o good neighbors, old and new: We are delighted to have you as a vital part of our community. Speaking as Mayor of Ralston and on behalf of our city government, we recognize that our citizens are our most important asset. We continue to provide an environment that enriches our community and its residents. Although an island surrounded by much larger cities, we continue as a small town with a “Spirit of Independence.” As you drive by 72nd and Q Streets, you may notice our amazing new arena complex that hosts the Omaha Lancers, Omaha Beef and UNO Men’s Basketball. The arena holds 3,500 to 4,000 people for various types of family events. We have two sheets of ice that provide entertainment for all ages, and the lobby can be used for weddings, dinners and special gatherings. Behind the arena is a new 270-unit apartment complex. The Ralston Arena opened in October 2012. Since then, things have really begun to bloom for the city. “We really are starting to see the fruits of of all that,” said Ralston Mayor Don Groesser, referring to the energy and excitement that the new arena has generated. Since it opened, the arena has played host to sporting events, concerts, trade shows, graduations and more. Arena General Manager Paul Hendrickson and his staff are working hard to bring more and better events to the venue. They have brought in wedding receptions, breakfast and lunch meetings and other types of events. “We will work to continue to increase the See Page 14

amount of home tenants we have,” Hendrickson said, pointing to teams such as the Omaha Lancers and the Rollergirls. The arena just signed a long-term contract with a craft show operation that will hold two shows a year at the arena. The Ralston Area Chamber of Commerce also hosts its networking event, Schmooz-A-Palooza, at the arena. See Page 8 for more about Schmooz-APalooza. With these new and varied events come more visitors to Ralston. According to Groesser, the city is estimating that 650,000 unique visitors will visit the arena each year. That’s something the city can take better advantage of, and in some cases it already is. A new hotel is going up just south of the arena. The Holiday Inn Express is expected to be ready for guests by mid-2014. Part of the mayor’s vision for Ralston is to make it a destination, similar to the Old Market or Midtown Crossing. Groesser said he would love to see more of those arena visitors stay a little

Side developments Thanks in large part to the new Ralston Arena, there is a new energy in the city. A Holiday Inn Express is under construction to the south of the arena, with a completion date in mid-2014. Menard’s opened a new home improvement store a few hundred yards from the arena.

longer in Ralston and visit the city’s downtown district. The new Menards home improvement store is evidence of more excitement near the arena site. Besides the Menards there are new retail stores and restaurants that have opened or are planned for the area, Groesser said. Hendrickson pointed out that the arena is working on building more relationships with downtown Ralston businesses. “More businesses are tagging into what we are doing here,” said Hendrickson. “It benefits everybody.”

Why ever leave Ralston? Ralston is working on creating a new master plan. According to the mayor, the last time this happened was in 1994. Along with his vision of Ralston as a destination spot, the mayor is asking for input on what the Ralston of the future will look like. The goal is to have the finalized plan complete by December 2013 and adopted by the city council by January or February of 2014. What’s the big deal? New retailers coming into the area might help the city keep up with bond payments on the arena. A state law allows Ralston to collect up to 70 percent of the sales tax revenue generated at new businesses opening within 600 yards of an arena. From earlier reports, projections show that Ralston would need about $50 million in retail sales each year to keep current with bond payments. The average Menards store does about $40 million in sales annually.

Low vision and deaf Machine Operator Bobbie Jo Salazar performs product quality checks at the 7.1 Mile Rewinder. This machine is equipped with enlarged touch screens and other voice output software that allows visually impaired associates to be operators. “I have learned a lot since I started working on the 7.1 Mile Rewinder. I truly enjoy working here because I feel like I am part of a team.”

Blackman is learning windows-based programs non-visually. He was the first associate to complete ONI’s Education and Training Program. “The skills I learned through the Education and Training Program made it possible for me to use the computer independently and to take online business classes. If I had not received this training, I would not be able to use the computer at all.”
