Give Yourself Time Planning out a fun and productive summer for your family won’t happen overnight. You need to give yourself time to make a plan. If you start before summer vacation kicks off, you will maximize the potential of your ideal activities actually happening. Frantic, last minute planning will cause you undue stress.

Change Up House Rules Whether your kids are in camp or at home, it’s time to reboot your house rules. Account for things like bedtimes for younger kids, whether older children are allowed to have friends over while you are out and any chores the kids are expected to do. All responsible parties, your spouse and any supplemental child care, should be aware of the expectations and rules.

Set Goals The potential to fritter away long, hot, lazy days is incredibly tempting and the time will Prepare for Projects Ahead of Time fly by without anything to show for it if you When you plan to teach your five year old to don’t set goals. most convenient day for your errands and knock them out in one morning or afternoon. Once you’ve done the front end work, be sure to stick with your plan as best you can. This strategy will save you time, money and the frustration of being out of popsicle sticks when you go to construct that Eifel Tower.

Keep mind AND body active all summer long having fun and learning about science, technology, engineering, art, and math.

Organize to Fit Your Needs When school gets out, be sure that you have all of the materials and supplies you will need for the day to day. Do an inventory check and if you’re missing items, put them on your shopping list. Gather things that will be used together into a central location and be sure that the essentials are at hand and easy to retrieve. Set things up so that the kids can help themselves as much as possible. It may be summer, but you are not their servant. A little organization will go a long way. Team Up With Childcare If you are home with your kids in the summer, chances are that you are going to need a break and if you don’t have them signed up for camp, you definitely will. Talk to other moms in your community, particularly the ones who have similarly aged children, and see if you can set up a kid swap. You watch their kids for an afternoon and they return the favor. No babysitter costs and you get the chance to do your errands in peace. Take Personal Days If you work full time outside of the home, be sure to take a few personal day to spend some quality time with your family. Whether you take the time to go on a vacation, do a day trip with the kids or just hang around the house, enjoy the presence of your family. You, like your children, need some breathing room in the summer. Reassess Weekly Making a plan is only the first step in having a successful summer. The most important step is to reassess what you’re doing each week and making sure that you change the things that are causing you and your family problems. If there is a childcare swap that never seems to pan out, move on from it. If you failed to account for the rain that washed out three of your planned pool days last week, make a backup plan for this week. The school year is coming to a close. It is time to get your family ready for a fun and successful summer. Planning and working towards a success takes some planning and a little bit of work on the front end, but your family will thank you as they experience the best summer yet. May/June 2016

When it comes to putting, what’s more important, line or speed? While line is of course key to holing putts, it’s ultimately a lack of the correct speed that’s contributing to your three-putts. I like to first use a one-to-two ratio in teaching

stroke tempo – meaning the putter swings twice as fast on the way through as it did on the way back – to help create a simple, consistent rhythm that can lead to a better mastery of distance. I then like using a combination of two drills. The Lag-It Drill Lay any club about 18 inches directly behind the hole (perpendicular to the line of the putt) and try to hit putts that go past the hole, but do not hit the club. The Ladder Drill Starting with a 3-footer and working your way out, place a total of four to six balls a few feet apart from one another on the same line to the hole. Putt each in succession and notice the difference in needed speed for each, while also focusing on aim. Read more on the blog at www.GolfTEC.com

If you are looking for the quickest way to shave a few strokes from your score, it can be found practicing for a few minutes before every round on the practice green.

NEWLY

Every golf course’s greens are generally a little different. Some are faster than other, softer etc. Spending just a few minutes before every round can prove to be invaluable. A good way to get a feel for the speed of the greens is to really focus on distance control. Lay down 4 different balls from 20 feet or so away from a hole and try to see if you can stop within a 1 foot radius of the cup. Allow enough time before you tee off to Repeat this little drill four or five times before every round and watch your scores drop in a hurry!

Renovated 18 Hole Course

Fun golf at stic a t n a f GRAND rates!

The 18-hole Arlington Lakes Golf Course has gone through an exciting renovation project since June 2015 as part of the club's Master Plan. All greens were resurfaced or reshaped, all tees and bunkers were completely rebuilt with new forward family friendly tees being added. Three holes were completely redesigned for better routing and enhanced playability, while many other existing holes received some eye-popping upgrades. And with new 3-hole and 6- hole play options, it will all add up to a golf experience that will be more fantastic and more fun than ever!

What is an Uncontested Divorce? An uncontested divorce is a viable and inexpensive option for spouses of all economic and family status. Offering you and your spouse the chance to end your marriage quietly and with dignity. An uncontested divorce means that the spouses are able to agree on the major issues involved in a divorce, such as child custody; child support; spousal support; division of property; and division of debt. Spouses in agreement must still go to court to obtain the court’s approval. However, an uncontested divorce usually moves quicker through the courts, is less expensive, and minimizes the amount of private information made public. While no divorce is without disagreements, an experienced divorce attorney can assist you in getting the best results. May/June 2016

f you’ve got it, you’ve got it. Some people are just born entertainers. From the perfect food, to the best party playlist, to amazing decorations, some folks always throw stellar soirées.

However, the extravagance of a party often relates to the budget. Obviously, a millionaire can throw an impressive, lavish event – but what if your budget is of less epic proportions? From a small gathering to a bigger affair, you don’t need a huge bank account to throw a party that will have everyone talking at brunch the next morning.

Most of your party budget will go toward things that you feel are the most important to your event. When I throw a party I always allocate a large chunk of my budget to candles, banners, and any other mood-setting devices that fit my theme. It’s fine to spend a little extra on your priority items, but that might not leave much for anything else. In this case, try some DIY projects and enlist the help of your friends to relieve some of the financial burden. Here are some of the best tips for entertaining on a strict budget. 1. Use Simple Invitations Unless it’s a wedding or formal event, opt for email invites using Evite. They’re free to send and allow your friends the option to instantly RSVP. If everyone you wish to invite is on Facebook, you can create an event page to dole out food assignments for the evening. It’s the fastest way to tally guests, and you’ll know in advance how much food to purchase. 2. Find Budget Decor While you may love spending money on fancy decor, some of the stuff you have sitting around your house could be perfect for your party, and it won’t cost you a dime. Don’t stress over your lack of swanky china, mix and match three or four designs of bowls, plates, and cups. The effect is vintage, quirky, and most importantly, cheap. Looking for the perfect place cards? Grab everyday items and use a tag and a Sharpie to add names to pine cones, or even cheap dollar store votive candles work perfectly. Skip the pricey fresh-cut flowers and use groupings different-sized candles to create centerpieces. A grouping of or vases filled with citrus fruit will last longer. 3. Supply Cheap Eats Filet mignon? Please. You don’t need to serve pricey cuts of meat to impress your guests. In-

30 out & about

suburban family | subfam.com

stead of full entrees, try offering a smattering of appetizer-sized edibles – you’ll save major dough on your food budget. Soup shooters, meat skewers, and dips fill up your guests on the cheap without sacrificing taste. If you’re really strapped for cash, consider making your party a potluck dinner, or a “recipe exchange” for salads and desserts, and then provide the main dish yourself. 4. Drink Up! Alcohol can be one of the worst budget-busters when it comes to throwing a party. Buy your supplies from the liquor store on consignment or, go the “chic” route and pick a signature drink for the night. Purchase one or two types of alcohol, and you can specifically base your drink around a cheaper wine spritzer over pricier liquor. Just be sure to supply nonalcohol drinks, like sparkling water and punch, for your thirsty guests and designated drivers. 5. Use Smart Phone Music Apps Play the role of DJ by loading your smart phone with the Pandora or iHeartRadio apps. They allow you to create your own “radio stations” tailored by mood or similar artists. Throwing a cocktail party? Load up on Michael Buble and Frank Sinatra. Christmas party? Add an all-holiday station. Anti-Valentine’s with the girls? Kelly Clarkson all the way. If you choose premium memberships, the tunes are commercial-free – otherwise, you’ll get a 15-second break every 30 minutes or so. Final Word An economic recession might not exactly put you in the mood to party, but hosting a night with friends can help you loosen up. By skipping the pricey extras and getting creative with your food and decor, you can throw a cheap party that has the same effect as a pricier fete – time with friends, good food, and epic stories to rehash over breakfast the next day. n our world of constant connectivity, some might argue that kids shouldn’t be expected to “unplug” for weeks on end. And yet most overnight summer camps are still tech-free zones. Why? Recent studies reveal there are good reasons for taking a tech break. And seasoned camp directors are privy to a little known fact: Kids actually enjoy it. Erec Hillis, boys’ camp director at Camp Champions in Texas, says, “Many of our campers actually thank us for the opportunity to put away their phones for a while. Some of them say that it is exhausting to try to keep up with all the demands of being available 24/7, and that camp is a welcome break.”

because campers spend so much time together, that “camp friendships grow so quickly and deeply.” The camp environment itself inspires face-to-face interaction. Campers eat, sleep, and play in proximity to one another. Hillis says, “Kids want to interact with one another. Camp allows kids to be near enough to each other that they don’t need their phones. They can just walk over and start a conversation.” Still, it’s a good idea to prepare your child for the tech-free experience. You may simply inform him of the “no electronics” rule, and express your confidence in his ability to abide by it. Hillis reminds parents not to commiserate with a child who seems reluctant to give up his device. Just remind him that all campers will follow the same rules, and that the camp has good reasons for being tech-free. As Hillis says, “We simply want kids to be comfortable in knowing that they can turn the phone off for a period of time and perhaps enjoy life even more richly, rather than feeling that they are missing out on something.” Gordon recommends experimenting with a tech break of a day or two, sometime before the start of camp. “Do it as a family and recognize how it's actually fun and you feel more connected as people!” He also suggests discussing how your camper can deal with homesickness, and how you’ll keep in touch without devices. Many camps now offer oneway email; parents send email, which is then printed and delivered to campers by the staff. However, Gordon favors old-fashioned snail mail, and says email, “ though easier for the parent to send, is generally not as appreciated by the camper.”

Gordon acknowledges that being disconnected from screens is more difficult for parents than for campers. “ It's also a different experience (and harder), since the parent is in their same world, while the camper is busy in a new environment,” he says. Yet parents would do well to practice some tech “downtime” for the duration of the camp session. Thompson writes, “My advice: Stop the emails, just send one or two packages per summer and give yourself a break from checking the camp’s online photos. Go buy some stamps and write a long letter or two or nineteen.” During the weeks at summer camp, your child will make new friends. Everyday she’ll eat, bunk, play, share adventures, and have heart-to-hearts with them. True, she may use social media to stay in touch with her camp friends throughout the year. But memories of the things they did together—tipping the canoe, singing by the fire, playing pranks on the counselors—will create the strongest of bonds. She’ll yearn for next summer when she can ditch the smartphone and wrap her arms around her forever friends. Face-to-face.

In fact, experts like Thompson recommend letter-writing as the primary form of communication between parent and camper. He writes that “the time spent between sending and receiving a letter is a valuable opportunity for both parent and child to think about one another without having to do anything with or for each other.” He believes a child cannot become independent without spending time away from parents, and warns that “minute-by-minute contact with parents undermines the sense of separation.” So don’t be the parent who slips an extra phone into your child’s duffel!

arents have to make decisions that will affect their children’s lives for years to come every day. From what school to send them to, to something more basic like what to serve at mealtime, the choices are endless and they only multiply, as kids get older. One decision that can be a difficult one to make is sending kids to summer camp. Parents have to worry about the camp’s reputation, if it encompasses activities that interest their children and most importantly if the experience will help children grow and learn new skills. Match Age with Activity – Look for a camp that will challenge your child as he or she grows and that offers varying levels of activities. Children can start off as campers, they can learn new skills as they get older and eventually take on a leadership role as a camp counselor. Stretch Boundaries – A camp that offers activities that pique your child’s interest should be considered when researching options, but avoid choosing a camp that does not give your child a chance to try new things and learn. A well-balanced camp experience should be a top priority, one where children have the freedom to do what they enjoy and the chance to branch outside of their comfort zone. Disconnect from Technology – It is a wellknown fact that children spend too much time staring at screens today. Many summer camps do not allow children to bring cell phones or have access to computers and video games while at camp. While at first children can feel isolated, by the end of camp they will have

had free time to enjoy nature, discover them selves and make new friends without the influence of technology.

Start with a Test Drive – If you or your child is nervous about heading to summer camp for the first time, test the waters. Sign up for a short session to start and if your child enjoys the experience, plan for a longer, more immersing experience next summer.

Consider Nutrition – Mystery meat, pizza and nachos are called to mind when many people think about stereotypical camp food. But, many camps offer healthy meal choices filled with fruits, vegetables and whole The Camping and Education Foundation’s grains. KEEP YOUR FEET INJURY FREE W arm weather has arrived inviting us to jump into our favorite outdoor sports after hibernating all winter. However, a quick move into high physical activity when your feet are not quite ready can cause major injuries to the feet ruining those plans for a summer of fun.

• Be sure to wear footwear that is specific to the sport. • Appropriate training for the specific sport. Impact sports such as running will place greater stress on your feet. Cross-training

He continues, “Tendinitis occurs when a tendon gets excessively overloaded just like a rope that starts to fray after it is subject to wear and tear. The body responds to this type of tendon injury by sending inflammatory mediators to the area and this is what leads to the pain and swelling associated with tendinitis. Depending on which tendons in the foot are excessively loaded will determine which part of the foot will develop tendinitis.

One of the most important ways to obtain good foot health is to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle throughout the year so extra weight does not suddenly adversely impact your feet. If you feel any discomfort with your feet, have them evaluated by your orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeon before beginning an active exercise program. Remember, the feet are the body’s shock absorbers. Orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeons use medical, physical, and rehabilitative methods as well as surgery to treat patients of all ages.

Tips for keeping your feet pain-free? • Warm up exercises such as a short period of walking and stretching. • Stretch again after exercising. with “feet-friendly” non-impact activities, such as swimming, biking, elliptical trainers, and steppers. Stephen J. Pinney, MD, of San Francisco, CA, says, “Walking puts more stress on your feet than you might think! Every time you take a step 2-3 times your body weight goes through your feet, more if you are running. That is a lot of cumulative force going through the sole of the foot and the various tendons that control the movement of the foot. This repetitive loading can predispose to many common "chronic" foot conditions such as metatarsal46 fitness first

gia, tendinitis, and plantar fasciitis. Metatarsalgia is a painful condition involving the forefoot. It occurs when the tissue in the sole of the forefoot gets irritated and painful from the repetitive loading especially if the force is concentrated in a localized area in the forefoot.

suburban family | subfam.com

Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of chronic heel pain. It develops as a result of repetitive microtrauma to the heel region. As Dr. Pinney says, “The plantar fascia is a dense tissue that is found in the sole of the foot beginning at the heel bone. With each step a person takes this tissue is loaded. If someone increases the amount of walking they do, walks on hard surfaces, or gains extra weight they may suffer repetitive microtearing of the plantar fascia insertion. This will lead to heel pain, particularly first thing in the morning which is a characteristic sign of plantar fasciitis. To keep those feet healthy, always remember: • Proper shoe wear that is appropriate to the specific sport • Proper evaluation by an orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeon • Adequate training • Stretch before and after exercising • Mix activities through cross training To find an AOFAS orthopaedic surgeon in your area, go to www.aofas.org. Maximize Precious Minutes with Medical Specialists By Sue LeBreton

T

aking your child to see a medical specialist dredges up a complex mixture of emotions. Understandably, you worry about the condition that has caused you to seek the assistance of this specialist. Add in your hope that this expert can provide answers. Stir in any intimidation you feel if you are not a medical person and you have a recipe for a stressful interaction.

You can ease your anxiety about this meeting through preparation. If you spend some time before the appointment detailing your child's health history in writing you will demonstrate that you respect the busy schedule of the specialist and you will maximize the benefit of the interaction. Think of yourself as a fellow detective providing evidence to help the specialist solve your child's case. Remember, even things that seem unrelated to you can be significant to the medical expert. Err on the side of too much information. The Basics Your primary tool is a detailed document that includes your child's name, date of birth, May/June 2013

medical number if applicable and a notation that this was prepared by you on this date. If your document has multiple pages, number the pages and ensure these identifiers are on each page. What else should you include in your child's health history? Start at the beginning, no matter the age of your child. Was your pregnancy normal? Was your child born full term? Were there any complications during pregnancy? Were there any complications during delivery? Was the baby delivered naturally? Did your baby require any medical interventions at birth? Did you breastfeed and if so, for how long? How would you describe your baby? Fussy? Easy? Do you have other children? What is the status of their health? Developmental milestones Note developmental milestones such as when your child first sat, waved goodbye, walked, was toilet trained and talked. If your child is in school, how do they perform academically? Does your child require any modifications or accommodations at school? Has the teacher noticed any changes or behaviors of concern? Has your child's eye sight and hearing been tested? Note the results and timing of any such tests.

Medical interventions Has your child ever been hospitalized? If so, when, for what reason and for how long? Is your child currently on any medication? Bring medications with you so that the specialist can confirm dosages. Detail any previous use of medications and why they were discontinued. Remember to document any supplements or alternative therapies. Has your child seen other specialists? Include their names, dates and any follow up that has resulted. Family history The specialist may be interested in either parent's medical conditions. Include conditions that you experienced even if you have grown out of them. Remember grandparents on both maternal and paternal sides, do they have any medical or psychological issues? Even if you think these conditions are unrelated, try to give the specialist as much information as possible. This is no time to guard family secrets. Current concern When did you first become concerned about this issue and why? How often do you see symptoms or behaviors that concern you? Have you tracked symptoms on a calendar? You may notice symptoms only on certain

days of the week or seasonally and that pattern can give the specialist important clues. The appointment Take a deep breath and reassure yourself that despite the expertise of whomever you are interacting with, you are the expert concerning your child. Give one copy of your carefully prepared heath history to the specialist and keep one for your personal reference. This will help you stay focused and remember important information. It is easy to forget pertinent details when you are experiencing stress. Also, you can be distracted trying to placate a child who may not want to be there. Bring a pen and notebook to scribe any instructions or questions you cannot answer in the moment. Post appointment Open up your original document and add the details of your visit including the doctor's name and any recommendations made. Note any follow up. Try to do this as soon as possible after the visit when your memories are fresh. As you add to your document, are there any questions you forgot to ask? Add them to your document so you have a record to remind you to address them in other visits with this specialist or other appropriate professionals.
