Why Gardening Can Be a Calming Activity

I

out & about

By Sandi Schwartz

absolutely love it when we can pick fruits and vegetables grown in our own backyard and savor them at our dinner table. We are fortunate enough to have a lemon tree in our backyard, and we’ve enjoyed making our own lemon water, lemonade, and dishes like lemon chicken. We have also dabbled in growing our own tomatoes and peppers, which the children absolutely love doing. It’s a wonderful experience for them to pick the produce and play a role in creating a healthy meal for our family that incorporates the food we grew ourselves. My children and I have also gotten a lot out of volunteering in a local community garden that serves a group of special needs adults in our community. During our visits, we have helped by planting seeds, weeding, and moving around vegetable plants in the garden. The best part is that the group uses what is grown in the garden to create meals that they serve in the local café that they run. Growing fruits and vegetables together as a family can be a fun, engaging, and calming activity. In addition to the general benefits of being outside with nature, gardening offers a healthy distraction, provides a chance for some light exercise, encourages children to eat healthier, and builds community. There are also some incredible new discoveries about how soil can help improve our mood. Let’s explore why we experience these mental health benefits of gardening a bit more deeply. Now’s the perfect time to start planning your spring garden,April is the best time to plant most vegetable seeds after the last frost. Be sure to check your gardening zone for last frost dates. March/April 2022

Time Outside The natural world offers solace and comfort unlike what we can find in any manmade environment. So, spending time in nature doing activities like gardening helps reduce our response to stress and allows us to recover from tense situations more quickly. More and more studies have been coming out that highlight the health benefits of spending time in nature. Research shows that contact with nature heals because it lets us unwind and boosts our body’s natural endorphins to relieve stress. Just 20 minutes a day can help us feel more relaxed and lift our mood! Some research has even looked specifically at the mental health benefits of gardening.A breakthrough study in the Journal of Environmental Psychology found that a healing garden at a children’s hospital in California had positive effects on users—about 85 percent reported feeling more relaxed, refreshed, or better able to cope after spending only 5 minutes in the garden. Healthy Distraction Another reason that gardening can be so calming is that it offers a healthy distraction. suburban family | subfam.com

One study showed that engaging with a garden distracts us from our worries and stops us from obsessing about our problems. Over 12 weeks, participants saw an improvement in their mood during and immediately after gardening, and three months later they still reported significant improvements. Another study showed that after 30 minutes of gardening, participants’ cortisol levels dropped and they felt happier after the activity.

Social Interaction Whether it’s just you bonding with your children in the garden, sharing your produce and gardening stories with friends and neighbors, or volunteering in a community garden, that social interaction also plays a major role in making us feel happier and calmer. Experts tell us that the most important way to feel happier is through positive relationships, so gardening can provide a vehicle for our children to connect with others over a healthy hobby.

Besides being a distraction from our worries, gardening is similar to art in that it provides an opportunity to get lost in the moment. Whether we call it mindfulness or flow, focusing on something we love and losing track of time can dull our worries significantly. Exercise Gardening also provides some light exercise (and possibly some more intense exercise if you’re doing some heavy lifting). Exercise clearly helps us feel happier and calmer, and there is tons of scientific research to back that up. When we move around and sweat a bit, our body produces feel-good neurotransmitters called endorphins. These chemicals in our brain act as natural painkillers, making us feel better and less stressed, and even give us that “natural high” feeling. Exercise also reduces the level of stress hormones in our body like adrenaline and cortisol, helping us feel calmer. So, don’t be shy about giving your kids some work to do in the garden that makes them move a bit, such as digging, lifting, and bending up and down. Healthier Food Choices Gardening also motivates us to eat healthier foods that make us feel better. When kids are invested in growing their own fruits and vegetables, they feel more connected and want to enjoy the “fruit of their labor.” By encouraging them to eat healthier through gardening, they

will hopefully choose foods that nourish them instead of junk foods filled with sugar. It’s important for children to eat less sugar for numerous health reasons, but also for their mental health. Sugary foods can increase anxiety and even cause our kids to feel gloomy.

Soil Recent research has found that the simple act of touching soil can reduce stress and improve mood. How incredible is that?! Yes, allowing our kids to play in the dirt can actually help them feel happier and calmer. This is because a type of bacteria in soil called mycobacterium vaccae has been shown to stimulate areas of the brain that produce serotonin, a hormone that makes us feel better. It thrives in soil that is enriched with organic matter like the fruits and vegetables you are growing in your garden. Researchers have found that eating trace amounts of soil on garden vegetables actually helps us manage stress and enhance brain function. When we garden, we can inhale and ingest these healthy bacteria. How can you add gardening to your child’s life? • Create a family garden in your backyard. You can engage your children in gardening by buying them their own gardening tools, asking them to pick out the types of produce they want to grow, and using the produce you grow to cook meals together. • If you don’t have the room or desire to create a garden in your own backyard, collaborate with a neighbor or purchase a plot at a local community garden to tend. • If starting a garden sounds intimidating, consider starting slow by growing a few herbs on your windowsill or one vegetable at a time in a large flower pot. • Look for opportunities to volunteer in a local community garden. Community gardens increase the amount of green space, build positive community interaction, and many also provide fresh produce to those in need. Your children will enjoy planting seeds, weeding, and picking fruits and vegetables. Sandi Schwartz, author of a new parenting book, Finding Ecohappiness: Fun Nature Activities to Help Your Kids Feel Happier and Calmer, prescribes nature-based fun to improve mental health and mood in children (and parents!) birthday party may look like just a birthday party to you now, but what I see is a breeding ground for life lessons kids can learn that will carry them through their lives to help make them successful, happy and kind. And aren’t those things that we really want for our kids anyway? Read on to check out a few teaching opportunities for your child’s next birthday party! Inclusiveness. It might not always be possible to just invite your child’s closest friends. Maybe their school has a policy about birthday party invitations that’s all about including everyone so hurt feelings are kept at a minimum. Maybe your child has cousins who are younger or older … or neighbors of all ages who are also their friends. If you’re okay with “the more the merrier,” then include young and old at this shin-dig and pop in your earplugs! Gratefulness. Nobody wants to hear, “I already have this” or “I didn’t want this” when they give someone a gift. Likewise, kids should not be opening gifts at breakneck speed and tossing them over their shoulders like they are rocks.Your kid should always be saying “thank you” sincerely and looking the gift giver in the eye. Some parents have their kid sit in a chair while they open the

gift while sitting right next to the gift giver so they can have a moment together to have some appreciation shown and a picture taken. Graciousness and disappointment. I’m lumping these two together because they seem to go hand in hand. The birthday child gets disappointed by not getting something they really wanted … or sometimes not getting anything they wanted at all during the entire party. That’s when it’s time to step in and talk about how disappointment is okay, but that we should be gracious about it. It’s kind of like being a sore loser versus being a happy loser … even though there is disappointment going on, you want your kid to learn how to still say thank you and show appreciation for the gift giver’s time and money or skills that went into the gift. Consideration. Yes, it’s your kid’s party, but consider where everyone would have a good time when planning your party venue. If it’s at your house, think up some fun games everyone might enjoy and build in plenty of time for just playing around. Have a friend with food allergies, such as gluten or dairy? Make sure to pick up something special for that friend … cookies or their own piece of cake; it’s easier than ever these days. They are probably used to bringing their own treat when they go to parties and will be surprised that you thought of them on your child’s special day. No, your kid isn’t spring for the cost or taking the time to drive to the store, but she is definitely watching you!

Sharing.Your kid may get some pretty good stash at his birthday party, and other kids are certainly going to want to play with the new goods. I’ve seen some parents not let their kid even open the gifts until after all the guests have left so they don’t have to deal with this conundrum, but I think that’s a mistake, and here’s why: it doesn’t teach the birthday kid anything, and I am all about teaching opportunities, even when they are inconvenient for me! Instead, explain to your kidlet pre-party that she is going to be getting some cool new stuff and that she can put some of her favorite things up right away but that she should share some of the things and play with them WITH her friends, not hoard and hide them all away! Listen, as an adult, I do not expect you to share your sweet new ride with your friends, but I know you will share a room in your home, your food, your coffee and maybe even a meal or some clothing. Again, the kids see what you do so practice what you preach! Giving back and donating. Not every kid is showered with gifts from parents, extended family and friends every year. Not every kid gets to even have a birthday party. And it’s also true that some kids barely get enough food to eat each day or don’t have any school supplies when it’s time to start school each year. So why not have your altruistic kid ask for gifts for someone else one year? In my town, our local food bank supplies a birthday cake and all the fixins as long as the guests bring canned goods, take the tour and help out for a bit. Also, if your child has a particular love for, say, animals … how about hosting a birthday party for or at a local animal shelter and — instead of presents — asking for donations like food and other supplies? Instead of lecturing, which we all know gets tuned out anyway, get your party on with some cool hidden lessons that will take your kid beyond their kid years and into a fun and full life!

Parents Should Consider Sending Their Child to Camp By Mary Ann Blair

W

ith summer calendars quickly filling up, it can be hard to try and squeeze in one more thing. But if you have never sent your kids to a summer camp, here are seven reasons why you should consider it! With so many options, it’s easy to find a great fit for your child. From sports camps and art camps to STEMbased camps and more traditional overnight options, summer camps are designed to serve a variety of ages and interests. The length of camp can range from a few mornings for younger kiddos to weeklong sleep-away camps for older kids. Local churches, school

districts, and other organizations like the YMCA, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Camp Fire, and 4-H offer a wide range of camps. With a little bit of research, you can easily find a camp well-suited for your child. Camps provide kids with experiences they might not have access to in “everyday” life. Horseback riding. Paddling a canoe across the lake. Wilderness survival. Conquering a ropes course. Sleeping under the stars. Adventures are endless at camp, and your child will have an opportunity to try something brand new. For the youngest campers, trying a new craft activity or learning a new camp song can be so much fun!

12 active kids

ter all, stepping into a new social environment can be challenging. But the ability to comfortably communicate with new people is a life skill that all kids need, and a camp is a great place to practice! Camps also provide kids an opportunity to form friendships with a whole new group of peers they might never have met otherwise. Camps give kids a much-needed technology break. No matter how old your child is, they could probably benefit from a screen hiatus, especially during the summer months. Spending time outdoors, learning a new skill, having fun, and forming new friendships is good for the body and soul!

Camps are a safe place to practice social skills.

Sending kids to camp is beneficial for you, too.

It might be awkward or uncomfortable for your child during those first few hours of camp when they don’t know a single soul. Af-

Driving away from your child(ren) on the first day might be a little gut-wrenching. But entrusting your kids to someone else for a

while can be truly beneficial. Maybe it will free up time for some overdue self-care, or give you and your partner time to reconnect. Maybe it will provide an opportunity to hit the reset button with your tween or teen. After all, absence makes the heart grow fonder! Parenting is tough work, so don’t feel guilty if you enjoy this time to yourself. Chances are, your kids are having a blast without you! Your child’s experience as a camper could help land a summer job in the future. Camps are staffed by amazing counselors who provide kids with all kinds of good, clean fun. Most of these counselors were campers once, too. Now they get to help a new set of youngsters make unforgettable summer memories, all while sharpening their own teamwork and leadership skills. Your child might have that same opportunity one day. What great way to spend a summer! Camp is just plain fun. So many adults have fond memories from their days spent at camp, and kids who have been to camp often say it’s a favorite part of their summer. Odds are, your kids are going to love it! And for that reason alone, it’s worth sending them to camp.

ummer is a great time for kids to take a break from routine and have some fun. However, too much time off can leave children bored and frustrated. Today, most parents have to work and cannot spend as much time as they would like doing activities with their children. March/April 2022

This is why sending your kids to camp can be a life saver. Days spent canoeing, fishing, swimming, and hiking are much better than those spent playing video games and watching television. Being at camp also gives kids a chance to be a little more independent and self-sufficient. can write home (the old-fashioned way with paper and pencil) to keep their parents up to date about what they’re doing. Some camps even have cameras so parents can follow their children’s adventures. Of course, for some kids, being away from home can be somewhat intimating and 11:35 AM Page 1 scary. This might be the first time they are away from their family, and homesickness can set in fast. If the camp allows, send them with their favorite stuffed animal, or their pillow, and send pictures so they can see familiar faces. Children are not the only ones who have to prepare themselves for being away for many active kids 17

nights in a row. Some parents also have a hard time letting go. As cited by the American Psychological Association, “children may observe and mimic parents’ discussion of worries. And when parents frequently provide verbal warnings, for example ‘be careful,’ children may anticipate danger and fear certain situations.” Helping your child look forward to and enjoy camp will help them not just that summer, but for years to come. They will learn new skills, make new friends, and become more self-reliant. In the article ‘Why Summer Camp is Important for Your Kids’ on urbanpro.com, it states that “summer camp is one place to enrich kid’s psychological aspects such as improve self- confidence, self-determination, thinking process, problem-solving skills and decisions making process (with an absence of their parents) and so on. It builds up the curiosity of self-definition in order to bring out the potential, creativeness, and capabilities of a kid. It also boosts leadership qualities.” For children whose lives are constantly man-

aged during the year, from their schedules and clothes to the foods they eat, being on their own can be freeing. Psychologist Michael Thompson, in his book Summer Camp: Great for Kids, Even Better for Parents, writes about the benefits for kids. “The number one issue for children is ownership. The thing I heard the most in interviewing hundreds of children is you can really be yourself at camp. When you are in your parent’s presence, there is always shared ownership of your life.” Many parents often wonder how old a child should be to go away to camp. There is no one answer to this question since every child is different. However, there are a few guidelines you can use to determine if sleep away camp is the right decision. In her Summer Camp Guide for Parents, author Pam Myers, BS. Ed, has some useful guidelines: • If they’re interested, it’s a good chance they’re ready. • Has your child spent the night with a friend or relative before? Children who are able to be away from parents before are more likely to be good candidates for an overnight camp experience. • How responsible is your child? Can they keep track of their own things and wash their clothes if they’re going to be gone for several weeks? Are they responsible enough to use camp money to purchase things they need rather than candy or other junk food? • Is your child comfortable seeking help from other adults or authority figures if you’re not around? • Picky eaters may also have difficulty at overnight summer camps. The staff may prepare special meals for a child with allergies or religious beliefs that limit what they can eat. • Consider sending your child for a shorter session for their first time at overnight camp. With the right preparations for the child and parents, summer camp can be the perfect answer to the dilemma of what to do with the kids all summer. Parents can enjoy some freedom from the everyday pressures of child rearing, and children can have experiences that they wouldn’t find at home. It’s a win-win situation.

Building RESILIENCY in Children By Reena B. Patel

s you know, this pandemic has not only impacted the well-being of adults, but has impacted the imaginal wellness of children. It’s difficult to bounce back from the ups and downs of the unknown of this pandemic for us grown ups but many children are understandably feeling anxious and hopeless and have a hard time managing or understanding those emotions.

healthy risks because they don’t fear falling short of expectations. For example, taking a risk and cold calling a virtual volunteer opportunity. These children are also curious, brave, and trusting of their instincts. Therefore, will respond better to new ways of learning. This includes remote learning and unexpressed changes. times, we tell our children 5 minutes and I will be right there to play with you and the 5 minutes becomes 30 min to an hour. Realistic Expectations. • Don’t over stretch your personal expectations of your child. Understand where they are at and be realistic when it comes to academic, emotional and self-help growth. • When the goals are attainable, your child will more likely comply because of the success of the outcomes. Remember to build feelings of competence and a sense of mastery Allow for mistakes • In fact, the child you call a “perfectionist” is one who research shows will grow up anxious. • Fear of failure children tend to be highly anxious children. . • This causes risk avoidance. Embracing mistakes (your own included) helps promote a growth mindset and gives kids the message that mistakes help them learn. • When children watch you tackle a mistake and get up and try again, this shows your child how to problem solve. Learning to problem solve • Modeling how you handle downfalls and work through dilemmas allows your child to know mistakes are ok and see how you build up to the poutine you want. • We all need help sometimes, and it’s important for kids to know they have help. • Brainstorm possible solutions with your child. • Encourage your child to come up with a March/April 2022

list of ideas and weigh the pros and cons of each one. Coping with stress and worries • If I could give anything to a child, it would be coping skills. • Life is and will be full of downs. We have to be realistic and teach our children that there are ways to cope with stressful situations. Resilience helps kids navigate these stressful situations. • A child who is resilient has the confidence to confront their worries. • As parents we need to show them ways they can cope. • Even as young as 3, children should begin to learn techniques to navigate through everyday stressors. • For example, in my book ‘Winnie & Her Worries,’ I show how a Worry Box can help or the use of positive affirmations. Don't jump in a try and rescue • I t's natural for parents to rush to the rescue and give an answer or problem to solve a challenge. • However, when will our children learn to navigate real life challenges if we are always there to fix their problems? A • A better strategy is to actively listen and ask questions. Help your child think through the issue and come up with solutions to try.

Tips for Teaching Self-Confidence: • Discover your child’s “who.” Identify a few legitimate strengths that you want your child to recognize about himself. Acknowledge them so your child knows exactly what he did to deserve recognition. Carve time for your child to develop these strengths: They can become a refuge when things fall apart. • Stress their strengths, not their weaknesses. You can help your child recognize what they do well by asking the following questions: “What subject/activity did you like most?” “What did you look forward to doing?” “What was your proudest (easiest, hardest) moment?” “What did you learn about yourself?” “What did you improve?” “What activity do you hope to do again?” • Watch your footwork. Kids are more likely to thrive when they are in control. Start slowly stepping back so your child pulls you in the direction he wants to go. Tips for Teaching Self-Control: • Help them recognize stress warnings. Point out your child’s stress signs until she can recognize them. For example, say: “Your hands are in a fist.” “You’re grinding your teeth.” “Your feet are bouncing.” • Teach your kids 1-2 breathing. This type of breathing consists of taking a slow, deep

breath and then exhaling twice as long as the inhale. This gets oxygen to the brain and helps kids stay in control. • Teach them to use positive phrases. Positive words (like “I’ve got this!” “Breathe!” “Stay calm. Carry on.”) can override the fear signal in our brains and reduce stress. Offer a range and encourage your child to choose one phrase until it’s automatic. Tips for Teaching Perseverance: • Erase: “Mistakes are bad.” When your child makes a mistake on a test, say: “A success secret is figuring out how to learn from mistakes so you don’t repeat the same error. Let’s look at your test and find how to correct it.” • Redefine success as a “GAIN.” For example, you might say: “Monday, you got two words correct; today you got five! That’s a GAIN!” Or: “Last week you hit one run; today you got two. That’s a GAIN!” • Cultivate a growth mindset. Praising your child’s effort, not the end product, helps kids recognize that success isn’t locked into DNA but increases with hard work and practice. Dr. Borba provides more tips in his book: Thrivers:The Surprising Reasons Why Some Kids Struggle and Others Shine.

Activity Schedules for Children with Autism

era

T

his article is about using activity schedules for children with autism in order to teach them how to follow a schedule, become more independent, and follow routines things like dressing, independent play time, or an evening routine. These activity schedules can even be used for older kids to learn how to do things like washing clothes. I explain how we have used these activity schedules for my son, Lucas, every single day for over two decades. What is an activity schedule? An activity schedule is a series of pictures or written words that show step by step how to do an activity, such as completing a bedtime routine, working on independent leisure time tasks, or making, eating and cleaning up 22 education central

breakfast. Activity schedules can be created in a variety of ways such as picture books or reminders in an app. I’ve been asked a number of times how to get our kids to do independent work, to do chores, to do their routines without adult prompting or while fading prompts. I remember way back when I was a new behavior analyst in 2003, I went into a classroom for the first time and I was getting to know the teacher and the students. I looked over and saw this child who was 9 or 10 years of age. He had his fingers in his mouth and it almost looked like he was choking himself. So, I said, “what is that student doing?” The teacher said, “he’s doing independent work.” That was not what was happening. The child was not engaging in anything appropriate. I then worked with the teacher and the child to use an activity schedule to build his independent work skills. There is a lot of need for kids to keep themselves busy and to participate in activities of suburban family | subfam.com

daily living. I want to show parents and professionals how to help their kids be more independent with autism independent work tasks. In my books and online courses and blog, I talk a lot about avoiding the word “work” so I would exchange that word and call this independent activity time, chores, and other terms like that. How to Use Activity Schedules for Children with Autism There is a great book from 1999 called Activity Schedules for Children with Autism: Teaching Independent Behavior. As a behavior analyst I was able to take this book and put it into action almost immediately. And I still use activity schedules for my son, Lucas, to this day. Lucas’s activity schedules are small photo albums with pictures of each step of a routine with text describing each action. For instance, with his morning routine book he goes downstairs, gets his medication out, then takes the medication with applesauce. He has pictures and prompts for going downstairs, getting the medication out of the container, and then taking it with applesauce. As a side note, I have a video blog on taking medications, and it would be ideal for Lucas to take his medications with water. But he March/April 2022

learned with applesauce and we’re okay with him continuing to take it this way. His morning routine continues with him getting turkey bacon out, putting 5 pieces on a plate, then in the microwave for two minutes. Then he eats, cleans up, and puts his dishes in the dishwasher, cleans the countertop and sweeps the floor. Again, there are pictures and prompts for each step. Types of Activity Schedules When using activity schedules for independent play or leisure time activities, it’s important to start out with just a few activities that the child enjoys, completes quickly and independently. This time can be expanded to 30 to 60 minute sessions where the child could choose between puzzles, do the puzzle, and then clean up before moving onto the next page for a matching game or a vocational task. If a child can read and they have an iPhone, you can use the reminders app to put in textual prompts and alarms. You could actually set timers to prompt the child to move onto the next skill or activity. In this kind of situation, you might have to teach the child how to set a timer, too. This is all covered in Activity Schedules for Children with Autism, available on Amazon.

What are the signs of autism? One of the most important things you can do as a parent or caregiver is to learn the early signs of autism and become familiar with the typical developmental milestones that your child should be reaching.

By 12 months

The autism diagnosis age and intensity of autism’s early signs vary widely. Some infants show hints in their first months. In others, behaviors become obvious as late as age 2 or 3.

Very few or no words

Not all children with autism show all the signs. Many children who don’t have autism show a few. That’s why professional evaluation is crucial.

Loss of previously acquired speech, babbling or social skills Avoidance of eye contact Persistent preference for solitude Difficulty understanding other people’s feelings Delayed language development Persistent repetition of words or phrases (echolalia) Resistance to minor changes in routine or surroundings Restricted interests Repetitive behaviors (flapping, rocking, spinning, etc.) Unusual and intense reactions to sounds, smells, tastes, textures, lights and/or colors If you have concerns, get your child screened and contact your healthcare provider

The following may indicate your child is at risk for an autism spectrum disorder. If your child exhibits any of the following, ask your pediatrician or family doctor for an evaluation right away: By 6 months

Few or no big smiles or other warm, joyful and engaging expressions Limited or no eye contact By 9 months

Little or no back-and-forth sharing of sounds, smiles or other facial expressions

Little or no babbling Little or no back-and-forth gestures such as pointing, showing, reaching or waving Little or no response to name By 16 months

By 24 months

Very few or no meaningful, two-word phrases (not including imitating or repeating) At any age

We all use reminders and to-do lists. But for kids with autism or signs of autism, having little activity books can really increase independence and help with reducing prompt dependency. I remember when my younger son, Spencer, was in high school, he and his friend were messing around with something and they got their shirts stained. He came running up and he said,“where’s Lucas’s how to do the wash book?” As you can see, activity books can be helpful for kids of any age and those with and without autism or delays. Activity schedules can even be great for anyone who needs more step-by-step guidance to learn or follow a routine. This step-by-step guidance helps us reduce the adult prompts and makes kids a lot more independent. I hope these tips on how to increase independent skills, chores, and routines inspires you. I know it’s helped my son a ton, and I hope it’ll help your child and clients too. For more information about joining our online course and community where we cover how to help kids be independent with selfcare activities like handwashing, dressing, and showering, you can attend a free workshop at marybarbera.com/workshops. And you can learn all about how to put a whole program in place for your child or clients anywhere you live around the world. March/April 2022

unning is one of the most popular sports in the world. It is practiced by people of all ages and backgrounds. So, what’s all the fuss about? Well, that’s what this article will cover. One of the many reasons why running is such a popular sport is that it requires no equipment and can be done anywhere. All you need to build a running habit is a little bit of motivation. People run for many reasons. Be it for the weight loss benefits or because it has been known to improve mental health. There isn’t one of us that couldn’t benefit from developing a daily running habit.

What Types of Running Can You Do? There are two main types of running: short sprints and long distance running.

If you find yourself getting bored with running, races can be a great way to reinvigorate your running life.

While practicing short sprints can do amazing things for your cardiovascular health and can help with weight loss, we’ll be focusing on long distance running here. As it has so many more benefits.

Types of Races There are two main types of beginner runners that we’ve met over the years: People who have decided to give running a go - because of the health benefits or many other reasons People who have signed up for a race, and now realize they actually have to learn how to run…

First, let’s discuss the types of long distance running you can do, and why signing up for races is one of the best things you can do to kickstart your running habit. Many people run for fun and aren’t interested in racing. This is often the case due to the fact that people think running races involve competing against other people. When in fact, races are best when you compete against yourself and can be a great way to motivate yourself to improve.

What most people find surprising is that signing up for a race as a beginner runner can actually make or break your running habit. And in fact, we recommend all beginners sign themselves up for a race before they go for their first run. Many people begin their running journey after signing up for a charity race. While rais-

ing money for charity is its own benefit, there is actually another huge benefit to race day deadlines. One we don’t often realize exists. Set a race day deadline as a goal. You will most likely complete a task if you have both external pressure and time-based pressure applied to your goals. This means if you know you will have to run a marathon in 6 months and people are sponsoring you to do it, you are much more likely to start running than if you’re trying to run with no deadline in mind. If you really want to develop a running habit, sign yourself up for a race. Benefits of Running 5k Now that we’ve talked about the best ways to start your running journey (the HOW), let’s talk about the benefits of starting one (the WHY). Why Running? Why all exercise will offer you an amazing array of health benefits, running is particularly special for a few reasons. Firstly, running is cheap. With running, there is no need to commit you to an expensive gym contract and you don’t have to pay instructors to teach you how to run. All you need to get started in the sport is a pair of well-fitting shoes and a water bottle. Secondly, running will take up very little time in your day. After a month or two running 5KM will take you less than half an hour. Yes, that’s right, you’ll be able to reap all the benefits we’re about to list for half an hour’s exercise a few times a week. We can all create half an hour of space in our day. We even know some really busy people who run home from work in order to fit in their daily run. Thirdly, running is convenient. You don’t have to waste time driving to the gym to run. You don’t have to queue to use a machine if you want to run. You simply have to step out of your door and you’re ready to start. AND you get to use your own shower at the end of the run. Finally, one of the best things about running is that you can see benefits from it whether it’s your only form of exercise or you mix it into a more diverse routine. Those of you who already have an exercise routine can max out its benefits by adding three 30 minute runs a week. But you can see all these benefits even if all you do is run 5KM three times a week. ou already know the mental and physical benefits of running. But has it crossed your mind to involve running with your kids? There are a ton of benefits of running that your kids should be taking advantage of now while they’re young! Research shows running can change the life of your child. Here are a handful of the most compelling reasons to begin getting your kids involved in running as soon as possible. Instills the Importance of Physical Fitness It’s not easy to include physical fitness into everyday life as an adult. It’s not something we all had growing up, making it much more difficult to fit into our daily routines. Just the thought of waking up at 5A or 6A to run everyday can be daunting. Teaching your kids to run from a young age instills a love for physical fitness and health. This is something we should all be teaching our children! It’s also easier to maintain as they get older when they have health and fitness as a big part of their daily routine. Teaches Healthy Coping Mechanisms Going for a run allows me to clear my mind, reduce stress, and bring your anxiety levels down. In addition, I am a better parent to my two little girls because of more patience. All of these traits I would like for my kids, wouldn’t you? It’s really simple for kids to turn to destructive and harmful strategies of dealing with

suburban family | subfam.com

stress in today’s society. Drug abuse, alcoholism, violent video games, and other coping methods have become the norm in today’s world. Learning to run may not protect your youngster from the craziness of the world, but it does provide them with a healthier response when they’re anxious or upset. It’s well known that exercise produces feel-good feelings that may help reduce stress and anxiety. It’s critical for parents to teach their children how to get the serotonin boost from exercise rather than through other methods. Opens Their Eyes to Appreciate Nature You can’t do a trail run without noticing the stunning surroundings! Early exposure to running helps your children get used to being out and about, surrounded by nature and breathing clean air. Spending time in nature has been shown to enhance mental health, boost cognitive abilities, and lower stress levels. Starting your kid off early with exposure to nature prepares them for a better mental health, smarter thinking abilities, and a happier life as an adult! Bonding Time Do you want to know how to connect with your children on a deeper level while still finding things to bond over? Running may be the ideal method to do so. There are numerous alternatives. As a family, go for a jog around the block, go for a park run, or go on an excursion/trail run. The possibilities for enjoyment are endless! Combine it with a little competitiveness and you’ve got yourself a healthy, entertaining game that brings the family together.

What To Keep In Mind When Running 5K Here are a few tips for first time runners: Don’t try and run 5K on your first ever run Most of us won’t be able to run 5KM on our first ever run. In the same way that most of us wouldn’t be able to perform a note perfect cover of Piano Man the first time we step up to the ivories. When you first start running it’s important to take this at a slow and steady pace. As frustrating as it might be, this is the best and safest way to build a consistent habit. There are many free ‘couch to 5K programs and apps online. They’re designed by professionals to help you build up the stamina and breathing skills you need for safe and enjoyable runs. Starting slow will help you avoid injury, sore legs, and mental burn out. Always stretch before and after a run Most runners learn this the hard way, so save yourself some pain and follow this advice. The easiest way to get injured in running (really in any kind of sport) is not to warm up properly. This study from the Mayo Clinic showed that both warming up before exercise and cooling down afterward severely reduced muscle soreness, and lessened the runners’ injury risk. The good news is that these activities don’t have to take very long. Warming up can be done in 5-7 minutes, and cooling down safely can be done in 10 minutes with an organized approach. Get the right pair of shoes The ‘right pair of shoes’ varies from person to person. We all have different gaits and make contact with the floor in different ways. We would recommend visiting your local sports/running shop and letting them help you pick out the perfect shoes. So, what are you waiting for?! It’s time to get out there and start running!
