EVENTS & CELEBRATIONS Summer Fun The Main Street Entertainment Plaza on South Fourth Street features an outdoor stage with activities Friday and Saturday evenings, May through September. Events are free and family-oriented. Go to www.plattsmouthmainstreet.com for event calendar. Sokol Park, located at 905 Allied Road in La Platte, offers several music events this summer, including the Hullabaloo Music Festival, July 28-30. EVENTS & CELEBRATIONS October Round Up at the Roundabout, Oct. 29, takes place just north of the roundabout at Eighth Avenue. This fun event for the whole family includes free food, bounce houses and trick-or-treating for kids at local businesses.

November The 2016 Annual Chamber Recognition & Awards Banquet will be Nov. 5. Look for plenty of silent and live auction items, plus raffles and games.

December Victorian Christmas on Main, Nov. 28, is a warm way to celebrate the holiday season. There will be hayrack rides, pony rides, horse-drawn carriage rides and a reindeer petting zoo. Father Christmas will also be at the celebration, with plenty of music and food featured throughout the downtown area. Many businesses will be open with shopping deals and refreshments throughout the event. Caroling and a tree-lighting ceremony are planned at the Cass County Museum. MAIN STREET ASSOCIATION lattsmouth Main Streets Association works to preserve and maintain the historic downtown district of the city and its infrastructure.

The group promotes preservation of the district’s unique historic collection of buildings. Plattsmouth is one of the oldest communities in Nebraska, and its downtown is designated as an Historic District with 42 registered historic buildings. The group bolsters community identity, pride and heritage, while striving to improve the quality of life for the city’s residents. A significant turning point occurred in 2010. Work began on the revitalization of Main Street. New sidewalks, curbs and street lamps were installed to improve

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT the expansion of U.S. 75 to a four lane expressway. The project will extend from Fairview Road in Bellevue to a half-mile south of Bay Road. The project is expected to be completed in Fall 2017. Another project for U.S. 75 will convert the highway to a four lane expressway south of Plattsmouth to Murray. This project is scheduled to begin in Fall 2017. The CCNEDC works in conjuction with the city on business retention, expansion and attraction. According to Scheve, the CCNEDC offers assistance to business through research on state and local incentives that might be available for new and expanding business and their employees for continued training and job growth. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We find ways to get your business connected on a local, state and federal level,â&#x20AC;? said Scheve. As a recruiting and retaining tool, financial assistance

here are great schools in Plattsmouth, both public and private.

The Plattsmouth Community Schools is an accredited public school district that offers education for students from kindergarten through 12th grade. The district also has an early-childhood/Head Start program. Community-supported schools in Plattsmouth began in 1857, about three years after the city was founded. In 1868, Plattsmouth elected its first public board of education. Since that time, the district has seen many changes in its elementary, middle and high schools. The student population of the district has remained fairly stable after seeing growth in past years.

Private schools Plattsmouth has two private schools. St. John the Baptist, a Catholic primary and middle school, caters to prekindergarten through 8th grade. First Baptist School offers a Christianfocused education from kindergarten through 12th grade.

LIBRARY century has passed since Plattsmouth Carnegie Library building was built.

The cornerstone was laid on April 19, 1916. To mark the 100th anniversary, a celebration was held April 23, 2016.

PLATTSMOUTH PUBLIC LIBRARY library staff placed items in a new time capsule that was placed back in the cornerstone.

speakers and authors, concerts, storytimes and other special events keep the library a lively place.

The library opened in Nov. 1, 1916. Todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s library staff, led by Director Karen Mier, plans festivities to mark the anniversary in November. Items from the 1916 time capsule that was opened in April will be on display during the celebration.

One program encourages children to read to Capone, a Shar pei-Rottweiler mix, on the second and fourth Mondays of the month. Capone is a registered threapy animal. Capone has been trained and tested for health, safety, appropriate skills, and temperament. He will sit patiently while a child reads to him. To schedule a time with Capone, contact the library staff.

The 100-year old building is in need of some sprucing up. A number of issues have been addressed, but more items on the punch list remain to be completed. The library is seeking donations to help cover the cost of the restoration and repairs. More than simply books and CDs, the Plattsmouth library offers programs for children and adults. Guest

COMMUNITY CENTER Twin Rivers Water Park — Located just west of Memorial Park at 18th Street and Fourth Avenue. The park is open from late May through August. Hours of operation are noon to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week throughout the summer. The facility contains a modern pool with a zero-depth to 3-foot-swimming area that contains several water fountains, umbrellas and water toys. A second swimming area is 4 to 6 feet deep and also has a 12-footdeep diving area with diving board. A spiral water slide empties into a 3-foot-deep pool. The diving area contains a water speed slide that propels swimmers into the 12-foot-deep area.

HISTORY

lattsmouth began in 1852 when Samuel Martin built a trading post on the western edge of the Missouri River. He erected a two-story home and another building from which he traded. Martin also operated a ferry from Coonsville, present-day Glenwood, Iowa. A town-company was formed on Oct. 26, 1854. The following March, the town was incorporated and named the county seat for Cass County. The first town mayor, Wheatley Mickelwait, was elected in 1857. When Plattsmouth was founded, the Missouri River’s close proximity to the east end of Main Street brought extensive trade. Ferries carried passengers across the river, and paddlewheels docked at the town’s riverfront. Overland freight became a big industry for the town. The route out of Plattsmouth, having fewer Platte tributaries to cross, was preferred by many to haul supplies, both military and civilian, to western outposts. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Robert Livingston recruited company A of the First Nebraska Volunteer Regiment and in October 1862 became the regimental commander. After the war, Livingston persuaded the Burlington and Missouri River Rail Road to make Plattsmouth its Nebraska headquarters. Construction of the rail line from Plattsmouth to Lincoln and west to Kearney Junction began in early 1869. By December the first passenger trains were running, crossing the Missouri by ferry until 1880, when a bridge was completed. Meanwhile the Burlington built shops in Plattsmouth. By 1900 employment at the shops reached a peak between 1,000 and 1,200. Although the territorial legislature designated Plattsmouth the Cass County seat in 1855, it wasn’t until 1888 that a majority of county citizens voted Plattsmouth the seat. The courthouse cornerstone was laid in June 1891 and the Romanesque-style edifice completed in 1892. It remains “the” Plattsmouth landmark. Car ferries across the Missouri River were re-

placed in 1930 by a steel truss vehicular bridge, carrying U.S. Highway 34. Since 1931, the Kass Kounty King Korn Karnival has been held every year, except during World War II. In 2013 it was renamed the Plattsmouth Harvest Festival. Plattsmouth has had its share of disasters. In June 1961 the Riley Hotel and Parmele Theater, built in 1890 and 1903 respectively, were destroyed by fire. Up from the ashes, the hotel property became the Cass County Bank, and the theater site was added to the Historical Society museum next door. In 1985 the Plattsmouth Downtown Historic District was created with 42 buildings placed on the National Register of Historic Places; plaques describe each historic structure. As one of the Midwest’s Victorian-era architectural gems, the district has attracted national notice. In 20102011, the downtown area underwent extensive landscaping, including the creation of an entertainment plaza, where crowds gather summer weekend evenings for live entertainment.
