Downtown Plattsmouth and The Main Street Entertainment Plaza Plattsmouth Chamber of Commerce, the Plattsmouth Community Center and the Harvest Festival have fun activities throughout the year on the plaza. They include: June 14: Plattsmouth Community Center hosts Zumba on the Plaza, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. June 29: Plattsmouth Chamber of Commerce 3rd Annual Food Truck Wars — live band Riptide Refugees. Free admission, 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. July 26: Plattsmouth Chamber of Commerce hosts Taste of the ’80s-Friday Night Out. Live band
Pink Kadillac. Free admission, 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Sept. 5 to 8: Plattsmouth Harvest Festival — live bands, carnival, beer garden, parades and more. Free admission. July July 26 is Friday Night Out, a showcase of local food, beverages and services. Held at the Entertainment Plaza at Fourth and Main Streets in downtown Plattsmouth, this event draws large crowds and features live music and a fun atmosphere.

September The Plattsmouth Harvest Festival is the oldest annual harvest festival in Nebraska. Now in its 87th year, the family-friendly event features four days of pageantry, parades, carnival rides, an antique tractor show and races, craft fair, car show and shine, contests and games, and a lot more fun for all ages. Sept. 5 to 8 in Plattsmouth.
The Cornhole Tournament returns on Sept. 6.

November Victorian Christmas on Main, late November, is a warm way to celebrate the holiday season. There will be hayrack, pony and horse-drawn carriage rides, plus a reindeer petting zoo. Father Christmas will also be at the celebration, with plenty of music and food featured throughout downtown.
Many businesses will be open with shopping deals and refreshments during the event. Caroling and a tree-lighting ceremony are planned at the Cass County Museum. The log cabin and caboose at the end of Main Street will be decorated and open. This event is free.
May 2020
The Amazing Race — Road Rally returns May 2020. Teams of 2-6 people will compete for cash prizes. Registration begins March 1. Forms can be found at the Plattsmouth Hy-Vee, the Plattsmouth Chamber office or online at plattsmouthchamber.com.

EDUCATION Illustrating the district’s commitment to its students, outdoor classrooms were installed at the early childhood center and the elementary school. The early childhood program is recognized by the Nebraska Department of Education as a model program for positive behavior support. The elementary 21st Century before- and afterschool program consistently receives some of the highest ratings of any programs in Nebraska. A middle school 21st Century after-school program was recently started to support students and families. The wall-to-wall academies of Plattsmouth High School reflect students’ interests and career goals. Students are grouped by academies, creating smaller learning communities within the high school. Combining a core group of teachers with students having similar interests helps create a sense of belonging. Students have a chance to take part in designed programs of study, receiving industry certifications and real-world experience through job shadowing, internships, business mentorships and partnerships with businesses in related fields.

ibrary services have been available in Plattsmouth since 1886, and the Plattsmouth Public Library celebrated its 100th year in its current building in 2016. Besides books, CDs and free Wi-Fi, the library offers a wide selection of movies and TV series plus e-books, e-audiobooks and e-magazines. The library also loans projectors, tables and chairs free of charge and has meeting space available. Free computer classes are offered, too.
Library cards are free to residents of Plattsmouth, and the Reading at Home program brings items to those who are homebound. Library members also have free online access to Ancestry.com (in the library only), language learning software, practice driver’s tests, car and truck repair, and early years of Plattsmouth newspapers. The library offers free programs for children and adults. Guest speakers and authors, concerts, story times and other special events are held regularly. Parents can help their child earn a free book through the “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” program.

T
he Plattsmouth Recreation Department works hard to keep the community active and engaged year-round. The mission of the Plattsmouth Recreation Department is to provide recreation and cultural opportunities for the enjoyment and education of present and future generations. The membership-based center offers a four-lane heated pool, an indoor track, a group fitness room, a basketball/volleyball gymnasium and a fitness/wellness area with free weights, 13 weightlifting stations and cardiovascular machines. Personal trainers are on staff, and child care is available six days per week (check website for days and times). Free Wi-Fi and wallet lockers are available to all center guests.

COMMUNITY CENTER Plattsmouth Senior Center — Open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Community Center. Meals are served at the center at noon Monday through Friday for a suggested donation of $4. The senior center participates in the Meals on Wheels program. The center hosts weekly card games, fitness classes, healthoriented programs and other activities throughout the year.

COMMUNITY CENTER Twin Rivers Water Park — Located just west of Memorial Park at 18th Street and Fourth Avenue, the park is open from late May through August. Hours of operation are noon to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week throughout the summer. The facility has a modern pool with a zero-depth to 3-foot swimming area that contains several water fountains, umbrellas and water toys. A second swimming area is 4 to 6 feet deep and has a 12-foot-deep diving area with diving board. A spiral water slide empties into a 3-foot-deep pool. The diving area contains a water speed slide that propels swimmers into the 12-foot-deep area.

here is plenty of fun and recreation to be had in the Plattsmouth area. If you are eager to get the kids outside, one of Plattsmouth’s parks might just be the place to go. Rhylander Park — Named after a former mayor, Plattsmouth’s largest park runs along Lincoln Avenue from Third to 11th Avenues. Features include playground equipment, a walking trail, baseball/softball fields, soccer fields and a public restroom.
Garfield Park — Located near the center of Plattsmouth at Fifth Street and Second Avenue, this beautiful park boasts a small walking trail, lighted gazebo, Veterans Memorial Garden and public restrooms. Memorial Park — Located in the southwest part of the city at Fourth Avenue between 15th and 18th Streets, it features a nine-hole disc golf course, playground equipment, covered picnic area and public restrooms.
Adjacent to Memorial Park on 18th Street is the city’s skate park. On South 18th Street, behind the Community Center, is Indian Springs Recreation Area. Indian Springs — Features include a fishing lake with a handicappedaccessible fishing pier and a covered picnic shelter. Tennis courts are available in the On The Green subdivision at Bradford Drive and Queens Way.
If a round of golf is more your speed, there are two golf courses in the area for you. Bay Hills Golf Club and Lake Ridge Golf Course are great places to spend an afternoon.

pring saw historic river flooding in Nebraska and Iowa. By some estimates, recovery in some areas could take nine years or longer. Here’s a sampling of efforts supporting disaster relief for the long haul.
PLATTSMOUTH.ORG Check Plattsmouth’s website for updates on the city’s water emergency. On March 14, the City of Plattsmouth declared a water emergency. All nonsanitary, non-essential use of water was ordered to be discontinued because the Plattsmouth Water Treatment plant had been inundated by rising floodwaters. On March 20, the City’s Public Works Director issued a water emergency order to supplement the water emergency declaration. The city is requesting a voluntary reduction of 30% for all residential, industrial, commercial, and institutional water uses. The city is prohibiting the following

uses: irrigation of lawns and other landscaping; washing down of driveways and similar such outdoor uses; operation and filling of swimming pools; washing of vehicles; and operation of commercial car washes. The city is also requiring that restaurants serve water upon request only and that they use singleserving table settings and glasses. The city’s water supply remains safe to drink. Plattsmouth has an emergency connection with Cass County Rural Water District No. 1 to provide water on short-term, restricted-use basis. Customer cooperation is appreciated.

HISTORICAL SOCIETY

ass County Historical Society was organized in 1936. Early displays were housed at the Cass County Courthouse. In 1960, the museum opened in its current location on Main Street. There are several permanent exhibits that tell the history of Plattsmouth and Cass County, including part of the western migration. The society also maintains three historic structures: the Joseph and Mary Cook Log Cabin, originally built in Mynard in 1868; a Burlington caboose built in 1913; and Rock Bluff School, a one-room brick schoolhouse southeast of Plattsmouth that was built in 1870.

PLATTSMOUTH HISTORY
P
lattsmouth began in 1852 when Samuel Martin built a trading post on the western edge of the Missouri River. He erected a two-story home and another building from which he traded. Martin also operated a ferry from Coonsville (present-day Glenwood, Iowa). A town-company was formed on Oct. 26, 1854. The following March, the town was incorporated and named the county seat of Cass County. The first town mayor, Wheatley Mickelwait, was elected in 1857. When Plattsmouth was founded, the Missouri River’s close proximity to the east end of Main Street brought extensive trade. Ferries carried passengers across the river, and paddlewheel boats docked at the town’s riverfront. Overland freight became a big industry for the town. The route out of Plattsmouth, having fewer Platte River tributaries to cross, was preferred by many to haul supplies, both military and civilian, to western outposts.

At the outbreak of the Civil War, Robert Livingston organized Company A of the First Nebraska Car ferries across the Missouri River were Volunteer Regiment and in October 1862 became replaced in 1930 by a steel truss vehicular bridge, the regimental commander. carrying U.S. Highway 34. After the war, Livingston persuaded the Burlington and Missouri River Rail Road to make Plattsmouth its Nebraska headquarters. Construction of the rail line from Plattsmouth to Lincoln and west to Kearney Junction began in early 1869. By December the first passenger trains were running, crossing the Missouri by ferry until 1880, when a bridge was completed. Meanwhile, the Burlington built shops in Plattsmouth. By 1900, employment at the shops reached a peak between 1,000 and 1,200. Although the territorial legislature designated Plattsmouth the Cass County seat in 1855, it wasn’t until 1888 that a majority of county citizens voted Plattsmouth the seat. The courthouse cornerstone was laid in June 1891 and the Romanesque-style edifice completed in 1892.
Since 1931, the Kass Kounty King Korn Karnival has been held every year, except during World War II. In 2013 it was renamed the Plattsmouth Harvest Festival. Plattsmouth has had its share of disasters. In June 1961 the Riley Hotel and Parmele Theater, built in 1890 and 1903 respectively, were destroyed by fire. Up from the ashes, the hotel property became the Cass County Bank, and the theater site was added to the Historical Society museum next door. In 1985, the Plattsmouth Downtown Historic District was created with 42 buildings placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Plaques describe each historic structure.
