What’s in store this weekend: Great. Big. Fun.

Brad Stauffer, Gretna Days Foundation President

On behalf of the Gretna Days Foundation, I want to encourage the entire community to participate in Gretna Days July 27 to July 30. We have worked hard to make this year’s celebration the best ever! Sam’s Amusements Carnival will run Thursday and Friday evenings and all day on Saturday. It will be located on Angus Street east of Highway 6, near F&M Bank, and will extend to the Gretna Baptist Church parking lot to help accommodate some additional rides. Special thanks to the City of Gretna, the Gretna Baptist Church and F&M Bank for their helping make this happen. Handicapped parking will be available on the new city property just east of the Baptist church. The teen dance returns Friday from 8 to 10 p.m. in North Park on the basketball court. This year we will have a DJ playing the kids’ favorites. The craft show will take place in North Park on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Last year was a great start, and we believe

the craft show will be bigger and better this year. The Gretna Days Dance and Beer Garden returns on Saturday night, and the community picnic that started it all is Sunday. There are lots more great events and you can find them all on our website, www.GretnaDays.com. The members of our board work hard all year to make this a very special celebration. At a time when many small town celebrations are on the decline, we are proud that ours continues to grow. While we have grown, we remain loyal to our roots. We continue to stress community and nonprofits over commercialization. To this end, the weekend will wrap up with a community picnic on Sunday. We are excited to announce that the rides and inflatables in Peterson Park from last year will return this year for the kids during the picnic, and we have maintained our lowcost price structure for these rides. Our fairytale princesses will be joining us Sunday for the picnic. Obviously word

has gotten out because we hear that some superheroes may be stopping by to visit with the kids as well. I want to thank all those businesses whose support makes Gretna Days possible. Please check out the list at GretnaDays.com and thank them for their support of the weekend. I also want to say a special thank you to all the other members of the Gretna Days Foundation board of directors: Ron VanOeveren, vice president; Kevin Svec, treasurer; Kathy Wendlandt, secretary; Jerry Imig; Mark Hauptman; Bill Lewis and Hubble Reichert. Michelle Leist is also working with the board, and we appreciate her time and assistance. Without their hard work, and lots of volunteered hours, this weekend would not be possible. Please join us at Gretna Days 2017. Come meet your neighbors and enjoy because this weekend is all about the community of Gretna!! Brad Stauffer President, Gretna Days Foundation

For more than 50 years, Gretna Days has celebrated the spirit of the community. What started as a picnic decades ago has grown into a days-long festival. While the size has changed, the idea behind it has not. “It started as a thank you to the community for shopping locally and supporting local businesses, and it still is today,” said Brad Stauffer, president of the Gretna Days Foundation. “We’re excited it continues to be a great community event.” This year’s lineup of events has stayed relatively unchanged from last year, though some events continue to grow in scope. The carnival is back for a second year, and will include two additional rides. Sam’s Amusements, the company that operates the Sarpy County Fair, will offer rides, games and food from Thursday through Saturday on Angus Street along the southwest side of North Park. The carnival also will extend to the Gretna Baptist Church parking lot. “It’s a growing process. This year we’ll expand the area to accommodate more activities,” Stauffer said. “It can continue to expand as long as there’s more turnout each year.” Another event that was new to Gret-

na Days last year, the craft fair, also will expand its hours and number of vendors this year. Organizers expect several dozen craftspeople and home-based businesses to participate in the event, which will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in North Park. “We’ve had a good response to this event,” Stauffer said. “We’ve added more crafters, and we hope it will continue to grow.” These events will blend with old favorites, such as Friday’s fireworks and Sunday’s community picnic, to provide plenty of opportunities for area residents to join in the celebration. “We really just want people to come out and enjoy themselves,” Stauffer said. What makes Gretna Days a success year after year is the community support from business sponsors and volunteers, Stauffer said. Numerous community groups step up to sponsor and organize events during the celebration, and the Gretna Days Foundation – a stand-alone corporation run by a group of volunteers – relies on this support. “We have so many businesses and donors that support us,” Stauffer said. “For us on the board, it’s really a labor of love.” Gretna Days gets into full swing on Friday with the Gretna Days golf tournament at TiSee Celebrate: Page 7

buron Golf Course. Also on Friday, the Gretna Optimist Club will host its annual barbecue in Peterson Park, The carnival and teen dance will take place in North Park ahead of the fireworks display. To close out the Friday festivities, Gretna’s own Peters Pyrotechnic Productions will launch a fireworks show about 9:45 p.m. at North Park, although there’s not a bad seat in town. This year Nebraska Crossing Outlets is sponsoring the display. Saturday starts bright and early at 7 a.m. with the Resurrection Run. Sponsored by Resurrection Lutheran Church, there’s a pancake breakfast at the church afterward that’s open to the community. The day’s traditional favorites include the Gretna Optimist costumed Kiddie Parade and the Gretna Days Parade sponsored by the Gretna Area Chamber of Commerce. The Kiddie Parade starts in front of Resurrection Lutheran Church, 153 S. McKenna Ave., while the main parade travels north on McKenna Avenue beginning near the main Gretna Library before heading east on Angus Street to end at the Gretna City Pool in Peterson Park. For hungry parade goers, the Gretna High School dance team will offer concessions in Peterson Park at the gazebo during the parade. SilverRidge Assisted Living will serve its annual free hot dog feed following the parade at the assisted living center, 20332 Hackberry Drive, next to the high school. New this year, the Gretna American Legion Post will offer

Lunch at the Legion featuring a Czech meal and kolache sale starting at 11 a.m. Saturday’s lineup also includes a slowpitch softball tournament, garden tractor pull and kiddie pedal tractor pull. Those attending Gretna Days can cool off Saturday afternoon during the Gretna Fire Department’s waterfights on Angus Street at Peterson Park, and teens can enjoy a pool party at the Gretna City Pool starting at 7 p.m. On Saturday night, Gretna Days won’t end when the sun sets. The Gretna Days Foundation will host a dance and beer garden in Village Square for those 21 and older. Omaha band Hi-Fi Hangover returns this year and will perform beginning at 8:15 p.m. For the younger set, the carnival will continue throughout the evening. Gretna Days wraps up on Sunday but not before a full day of activities with the Road Burners Car Show downtown on McKenna Avenue, an ice cream social and quilt auction at Gretna United Methodist Church and the popular Knights of Columbus tube races for all ages in the Gretna City Pool. The traditional free community picnic in Peterson Park also takes place beginning at 11 a.m. Sunday. In addition to a free lunch, there will be inexpensive rides, games and live music for all to enjoy. “This is really one of the events that defines Gretna Days,” Stauffer said. To find out more about this year’s Gretna Days events, check out the organization’s website: gretnadays.org.

Parade to honor Nebraska’s 150th year of statehood 10:30 a.m. kickoff is preceded by 9 a.m. Kiddie Parade By Susan Skinner

Gretna Breeze Editor This year’s Gretna Days Parade will celebrate the state’s 150th anniversary and life in Gretna. When the longtime event hits the streets of downtown on Saturday morning, this year’s theme of “The Good Life. The Great Life. #GretnaLife!” will be on display. “Help us celebrate Nebraska’s 150th birthday. We thought our #GretnaLife campaign fit well with this year’s sesquicentennial,” said Clay Heavican, board president of the Gretna Area Chamber of Commerce and a pa-

rade organizer. A highlight of the annual community celebration, the parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. from in front of the main branch of the Gretna Public Library on South Street and travel north up McKenna Avenue before heading east on Angus Street to end near the City Pool in Peterson Park. Parade organizers expect about 90 entries, including the Shriners, Gretna High School Band and Gretna Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department. The Gretna American Legion will lead the parade. “The parade is a great way to see all that Gretna has to offer. Businesses, nonprofits, sports teams, Scouts. Come see what there is to do in Gretna,” Heavican said. Parade organizers encourage this year’s entries to have some fun with the chosen theme. See Parade: Page 9

“We hope the floats think about how life has changed in Gretna over the last 150 years and use that as inspiration,” Heavican said. As a further incentive for parade entries, the chamber, which sponsors the event each year, will award cash prizes. This year’s judging categories for parade entries will be floats and walkers, which will include dance groups and bands. The 2017 Citizen of the Year will serve as grand marshal of the parade. The honoree will be announced the evening before the parade during a presentation in Peterson Park. Sponsoring both the parade and the award continues to be important to the chamber. “We recognize the parade as a great way for local businesses to come together with the community in a fun and entertaining way,” Heavican said. The Gretna Optimist Club’s Kiddie Parade will be the opening act for the Gretna Days Parade. The parade for the younger crowd will begin at 9 a.m. in front of Resurrection Lutheran Church, 153 S. McKenna Ave. Registration and line up for the parade begins at 8:30 a.m. This year’s categories include cartoon/ storybook characters, superheroes and patriotic, wheels (bikes, wagons and battery cars) and miscellaneous prizes will be awarded.

By Susan Skinner Suburban Newspapers The setting sun doesn’t mean the Gretna Days fun must come to an end. On Saturday night, the Gretna Days Foundation will sponsor a dance and beer garden for those 21 and older. The Gretna Days Dance and Beer Garden kicks off at 7 p.m. and runs until 1 a.m. in Village Square, located at the southwest corner of Highway 370 and Highway 31/6. There’s no cover charge to attend the event, which has been part of the annual community festival for more than five years now. “As the crowd gets bigger each year, we keep improving things,” said Brad Stauffer, president of the Gretna Days Foundation. “We want to streamline the event, and keep it flowing.” This year, local Omaha band Hi-Fi Hangover returns and will perform beginning at 8:15 p.m. and continue until 12:45 a.m. “They went over well last year, so we brought them back,” Stauffer said. Those attending must be 21 or over and no outside food or drink is allowed. Food will be available for purchase along with drinks; credit cards will be accepted.

Give carnival rides, games a whirl at Gretna Days By Susan Skinner Suburban Newspapers For the second year, a carnival will kick off the Gretna Days celebration. After making its debut last year, the carnival with rides, games and food vendors will return with some additions. “They’re going to bring a couple more rides,” said Brad Stauffer, president of the Gretna Days Foundation. “One will be for the smaller kids, and one for older ones.” The Gretna Days carnival will run for three days and will be located on Angus Street, along the south side of North Park. The carnival also will expand to the parking lot of Gretna Baptist Church. The carnival will open at 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday and at noon on Saturday. All-you-can-ride wristbands will be available Thursday and Friday nights and from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday. Tickets will need to be purchased on Saturday evening. The carnival comes to town courtesy of Sam’s Amusements, the company that operates at the Sarpy County Fair. The carnival has the potential to expand each year based on the community response. “It’s a growing process. This year we’ll expand the area to accommodate more activities,” Stauffer said.

While supplies last, free hot dogs on the menu at Silver Ridge tent By Susan Skinner

Gretna Breeze Editor Hot dogs will be on the menu Saturday at SilverRidge Assisted Living, and the community is invited to the picnic. “It’s our 16th year,” said Lisa Arp-Sedlacek, assistant executive director at SilverRidge. “It’s a way of showing our support for the community.” Each year as the Gretna Days Parade winds down, SilverRidge pulls out all the stops to host a free community hot dog feed. This year 1,300 hot dogs have been ordered and will be served along with chips, lemonade or tea, and an ice cream sandwich. Food will be served beginning at 11 a.m. and will be available while supplies last. Lunch will be served in tents at the center, which is located off 204th Street at 20332 Hackberry Drive next to Gretna High School. SilverRidge started the event as a way to introduce itself to the community, and grew into a well-loved tradition. “We started it when we were new here. We just wanted to be involved in the community. And, of course, we wanted people to come see us,” Arp-Sedlacek said. “We have a great time each year. All kinds of people stop by. We see people we haven’t seen in years.”

Those who attend can expect to find more than a hot dog lunch. Visitors will have a chance to check out the SilverRidge float from the parade, up close, and also get to know some local small business vendors that will have booths at the event. Some proceeds from the event will go toward fighting Alzheimer’s Disease, Arp-Sedlacek said; freewill offerings will be collected for the SilverRidge team participating in the upcoming Sarpy County walk.
