SPRING FORWARD WITH POSITIVE CHANGE By Sue LeBreton
T
he longer and warmer days of spring herald a new season and the opportunity for you to invite change and increased energy into your lie. Consider it a restart button and use those extra hours of daylight to pamper yourself and plan for self-renewal.

Like the plants that have been dormant throughout the winter, spring can be your time to bloom. A fresh start requires you to drop any blame or negativity about what you have not done or what you should have done. Instead, focus on where you want to go. Make a new list. As moms we are great list makers: grocery lists, to-do lists for home and work, appointment and activity lists for family members, but do you have “To Me” list? Mannon Pelletier, Certified Lifestyle and Meditation Coach suggests that you create a “To Me” list. This sends a positive message to both you and your family. “When you begin adding a little “me” time to your schedule it signals those around you that you are taking care of yourself, have the intention of becoming healthier, and you are able to be at your best when playing, working and caring for them.” Start with your strengths. Dana Lloyd, Leadership Coach, suggests that you stay in your

strength zone. “To easily identify strengths, pay attention to what you are doing when you lose track of time. Watch for when you have an emotional high as well. When you identify your strengths, find ways to bring them into your life as frequently as possible because passion is fueled by our strengths.” If you are struggling with this, ask a friend for help because sometimes others can see our strengths while we are too busy listening to our inner critic. Start small. We often fail when we adopt changes that are too drastic. In Michelle Cederberg’s book, Energy Now! Small Steps to an Energetic Life, she recommends starting where you are and consistently adding in small changes. If you are a couch potato, start moving for ten minutes. If you enjoy your wine you might be more willing to try Cedeberg’s suggestion to limit alcohol to two or less drinks on most days. That can be easier to swallow than a program that has you eliminating alcohol and exercising for an hour daily as a starting point. March/April 2016
Make your goals specific. Lloyd says, “ If you want to lose weight be specific about your goal by answering how much and by when.” For example, you might say you are going to lose 10 pounds by a predetermined date. Instead of a vague I will eat more fruits and vegetables, set a daily goal and track it, remembering to start with a small improvement from where you are and as you establish the new habit you can ratchet up the goal. Try yoga. An activity like yoga that focuses on breathing offers you a rare time where you focus totally on you. It is never too late to start. Yoga teacher, Jayne Wilbur took her first yoga class at age fifty, “I was awestruck at how good it made me feel and at how it brought me into the moment.” Experiment with styles and teachers until you find a practice that suits you. Remember your spirit. Doing something nice for others is good for your immune system and lifts your mood. Show yourself that same kindness. When was the last time you bought
March/April 2016
flowers just for you or had a deep belly laugh? If you are searching for greater meaning to your life consider a spiritual practice or begin by reading spiritual or uplifting books. Buddy up. Just as it is easier to get out of bed for that early morning walk when you know a friend is waiting for you, a buddy who keeps you accountable and shares your struggles can help you stay on track. If you need more structure consider getting expert help whether it is a dietician for better eating, a life or weight loss coach. All these professions thrive because it is beneficial to have extra support. Flow with the seasons. The warmer weather and longer days may entice you to spend more time outdoors, moving your body and absorbing Vitamin D. Soon summer will arrive and with it fresh fruits and vegetables, so it may be easier to make dietary changes. If you falter on your new path, do not give up. Start again, maybe with even smaller steps. But put yourself on your list and have fun.

Go Big AND Go Home
T
By Kevin Christofora
hese days, when it comes to children’s birthday parties, it is typically ‘go big, or go home’. For Coach Kevin Christofora, it is ‘go big AND go home’…to home base that is.
“Coach Kevin” Christofora, author of The Hometown All Stars book series loves parties! He is known for hosting the largest Little League birthday party ever. As president of the Mountain Valley Little League in Woodstock, New York, Christofora issued the season schedule with one out-of-the-ordinary extra activity on it. A mandatory attendance at the field for a special event! Kids were to wearfull uniform, no equipment necessary. Much to everyone’s surprise, when they arrived they found tables covered in cupcakes. Circled by hundreds of kids Coach explained, “Some kids have birthdays during the season, and others have them in the winter.Today, we can celebrate all the birthdays together, and have a huge party!” The kids played outside with one another for hours, adults had a chance to catch up, and a memorable, fun time was had by everyone – and all it took was a ton of cupcakes.
ULTIMATE BIRTHDAY PARTIES
While there are some great spots to host a birthday party advertised in this issue,YOU can create a memorable children’s party by following Coach Kevin’s top tips for throwing a grand slam birthday bash! Parties for 0-2 Years New parents have celebrations that are often more for the adults than the kids. Let mom relax and give dad an important job that will be fun for him to do. Throw a baby baseball party and let him decorate in his favorite team colors. Serve some black and white “White Sox” cookies or hang black and gold balloons and streamers for a ‘Cubs’ theme. Nothing is cuter than a photo of a newborn in a baseball glove or in dads (or mom’s!) favorite baseball cap. Make sure to get your little slugger a baseball cake. The white frosting really pops in all those photos you will inevitably take when they smear the icing all over their face! Be sure to save those pics for future first dates to see. Parties for 2 Years and Older Getting older, there is one goal: honor the birthday boy or girl. It’s THEIR party, make it what they love. Nothing else matters. If it is March/April 2016

ballerinas, flowers, trucks, or Frozen that is their passion, make sure their party reflects that. However, if it is baseball - you can add something new each year. Pre-schoolers will love doing activities from The Hometown All Star books which can be used as inspiration for some party fun including a “choose your ‘Magic Bat’” station and a t-ball obstacle course while older kids will love inflatable batting cages and game days at the park. Most importantly – get outside! Obstacle courses, treasure hunts, water balloon t-ball and other activities that encourage outdoor play and exercise are always memorable! After so many Chuck-E-Cheese and bounce house parties, the kids are sure to remember something different. Invitations You can save money with homemade invitations if they are fun. One inexpensive option that is to copy a page from a coloring book in the theme of the party and add the information about the event around it. Kids love coloring in their invitation to hang on the fridge where their parents will be sure to see it and remember to RSVP! You can download FREE baseball themed coloring pages at www.TheHometownAllStars.com! Decorations Repeat after me: “YOU DON’T HAVE TO OVER-DO IT”. A party can be special without going over-the-top on decorations. Coming together to have fun should be what the party is really about. Keep the tablecloth and accessories simple and plain. The kids will not notice what color their forks are, and in the end most adults won’t care (and if they do – don’t invite them next year). Save money by integrating the theme on the plates, cups, goody bags and cake, where the kids will notice it the most. Food I have hosted many parties over the years, both for my children and for my Little League teams, and the food that are always a hit are the stadium standbys: hot dogs, homemade pigs-in-a-blanket, wings, nachos, popcorn, and Crackerjacks. However, unless you know your group very well, steer clear of serving any kind of foods that involve peanuts, peanut butter, or peanut oil on your menu, because many children have allergies. For dessert ice cream served in mini baseball helmets (which double as take home gifts), and a good, old-fashioned themed cake always get a smile from kids – and adults for that matter. Keep it themed, keep it simple and keep it outdoors and you’re sure to hit a home run at your next children’s party! March/April 2016

The Psychology of Summer Camp Time at camp may be all it takes to spark a little self-determination in your kid. I know it sounds too good to be true. Your school-age slacker – the one who expects you to find his homework and pack his lunch – might start doing some things for himself. And your often-bored tween might come home with more pep in her step. Psychologists use self-determination theory (SDT) to explain why some experiences make us feel engaged and excited while others drain and deplete us. The premise is simple: when an activity meets our needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness, we are energized and empowered. Kids’ basic needs are no different from adults’. Kids want to do things for themselves. They crave a sense of accomplishment and suburban family | subfam.com
routinely seek feedback. (“Look what I made, Mom!”) And kids thrive on connections with loved ones and peers. Feelings of belongingness boost their self-worth. Summer camp offers loads of opportunities to meet all these needs. And that should make kids

The need for autonomy is satisfied when kids control their own lives. At camp, your son will have endless opportunities care for himself. Staff won’t select his clothes, organize the contents of locker, or remind him to put on deodorant. No one will delay dessert until he eats his veggies. Independence is what camp is all about. Don’t worry. The world won’t stop if your son wears the same shirt three days in a row. His peers will speak up if he gets super stinky. During the school year, many kids jump from one regularly scheduled activity to the next with no unstructured time in between. Camp puts kids in charge of their own activities. Maybe your daughter will take a hike. Maybe she’ll paint pottery. Maybe she’ll write you an email. It is up to her to decide how she’ll spend her free time. One thing is certain: she won’t sit around whining about having nothing to do. And if she does, you won’t be there to hear it.
Competence The need for competence is satisfied when kids learn new things and get positive feedback about their efforts. Your kid might choose a camp focused on art, science, sports, or music. Or he may opt for a good old-fashioned sleep-away experience, complete with row boats and weenie roasts. Some camp activities may be outside your kid’s comfort zone. Stretching is good. Your child may be unsure she can cross the slippery log over the creek. She may tremble with excitement about her role in the theater production. Peers and counselors will coax her along and give constructive advice. By the end of camp, she’ll be the star of her own adventure stories. If your kid is an experienced camper, encourage him to share what he knows with newbies. Being an ambassador or mentor affirms kids’ competence in a big way. Teaching a peer how to trim a sail or chip a golf ball out of the tall grass will take your son’s skills to a higher level. His confidence will soar in response.

Your biggest concerns about summer camp may center on the social scene. Your child may not know anyone on arrival. That’s okay. Camps create connections in many ways. Your kid will be instantly bonded with bunkmates because they share a home base. Family-style dining and friendly competitions encourage interaction, too. The pursuit of shared goals – like building a robot or putting a frog in the counselor’s sleeping bag – cements kids’ camaraderie. Extroverted kids may make lots of friends at camp. Less sociable souls may not. What matters most is that kids have opportunities to talk, play and live with a diverse group of peers. They won’t all become fast friends. Learning to navigate the choppy waters of friendship formation is a big part of the camp experience. Your kid’s social skillset will expand – even if she doesn’t find a new BFF. No matter what your kid takes to camp, he’ll come home with a suitcase full of memories and a renewed sense of self-determination.You’ll see it as soon as he wakes from his long post-camp nap. hether you’re a complete beginner or you’ve dabbled in some running races, triathlon can be a fun and challenging experience for any recreational triathlete. A series of short, frequent workouts done consistently each week will develop your fitness and improve your skills. Ease into the work. At first, simply swimming, biking and running is enough. Don’t worry about how far or how fast! Include a few “brick” workouts where you move from swimming to biking or biking to running. As you train, don’t forget to keep it fun!

BIKE
Schedule a bike tune up approximately 1-2 weeks prior to your event • Always wear your helmet & eye protection • Carry two spare inner tubs, two C02 cartridges & your ID on every ride • Pump up your tires at least once a week • Always ride on the right side of the road • Learn proper signals for turns & stopping • Teach yourself to shift through your gears smoothly on varied terrain
WALK
• Invest in a durable pair of shoes from your local running store • Remember to hydrate with 16 to 24 oz fluids per hour • Use sun protection to stay cool and limit heatrelated risks • Include a few fast walk segments or short hill repeats in your training walks • Track your miles using a GPS or an activity tracker
RUN
• Preview or know the course prior to the race • Implement a run/walk strategy if you are newer to running • Pace yourself by starting slowly & picking up your pace as you go • Utilize any aid stations to take a small cup of water • Follow the hard/easy rule of training: avoid two days of hard running in a row • Build your mileage slowly to limit risk of injury
SWIM
• Enlist the help of a local swim coach to prepare you • With a coach or friend, practice in open water a few times • Use goggles appropriate for the light conditions • Practice in a wetsuit if you plan to use one • Settle into a relaxed, frequent breathing pattern For more info visit www.multisportmastery.com

Ready, Set, GO!
You already know there are many great reasons to exercise—from improving energy, mood, sleep, and health to reducing anxiety, stress, and depression. And detailed exercise instructions and workout plans are just a click away. But if knowing how and why to exercise was enough, we’d all be in shape. Making exercise a habit takes more: namely, the right mindset and a smart approach.
Regular aerobic exercise for kids helps to strengthen bones, aids in weight control and leads to improved cardiovascular health into adulthood. By far, the biggest problems for children and running seem to be the psychological aspects of training and racing that make child runners different than their often-overzealous parents. Before your child laces up his or her shoes for the first time, address any questions or concerns with a pediatrician. Start them out young. Even babies can now accompany their parents on a run in a baby jogger. When the kids outgrow the stroller and are ready to run on their own, running should be more free-form and fun, with
goals that are easily attainable. Emphasize improved performance, not winning. Kids, much like adults, need a motivator to start running. Select a goal race and plan a training program that fits into the timeline. Many beginning programs start with alternating between running a few minutes and walking a few minutes, working up to longer times, greater distances and ultimately faster paces. Participating regularly in family activities, like bike rides and hikes will also show your kids that being active can be fun, and in the long run will make them fitter, healthier and happier adults. A family that plays together, stays together! A family fun run is a great chance to come together as a family and teach your kids the importance of health and fitness. Walk, run, roll and swim to support a lot of great causes. You’ll find a race event, or two or three or more from Suburban Family Magazine’s ANNUAL RACE GUIDE, so, get Ready, Set and Go register NOW.

f you’re looking for a May getaway there is no better destination than the Tulip Time Festival in Holland, Michigan, celebrating its 87th year in 2016. The festival began in 1929 to celebrate Dutch heritage in the community.
DUTCH DANCERS | PARADES | CITY TOURS | SPECIAL EVENTS | MILLIONS OF TULIPS
Today the fun continues with three parades, Dutch dancers, national and regional entertainment, Dutch market, fireworks, and the stars of the show: our millions of tulips. Highlights include hundreds of costumed locals scrubbing the streets clean during the Volksparade, the 7,000 school children of Holland marching in the Kinderparade, and on Saturday marching bands in the Muziekparade. Dutch dancers dressed in authentic costumes and wooden shoes, high-kick their way through traditional dances throughout the week of the festival. Or enjoy a Tulip City Trolley Tour. If it’s genuine Dutch crafts and souvenirs you seek, you can find them at the Dutch market along with traditional Dutch food, art and musical performances. family wellness
By Carl Greer, PhD, PsyD
D
o you always secondguess yourself and mentally run through every possible scenario and all the potential risks? Do you find that after resolving one worry, you immediately identify something else to worry about? Did these questions make you worry about whether you worry too much?
If so, go ahead and laugh at yourself. Humor is one way to get past the discomfort of looking honestly at oneself, and the first step in lowering your worry quotient. Your worry quotient is the amount of time you spend worrying in any given day. People who spend the majority of their day worrying have a high worry quotient. Others rarely worry and, therefore, have a low worry quotient. Worry plays an important role in our lives. It can alert us to potential danger, inspire us to think creatively about ways to avoid negative situations, and even make us more closely observe those relationships we need to attend to. Some of the kindest and most empathetic 42 family wellness
people have a high worry quotient. However, if worrying is preventing you from writing a more satisfying story for your life, causing emotional stress and affecting your health, you can lower your worry quotient. According to clinical psychologist Carl Greer, PhD, PsyD, author of “Change Your Story, Change Your Life,” the first step in writing a new story for your life is to be honest with yourself about your current story. “Identify three things you worried about in the past that didn’t justify the amount of worrying you devoted to them,” Greer said. “Perhaps these were situations that worked themselves out on their own, or someone else took on the burden of untangling a knotty problem for you. Try to identify why you felt the need to worry about them, and why, in retrospect, your worrying was unwarranted.” Do you see a pattern to the types of things you unnecessarily worry about? If not, write down three more situations or potential situations you worried about and try to identify why you worried about them and whether it was worthwhile to do so. What themes do you see in your worrying? Do you worry about the future, people keeping secrets from you, or lack of control? “Go back to your list and imagine a scenario where each of these situations worked out beautifully,” Greer said. “Perhaps that’s exsuburban family | subfam.com
actly what happened, or perhaps you never learned the outcome. Maybe the outcome was bad but not nearly as bad for you as you had feared. Regardless of the actual outcome, visualize that situation working out well for all involved.” Now, notice how you feel – relaxed, less stressed, hopeful, and optimistic. To lower your worry quotient in any scenario, Greer advises to examine the value of your worrying and envision better outcomes. “Use your high worry quotient to identify potential problems, and then visualize optimal outcomes,” he said. “The energy you spend worrying can be devoted to identifying simple actions you can take to reduce the possibility of negative outcomes. Often, small actions awaken you to your ability to effective manage your stress level and reduce worrying in every unnecessary situation.” Some things that we worry about can be out of our control or have an extremely low probability of ever happening. Other things can become less worrisome if we take action, even if that action is simply to learn more about the situation, so that we can open ourselves up to seeing a wider range of possibilities. “Action and creativity are powerful tools for reducing your worry quotient,” Greer said. “Use these tools today to change your story and change your life.” March/April 2016

What is an Uncontested Divorce? An uncontested divorce is a viable and inexpensive option for spouses of all economic and family status. Offering you and your spouse the chance to end your marriage quietly and with dignity. An uncontested divorce means that the spouses are able to agree on the major issues involved in a divorce, such as child custody; child support; spousal support; division of property; and division of debt. Spouses in agreement must still go to court to obtain the court’s approval. However, an uncontested divorce usually moves quicker through the courts, is less expensive, and minimizes the amount of private information made public. While no divorce is without disagreements, an experienced divorce attorney can assist you in getting the best results. March/April 2016
