Family Survival Guide to the Suburbs

Dr. Purnendu Gupta leads the hospital program for the treatment of infantile, juvenile and adolescent scoliosis. Clinic visits provide teaching moments to educate patients on their condition, and discuss their progress.

Shriners Hospitals for Children — Chicago, offers a premier pediatric orthopaedic service for a range of neuromusculoskeletal conditions, including those related to complications of the upper and lower limbs, hand, foot, joints and spine. Every day, our care provides healing to meet the hopes of children and their parents, and offer life-changing results. Those hopes are met in our other areas of expertise as well. For over 90 years, families with children in need of plastic surgery, cleft lip and palate repair, spinal cord injury care, and physical rehabilitation have seen their hopes realized right under our roof — by physicians, nurses, and specialists using the latest technology, innovative research, and a collaborative, family-centered approach. It’s how the 22 Shriners Hospital locations provided care to over 121,000 children last year alone.

Bonding Time: 10 Easy Ways To Keep Your Family Together

L

ife is busy, especially so at the fall season. So make sure you slow things down on a regular basis and just enjoy being a family. As kids grow up, everyone can seem pulled in utterly different directions. You may even find yourself thinking that you liked your kids better before they had the ability to leave you at will. But never fear. Here are ten remedies that will keep your relations relating even while everyone evolves along individual lines: Create a family alter. Use a large hutch, buffet, or fireplace mantel as the main display area for a well-blended family. Find words that describe your family values or blocks with sweet sayings on them. Add photos of each person that show their personality. Ask each member to contribute one or two personal items that may seem quirky separately but when combined together perfectly capture the spirit of your clan. Eat dinner together. When my daughter was little, she wrote us a note of protest after one night when we did not all sit down to dinner together. It said, quite simply,“We hav to eat togther.” Today, when I’m tempted to skip a formal sit-down dinner due to busy schedules, I remember her note and set the table anyway or ask her to do it. If she complains, I simply quote her back to herself. 6 seasons

By Christina Katz Play games. Sunday afternoons are just as perfect for game night as they ever were. But if you are having trouble gathering your kids to all be home at the same time, you might need to make family game night a mandatory family event. Sure, you’ll hear some reluctant grumbling before the games begin. But once you settle in and start having fun, you’ll be so glad you insisted—and so will your kids. Create a shared workspace. Surely you have a space in your home that is underutilized. Be it the dining room, the laundry room or an extra bedroom, it’s easy to convert this space into a shared work space where the whole family can convene instead of scattering to every corner. Simply add a large folding table, ample places to dock and charge electronics, office supplies, a printer and voila! This instant family office is a great place to have your family meetings or collaborate on projects. Put music on while you do the dishes or chores. You have seen The Big Chill, right? Then surely you remember the dish-washing scene. You can either be the type of family that says quit-yourgrousing-and-do-your-chores, which makes everyone sullen and pokey. Or you can be the type of family that makes chores fun and silly. Sometimes the difference is as simple as turning on the radio to a station that plays oldies. Take a family walk. Grab the dogs, the leashes, and a couple of water bottles and get the heck out of dodge. Go just go far enough away from home to walk without interruption from friendly neighbors and just stroll. Don’t bring up any difficult topics, don’t confront anyone about unacsuburban family | subfam.com

ceptable behavior, just take your family for a walk and leave your collective worries in the dust. Treat everyone to dinner. Let this be a surprise even if it’s just the local burger or teriyaki joint. If you plan dinner out in advance, don’t tell everyone until you have a consensus—it was an awful, terrible, rotten day. Then do you best imitation of the Dad in A Christmas Story when he says, “All right, get dressed. We are going out to eat!” And watch those frowns turn upside down. Celebrate the small stuff. Don’t wait for birthdays and anniversaries to celebrate each other. Try to recognize one person in the family every week. When it’s a big enough deal, head out for ice cream or bring home bakery cupcakes. And don’t forget, you can stick a birthday candle in just about anything. Have an end-of-day ritual. Our family enjoys reading a book from a series out loud before bed. But make yours whatever your family finds relaxing and enjoyable, so everyone can drift off to sleep with a smile. Whether it’s a quick game of “Highs & Lows,” sharing a story from the day, or just tucking in and kissing goodnight, end on a consistent happy note no matter what the day was like. Have a do-nothing day of rest. Stay in your jammies until noon on a Sunday morning. Cook a big messy breakfast. Grab the paper and some doughnuts or bagels. Watch a movie in the middle of the day with fresh popcorn. Don’t bother cleaning up until the eleventh hour. Just enjoy the splendid imperfection of being the family you are right now, happy and relaxing together. September/October 2017

At some point, however, children reach an age when trick-or-treating can feel juvenile. Moms and dads, accustomed to the yearly ritual of costuming their miniature ghosts and goblins, need not be spooked. Dr. Pam Vincent, a psychology professor at Ashford University, offers insights on understanding children's motivations and parenting tips for transitioning tweens to a more grown-up Halloween. According to Vincent, children usually begin resisting Halloween traditions, especially trick-or-treating, around age 12. 26 out & about

Although they aren't yet full-fledged teenagers, even middle-schoolers may experience what is known as ‘adolescent egocentrism,’ which is a heightened self-consciousness, leading them to assume that everyone else is asSUBFAM worried about their 12.16:Layout appearance and1behavFILL small 12/14/16 iors as they are.

“A must see!”

“They often feel as though they are on an imaginary stage and that everyone thinks they may look silly in a costume or that they are (gasp!) hanging out with their parents and younger siblings,” said Dr. Vincent. “To go out suburban family | subfam.com

in public – door-to-door – and invite people to look at them can be mortifying at this age.” The fight for independence from their parents’ rules and routines is another reason tweens want to stop trick-or-treating. "While 11:47 AM Page 1 they still require parental supervision, they are also more self-aware and begin to realize they can make some of their own decisions," Dr. Vincent said. "They're ready to test their limits to see how far their parents will let them go." She offers these tips on what to do:

1. Communicate

It’s essential to communicate with the child and acknowledge their reasons for not wanting to participate. If going door-to-door isn’t a big deal for the family unit, let it go and have the child help in handing out candy to others.

2. Reward Good Behavior

If there are younger siblings who still want to trick-or-treat and parents aren't comfortable leaving the older child at home alone, or if there is an event that the whole family is exSeptember/October 2017

pected to attend, parents should allow their tween as much independence as possible in choosing a costume and acknowledge their cooperation and participation.

3. Other Options

There are plenty of ways older children and pre-teens can get into the Halloween spirit without going door-to-door. If none of their friends have a supervised party planned, families may wish to throw their own! Otherwise, age appropriate events are oftentimes sponsored by a local library, community center or church youth group.

4. A Sweet Alternative

If all else fails, put tweens in charge of candy duty. Even if they don't want to open the door, perhaps they'll be willing to make sure the bowl is always fully stocked, all the while doing a little taste testing for themselves. Dr. Vincent notes that tweens are just beginning to form their identity, and it lacks the stability of an older teenager. Sure, they'll test their boundaries to see how far they can go, but it doesn't have to be a frightful experience for their parents. TIPS FOR A SMARTER AND SUCCESSFUL SCHOOL YEAR By Lara Krupicka

Shifting from the summer days of sleeping in and hanging out in the back yard to 6-hour days of school and homework can be jarring. But given a few strategies for organization with your kids and in your household, you’ll find everyone in your family working smarter.

Landing Pad “A place for everything and everything in its place,” is a smart mantra, particularly when it comes to school items. One of the most frequent causes of school day stress is not being able to find what they need when they’re getting ready in the morning. Prevent stress and keep the house neater by creating a “landing pad” - a spot where kids can stash their school gear. Then encourage them to empty and store lunch boxes and hang up back30 education central

Organizing Hacks

/subfam Get Daily Updates of Great Local Offerings for Everyone in the Family!

Homework Central Having a specific location for working on schoolwork sets your child up for success as well. A desk, computer nook or kitchen counter can function as a homework space. Just make sure you have supplies such as pens and pencils, rulers, erasers nearby to prevent exsuburban family | subfam.com

cuses for not getting at the work. A basket of supplies can easily be pulled out for homework 11:48 AM Page 1 and then tucked in a cupboard after it’s done.

Paper Chase Permission slips, calendars, reminders and teacher notes can accumulate at a rapid rate, especially early in the school year. Before it turns into an avalanche or you find yourself on an early morning paper chase for a form that’s due, set up a system for dealing with the influx. Fill out and return forms by the next day, whenever possible. Enter dates immediately on the calendar. File away other paperwork in a single folder or pin it to a bulletin board. Whatever your system, keep it simple and consistent. As British-Irish statesman Edmund Burke once said, “Good order is the foundation of all things.” Including a solid school year. September/October 2017

HELP YOUR CHILD SUCCEED IN SCHOOL There is no magic formula for school success, but there are plenty of things you can do to improve your child’s performance at school. Such as: 1. Keep a consistent bedtime for your child. Being well-rested enables kids to better focus in school. 2. Serve a healthy breakfast. A protein-rich breakfast, such as eggs, or cereal with milk will give your child fuel for his body and brain. 3. Initiate regular communication with her teacher. Let her know of any concerns you have or if there are any irregular circumstances at home. Ask for her feedback on how your child is doing. 4. Read regularly with your child. Not only does reading provide a good parent/child bonding time, it also encourages development of reading skills.

7. Ask open-ended questions about what your child is studying in school. Let him teach you. Passing along skills and information is a good way to reinforce what they’re learning.

EDUCATION RESOURCE

8. Buy them books. Buy yourself books. Children raised in a print-rich environment are shown to be more proficient readers, according to Educational Testing Service. 9. Praise growth rather than achievement. Psychologist and researcher Carol Dweck emphasizes a growth mindset that values learning for its own sake as a better predictor of success than “talent” or IQ. 10. When working with your child on homework, guide them in strategies for completing it without doing the work for them.

5. Take a look at her take-home folder or assignment notebook on occasion. Review deadlines and your child’s plan for meeting them.

11.Talk about current events as a family. Awareness of the world around them and thinking critically about what is happening make children better learners.

6. Encourage your child to explore deeper into topics that interest her. Learning is a lifelong skill and kids need to see that they can find enjoyment in it.

12. Get involved in your child’s school as you are able. Interacting with other parents can offer insights on what happens in your child’s school day.

Iron Rich Foods = Better Concentration + Sports Performance

M

By Sarah Yale

Iron Helps The Immune System

aking sure children get enough iron every day, throughout the day, will help them to concentrate in school so they will learn more. Low iron levels lead to memory loss, shortened attention span, tiredness, apathy and reduced performance. Long before iron deficiency shows up in a blood test, people have symptoms of low iron. Serve iron rich foods to your children daily to avoid low iron levels, which can lead to anemia.

Iron is necessary for the immune system to function properly to fend off colds, flu and other illnesses. The body needs iron to make hemoglobin to transport oxygen throughout the body via red blood cells to reach body tissues.

Be Aware

Tip

• Vegan diets can lead to low iron levels in the blood. • Girls can lose iron through heavy menstrual periods. • Kids ages 12-18 are susceptible to low iron due to their rapid growth and unpredictable eating habits.

Sports Athletic kids need more iron due to their increased levels of physical activity. Sore, achy muscles need iron to recover properly after sports and workouts. Low iron levels can result in decreased athletic performance, weakness, shortness of breath and lightheadedness. Ask your doctor how much iron your active child needs.

Bonus When kids eat an iron rich diet there is no need to take a mineral supplement. 32 family wellness

Delicious Snack Mix

Combine about a cup each of dried fruit, raisins, cereal, chocolate chips, and nuts or seeds. Divide into snack size portions and store in sandwich baggies. The kids will love it.

Heme and Non-Heme Iron Poultry, fish and meat contain heme iron. Heme iron is absorbed 2-3 times faster than non-heme iron which is found in plant based foods.

not absorbed fully by the body, so the amount absorbed will probably be less than the percentage indicated on the box.

Supplements The U.S. Department of Agriculture/U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Dietary Guidelines For Americans states that “nutrients should come primarily from foods. Foods in nutrient-dense, mostly intact forms contain not only the essential vitamins and minerals that are often contained in nutrient supplements, but also dietary fiber and other naturally occurring substances that may have positive health effects.” Children who consume enough dietary iron through food will not need to take iron supplements. You can ask a pediatrician to check your child’s iron level.

Heme Iron Foods

An easy way to increase absorption of iron from plant based foods, is to eat them along with foods that are high in vitamin C, or to drink orange juice with iron rich foods. Avoid drinking tea or coffee while consuming iron rich foods. Tea or coffee decreases iron absorption.

Choosing Iron Fortified Cereal

Getting Enough Iron Daily Is Easy

Iron percentage in cereal is calculated based on the nutritional needs of women of child bearing age. The U.S. recommended dietary allowance for women of child bearing age is 18 mg, which is too much iron for children and adolescents. Serving sizes vary with cereal brands and products. Be sure to read the serving size on the nutrition facts panel. You can give your child a smaller serving, or choose cereal that indicates on the nutrition facts panel, that it has 50-75% of the daily value of iron. Remember that cereal contains non-heme iron which is

The chart of the U.S. recommended dietary allowances (RDAs) for iron, established by the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, shows the daily iron allowance for each age group in milligrams (mg). The food lists indicate serving size and milligrams of iron per serving.

Choose iron rich foods from the U.S. Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) lists to add up to the iron RDA for your child’s age group. You will help your children do better in academics, on the playground, in the arts and in sports.

hen my teenaged daughter came off the soccer field at the end of a game complaining of a headache, I brushed it off. Even when she mentioned another player had hit her in the head during a scuffle for the ball. The blow had been mild enough not to disrupt play, so I gave her Ibuprophen and encouraged her to rest. When the headache persisted, I chalked it up to migraine tendencies.

Imagine my grief and guilt when four days later the school athletic trainer diagnosed her with a concussion. I couldn’t understand how I missed the signs. I’m not the first mom to be blindsided by a child’s concussion. Due to the myriad of myths surrounding this condition, it often takes parents by surprise. In fact, earlier this year the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) revealed that concussion remains the most underreported, under diagnosed head injury. To help you avoid mistaking or mistreating your child’s condition, should he suffer a bump to the head, I’ve unmasked six common concussion myths: Myth: You can tell right away when someone has a concussion. They’ll vomit and have a bad headache. Fact: Symptoms can take hours or even days to appear. And because each brain is different, reactions to the injury vary from child to child. (see sidebar for common symptoms) Symptoms also differ between boys and girls. A 2011 study in the Journal of Athletic Training found that both boys and girls report headaches after a concussion. But boys more suburban family | subfam.com

often experience amnesia and confusion or disorientation, while girls may describe themselves as being drowsy or sensitive to noise. Myth: You have to be knocked unconscious for it to be a concussion. Fact: According to the CNS, only about 10% of concussion-inducing blows cause the person to black out. And a concussion can occur even without a direct blow to the head. An impact to another part of the body, such as a hard fall, can sometimes jar the head enough to cause the brain to come in contact with the skull’s interior. It is this internal collision that causes the injury. Myth: Don’t let a concussed person fall asleep. Fact: We’ve long heard that you should rouse a person every few hours after they’ve experienced a hit to the head to prevent a coma. In reality, after suffering a concussion your child can (and should) be allowed to sleep. His brain requires rest to begin healing. However, it is a good idea to keep an eye on September/October 2017

SYMPTOMS OF CONCUSSION: • Dazed look

• Slurred speech

• Disorientation or confusion

• Dizziness

• Decreased balance, coordination or reaction time

• Headache

• Blurry or double vision

• Memory loss

• Sleep problems (too much or too little sleep)

• Nausea and or/ vomiting

• Sensitivity to light or sound

This list is not exhaustive. Check out the CDC’s Heads Up to Parents site for more information at http://www.headsupparents.org.

Myth: A concussion is “no big deal.” Kids should just shake it off. Fact: A concussion is also known as a mild traumatic brain injury. Not only is it unwise for your child to continue in sports-related activities while recovering from a concussion, she may also need to cut back on mental stimulation. Among the Center for Disease Control’s (CDC) recommendations for concussion patients are that they: • Get plenty of sleep at night, and rest during the day. • Avoid physically demanding activities (e.g., sports or working out) or those requiring much concentration (e.g., sustained computer use, reading). The CDC suggests kids not return to activities until they can engage in them without symptoms returning and to slowly increase the level of activity. For some kids it may mean a reduction in school hours, homework amounts, or both. The American Association of Pediatrics offers a helpful form your pediatrician can complete to direct the school on accommodations to be made should your child have a concussion. You can find it online at: http://www.aap.org/ en-us/about-the-aap/Committees-CouncilsSections/Council-on-sports-medicine-andfitness/Documents/returntoschool.pdf Myth: Only football and hockey players sustain concussions. September/October 2017

Fact: According to the American Academy of Neurology (AAN), football and rugby top the list of sports where boys are most susceptible to concussion, followed by hockey and soccer. Girls face the greatest risk of concussion while playing soccer and basketball. For younger children (birth to 9 years), bicycling and playground activities account for the greatest number of head injuries, including concussions. SUBFAM FILL small 12.16:Layout 1 12/14/16

“A must see!”

Myth: As long as my child wears a helmet, he won’t get a concussion. Fact: Helmets prevent skull fractures, not concussions. While a padded helmet or other protective device may lessen the impact to your child’s cranium, none of them can stop the forces of motion that cause internal brain impact. The AAN encourages parents to make sure their child’s helmet fits well and is kept in good condition to reduce the risk of concussion. With a better understanding of concussions, you can be more aware of what you’re seeing (and what to do) if one happens to your child or another child in your care. Because concussion is more than just a headache - for you and your child. suburban family | subfam.com

Nothing can compare to the cool, crisp air and the colorful leaves of the festive season. As kids head back to school, many parents pledge to take advantage of their family's new schedule by adding workouts to their routine. You have to plan exercise, just like you do everything else. Choose something you'll enjoy doing and will be likely to keep up, whether it's walking or hiking with a friend, working with a trainer or taking part in a "boot camp" class. Having an exercise partner can help you stay motivated. Remember that it takes about four weeks for the body to adapt to lifestyle changes. So, try to stick with a program for a month and it will be much easier.

People are motivated by different things. It's important to discover what your individual goals are, whether it's losing weight, strengthening and toning, or preparing for a race. Signing up for a race event is more fun in the fall thanks to the Halloween themed events. It gives everyone the chance to run around dressed up in costume. You can find quite of few of them on the following pages of this magazine. Each new season is a great time to look through your workout gear to see what needs to be tossed and replaced. Buy some new fall workout clothes to motivate yourself to hit your local running trails or your gym. Walking, hiking and cycling are all awesome in the fall. When exercising outside, layer your clothing. Before your body warms up, you may feel chilled, but once the blood gets pumping, you'll feel overdressed. Don’t forget to wear sunblock, and sunglasses! It’s important to protect your skin and eyes throughout the year. When exercising during dark hours, wear a reflective vest and carry a flashlight. When cycling, affix a light to your helmet or bike. If the gym is not your preferred workout environment, find an exercise class that you enjoy. Many local gyms, recreation centers and fitness studios offer a variety of group exercise classes. If you are stuck at home with sick kids, make the most of it by watching episodes of the new fall shows while on a cardio machine. Just because its cooler out doesn’t mean you can skimp on hydration! People often feel less thirsty when it is not hot outside, but staying hydrated is just as important in the fall as it is when the sun is blazing. Stay on top of your fluid intake to help with both exercise recovery and appetite control. Making small changes in your daily routine can result in big differences in your health. celebrate!

By Carol J. Alexander

N

othing initiates fall more than a harvest party. With a crisp in the air, pumpkins along the walk, and a washtub full of apples to bob for, your friends will know that you understand the meaning of the season. If you long to have friends and family over for an autumn gathering, here are some suggestions to make it a memorable affair.

SWIMMING, SNORKELING, CPR, and SCUBA classes!

HAVE YOUR NEXT BIRTHDAY PARTY WITH US!

BUBBLEMAKER BIRTHDAY PARTIES

Parties for children age 8 to 80, everyone gets to go underwater.

Invitations

Cut apples in half from top to bottom to use as a stamp. Cut pumpkin shapes from orange cardstock. Punch holes in the top of your card about an inch apart, thread raffia through them and tie. Tear pieces of orange, red, and yellow tissue paper into small pieces. Glue on an outline of a tree to make a fall image. Handwrite your invitation on burlap with a permanent marker. Roll up and tie with a plaid ribbon.

Menu

• Roast hot dogs and corn on the cob over a fire. • Make a big pot of chili and serve with chips, cheese, and sour cream. • Hollow out a huge pumpkin and use as a punch bowl to serve hot apple cider or as a tureen to serve pumpkin soup. • Make a Chex Mix and add candy corn and other fall-ish candies. • Create a vegetable platter and use a small, hollowed out pumpkin to serve the dip. • Hollow out apples and use as cups to serve apple cider. Garnish with a cinnamon stick. • Hollow out pumpkins and use as bowls to serve stew. • Make your own pumpkin-spice lattes. • Serve S’mores.

Decorations

Tie dried corn stalks to your porch pillars, fence, or around trees.

Use straw bales for seating in the yard or around the fire. Carve out the inside of a pumpkin. Using a drill, create a pattern of holes in the sides. Use different sized bits to create smaller or larger holes. Place a candle or battery-operated light inside. Replace the top and use to decorate your porch. suburban family | subfam.com

Hollow out miniature pumpkins and use as votive or tea light holders to line a walkway. Use three pumpkins—small, medium, and large—to create a pumpkin topiary. Decorate them individually and then stack them in a planter filled with dried greenery, berries, or straw. Place the largest on the bottom, medium-sized one in the middle, and the smallest on the top. Use blue or green Mason jars, brown root beer bottles, or hollowed out pumpkins as vases for flower arrangements. Line your buffet table with gourds, ears of dried corn, or miniature pumpkins. Create a table runner using burlap feed sacks.

Activities

Set out a big jar of pumpkin seeds. Have guests predict how many seeds are in the jar. Give a prize to the person guessing the closest without going over. Enjoy a game of pumpkin bowling. Cut the stem off a medium-sized pumpkin. Carve out three holes to resemble a bowling ball. Cover rolls of paper towels or empty pop bottles in brown paper and use as pins. Hide miniature pumpkins around your yard and have the kids hunt for them like an Easter egg hunt. Bob for apples. An alternative to bobbing for apples is to hang apples with a string tied to the stem from the clothesline, tree branches, or porch roof. Hang them in varying heights from the ground. Players are to try and grab an apple in their teeth without using their hands. Create a pumpkin ring toss. Set up a line of pumpkins of various sizes. Set a few on straw bales or stack two on top each other to have varying heights. Mark each one with a number of points they are worth. Using hula hoops or needlework hoops, toss them over the pumpkins. The person with the highest score wins. September/October 2017

the olive pupil into the iris. 3. Cut off the bottom third of the egg so it will nestle in the spaghetti spoon. Reserve any hard-boiled egg yolks for spaghetti recipe. 4. Scoop out a small amount of the egg yolk from the top of the egg to make room for mayonnaise. Squirt garlic mayonnaise into the hollow top of the hard-boiled egg, and then replace the iris plug. 5. Paint food coloring bloodshot lines around the iris. Let dry. 6. Finish by brushing a light coat of slightly thickened gelatin glaze over the entire eye to give an authentic glossy finish.
