhaps easier method to hitting solid windbeaters, is pulling a longer club and swinging easy. Because, when many golfers are faced with shots into the wind, their first instinct is often to hit the same club as they normally would and swing as hard as possible. However, that can add unwanted spin to the ball and more directional variability, meaning it immediately balloons up in the air and lands short and likely offline. So, by taking one or two more clubs (a 5 or 6 iron, instead of a 7), moving the ball slightly farther back in your stance at address (the width of a ball or two) and maintaining a smooth swing instead of going all out, both spin and launch will remain low and the shot will be less affected by the wind. The simple point? Instead of swinging for the fences when it’s windy out, force yourself to pull a longer club and swing less than full to keep the ball below the breeze!

32 out & about

2. do not tee your ball until he has played. 3. Always stand still when another player is playing. Do not talk. 4. Be ready to play when it is your turn. 5. When you are playing slowly or looking for 6. a lost ball, ask the group behind you to play 7. through, so you do not slow everyone down. 8. Write down scores on the way to the next hole, not on the green you are leaving. 9. Never take more than one practice swing, if any.

traditional backyard barbecue is typically filled with a wide array of tempting foods that make it hard to keep a healthy eating plan on track. With a few simple modifications to your menu, you can transform your grilling party into a spread of better-for-you foods you can still enjoy.

4 watermelon wedges (1/2-inch thick slices, 4 inches wide at base) 16 Crunchmaster MultiGrain Sea Salt Crackers 1/4 cup finely crumbled feta cheese 1/4 cup prepared balsamic reduction 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh mint Get creative on the grill. An easy swap like chicken or pork instead of burgers and brats is an instant nutrition boost. Use wood chips or a marinade to create a main dish so tasty you’ll forget it’s a health-conscious choice. Put produce front and center. There’s no time like summer to enjoy the bounty of the garden, so pile on the veggies in place of dense, calorie-laden sides. A crisp, refreshing salad, lightly seasoned veggies on the grill and even fresh raw veggies with a light yogurt dip can all be healthier additions to your barbecue menu. Make apps amazing. A health-conscious meal doesn’t have to mean eliminating entire courses. Appetizers while you wait for the grill to heat are practically a requirement, after all. Instead of the typical rich, creamy dips, try a lighter approach, like these cracker canapes. Add a special touch with Crunchmaster crackers, which are gluten-free, non-GMO and full of flavor. Made with wholesome ingredients from trusted sources and available in Sea Salt, Roasted Vegetable, Applewood Smoked BBQ and Aged White Cheddar flavors, these snacks are crafted to fit healthy lifestyles.

ant to ensure your child’s future success? Katherine Ludwig says that the path to success in the future may look a lot different from what you’d think. Here are eight ways to rethink your backto-school plan that will help kids develop the skills they’re going to need in the future. For many families, going back to school means an end to summer slack and a return to tighter schedules, homework haranguing, high achievement expectations, and much less free time. July/August 2018

If you’re like most parents, you may already be gearing up for serious lectures about grades, study habits, college readiness, and that running rhetorical question: Do you want to end up flipping burgers for the rest of your life? Or maybe if your kid is already highly driven, you’re getting ready to assist in every possible way— financial and otherwise—to assure his highest achievement, whether it’s hiring tutors or running him around to a litany of extracurricular activities, and yourself ragged in the process. In either case, you may think you’re paving the way for your kid’s future success, but Katherine Ludwig, coauthor along with Ed Hess of Humility Is the New Smart: Rethinking Human Excellence in the Smart Machine Age (BerrettKoehler Publishers, 2017, ISBN: 978-1-62656875-4, $27.95), says you’re not. In fact, she says that parents who are overly focused on suburban family | subfam.com

the traditional markers of school success— academic excellence and college-applicationpadding at the expense of everything else—are actually doing kids a disservice. “Also, burger flipping literally won’t be an option for many people in the very near future thanks to advances in cheap robotics,” shares Ludwig. “By the time today’s young people enter college or the workforce, the nature of work will be radically different across the board. Technology is expected to automate and massively displace most of what Americans are currently paid to do in both blue collar and white collar industries. Within in a decade or two, unemployment could be as high as 50 percent in this country. No field or skill is safe from encroaching automation due to artificial intelligence—not even computer science or software development.” education central 37

There’s a growing consensus among technology experts and economists that the jobs and skills safest from automation include social and emotional engagement in service to, care of, or collaboration with other human beings and the kind of critical, creative, and innovative thinking needed to diagnose and solve complex problems and improve other people’s lives. Organizations are expected to drastically reduce headcount, and most humans who do work will be doing so on a contingent, part-time, or consulting basis, requiring them to forge strong human networks and relationships.

would this look like in your own household? Would it mean caring a little less about GPA and a little more about helping your child discover her own academic interests and strengths? Would it require you to stop micromanaging homework and be more willing to let kids develop into independent, self-sufficient learners even if it means they screw up and suffer academic consequences sometimes? Would it mean saving your highest praise not for when your child makes high scores in school or on the field, but for when she exerts extra effort, challenges herself, learns from mistakes, and bounces back from failure?

There’s no linear road to success in that kind of highly volatile, complex, and uncertain environment. To thrive in the future, today’s kids need to become intrinsically motivated, highly adaptable, lifelong learners who are curious and open-minded enough to think critically and innovatively; resilient enough to experiment, create, fail, and learn from mistakes; and be the kind of humble and socially and emotionally intelligent people who tend to think less about themselves and more about others in order to care about, create for, or collaborate with them.

Let them struggle and make mistakes. Creativity and learning are not linear. Failure tolerance and resilience are not skills of efficiency. They require exploration, experimenting, false starts, and often failure. They stem from curiosity, flexibility, and intrinsic motivation, not from the constant pressure to perform, be perfect, or respond to extrinsic carrots and sticks. And they won’t develop if you’re always swooping in to save them from inconvenience, embarrassment, or negative repercussions.

Our culture actually encourages contradictory mindsets and behaviors—a preoccupation with individual achievements, competitiveness, and self-interest—and our system of schooling and standardized testing rewards knowing more and making fewer mistakes than others rather than learning, creating, experimenting, or caring about the needs of others. “In many ways, we’re stuck as a society in continuing to prepare kids for routine jobs in the industrial or knowledge economies that are soon to be obsolete,” says Ludwig. “In fact, kids are growing up more self-centered, less adaptable, less resilient, and therefore arguably even less prepared than previous generations for the kinds of mindsets, skills, and behaviors they’ll need in the future. “It will take some time for educational institutions and American culture to fully adapt to the new realities of technological automation and the future of work and create a new story about what it means to be a successful human being,” she adds. “Parents, however, can play a big role in counteracting the outdated messaging and revamping priorities for the new school year even if it requires going against the grain of other families.” With your child’s future preparedness in mind, here are eight ways to rethink your back-toschool routine. Focus on learning, not achievement. What suburban family | subfam.com

“Make it a point not to show up at school with forgotten homework or lunches this year,” suggests Ludwig. “Don’t run to the store at 9 p.m. because your kid just remembered that she needs poster board for a project due the next day. She’ll learn far more from the consequences of missing the deadline than from having you save her grade.” Emphasize kindness. The future world of work won’t need all-knowing, self-focused, Type A competitive types. It will need creative, compassionate, and open-minded people who listen well to and care deeply about others—what they think, how they feel, and what they need. In other words, kids need to develop a profound sense of humility, empathy, and a greater focus on others than themselves. Consider how you might inadvertently foster self-interest or hyper-competitiveness in your kids during the school year and how you might prioritize less selfabsorption and more kindness and compassion instead. If you find yourself regularly pointing out to your child that so-and-so or even a sibling is doing better or achieving more with the intention of motivating him, stop. This only fuels disdain for others and ego protection and emphasizes competitiveness more than collaboration. “Don’t just celebrate individual achievements, but also good teamwork,” says Ludwig. “Don’t just talk about being ‘kind’ in the abstract. Give kids tactical ways to practice it. For instance, encourage your daughter July/August 2018

to invite the child who sits alone to join her lunch table. Make it a regular dinner ritual to ask how she’s gone out of her way to help others most recently and share your own regular acts of kindness.” When you see unkind behavior, nip it in the bud. Pay close attention to their behavior toward and with other people, and how they talk about others. Because kids are smart enough to walk the straight and narrow when they think you’re watching, their typical way of behaving socially and emotionally may not always be obvious. You should, for example, monitor their social media activity and discuss any mean or unkind behavior you see exhibited by them or others. Help them connect their strengths and interests to the service of others. Leave more time in their weekly schedules to put the needs of others first—through volunteer tutoring, coaching, or community projects, for example. “This shouldn’t be viewed as a nice-to-have only if and when they have the time, but a top priority,” says Ludwig. “And volunteer opportunities shouldn’t be chosen based on what’s most attractive to college admissions panels. Help your kid find ways to serve others in a manner that is personally meaningful to her.”

July/August 2018

Make sure kids still have regular household chores. Just because they’re back in school doesn’t mean they should get out of doing their fair share at home. Think of the household as your child’s first foray into collaboration. In a high-functioning team, no one player is more important than the others, so don’t treat your child like the center of the family universe. “Don’t do everything for him under the assumption that it’s what’s best for him (e.g., because he needs to study or is tired from practice),” shares Ludwig. “Kids need to learn how to balance their individual pursuits with their responsibilities to others, and they need to learn how to take care of themselves and put the needs of others first sometimes.” Encourage kids to try out different clubs and activities and pursue various interests... Don’t push a particular activity because you think it will look great on their résumés. You want them to develop a lifelong love of learning, a willingness to pursue new challenges, and selfmotivation, not a mentality of seeking only your approval or extrinsic awards and praise. ...But don’t let their schedules get out of control. Chances are that if you’re following the crowd of concerned parents, your weekly family schedule has become frenetic. If kids or

suburban family | subfam.com

teens are going straight from school to extracurricular activities to homework to bed with no breaks nearly every day of the week, you should figure out at least one way to slow things down this year. Collaborate with your child or teen to cut back on extracurricular or sports obligations in order to carve out more downtime or family time during the week. Perhaps it’s also time to drop an advanced or AP class to decrease the homework load. “It’s likely that tough calls will need to be made, and kids may object,” says Ludwig, “but it will be necessary to send the right message about priorities and give kids the time to hone the social and emotional behaviors and skills they’ll really need to succeed.” “Breaking the old rules and adapting to the new realities of success won’t happen overnight,” says Ludwig. “But it is imperative that we reconsider our priorities so our kids are better prepared for the kinds of mindsets, skills, and behaviors they’ll need in the future—and the new school year is the perfect time to start.” For more information, please visit edhltd.com and katherineludwig.com.

5 Reasons Pre-School Years are a Prime Time for Learning Much of the discussion about education focuses on the K-12 years, but some early childhood education experts suggest serious learning can start even earlier and pay dividends for the child in years to come. “Young children have the capacity at a very young age to be academically challenged, and we need to educate them strongly during those years instead of waiting until they are older,” says Alise McGregor, founder of Little Newtons (littlenewtons.com), an early education center . “Children’s minds are like sponges when they are very young. Under age 5 is the most important time for development and our best opportunity to set up children for success. If we strongly educate children at a very young age, while their brains are so pliable, by the time they reach kindergarten, their brain capacity is much higher.” Recent research confirms that the first five years of life are particularly important for the development of the child's brain. Harvard University’s Center on the Developing Child reports that in the first few years, more than 1 million new neural connections are formed every second, building the brain’s architecture. This growth of the brain’s network establishes a fertile foundation for learning, thus an opportunity to be better prepared for grade school and beyond, experts say. One analysis of several studies, “Impacts of Early Childhood Education on Medium- and Long-term Education,” showed that children exposed to high-quality pre-kindergarten education performed better academically in later years. Early education also led to higher graduation rates, fewer special education placements and less grade retention. McGregor suggests five reasons parents should consider ramping up their pre-K child’s education: • Socialization. Socialization with people other than the child’s family in a safe environment is an essential foundational element. “It’s 40 education central

important to introduce our children to other children and support their transition into their own friendship groups, and the earlier we do this, it helps children overcome shyness and gain self-confidence,” McGregor says. • Personal experiences. These assist the brain’s organizational development and functioning in many situations, helping children develop learning skills as well as social and emotional abilities. “A good earlyeducation center creates an environment where imagination, love and innovation all come together for a daily adventure,” McGregor says. • Enthusiasm for Learning. Lessons can be given in a fun and exciting way that will encourage children to be effective learners. “Feeling inspired and excited to learn takes root in preschool,” McGregor says, “and can last a lifetime.” • Learning respect for others. A fundamental building block for happiness, friendships and success in life starts early by learning how to share, cooperate, take turns and be nice. “By carrying on conversations, following rules, listening, accepting consequences of actions, the child learns early how to start getting along in the world,” McGregor says. • Resilience. It’s important that early childhood educators and parents work together to develop resilience in children as early as possible. “By creating a consistent and stable environment with clear expectations and predictable consequences, children can develop skills in managing themselves and their emotions,” McGregor says. “They may experience bumps, bruises or losing a game, but this is the foundation for building coping strategies for greater challenges in life.” “The first five years of life are the most critical,” McGregor says. “It is far easier to train a child than it is to fix a broken adult.”

How Gum Disease Is At The Root Of 5 Serious Health Issues

Y

our dentist keeps warning you about bleeding or inflamed gums for a reason. They can be a gateway to serious health issues.

disease is nearly equal to high blood pressure as a source of causing strokes,” Katz says. • Cancer. “Bacteria swells the gums, and it can cause similar reactions to other tissues,” Katz says. A study published in Cancer Research found that some of the same types of bacteria that trigger periodontal disease may also be linked to a higher risk of esophageal cancer. Another investigation, in the Annals of Oncology, found that men with an advanced form of periodontitis were 45 percent more likely to get diagnosed with cancer. “More proof you are simply endangering yourself while leaving bad gums unattended, allowing bacteria to spread,” Katz says.

Periodontal disease, the result of infections and inflammations of the gums, affects nearly 50 percent of U.S. adults aged 30 and older, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The problem increases with age; 70 percent of U.S. adults 65 and over have some form of periodontal disease. Those sizable portions of the population are at increased risk heart disease, stroke, cancer, erectile dysfunction, and prostate problems. “Lousy gums can lead to more health concerns than many people may realize,” says Dr. Harold Katz, a dentist, bacteriologist and developer of TheraBreath Healthy Gums Oral Rinse (therabreath.com). “The bacteria in our mouths can spread throughout the body, and the results can be devastating. “When you brush, floss and rinse regularly, you are doing more than caring for your teeth and gums. You are also taking care of your overall health.” Katz says major health concerns researchers have associated with gum disease include: • Heart disease. Several studies have shown a link between periodontitis and heart July/August 2018

• Erectile dysfunction. Research has suggested there’s a connection between systemic inflammation – the kind that could be caused by that traveling bacteria in your mouth – and increased risk of developing impotence. In research from Taiwan, men with erectile dysfunction were 79 percent more likely to have been diagnosed with chronic periodontal disease. disease. “The same bacteria causing periodontitis symptoms like inflammation, bleeding, and bone loss around teeth can travel through the bloodstream to the arteries,” Katz says. “Bacteria can latch onto the walls of the arteries and cause small blood clots, increasing the risk of restricted blood flow to the heart.” • Stroke. The findings from a study titled “Impacts Of Periodontitis On Nonfatal Ischemic Stroke” showed that patients who suffered a stroke also had evidence of an oral infection. “Research has indicated that gum suburban family | subfam.com

• Prostate-specific antigen (PSA). When the prostate becomes inflamed or infected, PSA levels increase, notes the American Academy of Periodontology. “The AAP states that men with indicators of periodontal disease tend to have higher levels of PSA, as well as more inflammation of the prostate,” Katz says. That can lead to a condition known as prostatitis, which can be manifest in painful irritation, difficult ejaculation, and urination urgency. “It’s simple: Maintaining healthy gums increases your chances of a healthy body,” Katz says. “Poor oral hygiene causes infection of the gums. It can send toxins into the bloodstream. It’s being proven that having good oral hygiene is one of the most important preventative health measures one can take.” family wellness 41

DuPage Medical Group Shares Tips for Summer Safety

S

ummer’s in full swing and schedules are busier than ever. That’s why DuPage Medical Group put together a few basic wellness topics that are essential for keeping your children (and yourself) healthy and happy. Rested & Ready Establishing strong sleep habits in your children can have a lasting impact. School-age children between 5 and 12 should be getting 10 to 11 hours each night, and teens should get at least 9. Grade school into high school is when sleep deprivation becomes common, thanks to increased activities, technology consumption and social interaction. Set limits on such stimuli, especially one hour 42 family wellness

before sleep. Establish consistent bedtime routines and ensure that your child’s room is quiet with a comfortable temperature. Food for Thought Making healthy choices at mealtime can help your children avoid future issues such as diabetes or high blood pressure and cholesterol. Pay attention to where their calories are coming from, limiting added sugars and solid fats. Get organized by writing down menu ideas for the week, and try to involve your kids so they’ll feel more interested. An ideal meal should be half vegetables and fruit, with the other half split evenly between healthy proteins and whole grains. Get adventurous! There are plenty of non-traditional foods that are still very healthy – think: hummus, egg salad or guacamole. Screen Sense Your kids are growing up in a digital age, so it’s also important to find a good balance when suburban family | subfam.com

it comes to screen time. This is more about monitoring their media and finding alternatives. Try to establish tech-free time where the whole family is away from screens, creating a balance with socialization and activities such as family exercise, play dates, sports or outdoor exploration. Also consider mixing in stimulating options like board games and puzzles. And set an example by limiting your own screen time overall. Fitness Tips Every Teen

(and their Parent)

T

here’s a lot of good reasons for teens to engage in exercising regularly and stay fit. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that students who are physically active tend to have better grades, that higher physical fitness levels are associated with improved cognitive performance, and that those who participate in physical activities have fewer disciplinary problems. Add to that the fact that they will be laying the foundation for a healthy lifestyle and creating great habits, and it’s a great deal all around.Yet many teens and their parents have questions about fitness that may be holding them back. July/August 2018

Should Read “The benefits of being a fit teen are plentiful, but it’s important to also know how to help reduce injury risks and stay motivated over the long haul,” explains Coach Sarah Walls, personal trainer and owner of SAPT Strength & Performance Training, Inc., who is also the strength and conditioning coach for WNBA’s Washington Mystics. “Being fit and healthy is more than just exercising, so it’s a good idea to learn more about what you need to do to be healthy all around.” Here are 5 fitness tips every teen should read: 1. Eat brain food. This is the good stuff, which is the unprocessed, whole foods, which include things like salads, poultry, lean meats, eggs, healthy fats, etc. Unprocessed foods are packed with vitamins and nutrients that will keep you sharp mentally and physically fit, too. 2. Train to be more useful. Going to the gym to work on your “abs” and “beach muscles” is usually done with endless sit-ups and biceps curls, but you can get the same effect by training to be more athletic, faster, and generally more useful in life, which means working to get your entire body stronger. You can work with a personal trainer to put together a routine that meets these needs and goals that are tailored specifically for you. 3. Go into Do Not Disturb mode. A big part of mental fitness is the ability to step away from the phone calls, texts, and Instagram feeds. Your mind will keep you feeling better when you walk away from those things suburban family | subfam.com

more often. Take some time to go for a walk or spend time playing with your dog, as these kinds of things are good for your body and your mind. 4. Appreciate that nothing happens overnight. When embarking on a fitness routine, it helps to celebrate the small victories that come with the little daily improvements. Yes, you may want to get a big bench press or increase your vertical jump by several inches - both are worthy pursuits, but both also take time and dedication. Learn to love the small changes and watch how they lead to meeting big goals. 5. Beware of the changes. Fitness has changed a lot in 20 years, so be careful whose advice you take. There are plenty of well-intended coaches and parents who dole out advice that is at best antiquated and at worst downright dangerous. Listen to your body, ask questions, and seek out expert advice when you need it! “The teen years are a great time to work on fitness and for laying the foundation for a healthy body and future,” added Coach Walls. “The more you know about what it takes, the less you are looking for an overnight fix. Getting fit, whether you are a teen or a senior citizen, takes time, patience, and dedication. But it’s worth it!” Sarah Walls has over 15 years experience in coaching and personal training. To learn more, visit saptstrength.com. fitness first 45
