Simple Boredom Busters for the Summer Break By Karyn Robinson-Renaud

S

chool is going to be out before you know it and sending the kids to camp every week isn’t practical for all of us. Figuring out what to do during the days or weeks the kids are not in camp, can be stressful. Make it more manageable by maintaining as many of your typical routines as possible. Then fill in the gaps with activities that are based on your kids’ interests, what you already have at home and lowcost community events. Tiffany, mother of three children ages six, nine, and twelve, found that having a simple plan for the week her children were not in camps was 6 seasons

a life saver for her. Her eldest loved everything to do with bikes. Last year he jumped at the chance to work with his father in the family bike business. The two younger girls liked swimming and bugs, so Tiffany organized the week around related activities. She signed the girls up for swimming every day at the community center and she found a drop-in science center that had a bug exhibit. The rest of the day was taken up with their typical daily routines (meals, chores, bath and bed) plus free play and casual play dates.

for creating a summer break that is fun for your kids and low-stress for you.

To create your own plan, use a calendar template that goes from Monday – Sunday and has time slots from morning to evening. Fill in the standard activities you do every day, such as wake up and bed times, meal times and chores. Think through what time of day your kids play well on their own and block that off as free-play time on the schedule. With the help of your kids, create a list of 3-5 things they are really into. Now, check out the list below to see which categories your child’s interests fall into. Even if your child doesn’t fall into one of the categories below, you can still get inspiration and tips

The Book Worm: Gather books from the library that your child would enjoy reading at home. Encourage them to build on what they read by using their imagination and their toys. If your child loves being dramatic, set up simple supplies for making puppets for a puppet show based on the book they read. If they are more into building things, encourage them to recreate objects or scenes from the story with their Lego or play dough. Some classic children’s authors also have fun activities you can download from their website. Try www. seussville.com and www.mousecookiebooks. com/mouseCookieBooks.html

suburban family | subfam.com

The Athlete: Check out your local community center for ideas that match your child’s interests. Some community centers have supervised drop-in times where they offer sports or games for an hour or two. Community centers also tend to have increased hours for public swimming. Having friends over to play basketball or ball hockey in the driveway is a simple but fun option as well.

The Dancer: Create a playlist of your child’s favorite songs or borrow music from the library. Have your child invite a few friends over for a dance play date. They could do a dance off or play freeze dance. They could also watch child-friendly music videos and try to copy the dances. Better yet, you can encourage them to choreograph their own dances and perform them for each other. If you have some fun accessories or clothes that you don’t mind the kids using, offer them as costumes for their performances. The Baker: Do you have a child that loves to mix stuff up? Channel that energy into baking something yummy. There are many ways of doing this depending on how long (or short) you want this activity to go. If your child is pretty focused, consider having them be a part of the process from start to finish. If your child tends to be very energetic or you have more than one child involved, decide ahead of time what part they can do that will be fun for them and not a huge headache for you. For example, you could measure all the ingredients out and they pour them in and stir. Or you bake it and they decorate it. Or you do everything and they do all the washing up after… just kidding. The Altruist: Some children love helping others. Look for opportunities to nurture this instinct. You can volunteer as a family at a food bank, nursing home or animal shelter. If your child is older and the organization is well supervised, your child may be able to volunteer on their own.

With traffic-free trips to fun destinations like the beach, unlimited rides Saturday and Sunday for just $10, and free rides for up to three kids 11 and under with each adult through Labor Day, Metra is

The Nature Buff: Is one of your kids into hiking or just being in the woods? If you are also lucky enough to have trails near you, take advantage of this. You can do this a few times over the week. Mix it up by just hiking one day and going on a scavenger hunt in the woods another day. If appropriate, collect stuff that can be made into a craft back home. On yet another day, consider bike riding through the trail. The Playground Enthusiast: Adults and kids alike get bored of the playgrounds in their own community. If distance and weather permits, why not check out a neighboring community for the day. Look up which playgrounds are best before going. If that information is not available, look up the location of the local schools, they usually have public playgrounds. Before heading home, have a picnic in the area or go to a restaurant as a treat. Golf Links & Tips Golf is a great game for all ages. There is nothing like getting outside on the golf course with friends and smacking a ball around. Exercise, fresh air, friends and laughter - that is golf! So, make a tee time, grab your clubs and hit the links at one of these local courses.

Golf Links & Tips

Golf Center Des Plaines Justin Bentley, PGA Professional GolfTec - Des Plaines 353 N. River Road, Des Plaines • 847-803-GOLF www.GolfCenterDesPlaines.com Limit Your Three-Putts! If there’s one place where average golfers can quickly cut strokes from their scores, it’s on the green. Luckily, we have the perfect exercise to pinpoint exactly where your putting needs work.

Three skills go into putting: green reading, distance control, and starting direction. You need to put all three to the test. 1) Place a ball 15 to 20 feet from the hole. Find a putt with a slight break, and place a tee in the ground even with the hole at the apex of how much you think the putt will break. This will serve as the line you are aiming to start your putt on. 2) Set up a “gate” with two tees 4 inches apart on your intended line about a foot in front of the ball. The idea is to roll the ball through the gate, to give you feedback on your starting direction. 3) If your putts come up short of the hole, spend time on distance control. If you hit the gate right off the bat, work on face and path control. If your ball didn’t break like you thought, practice green reading.

Play it safe with these tips Adjust your swing The entire body is used to execute a golf swing in a complex and coordinated movement. When this movement is repeated frequently, significant stress is placed on the same muscles, tendons and joints. Over time, this can result in injury.

Chip and Run Most golfers will have better results for short shots around the green by playing shots that land just on the putting surface and roll like putts to the hole. Choice of club can vary anywhere from a five-iron for a shot across the green all the way to a sand wedge, dependent on the length the ball needs to run. I often use the seven-iron for longer chips…the pitching wedge if the hole is closer. You certainly want to pick a club that allows you to land the ball on the green…not in the fringe. The stroke is fairly short…just enough to get the ball on the green and rolling. You should experiment with different clubs to get a good feel. Play the ball back off your right foot and keep the left wrist leading for solid contact. Use this method for consistent play around the green…only use the “flop shot” with the sand wedge when extreme height is necessary to stop the ball quickly. Good luck saving strokes in 2019! If you need help with your short game, or any other aspect of the game, the PGA professionals of the AHPD are here to help make your golf more enjoyable.

July/August 2019

Understanding the mechanics behind your golf swing can help you prevent golf injuries. Try to: Use proper posture. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and rotated slightly outward, and with your knees slightly bent. Hold your spine relatively straight; your trunk should be tilted forward, but most of that movement should come from your hips. Avoid hunching over the ball, which may contribute to neck and back strain. Stay smooth. The power of a golf swing comes from force transferred smoothly through all the muscle groups, from your ankles to your wrists. If you depend on one part of your body for your hitting power, you may be more prone to injuries. For example, overemphasizing your wrists during your swing can lead to golfer's elbow — a strain of the muscles on the inside of the forearm. Don't overswing. If you swing the club too hard or too fast, you may stress your joints. Relax and take a nice, easy swing at the ball. The best golfers have consistent — not necessarily fast — swing tempos. If you want to reduce the risk of golf injuries, consider taking lessons. What you learn about your golf swing may even help you shave strokes from your score.

S

ummer is known as that lazy, relaxing time of year. While all kids deserve a break, they still need structure and stimulating activities that nurture their growth and development. Vinay Saranga M.D., a child psychiatrist and founder of Saranga Comprehensive Psychiatry (www.srangapsychiatrycom) offers some pro tips to keep in mind when it comes to your kids this summer. Create A Summer Schedule: You don’t have to schedule something for every second of the day. The idea is to develop a predictable but flexible daily schedule that can help children thrive. Remember, sometimes boredom can be a trigger for bad behavior. The idea is to still have a routine but know that it’s okay to be a little laid back when it comes to sticking to it. Create A Calendar: Make it visible to your entire family. Write down daily activities and include a chore/activity chart. This helps children understand what’s expected of them. It also helps enrich their sense of responsibility and integrity all while building their confidence.

Some Downtime Is Good: Remember that long days at the pool/beach can cause exhaustion which leads to frustration and overwhelm. Figure out what the right amount of activity is to stimulate your child and incorporate enjoyable activities into their summer routine.

Don’t Skip Reading: Reading should be part of their everyday routine this summer. Of course, the goal of reading is to make it enjoyed. Get your child involved by going to a local library and scouting out the latest book by their favorite author.

Keep them social. Summer camps, group play and trips to the local playground are all ways to entertain children without screen time. Social settings often encourage imaginary play and creativity all while developing social skills that are essential for a child’s development.

Sleep Is Still Essential: Sleep, especially at a young age, is essential for healthy growth and brain development. We all benefit from a good night’s rest! Even if you extend bedtime during the summer, make sure your child is getting the recommended amount of sleep each night. Try not to get too far off of their school routine because it will be back in session before you know it!

Incorporate nature. Let nature be your inspiration this summer! Get your children outdoors for some fresh air. Plan a game of hideand-seek or set up a nature scavenger hunt that will keep them entertained in a healthy way. Make time for family: Our kids grow up so quickly, so make time to enjoy the summer as a family no matter how old your kids are. Whether planning a vacation out of state or simply a day trip to the beach, the best activities are enjoyed together.

Cut Back On Screen Time: Sometimes it’s too easy just to turn on the TV.When they’re not swimming or riding bikes, find something produc-

To remain stylish and keep your party going, consider these tips for fun and festive home entertaining.

Staying organized is key while entertaining guests in your home. Try to plan out every detail before the big event, which can allow things to go more smoothly on the big day. As you think out your plan ahead of time, making lists can be a helpful way to stay organized and ensure you get everything done. List out your guests, what needs to be picked up from the store and possible decorations you might need to buy or craft yourself. The possibilities can seem endless, but it’s important to have a plan in place before you start putting things together.

There are numerous ways your style can be shown while entertaining. One way is to pick a theme or theme-related food dishes. One way to show your theme is through decorations. Placing them throughout your home can give the party some life and help guests get into the overall theme of the party.

Transforming your home can be made sim-

July/August 2019

pler by changing the lighting. It’s typical for lights to be dimmed for parties to set a more relaxed mood. Other ideas include using candles, lamps or even hanging lanterns if you are entertaining outside. Make sure it’s bright enough so everyone can see, but dimmed enough to set the mood for the evening’s events.

Pick music that matches your theme and inspires that same feel throughout the house. If you’re going for a fun, energetic atmosphere, try something with a quick tempo, such as pop. If you’re wanting to relax, go for subtler, soothing tones. Try making your playlist before you entertain and listen to it a few times through, that way you can know what to expect and how guests will react to your music selections.

Through all the anxiety and stress of entertainment planning, make sure you take time to enjoy yourself during the time guests are in your home. Some guests will notice if you’re not having a good time. Smile and remember to be present in the moment.

ack to School is always a weird time of year for families. Everyone is on varying levels of dreading going back and looking forward to it - oftentimes, it’s a mix of both! And since this transition is something that we have to do every single year, it’s a good idea to seek out some strategies and ideas to help make things go as smoothly as possible.

dropping them off, who is picking them up, and what will happen when they get home.

Smoothing out the Logistics Don’t wait until the last minute to figure out what your school days as a family will look like. Plan ahead and make sure that the whole family is on the same page. Your kids will enjoy the comfort in knowing what their days will look like. They will want to know who is

Addressing Any Worries Too often kids worry to themselves in silence without bringing their concerns to their parents. It’s our jobs as parents to check in with them and help them express things that they might be worrying about or even have questions about. There are many unknowns when

This is also your chance to optimize your own schedule and look into getting into a better routine. Plan out your own days in a way that will optimize your time. I love the laid-back approach that I’m able to take to Summer break, but I am always itching to dive back into more structure and a more organized work schedule once school starts up again! It can also be really helpful to minimize the extracurriculars in the Fall as everyone adjusts back to school schedules. Early mornings and long days of learning can make for some very tired kids so you don’t want to add in extras until you’re sure that your child is up for it.

heading into a new school year, but many of those questions/worries/problems have answers and solutions! It can also be really helpful to involve your kid in coming up with solutions for their concerns. If they are worried about their new classmates, you can brainstorm some fun stories and conversation starters that they could use to connect with new friends. If they are worried about their teacher, maybe you could both write an email together introducing your child and asking the teacher for three of her favorite things as a way to make her seem friendly and human. While many of your child’s concerns are probably small and seem trivial, it does not feel that way to them! It’s important to give appropriate weight to their worries and help them get through things in a positive way. Highlighting the Positives As adults, it can be tough to go back to work after a week vacation so just imagine what it’s like for kids after having the whole summer off!! ing as we get closer to the start of the school year. Late nights don’t work as well for kids that have a full day of school ahead of them!

School isn’t all bad. Which friends are you excited to see? What art projects do you think you’ll get to do this year? What is something that you really want to learn about this year in school?

It’s important to start adjusting sleep schedules gradually as you get closer to the beginning of the school year. You can’t expect your child to adapt overnight. You don’t need the schedule to be exactly the same as the school year or even be super rigid about things, but it can be helpful to start easing bedtime a bit earlier and setting alarms for earlier each day until you get to a point where you are close to a realistic schedule for the school year.

It’s important to remind our children of all of the benefits of school. It is always amazing to me to see how much children learn throughout the course of a school year, and it can be fun for them to relive that and see how far they’ve come. It is reassuring for them to see that they are making progress - even though the days might seem monotonous. Working on Sleep Schedules Long summer days with plenty of sunshine are wonderful and so are the late evening festivities - sparklers, campfires, fireflies, etc! And while, the late summer nights work well for the season, we are often in for a rude awaken-

Make Your Child’s IEP Meeting a Success Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings are very important for children coping with special needs. These meetings outline goals for the child’s education and treatment, and it guides how services will be provided. You can also start working on a more consistent morning routine. Create some morning routine checklists for your kids to help encourage their independence from an early age and make your mornings run a bit smoother! Summer’s Not Over Yet! Part way through the summer, we already start to be bombarded with Back to School ads! Store shelves switch from beach towels and sand toys

“These meetings are very important because the IEP guides how the child will be educated and outlines goals for the child, interventions, and any accommodations and services that will be provided,” said Dodd White, president and CEO of the Episcopal Center for Children (ECC), a nonprofit organization providing therapeutic and special education services to children ages 5-14 in the greater Washington, DC area. “It’s important to review IEP meeting documents in advance before the meeting,” said White. “An IEP meeting brings together the entire IEP team assisting your child – educators, treatment providers, parents, the Local Education Agency (LEA) representative and others. Parents and guardians are an important part of that team. You are there to be an advocate for your child,” said White.

to backpacks and pencils super early, which can be a real downer for kids (and parents). Despite all of the buzz, it’s important to be realistic about the time that you do have left in the summer. And your kids will appreciate you acknowledging that, sharing it with them, and helping them make the most of it! What fun activities and adventures can you plan towards the end of the summer break to make sure you feel like you are really making the most of every day? What are a few of those items on your kids’ bucket lists that you want to make sure you squeeze in before school is back in session? And equally important, what would you all find relaxing and restorative so that you can start off the school year in the best way possible? So while Back to School season often comes with mixed emotions, there are ways to help ease the transition. Hope you enjoy the rest of your summer and get to tackle Back to School season with a renewed energy!

It’s important for parents and guardians to ask the right questions before, during and after an IEP meeting. Here are some questions to help: Question #1: When is the IEP meeting and how will I participate? At least 10 days before the IEP meeting, you should receive a letter of invitation. As soon as you can, RSVP for the meeting in writing. Inform the school if you will attend the meeting in person or by phone. If you are not available to attend the meeting at the proposed time, suggest alternative dates and times, as well as locations. Question #2: What documents will be discussed at the IEP meeting? At least 5 business days before the IEP meeting, you should receive draft documents. These may include the IEP, a behavior intervention plan (BIP), or evaluations of your child. Review

these documents carefully before the meeting. Question #3: Does this plan address my child’s education and treatment needs? Are the goals and objectives clear? Before the meeting, carefully review draft documents and write down your questions and notes. Review the diagnosis and examine the plan carefully to see how it addresses your child’s needs. Ask for clarification of education or treatment jargon if needed. Goals and objectives should be clear in the plan. Question #4: When will services be offered? Take the initiative to invite individuals who have relevant knowledge or expertise regarding your child (such as, family members, coaches, community support workers, social workers, attorneys, advocates, etc.). Let the school team know additional people will attend the meeting. Question #9: How can I have a healthy working relationship with the school, treatment providers, and the entire IEP team? Developing healthy and professional relationships with the school and treatment providers can help your child. Be open to discussing issues promptly, directly, honestly and courteously. Ask questions and listen carefully to answers. This will allow you to respond appropriately and avoid misunderstandings. Question #10: How can I support my child at home? How Healthy Are Your Child’s Eyes? By Cheryl Maguire

Y

ou need glasses,” the Ophthalmologist said to me. I was twelve years old. My mom was shocked since I never complained of unclear vision and no one else in our family had poor eyesight. The reason I went to the doctor is that I failed the school eye screening exam. My vision became gradually worse so I didn’t realize it wasn’t normal. I remember when I first wore glasses thinking to myself, “Everything seems so clear and crisp. I can see the tips of leaves on a tree and easily read street signs.” I thought it was normal to see the world a little bit blurry. August is Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month. This issue is important to me since my vision has significantly declined from the time of my initial diagnoses over thirty years ago. Even though I am nearsighted (which means I can only see close up and need glasses for far away), without my glasses or contact lens, 42 family wellness

I wouldn’t be able to read anything on a computer screen word document (it’s just a white blur with black lines) since my vision is so poor. I asked my eye doctor if I am considered legally blind. It turns out I’m not since my vision can still be corrected with glasses. According to the website LetsGoSee.net, one in four children has a vision problem. The CDC states that, Amblyopia, or lazy eye is the most common cause of vision loss in children who can be treated if caught early between the ages of 3 to 5 years old. The website Prevent Blindness found the most common vision disorders in children are myopia (nearsightedness trouble seeing far away), hyperopia (farsightedness trouble seeing close up), and astigmatism (blurry vision at all distances). The Urban Child Institute states that correcting poor vision can foster a child’s cognitive and social development. The American Optometric Association estimates 80% of a child’s learning happens through observation. In the classroom, most of the teaching is done by displaying the information. Children learn social skills from seeing facial expressions and body language. Similar to my experience, children may be unaware of the fact their vision is not normal. This may lead to feeling frustrated about being unable to see the words in a book or on the board in the classroom causing a child to act out. The American Optometric Assosuburban family | subfam.com

ciation states, “Some children with learning difficulties exhibit specific behaviors of hyperactivity and distractibility. These children are often labeled as having Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). However, undetected and untreated vision problems can elicit some of the very same signs and symptoms commonly attributed to ADHD. Due to these similarities, some children may be mislabeled as having ADHD when, in fact, they have an undetected vision problem.” Pediatric Optometry lists the following as signs that may indicate your child could have a vision problem: 1. Head Tilt: If your child has a problem with their ocular muscles or nerves they will attempt to compensate by tilting their head. 2. Sitting Too Close To The T.V.: If your child is nearsighted, they will attempt to compensate for this by moving closer to the T.V or other reading materials. 3. Avoidance of Reading: If your child has poor visual skills and eye teaming skills they will compensate for this by avoiding reading. Reading uses many complex eye movements and poor visual skills may cause your child to become frustrated easily. 4. Frequent Headaches: You child may have headaches because he/she is overJuly/August 2019

strained using all of their energy to align, focus and use their eyes. 5. Laterality Problem: If your child has poor directional skills and often confuses left and right it could be due to poor vision. Proper oculocentric location is dependent on vision and laterality depends, in part, upon oculocentric location. Clear Vision Accommodation Pursuits Saccades Vergence 100%

6. Finger Pointing: If your child has poor vision tracking skills they may use their finger to compensate for their poor tracking ability. 7. Can’t Copy From The Board: Your child may have difficulty with accommodation, the ability to change focus between far and near. This is essential for success in school. 8. Squinting: Your child may squint because this narrows a bundle of light entering the eye which allows for sharper vision. Your child may be squinting because this act compensates for blurry vision. 9. Poor Hand/Eye Coordination: This skill is required for everything from writing notes in class to playing ball with friends. Clear vision and adequate visual skills are required to create an accurate link between vision and other body movements. 10. Eye Rubbing / Squinting Rubbing: This is a basic response to ocular discomfort. It typically occurs when one's eyes are strained or have been working much too hard to complete a task. Squinting is used to narrow a bundle of light entering the eye which allows for sharper vision. Your child may be squinting because this act compensates for blurry vision. If your child is experiencing one of these symptoms schedule an eye exam with an eye doctor. There are two different types of eye doctors who are called ophthalmologists and optometrists. An ophthalmologist went to medical school and a 1-year internship followed by a 3-year residency. These types of doctors can provide total eye care services. An optometrist did not attend medical school. Instead, these types of doctors went to a 4-year professional program and received a doctor of optometry degree. The main focus of optometrists is to prescribe glasses and contact lenses. Due to my poor vision and the fact I have had other vision issues, I go to an ophthalmologist every two years for a checkup and to receive updated prescriptions for my glasses and contacts. Even though my mother didn’t think I would need glasses when I was twelve years old, she took me to see the eye doctor. I’m grateful she did. 44 family wellness

Skin cancer is one of the most preventable types of cancer, yet new data shows Americans aren’t “practicing safe sun.” In a recent survey, the American Academy of Dermatology found only half of Americans always or almost always protect themselves from the sun when they’re outside—increasing their risk for skin cancer, including melanoma. Skin cancer, is the most common cancer in the United States. It’s estimated that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime, and even one blistering sunburn during childhood or adolescence can nearly double a person’s chance of developing melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, later in life. “Nearly 20 Americans die from melanoma every day,” said board-certified dermatologist George J. Hruza, MD, MBA, FAAD, president of the AAD. “Exposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays is the most preventable risk factor for skin cancer, and there are many simple things you can do to protect yourself from the sun.” Dr. Hruza recommends practicing safe sun with a variety of protection methods any time someone is outdoors, including: • Seeking shade when appropriate, remembering that the sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. • Wearing protective clothing, such as a lightweight, long-sleeved shirt, pants, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, when possible. • Applying a broad-spectrum, waterresistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to all skin that clothing won’t cover. Remember to reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating. “It’s also important to remember to prosuburban family | subfam.com

tect parts of your body you think might not be getting any sun,” said Dr. Hruza. “Areas like the tops of your hands, bottoms of your feet or the part in your hair may not immediately come to mind when it comes to sun protection, but they are still vulnerable to dangerous sun damage.” Because skin cancer is highly treatable when caught early, Dr. Hruza also recommends performing regular skin self-exams and looking out for the ABCDEs – the warning signs of melanoma: • A is for Asymmetry: One half of the spot is unlike the other half. • B is for Border: The spot has an irregular, scalloped or poorly defined border. • C is for Color: The spot has varying colors from one area to the next, such as shades of tan, brown or black, or areas of white, red or blue. • D is for Diameter: While melanomas are usually greater than 6 millimeters — or about the size of a pencil eraser — when diagnosed, they can be smaller. • E is for Evolving: The spot looks different from the rest or is changing in size, shape or color. “If you find any new or suspicious spots on your skin, make an appointment to see a board-certified dermatologist,” said Dr. Hruza. “Spots that are changing, itching or bleeding could be a sign of skin cancer, and the earlier skin cancer is detected, the easier it is to treat.” To learn more about skin cancer prevention and detection and to find a free skin cancer screening near you, visit DoYouUseProtection.org. “Cycling helped me get my groove back.” --Rachel McLeod

While recovering from a bilateral mastectomy a few years ago, Rachel McLeod, a casual gym-goer, returned to spinning class at her local gym because her friends insisted on it. “At a time when I just wanted to give up on everything, my friends encouraged me to just go to class and listen to the music,” says the 42-year-old stay-at-home mom of two. Soon enough, though, McLeod, with a scarf tied around her head and bloated from steroid medication, was spinning again right along with her pals several times a week. In time, a friend suggested that McLeod participate in the Pan-Massachusetts Challenge, a 163-mile annual bike-a-thon cancer fundraiser that supports cancer research and treatment at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. The two-day bike race transverses the state of Massachusetts, from Wellesley to Provincetown. “The idea lodged in my head. The Pan-Mass Challenge became a goal.” For the next five months, McLeod attended spinning class three to four times each week with a purpose, to train for the Challenge while also riding outdoors regularly for 25 mile rides. McLeod wasn’t out to win. “My objective was to do

the race at my own pace,” she says. The race, which is held every August, proved to be grueling, especially toward the end of the second day, as McLeod tackled the undulating hills and dunes around Provincetown. Memories of her cancer treatment, including “big red needles” and the blue the chair she sat in during chemo treatment bubbled up. But other cyclists, especially those with photos of deceased loved ones taped to their backs, encouraged her to keep peddling. When McLeod finally crossed the finish line, “I definitely felt a huge sense of physical achievement.” Life Lesson: “Cycling gave me the mental wellbeing to deal with the memories of cancer treatment and put them behind me.” Want to cycle for a cause? “My teammates inspired me.” --Dale Parenti

Seven years ago, while undergoing radiation treatments for ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), the earliest form of breast cancer, Dale Parenti began dragon boating three days a week with a team of local breast cancer survivors, who call themselves Hope Afloat.“I had heard about dragon boat teams for breast cancer survivors and thought it sounded like fun,” says the 52 year old creative services manager. Dragon boating, a sport originating in China, involves 20 paddlers in a large boat, all paddling to cross the finish line first. Boats are adorned with a dragon head and a tail at race time. The sport is easy to learn. You don’t have to have good hand-eye coordination like you do for tennis. “I went to the first practice thinking, ‘I’m athletic. How bad can it be?’” Parenti says, underestimating the effort required. “Afterwards, I felt like such a wimp.” Parenti realized that with working long hours and taking care of her two kids, she was out of shape. But after just four dragon boat team practices, she could feel the years melting away. “I felt happier and more energetic, like

suburban family | subfam.com

I was 20 years younger. And I never experienced fatigued from my radiation treatments, which is a common side effect,” she says. “The push from my teammates spurred me on.” Parenti was hooked. She now competes in dragon boat races across the U.S., Canada and Australia. Life Lesson: “When you get breast cancer, you want to be the fighter for your family. You don’t want to look weak. But deep down, you’re always afraid it’s going to come back. The dragon boat team is one place where it’s okay to say, ‘I got a scare today,’ and everyone understands. I’m motivated by my team. We strengthen ourselves and support each other.” Interested in dragon boating? Visit the International Breast Cancer Paddlers’ Commission FB LIKE fill 12.17:Layout 1 12/15/17 at www.ibcpc.com.

“Thoroughbreds are usually wild and mares are notoriously difficult, so Abbey was everything I didn’t want in a horse,” she says. “It was a classic ‘what not to do if you want a horse’ scenario. But when I sat on her, I fell in love,” Hoag says. It turns out that Abbey, who Hoag kept a horse barn near her home, had been on good behavior that day. She proved to be as difficult as Hoag suspected. “It took me four months to be able to walk her out of her stall by herself,” Hoag says. Nonetheless, Hoag took Abbey out every day and began riding her regularly. Slowly, Abbey didn’t trust her.

Summer Running Tips Even the most committed of runners may struggle to run in the heat, People who do run during the summer season will do everything to try and avoid peak heat by running at dawn or in the evening, or by taking advantage of gyms where air conditioning is a thing. 1. Run early. Morning temperatures are usually the coolest during the summer. It also will give you a break from the strongest hours of sunlight. 2. Run late. If you aren’t a morning person, wait until the late evening when the sun is starting to set. The temps will be better than mid day and the humidity may dip too. 3. Less is best. Wear as little clothing as legally possible. There’s less chance for chafing. Stick to light colored, loose, wicking material clothing. 4. Wear a hat or visor and sunscreen. A hat or visor will protect your skin from the sun, and it will also help to keep your face cool. And always wear sunscreen to protect yuorself from skin cancer. 5. Slow down. Your body has to work extra hard in the heat and humidity running at a “normal” pace. 6. Start slow and end slow. A warm up prior to a run should always be done, but even more so when the temperatures are high. 7. Hit the trails. When the temperatures rise, asphalt and concrete absorb heat and radiate it back into your face. Trail running usually offers shade from trees. 9. Drink up. If you are running more than 75-90 minutes, carry a hand held water bottle or a hydration pack with you. Or stash water bottles along your intended route ahead of time if you don’t like carrying anything in your hands. Or plan your route along accessible drinking fountains.
