Participate in a new family adventure Trying new activities outside your comfort zone is often a highlight of a vacation. You can find adventures close to home that offer the same thrilling excitement. Has your family ever gone mountain biking, kayaking, or ziplining? What about learning how to ride a horse, play disc golf or stand-up paddle board? Choose an activity no one in the family has done before and learn something new together.

escalate the fun with unique food cooked over a fire. Hot dogs and s’mores may be the family favorite, but other campfire fare can take it up a notch. Cook meat kebabs, bacon wrapped around bread dough, even grilled cheese sandwiches over the fire. Before darkness settles in, take the kids on a scavenger hunt for rocks, sticks or leaves of a certain shape or color. Then, gather around the fire and tell stories. Waking up to sunshine overhead and birds singing right outside your tent is a peaceful reminder you’re far from your usual routine.

Escape to Africa via a livestreamed safari Do your kids love seeing animals in their natural habitat? Is an African safari on your bucket list? It’s a dream of Lisa Leffel and her family of four, but for now they experience the thrill of an African safari from home by tuning in to the livestream of WildEarth’s daily safaris. Not just an ordinary virtual visit to Africa - a camera operator actually tags along with a naturalist on a safari through different African parks and livestreams the whole thing. Kids love tuning in because it’s so unpredictable – it broadcasts in real time whatever the team happens to stumble on that day. Leffel enjoys the unscripted commentary by the

Plan a themed dinner with global cuisine and ambiance to match Sampling local food can be a fun part of a vacation. Create that experience at home by trying your hand at a new recipe (or order takeout!) consisting of foods from a favorite vacation destination – or a place you hope to visit. Hawaiian luau or Mexican fiesta anyone? Pair fun beverages to match the meal and tailor the ambiance by playing music from the area, decorating for the destination and the part. door Industry Association found that hiking rose in participation more than any activity measured in April, May and June of 2020 compared to those months in 2019.That’s not surprising since families were eager to get out of the house while still being active and staying safe. Hiking can be a great way to explore new sights and make family memories – especially if you plan a day of it. Pack a picnic, watch for wildlife, and pose for pictures along the trail – everything you’d do if you were hiking hundreds of miles away on a family vacation.

Create an all-out destination day at home

If you want to take the themed dinner idea to another level, meet Stephanie Williams, mom of 3. Her family had to cancel a trip to Disney due to COVID lockdown, so she got creative. “We felt the kids needed a little pick-me-up, so we came up with three staycation days,” says Williams. The plan? Take her family on a trip to Disney, Las Vegas and a Jamaican cruise without ever leaving their house. With packed suitcases and (fake) airline tickets in hand, the family of five boarded the airplane (rows of seats in the living room) and took off for their ‘destination’ – airline snack and drink included! The Disney day included Mickey Mouse t-shirts for all, Mickey Mouse pancakes and a makeover at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique. The kids experienced a thrilling adventure as they watched virtual rides on TV while sitting in baskets rocked back and forth by mom and dad. Then the family all took part in a Minion drawing session following a “How-to” video.Williams’ favorite day was the cruise where they began with a safety check (everyone wearing their floaties), and then spent the day lounging on a hammock on the island (aka backyard), doing outdoor crafts, May/June 2021

grabbing snacks and drinks from a makeshift tiki bar, playing in the inflatable pool, coloring their own souvenir t-shirts and playing bean bag toss. They topped off the night with a fancy captain’s dinner and karaoke talent show. As for the Vegas day – well, what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. The entire family had a blast with the elaborate ‘vacation’ days.

Catch the sunrise or sunset Research a local spot that captures the beauty of the sunrise or sunset in a magical way. Grab your kids (and your camera!) to experience the gorgeous glow on a hill or reflecting off water, a couple miles away or a couple hours from home. Sure, your kids may have early bedtimes or like to sleep in in the mornings, but those habits often get thrown out the window during vacation anyway. What better way to escape your normal routine, get away from the real world and experience the golden hour in the great outdoors? If your family is getting stir-crazy and wanderlust is setting in, capture that vacation feeling by recreating travel experiences closer to home. It may not be a typical vacation, but the family bonding is real, providing fun family memories for years.

Golf Links & Tips Golf Tip: Body Pivot - One of the most important parts of our golf swing is the body pivot. Understanding the correct way to rotate the body key to hitting good shots. The pivot includes rotation of the body and the shifting of weight from the start of the swing to the finish. A correct pivot movement creates power and promotes solid impact with the golf ball. Backswing Pivot: Start yourself in an athletic golf posture and start to rotate the torso around the spine while maintaining your upper body tilt. Shift weight and build pressure onto the trail foot as you rotate away from the target. At the top of the backswing, your lead shoulder should point downward toward ground, and weight should be balanced on the inside of the trail foot. 12 out & about

Pro at St. Charles Park District. Take a tip from the master of family entertainment – DisneyTM, which continually stresses the need to view the world through the eyes of a child. By playing from the same tees and using clubs that will travel the same distance as your child’s stroke, you will get to spend quality time during the round and create a realistic goal for your child of hitting shots further than you. I highly recommend practicing on a putting green or short game practice area that provide a great opportunity to teach proper posture, grip and alignment. One of my favorite activities is to form teams among family members and create competitions. The ultimate benefit is improvement in putting and short game which account for nearly 70% of the shots taken in a normal round of golf. Remember the goal is to have fun, be creative, and let your child create games that are fun through their eyes while instructive in the FB LIKE fill 12.17:Layout 1 12/15/17 fundamentals through your eyes.

Uncoil the muscles that were rotated around the spine during the backswing and maintain the body tilt and posture. o your child’s birthday is just around the corner, but you don’t have time to plan and prepare the perfect party? Don’t despair. There are plenty of fun places to hold kids’ parties that’ll save you time in planning, preparation, and cleanup. Most importantly, your birthday child and guests will have a blast. Try some of these party places for kids of all different ages. When you call, ask what amenities are available and included. Many sites provide invitations, food and cake, balloons and decorations, a private party area, a gift for the birthday child, and other special birthday services. Also, ask questions to make sure it will be a safe environment for your guests during the pandemic. In particular, what are the mask and social distancing requirements for both employees and guests.

– Bowling parties are a fun form of recreation for kids of all ages. Preschoolers can score every time with bumper bowling, while teens can go cosmic for glow in the dark fun. Add to the amusement by offering small prizes for low and high scores and the most and fewest gutters. – Preschool and early elementary children thrill at invitations to these parties. They can play kiddie arcade-style games, win tickets for prizes, hop on coin-operated rides, and romp in soft play areas. – Head to a wave pool or water park where big kids can ride the waves, swish down water slides, take a plunge, and go on tubing adventures. What better way cool off and party on a hot summer day? Indoor water parks a fun alternative for the colder months. Check with your nearby farm, ranch, or apple orchard to find out what activities are offered. Many include hayrides, petting zoos, corn mazes, apple picking, and more. These are perfect for fall birthdays. – Recreation and fitness centers offer a wide variety of activities for birthdays, including gymnastics, swimming, basketball, and arts and crafts.

When sending out invitations, be sure to mention that everyone will be required to wear masks. You could even offer to provide a fun dinosaur or butterfly disposable mask for each child.

– Check with your local dance studio for birthday party packages. Some offer professional dance instruction and allow food and party treats to be brought in, so the whole shebang is done right there.

- Roller skating rinks are again gaining popularity, and most offer a choice of inline or roller skate rentals for today’s kids. Also, consider ice-skating and ice or a roller hockey party as a fun alternative.

– Big kids will be in awe to see one of their favorite performers in concert. For young children, look for a kiddie musical adventure offered by an area musician or music center.

– Young kids love to create. So schedule a craft party at a fabric shop, craft store, or scrap-recycling center where kids’ activities are offered. – Kids will thrill at testing their skills and cunningness in a game of laser tag. These centers often offer on-site party areas and birthday packages. – For a simple and inexpensive toddler or preschool party, McDonald’s, Burger King, and other fast-food joints are an excellent choice. Children can crawl through a playscape and dive into a pool of balls while enjoying their favorites: hamburgers and French fries. Call ahead to make your reservation. - Family fun centers offer a variety of entertainment, including batting cages, miniature golf, video games, bumper boats, and go-carts. – Kids of all ages will be thoroughly engrossed and entertained at one of the many hands-on science museums. The party-goers can try out gadgets, watch or participate in experiments, play instruments, construct, and much more. – Daredevils won’t want to miss one of these exciting quests. Look for a rock climbing gym in your area where party guests can do rock climbing with a professional instructor. – Give your teen some fun in the sun with a beach bash. Contact the park for information on volleyball equipment and to make a reservation for a covered picnic area. Look for a spot with horseshoes and plenty of sand, and don’t forget the beach balls, pizza, and cooler of pop. May/June 2021

– Theme parks make for big-time fun for older kids who are content to take only one or two guests. When planning the guest list, don’t forget to budget meals, snacks, and drinks, which add up quickly in theme parks.

When planning your child’s party, keep in mind what’s important is not how perfectly the party goes. Instead, it’s that your birthday child and guests have fun. To ensure success, follow these tips:

– Parties away from home don’t have to be costly. Reserve a shelter at a nearby park with a large, fenced-in, frontier-style playscape. Little ones can run, climb, and play to their heart’s content. Bring along your party supplies and set up under a pavilion. To keep things simple, call ahead for pizza delivery.

• Keep the guest list manageable to avoid confusion, and conflict. The number of guests should correspond with the child’s age or slightly over.

– An afternoon canoe excursion for teens is the ultimate in outdoor fun. Contact canoe rental facilities for details. Bring along pop and a picnic lunch, and make sure the food stays in the chaperone’s canoe where it’ll be safe from tips. Don’t forget balloons for water balloon fights during rest stops.

• Send out written invitations. Verbal invitations are easily forgotten. Also, it can leave parents of the invited child wondering whether the invitation was approved by the birthday child’s parents.

–Zoos are an excellent source for birthday entertainment. Many offer party packages that include meals, cake, invitations, live animal presentations, and more.

Party Tips

suburban family | subfam.com

• Request an RSVP with a specific deadline, so there is time to invite others should the guest list fall short. Be sure to include your phone number and email address. • Offer your child choices for the party, ask for input, and allow them to assist in planning.

• Include all details on the invitation, including a start and end time, address and directions, phone number, and what guests need to bring, such as a bathing suit and towel. • Play it safe, and set a rain date for outdoor parties. • Keep the length of the party within reason. Unless it’s a sleepover or special event, preschool parties should be limited to one hour, and two to three hours for older children.

What Type of

CAMP Should Your

CHILD Attend? By Sandi Schwartz

W

hen we were kids, life was simpler. Many of us just hung around the house during the summer and played with neighborhood friends, or maybe attended a local day camp sponsored by our school or city. Well, nowadays there are camps for everything you can imagine! It can be quite confusing, and even stressful, trying to find the right camp for our kids. It is even more challenging this summer with Covid, as we want to make sure our kids are safe at camp. We are facing big decisions as we try to balance our child’s health safety with them having a fun time. Sometimes we even have to choose different camps for each of our children based on their interests or needs. Looking for an in-person, small group, art camp experience in Bartlett? Great for ages 6 & up, these camps explore a range of fun fine art and craft activities! Register for one of our weekly 3-Day themed camps in the morning or afternoons. To reserve your spot, go to CreativityFromTheHeart.com or inquire at AnnGriffinArts@gmail.com. Registration begins May 1st, spots are limited! 18 active kids

Finding the best camp is essential for our children’s comfort and growth. Camps can offer them experiences and tools to go out in the world and discover who they are and what they want to become. A child can only truly grow if given the freedom and chance to gain confidence by exploring new ideas and activities, and eventually finding their passion.

Please only choose one answer.

If you are struggling to find the right camp for your child this summer, take this fun and easy quiz. You will be able to discover which type of camp is the best fit for your child.

B. Sports Camps Sports camps usually consist of only one sport that a child plays throughout the day. The main goal is for participants to improve their skills by focusing extensively on a sport they love. Depending on where you live, you can find all types of sports camps like tennis, golf, soccer, baseball, lacrosse, or gymnastics. It is also a way for your child to try a new sport or something only offered during the summer, such as surfing and sailing. C. Science/Tech Camps

ADDISON ALL STAR Art | Dance |

Specialty art and musical theater camps focus specifically on the arts. Some may offer a variety of art forms to choose from, such as pottery, woodworking, painting, and photography. Others focus solely on one type of art, such as sewing camp or band camp. Musical theater camps are quite popular and typically showcase a production after a few weeks of rehearsals. Art camps come in all lengths and locations. You can sign your child up for a oneweek-long art camp at your local recreational center or find multi-week overnight art camps where they can truly hone their craft.

If your child loves to code, build, and tinker, then a tech camp may be the right fit. These types of camps make learning about science and technology fun and exciting for kids. They also provide an opportunity for kids to dive deeper into a subject they love, such as working on a science experiment, designing a website, or programming a robot. You can find science and tech camps through local schools, colleges, and museums. Traditional camps are what you think of when you envision summer camp—canoeing, hiking, archery, relay races, swim lessons, and crafts. They can be considered “jack-of-all-trades” camps because they offer all types of activities for children to try. If your child enjoys exploring and experiencing new things and has not yet found one specific activity that they are passionate about, then a traditional camp is a wonderful choice. They are very common and can be found all over. Some are day camps, while others are overnight experiences where your kids can also learn more independence skills. Overnight camps also offer a more rustic, outdoorsy experience with campouts, cabins, campfires, and activities on the lake. May/June 2021

family wellness

Allergy Parents Consider Totally Normal By Pam Moore

B

efore we found out our younger child had severe, life-threatening food allergies, we kept the kids’ emergency information on a crumpled piece of paper, shoved in a drawer between the vegetable peeler and the wine opener. But when our daughter was 8 months old, we went to the allergist, hoping to figure out why she was chronically congested and why nothing we tried could touch her eczema. Going into the appointment, I was hopeful. Leaving the appointment, I was deflated. We learned our baby was allergic to eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, dairy, and wheat. We had strict instructions to keep the EpiPen with her at all times, to avoid letting someone who had so much as eaten a peanut kiss her, and to schedule a follow-up appointment. In the weeks following the diagnosis, I cried overwhelmed tears whenever I thought about it. Could I protect my baby from the danger of a rogue cashew? Would I be able to trust anyone else to keep her safe? Would she miss the chance to be a normal kid? Fear consumed me. It has been a year since we got the diagnosis and I still worry. I plan ahead for everything 28 family wellness

when food is involved. But just as friends and family assured me it would, living with allergies has become our new normal. If any of the below feel normal to you, welcome to the world of parenting an allergic kid, where a random piece of food at the playground is just as scary as a rattlesnake sighting.

1

You don’t think twice about telling anyone, whether it’s a babysitter, a friend, or an overly friendly grandma-type in line at the bank, “Don’t feed my kid.” You’d hang a “Do Not Feed Me” sign around her neck, like they have at the zoo if it were socially acceptable.

2

When the gluten-free, casein-free, dairyfree, soy-free chicken nuggets are on sale you buy 10 packages.

3 4

Your kids’ baby doll is prone to bouts of “anaphylactic.”

You read food labels compulsively. You know all the 18-syllable words that dairy, wheat, nuts, and eggs hide in.

5

You think nothing of digging through the trash to retrieve food packaging at a friend’s house in order to see the ingredient list.

6

Your toddler brags to babysitters that she knows how to work the EpiPen. And suburban family | subfam.com

though you’ve never verified whether or not this is actually true, she’s seen you show enough sitters how to do it that you’re pretty sure it is.

7

When you arrive at any park/library/indoor play area/friend’s living room, you scan the floor for potential allergens. You do it again whenever a new child arrives. You do it again even if no one new has arrived, just to be on the safe side. You know people probably assume you’re a helicopter parent. You are too busy looking for rogue peanuts to care, though.

8

When you are invited to a social gathering, you consider a number of factors including: the time of the event, your relationship with the host, how long you plan to stay, whether or not young children will be eating (and dropping) allergens, and the host’s personal experience with allergies. You use this matrix to determine whether 1) you will attend, 2) you will interrogate the host about the menu in advance, 3) you will casually inquire about the menu when you arrive, or 4) just bring your own safe meal—although you know you will bring your own food in the end, regardless.

9

Your three-year-old bakes “birthday cakes” (piles of blocks heaped atop the lid of a shoebox) that she boasts are “dairyfree, gluten-free and vegan.” May/June 2021

10

You are used to putting the fear of God in everyone who watches your kid, and you prefer it that way. Well, not everyone. You wish your mom would be more scared.

11

You have the local gluten-free, dairy-free bakery’s number stored in your contacts, and you have memorized their hours. You keep a few of their cupcakes in the freezer so you can bring your kid a safe treat to any birthday party or social gathering at a moment’s notice, and you don’t gorge on them until after the kids go to bed. Well, sometimes you do, but you always replace them ASAP.

12

Your baby’s first taste of ice cream is not actually ice cream, but vegan, gluten-free lemon basil gelato, and it’s not because you’re crunchy hippies (even though that is exactly what you are, by most people’s standards)

13

Your sister blows up your phone with photos not of your nephew, but of ingredient lists on the foods she’s considering buying when you visit, to make sure they’re safe. You are beside yourself with gratitude. You feel extra bad for being such a shit to her when you were kids.

14

The best birthday party you ever went to was the one where the host reached out to you in advance to find out exactly what your baby was allergic to and went out of her way to make special, allergen-free pancakes for her.

15

When you fly, your diaper bag is stuffed with multiple days’ worth of safe snacks because although air travel with a toddler is unpredictable, you can depend on one thing: None of the free, processed, delicious snacks they give out on the plane are safe for your child.

16

You keep your kids’ emergency information up-to-date in a special plastic folder that is always stored in the same place. You’ve stuck a neon yellow piece of duct tape across the front, where you’ve listed all the allergies and your address because 911 doesn’t know where you’re calling from when you use a cell phone. In said folder, five pieces of paper are devoted to the child with allergies. The child without allergies gets one measly page.

17

You can’t wait for your allergic child to start talking—not because you want to hear all the sweet, funny things she will say (although you do), but because you will sleep better when she can say, “I have food allergies.” But, who are you kidding? You’re a mom. Better sleep is a fantasy. May/June 2021

Expert Offers Tips on Managing Migraine and News On Latest Treatment June is National Migraine and Headache Awareness Month

N

early 40 million Americans have migraine and it is one of the ten most disabling medical illnesses, according to the World Health Organization. However, because it is an “invisible” disease, it’s often overlooked and misunderstood. For National Migraine and Headache Awareness Month, and to help the millions who have migraine, Merle L. Diamond, MD, headache neurologist and president, managing director, Diamond Headache Clinic in Chicago, has advice to share.

What is migraine?

Migraine is more than just a headache; it is a disabling neurological disease with different symptoms and different treatment approaches compared to other headache disorders. People with migraine can experience severe head pain, sometimes throbbing, pounding or pulsating, several times a month, lasting from four hours to several days. Additional symptoms of migraine may also include sensitivity to light and sound and/or feeling nauseous. Worse still, many of my patients tell me they frequently can’t continue with their day because of their migraine, and in the past before current pandemic times, they had often missed important events like weddings, parties and school graduations. They also lose out on employment opportunities. It’s a very disabling disease.

What causes migraine?

The exact cause isn’t really clear, but genetics and environment do play a role. In fact, migraine often runs in families. There are certain “triggers” that can cause migraine, which affect people differently. Some triggers include stress, certain foods, dehydration, too much or too little sleep, changes in weather, seasonal allergies, hormonal changes in women, and head injury.

Merle L. Diamond, MD, headache neurologist and president, managing director, Diamond Headache Clinic in Chicago

What can you tell us about treatment?

Because migraine affects people differently, I work with each individual to come up with a plan. One approach I use with my patients for when a migraine strikes is to prescribe an acute treatment for migraine in adults called Nurtec® ODT (rimegepant). Nurtec ODT is not indicated for the preventive treatment of migraine. It is important not to take Nurtec ODT if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients. For most people, Nurtec ODT can start to work within an hour and last up to 48 hours. It melts on or under the tongue, eliminating the need for water, making it a convenient option. In clinical trials a small number of patients, about 2 percent, experienced nausea.

What do you recommend for people who suspect migraine?

I recommend that if people are experiencing multiple days of painful headaches, along with the other symptoms mentioned above, to see their doctors. If a physician’s response doesn’t properly address concerns, then people should seek a second opinion. There are many ways to manage migraine pain. And an expert in migraine and headache medicine is a good place to start.

Please visit Nurtec.com for full Prescribing Information and Patient Information.

HOW TO COMBAT SOCIAL ISOLATION

E

ven before COVID-19 limited social contact with friends, family and colleagues, many adults experienced loneliness and depression due to limited contact with others. Now, a year after the pandemic forced many people into even greater levels of isolation, the issue of social isolation is especially prevalent in Americans over the age of 50. Despite the physical implications of a global pandemic, research shows the mental health stakes are high, too. A nationwide survey, commissioned by Barclays, found that half of Americans over the age of 50 said the isolation from their friends and family has been more challenging than concerns over health risks they may face. Social isolation has provided plenty of time for Americans to reflect on their priorities. The majority of Americans surveyed (90%) have re-evaluated their post age-50 goals and put spending more time with family at the top of their lists. In fact, the most common first thing 50-plus Americans will do once COVID-19 is over is to see and spend time with their families (41%). “While restrictions are beginning to ease, many older adults are still isolated from friends and family, and that takes a toll on their mental well-being” said Lisa Marsh Ryerson, president of the AARP Foundation. “We must do all we can to help older adults, who have suffered greatly during COVID-19, strengthen the social connections that are so essential to their ability to lead longer, healthier lives.” 30 family wellness

For example, AARP Foundation’s Connect2Affect platform equips older adults with the tools they need to stay physically and mentally healthy and connected to their communities. The AARP Essential Rewards Mastercard from Barclays is helping fund the foundation’s work to increase social connection with donations based on new accounts and eligible purchases, up to $1 million annually. A little creativity and a commitment to filling time productively can help reduce the strain of being alone until it’s safer to resume social activities. Use technology to connect with loved ones. Video chats and traditional phone calls can help you feel connected even when you can’t be together in person. While a dropin call can be fun, consider arranging regular visits with kids and grandkids. If you schedule calls throughout the week, you’ll have something regular to look forward to and can benefit from a check-in that affirms everyone is healthy and safe. Make time for physical activity. Staying closer to home may mean you’re not getting the exercise you once did, but it’s important for your health to stay active. Regularly using your muscles helps keep your body strong, and even light physical activity a few times suburban family | subfam.com

each week can help keep your cardiovascular system fit for better heart health. Regular exercise can also provide a range of positive mental health outcomes, including reduced stress, anxiety and depression, and improved memory. Volunteer in your community or consider virtual volunteering. Helping others is a way to release feel-good endorphins for yourself. While your limited social calendar may afford you some extra time, inquire with local nonprofits about how you can contribute to their causes. Especially as funding for charitable organizations has dropped, volunteers are still essential to most nonprofit organizations, whether the help comes in person or virtually. Even from a distance, you may be able to help with tasks like making calls to donors, assisting with mailings or planning fundraising campaigns. Learn a new hobby or skill. Another way to fill your free time, and reap some positive energy, is to explore a new hobby or skill. The personal satisfaction of learning and focusing your mental energy on something that interests you can help offset the disappointment of being away from those you love. Put Your Best

FOOT

FORWARD

W

By Sherry Wells

arm weather has arrived inviting us to jump into our favorite outdoor sports after quarentining all winter. However, a quick move into high physical activity when your feet are not quite ready can cause major injuries to the feet ruining those plans for a summer of fun.

One of the most important ways to obtain good foot health is to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle throughout the year so extra weight does not suddenly adversely impact your feet. If you feel any discomfort with your feet, have them evaluated by your orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeon before beginning an active exercise program. Remember, the feet are the body’s shock absorbers. Orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeons use medical, physical, and rehabilitative methods as well as surgery to treat patients of all ages. Tips for keeping your feet pain-free: Warm up exercises such as a short period of walking and stretching. Stretch again after exercising. Be sure to wear footwear that is specific to the sport. Appropriate training for the specific sport. Impact sports such as running will place greater stress on your feet. Cross-training with “feetfriendly” non-impact activities, such as swim-

ming, biking, elliptical trainers, and steppers. Stephen J. Pinney, MD, of San Francisco, CA, says, “Walking puts more stress on your feet than you might think! Every time you take a step 2-3 times your body weight goes through your feet, more if you are running. That is a lot of cumulative force going through the sole of the foot and the various tendons that control the movement of the foot. This repetitive loading can predispose to many common "chronic" foot conditions such as metatarsalgia, tendinitis, and plantar fasciitis. Metatarsalgia is a painful condition involving the forefoot. It occurs when the tissue in the sole of the forefoot gets irritated and painful from the repetitive loading especially if the force is concentrated in a localized area in the forefoot. He continues, “Tendinitis occurs when a tendon gets excessively overloaded just like a rope that starts to fray after it is subject to wear and tear. The body responds to this type of tendon injury by sending inflammatory mediators to the area and this is what leads to the pain and swelling associated with tendinitis. Depending on which tendons in the foot

are excessively loaded will determine which part of the foot will develop tendinitis. Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of chronic heel pain. It develops as a result of repetitive microtrauma to the heel region. As Dr. Pinney says, “The plantar fascia is a dense tissue that is found in the sole of the foot beginning at the heel bone. With each step a person takes this tissue is loaded. If someone increases the amount of walking they do, walks on hard surfaces, or gains extra weight they may suffer repetitive microtearing of the plantar fascia insertion. This will lead to heel pain, particularly first thing in the morning which is a characteristic sign of plantar fasciitis. To keep those feet healthy, always remember: • Proper shoe wear that is appropriate to the specific sport • Proper evaluation by an orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeon • Adequate training • Stretch before and after exercising • Mix activities through cross training
