Send the kids out to gather dozens of freshly fallen autumn leaves while you pull out the craft supplies. In a couple of days, your leaves will be prepped to retain their color and shape, and you will be amazed with all the ways you can use them to transform your home for fall.

Do this step first! Choose your project or projects below, and gather more leaves fall leaves at their peak than you think you need. Allow one - two days before you begin any crafts. Snip stems and spread leaves in thin layers between sheets of plain white paper. Then add another layer of leaves on top of the paper and keep building your pile up until you have sandwiched all the leaves between sheets of paper. Cover your stack with several heavy books to press them as flat as possible. Let your stack sit for 24 - 48 hours to flatten before coloring fades. Do not press longer than two days.Then your leaves are ready for crafting!

Bask in the autumnal glow of leaf-light! You need: Mason Jars (or any old jars) with lids (if Mason Jars),Variety of pressed fall leaves (above), Mod Podge Glossy, Foam paint brushes, Battery-operated tea lights, and Glitter (optional). Cover one side of clean, dry jar with Mod Podge and apply one leaf at a time, overlaying each leaf slightly, coating each with a thin layer of glue as you go. Once the sides of the jar are covered, sprinkle sides lightly with glitter in a complimentary color like gold or copper. Let lanterns dry upside down for an hour. For Mason Jars, attach jar rim without can seal and insert tea light. These look great on a mantel or hutch. Kids may like to have them in their bedrooms. suburban family | subfam.com

Everyone deserves to wear this crown! You need: Brown paper grocery bags,Variety of pressed fall leaves (above), Modpodge Glossy, Foam paint brushes, Parchment paper, Wide double-sided tape, Scotch tape,Tacky glue. Step one: Coat one side of each pressed leaf in Mod Podge. Let dry on parchment paper for a half hour. Then coat the other side and let dry for another half hour. Step two: Open grocery bags and cut into 3 - 4 inch x 28 inch strips. Fit each paper strip to wearer’s head, so it sits just above ears, but don’t close the loop yet. Apply double-sided tape to the center of the strip, leaving a bit of brown paper edge on the top and bottom. Lay flat and apply coated leaves pointing up, down, sideways or a combination of directions. If you need more sticking power, add a dab of Tacky Glue.When your crown is decorated, use more double sided tape to secure the crown base end-to-end. If extra securing is needed, use a piece of scotch tape on the inside of crown.

Your plates will look stunning haloed with real leaves! You need: Painter’s tape, Parchment paper, Variety of pressed fall leaves (above), Mod Podge Outdoor, Foam paint brushes. Cut parchment paper larger than the size of mats you wish to make. You can make mats round to peek out underneath plates or square or rectangle – it’s up to you. Secure parchment paper onto a large table where project can sit undisturbed for several hours. September/October 2021

Use a thin permanent marker to sketch out the shape you desire. Coat just beyond that shape with a thick layer of Mod Podge. Start laying leaves face-down in a burst pattern, starting on the inside of your shape and working layers out, coating the other side completely in Mod Podge as you go. Try similar shapes of leaves in different colors or alternate rings of different varieties. When you are satisfied with your design, cover the mat with another piece of parchment and lay a large, heavy book on top for two hours. Peel off the top parchment and let the top of the mat dry for an hour before flipping over and removing the other piece of parchment. Allow adequate drying time, then store mats in fresh parchment until use.

A lot less mess than carving pumpkins! You need: Spray adhesive, Mod Podge Outdoor, Foam paint brushes, Variety of pressed fall leaves (above), Pumpkins (real or artificial). Divide your leaves by type and size and create a pattern on the table that you like. You can create a ring around your pumpkin or spread the leaves out all over. Play around and have fun creating different looks. Once you are ready, spray mount adhesive on the back of leaves and smooth them onto a clean, dry pumpkin. Finish your look and then coat

entire pumpkin with thin coat of Mod Podge, allowing 30 minutes to dry. Repeat with another coat. Real pumpkins should last the season outdoors. Artificial pumpkins may last for several seasons indoors.

Make your front door the envy of the neighborhood! You need: Large cardboard shipping box, Mod Podge Outdoor, Foam paint brushes, Variety of pressed fall leaves (above), Masking tape, Ribbon. Flatten your box, and then outline and cut out a large cardboard letter that represents your family’s last name. Hold it up against your door to gauge accurate size. Trim to fit. Seal the open edges of your letter with pieces of masking tape to protect form from moisture. Coat all sides of the letter in Mod Podge and allow to dry 30 minutes on each side. Lay your letter face-up and arrange with leaves until you have a design you admire. Coat front and sides of letter with Mod Podge, press on leaves and add another coat to the front of leaves. Dry 30 minutes.Add one more coat of Mod Podge and dry again. Embellish top of letter with ribbon, if desired. Use mounting squares to hang finished monogram on front door.

Decorate a mantel, doorway or hutch with a colorful strand of peak fall leaves! You’ll need: Paper straws, Jute twine, Mod Podge (Matte, Satin or Gloss), Variety of pressed fall leaves (above), Scotch tape. Step one: Measure the space you want your garland to cover. Then mark that length on a clean floor and spread out your flattened leaves plus quite a few extras in a pattern you admire. Step two: Coat one side of each pressed leaf in Mod Podge in matte or gloss depending on which type of finish you prefer. Let dry on parchment paper for 30 minutes. Then coat the other side and let dry for another 30 minutes. Step three: Cut straws into three-quarter inch pieces, tape onto back of downward pointing leaf, near the stem, and then lay them on a clean floor, leaf-side down until you have the arrangement you want. Allow for a couple extra feet of twine on each end. String your twine through each straw and tie each end where you would like your garland to hang. Move leaves along the twine until you have the arrangement you like.You can scotch tape the leaves in the back to eachother if necessary, once the garland is hung. Storage Tip: When storing until next year, wrap your leaf crafts in layers of parchment paper and then loose tissue. If you protect crafts from being crushed, chances are good they will last for several years. 8 out & about

Choice of club can vary anywhere from a five-iron for a shot across the green all the way to a sand wedge, dependent on the length the ball needs to run. I often use the seven-iron for longer chips…the pitching wedge if the hole is closer. You certainly want to pick a club that allows you to land the ball on the green…not in the fringe. The stroke is fairly short…just enough to get the ball on the green and rolling. You should experiment with different clubs to get a good feel. Play 20 out & about

On chip and pitch shots, many golfers make the mistake of trying to help the ball into the air by “scooping” it off the turf. When scooping, September/October 2021

golfers allow weight to hang back which causes the club to approach the ball on a path that is either too steep or too shallow. To avoid bladed or chunked shots, practice hitting chips and pitches with your weight “parked” on your front leg. As a practice drill, put 100 percent of your weight on your front leg and keep it there from setup through the finish of your swing.To make sure you’re doing so, set up and swing with your back foot off the ground, using only the toes on your back foot for balance. This will force you to keep your weight forward, letting the club swing down into the ball at the appropriate angle, which helps the ball pop off the turf. They heatedly discuss the known facts of the case; and little by little the personalities, opinions, and biases of each juror become evident. re you looking for some fun new ways to celebrate Halloween with your kids this year? How about a neighborhood contest? Costume contests are just one of the many options to get everyone in the spirit. So read on to see if one of these wicked ideas grabs you. Craziest costume – Pass out fliers inviting all the neighborhood kids to meet at your house an hour before trick-or-treating begins. Give everyone a name tag when they arrive. Then each child and adult can fill out a voting slip. Include best costume, scariest, funniest, most creative, and more. Hand out a special prize to the winners of each category. And don’t forget a small consolation prize for all children who participate. Most ghoulish yard – Invite everyone in the neighborhood to join in a decorating contest.You could have a few categories, such as scariest, cutest, silliest, and best overall. Set a decorating deadline for October 21st. Provide delivery instructions on the flier so every house in the neighborhood can vote for the addresses they like best. Also, mention that neighbors should view all the homes after October 21st and deliver their votes to you by a specified date. Ask some of the participating neighbors to help you make up fun ‘Scariest House’ and other signs. Then post them in the yards of the winning homes. Funniest carved pumpkin – Ask the neighborhood to join you in a carved pumpkin contest. You can schedule a date and time when everyone will meet with their pumpkins at your home or a neighborhood park. Suggest everyone who participates pitch in $2 per pumpkin for a jackpot. To keep it fair, allow only one pumpkin per child. Prepare numbered cards in advance so each pumpkin will have its own number. Then have everyone fill out a voting slip. The carver of the winning pumpkin gets the jackpot. You could also pass out small goody bags for all the kids who participate. September/October 2021

Funnest Halloween game – Hand out fliers to everyone in the neighborhood or on your street to hold a Halloween game day. Ask each participating house to set up a Halloween kids game in their front yard. Participating homes can give out small prizes such as stickers or treats to each kid who plays their game. Kids can wander the neighborhood playing the games for the afternoon. When they’re done, have each child fill out a ballot for the most fun Halloween game. Then post a chilling homemade sign in the yard of the winner. Scariest scarecrow – Ask your neighbors to participate in the scariest scarecrow contest. To keep the scarecrows safe until voting, set a specific day when the scarecrows should

be displayed in everyone’s yards. Have everyone in the neighborhood, whether they participate by making a scarecrow or not, handdeliver their vote to you by the end of the day that the scarecrows are set out. Then deliver a fun Halloweenish homemade yard sign to the winning home. Creepiest food – Hold a simple neighborhood potluck Halloween party. Each participating family should be instructed to bring a Halloween themed food or dessert. Place a numbered card next to each dish. Then have everyone fill out a ballot for the cutest, grossest, funniest, and scariest food. Once the winners are announced, take photos of the families next to their creepy food. Then everyone can dig in and eat the yummy dishes and treats.

aising children in an educationfriendly home can help create lifelong problem solvers. When children are encouraged to ask questions, experiment with their ideas, and explain their thought process, they develop skills that will help them excel in life in general, but especially in subjects such as science and math – ones that rely heavily on strong problem-solving skills.

1.) Expose them to role models

The good news is that even if you’re not a whiz at math or science (yet!) you can still help boost your child’s confidence and empower them to return to school with new knowledge and excitement about exploring the world around them.

Exposing your child to the powerful role models of the world through books, movies, television shows, etc. can help them gain confidence and inspire their own journey. By being able to picture themself accomplishing the same amazing things, they’ll feel powerful and inspired to put themselves out there and try new things. Wonder and solve problems together Be curious together. It doesn’t matter how much you do or don’t know about science or math –learn together. If there’s a question or problem they’re stuck on, look it up together; or encourage them to research a topic they’re wondering about then have them come tell you about it. They’ll absorb your sense of wonder and desire to learn and likely come to internalize it as their own. They’ll also be empowered to search for answers to their questions instead of having them spoon-fed to them. This will help them not only at home but also in the classroom. With the confidence to ask questions and let their teacher know when they need help, they’ll be able to better understand subjects that they didn’t feel too confident about before. 3.) Do educational activities together The best way for children to learn is by doing hands-on activities. Intentional adult-children interactions can help extend this learning, so finding way to enjoy education can make a huge difference in their confidence levels. For science especially, there are amazing resources to help facilitate these interactions and make learning a positive experience. • Visit your local science museum! You can use this directory to search for science museums in your area. • There are so many free online resources such as Yellow Scope’s blog page, which describe experiments you can do at home with supplies you probably have in your cupboard. This is a great family activity for a rainy day or during summer when kids are looking for something fun to do with friends. Set them up in the backyard and let them experiment!

• Purchase science, math, engineering kits then set aside family time to work on them together! Embody a growth mindset According to Stanford researcher Carol Dweck, how students perceive their abilities has a big impact on their motivation and achievement. Students with a “fixed” mindset believe intelligence and abilities are “fixed” or unchangeable, whereas those with a “growth” mindset believe these traits can be developed. Students with a fixed mindset are more likely to shy away from challenges and asking questions for fear of not looking smart. By contrast, those with a growth mindset tend to ask more questions and seek out challenges - seeing them as opportunities for growth and development. In fact, in study after study, students who learned to embody a growth mindset performed better when challenging material was presented; they also earned higher grades and took more challenging classes! Here are some phrases that adults can use to can help encourage a growth mindset:

“When you learn how to do a new kind of math problem, it grows your math brain.” “That feeling of science being hard is your science brain growing.” If possible, try to avoid suggestions that students (or you!) aren’t good at specific subjects like: “I can’t do math.” “That’s okay, maybe science isn’t one of your strengths.” Note: If you slip (as we all sometimes do!) and accidentally find yourself using one of these phrases, simply add “yet” to the end.) When they make a mistake, help them think of it as a great learning opportunity. 5.) Give them time to explore and think on their own. Children learn science best when they experiment, make mistakes, make observations, re-try the experiments, and then think about what’s happening. This process can take time. Give them the time and space to explore and discover on their own before jumping in with the “correct” answers. Providing support while they’re struggling with a question, problem, or idea can let them know you’re there for encouragement, but still allows them to problem-solve and get the answer themselves.

nyone who’s seen kids on a playground knows that most are naturally physically active and love to move around. But what might not be apparent is that climbing to the top of a slide or swinging from the monkey bars can help lead kids to a lifetime of being active.

As they get older, it can be a challenge for kids to get enough daily activity.This can be due to: • Increasing demands at school • A feeling among some kids that they aren’t good at sports • A lack of active role models • Busy working families And even if kids have the time and the desire to be active, parents may not feel comfortable letting them freely roam the neighborhood as kids did generations ago. So their opportunities to be active might be limited. In spite of these barriers, parents can teach a love of physical activity and help kids fit it into their everyday lives. Doing so can set healthy patterns that will last into adulthood.

With mild ailments like the common cold having symptoms similar to the much more serious Covid-19 virus, parents are left wondering how to distinguish between the two.

Contributing to the challenge is the fact that in young children Covid-19 virus often presents itself via mild, allergy-like symptoms that can be virtually indistinguishable from the common cold. The good news is that if a child does have mild symptoms, then the course of the disease itself is likely to be mild. Those around the child may need to take more precautions, but the children themselves should recover just fine. There are a few ways to distinguish between a cold and Covid-19. Symptoms of the common cold would resemble allergy-like symptoms and should generally be pretty mild.These include: • Runny nose • Congestion • Sore Throat • Mild Cough • Fatigue These symptoms of the common cold can also overlap with Covid-19, however fever is a hallmark symptom of Covid-19 that you typically wouldn’t see with a common cold. Children can get a low grade fever from a common cold, but higher fevers about 101 degrees Fahrenheit should always prompt further investigation. In addition to fever, Covid-19 also often

presents itself through symptoms such as shortness of breath, severe fatigue, muscle aches/pains, nausea, diarrhea. It can also much more commonly cause loss of sense of taste and smell. One thing to look for that points to Covid-19, aside from physical symptoms in the child, is clustering in families. If everyone in the family all of a sudden has a clustering of new onset of allergy/cold like symptoms, it very well could be Covid-19. This is especially true if adults in the family develop a high fever while the child has symptoms.That should prompt immediate investigation and testing into the possibility of Covid-19 among all family members. Fever in children can occur with a normal cold, but it should be low grade and short-lived. If one child has a very mild illness with a runny nose, congestion and symptoms typical of a common cold, no exposure to Covid-19, and no one else in the family is sick, testing is generally not needed. They should be kept home from school or day care until they are asymptomatic. A common cold should improve in 2-3 days. If this occurs and the child is symptom-free, they should be okay to return to school or daycare without testing. If the symptoms last longer, fever develops, or other family members get sick then everyone should be tested for Covid-19 and follow doctor recommendations from that point.
