Leadership Lines By Stephanie Oliver, Strategic Development Chair

W

ho knew the strategic plan could be so much fun! On the heels of our National President coming to speak about the AJLI Road Map, the Board has been hard at work on our very own Road Map. Every 3-5 years (5 years in our case), your Board puts together a long term plan for the League. It is an exciting year to be on the Board--knowing you have input and can make an impact five years down the road. More important than being on the Board is being a part of the League, which actually carries out the mission, the goals, and ensures we follow the Road Map to eventually arrive at our destination. One thing I have seen and heard from the Board as they put together the goals for the council they represent, is that they have reached out to their committees and chairs to get feedback and ideas. That is really what our Board is about: serving as a collective voice on the League’s behalf to continue making strides forward. Make sure you know which Board member represents you; make sure you let them know things you see and hear going on; make sure they know your ideas of ways to improve the League. Whether you are a member that rolls up her sleeves and is at every project or whether you sit on the back row quietly taking everything in, we need your input to continually improve our organization. We are a strong organization not because of the eleven Board members. We are a strong organization because of the 100 plus women who make a difference in the community. The Board has

been hard at work to have our long term plan finalized by May, so if you have input, reach out to any Board member and let us hear what you have to say. You are the hands and feet that carry out our Strategic Plan and we want to be sure we’re all traveling down the same road together! We look forward to hearing your thoughts and ideas for the future of our League.

Stephanie Oliver

The Junior League Prayer We pray that we will never be so blind That our small world is all we ever see, Or so supremely satisfied, That what we are is all we ever want to be. Give us the joy of feeling someone’s need, Make us gracious followers; Make gracious those who lead. And more than all, We pray that through the years we will remember that there are always new frontiers.

March Speaker By Allyson Langson, President

T

he Junior League of Lufkin is absolutely delighted to welcome the President of AJLI, Delly Beekman, to Lufkin on Wednesday, March 2. She will be presenting the AJLI Strategic Road Map Initiative to all of our members – Provisionals, Actives, and Sustainers – at 7 p.m. on the 2nd at Crown Colony Country Club. There will be a social hour prior to the meeting, from 6 to 7 p.m. to allow our members to meet and interact with Mrs. Beekman. We do hope that all of our members will be able to attend and meet this inspirational leader of today’s AJLI. Delly Beekman, an Active member of the Junior League of Monmouth County, New Jersey, for thirty-three years, has served in several AJLI leadership positions. Her role as President of AJLI started in June 2010 and she will serve through May 2012. As President of her League, she created a climate for organizational change and currently advocates with NJ SPAC. Delly serves on the Boards of Family & Children’s Service, where she was President, and the Children’s Research Triangle, Chicago. She was on the Nominating Committee and Board of the Monmouth Council of Girls Scouts. Delly strives to build strong relationships towards creating healthy organizations and productive teams. She and her husband, Peter, live in Rumson, New Jersey, and have four children.

Allyson Langston

The following article that describes Delly’s vision for AJLI was published in the Wall Street Journal on June 18, 2010. “Junior League Takes the Gloves Off” By SHELLY BANJO New Jersey native Delly Beekman has one message for female volunteers: This isn’t your mother’s charity anymore. The newly elected board president is trying to turn the centuryold Association of Junior Leagues International from a pearlsand-white-glove social organization into a powerful women’s movement. After losing a fifth of its members in a decade, the

Simple Chicken Sandwich

organization has decided to retool to remain financially viable and, perhaps more importantly, relevant to the next generation of female volunteers. It has reframed its mission to focus on encouraging women to be civic leaders and have an impact on their communities. After 100 years, the group is planning to change the way the organization recruits, retains and serves members. “Members are our most important resource, both in advocating for the issues the group cares about and generating the bulk of the organization’s revenues,” Ms. Beekman said. Local chapter membership dues can range from $75 to several hundred dollars a year, including a $35 fee for international dues. The Junior Leagues began in 1901 in New York City and today includes nearly 300 membership leagues throughout America, Canada, Mexico, and the U.K. It has been known for attracting influential women such as former Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court Sandra Day O’Connor, first ladies Eleanor Roosevelt, Barbara Bush and Betty Ford and actress Katherine Hepburn. The organization helped create a model for the Red Cross Motor Corps, helped pass the first federal legislation to address domestic violence, and encouraged early childhood immunization. Decades later, the association of leagues has faced a fiercer competitive landscape for volunteering organizations, declining membership and a lack of new recruits, said Ms. Beekman, 60 years old, who lives in Rumson, N.J., and joined the Junior League of Monmouth County in 1977. “The organization hasn’t adapted to the changing needs of women who are working more and have less time to devote to civic service,” she said. “We also have an opportunity to tap into a younger generation of women who have grown up as volunteers.” The first step: “to change our image from what some perceive as an outdated social club,” said Ms. Beekman, who added that she’s received advice from her own 24-year-old daughter, who is joining a local club this year. Ms. Beekman said she wants to transition the Leagues from project-based organizations, where members participate in singular volunteer activities, to issue-based groups, rallying together on issues such as sex-trafficking of women, childhood obesity and education. A number of local leagues have formed political action groups to lobby local and national leaders on these issues. “We’re a solid cadre of influential women and our collective voice is our most powerful asset,” Ms. Beekman said.

Spring Market By Cindy Neal, Spring Market Chairman April 14-16 Spring Market 2011 BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF LUFKIN

I

f you have ever seen the movie, “Under the Tuscan Sun”, then you have probably imagined yourself in that setting at least once or twice. Relaxing with friends, sipping a glass of wine, great music, and shopping make the lifestyle in this movie attractive. This year the Junior League of Lufkin’s 2011 Spring Market hopes to bring you all of those things and more. Planning begins almost immediately after the prior Spring Market ends. Our dedicated committee members have been searching for ways to make this Market a successful fundraiser again this year. New vendors have been included this year that have unique and specialized merchandise along with many of our returning favorites. There should be something for everyone so join us in April and get ready to SHOP, SHOP, and SHOP. Local organizations that make a difference in our community benefit from this annual fundraiser so the support of our League and our deserving community is greatly appreciated.

Cindy Neal

I

am super excited about this year’s market. We should have something for everyone on your shopping list. We have some of our favorites like Simply Sassy and Lauren Lake Gifts returning as well as several new vendors like The Very Thing, Texas Size Bling, and R & R Outfitters. Also, you should be able to find that adorable outfit for your kiddos just in time for Easter since we will have several new children’s clothing and accessories vendors this year. Happy Spring Marketing!

Charity Ball By Lora Huerta, Charity Ball Co-Chairman

T

he 007 Ball weekend began with the “Shaken, not Stirred Pre-Bond Party” and was a fantastic event! It was great to see our Helping Hand Sponsors, Sustainers, Members, Family and Friends out this evening supporting our organization! The food was beautiful again this year. Thank you to all of the wonderful ladies that brought food for the event. The “Buy it Now” options at pre-ball were an exciting addition this year, as well as the beautiful music provided by Chuck Harris. It was a great time and the money raised truly makes a difference to the women and children of Angelina County. The 007 Ball was absolutely gorgeous and began with the rockin’ tunes provided by Louisiana Crossroads. What a great band! Our wonderful meal was created by Texas Custom Catering. It was delicious and the breakfast tacos at the end of the night were brilliant! Thank you for your hard work on our 007 Ball! The evening continued with more great music, dancing, auctions, dice sales, raffle drawings, and more dancing! It was wonderful to see everyone having such a great time, including our committee members who were able to let their hair down a bit after most of the work was done! These ladies were amazing to work with. The hours it takes to make the Charity Ball happen is unbelievable but you were all bright eyed and ready to work each shift. All I can say is thank you, thank you, and thank you!

Sealed with a Kiss!! A funny story about Kathi White – she sold the winning ticket to Melinda Kartye & when she did, she wrote her name on the back of the ticket & kissed it for good luck – and Melinda won the $800 Brookshire Brothers Food & Fuel Gift Certificates! Next year – I want Kathi to kiss my tickets!

Sunday morning brought our sweet provisional class who made fast work of the cleanup. They did a great job and I thank each of you! Our fearless leader for the 007 Ball, Natalie Thornton, was amazing to work with. Her constant focus on being a good steward of the money we spent was genuine and heartfelt. Thank you Natalie for being such a good friend, teacher, and leader. I am ready for 2012! Finally, there are so many League Members, Friends, Sponsors, Dads and Husbands who came to the Civic Center while we were preparing for the ball to offer support, to run errands, to deliver risers, to hang 007 glittery signs, to return risers, and to simply give support and work shifts you weren’t even signed up for. You know who you are and you are wonderful. There isn’t enough space in Our View to tell you how much we love you and appreciate your support. So what’s next?? Spring Market!! Get ready everyone, it is going to be a wonderful weekend! Good luck Cindy, Kim, Melissa and the rest of the committee. It will be awesome! Then after that, Charity Ball 2012 , here we come!!

A Word of Advice By Tara Watson Watkins

O

ne of the most precious gifts that I ever received was from my sweet Daddy. I knew at a young age that my Daddy would most likely not be around to see my children born and tell them all of his stories. Back in 2000, I gave my Dad a journal and asked him to write down all of his childhood memories, medical school stories, years in the Navy, etc. He thought it was a great idea but had quite a hard time starting it. I remember receiving a call from him one day, while living in Dallas, and he was so proud to tell me that he had written his first story and was now on a roll! I could not wait to get home, sit in his study with a cup of hot tea and read what he had written. What I found was unbelievable. Here I thought I had given him a gift but in reality, he gave me the most precious gift that I will ever receive. I have his stories-- in his handwriting. He wrote stories of me growing up, stories of his brothers and sisters, stories of how he figured out that he wanted to become a doctor while helping with anesthesia onboard ship during the Korean War. It’s amazing; I can hear him in my head when I read the journal. I hear him laughing and can picture his sweet smile with the little tilt of his head. I can feel his love in those stories. So here’s my advice, whether you are sentimental or not ask those you love to tell their stories. Get your parents to write down

their memories. Tape record or video record your grandparents telling about their childhood and hold tight to those memories. I recently saw a cute movie called Leap Year. In the movie they ask the question, “What would you grab if your house caught fire and you had 60 seconds to grab anything you wanted.” Think about it…what would you grab? I know exactly what I would grab. My Daddy’s journal, my Grandmother’s bible that she read every day, a book of letters that was given to me after my journey as Miss Texas from all of the places and people that I talked to and met along the way. I would probably try for a few other things but those are the things I know without a doubt I would grab!

Relay for Life By Susan Harris, Simply Done Chairman

I hate cancer

C

ancer took my mom from me in 2002, and many friends and family members have been unfortunately touched by cancer as well. Since then I have vowed to stay involved in Relay For Life somehow every year. It’s time that we get our team together for RFL, which will be held Friday, May 6, 2011 at LMS stadium. In the past 2 years over 1/2 million dollars has been raised in Angelina County through Relay For Life for the fight against cancer. Last year our Relay had a record number of teams involved...95 teams! The goal this year is 100 teams, which I think can definitely be done. This year’s What is the Junior League going to do for Relay, you may ask? We are again having a team. JLL team This means I need 10-15 ladies signed up and raising money for our team. Take a Time Out

... Slow down and change the light bulb By Jennifer McCall It is cold and flu season! If your household has been like mine this past month, then those words bring something just short of a nightmare to mind! For us, it started with Mattie for a week and then migrated to me for two weeks and then on to Whit. The timing of this cootie attack in our home was basically disastrous. I had just started a new job the week before it hit, we were moving to a new home, the kiddos were in the last weeks of prepping for UIL, DI, and an important swim meet, and the pipes needed wrapping and plants covered as the whole town froze up for a few days. We are so used to running at 110% that it really was against the grain to stop and slow down when we felt the first scratchy tickle in our throats. Then, when we finally did slow down it was too late and we were completely over run with cooties and completely all wiped out. In hind sight, there were so many things I should have done differently those first few days after that scratchy tickle showed up in our home. However, I chose to attack the bigger issues on my list instead and then for me the tickle turned into Laryngitis, which turned into Sinusitis, which turned into Bronchitis just in time for the Flu to hit. There are a few days in there when I was at my worst and I am not real clear how I got the kids to school or how they ate – but they assure me they did! I do recall one night when I virtually tucked them in at night by calling their cell phones with my laryngitis voice, whispering prayers and telling them what I would be doing to tuck them in if I could get out of bed. I had never before had such a prolonged episode of dilapidating cooties. After awhile I started running out of provisions, food, and gas and even washing my hair sounded impossible. Friends were more than willing to help, but in this case, I was even too wiped out to pick up the phone or to even know what I needed to ask for. For the first time in my life I truly felt a slice of what people with chronic pain or illness must experience. My heart is filled with a new level of compassion for people in those situations. While my cooties passed, other less fortunate people must live with those conditions indefinitely and I have accidently found a new cause to be passionate about. I will be looking for ways to help others that are too ill to even know what to ask for. Now that I am on the other side of this and I can smile at the sunshine again, tuck my children in bed, cook, shop, work, get gas, and wash my hair, it is time for me to reflect on what I learned from that disastrous month long episode. Aside from having a

deeper compassion for the chronically ill; my lesson is that sometimes you simply have to SLOW DOWN – before disaster hits. This does not just apply to how we react to the first scratchy tickle in our throats at the onset of a cold – but how we approach other life challenges as well. It has been my nature to push through any challenge full speed ahead in a triage type manner fixing the most pressing issue first. Now I am going to try something new…to SLOW DOWN before I push through the challenge. It may be a silly analogy but this made me think of the light bulb that went out in my coat closet about 4 months ago. I still have not switched it out; yet it bugs me twice a week when I can’t see in there to get something I need. That bulb has not gotten enough of my attention; it is just a scratchy tickle. Yet, if I would just stop long enough to change it then I would not have to be frustrated twice a week for months. There are likely places in our various relationships that are like this too and it is perhaps easier to have that scratchy tickle a couple times a week rather than slow down enough to fix it – or maybe our relationship with God, or an issue at work, or simply a junk drawer in our kitchen that is overflowing. Sometimes you have to slow down in order to push through. We are all so busy and our lives are all filled with “To Do” lists. We usually tend to take care of the obvious issues first leaving little time to tend to the scratchy tickles. Our lives would be so much more purposeful with fewer disasters if we could slow down a little and think about how we really prioritize our “To Do” list. So this month I challenge you to take a time out to give some attention to those scratchy tickles in your life. Now that this cootie disaster has passed in our household - I personally will be getting out the ladder this afternoon and spending five minutes to change the light bulb! Now I will be able to see what I need in that closet this week - even if I am moving soon! Love,

Jennifer McCall

Provisional News

T

By Susan Childers, Provisional Chair

he Junior League of Lufkin Provisional Class is doing great! This group of women has already outdone themselves by volunteering for Vision Screening, Super Saturday, Family Night and more. They’re working their way through all the fun requirements, including Charity Ball Clean-Up! This class alone sold over $4,000 in Charity Ball raffle tickets – that’s an average of more than $200 per provisional and only half of them were required to sell for Charity Ball! I know they’re looking forward to the Spring. They’ll be working hard to help out at the next Family Night and Spring Market. Then it will be time for the Career Conference, Sustainer Skit and before you know it, they’ll be finishing up their requirements with a bang at the Back to School Bonanza!

A few provisionals shared their experience so far: “Junior League has been far more rewarding than I imagined. My initial perception of the League was that it’s a “sorority for grown-ups”, and while the social aspect is certainly there, it’s so much more. My most rewarding experience thus far was volunteering at Family Night. The families were so appreciative and made all of us remember how fortunate we are.” “I have learned more about my community in the last few months in The Junior League than I have in the past several years living here!” “One of my favorite memories in Junior League so far is vision screening. I joined JLL for the volunteer aspect. Discovering

that a child needs glasses and knowing that will improve their school experience is so rewarding! It is easy to get wrapped up in our own world and to forget how much other people need our help.” “First memorable impressions of JLL – meeting new women who are dedicated to helping others while having fun.” “Being a provisional member is great in many ways – meeting new friends, volunteering in the community, learning about the League. I’m inspired by the women who are such close friends because of The Junior League – yet might not even know each other otherwise.”

The next time you see a provisional, give them a pat on the back!
