Make Summer Vacation Plans NOW! S ummer vacation is a time when students can relax and enjoy their free time. It is a time to catch up on rest, spend time with family and friends, and explore new hobbies or interests. For many students, summer vacation is also a time to continue learning. How will you spend yours?

After the past couple of unprecedented years, kids across the nation are ready for a summer vacation spent playing with friends, participating in sports, and going on family vacations. But the learning loss these kids experienced during the pandemic is still looming over their educational future, and parents are looking for

6 out & about

ways to help their kids enjoy a summer vacation they deserve, while helping them catch up on subjects like science and math. What many parents don’t realize is that taking their child on vacation opens up new learning opportunities. Camping trips, visiting the beach, an amusement park, going on a road trip and more can teach kids a lot about the world of science around them.

Collum, MPH, explain fun ways to turn a family vacation into an educational trip.

and seeing which ones they can find, looking at the moon, visible planets, meteor showers and more by looking at the clear night sky. Beach Trip Kids can learn about high and low tides – which are caused by the moon’s gravitational force. A lot of beaches offer copies of “tide tables” that are used for tidal predication and can show the daily times and levels. Parents can take advantage of low tides and have kids explore tide pools. These are pools of water that are trapped at low tide. Kids can find sea stars, urchins, anemones, seaweed, crabs and sometimes even small fish. Road Trip Road trips are perfect for teaching kids about different geological features and landscapes in states across the U.S. Plants in animals in one state look different from others. Printing out guidebooks can help kids identify what they’re seeing and learn interesting facts. Educational items like the Yellow Scope Acids, bases & pH kit can occupy kids. While passing by different streams of water, lakes or ponds, they can use the kit to measure the different pH levels and compare areas to see which has more or less acidity and why. National Parks Every year, students in 4th grade can get the “Every Kid Outdoors” pass and get free access to national parks across the country. Go to the kid-friendly website; Every Kid Outdoors, and follow the instructions. Kids can become a Junior Park Ranger, a program for kids in national parks that allows them to complete a series of activities during a visit, share their answers with a park ranger and receive an official Junior Ranger patch and certificate. Many parks also have events specifically for kids which can be found at: nps.gov/kids/kidsyouth.htm Amusement Park A trip to Disneyland, Six Flags or any other popular Amusement Park can be a learning opportunity! All around the park, Newton’s laws of motion, centripetal force and potential and kinetic energy is in “motion.” Kids can explore the physics of roller coasters and other amusement park rides while they’re in line for the Superman, Gadget Go’s Coaster and more. great. Juggling too many swing thoughts won’t help. Take a deep breath and enjoy the moment. When you step out onto the first tee this season, remember the cold winter days and be joyful they’re gone. .

Golf Tip: Spring Clean Your Mind The golf season is finally here! The winters can drag on in Chicago, but sun and warmer temperatures have golfers returning to the course. You grab your clubs from storage, toss them in the trunk, and get ready to hit the course.

Perhaps you were able to sneak away from the frigid winter days and play a few rounds in the sun somewhere warm, or maybe you passed the cold months swinging a club inside and waiting to take your game to the first tee. Now, you might be looking for a tip that will give you a little edge or a boost as you return to the course. My season-starting tip does not involve swing mechanics. Instead, advise you to “spring clean your mind!” On the course it’s easy to become obsessed with technique and stress over bad shots. I challenge you to declutter your thoughts and simply stay positive. Think of every shot as a new unique opportunity to do something 24 out & about

Golf Tip: According to White Pines golf professionals Bill Roper and Andrew Godfrey, “Keep your head down” is a common phrase used by many golfers to all their buddies. This is NOT what you want to do when swinging the golf club. Keeping your head down during your swing will restrict your finish and you will not be able to hit it as far. Instead, think about staying in your posture until you hit the ball. Maintaining your posture through your golf swing will help your body from “lifting up” which causes you to top the ball. After you make contact with the golf ball, think about your trail shoulder (for a right-handed golfer that will be your right shoulder) naturally lifting your head to follow where the golf ball goes. This should help you from topping the golf ball. May/June 2022

Things to Consider for Parties By Sherry Wells

For the ‘Annual Party Guide’ edition, we’ve come up with some great ideas for hosting an unforgettable get-together that you can enjoy just as much as your guests do. Afterall, this is a celebration for everyone, including you!

Determine your budget

a virtuoso performance by a kitchen goddess, it requires a communal effort by a group of friends. Divide the meal into categories— appetizer, drink, salad, vegetable, bread, fruit — and assign one to each guest.

Scent the Room—carefully

A DIY dessert bar is the best way to keep party guests entertained and happy as they gather a plate of sophisticated sweets. This will encourage guests to munch, mingle—and you get to stay out of the kitchen. When it comes to drinks, keep it simple: one signature cocktail, water and a nonalcoholic drink. Make sure there’s plenty of ice.

Remember you’re here to party as well! Welcome your guests with a smile and enthusiasm to set the tone for the rest of the night. So long as you’re organized before, there shouldn’t be many issues that arise during the party, so try to relax and enjoy it yourself.

Music sets the mood

How to Make Your Own DIY Photo Booth

Invite plenty of people

While most people are pretty good at keeping a conversation going, you can help your guests by creating a mood by setting the music to an appropriate level and selection.

A potluck is the antithesis of fancy. Instead of

Document the event

A designated kids’ area ensures any party runs smoother. Cover the table with brown Kraft paper to create a doodle-and spill-proof surface. Stock the table with a ready supply of tasty treats and art supplies so the kids can craft and munch the night away.

Keep Kids Occupied

Plan your menu

Welcome your guests

Everybody loves looking back at pictures from a party, but unless you’re lucky enough to have one of those friends who brings a camera to every party and does the work for you, documenting the event can be a pain. Consider the Photo Booth option. Tell your guests to grab a prop, strike a pose and the hashtag to use to share.

The first step to successful party planning is to decide how much you want to spend. Be realistic and concentrate on where you’d like to splurge and save. If you don’t have a lot of time, you can spend more money to get things done for you. If you don’t have a big budget, plan to spend more time on DIY projects to get the party you’re looking for. There’s no magic number of guests; it depends on the personalities and the space. Fifteen may feel crowded; 40 may feel sparse. You just don’t want it to feel empty. Send your invites about three weeks before the party to avoid people making conflicting plans.

There’s a fine line between catching a whiff of a subtle, minty aroma and feeling like you’re being suffocated.

Set your stage

Even if you’re the type of person who picks up a bunch of carnations, throws them in a vase and calls that decorating, you can create a Pinterestworthy party space without stressing out. suburban family | subfam.com

Life Lessons Learned at Camp By Janeen Lewis

A

sk anyone who has ever been to overnight camp about his or her experience, and you will hear endless tales of comradery, cabin mates and campfires. Many times campers will say overnight camp was the first time they rode a horse or shot a bow and arrow or flew down a zip line. It’s where they learned to make their beds and keep their belongings tidy in cramped quarters. With the perfect blend of adventure and responsibility, camp life teaches kids valuable lessons they can use for the rest of their lives. If you send your child to overnight camp, here are some life lessons they are likely to learn.

As they grow up, kids have to learn to work in groups in their communities. “That cabin group has community building at its core,” says Rosenberg. How to embrace diversity Children who go to camp meet other campers from all over the country. They meet kids from different socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. In a study conducted by Philliber Research Associates and the American Camp Association, 94 percent of campers said “Camp helped me get to know other campers who were different from me.”

How to communicate face-to-face Tom Rosenberg, President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Camp Association, says today’s youth spends so much time on technology, that learning to communicate face-to-face with peers is important. He quotes a Pew Research Center study that says “Just 25 percent of teens spend time with friends in person outside of the school day on a regular basis.” In light of that statistic, overnight camp is good place to get kids to socialize without technology. “About 90 percent of camps don’t allow kids to have computers or cell phones,” says Rosenberg. “In general, camps are an oasis for human-powered socialization.” How to be independent For many children, camp is the first time they are away from parents and the familiarity of home. While this may cause some homesickness, it also gives children an opportunity to overcome being homesick. And without parents there, children learn to pick up after themselves and keep up with their things. Overnight camp can also prepare students for independence in their next steps in life, like trips abroad and college. How to be a part of community living Sometimes it’s hard to live with other people, especially if other people drape their clothes over your bed or hog the shower. And it’s not like kids can escape to their own room when they are at summer camp because everyone bunks together in one cabin. But kids can learn to work out differences they may

32 active kids

have about how they share their living spaces, and it’s more fun for campers to do the cabin chores together than alone.

suburban family | subfam.com

Rosenberg says this is important for kids in the 21st Century. “Making new friends is an essential skill kids are going to need to have.” How to overcome fears Going to camp takes kids out of their normal day-to-day setting and gives them a chance to try things they might not try when they are at home. In the Philliber study, 74 percent of the kids surveyed said “At camp I did things I was afraid to do at first.” Children may feel more comfortable taking a risk around new acquaintances than they do under the watchful eye of parents, siblings or school peers. If they are trying an activity they have never tried before, they may feel encouraged by staff or counselors who are there to support and guide them. How to become resilient Camp life doesn’t always go as planned, and kids learn to adapt and move with what’s happening around them. Camp goers also grow more resilient from trying again when they fail, according to Rosenberg. “Part of growing up is learning that you are not always going to be successful. Sometimes campers fail and counselors help them try again,” says Rosenberg. “Camp is a safe place to make mistakes.” Going to overnight camp benefits kids in many ways. It provides a place where kids can get out of their daily setting and have new adventures, meet new people and learn new skills. And while they are doing all of those things, they will probably learn a few life lessons that will stay with them forever. May/June 2022

Your camp forms are filled out and you know where the bus drop-off point is. Now it’s time for the final step in getting your camper ready for camp – packing! It’s a good idea to know exactly what you need to bring to camp that might not otherwise be found there. For the most part, you should bring all the necessary hygiene essentials like toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, and other necessities. Things like googles for swimming, bedding, towels, and snacks might be worth asking about. #1 Print out and use the packing list your camp provides! #2 Have your camper do most of the work. #3 Label EVERYTHING. #4 Roll outfits or place in large zippered storage bags. #5 Include some extras items kids will enjoy. If you start packing days before you need to leave for camp, you’re less likely to forget or remember that you didn’t pack something. The last thing you want to do is to be in a rush packing 30 minutes before leaving for camp, which will only increase your odds of forgetting something. Do yourself a favor and have everything you need to pack a day before. Also, do your future self a favor and create a packing list of everything that you packed.

Make Room for Self-Care By Catherine Gibel

A

h self-care. It’s on your to-do list. You’ll make time for it. You’re just too busy right now. If you don’t run your household and your business, who will? To our own detriment, we prioritize everyone and everything else. I haven’t met a mother who doesn’t struggle with this, myself included. For the longest time my motto was “I’ve got this.” You’ve got an autoimmune disease and you need surgery, your husband has to go to Germany for work and will be gone for two weeks, your son’s social anxiety is crippling and he’s miserable, you need to start marketing the new branch of the company you work for oh and you move in three weeks. Sound familiar? I’VE. GOT. THIS. I didn’t.

Shift your mindset

Why is your yoga class not as important as a conference call or dance recital? You committed to both the call and recital so, why are the promises you made yourself any less important? They aren’t.

Decide and re-prioritize

What do you need? What do you want more of? Time alone? Time with friends? Exercise? Don’t focus on all the things you should be doing or what others around you are doing. Pick one or two needs and focus your efforts on those. I had to make time for a new diet and exercise regimen. That wasn’t an option.

However, I wanted to make friends in my new community and read more books so, I joined a local mom’s book club.

Make room

In the same way you have to schedule everything for everyone all the time yes, you have to schedule this too. If you can block the same day(s) and time(s) every week, even better. It’s much easier to schedule around a reoccurring event. This will likely require some reevaluating. Yes, you can say “no” to organizing the classroom party. Yes, your kids can do two instead of three extracurricular activities a quarter and be perfectly content.

In organizing a “perfectly balanced” schedule, I failed to block out any time for myself. As an organized person, that was hard to accept. The harder truth? I realized that if I don’t make room for me, no one else will. I need to make it happen, but how? I can barely handle what’s already on my plate. May/June 2022

Organization helps!

Here are a few, fun ideas to help you maximize your me time: A mobile gym. Use an under-the-bed box to store a yoga mat, strap, block, and weights under a bed or couch. Spa basket. Put a washcloth, loofah, nail brush, and your favorite soaps, lotions, serums, and masks in a pretty basket that you keep under the sink or on a shelf in your linen closet. Use a pretty zippered pouch to create an on-the-go version for your purse or car with your favorite lip balm, hand lotion, essential oil, nail file, tea bag, and mantra card to squeeze in a few extra minutes while you’re waiting in the school pick-up line. Hobby kits. Knitting. Calligraphy. Scrapbooking. Painting. Place all your necessary tools in a handled caddy to keep them all in one place. It’s easy to carry and put back.

Ask for help

Somewhere along the way we decided that asking for help makes us weak or lesser than. It doesn’t. Buddy up. Talk to a friend about what you want and what you’re trying to do. Hold each other accountable. That’s what we do with our clients. When we schedule

a session, we’re making a promise that we’ll be there to help them tackle their organizing dilemma. Find ways each family member can pitch in. Yes, you will have to keep asking your kids over and over because they will forget but, keep asking. It’s worth the time you’re gaining for yourself. Once a week, my neighbor and I take turns caring for each other’s kids so we can each go to a workout class we love. I volunteer once instead of twice a month in my son’s class. We eat leftovers three nights a week. My boys do their laundry. Guess what? Everything is okay and everyone is still alive. Is life still chaotic? Yes! That won’t change. What has changed is the value I place on my time and my need for self-care. My new motto? “I am worth it.” Don’t break one more promise you made yourself. Make this week the week you make room for self-care. The time and space you give yourself to recover, reflect, and re-energize will make you, your relationships, your business stronger and, a happier summer. YOGI KIDS By Christa Melnyk Hines

any adults swear by the ancient practice of yoga for stress relief; to improve flexibility, balance and strength; and to enhance daily focus. With playful names like downward dog, cat, cow and gorilla, yoga poses easily inspire the imagination of the younger set.

parents report that they struggle to manage the stress of jobs and family responsibilities. Since children pick up on the tensions of their caregivers, they may internalize more stress too. Multiple studies have found that yoga offers effective stress relief for all ages. “In this fast-paced world in which we live, children need to know how to relax and breathe and mindfully move through their day,” says yoga instructor Katy Henderson. “Teaching children how to breathe in yoga allows them to take that crucial breathe before they get mad, angry or frustrated.” Focus power. In a study conducted by School Psychology Review, researchers found that regular yoga practice can help children with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) learn to calm their minds and focus on the present, improving on-task time and attention. And thanks to the proliferation of distracting electronic devices, even kids who don’t suffer from ADHD can benefit. The mindfulness techniques that yoga practice offers can help kids re-focus on the present and concentrate on tasks like homework and chores that require their undivided attention.

Libbey York enrolled her sons Graham, 8, and Lawson, 4, in a children’s yoga class last summer thinking they could meet friends and try something new. Their response surprised her.

Strike a pose. According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 12 million kids between the ages of two and 19 years old are considered obese. Yoga offers a gentle way to get kids moving, strengthen muscles, improve flexibility and practice gross motor skills.

“They couldn’t stop talking about all of their new moves and practicing their poses all around the house,” she says.

“For the child who is not particularly active, yoga provides an avenue to move in a playful, engaging way,” Henderson says.

Graham likes practicing seated crossed-leg pose, and Lawson loves to show off his tree pose. In addition to enhancing her sons’ flexibility and strength, “the class improved their focus and body awareness as they attempted the poses,” says York, who is also a yoga practitioner and instructor. Linking mind and body.Yoga, which in Sanskrit means “to yoke,” nurtures a connection between the mind, body and spirit. Balancing poses like airplane and tree, for example, strengthen muscles and also require mental focus and concentration to achieve and hold. Overall, multiple studies have found that yoga can help kids improve academic performance, physical fitness, self-awareness, self-esteem, concentration, emotional balance and behavior. Slow down and breathe. In a “Stress in America” survey conducted by the American Psychological Association, more parents than non42 fitness first

Spread the love. “Yoga fosters self acceptance and actualization. It invites all participants to improve concentration and focus, and even helps develop selfcompassion and compassion for others,” writes Kristin Henningsen, adjunct professor at Kaplan University School of Health Sciences in her report “The Benefits of Yoga for Children.” Pauline Emmett, a YoKid Ambassador, agrees.“In practicing yoga, children experience better self-esteem, and therefore have the confidence to trust themselves as being strong and capable beings,” she says. “We talk about self-love, and how if we love ourselves we can better care for our friends, family and the world.” To learn more about area classes and workshops for your kids, visit namastekid.com or check out your local community center, area gyms and yoga studios.

I

t’s graduation season and an exciting time for both high school and college seniors. You’ve done the work, studied hard and now it’s time to walk across the stage to Pomp and Circumstance and receive your diploma. When all the fanfare dies down, what is your next move? Get a job? Start your own business? What do you need to do to become successful? For many students, it’s a very confusing time and one filled with doubt and uncertainty. The good news is, there are a number of steps you can take to ensure success no matter what your intended career path, whether you get a traditional job or go the entrepreneurial route. Get around successful people The absolute best way to excel at something is from someone who has already successfully accomplished it or is far more advanced in it than you. Follows these people carefully. Even in your immediate circle, get around people who think big and want to make something of themselves because it will have a direct impact on your performance. Remember, winners attract winners. Grind your heart out Whether you decide to go the more traditional route and join a company, or your heart is set on entrepreneurship and you want to build something of your own, in the beginning you must grind your heart out like never before. The days will be long. You must put in more blood, sweat and tears than you think you have. 46 education central

In the end, that’s how you grow into something massive, and it will have all been worth it. Never stop learning Just because you are done with traditional schooling, the real learning begins now. The truth is the most successful people never quit learning. They might not go back to school, but they read books by other successful people, attend seminars, and are always looking to improve themselves personally and professionally. They know the only way to get ahead and stay ahead is to always keep learning. Fail over and over again Yes, you read that right! One of the best ways to succeed is to fail time and again. Anyone at the top of their field is really nothing more than a professional failure. Instead of accepting defeat and letting it take them down, they learned from their mistakes and made the decision to comeback bigger and better than ever before. Welcome failure with open arms.

and your business. Will you hit them? Maybe not. But when your goals are to the point where they seem unattainable, your work ethic and performance goes through the roof. Develop your emotional intelligence It’s not always the smartest people who become the most successful. It’s the people who know how to interact with other people or who have a very high emotional intelligence that succeed. They listen when others speak. They smile and make eye contact. They care. They remember details. They know how to make you feel important. These are skills that anyone can learn, but unfortunately, many overlook. The takeaway Welcome to the real world! No one said it’s going to be easy. If you want success, you’re going to have to fight hard for it. It is doable. The question is: how bad do you want it? Class of ’22’ go out there and change the world!

More than relationships We’ve all heard the phrase, “it’s not what you know but who you know.” Take that one step further and it should really say, “It’s who knows you and is willing to admit it.” Get to the point where your colleagues and customers are family. When you truly have each other’s backs and you treat one another like a blood relative, that’s a real relationship that builds business for years and years to come. Go big or go home In the Cardone household, nothing is average or ordinary. We either go big or we don’t go at all. There’s no point in trying anything, especially starting a business, if you are only halfway in.
