You hit a beautiful shot but somehow the leaf monster eats your ball and you have no clue where it went. It’s time to break out those high visibility balls. So get as many rounds in this fall as you can and hope your scores continue to go lower by next year.

Here’s a short game tip to save strokes. Know when and when NOT to use your lofted clubs. Golfers have a tendency to automatically pull out their high lofted sand wedge or lob wedge on all short

shots, even when high loft is not necessary. They try to fly the ball all the way and fall short in their effort to settle the ball next to the flagstick. However, when you have green to work with and a relatively level path to the hole a “pitch & run” method can be more effective. Chose a 9-iron or pitching wedge, set up to the ball with a square or slightly open stance, grip down on the handle with modest tension and keep your hands slightly ahead of the golf ball. With most of your weight on your front foot, use a pendulum putting stroke and strike down through the base of the ball. Instead of flying all the way to the hole, try to hit the ball half-way to the hole and allow the ball run out to the flagstick. Hopefully your ball has rolled to within 3 feet of the flagstick for a par saving tap in. Practice pitch and run chipping to save strokes.

the festivities. When organizing a small Halloween gathering with those in your safety bubble, you should take the following precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19 among guests: • Always check local guidelines before planning your event. • Brief guests about precautions before the event starts; during the event, remind guests of these precautions and ensure they are followed. • Choose outdoor venues over indoor spaces – if indoors, ensure the area is well-ventilated. • Minimize crowding by staggering arrivals and departures, numbering entries, designating seats/places and marking the floor to ensure physical distancing between people. • Provide all necessary supplies – hand hygiene stations, hand sanitizer or soap and water, tissues, closed-lid bins, distance markers, masks.

P

laying youth sports is a great way for children to be active and learn important socialization skills. You can take a number of steps to help lower the risk of COVID-19 exposure and reduce the spread while playing sports.

Wear a mask if feasible, especially when it is difficult to stay less than 6 feet apart from other people or indoors, for example in close contact sports such as basketball. The more people a participant interacts with, the closer the physical interaction, the more sharing of equipment there is by multiple players, and the longer the interaction, the higher the risk of COVID-19 spread. Therefore, risk of COVID-19 spread can be different, depending on the type of activity..

• Stay home if sick. • Players should bring their own equipment, like gloves and bats, if possible. • Reduce physical closeness and keep 6 feet of space between players when possible. • Wear a mask if possible. • Players should clean their hands before and after practices, games, and sharing equipment. • Tell a coach or staff member if you don’t feel well. • Limit nonessential visitors, spectators, and volunteers. Ensure they wear masks and maintain social distancing. • Check the league’s COVID-19 prevention practices before you go to make sure they have steps in place to prevent the spread of the virus.

The Power of Hands-On Activity for Childhood Development

education central

By Carmen Viktoria Gamper

C

hildren’s unstructured playtime is beneficial beyond simply keeping them occupied. In fact, an extensive body of research confirms that spontaneous play is extremely beneficial for healthy child development. The skills children learn on their own during free play are essential building blocks of their intellectual skill set, emotional wellbeing and mental health.

remains in a child’s long-term memory. It becomes a reference point that helps with all abstract thinking and theoretical investigations, and allows for the development of increasingly complex hands-on skills and coordination. Fundamental lessons imparted in preschool and elementary school can be taught with hands-on learning materials in playful ways. For example, math taught

using a traditional approach with rote memorization of isolated, abstract concepts often leaves students baffled. Math seems to have nothing to do with children’s vibrant and colorful reality. But when children learn mathematical concepts using practical experiences, such as working out fractions by slicing a pizza or an apple into halves, quarters and eighths, they develop deep, authentic understanding of the concept. Later, when they solve fraction problems on paper,

Seemingly basic activities such as building a block tower, seeing what sinks and floats in water, or tinkering with paper and tape to craft a paper airplane all offer children the opportunity to become eager and competent learners. Such simple hands-on activities hone vital skills, including focusing on a chosen topic (a critical skill if lacking, often misdiagnosed as ADD), problem-solving and planning next steps, developing a strategy, estimating and anticipating results, reevaluating assumptions and learning without fear of making mistakes. Children’s playful approaches to learning harbor abilities that contribute to a successful school experience and adult life. Most of all, hands-on learning offers children opportunities to practice their innate ability to experience that optimal state of learning, called “flow.” Achieving a flow state involves entering a deep, relaxed and focused engagement with their hands-on activity. In flow, they shape each next step as it spontaneously unfolds. In this state, children (and adults, too) stretch their abilities at a pace that aligns with their own intuition. By independently calling the shots for each step, learning becomes a personal and fulfilling activity that makes them more astute and resourceful, shaping their identity as lifelong, competent learners.

A licensed intergenerational child care center, on the campus of Lutheran Home in Arlington Heights, offers your child a total program for the mind, body, and spirit.

math becomes what it’s meant to be: a language for what they know firsthand. Now, during the COVID-19 pandemic, many parents are forced to support and educate their children at home. The suggestions below will ease some of the pressure to educate children in traditional ways and will reduce tensions between parent and child. Know that it’s okay on some days to let go of a structured curriculum and screen-based or teacher-guided lessons. By softening your teaching approach and inviting free spontaneous play and hands-on learning, you allow your child’s innate learning skills to surface. Spontaneous hands-on play will empower children in the long run. They will discover how to learn independently and to practice learning in a flow state. To strengthen their self-motivation, self-discipline and innate learning skills, prepare hands-on learning spaces where your children can be in command of their activities.

HERE ARE SOME SUGGESTIONS: 1. Prepare a worktable. Place a child-sized table and chair in a central spot in your home (preferably close to where you work, as children like to be near a parent). Provide a number of crafts materials -paper in various colors and shapes, tape, childproof scissors, crayons, thread, buttons, bottle caps, stick-

ers, and other supplies -- in small boxes and trays. You can offer some examples of creations to make from books or magazines, or make something together initially with your child, such as a paper roll pencil holder or a cork and cardboard ship. Then, let your child take the lead and create at the table. If a little encouragement is needed, offer suggestions: “Can you make something that moves in the wind?” or “Can you make a gift for grandma?” 2. Provide a simple water play space indoors or outdoors. You can purchase a water play table, or put one or two big buckets side by side -- either on a plastic sheet, in the bathtub or shower, or outdoors in the yard. Add some measuring containers, funnels, tubes, watercolors, and objects that sink and float, and let your child experiment. 3. Offer a cozy area for pretend play. Create spaces where children can pretend and line it with puppets, stuffed animals, dolls, dollhouses, toy cars, and the like. Provide accessories that let them act out scenes from a movie, a visit to the doctor’s office or a playground. Pretend scenarios help children process what they experience, see on the screen, dream or imagine. Children make sense of the world and reduce anxiety by placing their experiences into a personal context during their free play. As you prepare hands-on play and learning places, make sure to set your child up for success and independence

by adding everything that might be needed for an activity, including towels, a water bottle and snacks. Once your child grows accustomed to playing independently, you can let go of being a constant entertainer or teacher. This, in turn, allows you more independence and reduces tension in the home. You may also be surprised by your child’s ingenuity, creativity and rich imagination. Carmen Viktoria Gamper has worked internationally as an educator, advisor, coach and speaker for child-centered education. As founder of the New Learning Culture program, she supports parents, homeschooling families and schools in safely offering child-directed, flow-rich learning environments. Is it possible to have a worry-free pandemic? After all, there seem to be endless things to worry about—from our own survival and well-being, to that of our loved ones, to the overall trajectory of the global economy. But according to Karen McGregor, not only does all this worry come at a high cost to our health, it’s a symptom of a bigger problem. “First, worrying drastically suppresses your immune system,” says McGregor, author of The Tao of Influence: Ancient Wisdom for Modern Leaders and Entrepreneurs (Mango, September 2020, $24.95) and an international keynote and TEDx speaker. “You could eat the world’s cleanest diet, but if you worry all the time, you’re basically saying, ‘No, thanks, organic veggies and fruit—I’m choosing the greasy burger joint down the street.’ That’s what the stress of worry does to our bodies. “But also, worry is just another word for fear, and fear keeps us from being fully present,” she adds.“When we’re not fully present, we’re disconnected from our primal power, which is love power, and that means we can’t be our healthiest and happiest selves and have a positive influence on those around us.” Her book lays out a path—rooted in the ancient wisdom of the 4,000-year-old Tao Te Ching—for identifying and breaking the “power patterns” that undermine your influence, create dysfunctional relationships, and otherwise squelch your potential. Read it and you’ll note that fear (a.k.a. worry) plays a role in virtually all of these power patterns. The bottom line: Even right now—especially right now—we need to break the bonds of worry and create a healthier, happier life. (Consider it your pandemic project.) Here’s how. First, understand why worry happens. “Worry is a mechanism of the mind that is designed to keep you exactly where you are,” says McGregor. “By mulling over a situation without a solution, you are not changing and not acting. This is the mind’s nature; its job is to keep you safe from perceived harm. While that can serve its purpose if we are in imminent danger, the reality is that it blocks us from creativity, productivity, and following our dreams. “Over your lifetime, your mind has created patterns to keep you safe,” says McGregor. “These patterns have been with you for so long that they are automatic. Do you ever notice yourself automatically saying to people the same response when asked a question like ‘how are you?’ This is what your mind does. It is on an automatic worry ‘channel.’ The good news is you can break these patterns and change the channel.” Tune into the channel you’ve been listening to (probably for years)…Pay attention to your thoughts and feelings and see if you 22 family wellness

start to notice a pattern. At the heart of your worrying could be “blame” or “judgment.” It could be your need to be right or your need to be a victim to your circumstance by repeating the same story of injustice to anyone who will listen. It could be your need to withdraw from others and say, “No way, I know better” and live out a pattern of withdrawal and entitlement in which the world owes you something. …then, dismantle your channel. You can do this simply by becoming more and more aware of how you worry. Does your Victim power pattern take hold so that you say things like, “I can’t recover from these losses”? Or do you pull away from everyone (a sign of the Withdrawer power pattern) and then say,“I’m in this alone; I have no support”? “When you are aware of the channel you are listening to, you can watch your worries simply float on down the river of thoughts,” says McGregor.“You don’t have to hook into them. You can observe your thoughts joining millions of other fearful thoughts that are swimming around the globe every single minute. When you observe, you’re not worrying.” Focus on solutions. Each time you become aware of a worry-filled thought, ask yourself, So, what am I going to do about it? You can stay helpless by feeling overpowered by worry or you can take action. At the very least, your action will help you feel less helpless, and at best it can help you shift into a healthier state of mind. “An action-oriented solution may be to sew homemade masks to mail to friends and family,” notes McGregor. “It may be to sign up for an online class that makes you more marketable after the pandemic ends. Or it might just be to go for a midday walk to get some fresh air and sunshine, or to turn on some festive music and cook a beautiful meal for your family.” Create a new language. Language is powerful, whether we are saying those words out loud to others or simply thinking them to ourselves. Replace your go-to “worry words” with words that empower and generate passion and enthusiasm. Remember, says McGregor, you are always influencing yourself and others, so get serious about using empowering, positive language. Instead of saying, “I can’t recover from these losses,” replace those words with, “I am creative and have the support I need to learn how to earn more than enough income.” Rather than, “I am so busy I can’t keep up,” say, “My life is wonderfully full as I serve the world with my purpose.” “Worrying doesn’t fix what’s going on in the world; it only hurts you,” says McGregor. “We’re all facing challenges due to the pandemic, but we don’t have to let worry make them worse. Be gentle with yourself and start making healthier choices. You’ll immediately notice a shift in your outlook. That’s true now, and it will be true long after the pandemic is over.”

ith many families stuck at home juggling working remotely, homeschooling and trying to keep everyone happy and healthy, it can be easy to let an otherwise active lifestyle fall by the wayside.

Although prioritizing activity in a quarantined environment might be one of the last things on your mind, parents who model healthy behaviors can inspire their kids to do the same.

new trails or rougher terrain to explore nature while getting active. While your annual family vacation might’ve been canceled, there are likely hidden trails within a short drive from home.

When you sweat during family activities, don’t forget to stay hydrated. An option like Propel Flavored Electrolyte Water can help parents replace electrolytes lost in sweat. With zero calories, no sugar, and nine fruit flavors, it can help keep you hydrated and moving at home or outdoors.

Regardless of age, being physically active provides numerous health benefits. The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity for adults each week, and 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity for kids between the ages of 6-17 each day. Finding ways to move daily can help everyone in the family maintain their health – and prevent them from going stir crazy.

Consider these tips to keep the whole family motivated and moving – you might be surprised to find that exercise can be fun.

Take a virtual class. Many fitness instructors and gyms are sharing free classes online designed for the whole family. Simply connect a streaming device to your television and search for virtual classes that are geared toward getting families moving, regardless of fitness level. Fitness instructors and studios are also sharing a variety of workouts – from family yoga to dance cardio in various time increments – on social media that you can find by searching various fitness-related hashtags.

Go for a walk or bike ride. Incorporating walks or bike rides into your family’s daily routine can help get everyone moving as well as create quality bonding time. If your family is more on the adventurous side, consider venturing outside your neighborhood to find

Build your own obstacle course. Set out hoops, pillows, rope, ladders, cardboard boxes and other items you find around the house to create a fun and challenging obstacle course either indoors or out. This can be easily adapted to varying levels of difficulty to meet each family member’s level. Don’t forget a stopwatch to see who can complete the course the quickest.

Play a family game. Playing games together is an old-fashioned way to get the whole family moving and having fun. An activity as simple as tag or racing around the house, or even a game that requires some equipment such as soccer or basketball, can get everyone’s heart rate up. You can even create a fitness deck or activity dice to turn working out into a fun game.
