Introduction
Welcome to our latest BID newsletter.
Masterplan
to create town centre vision
Summer already seems like a distant memory although the recent spell of unseasonably warm weather serves as a reminder. It has been a challenging period for retailers in the town centre over the summer months.
“
The continuing building work, while a sign of future growth and long-term investment in Sutton, inevitably has caused some disruption. While this is only temporary, we are working hard to encourage shoppers to continue to visit the high street. Over the summer we delivered a number of events and initiatives to increase footfall. Our pop-up crazy golf course proved a hit, with more than 4,800 games played during the month of August. August also saw the return of Sunset Cinema, London’s only high street cinema. The free film screenings were watched by hundreds of people and it was fantastic to see so many families enjoying the events and making the most of what Sutton has to offer. Our Enjoy Sutton deckchairs provided a wave of colour and a place for people to relax and have lunch while the weather was fine and our Swipii loyalty card is growing, with new retailers signing up to be part of the scheme. Time now seems to be on fast-forward as we rapidly approach one of the busiest times of the retail year.
A bold vision for Sutton town centre is what is needed if it is to remain a competitive retail and leisure destination.
With that in mind our newsletter includes some tips on planning ahead for the festive season so that businesses can capitalise on the busy shopping period.
A consortium of planning and regeneration advisors has been appointed by Sutton Council to create a masterplan outlining town centre development over the next 15 years.
We are also planning events and activities, including the Christmas lights switch-on, which this year will be carried out by Michelle Heaton of 90s pop band Liberty X, to draw people to the town centre. The latest news on all the events taking place in the run-up to Christmas can be found on our new-look website, www.enjoysutton.co.uk
A key part of the design process will be obtaining the views of traders and BID levy payers on improvements to the town centre to enable it to compete with its neighbours for continued commercial and business investment.
Finally, we are delighted that Sutton is one of 100 towns to receive support from some of the UK’s biggest brands as part of Business in the Community’s Healthy High Streets programme.
The news has been welcomed by Ross Feeney, Successful Sutton chief executive.
The nationwide programme aims to increase footfall, reduce the number of empty shop premises and stimulate the creation of new jobs. This is one of many exciting developments that will help shape Sutton town centre and ensure its future prosperity.
”
Approximately £400m of private investment has been secured for Sutton over the past few years, evidence of which is all the cranes and building work currently visible.
However, Sutton needs to change and adapt to remain a competitive retail and leisure environment over the next 20 years and a strategic re-think of the north of the high street (incorporating the current market) is much-needed. We welcome the prospect of a bold re-think of the current layout of the town centre and look forward to working with Opportunity Sutton to driving change forward in partnership with the town’s business community.
”
The masterplan will complement planned improvements to the ‘northern gateway’ to Sutton High Street.
Businesses were asked for their views on how to improve the look and feel of the northern end of the high street between Marshall’s Road and Benhill Avenue and around Asda as part of a public consultation. It comes after £500,000 government funding was secured to regenerate the area.
What is a BID? A BID (Business Improvement District) is a business-led and funded partnership created to deliver additional services to businesses within a defined commercial area. In our case, the BID operates in Sutton High Street. Once a BID has been established by a majority vote, companies are legally bound to pay a surcharge on their business rates each year. The levy is used to develop projects that will directly benefit businesses from street cleaning, providing security, making capital improvements, events and marketing. In Sutton, the levy is currently 1.05% on all businesses within the BID area that have a rateable value above £10,000. Businesses below that threshold can pay a voluntary annual levy of £100. Successful Sutton was established in October 2012 and runs until October 2017. As a BID we invest money in activities and services to promote and improve Sutton, and we strive to secure best value for you, our levy payers. Our responsibilities are divided into four themes or sub-groups: Enhancing Sutton, Delivering Value, Protecting Sutton and Brighter Sutton.

What is Enjoy Sutton? Enjoy Sutton is our promotions brand for the town centre. We actively promote Sutton by running regular marketing and social media campaigns, competitions, high street events and community initiatives. As a destination brand, we are committed to raising Sutton’s profile as a great place to shop, dine, work and live. All Enjoy Sutton events and activities are exclusive to the town centre and are funded by Successful Sutton.
Ensuring the town centre remains safe and secure Delivering value for money for business levy payers Ross Feeney, chief executive of Successful Sutton, said: “We have made significant progress towards meeting our pledges and have scored a number of notable successes over the past three years. “The road ahead is an exciting one. We will continue to build on our achievements and work with partners and businesses to ensure the future growth and prosperity of Sutton town centre.”

BID Levy Invoices for the annual BID levy have now been issued. The levy is mandatory for all eligible businesses, those with a rateable value of £10,000 or above, within the business improvement district. It is collected annually by Sutton Council and passed to Successful Sutton for use on the projects and services set out in our BID proposal.

Mixed Recycling
SHOP WATCH Sign up to Sutton’s Shop Watch scheme and help keep the town centre safe. Retailers in the BID area and the police meet monthly to share information, intelligence and best practice in areas such as retail crime and antisocial behaviour. The meetings are also an opportunity to raise any crime and safety concerns. Shop Watch ties in with the existing Radio Scheme, which provides BID area retailers and the police with a direct radio link to quickly report incidents and share information.
Levy payers using our free mixed recycling service have collectively saved 160 tonnes of waste from going into landfill. The amount of waste sent for recycling has gone up steadily since the scheme was introduced in June 2013, with our delivery partner, First Mile. And the number of levy payers using the service has doubled in its second year of operation and now stands at 80. More than 100 tonnes of waste was collected from participating businesses between August 2014 and July 2015, saving 145 tonnes of CO2, according to figures published by First Mile. What’s more, all of the waste collected was recycled. Items include cardboard, paper, mixed cans, plastic and glass as well as food waste. Latest figures show that on average 7 to 9 tonnes of mixed recycling is collected monthly with seven new businesses signing up in July alone. As well as supporting council-led initiatives to increase recycling, the free kerbside scheme is helping businesses save money, said Ross Feeney, Successful Sutton’s chief executive. “Our mixed recycling service ensures every levy payer benefits while at the same time ensuring we contribute towards a sustainable economy.
“It is fantastic to see demand and take-up for the service continue to grow and signing up helps your business boost its bottom line. It also diverts a significant amount of recyclable waste from landfill sites.” It’s easy to sign up, simply email info@ successfulsutton.co.uk with the subject line ‘mixed recycling’. We can also have any bulky waste collected. Thanks to our partnership with the Vine Project, large furniture items, white goods or surplus stock can be taken away free of charge. Call 020 8770 3170 to arrange a collection.

Meetings are held on the last Thursday of each month at the Successful Sutton offices. Retailers joining the free scheme are given window stickers bearing the Shop Watch logo to use in retail unit windows as a crime deterrent. To receive a Shop Watch welcome pack, or register your interest in attending a meeting, email shopwatch@successfulsutton.co.uk
Rapid Response Service Do you know that the BID runs a ‘rapid response’ service to handle urgent cleaning requests on the high street? Our street operations team can be onsite within an hour to tackle reported problems in the town centre, ranging from spillages to overflowing bins. All BID levy payers have access to the free service, which is available between 9am and midday Tuesday to Friday. To report an issue, call the rapid response team on 020 8770 3173 during service operating hours.
Christmas is just around the corner Christmas, dare we say it, is just around the corner. The run-up to the festive season is a crucial time for retailers and with only a few weeks until Sutton’s Christmas lights switch-on - the official start of the countdown to December 25 - it’s time to start planning. Here are some top tips to help you prepare for the rush.
Think ahead
Focus on layout
It might seem early to be thinking about Christmas promotions but planning ahead ensures your business is ready for the rush. Having stock in store early should also mean that come the end of the festive season you are not left with a big surplus. Now is the time to also start thinking about staffing cover for the busy Christmas trading period.
Take a close look at the way your shop is laid out. Think about how shoppers will navigate the store when it is busy. Will they be able to easily find the items that they want? Do you need to create more space? Now is the time to address those questions and also to look at placing impulse purchase items by the doors to entice people inside.
Spruce up your premises
Cross-selling
Shopfronts and interiors sell your business. As Christmas approaches it is a good time to check they are in top condition and decorate your premises in festive fashion. It doesn’t have to be a lavish display, investing in a few well chosen props and accessories can add colour, charm and ambiance.
Christmas is the ideal time to look at opportunities for cross-selling. From cards and wrapping paper to gifts for a stocking, placing these items by the tills can encourage impulse purchases and help drive sales.
Customer service If you want to keep shoppers coming back consistently delivering good customer service is key. Ensure staff know what is expected in terms of service. Little extras, like offering free chocolates or mince pies can add to the shopping experience.
Staffing Many retailers employ extra staff to cover the busy Christmas season. Providing training in advance and keeping staff informed of deals or offers running in store is important. Making sure you have sufficient cover for busy dates - like the Christmas lights switch-on - will help to keep queues moving and not grind everything to a halt.

Liberty X to light up Sutton this Christmas Michelle Heaton of 90s charttopping band Liberty X will hit the plunger to switch-on Sutton’s Christmas lights. Michelle will perform some of Liberty X’s greatest hits, before flicking the switch at 6pm, rounding off an afternoon of free family entertainment. The lights switch-on will start at noon on November 14 with a non-stop programme of live music, seasonal street entertainers and performances by community groups. Popular DJ and radio presenter Mick Brown will be compere for the day, hosting acts on the main stage, but the festivities do not end there. Browse for gifts at our Christmas market, enjoy some festive fare from our food stalls,
“
including a delicious hog roast, or hop on board the Land Train, which will be running free rides along the high street from 12pm to 4pm. Little ones can bring their Christmas wish lists to our FREE Santa’s grotto, where they will be able to meet the man himself before he heads back to the North Pole. And there will be fun activities throughout the day at the St Nicholas Shopping Centre. The climax of the day’s festivities, will be the lights switch-on when the Mayor of Sutton, Councillor Muhammad Sadiq, will join Michelle Heaton on stage to start the countdown. This year’s event promises to be one to remember, said Ross Feeney, Successful Sutton’s chief executive. For more information visit www.enjoysutton.com
We are pulling out all the stops to ensure Sutton’s festive season starts with a bang.

EVENTS ROUNDUP ...
Historic Walking Tours
Sunset Cinema
A record number of people took part in our award-winning historic walking programme this summer.
The ever-popular Sunset Cinema returned for a third consecutive year with free screenings of the family comedy Sister Act and the animated musical Frozen Sing-A-Long.
The walks, led by tour guide Chas Bailey, ran from May to August and those taking part were treated to a fascinating journey through the ages, covering the origins and development of the town from the Domesday Book to the present day. New this year were a popular series of Sunday strolls taking in Sutton’s history, architecture and church walks.
Hundreds attended Sutton’s high street cinema, making the most of the long summer nights to watch the films on the giant screen in August and September.
Country Music Festival Sutton resembled Nashville for a day as the Country Music Festival line-danced its way into town. Shoppers and spectators danced in the high street as they were entertained by a host of top name acts from the country music scene on July 5. Hosted by Ralph Petty, Sutton’s 18th Country Music Festival featured linedancing duo Calico, the three-piece Ray Peters Band and Bob Keeley. This was the second year the festival has returned to the town centre thanks to support from Successful Sutton.
Sutton Live An afternoon of free live music from an eclectic mix of performers entertained Saturday shoppers when Sutton Live returned to the town centre in July. The event featured up-and-coming acts including David Grout, Change Persona and the Sing for Joy choir.

Shopper Shuttle Success! Since it’s launch in December 2013 our shopper shuttle service has been traversing the High Street. With the exception of Sundays, the popular service operates from 9am until 5.30pm come rain or shine. Sponsored by the Post Office, the service now runs from the bottom of the High Street by TaZza Coffee Shop up to Uno Tapas. We estimate that we have carried around 78,000 passengers a year which means a total of approximately 157,248 passengers have used this service since its inception nearly two years ago.
Sutton Crazy for Golf Sutton went crazy for golf this summer with the installation of a pop-up 9-hole course. The mini golf course proved a hit with families and workers with more than 4,800 games played during the month of August. The crazy golf course, which was designed to suit all abilities, was part of a summer of free activities staged by the BID to draw visitors to the town centre.
A high-octane show of tricks and flicks by professional skateboarders and BMX riders from King Ramps wowed the crowds at this year’s Big Event. They performed jaw dropping displays on a giant skate ramp and held workshops between the live demonstrations at Manor Park on September 5. Now in its fifth year, the Big Event is staged by Sutton College with support from Successful Sutton and Sutton Council.
Calling all Sutton champions. We’re looking for volunteers to take part in a unique 12-month project that will help shape the town centre and retail experience for shoppers and visitors. Run by GeoTask, the scheme aims to help retailers understand consumer behaviour using location data collected via a mobile phone app.
Our resident driver Junior has driven around 33,600 miles in the buggy, ably assisted on Monday’s by David our relief driver. Don’t just take our word for it about how popular the service is and how Junior has become a local celebrity, read on;
The app can show how shoppers’ behaviour differs according to factors including time, date and weather, analyse the effectiveness of events and marketing campaigns and understand retailer preferences.
“I am writing to inform you of the excellent service given to myself and my friend on your trolley service in Sutton High Street. We use this service on a regular basis and nothing is too much trouble for him [JUNIOR]. If this wonderful service did not exist we would be unable to shop in Sutton. A big thank you”.
Taking part in the GeoTask panel is easy. Just download the free GeoTask app then take your mobile phone with you whenever you visit the town centre, whether shopping, eating out or visiting the park.
Maureen, Sutton.
“I want to show my appreciation of the shuttle bus provided in Sutton High Street and in particular its driver, JUNIOR. Junior and the shuttle have brought me back to Sutton to shop because the slope is too much for me now I’m a senior citizen. It’s a very popular service for us oldies and the shuttle is always full, both ways. Long may it continue and long may Junior be the driver. It’s good to be back shopping in Sutton”. Margaret, Sutton.
Sutton College Big Event
Help shape Sutton’s future
“I am writing to you with regard to the shuttle service provided in Sutton High Street of which I use on a regular basis. I very much appreciate this service as it enables me to visit the shops as I am now in my senior years. He always appears affable and attentive in his duties towards myself and fellow passengers. I sincerely hope that this service continues into the future. It is of great help to people that are less mobile but still want to get up and down the High Street without finding it too tiring due to Sutton being on a steep hill”. Sylvia, Sutton
The app tracks your ‘consumer journey’ and the research will help shape and improve the experience offered to shoppers and visitors to Sutton. All the data is collected anonymously and is not disclosed to third parties. To find out more, visit www.successfulsutton.co.uk
“We want to make Sutton a cultural hub” In June 2015, Sutton Theatres Trust, a non-profit company limited by guarantee, took over management of Sutton Theatres from the London Borough of Sutton Council. Sutton Theatres comprises The Secombe in Sutton and The Cryer in Carshalton, as well as a newly branded performance space ‘Back Door @ The Secombe’.
Beri Juraic, director of Sutton Theatres noted: “We aim to bring a programme that entertains, inspires and challenges. We believe there is so much potential in these spaces and we are working hard to bring them to life for the people of Sutton. Our vision is that we can revive these great regional theatres to help make Sutton a cultural hub within greater London. We plan to build partnerships and collaborations over time with local businesses, schools, interest groups and audiences so that we can connect with and be relevant to all the different voices and communities living within Sutton and its surrounding areas.” Sutton Theatres announced their Autumn/ Winter 2015 season in early August, the programme combines in-house productions with world-class contemporary theatre and performance received from the UK and beyond, together with exciting local talent and community drama. Season highlights include headline comedians such as Tim Vine, Katherine Ryan, Rich Hall and Jason Byrne; the ‘Marhaba Maghreb’ (‘Welcome North Africa’) Festival, featuring some of the most exciting North African performers today, including the UK premiere of ‘Plastic’ by award-winning theatre-maker Meher Awachri, a co-production with ‘Dancing on the Edge’ Festival from Amsterdam and Italian Teatre Mediterraneo Occupato, as well as the UK premiere of Cie Hervé Koubi’s ‘What the Day owes to the Night’, previously
performed at the Bolshoi Ballet and in New York where the performances were sold out. In December, as Christmas bells begin to jingle, there is the unmissable pantomime of ‘Pinocchio’, written by Micha Colombo, directed by award-winning Peter Darney and featuring Eastenders star Melissa Suffield.
There is a wide range of evening entertainment at ‘Back Door @ The Secombe’, a newly branded space, including gigs, cabaret, burlesque and much more. So whether it’s an office trip with colleagues, a date night or a trip out with friends and family, there’s no excuse not to have a good time!
Throughout the rest of 2015, there are over 120 performances by companies from throughout the UK, Europe and Australasia. From visually stunning children’s shows such as Little Dog Barking’s puppetry piece ‘Death, Duck and the Tulip’ to Theatrical Niche’s Commedia del’Arte version of ‘Tartuffe’ or The Rose Kingston’s hilarious history ‘My Kingdom is a Horse’.
Over the summer, both venues enjoyed their first wave of refurbishments, including a revamped foyer space at The Secombe with comfy seating and a fresh modern look, improved bar facilities including draught lager at both sites and a brand new popup bar at The Cryer, and improved box office facilities so that cards are now fully accepted and public wifi will be coming soon.
