Handshakes, smiles, open doors, and new opportunities. GRETNA 817 Village Sq., 402.332.4261 168th & Harrison St., 402.895.2938
WELCOME Dear Gretna Community, Happy 2019! On behalf of the Gretna Area Chamber of Commerce and its members, I would like to thank each of you for picking up a copy of this year’s Green Book and calling on our local businesses year after year. One of the biggest reasons Gretna continues to grow and thrive is because we are a community. Thank you to everyone who shops small and local throughout the year. I would like take a moment and give a personal welcome to our new board members: Margi Clark (Pro-Cuts/SuperCuts) and Thom Hazell (Inter-Tech Collision Center). In addition, we welcome back Renee Reding (State Farm Insurance). These are faces and names you probably already know — new and old business owners alike — jumping in to share their experience and insight with us for the next three to six years. I would also like to say a special thank you to our outgoing board members: Spencer Kimball (Pinnacle Bank – Gretna) and Tim Matulka (Edward Jones). I cannot count the number of volunteer hours these gentlemen have put in to make our chamber, and our community, what it is today. We are looking forward to a great 2019. We have already added several new members to the Gretna Chamber and are welcoming back many great businesses that
continue to be staples in our community. We are excited to have new businesses coming to Gretna this year and would love to see you at the ribbon-cutting events. We are proud to have a continued partnership with the Gretna Public Library, making www.GretnaEvents.com a reality. Simplifying event sharing for both our members and the community continues to be a long-term goal for our chamber. If you haven’t checked it out, please take a minute and see what’s happening around town. You can even sync your calendar with it, so you never miss an event! Our 2019 goal is to help our community,
and our membership be involved. We strive every day to create meaningful opportunities to connect you with one another. From the #GretnaLife Community Expo to the Holiday Tree Lighting, we hope to see your faces enjoying our community, because we truly believe we live Gretna — The Great Life, #GretnaLife. Sincerely,
Bryan Boyce 2019 Chamber Board President

CHAMBER HISTORY
Chamber grew from a need to promote local businesses
In the “old days,” Gretna business owners would convene at certain locations around town to discuss everything from taxes to business. In 1984 some local business owners, including Dan Washburn, Mike Wohlers, Joe Piccolo, Jack Koke, Don and Ed Frederick and Web Warren, decided a new direction was needed. They were looking for a way to increase their market share from the local population and resolved to come up with ways to convince people that they could provide the same goods and services at the same price that they could find in the “big city” but with less hassle and smaller crowds. At that time, Dan Washburn was a member of the Ashland Chamber of Commerce and was aware of its annual directory of member names and phone numbers so the public would have easy access to the information. He presented
this idea to the group, and it was decided to approach other local businesses with the idea. By joining the group for $25 per year, local businesses could get their name and phone number in a simple directory that was distributed to residents in the 68028 ZIP code. The group chose the name Gretna Area Business Association to avoid fees with the state and national Chambers of Commerce. In the early years they tried many promotions to attract customers — everything from giving away turkeys during the holidays to using homemade Gretna Bucks encouraged patrons to shop locally. In the early 1990s when the chamber had grown to more than 100 members, Chamber President Emil Beyer led a plan to change the name to the Gretna Area Chamber of Commerce. The name change was voted on, made official, and the Gretna Area Chamber of Commerce was established. Today, the chamber has more than 250 members. The chamber still publishes a printed directory and now maintains a website with direct contact information for owners of local businesses. The chamber is active in community affairs and in recruiting new businesses to the city, as well as promoting existing members. This is augmented by local advertising and ribbon cuttings to promote businesses new and old. Yet this is by no means the final chapter. As Gretna continues to grow and more businesses invest in the area, the chamber will continue to adapt and change to the needs of one of Nebraska’s most vital and growing communities.
• Printed in 1996, one of the early chamber directories was a one-page listing of members. Submitted by founding member Harney Realty Company-Jack & Gloria Koke.
The Gretna Area Chamber of Commerce directory is published for chamber members, the Gretna community and visitors. Suburban Newspapers is pleased to partner with the chamber on this publication.

GRETNA HISTORY
G
Gretna Main Street in the 1920s — looking south form the McKenna Avenue and Wallace Street.
retna got its start as Forest City, a settlement near the confluence of the Elkhorn and Platte Rivers. Irish immigrants built dugouts and log cabins near the settlement, which was incorporated in 1858. But the Burlington Railroad had other plans for its route to Ashland. The rail line was built a short distance, less than three miles, from Forest City. Gradually residents began relocating nearer the railroad right-of-way to create a new town. The new city’s name of Gretna came from Gretna Green in Dumfriesshire, Scotland, home to some of the Scottish settlers of the town. The Lincoln Land Company purchased a deed in April 1886, and by August a plat survey was completed and recorded. Forest City dwindled; the only remaining trace of the community is the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery at 231st Street and Schram Road.
Fourth of July parade in 1914 at the corner of McKenna Avenue and Angus Street. In the background is Treckel Hall, which was the community meeting place and housed the City Hotel and a saloon.

GRETNA HISTORY Below, built in 1888, Gretna’s Public School initially served all grades. Photo at left shows the addition and was taken in 1973, after St. Patrick’s Catholic Church purchased the building at auction for $55,800. The building last held students in 1971. The addition was complete in 1908.

ABOUT GRETNA Booming The Gretna area is seeing a boom in new housing. Much like the greater metro area, new neighborhoods are filing up fast. With several new subdivisions such as Aspen Creek, Lakeview, Remington Ridge and Wynwood Estates, home buyers thinking of Gretna should be able to find or build a home in nearly any price range. Existing home sales are strong, too. To meet growing enrollment that is going along with the new homes, new schools are being planned in the Gretna school district. • There are plenty of dining and shopping opportunities in Gretna, including at the Nebraska Crossing Outlets, left, and locally owned establishments. The outlet mall has expanded again, adding 38,000 square feet for popular retailers such as TJ Maxx and Home Goods which open summer 2019. The mall has seen four major expansions since opening in 2013. The owner of the center noted that other expansions are possible, as there is a waiting list of more retailers that want space in the center.

ABOUT GRETNA Forward-looking improvements • Children residing in the Lincoln Place neighborhood will soon have plenty of new play space. The plan will see the land originally set aside for the subdivision’s park area fully developed. Additions include a non-competitive baseball field, construction of a picnic shelter and trail system, 35 parking stalls and plenty of green space. The project is estimated to cost nearly $542,000. • New subdivisions have been approved and construction has begun. Harvest Hills, Hidden Hollow and Lakeview will bring hundreds of new homes to the Gretna area.

Sarpy County is poised to lay the underground work that will eventually open up a wide expanse of land to development — residential, commercial and industrial. The project — installing sewer lines in an area that previously had none — has been a long time coming. Now county leaders hope it keeps Sarpy and Gretna booming. After all, without a humble sewer line, there can be no housing subdivisions, mixed-use destinations or data centers.

SCHOOLS Gretna Public Schools School District No. 37 was created as a small district to serve the village of Gretna in 1888. The first school was located across the road from the LaBorde Cemetery outside Gretna. A two-story brick schoolhouse was constructed in 1898 south of Angus Street across from St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Its size was doubled in 1908, and a gymnasium was added in 1936. As the village grew, so too did the school district. Through minor consolidation over the years and a major consolidation in 1958, the district has grown to its present size of more than 70 square miles. — Gretna Public Schools Administrative Offices 11717 S. 216th St. 402-332-3265

SCHOOLS Growth spurt Gretna school officials last fall revealed the location of their next elementary school. The school will be built about a half-mile north of 196th and Harrison Streets, officials said. The site borders the existing Falling Waters housing development. The location is in the far northern reaches of the district, near the border with the Millard Public Schools. Members of the school board voted 6-0 to purchase 17.6 acres of land for the school, which will be the district’s sixth elementary school. Voter approval of an $85 million bond issue in November 2018 cleared the way for the board’s vote. The board approved pur-
chasing two parcels at a total cost of about $1.01 million. The new building will take enrollment pressure off of several other elementary schools, including Whitetail Elementary, officials said. The school will be built with the same general architectural plan used for other recently built Gretna elementary schools. It will open in the fall 2020. Construction of another elementary school won’t be far behind, officials said. The exact timing and location are dependent on enrollment patterns, Superintendent Kevin Riley said. It is tentatively targeted for opening in 2021. A site has not yet been acquired.
• Gretna Elementary School, which opened in 1960, is due for a major HVAC and plumbing redo, as well as the installation of high-efficiency windows and improvements to interior and exterior lighting, cabinets, shelves, kitchen, ceilings, paint and carpet, officials said. Renovations should be complete before school starts in fall 2019. — Omaha World-Herald

GRETNA ARBOR SOCIETY
T
he Gretna community at large is growing by leaps and bounds. The core of the community is the senior families who have put down roots and spearheaded the growth of our city. Now a younger generation has stepped up to take over the banner of growth and development. These families want to raise their children in an environment where they can learn the value of nature though their parks, playgrounds and sports fields. The Gretna Arbor Society, your local tree board, is taking the lead to ensure that our children and their parents have a place to get outside and learn about nature through the proper selection, planting and care of our community trees. Gretna’s tree board has grown along with the City of Gretna. The board was formed in 1988 when the city had a population of 1,609 and the tree board had a yearly budget of $2,000.00. In 2018, the city now has a population of more than 4,900 with an arbor society budget of $9,810.00
Thanks to the efforts of the Gretna Arbor Society, the City of Gretna was awarded its 31st Tree City USA award and 21st Tree City Growth award from the Nebraska Arbor Day Foundation. Only nine cities in Nebraska have received the Growth Award. Gretna received the Growth Award in part because of the efforts to grow and develop the city parks system and the push to educate the Gretna community about the major disease and insect problems we are now facing and in the future.

GRETNA ARBOR SOCIETY Through the years, the work of the Gretna Tree Board expanded to contribute to the overall development of the Gretna Park System. To better reflect the board’s changing role, its name was changed to Gretna Arbor Society. As the city grew, new parks were developed, tree grants were obtained and free trees were given to Gretna residents. • Between 2008 and 2018, $24,000 in grant funding was obtained, and more than 250 trees were planted with volunteer help. • The highlight for the Gretna Arbor Society is the annual Gretna Free Tree and Planting Program. Since 2009, more than 1,444 trees have been given away. • Marking its 14th year in 2019, an Annual Gretna Tree Talk was created to educate Gretna residents. An Arbor Day Poster Contest was also started for Gretna fifth-grade elementary school students in 2011. The contest has grown from two elementary schools to five.
The Gretna Arbor Society has played an active role in the development of the Fields at Gretna and Founder’s Park behind Gretna City Offices. New trees have been planted in these two parks and a major effort is taking place to expand the Fields at Gretna on the east side of the park and clean up the east section of Founder’s Park. With the increase of insect and disease problems thoughout the Gretna park system, Gretna Arbor Society has joined forces with the Gretna Maintenance Department in the removal of ash trees and Scotch pines thoughout the park system. A number of evergreens have been removed in Leo Royal Park along the edge of Lincoln Road, and if grant money can be obtained, new trees will be planted in this area. The key to the growth and development of Gretna park trees is a diverse tree canopy. This is the guiding principal for all future tree planting in the Gretna park system. Please mark your calendar for the free events of the Gretna Arbor Society.
Gretna Arbor Society offers free education, training and tree-planting events in 2019: April 13 14th Annual Tree Talk at Thomas Elementary School April 25 Fifth-Grade Poster Contest Award Night at Thomas Elementary April 26 Gretna Arbor Day Celebration at Thomas Elementary September, TBA Fall Tree Giveaway/Tree Planting Workshop at Gretna Middle School
Founding Gretna Tree Board members were Norman Connelly, City Forester, Mary Gilligan, Beth Woods, Lisa Babcock, Ethel Filmer and Bob Rustermier.
