hh, fall! Hopefully it means a break from oppressive summer heat, and it definitely means fun times are ahead. Fall might find us grabbing my mom and heading to a local pumpkin patch. Another weekend we might be sampling banana-flavored milk at our nearby dairy farm. Below are 10 ideas for fall traditions to start with your own family. Pick and choose a few each year … or try to sneak them all in! 1. Go natural. A nature center is a great way to spend a cool fall day or evening. Many have walking or hiking trails nearby, so you get not only memories and education but also exercise. Some have night hikes and other fun programs for the kids where they can see animals like owls, snakes and bats up close. Head to the Internet to find a nature center local to you. 2. Animal instinct. Fall is a great time to head to the zoo because the animals are more likely to be outside due to the break from the heat. Pack your lunch and a camera and make it a day! 6 seasons

3. Go to market. Many cities have outdoor markets with fresh fruit, veggies, flowers and other fun items (pumpkins and gourds!) local farmers bring in to sell. A farmer’s market is a cool way to spend a Saturday morning before heading out to another fall activity. 4. An apple a day. Head to a local apple orchard for some picking, and then make simple cobbler, pie, applesauce, cinnamon apples and more. PickYourOwn.org has by state (even by country!) listings for just about every U-Pick orchard fruit you can think of! Then fire up your computer and go to www.allrecipes.com to find unique and traditional recipes for any fruit dish you can think of. 5. Go milk a cow. My kids still talk about the time we went to a local dairy farm for a fall field trip. They got to see how cows are milked by machines, how they are cleaned, how milk is processed and – the best part – they got to sample different flavors of milk. I don’t have a cool website for you here, folks. You’ll just have to Google “dairy farms” then your city, then find out from there if they give tours. 6. Go find it … the old fashioned way. Have some of your kid’s friends over for a scavenger hunt, assign them to teams and give them a list of things you want them to go find. The team that comes back with all the items on the list first is the winner. For fun fall scavsuburban family | subfam.com

enger hunt ideas for kids of all ages, click on www.partyjoys.com/articles/scavenger-huntfor-kids.html. 7. Go find it … using technology. According to the website www.Geocaching. com, “geocaching is a real-world outdoor treasure hunting game. Players try to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, using GPS-enabled devices and then share their experiences online.” On this site parents and kids can search for caches in their area then go hunt them down. When you find the cache, you sign a logbook, and sometimes there’s a small prize for you to take (but you must also leave something behind!). 8. Leaf it to the kids. Rake up the leaves and jump in them. Take lots of pictures and video! When you’re done, hunt down some favorite leaves in different colors and make a leaf collage. Glue leaves to a piece of construction paper and paint designs on them. 9. Light up the night. Get a bunch of families together from school, church or the neighborhood for a game of flashlight tag in a park. Check out https://considerable.com/flashlighttag/ for the rules. 10. Patch things up. Meet up with some friends at a pumpkin patch to hunt for pumpkins and funky gourds in colors like salmon and white. September/October 2018

attack that bottoms out the club’s arc before impact. Add backward bend in the downswing and follow-through The best ball strikers start bending the upper body slightly back (away from the target) in the downswing and follow-through, which helps to straighten the arms into impact and shallow the club’s angle of attack. These ideal elements conversely encourage a low point in front of the ball, which leads to the ball-first contact we all strive for. Give it a try, and you’ll soon start seeing pure golf shots fly down the fairway rather than those frustrating chunks of earth!

Chunked or fat shots are often the result of having a “low point,” the vertically lowest point of the swing’s arc, too far behind the ball. What we see with many golfers that chunk their irons is the upper body bends too far forward in the downswing and then stays there during the follow-through. This results in a bending of the arms and steep angle of

gimme putt. Many amateurs try this shot from too close to the green which is the wrong choice, only to be disappointed because: 1) it’s difficult to make a short pitch land where you want it to, and 2) the ball rarely stops without running 10 to 20 feet. The truth is, the easier shot to play from within 10 yards is a low running chip that lands quickly and runs most of the distance to the pin. It’s played with a low lofted iron, 4-5-6 or 7, and the idea is to loft the ball just enough to get over the fringe grass. The low loft of the iron puts little spin on the ball and you can count on it running, even if you miss hit it. The shot is played with no hand action, just arms, very similar to a putt. Set-up like a putt and stroke the iron with the same force you would use if you were putting the same distance. It’s very easy to do, doesn’t have to be hit precisely and brings smiles at those easy up and down pars. September/October 2018

GET HOMEWORK DONE

WITHOUT A FIGHT By Carol Tuttle

W

hen it comes to your child's homework, do you beg, plead, or bribe? Do you threaten consequences? You can make homework easier for both you and your children with some simple tips that honor their natural energy. Every child has a dominant Energy Type that determines the way they move through life. It affects everything they do—playing, talking, eating, sleeping. And yes, it even shows up in the way they do homework! Ready to take the struggle out of homework? Here are homework tips for the 4 Types of children:

Homework Tips for the Fun-loving Type 1 Child.

These bright-minded children think quickly and like to move. Their thought process works like snapshots of ideas, so engaging in a linear experience can be challenging for them. • Pre-homework playtime. If your child attends a traditional school, they need time to do something light and free before jumping into homework. Let them come up with ideas of what they’ll do—that will give them something to look forward to during the structured experience of school. • Homework jumping. Allow them to jump from one activity to another. That’s how their brain works anyway. Extra movement of things 32 education central

going on in the background is actually helpful for them because it allows them to disconnect from their homework and then connect again.

Homework Tips for the Sensitive Type 2 Child

These subtle children work methodically and are great with details. They are naturally quieter, so speaking up about what they might need can be a challenge for them. • Planned routine (one that they plan). These children do best when they have a plan that they have made themselves. Which steps will they follow to get things done? You can ask this very young (5 or 6 years old) as Type 2 children are already thinking this way. • Invitation to connect. Type 2 children often want their parents to recognize the work they’re doing without knowing how to ask for it. Take a second to connect with them while they’re working and invite them to share with you.

Homework Tips for the Determined Type 3 Child

These active children move swiftly and like getting things done. Their natural speed can be a challenge when it comes to detailed tasks they feel are tedious or pointless. • Help them see the point of it. These children will do homework when they see the point. If they don’t see it, they’ll try to get around it somehow. They’ll pick the grade they want and do as much as they have to do to get it done. Help them see the practical purpose. • Make homework part of the extracurricular fund. Money is a great motivator in suburban family | subfam.com

the Type 3 world. If you plan to pay for extracurricular activities, you could attach a money value to finishing homework and that money goes to a sport or lesson they really want. You’ll be spending the money anyway and they’ll enjoy the feeling of accomplishment as they work toward an activity they really want. The More Serious Type 4 Child. These focused children are self-motivated. But if they’re not respected for who they are at school, they’ll buck the system. It will look like rebellion, but it’s really just their attempt to stay true to their nature. • The respectful phrase. These children feel offended when you tell them what to do because they’re aware of their responsibilities. Try this phrase: “Looks like you’re doing great. Let me know if you need help.” Let them come to you, which they will, if they think they need help. • Ownership of a space. Set aside one consistent place that they can take ownership of at the same time every day to do their homework—not the kitchen table. If possible, get them their own desk or a place that’s separate from where everyone is moving around. Parents: here’s your homework assignment to end the homework struggle for good: Set the intention that you and your child are experiencing ease and enjoyment as you support them in their homework. It’s possible and you can start today. Carol Tuttle is author of ‘The Child Whisperer: the Ultimate Handbook for Raising Happy, Successful, Cooperative Children.’ thechildwhisperer.com. The Importance of Self-Advocacy for Kids With Learning and Attention Issues

A

By Andrew M.I. Lee, J.D.

s a loving parent, you advocate for your child’s needs. You talk with teachers, family members and others about those needs. And you help your child get support in and out of school.

understand their strengths and weaknesses, know what they need to succeed and communicate that to other people. Self-advocacy can be broken down into a few key elements: • Understanding specific needs. (This is part of self-awareness.) • Knowing what help or support will address those needs, like tutoring or classroom accommodations. • Communicating those needs to teachers and others.

Part of being an effective advocate is teaching your child the skills needed for self-advocacy. It’s something you can start working on early with your child—and continue to work on over time. You can build the foundation for selfadvocacy when your child is young and then teach more complex skills to grade-schoolers, middle-schoolers and high-schoolers.

Let’s say your child struggles with writing. She has a history class that requires taking a lot of notes for homework. Without some kind of writing support, this presents a challenge. Here’s an example of self-advocacy in action: Your child understands that taking notes is going to be a challenge and knows that voice recognition software helps with note-taking. So your child communicates to the teacher

What Is Self-Advocacy? Self-advocacy is a skill that allows kids to

that writing is a challenge and asks to use voice recognition software. If the teacher says yes, your child’s needs are addressed. If the teacher says no, your child understands to talk to another person, like the special education case manager. Explore self-advocacy sentence starters your child can use for different types of learning and attention issues. The Benefits of Self-Advocacy Self-advocacy helps kids learn by creating solutions for challenges in school. In the note-taking example above, the child would do better in class by using voice recognition software. Of course, a parent could also advocate for voice recognition software. But when kids self-advocate, there are extra benefits. Kids who exercise self-advocacy can: Find solutions to challenges parents may • not be aware of

• Build self-confidence in the ability to learn • Create a sense of ownership over their learning • Develop independence and self-empowerment These extra benefits can make a big difference for long-term success. Instead of feeling powerless and dependent on others, kids with self-advocacy skills are prepared to take on life’s challenges. The benefits of self-advocacy go beyond academics. Kids who can effectively self-advocate can communicate in social situations and even explain to friends why they sometimes need extra help. How to Build Self-Advocacy in Kids Because self-advocacy is so important, you may want to take specific steps to help your child build this skill. Here are some ways to help your child develop self-advocacy: • Talk with your child about strengths and weaknesses. • Have ongoing conversations about learning and attention issues. • Remind your child that asking for help is a good thing. • Praise your child’s efforts at speaking up. • Encourage your child to use classroom accommodations. • Find a role model, like a mentor with learning and attention issues, for your child. • When a problem comes up, give your child a chance to solve it before stepping in. • Let your child have a say in educational decisions. • If your child has an IEP, encourage her to attend IEP meetings. • Consider adding self-advocacy goals to your child’s IEP. • Teach your child about legal rights and how to talk about them in a positive, constructive way. As with any valuable skill, self-advocacy takes practice. Continue to role-play situations that may come up to help your child feel more comfortable about asking for help. Self-advocacy isn’t easy for many kids. Shy children, for example, may need different support in learning how to self-advocate. Other children may feel awkward or even guilty about asking for help or for an accommodation. That’s especially true if your child feels embarrassed about her learning or attention issues. Teaching self-advocacy can be an important part of your own journey as an advocate. Selfadvocacy skills can help your child deal with current challenges and the ones that will arise in the future.

ince opening its doors in 1926, the Chicago Shriners Hospital has helped children with orthopedic conditions, cleft lip and palate, craniofacial anomalies, and rehabilitation needs. Located in Chicago, near the historic village of Oak Park, Shriners Hospital treats children from around the Midwest. Our world-class medical team offers state-of-the-art medical care right in your back yard, and may have treatment options that could benefit your child.

In recent years we have seen an increased need for sports injury-related care, such as stable fractures and joint injuries. In order to meet this growing demand and to continue to grow our orthopaedic services, Shriners Hospitals for Children – Chicago welcomed Dr. Kelsey Davidson, MD, orthopedic surgeon, to the staff. Millions of children participate in organized sports each year, and since their bones, tendons and muscles are still growing and developing they may have a higher risk of a sportrelated injury. Whether it’s meniscal tears, ankle injuries, cartilage injuries, fractures or dislocations, our program offers a team-approach treatment plan for your child’s sports injury. Dr. Davidson joins a talented team of pediatric orthopaedic surgeons at Shriners Hospitals for Children Chicago and together they offer comprehensive care for a child’s sports’ injury. In addition to sports-related care, our spine service is renowned. Historically, most schools provided scoliosis (curvature of the spine) screening for students. Since this is no longer mandated in Illinois, it is imperative that parents ensure their child is screened elsewhere, as early detection can improve outcomes. Shriners Hospitals for Children Chicago not only offers scoliosis screening; we are also a pediatric rehabilitation site with an array of treatment options for children with moderate to severe scoliosis using both surgical and non-surgical methods. suburban family | subfam.com

Our family-centered care and team approach continues with the pediatric plastics and craniofacial team.Whether your child has a cleft lip or palate or another craniofacial anomaly, parents will see a group of specialists, all in one day, to ensure that every area of their child’s care is accounted for. This team also offers treatment for craniofacial microsomia, hemifacial microsomia, Pierre Robin syndrome, Stickler syndrome, Goldenhar syndrome, Treacher Collins syndrome, Nagar syndrome, maxillofacial skeletal deformities, pigmented and vascular lesions, hemangiomas/vascular malformations, and ear anomalies. As more physicians are looking for head shape anomalies in infants, including torticollis and flat head, our Head Shape Clinic detects and addresses these conditions as well. dults often complain they are “stressed out.” Increasingly, statistics show, American children are stressed out as well, and the effects on their health, emotional state, and cognitive ability can be significant.

cally active release stress as well as build confidence,” McGregor says. “And they sleep better, which in turn makes them better equipped to take on their day.” • Take care of yourself, slow down. Children are aware of their surroundings and look to their caregiver for support. “If a caregiver is not fully equipped to handle their own stress, they certainly can’t fully support a child,” McGregor says. “We often are in such a hurry that many of the basic necessities of care-giving are rushed through. Children can feel the stress caregivers are experiencing and often will act out.” • Teach them relaxation techniques. Just as parents teach children how to throw a baseball or build a tower with blocks, they should also teach them how to cope with stressful situations in life, McGregor says. “There are ways to do this, such as count down from 10, or ‘breathe in the soup, blow out the soup.’ It slows down their ‘hyperstate’ of accelerated heart rate and fast breathing.” “Most parents have the skills to deal with their child’s stress,” McGregor adds. “The time to seek professional help for a child’s stress is when any change in behavior persists, or when the stress is causing problems at home or school.”

4 Ways To Help Your Child Deal With

It’s well-documented that adult stress can lead to serious illnesses. But many researchers believe that ongoing stress during childhood – from poverty, parents fighting or substance abuse, bullying, violence or other adversity – can harm kids’ brains and other body systems and possibly lead to major health issues when they’re adults. Therefore, it is vital for parents to help their children cope with stress. “Adults can handle more stress than children, because our brains are already formed and we have many more coping skills,” says Alise McGregor, founder of Little Newtons (littlenewtons.com), an early education center with locations in Minnesota and Illinois. “Research shows there are lasting effects from stress on kids’ development. Not exposing your child to any stress at home, of course, is ideal, but in today’s world there is so much affecting kids that parents need to know how to help them

By Alise McGregor through it.” Statistics cited in a greatschools.org article reflect the higher levels of stress that American children are experiencing: suicides among adolescents have quadrupled since the 1950s; and in the past decade, using pharmaceuticals to treat emotional disorders has increased 68 percent for girls, 30 percent for boys. McGregor suggests four ways parents can help their children cope with stress: • Listen to them and communicate. “By listening to them, you are acknowledging their feelings but also strengthening the trust/bond you have with your child,” McGregor says. “Trust is so important in childhood. They feel supported and feel better being able to get it off their chest.” • Exercise. This is easy, fun and often necessary as a coping mechanism.“Children who are physi-

Food for Family Gatherings

F

amily gatherings like reunions, picnics and potlucks can bring fun, the chance to reunite with family and, of course, food and celebration.

While catching up with family is most important for many, food typically comes in a close second. Tried-and-true favorites are welcome, but so are new additions. This starter duo of Baked Onion, Goat Cheese and Sun-Dried Tomato Dip along with Orange Galette with Beet Gorgonzola Salad can get the celebration going. To help mix things up, take a break from sandwiches. Chipotle Chicken and Bean Quinoa Salad Cups are a contemporary meal or snack alternative which kids and adults alike can enjoy. For a salad that feeds a crowd, try this Tex-Mex Layered Bean Salad, a tasty accompaniment for entrees from burgers to fried chicken. For more recipes for family gatherings, visit READsalads.com and AuntNellies.com.

T

runk or Treat is a fun alternative to traditional trick-ortreating. A school or church parking lot is divided into larger parking spaces where car owners decorate their open trunks and pass out candy. This is a great option for young children who can’t walk far or for families looking for a safer option for receiving candy. Trunk or Treats can be held at your block party, school or church and is often used as a fundraiser. A typical fee for renting a parking space is $25 for each car entered.

40 celebrate!

By Pam Molnar Find a space – If you are hosting in your neighborhood, cars can park at the end of their driveway or in front of their house. Churches or school parking lots can section off space for the event while leaving parking for the guests. Cars should pull in with their trunks facing out to walk space and a parking space should be left empty between each car. This gives you plenty of room for displays, trick-or-treaters or photo opportunities. Establish Sponsors – If your trunk or treat is limited to your block, participants can usually provide the candy. However, if you are planning a bigger event, it is wise to look for donations. For churches and schools, ask families to donate bags of candy. Contact local stores and restaurants to see if they are willing to make a donation in the form of candy, raffle items or monetary donations in exchange for advertising.

suburban family | subfam.com

Get the Parents Involved – Nothing says fall like a chili cook-off. Encourage the parents to bring their favorite chili recipe and have everyone vote for their favorite. Not a chili fan? How about a mac & cheese tasting? For fundraising events, charge a small entrance fee, such as $5, to help defer the cost of the plates, utensils and napkins. Concessions – While the kids would enjoy a dinner of just candy, the adults may prefer something more substantial. Hot dogs, sandwiches or pizza by the slice are simple crowd pleasers at a Trunk or Treat event. If you are hosting a chili cook-off, sell baked potatoes and make it a meal. Be sure to provide plenty of water bottles and offer fall drinks such as apple cider and hot chocolate. Bake Sale – Who can resist freshly baked treats? Fall is a great time to overindulge in pumpkin flavored everything. Start a Sign Up! Genius and have people sign up for what they are baking so you don’t have 50 batches of chocolate chip cookies. Be sure to think about the families with allergies and offer a recipe or ingredients list to go along with the item so everyone can find something they can enjoy. Volunteers – Get the teens involved. A Trunk or Treat is a fun way for teens to get community service hours and still be a part of trick-or-treating. Teens can run the concessions, bounce house, craft stations or even dress up in costume to pose with the trickor-treaters. Finishing Touches – Let’s keep this party going! Set up simple craft tables or stations with coloring sheets for the little ones who are tired of walking. Dress up your pets for a simple parade around the parking lot. Rent a bounce house or ask the fire department if they can bring a truck out for touring. Contact a local farmer to bring out animals for a petting zoo. Offer a pie eating contest and make them eat without using their hands. Raffles and Prizes – Offer prizes for best trunk theme, best costume for kids and adults (or pets). Offer $1 raffles for donated prize baskets for children or adults. Choose themes such as coffee, baking, pasta, pampering, crafts, sports, science or movie night. If you get enough donations, offer a raffle for a larger prize like a tablet or gift certificate for a family night out. September/October 2018

Indoor School Fundraiser Idea: Who has the

Hallowinning Doorway? Host an indoor Trunk or Treat using the school staff and teacher’s doorways. Each classroom comes up with a theme, donates the money for supplies and helps to make decorations. Choose groups of students to help with the theme and decorations for the physical education teacher and other staff that may not have a classroom. Instead of candy, donations of pencils, erasers, pencil sharpeners, bookmarks, small crafts kits, temporary tattoos, mini Frisbees, yo-yos or other small toys might be a nice alternative. Have a ballot box to vote for best doorway design and offer a pizza party for the winning classroom. Include a raffle for popular books that can be displayed in the library in the weeks leading up to the event. Don’t forget to set up collection boxes for other schools in need. Collect school supplies, winter coats, books or after school snacks for your local food pantry.

10 Lessons Kids Can Learn I

pretty much failed at every athletic endeavor I tried growing up… anything I was introduced to in PE class which resembled a sport, that cringe-worthy summer of softball, and those two hilarious years of ballet and tap. You’d think I’d try to steer my own kids away from sports, but instead I do what I can to encourage them to give any sport a shot. Here are some of the cool things I told them they could learn:

side in the cold or heat. Think about how you have to show up at school or you fail. This extends into more areas of your life later on, like friendship, family, work and marriage. Be the kind of person who shows up because it’s going to be a real stand-out character trait. 3. Learning how to handle disappointment will carry you through life. When you’re older, you may get fired from a job, fail a college exam, tank a few relationships. It’s okay to experience losing when you’re young … it prepares you for life later. But try to be a good loser because it looks ridiculous when people act like big babies over something that is meant to be played in fun.

1. Trying something new might lead to unexpected things. First of all, you might have more fun than you thought you would, and you might make some amazing friends. It’s a break from screens and the routine of home life. At the very least, you are getting some exercise and learning a new skill!

4. Being a good winner shows character. Learning how to be a graceful winner is just as important as learning how to be a graceful loser. Gloating and bragging are not cute in kids and definitely are not cute in adults. Shake hands and tell kids from the other team they did a great job.

2. Showing up is half the battle. You might not feel like doing to the practices and games, especially if a losing streak has visited your team, you’re having an issue with a teammate or are tired of playing out-

5. It’s not always going to be fair. No matter what the call is or how the other team plays, you should always play fair. You know what is right, so do it. A good athlete – and person – is honest and trustworthy. Also,

a ref may make a call that was seen from a different angle or viewpoint and you know for a fact it was one way, but you still have to respect that call. 6. Teamwork is everything. You will always need this skill so listen to others, respect differences, support others. Succeed or fail, but do it together. Every member of the team is important so don’t downplay your place (or the place of others) on the team. 7. Confidence and passion make up for a lack in ability many times. You will go into a game more confident if you made all the team practices and also practiced extra at home. Not the best kicker on the soccer team? Feel that inner confidence, take a deep breath and just keep trying. Don’t be scared to fail, do your best, practice and try your hardest. 8. Mistakes are how we learn … and something we all make. You may want to groan when someone on your team doesn’t make an easy shot but instead try to understand they are still learning or maybe their mind wandered ... they are just kids like you. Don’t have a fit if the ref makes a bad call or if the coach takes someone out then loses the game. You are also going to mess up sometimes and you want the same patience from your teammates, refs, other parents and coaches. 9. Leadership opportunities always present themselves. I love the teams who rotate the team captain responsibility so they can all give it a try and see if they have a strength they didn’t realize they had. Even if you are not captain you can still exhibit leadership skills by helping out younger kids or kids who need help with their skills. Help where you can, even if that just means handing out snacks and drinks after the games. 10. Downtime is okay. Ah, patience. Sometimes there is waiting around in sports. Some sports move more slowly than others, and some teams have more players than others. Sometimes you’ll have to play the entire game and sometimes you’ll be sitting out for half of it. Use downtime to make friends on the bench … but don’t forget to cheer on your team. What will you and your kid learn if you give sports a chance? September/October 2018

hen I was in college, I was the skinny girl who could eat whatever she wanted and not gain a pound -- bottomless chips and queso, huge bowls of pasta, bloomin’ onions -- you name it, I ate it. But ten years, three pregnancies, and three dress sizes later, I struggled with my selfimage for the first time in my life. I constantly compared myself to other young moms wondering how they had lost their baby weight while I still carried mine around. I hated going home to my small town because people I had known my whole life didn’t recognize me. Strangers asked me several times when my baby was due when I wasn’t even pregnant. Then, to make matters worse, a difficult loss plunged me into a deep depression, and I gained an extra ten pounds on my already overweight figure. My overeating and obsessive soda-drinking was damaging my body, but I didn’t know how else to deal with the grief. I needed to exercise, but in my depression, the last thing I wanted to do was put on my running shoes. I couldn’t start eating better, losing weight, and feeling healthier unless I made a change, but I knew that I didn’t have it in me to do it alone. I decided to develop a competition with friends who wanted to not only lose weight but build life-long healthy habits. I came up with a list of rules, hoping for three or four women to join me in accountability. To “qualify” for my competition, participants had to be at least 20 pounds overweight and willing to donate $10 towards a prize pot. Over a pe-

riod of 15 weeks, we would earn daily points for drinking 8-10 glasses of water, eating six servings of fruits and vegetables, posting a detailed food journal, staying within a daily calorie goal, and recording every 10 minutes of exercise. Each Monday, we would weigh in and earn points for every pound lost, and the person with the highest percentage of weight loss that week would earn extra points. At the end of the 15 weeks, the woman with the most cumulative points and the woman with the highest percentage of weight loss would split the prize money. I posted my competition rules on Facebook, and to my surprise, not just three or four, but twenty-one friends committed to the competition we named Girls Getting Fit. These friends, from all different seasons of my life, bonded and cheered for one other with each pound lost, each goal reached and each new pair of fitting skinny pants. We supported each other through moments of failure, pulled muscles, job changes, deaths in the family, and cancer treatments. We lost weight through good old-fashioned hard work, one small change at a time, and we had fun doing it together. The eight women who persevered to the end lost a combined total of 165 pounds, an average of over 20 pounds per person. Lynn, my friend battling cancer, was the winner of the most accumulated points. After incorporating exercise and healthy eating into her life, her recovery after radiation treatments went from three weeks to ten days, amazing her doctors who suburban family | subfam.com

had been encouraging her for a long time to get healthy. Rachel, the winner of the highest percentage of weight loss, lost almost 17% of her weight and went on to run two 5Ks. Lori’s ratio between “bad” and “good” cholesterol improved dramatically, and after three years of being on antidepressants, Deanne was able to wean off medication. I may not have been the Biggest Loser, but at the end of those 15 weeks, I had lost 23 pounds and more than two dress sizes. I learned to eat smaller portions and to view food as fuel instead of something with which to stuff my stomach when I’m bored or stressed. My husband and I discovered a love for kettlebells which somehow helped eliminate the back pain I had long experienced, and our family became more active, taking hikes on Saturdays and joining the YMCA to work out and swim. My weight loss and healthy lifestyle rebirthed self-confidence and a sense of beauty in me that had been missing for many years. The healthy habits I learned and the support of my Girls Getting Fit friends played an important role in my emotional healing, too. I know I’m not the only mom who has let her health take a back seat during the early years of parenting. Maybe you’ve struggled with making healthy food choices or fitting exercise into your busy life, and you feel like you’ll never be in shape. Why not make a small change towards a healthier you or better yet, start your own competition like Girls Getting Fit? It might just be one of the best decisions you ever make, for you and your family. September/October 2018
