PRE SI DE NT'S O F F I CE ust like a newborn baby, in the beginning there were many sleepless nights. All nighters. Learning to walk and talk. Crazy, controlling, helicopter momma moments. Fast forward eleven years and we are here. My baby has grown up. Eleven years old. Starting a publication has had many awesome highs along with many, many learning experiences. It's wild and crazy to reflect back on the last eleven years. I am thankful for everything the Lord has put on my plate. This experience has been a fabulous journey. I have met many amazing people along the way, some complete strangers who have become family. Their inspiring stories remind us all of how good the Lord is and what makes East Texas great. As we celebrate 11 years, we also celebrate summer! Timing couldn't be any better. My family is my lifeblood. Of course, by the end of summer, I may be singing a different tune. But for now, being home and having simple days are my favorite. The simplicity of sharing time together, a lot of laughter, and creating life long memories is what we enjoy most.
As you create your summer memories and anniversary landmarksremember there is so much joy in simplicity. Not everything needs planning, preparation and big to do's-KEEP THINGS SIMPLE AND ENJOY THE BEAUTY RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU.

LIFE ON THE
B U RLAP & B E STI E S
A trip to Waco for a wedding meant I had a great excuse to go to Magnolia Market! I don’t get to regularly watch Fixer Upper. I only have Netf lix, which is similar to living under a rock sometimes, so I’ve only seen pictures of the finished store on Instagram and a few shows with it in progress. However, I knew this store would be great and I needed to experience it in person! What I did not expect was to be blown away by it! The beauty, the kind staff, the atmosphere, and all the fun had us not wanting to leave! As we were driving and the silos came into view, I immediately began to get a little excited. Then I saw the store front in its simple white and black style and got super excited that I was really here! It looked even better in real life than what I had seen in pictures. (I was secretly worried that I had my hopes too high and would be disappointed.) There wasn’t even a line outside to get in, added bonus! You definitely want to go to the store on a week day to avoid crowds and really get to see and enjoy everything. Walking up to the store you can see your own excitement ref lected in the faces of the other visitors with everyone stopping for pictures and offering to help one another get that “perfect shot” with the trade mark sign and silos in the background. Workers of the store can be found everywhere. Even in the rain, they are standing with adorable Magnolia umbrellas to greet you and offer up any help needed. The store itself is so much larger than I thought it would be and the merchandise is arranged just perfectly. I was very impressed by the prices of their super soft t-shirts! The checkout
MAGNOLIA MARKET - Take your camera! - Stash away money to spend - Go on a weekday to avoid crowds

process was incredibly fast, with two different checkout counters, numerous registers, and two checkers at each register to help the process go quickly. After checking out I found my boys outside playing in front of the silos where they have a large astroturf area with an assortment of balls and games to play! There are also several large wooden swings that you can sit or stand on. Hats off to Chip and Jo Jo for this well played move to keep all family members happy when visiting their store! In addition to areas to run and play, there was also a line of food trucks with lots of covered picnic tables to sit and eat, as well as family friendly music being played both in and outside of the store. My advice is don’t stop to eat or stretch your legs on the way, just wait until you arrive, because I guarantee that you are going to want any excuse to stay there as long as you can! In addition to the main store there is another small store past the silos, don’t skip it! It had some items that were not in the main store! As an added bonus, you get to see a few goats and some small, but beautiful, herb and vegetable gardens. All in all, this was far more than a store. It was a great experience for each member of our family and it was full of good ‘ole Texas charm. I look forward to many more trips to Magnolia Market and the Silos, and I think my boys do too, considering I had to drag them off the astroturf. My husband even left with a logo tee of his own!

KEEP FOOD SIMPLE FOR AN OUTDOOR GATHERING Finger foods, fresh salads, fruit and cold beverages are all great outdoor entertaining ideas.
OUTDOOR
E N T E R TAI N I NG T IPS A successful dinner party doesn't have to be elaborate. Simple food, good company and a nice setting will make for a memorable experience for family and friends.
CONSIDER LIGHTING At sunset, make sure you provide plenty of lighting. Lanterns are a f lexible option for additional outdoor lighting.

ENSURE THAT GUESTS ARE HYDRATED Because the weather is warmer, guests will appreciate drink options that are easily accessible.

DETERMINE THE FORMALITY OF THE PARTY Usually when a party takes place outdoors, it is much more relaxed and casual than an indoor dinner party. Opt for an eclectic mix of dinnerware and decor to set the casual mood.

I started cooking in the kitchen when I was very little. It started with my dad and both grandmothers teaching me to how to make homemade biscuits, homemade cornbread, greens, and homemade mac n cheese. They taught me how to measure out ingredients with my hands and with my sight. So cooking gives me the freedom to put ingredients together in many different ways.

USE GARDEN SOI L IN YOUR POTTED P LANT.
USE A PLANT NANNY !
Your plant will die. Potted plants need to be able to breath and the soil must drain well. Remember potting soil and Color Star fertilizer only available at Crown of Thorns Nursery is always best.
Need help remembering to water? Add a Plant Nanny and no watering will be needed in most containers for 4-5 days or possibly more depending on placement/sun exposure. Using a Plant Nanny water seeps out of the terra cotta stake and slowly keeps the roots moist.

Potting soil is very important to the success of a container plant as well as fertilizer. We use Color Star fertilizer. It's made in Bellville and we are the ONLY supplier in East Texas. It will make your plants bloom like crazy!
Watering in the morning is best so that foliage will dry early and quickly minimize the risk for disease. Raising your flower bed is key to having success in your landscaping. Most plants need well drained soil, although they need water, they don't do well staying damp.
If you have plants that are growing out of control, don't hesitate to prune them back. Use proper trimming clippers and cut back at joints. By trimming your plants it promotes new, healthy growth.

Mulch, pine straw or chopped up leaves in flower beds help to hold in moisture around your plants. When mulching, make sure you use 2"-3" of product to get the benefit.

AT THE
BLUE HOLE The best kept secret in East Texas. Actually, it cannot be that great of a secret because the landowners say they have handed out over 300 trespassing tickets. What many people may not know is how and why the Blue Hole ever came to be. There was a little construction project many moons ago known as the Galveston Seawall. The closest place with rock was Angelina and Jasper County. According to a historian, the man that dug the rock was Mr. Townsend, Bubba Shands' grandfather. The man overseeing the Galveston seawall construction job was named Henderson. Two of the men
later relocated to East Texas and began working in the timber business. A couple of the others got into the banking business and cotton business. Digging the rock from Angelina County and transferring to Galveston was no small task. The rocks had to be hauled out by wagon and pulled by oxen’s to the railroad by Bouton Lake. Then it was hauled to Galveston by train. Today, four shareholders privately hold the Blue Hole. It is still one of the most majestic locations in all of Texas.

FAMILY TOGETHER TIME! There is no better way to spend time as a family than volunteering. The hours and days pass by so quickly. These times will be the ones your family and kids will remember years down the road. You do not have to go across the ocean or to a remote country to do mission work. You can stay right here at home. This summer, Habitat for Humanity will be working on a home at 1710 Culverhouse. Every Saturday, individuals from churches, businesses, and volunteer organizations can help construct a home for a local family in need. As
a non-profit organization, they rely solely on donations for materials, labor, and monies from businesses, organizations, and individuals in our community. Shelby Havard says, "It is only through community support that we have been able to successfully build homes for so many families in need. In order to better serve the community, we would love to expand our volunteer and donor groups. We are constantly partnering with churches, businesses, and other organizations in the community and would love to connect with as many people as possible."
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY IS CELEBRATING THEIR 20TH YEAR OF SERVICE TO OUR COMMUNITY.
28 | S U M M E R S P L A S H 2 0 1 6
During the 20 years of service, 18 families have benefitted from the safe and affordable homes.
Havard says, "You cannot help but feel emotional when you are able to watch a father who grew up in poverty work hard to provide a safe home for his wife and children. Without Habitat for Humanity, we know many of our partner families would still be struggling. We are honored to be able to provide financial counseling, emotional support, and safe and affordable housing to individuals who are working hard to make their lives better."
If you are interested in scheduling a workday for yourself or a group, you may email us at habitatinfo2@hfhac.com or call us at 632-8445. You can also like our Facebook page, Habitat for Humanity of Angelina County, to stay updated on the exciting things we are doing.

CHEMICAL PEELS Dead skin cell buildup, hyperpigmentation (brown spots) and those sweat induced breakouts. Soud familiar? A few options to combat these issues are microdermabrasion, light chemical peels, peel alternatives, masques and target treatments. Some even take advantage of summer chemical peels that are lighter in concentration or peel alternatives with no downtime. It will freshen up the skin, unclog pores and slough off that old winter skin with little to no physical peeling. The lighter peels have great anti-aging benefits as well. Regardless of what type of chemical peels, SPF is a must!
Lightweight coverage, SPF, water-based and extra-hydrating so it won’t cake on your skin. Ultra-fine, weightless-feeling, sheer coverage.
THERE'S NO SHAME IN A TR ADITIONAL SKIN CARE REGIMEN GAME. You may have your favorite products, but your skin might actually benefit from a seasonal switch. As the temperature and humidity rise you are going to be dealing with excess oil, clogged pores, and deadskin-cell backlog from the winter months. This pileup of dead skin cells dulls the skin, limits moisture absorption needed in the summer months and leaves your skin lacking luster.
Light & appropriate for summer
TINTED SUNSCREEN & BB CREAMS While winter skin usually needs more moisture, thick formulas can cause caking and creasing in your makeup under the summer heat. Try switching from heavy creams or thick liquid foundations to serums and a lighter coverage foundation. One great option is to use a moisturizing broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher to replace a heavier moisturizer, that you can finish off with a
50 | S U M M E R S P L A S H 2 0 1 6
light powder foundation. This will reduce both SPF and a moisturizer to one simple, light product that you can finish off with a light powder foundation or BB cream. Another option is a tinted sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and a hydrating serum to replace your foundation and moisturizer giving you a light, clean, dewy appearance.
Summer skin requires protection from sun rays while achiev ing and maintaining a healthy appearance. We have all heard of UVA & UVB rays, but what are they and how do they affect my sk in? U VA rays are associated w it h sun da mage, sun spot s, wrinkles and increased risk of melanoma, while
U VB rays give us a sunburn. Overexposure to either can damage the skin which is why both UVA and UVB protection are important. In your facial products or makeup, look fo r specif ic ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to ensure broad-spectrum UV protection.
Tinted, micronized 21% zinc oxide for true physical UVA/ UVB sun protection and blends to the skin’s natural tones.
We want that summer glow but not that greasy shine. It's not just the face we are talking about either. The upper back is especially prone to perspiration, making it prime breakout territory. Choose a facial and body wash with ingredients like benzoyl peroxide
and salicylic acid that help kill bacteria and unblock pores. Selecting an appropriate moisturizer to nourish the skin with proper hydration is essential to healthy, clear, summer skin.
Lightweight moisturizert with SPF 20. Improves skin's overall appearance and provides lasting hydration without oiliness or heaviness.
Water resistant. Protects your skin from UVA/UVB rays with this luxurious physical SPF tinted to blend with most skin tones while perfecting like a primer.

“May he kiss me with the kisses of his mouth! For your love is better than wine.” Songs 1:2
Regretfully, I can’t say it was my first ‘first kiss’. Nor was it my last first kiss (by a long shot). Way too young for kissing hairylegged boys, at least I can say it was my first good first kiss. It was eighth grade summer. My friends and I roamed our little Texas hometown with sun tans, mosquito bites, and pony tails with lemon juice highlights. Summertime girls running too fast toward womanhood. His name was Sam. I don’t remember the date, the clothes I wore, not even the events of the day. Oh, but I still recall with cinematic high definition on the order of Spielberg’s Goonies the moment my world stopped spinning. Even the approaching summer thunderstorm hushed to watch. We stood in my backyard. It was getting dark. He kissed my forehead, then my cheek. He, in that Ocean Pacific tank showing off tan shoulders, bent to kiss my neck next. Finally, he got a gentle taste of my strawberry Kissing Koolers covered lips. This guy had game for a freshman. I crushed on him for a solid semester, so when his mouth locked over mine, it was pure miracle my knees held. I’d forgotten to breathe
until Mother Nature wagged a thunderous finger at us. “I have to go inside.” My flips flopped on the brick steps of the back porch. The screen door slammed behind me, and I stole one last glance at him, by way of lightening flash, hopping the fence. I barely made it across the street to my best friend’s bedroom before the storm hit full force. I told her the details of my love story while hail pounded a steady beat to match my throbbing heart and howling winds squealed as I swooned--love drunk-onto her water bed. “ Summer days drifting away. But, uh oh,
those summer nights...” --Olivia Newton John I guess it should come as little surprise that a girl of Generation X has a thing for good kisses. We didn’t have kissy face emojis on smart phones back then. But we rocked the XoXo on folded notes. What is it about a first kiss that pauses the fast forward of life? Why does it have the power to present a still shot of feelings decades old?
54 | S U M M E R S P L A S H 2 0 1 6
More than most, I get the theolog y of saving those moments for ‘the one’ one will spend life with until death does part. Even almost thirty years later, my husband won’t love this recollection in black and white on a page, or in living color in my memory. Further, you bet I use my own mistakes to encourage my teen-aged daughter not to arouse or awaken love with no hairy-legged boys. She is worthy of waiting on a great and meaningful love story in her ever after on this earth, and I tell her so often. But...sorry, I’m not sorry. Even still, I feel a whole bunch of redeemed excitement for that sun tanned girl of the 80s. A summer kiss gave her a sweet taste of lifelong longing for perfect Love. Even if she won’t know how to label it such until He heals her broken heart twenty years later. While we, as followers of Jesus, should seek the Lord to live out His perfect plan in our choices and actions this side of heaven, the thing is: Life is messy. Kissed for the first time on your wedding day, kissed for the first time

by a legion of hairy-legged boys, or fill in your blank here, we screw up all the time in all kinds of ways. Behind every time you missed the mark is a fundamental longing missing its fulfillment. We are all a big gaping need searching for a sole source of soul satisfaction. For every fall, there is an opportunity to repent and learn something more of a Love who wants to heal the wounds that sent us to other sources.
Take me away with you--let us hurry! Let the king bring me into his chambers. We rejoice and delight in you; we will praise your love more than wine. How right they are to adore you! Songs 1:4
There exists a realm beyond our physical flesh, a reality outside our day in and out, a reason past our human understanding. There is a perfect plan of love for you and me ahead. A Holy Wedding. Our Bridegroom knows just how to redeem the shame of past failures, showing us how we attempted to attain something Holy in unholy ways. Then He moves heaven and earth to make a clear path back to Himself. Yes, God exiled man and woman from Eden’s perfectly planned paradise. With one bite of forbidden fruit, we all fell. However, because of His great mercy, He left us some good things in this lacking world to help us, steer us toward a Holy longing for complete Love found only in His Only Begotten Son.
So this Gen X girl replaced
Juicy sweet fruit of the vine, crystal cool waters, soft curves of woman and hard muscle of Sam--I mean man, laughter that brings tears, eye locks that make hearts pound-- every good and perfect gift comes from above ( James 1:17). Each one desires its eternal ransomed completion. Each calls us back to His heart.
her strawberry Kissing
“Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love.” 1 John 4:18 (NLT)
They simply show us how
Koolers. As a Bride in the current day, His Word is on my lips, His praise in my mouth. Taste and see for yourself (Psalm 34:1, 8). His ways, commandments, and admonitions are not keeping us from pleasure. Oh, no. best to fully imbibe, get w h o l ly

Help repair your hair from the damaging effects of pool water.
1 ripe Avocado
TO USE:
Coconut milk
Apply the above mixture to your wet hair as a conditioning treatment. Wear a shower cap and leave on for 30-90 minutes. Rinse with warm water.
1 tsp Organic Coconut Oil 5 drops Young Living Lavender Essential Oil 5 drops Young Living Rosemary Essential Oil
Cut avocado in half, scoop into a small bowl and mash it. Add Lavender and Rosemary essential oils. Add organic coconut oil. Add enough coconut milk to form a creamy paste. Stir the mixture to blend all ingredients well.
Apply shampoo, then conditioner. Massage conditioner into hair for about 2 minutes and rinse well. Optional: After rinsing hair with warm water, combine one cup of warm water and one cup of distilled white vinegar. Pour mixture over hair and rinse well with warm water.
HINTS & TIPS: Take a shower or wet your hair before hitting the swimming pool. Since your hair is porous, it can absorb less chlorine if it’s already saturated with water.
Wear a swim cap. It will keep your hair from absorbing chlorine and other yucky stuff that is in the pool water.
Add Lavender and Geranium essential oils to your shampoo or conditioner for dry hair.

Four years ago, Linda Williams' journey with Junk Food Junkies began. "In 2012 I began to see God changing many areas of my life. I often refer to my wonderful husband as "the dreamer of the dreams". We've always worked well together and our "work days" have become some of our greatest memories! He can fix anything!" Together the couple bought Nacogdoches Trade Days.

I gained knowledge and decor tips from the photographs and articles that I found joy in reading! That's it!" In 2014, Nacogdoches Trade Days experienced a change. This change created a need. "Our market was in need of funnel cakes! God took one of my husband's dreams, a food truck, and my heart's desire, a vintage trailer and funnel cakes, and this was the beginnings of Junk Food Junkies. I had other ideas

Isiah 55:8 "For my thoughts are not your thoughts; neither are my ways your ways; declares the Lord" Williams began to feel overwhelmed and didn't understand what God was doing through all of this. a life time is to trust God. I've seen God do many things through circumstances that have become my story, things I can not change. However I trust that God is at work and when there is nothing I can do, I surrender all unto Him. Several times throughout this journey I felt as though I couldn't carry on. It was last November that I visibly noticed just how the Lord has carried me. As I began to review the ridiculous amount of photos on my phone, I began to cry. I couldn't believe all the things God had brought me through, where he allowed us to go, and the people we met. I was amazed and he carried me through it all." ROY CARROWAY OWN ER, C ARROWAY FUNERAL HOME One of the greatest commodities our community has is all of the wonderful small business owners that become a part of the heartbeat. That is the case with Carroway Funeral Homes and Roy Carroway. When families are in need of the services of Carroway Funeral Home, it is one of their hardest, challenging moments. Knowing you have someone like Roy to call on in a time of need makes it a lot easier. "I believe in order to make our small business work we have to remain family oriented. We are very careful to treat each family with the utmost compassion, guiding them thru the darkest times of their life. We want each person who walks in to feel comfortable and at home with our large facility and ample parking to accommodate each service." Carroway was raised in the Hudson community with his parents, Roy, Sr. and Carolyn Carroway and his two sisters Julie and Carol. He graduated from Hudson High School in 1982. "I knew when I was in Jr. High that I wanted to become a Funeral Director. I had a strong desire to help families through a difficult time. At age 17, I began working part-time at Gipson Funeral Home. After graduating from Dallas Institute of Funeral Services, I returned to Lufkin where I worked as a Senior Funeral Director for over 14 years. On November 5, 1999, I was able to fulfill my lifetime dream by opening Carroway Funeral Home. Then in February, 2000 I opened a branch in Huntington. Our business has changed dramatically shifting from full traditional funerals to cremation memorial services while other families opt to have visitation and funeral service on the same day. We have strived at Carroway Funeral Home 64 | S U M M E R
to adjust and provide to our families the best service as possible that they desire. My mentor, Elwyn Gipson, advised me when I was in the building stage of CFH to treat and take care of each family the way he had taught me over the years working with him." Roy is an avid outdoorsman, enjoys hunting, fishing, and cooking and spending time with his wife Susie. He is also a member of Lufkin and Gladewater Masonic Lodges, Lufkin Host Lions Club, Angelina County Chamber of Commerce, East Texas Funeral Directors Association, and has served as past Presidemt of ETFDA and past recipient of ETFDA Funeral Director of the Year, Past Board Director for TFDA and Boys and Girls Club and Current Board President with Hospice in the Pines. After running a business for 17 years, there are plenty of memories to look back on. Carroway's first service is one that always stands out in his mind. "One of the very first funerals I directed was a dear family friend. It was in the fall of the year and leaves were deep on the ground. As I made my way over to park the family, a wire was hidden underneath the leaves and I tripped and fell, not once but twice." Once in a lifetime moments are also part of the business. In 2003, CFH was instrumental in assisting NASA with the recovery of the astronauts from the Columbia Space Shutter Disaster. They were also designated as the Emergency Coordinating Center for the funeral homes affected during 2005 Hurricane Rita. God has blessed us in so many ways to be able to reach my life time dream and fulfill a long term goal.

T R AV I S C L A R DY TEXAS STATE REPRESENTATIVE
State officials, Luman family members and friends unveil the sign honoring Bob Luman.
As a state representative, it is always an exciting privilege to welcome guests to our part of East Texas. At the end of April, the Texas Forest Trail Region hosted the Texas Historical Commission’s quarterly meeting in Nacogdoches. Could there be a better time to visit the “oldest town in Texas” than during its Tricentennial Birthday? Judy and I were delighted to host their opening reception at our loft above the red brick streets where we enjoyed pointing out Nacogdoches’ history and interesting features including the El Camino Real de los Tejas, a National Historic Trail, running through downtown Nacogdoches.
Senator Jane Nelson and other state and community leaders tour Rusk State Hospital
Recently, Senator Jane Nelson, Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee traveled to East Texas for a tour of the Rusk State Hospital. Senator Nichols and I, together with Superintendent Brenda Slaton, were honored to welcome her and to discuss with her the vital services provided by Rusk State Hospital. Looking ahead to the next legislative session, I am focused on addressing the underserved mental health needs of East Texas which present a serious challenge to our families, law enforcement agencies, jails, and emergency rooms.
Welcoming the Texas Historical Commission to Nacogdoches
Looking out over the El Camino Real de los Tejas, a National Historic Trail.
On a lighter, musical note, it was a pleasure to honor the contribution of Bob Luman, the legendary country music artist of the 1950s and ‘60s, by designating, through legislation, a segment of Highway 21E as the Bob Luman Memorial Highway. Luman, an honoree of the Rockabilly Hall of Fame and the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame, grew up in the Blackjack community in southeast Nacogdoches County. Melissa Luman- Phillips, Luman’s daughter, a Nashville country western artist like her dad, returned to Nacogdoches for the ceremony and to celebrate her father’s legacy.
It is an honor to represent the people of House District 11, to promote East Texas, and to craft solutions to the challenges that leaders and constituents bring to my attention. My Capitol (512-463-0592) and District (936-560-3982) offices exist to serve you, so please call or email (travis.clardy@house.texas.gov) if we can be of assistance. TRENT ASHBY TEXAS STATE REPRESENTATIVE Update on School Funding
As you may know, on May 13th, the Texas Supreme Court made a decision in the most recent court case regarding public school funding. There were a number of specific issues at stake, but in summary the Supreme Court held that the system was constitutional, but needed changes, saying it was “undeniably imperfect, with immense room for improvement. In response to this ruling, the Texas House has committed to working to improve our school funding system for our children, with House Speaker Joe Straus recently releasing two new interim charges calling the House Public Education committee and the House Appropriations committee, on which I serve, to further investigate ways to improve our schools. Specifically, we will be studying the impacts of Additional State Aid for Tax Relief, or ASATR, which is a hold harmless instituted more than 10 years ago for certain school districts. We will also be looking at the use of local property taxes to fund public education and its effect on educational quality and taxpayers. The Committees will make recommendations to reverse the increasing reliance on recapture payments to fund schools statewide. I look forward to working on this issue, which is one of the most important facing the state. We will be working to find an equitable solution for all schools, especially those in rural Texas which don't always have the same resources available as some urban and suburban districts. House Interim Charges: House Committee on Energy Resources
The House Committee on Energy Resources is a critically important committee for the Texas economy, as it oversees the oil and gas industry, as well as the Railroad Commission of Texas, which regulates the oil and gas sector. The committee will begin the interim by studying the impacts of declining oil prices on the local communities most dependent on oil and gas activity, including impacts on supporting industries. They will then recommend strategies for sustained economic development and workforce growth during times of depressed energy prices. The committee will then work to determine if there are sufficient safety standards in place to protect groundwater contamination from disposal and injection wells, and study the enforcement policies of the Railroad Commission and consider the effectiveness of their methods as a deterrent of violation. As always, please do not hesitate to contact my office if we can help you in any way. My district office may be reached at (936) 634-2762 or you can call my Capitol office at (512) 463-0508.

What pro tours have you been playing and what have you achieved on them? This past year, I played in an assortment of pro tours including Latin American PGA tour, Adams Pro Tour, Northern Texas PGA, Texas State Open and several qualifying schools. Due to my recent Latin American PGA win and other top 20 finishes, I have earned full status as a Latin American player. I also earned invitations to the Canadian PGA tour, and I will be playing in several Canadian events this summer.
SA M FIDON E Sit down and catch up with Sam Fidone. A former Lufkin Panther, Fidone graduated from Southern Methodist University and in 2016 won the PGA Honduras Open.
In addition, I earned enough points on the Northern Texas PGA winter series to be exempt from having to qualify for Texas State Open and earned (6) top 20 finishes on the Adams Pro Tour winter and regular season.
You have been making headlines recently – what is the reason for your success? Becoming successful at competitive golf doesn’t happen overnight. It takes years of preparation and the desire to play the game even when the game beats you up pretty bad. Many people have helped contribute to my growth in the game which I started playing around 9 years old. Recently, I have teamed up with Will Nixon who was on my college golf team at SMU. He has brought confidence and execution to my game. I also work with my former SMU coach, Josh Gregory who has really transformed my practice habits and has given me a different approach to the game. My swing coach, Shaun Webb is the latest addition to the team and he helps fine tune my swing before tournaments.

Some of the tournament proceeds will go to the Lufkin ISD Education Foundation. The community is invited to come out and support the event as well as cheer on our other hometown pro golf players and former Lufkin Panthers. The event also includes a Pro-Am day and if you would like to sign up a team, please contact Len Lentz or Ben Burns at Crown Colony Country Club. It’s a great event which supports education in our community.

SAM F I DO NE
"I would like to 'thank' my Lufkin fans for all their support. Winning means so much more to me when support and love is sent my way from the town in which I represent." - Sam
When will the Latin American PGA Tour end? The tour has eight more events from late August through the first week of December. I will travel to Brazil, Mexico, and Ecuador and many others to compete in the back half of the season.
Can you pick a favorite course you've played? To pick my favorite course is difficult because I have had the opportunity to play on some unbelievable courses. The La Reunion Golf Resort in Antigua, Guatemala was absolutely beautiful with a volcano in the background and visible from any of the 18 holes. The Indura Golf Course in Honduras was also outstanding and is situated on the Pacific Ocean with banana trees and the jungle lining the course. And most seasoned golfers have heard about the Teeth of the Dog in the Dominican Republic - it is ranked as the number
one Caribbean course. Of course, I am partial to Crown Colony since that’s where I cut my teeth in learning the golf game.
The PGA Tour is in your sights. How will you get there? If you play competitive golf, you know the end goal is to get on the PGA tour, but there are multiple tracks to take in order to get there. Since I am playing well on the Latin American PGA tour and will be among the top five on the money list, I will earn status on the Web. com PGA tour. The Web.com PGA tour is one step below the PGA tour. Once you earn your way onto the Web. com PGA tour, the top 25 on the money list will then earn their card to the PGA tour. This is the path I will follow and with some hard work, perseverance and a good dose of patience, I am going to get there - if not this year, then the next. My team and I feel confident that my future in golf is becoming very real.

How did you get where you are today? It takes discipline, training, coaching and a positive attitude to achieve success on any golfing circuit. When I started playing golf, I became instantly hooked on the game. My mom would drive me around all over the state in order to find tournaments for me to compete in. Once I got to high school, I realized I wanted to play college golf, so I went to one of the best swing coaches in the country, Jim Suttie. He taught me the fundamentals of swing and rebuilt my swing in order to make me more consistent. My high school coach, Danny Leatherman taught me what fighting looks like and how to “take it to the course”. Finally, my dad modelled a strong work ethic and advised me and my siblings to never give up on your dream even when you are knocked down time after time.
Realistically, golfers understand the odds of making the PGA tour are really stacked against you. In fact, you’re more likely to win the lottery than making PGA. Nevertheless, if you have the passion for the game and are willing to work for years on improving your skills and are willing to put yourself out there to compete, you will have a shot at it. In regards to knowing when to quit, I think that is up to the individual. For me, I know the time has come when I no longer “want” to go to the course to practice but rather “need” to go to the course to practice. The game is a very difficult game and no one is perfect at it, but if you work hard and work on the right things, I believe anyone can make it. Tell us about your most memorable shot.
Obviously, my last win on the Latin American PGA Tour in Honduras was my biggest career win to date. In order to win, I had to make an eagle on the final hole. It was a 30-foot putt and I made it to win. Now...we heard you broke a putter? At a collegiate tournament my freshman year at SMU, I broke my putter after missing a short putt on the 14th hole, and I had use another club out of my bag to putt the final four holes. On 15th hole – a par 5, I made a 25-foot eagle using my hybrid as a putter. I then made a 15-footer for par on the 17th hole. Despite my success using the hybrid as a putter, my college coach was still mad at me but I didn’t get in too much trouble because he was glad I could improvise and grind it out. How can we follow your success? The Latin American and Canadian PGA tours have live scoreboards on their websites. Otherwise, I would suggest befriending Scott Diggs on Facebook and watch for his posts.

The Crown Colony Junior Golf Program has been around for five years. It started out with one class and has grown to six classes throughout the week. The program’s goal is to reach every child that has a desire to explore and learn the game of golf. Our hope is that they will develop golf skills to use now and later on in life. We give them a chance to have a real club in their hands and a chance to be on the golf course. Age doesn’t matter, anyone can learn the game.
Cory Ryan Crown Colony Country Club 1st Assistant Golf Professional Email: golfcory1369@yahoo.com 936-637-8800
We put an emphasis on having fun. The program is designed to use other games and sports that are familiar to them. Kids in the program will swing pool noodles and throw or toss frisbees, footballs or bean bags before ever really picking up a club. Another activity we do is throwing a bean bag into a hula hoop to practice some beginning golf skills. Too many programs out there force kids straight into lear ning the fundamentals of golf and the programs have a hard time keeping kids who want to continue learning the game.
When teaching kids how to play a game for life, it needs to be fun, relaxing and enjoyable. Too many adults lose that insight of the game while they are playing it and this program is not about that. Crown Colony Junior Golf Program is about growing the game and introducing it to the next generation of golfers. It does not matter if you are five years old, middle school age, a freshman in high school or a college student wanting to find a new hobby. Crown Colony Junior Golf program welcomes you to come out and learn how fun golf can really be.

A product of Nacogdoches High School baseball, Brigham Hill made his mark this year for Texas A&M.
Texas A&M baseball was frequently in the national spotlight all season, teetering back and forth in the NCAA rankings from first to fifth place. In the end, A&M baseball ended their season ranked number one. The season wasn't over. They still had a long way to go. After the season, they had the SEC Tournament knocking at their door. Then, of course, their hope for a trip to Omaha in the college World Series.

at a time and treat every game like it's the most important game because any game, we could be eliminated."
Hill had a great 2016 season all year. He made a landmark appearance during the SEC tournament. "Last year, I did not get to pitch one inning during the tournament." This year, as sophomore, he was used many times throughout the season. One of his highlights was during the SEC tournament, Day 2 game 9 versus South Carolina. "The SEC Tournament is harder than Omaha. You are up against the top teams in the country. All you can do is take one game at a time and treat every game like it's the most important game because at any game we could be eliminated." Hill pitched 7 innings. The Aggies won that game versus South Carolina. They went on to win the SEC championship. Every game I pray before, during and after the game and try to stay as calm and collected as possible.

JARROD ANDERSON IS MAKING HIS MARK IN THE FISHING WORLD "I go to Sam Rayburn probably 4 to 5 days a week. I enjoy fishing and try to stay in touch with pattern of the donkeys!" I have placed very well in a few small club-style tournaments. My partner and I placed 1st in a "Poorman Tournament" where we had 21.18lbs. We had a 9.16lb kicker to secure the win. Three weeks later, Reagan Finnell and I came back to win again with a 3 fish weigh in and our 3 biggest were 16.81lbs. Bayley Roland and I also placed 3rd in a Texas Bass Heads tournament on Rayburn. Reagan Finnell and I also fish for Lufkin Highschool. We recently had two top 20 finishes this year out of 450+ teams which landed us both times in the money.
TIPS FROM THE EXPERT: • I like to throw top water right at daylight or dusk or during low light conditions such as rainy, overcast days. Primarily you will experience bigger bites with topwater fishing. • My big fish usually come from my carolina rig, jig, texas rig or crankbait. In order to catch them you gotta find them first! I've gone to the lake some days just to graph and look for points, brush tops, and ledges that collect up with "donkeys" as I would like to call the big bass. • I have many brush tops marked on my graphs, and I will usually idle on top to see if there is a good amount of fish before I stop to fish it.

As fans of the outdoor product market and living in a culture where the quick/ simple solution is the first resort, we sometimes lose sight of maximizing what God has provided us.
Enhancing your property and habitat can be as simple as maximizing the potential of plants and trees that are already out there. Take a closer look at the plant communities you have and make sure they’re all they can be.
At Nature’s Eye, we often remind ourselves that wildlife are a by-product of their habitat; and thus habitat must be our core focus.

NATIVE BROWSE // WILDLIFE NUTRITION by Emily Courtney with Nature's Eye
Three essential elements make up quality habitat: food, cover, and water.
There are several steps to maximizing the habitat’s potential to provide the best food for your wildlife.
The wildlife that we manage, or more precisely manage habitat for, can only reach their full potential when they have access to the proper nutrition. There are so many products on the market in the outdoor industry aimed towards providing supplemental nutrition for wildlife, just as we have stores full of supplements and protein powders to augment our nutrition. However, most doctors and nutritionists would probably advise that simply eating actual healthy food is a much better option. So it would stand to reason that providing wildlife with healthy food is probably preferable to providing artificial supplements.
Native browse is the absolute best source of nutrition for wildlife, and it’s often overlooked.
KNOW WHAT'S OUT THERE Identification of the species that are present is the first critical step. A full browse count survey and tree species identification provided by a biologist is the foundational component of a vegetation management program. This will help you learn the wildlife beneficial trees and plants on your property, as well as the undesirable species. This knowledge will help determine whether there is a need for supplemental nutrition, which can be a valid part of the equation if the naturally occurring growth is lacking certain nutrients. Knowing the species already growing on your property will also help indicate which types of trees and plants can thrive on your particular piece of ground. It will not only show you what’s there, but what could be there. This is also a way to identify most productive areas to concentrate effort on for fertilizing and food plots. This will set the stage for a prescription to unlock your habitat’s full potential.
ELIMINATE THE WORST This category often consists of exotic species and those that provide low wildlife benefit, based on your goals and species you’re managing. Many of these undesirable species are invasive or are known for outcompeting quality vegetation. Most are also pioneer species, which are the first plants to invade a new site after clearing or mowing. There are also many invasive species that are not exotic, such as sweetgum and maple. The methods used for removal of these undesirables are known collectively as timber stand improvement (TSI). TSI can be categorized as either mechanical (removal with equipment) or chemical (herbicide treatments). Consultation with a forester or biologist should be done before any of these methods are applied. The last thing you want to do is eliminate any beneficial species, pointing back to the importance of the initial species I.D.
ENHANCE THE BEST Now that you’ve separated the good from the bad, you can enhance the good. This will now allow the desirable species to absorb more moisture and nutrients and opens up space on the forest floor. You should have a plan in place to capitalize on this by replanting and fertilizing desirables so the undesirables won’t regenerate. Prescribed burning is another quality tool that can promote herbaceous plants. Fire scarifies seeds in the soil bank, promotes new growth, and removes the litter layer to allow sunlight and moisture to the forest floor. Implement a 2-3 year rotation for prescribed burning to keep invasive woody species under control.
MAINTAIN THE REST Maintenance is critical in just about anything. Planted trees have to be sprayed around, fertilized, pruned. Prescribed burning should be performed regularly. The best way to minimize the maintenance that must be done is to establish a quality management plan to implement low maintenance techniques. Planting species that best match your site, planting pest resistant species, and implementing proper planting techniques are just a few ways to keep from having to spend too much time and effort on maintenance. This applies to herbaceous plants, trees, and food plots.
