not cluttered with items that you use once or twice a year. Imagine cooking meals in a clean kitchen where you have counter space to chop, prepare, and dish meals! Organize Your Time Organizing the physical objects in your life is important, but organizing your time is the next major step. Planning out your time does take a little extra effort up-front; however, it quickly pays off when you are not rushing from activity to activity and missing deadlines or forgetting important details. Pay close attention to how much time certain tasks actually take you. Sometimes you will be surprised at how little time dreaded tasks take (like folding laundry), or you may be surprised at how much time you just spent scrolling through Instagram. Once you have a handle on how long different tasks take you, you can realistic plan out your days. Just don’t forget to leave room for those extra hiccups that always seem to occur just when you’re heading out the door. Imagine living in a world where you are not checking your car clock every few seconds worrying that you will be late. You can put yourself back in control of your day instead of feeling pulled in all different directions. You will be able to say yes to certain activities and politely decline others while being realistic about your time limits. Organize Your Mind Once you have other aspects of your life organized, you will find that your mind automatically becomes more clear. You will have space to brainstorm creative ideas, problem solve, and simply enjoy the moment that you are living at that current moment. You can continue to use other resources to empty out your brain – write lists, use smartphone apps, set alarms, use planners, etc. The goal is to get you to a state where you can enjoy the life that you have created for yourself. You work hard, and you deserve to be happy! Take the time and energy to organize your life so that you and your family can enjoy the benefits of calmer days. March/April 2020

ainbows are a sign that the sunny days of spring are on the way. Their colorful rays bring a smile to our hearts – much like our daughters do. If you are looking for a party theme for your birthday girl, a Rainbow Party is a wonderful way to celebrate. We’ve come up with four craft ideas, four games and menu of colorful foods and drink.
2. Friendship bracelets – Jewelry making is such a fun project with friends. Why not make friendship bracelets? Older girls might enjoy braiding colorful thread in a camp-style bracelet. Younger girls can use colorful plastic or glass beads and colorful ribbons to string them on. Depending on the age of the guests, you can use candy or cereal in place of beads.
lenge like recite the alphabet backward and the other one with a ticket to receive a prize for completing the challenge. Blow up the balloons and tie one to each girl’s ankle. On go, the girls will gently stomp on the balloons to break them, revealing the challenge. If your balloon is popped, you have to pick up the challenge paper and perform the challenge.
3. Sprinkle candy bark – Place melting white chocolate pieces on a thick paper plates. Heat in microwave until it is in a liquid form – 1 minute usually does the trick. Encourage the kids to add cake sprinkles or small candies like Nerds. Use toothpicks to swirl around drops of food coloring. When the girls are done decorating, refrigerate the candy until it is hard.
3. Fill the Cup – Fill a large bowl with colored loop cereal and place in the center of the table. Players each have five small cups in front of them. Using a regular sized spoon, players need to separate the cereal by color, placing 10 of each color in their cups. Challenge the older girls by making them hold the spoon in their mouths. You can also play this game with teams.
4. Solar rainbow candles – Collect clear jars or purchase from Goodwill. Gather up all your 1. SLPs Can Help With Autism Spectrum Disorder
S
peech-language pathologists (SLPs) are well-versed in preventing, assessing, diagnosing, and treating speech, language, social communication, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders in both children and adults. SLPs are experts in social communication, which is one of the defining criteria for autism. While the average age of diagnosis for autism is 5 years or older, an SLP can make a reliable diagnosis in 24 months. What Are Signs of Autism? Every child with autism is different. All will have problems with communication and social skills, but not in the same way. Autism is a spectrum disorder because it can cause mild problems, severe problems, or something in between. People with autism may focus on one topic or have some behaviors that they do over and over. Some may talk well but not be able to make friends, while others may not talk at all. A SLP can help navigate these differences. How Can I Have My Child Assessed by an SLP? An SLP is instrumental in finding out if your child has autism or a social (pragmatic) communication disorder. SLPs are often available in school systems for support. 14 education central
All children with autism have social communication problems. But, not all children with these problems have autism. Knowing which one your child has will help the SLP find the best treatment. While being non-verbal is not considered a defining trait of autism, speech delay is often one of the first signs – and SLPs are best equipped to give an in-depth look at your child’s abilities. Given this expertise, an SLP may be the first person to tell you that your child has autism. You Can Help Inform The Assessment Some of the most important information about your child will come from you. You can tell the SLP about what your child does well and where he or she has problems. The SLP will use different tests and watch how your child plays. The SLP may also want to talk to your child’s teacher or others who know about him or her. With treatment, an SLP has the ability to help your child: • Make sounds and speak words • Improve articulation and intelligibility • Have conversations • Ask and answer questions • Ask for help • Take turns in a conversation • Start or stop a conversation • Pay attention to what others do and not just to what she wants to suburban family | subfam.com
do • Play and get along with others • Understand and use gestures, like pointing • Follow directions • Look at books and tell stories • Write letters, words, and sentences These developments can help your child to: • Make and keep friends • Play with others and share toys • Understand how others feel • Focus with someone on the same object or event, called joint attention • Accept new foods - children with autism may not like the way foods look, taste, or smell, but effective communication can reduce outside frustrations. SLPs Can Help In Another Important Way If your child won’t talk, he could well need other means to communicate. SLPs are well trained in augmentative and alternative communication, or AAC, which help children who cannot talk or are very hard to understand. It can be used in a variety of settings: school, home, and other places. After working with an SLP, AAC may even help a child learn to talk. Children with autism can learn better social and communications kills. SLPscanhelp. leep-away camp was just what Ally needed in order to gain independence and confidence, marveled her mom, Sharon. “She found a whole new group of girls and had a ball; she’s had a hard time with girls beginning in grade 4,” Sharon says, “so it was great for her to bond with girls in a different setting.” Starting at age 9, Ally went away to camp for a week. The following summer she begged for it to be four. Her parents were delighted.

learning to let go yourself!) it’s time to start researching sleep-away camps. Week- or monthlong adventures away from home give kids opportunities to experience unique adventures they’d never find at home. Asking other parents what camps their kids attend can be helpful also; having a friend go with your child is a beautiful thing for parents leery of separation. To find a camp that fits your child’s needs, seek out opinions from friends and neighbors, ask teachers and church counselors, attend camp fairs and explore options on your own. Residential camps of all kinds and sizes are located all across the country, so there’s sure to be one your child can love and from which he can gain valuable skills.
Time away from parents helps kids learn how to make their own decisions without checking with Mom or Dad first, and residential camp provides the perfect training ground, says Michael Thompson in his book, Homesick and Happy: How Time Away From Parents Can Help a Child Grow (Random House; 2012).
Camp counselor Jamie Newman expresses enthusiasm for sending kids to camp. “Camp encourages kids to try new things and teaches them confidence through new experiences. They learn valuable life lessons when encouraged to work through their fears to try something even if it doesn’t feel comfortable to them. Also, when kids are thrown together in a cabin for a week, they’re forced to learn how to get along with others and often build lasting relationships that can continue when they return home.”
If you’d like your kids to develop maturity and gain independence (and if you’d like to begin

March/April 2020
1) Camp builds maturity and allows children the chance to make their own decisions in a safe, caring environment. Kids benefit from new relationships with camp counselors who care about them and want to help them with everyday struggles. 2) Camp forces kids to unplug from technology and enjoy the beauty and benefits of nature. Through outside activities, kids find new hobbies without academic pressure or expectations. Kids gain self-confidence through trying new things and discovering talents they didn’t know they had. 3) Camp teaches good sportsmanship by encouraging each child to be fair and kind.Team activities teach kids how to cooperate with each other and the value of getting along with others though working together and supporting one another. 4) Camp fosters new friendships with kids who come from varying backgrounds - helping kids gain an understanding of how others live outside their community. In a relaxed atmosphere, kids easily make friends while they play, sing, work, eat and bunk together. 5) Camps creates life-long memories of new adventures in places they’ve never experienced before. Camp offers carefree days where kids can learn how to thrive outside the structure of over-scheduled days. Parents and “Child sickness” When it comes to sending a child to sleepaway camp, plenty of parents say, “Well, she’s ready for camp, but I’m not ready for her to leave!” According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, homesickness is defined as “distress and functional impairment caused by an actual or anticipated separation from home and attachment objects such as parents.” For child sickness, the same can be true except it pertains to what parents experience when their child is away. Those who suffer from the condition feel some form of anxiety, sadness and nervousness, and most distinctly, obsessive preoccupation with thoughts of their child. “Parents today are more anxious than their peers were 20 and 30 years ago,” says Peg Smith, CEO of the American Camp Association. “That said, the partnerships between parents and camp directors have increased. Parents should share their concerns with camp directors who are prepared to respond with responsible, informed answers.” Tips for Letting Go • Let your child have trial runs being away from you by permitting sleepovers. • Don’t show anxiety to your child - it will make it hard on him. • Have a plan for yourself: Get a project done that you’ve never had time for, go on a trip with your spouse, etc. • Remember: two of the greatest gifts you can give your child are confidence and independence. ou’ve packed your kid for a trip before but, packing for sleepaway camp is a whole other challenge. Here’s how to get it done. BEFORE PACKING Follow the camp packing list to the letter. Make a separate list of items you need to purchase and schedule a time in your calendar to purchase these missing items. Get a sturdy footlocker trunk. It will be opened, closed, pushed, pulled, sat on, and lived out of daily. Label ALL of your kid(s)’ clothing, accessories, and gear. If you wish to save yourself some time and headache, Mabels Labels are a great option. PACKING Camp is about independence so, pack by category. Use gallon ziplock bags or packing cubes to separate undergarments, socks, tops, bottoms, swim gear, etc. Pack flip flops, water shoes, and tennis shoes towards the top since these shoes will likely be placed in a cubby or under the bed soon after arriving. Place sheets and towels on the very top since this is what they’ll be reaching for first to set up their bed or bunk. Pack bedding and/or a sleeping bag and pillow in a separate duffle. Organize toiletries in a handy caddy they can take to and from the shower with ease and wrap the caddy in a ziplock bag to avoid spillage prior to placing it in the trunk. Put batteries in devices prior to camp. Pack extras in labelled ziplock bags. Pack fun activities like cards, coloring and writing utensils, bracelet making supplies, etc. in zippered pouches. Pack colored pencils instead of crayons since the latter might melt in the heat. Pack letter writing supplies in a storage clipboard. Create pre-stamped and addressed envelopes ahead of time.

FINAL STEPS Put an inventory together of everything you packed and tape it to the inside of the trunk lid so your kid(s) and/or their camp counselor make sure s/he doesn’t leave anything behind. Tape a few meaningful pictures and a letter on the inside of the trunk lid as well. This will make for a nice surprise and keep those homesick feelings at bay. A
pril 20-24 is Every Kid Healthy Week which was created to celebrate school health and wellness achievements. Every Kid Healthy events promote healthy eating, nutrition education, physical activity, and physical education. A child’s health encompasses physical, mental and social well-being. It is important to maintain good overall health in children so they grow and develop appropriately. My grandfather used to say,“if you have your health you have everything.” If you and your child are healthy, you will have more energy, lower medical costs, improved moods, and live longer. Here are some ways to promote healthy habits within your child: Create a Bedtime Routine and Regular Bedtime: Sleep helps your brain function properly which improves learning. Studies show sleep deficiency increases the risk of obesity, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Receiving the proper amount of sleep promotes appropriate growth and development, improves social interactions and increases immunity against diseases. 28 family wellness
NIH recommends school-age children and teens should sleep for 9-10 hours per night. Bad sleep habits will affect both your physical and emotional health. One way to ensure your child is receiving enough sleep is to create a scheduled bedtime based on when they need to wake up in the morning. If you maintain the same bedtime every night it will be easier to fall asleep and create a healthy habit. Another way to help your child receive the proper amount of sleep is to have a bedtime routine a half-hour before the expected sleep time. This routine will help your child relax which would then lead to falling asleep easier. Some suggested bedtime routines are reading, a warm bath, drawing, listening to soothing music or other calming activities. Read Food Labels: According to the CDC childhood obesity has more than tripled since 1970. Childhood obesity has both short and long term effects on a child’s physical, social and emotional health. For this reason, it is important for a child to maintain a healthy weight. Reading and understanding food labels is a way for a child to figure out if a food is healthy to eat. The food label will demonstrate the number of calories, sugar, fat content and suburban family | subfam.com
also break down the percent of the recommended daily intake to help create a balanced diet. It also helps to become more aware of what you are eating since you might think a food is healthy only to learn it isn’t after reading the food label. You can find free printable worksheets to help your child understand a balanced diet here. Exercise with Your Kids: The CDC recommends children and teens should be physically active for 60 minutes per day. The physical activity should include aerobic, strengthening and bone strengthening activities. If you exercise with your child and select something you both view as fun, you will be more likely to do it. Some suggested family activities are walking, running, hiking, dancing, biking, and a workout class or video. Create a weekly scheduled routine to incorporate it into your life which would create a healthy habit. Limit Screen Time: Screen time consists of watching television, playing video games or using electronic devices. When a child is in front of a screen they are typically sedentary and not interacting with others. A research study at UCLA found when kids have too much screen time they have difficulty understanding other people’s emotions. Dr Leonard Epstein studied the effects of limiting screen time in March/April 2020
Where Hope and Healing Meet
At Shriners Hospitals for Children — Chicago,
our mission is simple: provide quality specialty care to children – regardless of their families’ ability to pay. For over 90 years, families with children in need of orthopaedic care, specialized plastic surgery, cleft lip and palate repair, physical rehabilitation, and spinal cord injury care have come through our doors with hopes of finding the very best pediatric specialty care. Under our roof, those hopes are answered every day — by physicians, nurses, and specialists using the latest technology, world-class research, and a collaborative, family-centered approach. It’s how the Shriners Hospital system has provided care for over 1.4 million children.

obese children. The findings demonstrate when screen time was limited the children consumed 300-1500 fewer calories. Both of these research studies demonstrate the importance of limiting screen time to help your child socially interact with others, eat fewer calories and be more physically active. Encourage Social Interactions: It is important to encourage your child to develop healthy relationships with peers and adults. Problem solving, managing friendships, and understanding emotions are necessary to for a child’s positive mental health. These skills will
also enable a child to learn more effectively in the classroom. Discuss Physical and Emotional Safety: According to the CDC one of the leading causes of death in children is car accidents. One study found over 600,000 children did not use the proper car seat or seat belt which could prevent death during a car accident. Other accidental deaths include drowning, fire/burns, guns, poisoning and suffocation. To prevent injuries and death it is important to discuss safety issues regarding all of these potentially dangerous situations.
Children and teenager may be in situations when they are offered drugs or subjected to physical or sexual abuse. It is important to discuss with your child healthy and appropriate relationships. Be a Healthy Role Model: Children and teens model their parent’s positive and negative behaviors. Research conducted at Duke University found kids were more likely to eat well and exercise if their parents modeled those behaviors. If you model a healthy lifestyle, your child will most likely lead one as well.
Easter is a great time to host a holiday brunch for friends and family. But typical breakfast-style foods can be carbohydrate-heavy and packed with ingredients that cause health problems for many people. “Cauliflower can help create elegant and delicious versions of your favorite breakfast dishes minus the gluten, grains, and other ingredients that can lead to inflammation, weight gain, and a host of other health issues,” says Amy Lacey, founder of Cali’flour Foods, and author of Cali’flour Kitchen: 125 Cauliflower-Based Recipes for the Carbs You Crave. After being diagnosed with lupus and other autoimmune conditions, she used dietary changes to combat her pain, inflammation, and other symptoms. Lacey shares two nutritious and unforgettable recipes that are easyto-prepare and will keep you and your loved ones healthy and provide plenty of energy for the Easter egg hunt.
Kale, Scallion, and Tomato Egg Muffins [Serves 4] Gluten-Free | Grain-Free | Paleo | Keto-Friendly | Vegetarian | Dairy-Free
1 Plant-Based Cali’flour Pizza Crust or Paleo Cali’flour Pizza Crust 6 large eggs 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 1/4 teaspoon ground turmeric 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 8 small cherry tomatoes, quartered 3 tablespoons finely chopped kale (from 1 small leaf) 1/2 small scallion (green part only), very thinly sliced Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Line 8 holes of a muf¬fin pan with paper cups. Using a 2 1/2-inch (6-cm) cookie cutter or the top of a drinking glass, cut out 8 circles from the crust. Press the crusts into the bottom and up the sides of the paper cups. If they tear, just press them together. In a medium bowl, beat the eggs lightly, then beat in the salt, turmeric, and pepper. Put the tomatoes and kale in the bottom of the muffin cups, then pour the beaten egg into the cups and top with the scallion. Bake for 15 to 20 min¬utes, until the eggs are set. Cool in the pan for 2 minutes, then serve. Store leftovers in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat in a toaster oven. 30 family wellness
Egg in a Basket [Serves 2] 1 Cali’flour Pizza Crust 2 teaspoons ghee or unsalted butter 2 large eggs Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 1/4 cup (30 g) shredded Cheddar or other melting cheese 2 strips bacon, cooked and crumbled (optional) Sriracha or other hot sauce (optional) Using a pizza wheel, cut the crust in half. Using a 3-inch (7.5-cm) cookie cutter or the top of a thin drinking glass, stamp out a hole from the middle of each crust half. Melt the ghee in a 12-inch (30.5-cm) skillet that has a lid over medium heat (or cook the baskets one at a time in a smaller skillet). Using a metal spatula, carefully place the crusts in the skillet, then crack an egg directly into each hole and season with salt and pep¬per. Scatter the cheese on the exposed crust, cover the pan, and cook until the whites are set and the cheese is melted, about 3 minutes. Using the metal spatula, remove from the pan to plates and top with the bacon and hot sauce, if using. SWAP To make this dish vegetarian: Skip the bacon. “Planning a special occasion meal that meets everyone’s dietary needs can be simple and fun,” concludes Lacey. “This Easter, give your loved ones a feast that delights their taste buds and promotes lasting health.” For more information, please visit califlourfoods.com.

Preparing For Your st 1 Race
A
re you considering running in a race, but unsure of how to tackle the challenge? Racing is not difficult when you have the right mindset and the proper tools.
Determine ahead of time what your fueling strategies are — do you need a nutritional bar before the race? What about water?
Running in any race requires dedication and preparation. You want to go the distance and cross that finish line. Whether you’re running in a 5K, half marathon or marathon, there are important steps you can take so you’re ready for the event:
3. Set a goal and a backup goal You may have a goal that you want to achieve on race day. But you might not feel your best or the weather may not cooperate. There are so many things out of your control that you should always set a goal and a backup goal.
1. Make sleep a priority Try to get at least seven to eight hours of sleep each night during your training. Listen to your body’s needs. Some people require more than that; some require less.
For example, a downpour on the day of the race will slow everyone down. As a result, you probably won’t hit the time you really want, but you could have a secondary target in mind to work toward.
But focus on being well-rested as race day approaches. Remember, a sleepless night can make you feel sluggish, groggy and dull. You’re aiming for alert and energized on race day.
4. Hydrate before and during the race As a runner, it’s vital for you to avoid dehydration. Plain old water is the best way to go. Water will help prevent your body from overheating. It’s a good idea to practice hydrating yourself before, during and after long runs. That way, you’ll know what’s necessary on race day.
2. Practice and plan It doesn’t matter how many miles your race will cover — preparation is the key to conquering any distance. Run several times a week to condition your body.
Experiment before the race with various types of running clothes and decide what’s most comfortable. Certain fabrics irritate some people’s skin. Make sure you avoid that issue on race day or you’’ll be in for a miserable marathon.
A good rule of thumb is to take a drink about 30 minutes before you run. Then take small sips throughout the race when your mouth is dry.
fitness first
5. Stay upbeat and positive Maintain a positive attitude during your training and leading up to your race. A positive mental attitude can put you on track for success and help you overcome any challenging situations you encounter. 6. Relax and enjoy the run Having jitters before a race is common. It’s a normal part of any competition. It means you care about your performance and want to do well. But there are things you can do to keep yourself calm and relaxed. One suggestion is to run with music you enjoy. Music allows you to think about something other than the task at hand and helps you relax. 7. Start out slow Finally, don’t try to set a land-speed record in your first mile out. It’s best to pace yourself. Start slowly and gradually increase your stride until you’re settled in your normal training pace. Get your doctor’s go-ahead Before you start training for any road race, it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor. He or she may have some running suggestions that suit your needs and can address any possible limitations you have. For more information visit clevelandclinic.org

The absolute best way to keep yourself running is to find a race in the 2020 Annual Race Guide. Just sign up, pay for it, and put it on your calendar. A fixed race date will help you stay focused, and keep you on a regular running schedule. Nothing feels better than crossing the finish line. A beginner can run any race — you just need to allow enough time to train for it. Check back for race updates in each bi-monthly edition.

HAMSTRING INJURIES By Dr. Michelle Fink

Have you ever felt tightness or pain in the back of your thigh as you run up a hill, perform speed drills or finish up a long run? If so you are probably overusing your hamstrings and creating soft tissue injury and/ or tendon pain. Your hamstrings work the hardest at the end of leg swing when it is working to slow your leg down and bring your foot back underneath you. Using your hamstrings eccentrically, which means they are contracting but lengthening at the same time, is a very difficult contraction for your hamstring to make and typical strength exercises do not train your hamstring in this way. The hamstring muscle is under more strain when you are sprinting, accelerating quickly, going uphill or if fatigued from a long run. Overuse of the hamstring muscle will lead to pain and injury if not addressed early and thoroughly. The key to a successful training season is injury prevention or quickly addressing pain before it limits your training. How can you avoid hamstring pain? Your need to stay strong. Runners often focus on strengthening the quadricep muscle but research supports that your hamstrings are equally important and should have the same strength as your quadriceps. Your hamstring strengthening routine should include exercises that train the hamstring muscle eccentrically. Examples of these exercises are nordic hamstring exercise, reverse planks, and single leg deadlifts. Additionally, you can help prevent hamstring strain by performing a dynamic warm up before your run, including such things as legs swings and dynamic hamstring walks. Ensuring proper warm up will decrease chances of muscle strain during the eccentric hamstring contractions in 38 fitness first
running. The literature also supports having your running mechanics evaluated by a physical therapist. Physical therapists are trained in gait and running mechanics as part of their education. They will be able to identify asymmetries and imbalances that could ultimately lead to injury. Often times changing cadence, heel strike, shoe wear, orthotic use or reducing ground reaction force in landing phase can be simple fixes that solve the problem. If symptoms of a hamstring injury occur your approach will need to change. The key concept to understand is that complete rest is not the answer. Rest decreases muscle use and reduces the strength and training you have worked so hard to develop. Active recovery will allow continued tissue loading and train the muscle for the high workload demand on your hamstring when you return to running. The optimal plan when pain begin is to add cross training, continue eccentric hamstring strengthening and also ensure you strengthen your gluteus muscles. If your pain is tolerable and you can train without modifying your form then you are safe to continue to train with these modifications. Returning to your desired pace and speed work as soon as possible is recommended. If pain continues to worsen this is when you should seek professional help. Physical therapists are trained to evaluate specific hamstring injuries and devise a comprehensive treatment for your recovery while minimizing loss of training. Dr. Michelle Fink, PT, DPT, cert MDT, owner of Perform Physical Therapy in Countryside, IL is an avid runner, 8 time Boston qualifier and cross country and track coach. You know the old adage, mind over matter. In running and racing, your mental toughness is just as important as your physical training. Many times it is the brain that allows or limits endurance performance rather than the body. Here are some ways to make your brain work with your body to have your best runs and races this season. 1) Plan for the Good and the Bad Take the time to make sure you have the ability, skill, and experience to complete the distance. If you know you have trained properly then you will see the race as a challenge instead of a fear. Write down your fears about the race and come up with strategies to pacify them. For example, if you fear the weather, plan ahead. Practice running in all types of weather. Bring multiple outfits so you’re ready for whatever the day brings. If you fear your
pace will be off, try using a pace bracelet and checking in every few miles. 2) Focus On Success Having confidence is key, so keeping a training diary is very helpful. Use it to look back at great training sessions you've had or successful shorter races you have run. Reflecting on these accomplishments will help you feel confident and ready to meet the demands of the race. Write down your strengths mentally, emotionally, and physically. Use those in the days leading up to your race when you start to feel nervous. 3) Visualize Do not focus on the bad.We all have trainings days or races that felt off. Successful athletes boost their confidence by using positive mantras and visualizations to push their negative thoughts away. Picture your successful race day often during your training and create a mantra to remind you of it, like “I can do it.” 4) Break It Down Break the race into small parts. Rather than thinking of the miles you have left, think about getting to the next aid station, running to the next lamp post, or getting to where your family and friends are cheering two blocks ahead. This helps you have small successes along the way and gives you a boost each time! 5) Enjoy! When Race Day finally comes, just let go! Forget about the end result, your competitors and just focus on doing YOUR BEST on that day. Use the crowd to energize you and be grateful for where you are and what you have done to get there.
