ocated only a couple miles south of Lufkin is a place that you might only see in a country fairytale. This picturesque red barn and green land is known as Shelton’s Place.
David and Lois Shelton built the then 2400 square foot barn as a place to store their tractors, hay, and tools. However, their family and friends had different intentions. “Family always seemed to ask about ‘borrowing’ the barn for graduation parties and birthday parties. This entailed us cleaning everything up to make it “party ready,” but also peaked a little interest in what it could be for a town like Lufkin,” said David and Lois’ daughter, Tamesha. It wasn’t until after the Shelton’s oldest granddaughter got married in an out of town venue that the family realized East Texas needed an event venue and they knew just the place. “It didn’t take too much convincing that Lufkin needed a wedding/event venue and we wanted to be it. We decided to give it a trial run and see how it worked out. Within a few weeks there were weddings, family reunions, and class reunions booked,” Tamesha said. In March of 2014 Shelton’s Place was established. The family renovated the barn expanding it from 2400 square feet to 7400 square feet, adding a bridal and groom suite. “It was our goal to bring a premier event facility to the East Texas area,” said David and Lois’ daughter-in-law, Kelly Shelton. That they did. As Lufkin’s only premier venue, Shelton’s Place is booming with business. The family has already booked 24 weddings for 2015 and is receiving new inquiries by the day. Shelton’s Place is a one stop shop venue, offering a beautiful picturesque country setting for the perfect event. However, when you book an event at Shelton’s Place you don’t just get a barn, you get so much more. “We can assist in little, much, or all of your needs when you are here,” Shelton explained. From planning your entire event to just providing the barn, Shelton’s Place is there for whatever you need to make your event a success!

Special Memories
COME ALIVE
My experience at the Shelton’s place was perfect. There are many options to choose from. We rented the building for October while we knew they were still under-going some construction. We added the bridal suite, outside pews and stage, sweetheart table, and coffee bar. The Shelton’s Place also catered the amazing food. We were blessed with almost 400 guests and there were about 165 vehicles parked for the wedding. We have had nothing but compliments on our daughter’s wedding. We would not change one things about their best day ever. Thank you Shelton’s Place for all the personal touches. - Jerrie Pyle-Wisener

o think this year, 2015, has been 10 years since our inaugural year doesn't seem real. I definitely couldn't tell you ten years ago this is where we would be.
Rewind to 2004. I remember like it was yesterday, mainly because my world forever changed, for the better. I became a mom for the first time. Bosten was born.
That's when my eyes opened and saw things I didn't see before. I wasn't born or raised in East Texas. When I arrived in 2001, I noticed things were definitely different and not what I was used to. Once I became a mom, more stood out. There were so many amazing women right here in this community. Amazing women that could encourage, inspire, and uplift other mothers, grandmothers, and women. There wasn't a central hub for new moms that needed to be in the know of baby and toddler stuff. That's when God, and I can say God because none of this would be humanly possible, laid it on my heart to bring a local publication for women to East Texas. Fast forward to 2015. This journey has been so similar to a marriage. The early years were definitely learning years, yet filled with excitement from the newness. Just when you get too comfortable, curve balls keep you on your toes. I had more babies which meant I needed more help (in every way you can imagine!). Then we hit the growing pains. Growing the workforce and growing the magazine. Our initial 24 page women's magazine has grown to a community wide 100 page publication. This journey has been like no other. I thank The Lord everyday for giving this to me and putting it in my path. Because of that, I have met so many of you and have made many new friends. Here's to an exciting 2015 celebrating 10 years!

hh, the groom’s table at a wedding. It’s always so much fun to see the personality of the groom in the one small area he gets to decorate. This table is usually one of the focal points at any wedding so it needs to be decorated well and show the groom’s uniqueness and individuality. But you don’t have to blow the bank or go buy a bunch of new stuff! tjmag.com • 17

COFFEE MUG
MARQUEE LETTERS
Looking for a fun gift for the wedding party or hostesses at a wedding shower? Try making your own personalized coffee mug. These make great gifts and are inexpensive. They only require a little time.
SUPPLIES:
SUPPLIES: • coffee mug (check the Dollar Store or Big Lots!) • Sharpie “Industrial Super Permanent Ink” marker (available at Lowes) • stickers • nail polish remover or rubbing alcohol 1. Put your sticker down on your mug then began making dots all around. If you mess up, you can use nail polish remover to wipe off the sharpie.
• paper mâché letters • exacto knife • strand of battery powered white lights (we used three strands for ours) • drill • drill bit (bit size depends on the size of your light bulbs) 1. Use your exacto knife to remove the top of your letters. 2. Drill holes into your letters. 3. Push your lights through the holes; turn them on and you’re done!!
2. Remove the sticker. 3. Place the mug in the oven before you turn it on. Set the oven to 450 and bake it for 30 minutes. Turn the oven off and leave the coffee mug in to cool completely. Do not remove your mug while it is hot or your mug could crack! Repeat the baking process twice for a super permanent bond, and your mug should be safe for the top rack of your dishwasher. 20 • THE JOURNEY • THE WEDDING ISSUE
P
resley and Hunter Whitley are sweet newlyweds who are like so many who have come before them. Their first home together was built by Hunter who is a contractor/builder and owns his own company, 217 Construction. With Presley still being in graduate school, they wanted to create something very economical with the feel of an older farm house. When Hunter first proposed the idea of building a 700 square foot metal building home, Presley was a little hesitant. In the end, it was exactly what they both wanted. Presley says, "Home is wherever Hunter is and wherever we are together, so that is number one in making our house 'home,' but also it is full of
precious pictures and treasures that have been given to me and collected. I love all things old, chippy and with character, so I tend to gravitate towards pieces that as Hunter would say, 'Look like they're about to fall apart,' and of course our two dogs, Case and Brazos" It's hard to choose their favorite part of their home because they love every piece. Presley especially loves the bead board wall in the kitchen that she and best friend Anna Dean painted. Presley shares, "I also love the coffee station that is in the kitchen and the record player sitting on top of the old dental cabinet. Our pantry is an old set of lockers that my grandma gave me, so that's pretty cool, too. Our house also has a lot of natural light that Hunter was sure to add with the big windows. I also cherish the time spent together creating our home. Don't worry about how new your home is, how much it cost, or how big it is, home is what you make it. Surround yourself with pieces that make you happy and tell your story."

DESIGN TIPS

New Year, a New Look
A
new year brings a need for change and improvements to old habits and environments. Home design and decor are no exception. We all get excited when thinking about what a new year will bring, even in our home space. Twenty-fifteen looks to be an interesting year for color schemes, fabric and decor!
Vintage and Retro Amazing retro colors, like bright orange and “poodle” pink will be very “on trend” this year. Everyone loves the cheerful, happy feel that vintage brights bring to any room, whether on a wall, in fabrics or accessories. Vintage decor takes us back to simpler times and will continue to remain popular in 2015. Don’t be surprised to see vintage family photos on display and long forgotten furnishing and objects retrieved from attics and mixed with fresh decor.
Metallics and Natural Elements This year, we will see metallic and natural elements added to home design and decor in new, inspiring ways! Watch for cool, metallic additions in wallpaper, pillows, fabrics and rugs as well as metallic, modern accessories intertwined with natural elements and raw materials. Combining metallics and natural elements bring depth and warmth to a space. Woods in lighter colors create an open, airy feel, while darker woods evoke glamour and masculinity. A grouping of metallic and wood frames always makes a great decor statement.
Cool Tones and Pastels Cool pinks, soothing greens and fabulous purples will be very popular in 2015. These colors will be especially impactful when paired with retro or neon colors in aqua, orange and yellow. In the past few years these colors have been confined to bedrooms or nurseries, but they are making their way into other rooms lately and we all love this trend! Live happy!
Bring the Outdoors In Designers and decorators alike will embrace the ideas of outdoor elements inside the home space in 2015. Think rock and brick walls. This is a retro trend, and we love it! Outdoor elements bring a serene beauty to any indoor space. When they are complimented with glass or metals, they create a clean, classical feel with a modern twist. These trends are just a few of many the New Year will bring to the home decor and design arena this year. Incorporate one or all and you’ll definitely be “trending” for 2015! Blessings, Sabrina

Planning a Wedding in 3 Weeks /// Continued Kallie Wisener, now Wilson, and Kyle Wilson knew from the moment they started dating that they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together. “Love at first sight can be such a cheesy saying, but after meeting Kyle for the first time I got a taste of what that really meant,” Kallie said. However with Kyle’s job keeping him more than 5 hours away every two weeks, the couple didn’t get to spend a lot of time together. With each day feeling longer than the one before, Kyle knew what he had to do to be able to spend every waking moment with the woman he loves.

Arrived at Shelton Place 8:30 AM to start the “Best Day Ever”
“I knew she was the one the day we jumped on the same horse together and rode bareback,” Kyle explained.
Here is how those 3 weeks panned out:
On October 12, 2014 Kallie Wisener married Kyle Wilson in what the say was and is the best days of their lives. “The big day turned out perfect. I wasn’t expecting such a big turnout. There were a lot of people there. I loved how the wedding was decorated. I had my best guy friends standing behind me and the lady of my life right in front of me. So, it was perfect for me. The best day of my life,” Kyle said. 28 • THE JOURNEY • THE WEDDING ISSUE
“Everything was to perfect to a “T”. I could honestly say our wedding was completely and utterly f lawless thanks to everyone that helped. I got so many compliments that it was great and fun and the best wedding they had ever been to,” Kallie said. Some might call it a miracle, but Jerrie calls it the work of God. “I am a planner, but God’s Word took over. His ways are not our ways, His thoughts are
not out thoughts, but His is so much greater. We could not have done it if our steps weren’t ordered by our Lord and Savior.” While she said it wasn’t easy planning the wedding, she believes it was worth it because her daughter was able to marry her best friend.

HOME ADVICE TOUR
Marriage:
A Beautiful Adventure Ashley & Corey Pigg
I
n their early years, being young and in love worked for their advantage. When the storms came, Ashley and Corey Pigg knew they could tackle them together because they were in love and had faith in the Lord. Ashley says, “The best thing about marriage is just being with my best friend every day. The ‘excitement’ we started with has faded and our adventure has turned into a busy schedule and monotonous routine. But I still love it because it’s with him.” “I think the first 15 years was spent navigating through the unknowns of life. What would we do for a living, where will we live, when will we have kids. All of those kinds of questions. Fifteen years and 2 kids later we have more of a plan,” says Corey.
They have some advice for young married couples. They say to love each other as you love yourself. The Piggs explain, “That sounds simple enough, but newlyweds are two separate individuals with their own desires and expectations coming together in one relationship. That can be tough. It’s easy to get focused on ourselves and what needs we have that aren’t being met. It’s easy to stew in anger and frustration. It’s easy to spout out words that hurt and make us feel justified. It’s not easy when we feel that way to stop and love them. It’s not easy to serve them, but that’s exactly what we want the other person to do at that time.” Ashley and Corey desire that their relationship with God be the very center of their home and lives. They say, “We know we may go through some tough times and we may face some struggles we didn’t see coming. We aren’t perfect and fail often. But we trust in God, depend on his grace and seek to honor Him. I think of the scripture that describes a tree planted by the water and it sends out its roots by the stream. It says, ‘It does not fear when heat come; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in the year of drought and never fails to bear fruit’. Jer. 17:8. Our prayer is that that would be the image of or marriage.” After 15 years together, they have two great kids. Jack is 10 and Hannah is 8. Jack loves to hunt, play soccer, hunt and hunt some more. Hannah likes gymnastics and piano.
Kaye & Jay Wyatt
S
aying these two are high school sweethearts is not full disclosure. They were elementar y sweethearts. They met in the 5th grade while attending school in Diboll. Jay says that their love blossomed the summer before their sophomore year when Kaye walked over to his house to borrow a tennis ball for a tennis racket she did not own. The two dated for seven years, two of those being engaged, and married on January 6, 1979. What was the scariest thing about marriage? Kaye: The scariest thing for me was moving to Houston, I had lived in Diboll all my life and was scared to move to the big city. Jay was attending the University of Houston playing football for them, so he loved living there. Jay: Kaye’s cooking! What does it take to make it to 36? Kaye: It takes putting God first in your marriage, and a lot of give and take (more giving for him than me, ha) and loving each other no matter what, and always kiss them goodnight! Go to church together as a family. When you have problems between the two of you, talk it out, and keep working on your marriage, and don’t just give up like so many couples do now. Jay: Putting Jesus Christ first in your life. If you are the man, then just agree! As I have told my son there are some battles not worth fighting and, “If I wanted your mother to know, I will tell her myself.” They have two children. JJ graduated from the University of Houston, where he played football and lettered 4 years. He now teaches and coaches football, basketball and baseball in Diboll. Chaney was on the cheer/dance squad at Angelina College before continuing her education and graduating at SFA Chaney teaches Kindergarten in Diboll. Chaney is now married to Chad Chittum and they have 2 beautiful children, Chloe will soon be 9 and Chandler is 9 months old.
J
Jeffie & Ben Burns eff ie and Ben met while attending Mt. Lebanon church camp. She was in 8th grade and he was in 12th. They dated for three years. Right before her senior year in high school, and while Ben was in college, they were married.
Jeffie said, “I did not want Ben to marry me because I was pregnant, so I fought his request of marriage for about 6 weeks! He finally convinced me." After 6 months of marriage, they welcomed their first child. The fear of the unknown is always daunting. “I think I had a fear of failing at marriage, especially because we started a marriage with a child. We wanted to be married because it was what God wanted not because we had conceived out of marriage.” Now, thirty-f ive years later, the best years have arrived. Jeffie explains, "We love living and doing life together; the good, bad, and ugly.
The icing on the cake was Ben getting down on one knee saying he would marry Jeffie all over again, then gave her a beautiful diamond ring. Today, they have three beautiful children to show for their union. Jeremy is 35 years old and has been married to his wife, Abby, for 12 1/2 years. They have 4 girls: Stormi, Avari, Preslei and Molli. Jennifer is 33 years old and has been married to her husband, Chris, for 13 years. They have 4 boys: Nathan, Benjamin, John Wesley and Crosby. Jackie is 29 years old and has been married to her husband, Justin, for 8 years. They have 2 children, Gehrig and Lake. Jeff ie says, “God. It's all God. He gets the credit for our marriage. Really, He is the One that f ills me so that Ben doesn’t have to, He is the One that helps me forgive, when I don’t want to. He is the One who helps me love Ben, when I don’t want to.”
We laugh a lot, well he laughs at me. We are a good balance. I am the helium balloon and he holds on tight." “Marriage is about forgiving and loving unconditionally. I learned very early in our marriage that Ben could not meet all my needs, only God could! We were going to fail each other, physically, mentally, emotionally even spiritually,” said Jeff ie. One very special memory in the thirty five year marriage was their 25th wedding anniversary. Their parents threw a huge wedding reception they never had, complete with cake and everything that comes with it. “When we got married, all we could afford were two gold bands that cost $100 each! It took us 2 years to pay for them.”

HOME BRIDALTOUR TIPS
Take Their Word For it To sum it up (I’m no expert). Keep God in the center of your relationship. Also, you must compromise and sacrifice. - Bryan Harkness
I would say trust is the most important thing at any time in a couple’s relationship. If you don’t have trust you can never grow as a couple. My advice would be to build trust in your marriage; if you have a strong foundation of trust your marriage will be strong and fulfilling.
Top 10 for the Father of the Bride 1. Make and agree on a budget. 2. Remember the purpose of the event is to join husband and wife before God and we are just observers.
- Andrew Dover
3. Avoid the small stuff. 4. Get lots of videos and photos but enjoy the event as it happens. 5. Professional wedding planner is worth the money. Have a contract. (This greatly reduces stress on the Bride and the Mother of the Bride... very important!) 6. Strongly encourage pre-marital counseling. 7. Always have a Plan B (inclement weather, venue issues, etc.) 8. Tell your daughter and her future husband you love them frequently...some things are better said than assumed! 9. Welcome your new son into the family. 10. Remember you’re the host of your daughter’s most memorable event. Smile, shake lots of hands and make your guests feel welcome! - Dr. Kevin Hudson
It is a wonderful experience for a Dad to have his daughter marry a fine young man. Dads don’t get to pick the young man though. We even have to be careful that we don’t push our daughters to who we “feel” like is the better choice for her. I think the best thing a Dad can do is to simply set an example for his engaged/ dating daughter by treating his wife the way he would want his daughter’s husband to treat her. In that way daughters have help in recognizing a healthy relationship. There is a special bond between daddies and daughters. I would encourage all dads to spend time and pay attention to their daughters, make sure she knows how amazing she is and to never settle for less than what she deserves. - Clyde Herrington
36 • THE JOURNEY • THE WEDDING ISSUE
For us, the idea is that marriage is all about God. In today’s culture, we consistently hear that it’s all about us, our happiness, and our rights, but that seems to completely conflict with the central message of Christ. We are watching this beautiful, divine story unfold in our marriage simply because we have chosen to try and make it about Him instead of us. Our advice: Chase God with everything you got, because the closer you get to Him, the more you’ll discover a Love that is set apart from anything we can create here on earth, how relentlessly He’s been chasing you from day one, and how to return that love to God and people (especially your spouse). - Alexis & Jared Pigg
The excitement of being a newlywed and having your dream wedding become a reality is one of life’s greatest moments. My advice to that sweet newlywed couple is to simply savor the moment. The first year of anything is the hardest. It is very easy to wish away those first few years, hoping for the future when finances will be easier, when you get into your “own” home, or when school is finally finished and careers can begin. While these are all great milestones, be careful to not look so forward to the future that you forget to cherish the now. Also, spoil your husband a little! Not just with the big things, but the small things as well. Leave him notes on the mirror or bring him a snocone to work- just because. The little things go a long way, too!
Being the Mother of the Bride was one of most amazing experiences I’ve had in my life. My advice is to really listen to your daughter’s creative ideas and do everything you can to make it happen. Also I would really advise you to save and hire out as much as possible so that you can really enjoy & capture every moment of her Special Day! There are so many gifted people locally that I hired that made Krista’s Dream Wedding a reality! - Tammy Holder
- Tifah & Alex Fleniken

where. Having one document that everyone accessed simplified our busy lives.
2. Start early in the planning…for example, research wedding cost and set a realistic budget with some wiggle room. Let your daughter know up front there is $X total for wedding expenses and plan accordingly. The number of guest invited will determine your total wedding expenses regarding venue, food, alcohol, flowers, and wedding party gifts.
4. Find a way to organize your role as the MOB! A calendar and notebook file was necessary to keep my wedding contacts, pamphlets, business quotes, and contracts with me at all times.
3. Allow plenty of time to develop the invitation guest list including guest of the future in-laws. Claire used Google Docs Excel spreadsheet so that both families could add and edit names/ addresses online any time from any-
5. Enjoy this time in your daughter’s life! It’s a precious mom/daughter time so find ways to savor the moments! Happy wedding planning! - Jennifer Cumbie
My advice for pre-wedding would be to just enjoy all the wedding festivities and try not to get too caught up on the details. As far as newlyweds I would say be patient and don’t sweat the small things. Learning to live with a new person is hard and it is easy to fight over trivial, silly things at first. It took us a few months to learn to pick your battles and be patient with one another and the whole adjustment. Above all remember life is too short to fight all the time, just love each other, laugh together and try to enjoy the time you have with each other. You only get to be newlyweds for a short time. - Maci Dover

BACHELORETTE PARTY
Bridesmaids on a Budget
An Open Letter to All Brides, from Their Bridesmaids Bride, First off we would like to thank you for choosing us to be a part of your big day! We know your special day will be filled with joy and happiness just like you deserve. However, we would like to remind you that while the majority of your wedding costs are paid for, ours are not.
• Scavenger Hunt- If you insist we get out of the house, we would prefer to go places we might not go on a normal day! There are a ton of bachelorette scavenger hunt ideas on Pinterest, so choose the one that best suits your fancy. After the scavenger hunt we can go out on the town or celebrate at a nice dinner!
Most of us are in our early to late 20’s and we don’t have our lives, let alone our financial responsibilities, quite in order yet. So, if you could cut us a break, we would really appreciate it and might even be able to get you a nicer wedding present! We’re poor, help us!
• Something educational- No, we don’t mean re-visiting our old stomping grounds! We mean let’s learn something together. For example, let’s go to a cooking class, a painting party or dance lessons. While we would prefer the cook to be a single bachelor who owns his own restaurant, we will settle for your grandma’s amazing skills!
We have a small list of guidelines and requests when it comes to celebrating your walk down the aisle:
1. Bachelorette party: I know you might have imagined a trip to Vegas with a pink tiara and a show with Chipmunks (you get where I am going), but let’s be real, Vegas is so overrated! At the end of the weekend, your dignity and your checkbook will thank us! Also, let’s remember that while we are celebrating your last nights as a single woman, you aren’t actually single; you are engaged. So, let’s keep it that way! Instead of an expensive trip out of town, why don’t we do something local? The East Texas area is full of great places for us to get together and hang out. Here is a small list of places we picked out for your perfect bachelorette weekend! Here are our top 4-bachelorette party ideas: (These are in no particular order) • Glamping (Glamorous camping)- We can stay at someone’s apartment or house and give each other manicures & pedicures while listening to the best of the 80’s & 90’s. We can indulge in some good ole girl talk while sipping on “Sex and The City” themed cosmos! Not only will we save money on bar-priced drinks and cab costs, but we will also be able to enjoy each other’s company in the comfort of our PJ’s. No make-up + cosmos + PJ’s = one night to remember!
38 • THE JOURNEY • THE WEDDING ISSUE
• Bachelorette/ Groomsmen Olympics- This will be a fun way for us to get to know the other half of the party! A little friendly competition never did anyone any harm. Again, Pinterest has tons of ideas of different games we can play to really show who rules the world! So, let’s be honest, we are bridesmaids on a budget. While we want you to have the best party of your single life, we also have bills to pay. Don’t forget all of the other things we are obligated to purchase for your wedding, which brings us to our second point.
2. The famous bridesmaid’s dresses: We love you to pieces and are willing to wear whatever beautiful (yes that was sarcastic) dress you choose, but can you make sure it isn’t the price of a used car?! I mean give us a break, we are already wearing this dress that you claim we can wear again, which we all know isn’t true, so the least you could do is choose one that falls within a reasonable price range. Just a heads up! You can actually find really cute dresses at your everyday stores, and if they don’t have them in everyone’s size you can usually make a special order!
Our 3rd and final request
3. Keep Calm & Don’t be a Bridezilla: We understand that for the past few months you have been stressed out getting everything together and we want your big day to be as perfect as you planned, but it isn’t going to do you any good by turning into the wicked witch of the west. We’re here to help, so take a deep breath. Remember you are
about to be on a beach laying under the sun with the man of your dreams, while we stumble around the wedding venue trying to piece together last night’s events. Love,
Your Bridesmaids P.S. We aren’t actually maids tjmag.com • 39

pangler was born on the Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene, Texas in 1998. From the moment she walked into her first classroom, her parents knew she was destined for greatness.
“She puts tremendous effort into everything she does. She is very bright and she studies hard and accepts the responsibilities of the academic requirements that she faces,” Kellen’s mother, Lori said. Spangler goes far beyond just making the A honor roll at PCA; she also makes outstanding grades in her college courses at Angelina College, as well.
“She is blessed to have the opportunity to attend college while completing her high school credits,” Lori said. While academics is very important to Spangler, her true love in on the basketball court where she leads the PCA Lady Wolf’s in leadership and in points. “Kellen does love school and whole-heartedly accepts the requirements of her classes, but it is the Pineywoods Lady Wolf basketball team that she truly enjoys,” Lori said. When she isn’t in the classroom or on the court, Spangler spends her time singing with the Cornerstone United Pentecostal Church Youth Choral, Amplified and leading her peers as junior class secretary. “Kellen has always been a hard worker in school; however, this year has been a stellar year for Kellen academically,” Lori said. A year she said wouldn’t have been possible without her basketball coach, Antoinette Carter. “Coach AC has quickly become a major contributor to the successes Kellen has found this year. Her high expectations and faithful guidance is transforming Kellen into a young lady with high standards and an attitude of excellence,” Lori said. Spangler is planning on attending Texas A&M’s College of Medicine to become a pediatrician. “She is very strong in math and science and finds all things medical to interest her most,” Lori said. Not only does Spangler credit her coach for her success, but she also gives credit to God. “Kellen is a young lady who relies completely on her faith to give her the strength she needs to succeed. She also very quickly and carefully gives God the glory and praise for each and every success she enjoys,” Lori said. So, until she begins her journey towards becoming a doctor, Spangler plans on continuing her success at PCA. 42 • THE JOURNEY • THE WEDDING ISSUE

HUDSON ISD ART SMART:
Embracing Art Expression in Our 21st Century School of Learning by Scott Mackey, Principal | Cindy Murray, Asst. Principal W. H. Bonner Elementary, Hudson ISD
Hands-on, creative arts-based projects are an excellent way to enrich student learning and bolster high-level thinking skills. The leaders and staff at W.H. Bonner Elementary embrace the use of art as an avenue to increase student learning across academic disciplines. This year Bonner Elementary began a program which encourages students with artistic abilities to learn through fine arts. In December, a group of Bonner Elementary 5th graders took part in the Wyland National “Water is Life” Mural and Art Challenge. The purpose of this challenge was to instill an understanding of oceanography, while students learn collaboratively with others. Nita Brock, 5th grade teacher, initiated Bonner’s ‘Art-Smart Club’ as a way for students to participate in activities such as the Wyland Challenge. The students meet after school one day per week for scheduled activities.
Students participating in the recent Wyland Challenge were: Kaleb Morgan, Ethan Hopson, Francisco Rios, Tiffany Spears, Sarah Parks, Noah Kilman, Jocelyn Flores, Kaylee Stockman, Trinity Beaver, Kynlee Tieperman, Braden Rowell, Hannah Slusher, Kelsie Hunter, Addsion Mount, and Faith Thompson. The students submitted a 5ft. by 8ft. canvas painted with an ocean and beach scene, as well as five other individual paintings. “Each child has a different artistic ability, and when we put all of these skills together, the result is amazing!” said sponsor Nita Brock. Regarding the recent challenge, Brock stated, “We learned about the ocean and its importance to all of creation. We talked about the importance of water in general and how important it is in sustaining life of all kinds.” She further stated, “Students are wanting to learn in nontraditional ways. Many students are interested in art; they love to create. Teaching through arts is just another way to meet a child’s learning style.” The Wyland Art Challenge was the f irst of many projects Brock has planned for the school year. She has also praised HISD school leaders for embracing art expression and making it a valued part of 21st century learning. Brock and Bonner school leaders encourage community members and parents to get involved and help the Art-Smart program at Bonner thrive. If you are interested in helping the Bonner Fine Arts program through volunteer work, contact Nita Brock via e-mail, brockn@hudsonisd.org.
LUFKIN ISD G/T TESTING
by Dr. Goffney, Supt., Lufkin ISD
With the beginning of the New Year, parents are already thinking about the next new school year beginning in August 2015 and where their children will attend school. Luf kin ISD has some of the best programs available to students of all interests and abilities. To be eligible for some of the programs, testing takes place in the spring. For students who are entering kindergarten in the 2015-16 school year and are interested in learning Spanish along with English, the Dual-Language program is a perfect fit. To find out what the program entails, an informational parent meeting will be held on February 12th at 6:00 p.m. at the Burley Primary Cafeteria. Testing to be in the Dual Language program is February 23rd to March 5th. For additional information or to have your child added to the Dual-Language Testing Database, contact the Lufkin ISD Bilingual Department at (936) 630-4290. Does your child learn quickly, display creativity, have a vivid imagination, ask multitudes of questions, have high interest levels, and use critical thinking skills? If so, you may want to have him or her screened for placement in Luf kin ISD’s Program for the Gifted & Talented. Requests must be made January 5th through February 20, 2015 by completing an application and returning it to the Luf kin ISD G/T off ice by February 20, 2015. Testing will begin January 20th through March 6th for placement in the G/T program for the 2015-2016 school year. For more information and application forms, call (936) 630-4254. Along with these two programs are a variety of learning experiences and opportunities at all Lufkin ISD campuses. To ask any questions about our programs, contact Lynn Torres, Deputy Superintendent at (936) 630-4257. To schedule a tour of any of our campuses or to meet with the Superintendent, call the Communications Department at (936) 630-4246, and we’d be happy to show you around. ZAVALLA ISD
NEW DIRECTION Mr. Michael Woodard says he loves his new role as superintendent at Zavalla ISD and has enjoyed meeting and working with the ZISD employees and board members. He came to Zavalla from Livingston ISD where he served as a special education teacher, coach, and assistant principal. Most recently, he was the junior high principal for 6 years. Mr. Woodard has also been employed as a special education teacher for Trinity ISD and Diboll ISD prior to Livingston. Mr. Woodard is a product of Corrigan ISD where he, his wife and two children still live. He received his bachelor’s degree from Stephen F. Austin State University, his Master’s from Walden University and his superintendent certification through UT Tyler. When asked about his vision for Zavalla ISD, Mr. Woodard says, “I am confident that we are headed in the right direction. We have made much needed improvements in technology. Our focus is now on Career and Technical Education and how to better prepare students to enter college and/or the workforce

with the academic and vocational skills needed to be successful.” There have been many changes since Mr. Woodard has been at the district, especially in technology. Mr. Woodard and Russell Bryan, the new Technology Director, have been working closely with Region 7 to upgrade technology in the district by increasing connection speed, purchasing 50 new computers and 180 tablets for the elementary school, adding a new sound system in the cafeteria, and creating three fully operational computer labs for student use, in addition to our portable lab and distance learning lab. There is also a new district website, www.zavallaisd.org that is currently being managed by students in our technology classes. For the f irst time in Zavalla ISD's history, the district is partnering with Angelina College Community Services to offer a phlebotomy certif ication course. Five students have successfully completed the course. In the spring semester, they will be offering a CNA certification class, and there are currently 5 students enrolled in that program.
Zavalla junior high students recently competed in UIL academic contest hosted by Broaddus ISD. Approximately half of the junior high student body competed in at least one event. The district placed 3rd overall. Thirty Zavalla Elementary students with perfect attendance were rewarded with a brand new bicycle donated by Academy Sports and Outdoors. Jackson Coates, manager of the Luf kin store, said, “We like to reward them for coming to school every day. At that age, it is not too easy to want to get up and go to school. “

10 Weekend Winter Wardrobe Essentials Winter wardrobe essentials are bound to keep you warm and stylish throughout the season. After spending all week in your work clothes, sometimes it’s pretty tough to figure out what to wear on the weekend without looking like you just rolled out of bed. When it comes to weekend winter dressing, there are some tried and true favorites that you’ve just got to have in your wardrobe. Investing in such staple pieces will mean you’ll always have something to wear, no matter what is in or out of fashion.
Faux Fur Vest
Blazer For a lighter-weight outerwear option in winter, the blazer is a classic choice. Choose one made from a lighter fabric so you can wear layers underneath. Go for fitted styles in neutral colors that will work well with the rest of your wardrobe. Team your blazer with skinny jeans, riding boots and stylish scarves for a smart winter wardrobe. The fur vest is a key essential in your wardrobe. I couldn’t imagine a winter without having a faux fur vest in my wardrobe. Throwing one of these on over any of your winter outfits instantly give you a glam chic look! It’s a great layering piece that won’t be too bulky on a mild Texas winter day. Xhilaration Faux Fur Vest Target | $34.99
Knee High Riding Boots Keep your feet warm and dry in a pair of knee-high Riding boots. The Enemy of the Union
S
he told me, “I’m going through a divorce. It’s a terrible divorce.”
And exactly 48 hours later I was still asking myself, “Am I dreaming? Did she really just say that to me? Am I sure this happened? Not her. Not them.” So I asked her again. And she told me again. “Melissa, we’re getting a divorce.” And that was when I began to put thought to the words. I began to think, aloud, all of the things that were going through my head. I went to my husband and I sunk down in front of him and asked him to remind me why really crappy things happen to really great people. I didn’t take her news so hard because it was HER. Though, if you knew her and loved her like I do, you might have wanted to scream a little (as I did). And it wasn’t because I thought she was immune to anything that the rest of us mere mortals must deal with. (But I like to think there are a few superheroes left....there aren’t.) It wasn’t because she hid a breaking heart so enviably. (Though, she did.) Or because when she cried her mascara never ran. (Although apparently it did, because she’d been crying behind closed doors for a while.) It was just because the news – “divorce”– is all too common. It’s as common as having the flu; only with consequences
56 • THE JOURNEY • THE WEDDING ISSUE
a mile long. With the flu you are down, but you get up and eventually your body carries on. You get a prescription, a pill. Once a day for five days. And then done. With a divorce, you are down and it wreaks its havoc on the whole family. Everyone suffers. No one is immune. And again I heard her say: “It’s over. I hope it doesn’t get ugly. The children...” And I thought about my own marriage. I thought about how I want to run away sometime just so he’ll have to empty the dishwasher. I thought about how after 21 years of marriage the man can still make me want to pull my hair out. I thought about how if someone held a magnifying glass up to this union they might see all sorts of holes filled with putty and rag-tag patches holding seams together. But at a distance it is quite beautiful, sturdy, comfortable and certainly fun. Just like yours, probably. Pretty on the outside. Weathered on the in. Mine is mis-matched, but lovely. It is worn, but fits perfectly. It might be shabby, but it’s mine. Look closely at our seams, you’ll see they’ve been stretched, but never faltered. So what, then, is the difference in her marriage and mine? My marriage and yours? Your marriage and your neighbors? Not much, really. Both are sought after, day after day, minute after minute, by an enemy who lies in wait, seeking whom he may devour. Scripture says he skulks around like a hungry lion - just waiting for the pounce. Which is why sometimes it’s not the dishwashers that need emptying, it’s the bushes. His goal is only the marriage; kill that, and he gets all that dies with it.
Oh, the dresses fade & the f lowers wilt. The cake gets dry. And the photos get dusty. But the words you spoke were the promise you made. And yes, he’ll get the stomach bug one day and suddenly you’ll wonder what his mother did to raise such a big baby. Or he’ll get ANOTHER speeding ticket. He’ll get laid off, again. The mortgage will be late, again. You’ll start to have trust issues. He’ll start to seem distant. But you made a vow. And I assure you, my lovelies, the gift is not in a marriage that wakes up shiny and new the next day. But it’s in the waking up together 30 years from now and knowing you made it because you did everything you could to sew broken pieces into whole ones. Anyone feel like puttying up some holes, today? Patching up some tears? Protecting some valuables?

SOMETHING ABUNDANT Psalm 45:11 (The Message) “Now listen, daughter, don’t miss a word: forget your country, put your home behind you. Be here—the king is wild for you. Since he’s your lord, adore him. Wedding gifts pour in from Tyre; rich guests shower you with presents.”
10-12
T
his bridal edition has me in the mood for love. Shoot. Who am I kidding? Ever since Jesus shocked me with the holy scandal of His love, I’ve not stopped thinking of it. From creation in Genesis to Revelation’s last battle, the whole Bible is a story about God’s redemption of a sinful world by way of His Son’s wild love. If you confess Christ’s life, death, and resurrection, the person of Jesus as God’s Son and your Lord, all your sins are forgiven. You’re going to the glassy sea, and you’re gonna get married. The Word of God is so much more than rules and stories. It is your marriage contract with the Hero of heaven. I hope I have your attention. If so, let me tell you about the ancient Jewish wedding ceremony. You may be thinking, why? Well, because Colossians 2:16-17 tells us that the Jewish ceremonies, festivals, and feasts were “a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.” The Jewish wedding ceremony symbolized what is to come in Christ. The New Testament refers many times to the Church (the body of believers of Jesus) as the bride of Christ. We can never be powerful and effective as a body until we learn powerful effectiveness in Christ within a personal relationship. You will be missing out on ABUNDANT and ETERNAL life if you fail to recognize your role in His unique love story with YOU. And that story is being written even in the here and now of your every day through the Holy Spirit.
58 • THE JOURNEY • THE WEDDING ISSUE
It is I have studied and written a considerable amount on the subject of the ancient Jewish wedding and its meaning for the bride of Christ in this generation. However, one particular detail of the intricate and elaborate tradition seems to deal audiences a mighty shock. According to the ancient custom, a couple was betrothed and considered bound to one another in the eyes of the law and the Lord. However, they were not afforded any physical contact until their wedding night, which was usually one to two years after their betrothal. During that time, the bridegroom must prepare a bridal chamber within his father’s house where the couple would spend their f irst days and nights together. Interestingly, on the night of their wedding, the entire wedding party and close relatives gathered to partake of a wedding feast prepared by the father of the groom. The best man stood vigil outside the bridal chamber door waiting for word of the couple’s wedded consummation (wink, wink) and then he announced the joyous news to the wedding guests. Here is where the audience collectively gasps. Can you imagine? These details make almost everyone feel OCK-WARD! As the family and guests partook of food, wine, and music, the newly wed couple spent every bit of the first six days of their marriage in the solitude of the bridal chamber. Within the private setting, years in the making, they made their union complete in the most intimate privilege of the marital experience. Finally, on the seventh and last day of an ancient Jewish wedding, the couple joined the festivities and celebrated with their guests.
by Angie Nichols
a Love Story. It makes one wonder if it was awkward for the ancient Jewish bride and groom, too. Come on. Admit it. You were thinking the same thing. Perhaps the bridegroom tugged at the collar of his cloak and unnecessarily cleared his throat to break the sound of crickets chirping. Maybe the bride’s cheeks f lushed red and hot as she averted the piercing stares of her family and friends. I bet someone might have cut the painful social discomfort with nervous laughter like a knife through the top tier of a wedding cake. Did the men elbow one another in congratulatory awareness? Did the women blush and then giggle behind their hands and hush suddenly when they were caught? Did the children look around, tug on their mothers’ party sashes and ask aloud what they were missing? I guess we can only speculate as to what happened in the first moments when the Jewish bride and groom finally made an appearance at their own wedding feast. Still, I can’t help but wonder if the bride took extra care to smooth her tussled hair as it might give her away once she emerged from their chamber. But perhaps that is because I have a twisted view of intimacy. Maybe you do, too. I mean, in our modern, anything-goes culture few things are sacred anymore. We are barraged in images of inappropriate material on television, movies, magazines, and the Internet. Mostly though, we
walk right past, giving little thought to the life-sized poster of a young, curvy woman posing in her underwear while standing in an open field of wild f lowers. We don’t question how in the world she found herself without clothes in the middle of nowhere. Neither does the logic of displaying her near-nudity in public to sell a product cross our mind. Yet somehow it deals a mighty-gasp shock to think of a couple spending their first six days of marriage holed up alone together. Meanwhile their own mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, great-aunt Ruths and friends filled their plates and toasted the couple’s most sacred act of love while joining in the ancient Jewish version of the chicken-dance just outside the door.
This love story, and especially its Author, just might take your breath away. “Let us be glad and rejoice and honor him; for the time has come for the wedding banquet of the Lamb, and his bride has prepared herself. She is permitted to wear the cleanest and whitest and finest of linens.” --Revelation 19:7-8 (TLB)
I wonder at what point in the days between that ancient Jewish bride to you and me did it become normal to expose and display sexuality, but real righteous intimacy is embarrassingeven shocking. What if we got to know the God who created sacred intimacy between a covenant-committed man and woman as a ref lection of His Son’s love for His bride--the God who will throw a great banquet as the setting for such a joyous and private consummation? Perhaps a lesson in the righteous things that cause us to gasp is highly over-due.

The Ellermann’s Adoption Story Adopt (verb)- to choose or take as one’s own.
R
aising a child of your own is one of the most difficult jobs in the world, but raising an adopted child is something completely different, especially when that child is a teenager. Brittany and Dustin Ellermann know first hand what that’s like.

BORN FROM THE HEART
The Ellermann's Adoption Story /// Continued The Ellermann’s began fostering in January of 2008, and by that November they adopted their eldest son, Gideon. “We completed classes fairly quickly and were licensed in just a couple of months. We got a cuddly 2-year-old the next Monday, and he is now our big strapping (and still cuddly) 9-year-old,” Brittany said. A year later they adopted their second son, Kody. By this time the Ellermann’s knew the ins and outs of raising an adopted child, or so they thought. Several years after the Ellermann’s adopted their two boys, they were given a chance to adopt a second child. Only this time it wasn’t a child, but a 13-year-old girl. “Katie was living at my friend’s foster home, so we had known her over the years. Katie even came to camp when she was 9, and I was her counselor. I remember considering it way back then, but it just wasn’t time,” Brittany explained. It was when Katie returned to the foster system after being adopted out that the Ellermann’s knew it was meant to be.
their past, to help them make sense of it all,” Brittany said. Katie is now 15 and is happier than ever thanks to her loving and caring family. Brittany said while the family still has their hard days like any other family, they wouldn’t change a thing about it. “We adopted her because we felt God leading us to her. She was a gem floating around, getting passed from person to person and they kept giving her back, moving her on, not seeing her worth and value,” Brittany explained.
The Ellermann’s adopted Katie in November of 2013, but they had a long road ahead of them considering they were taking in someone that had already been through so much.
A gem that they were lucky enough to embrace and take in as their own. While every gem comes with a few sharp edges, the Ellermann’s believe no edge is too sharp for God to smooth out.
“You get to skip the sleepless nights and potty training, and they can be a great help. (Tada! You now have a teen that can help carry the toddler!) But really you are trying to play catch up, trying to help instill every morsel of character and integrity into a human who has been raised by many different people,” Brittany said.
“We have had real struggles, real moments of desperation and confusion and near hopelessness, but nothing is too big for God. If He called us to love these kids and commit to them, then He will guide us to the things we need to care for “His” kids. We just have to be those hands and feet of Jesus and live it out, day by day, in the flesh,” Brittany said.
Brittany also explained that one of the hardest things about adopting any child, not just an older one, is being able to fulfill the child’s emotional needs.
The Ellermann’s believe that if you feel a calling to adopt, then you should do it because it can be one of the most rewarding things you do. While adopting isn’t for everyone, there are thousands of God’s children out there that need help.
“No matter if you adopt a baby right after birth, there is a separation that will follow a child for the rest of their life, which means it will affect you for the rest of your life. So you have to be the one to walk alongside that child as they dig through
“We are all only given one life. These kids have only been given one, too and theirs got a rough start. They need food, clothes, and most importantly love,” Brittany said. At the end of the day, the Ellermann’s believe that even if you aren’t able to adopt, the least you can do as Christians is extend a loving hand. “In the end, every kid needs to know their value and worth, and too many have been lied to and told it was far too little. They will change the world, they will make a difference, but they need our help to get there. Please step up, put yourself out there, be vulnerable, and be a voice to remind these countless lives they are loved and important,” Brittany said.

WEDDING DETAILS
KID FRIENDLY WEDDING
W
e have all seen it, or rather listened to it, happen at a wedding; right in the middle the ceremony the cry of a baby or scream from a toddler comes belting from the audience.
But really what else did you expect? They are kids having to sit through a 30 minutes to hour-long ceremony, which to them is just as painful as sitting in the doctor’s office. At least the doctor’s office has toys and possibly other children. While it would be ideal for both you and the bride if you found a babysitter, we understand that it isn’t always feasible. Let’s face it; we really enjoy being around those little munchkins. So, we have some advice for both you and the bride when it comes to keeping the wedding enjoyable for all parties. Keeping the kids calm while you carry on:
Ceremony: 1. Brides, if your ceremony is at a church, try and request that the nursery facilities be open. If the church doesn’t offer that service, hire a few teenagers or babysitters to come and watch the kids while you participate in what might possibly be the most memorable day of your life. 2. If your ceremony is short and your venue doesn’t have a space for childcare, put out some small activities for the kids to enjoy while the ceremony is going on. For example, a small coloring book with some crayons (like the ones you get at restaurants) or something they can play with (that is quiet) at their chair. However, if your ceremony is long let’s just pray that they stay calm. 3. Parents, you won’t know until you get there if the bride has set out activities for the kids, so just to be on the safe side and download their favorite movie or kid friendly game onto your smart phone. Let them play with it while the ceremony is going on. Of course, don’t forget to bring headphones, because while the rest of the parents may know every song to Frozen they really don’t want to hear it for the 400th time.
4. Put together activities for the children who will be attending your wedding. Make an activity pack or fill a bucket or lunch bag full of fun toys and activities that the kids can enjoy throughout your wedding. This not only makes the kids feel like they are getting a gift, but it will also keep them entertained for hours. Don’t forget to throw in some snacks for them to munch on!
Reception: 1. Make a kids table, fill it with crayons, games, bubbles, and anything else that you can find that will keep them occupied. 2. Have a kid friendly menu. For the most part, your small guests don’t want to eat fillet mignon with a side of vegetables. They would rather have pizza with a side of mac n’ cheese.
Extra activities: -Kid photo booth -Jump house (also, fun for adults) -Candy Bar -Movie room/ nap station
3. Parents, don’t forget to pack some snacks and food for the little ones, the last thing we want is a tried and hungry child. 4. Have a kid friendly zone or area that is not too far from the parent, but far enough where they won’t get run over by your wedding party.
We know not every venue or budget is capable of doing all of these things. However, if you are going to have a wedding and invite kids, make sure you are being a good host to them, too. 64 • THE JOURNEY • THE WEDDING ISSUE

IN THE KNOW
LOCAL NEWS & LEGISLATIVE UPDATES TRAVIS CLARDY TEXAS STATE REPRESENTATIVE Just before Christmas, I had the opportunity to meet with Governor -elect Abbott for a legislative roundtable discussion with local representatives as he made a swing through northeast Texas. With the 84th session of the Texas Legislature set to convene in mid- January 2015, he outlined his priorities and sought our input. I was pleased to hear him focus on some key factors that are important to economic development and job creation. We discussed plans for funding improvement to our system of roads and highways, as well as the future direction of public education in Texas. A return to greater local control over administrative decisions and the provision of more career and technical education opportunities were identified as positive ways to enable educators to prepare students for success. We addressed the necessity
72 • THE JOURNEY • THE WEDDING ISSUE
of maintaining a strong law enforcement presence to secure the border. I expect to see more troopers and Rangers assigned to duty on the border and more funding at the local level to address problems of human trafficking and gang-related violence. It was great to have Governorelect Abbott visit East Texas again and a real honor to talk with him as your representative about the bright future of Texas. I’m looking forward to working with our new state leaders as the Texas Legislature begins deliberations this month. I encourage all residents of House District 11 to contact my Capitol (512-463-0592) or District (936-560-3982) office if you have any questions, want to voice your opinion or need assistance with a state related matter. You may also send an email to District11.Clardy@house.state. tx.us. If you are in the neighborhood, I invite you to drop by the office at your Capitol (Rm. E2.314).
TRENT ASHBY
TEXAS STATE REPRESENTATIVE The next Legislative Session begins this month, but an important decision regarding the outcome of the session has already been made. The Legislative Budget Board voted unanimously earlier this month to set a limit on state spending for the next two-year budget. The Texas Constitution requires that spending that is not constitutionally dedicated should stay beneath estimates of economic growth over the budget cycle. The Budget Board was given four projections of economic growth over the next two years and chose to set the spending limit using the most conservative growth projection. This ensures that when lawmakers discuss and debate budget proposals during session, they will be doing so in the most fiscally responsible and prudent manner. By choosing the most conservative estimate, the Budget Board, led by the House Speaker and the Lt. Governor, has set the tone for the upcoming session. When legislators begin appropriating funding in the months to come, we will do so in accordance to the example that our state leaders have set, which means wise investing and tight, balanced budgeting. The Legislative Budget Board also voted unanimously to expand law enforcement’s presence along the Texas-Mexico border, adding significant manpower to security operations that began last summer. Funding has been approved for Department of Public Safety personnel to receive overtime pay, while additional resources will also fund additional equipment, technology upgrades, and allow for more aerial reconnaissance. The proposal also includes the continued involvement of Texas Parks and Wildlife game wardens in the state’s border security efforts and funds the deployment of Texas National Guard troops. Texas taxpayers have been left footing the bill for the failures of our federal government. More than $100 million has been spent by the state of Texas in border surge operations. More than $300 million has been spent by our county jails and state prisons to incarcerate criminal aliens. These figures don’t take into account the massive amount of money spent on healthcare and education costs for unaccompanied minors, or even children who entered illegally with their family. Earlier this month, I joined with other state lawmakers and sent an invoice to the President and Congress, asking them to provide reimbursement for state funds spent carrying out actions that are the responsibility of the federal government.

LUFKIN CITY MANAGER
KEITH WRIGHT
M
anaging a city isn’t an easy task, but Luf kin native and newly promoted City Manager, Keith Wright, is ready to take it on.
Wright, a long time city employee, was promoted to Luf kin City Manager in October 2014 after former City Manager Paul Parker retired. “I feel that it is an honor and a privilege to represent Luf kin as its City Manager. I desire to do the best job I can to promote Luf kin and to help our City to continue to be the best place to live in Texas,” Wright said. Wright started his career with the city in 1978 as an Operator at the Wastewater Treatment Plant. After leaving in 1983 to study at the University of Houston, Wright returned to work for the city in 1995 as Assistant Director of the treatment plant and as the Environmental Compliance Manager. A year later Wright was promoted to City Engineer over the Public Works Department, after the former assistant manager Ron Wesch passed away. In 2005 Wright was promoted to Assistant City Manager of Public Works, which was later changed to Deputy City Manager. He remained the deputy until just recently when he was voted in as Luf kin City Manager.
“I never really thought about becoming the City Manager of Luf kin until the last several months. I had a lot of encouragement to seek the position and decided that I would enjoy a new challenge,” Wright explained. While this may be a new challenge for Wright, his experience with the city has helped him successfully transition into his new role. “I think our citizens can continue to expect to see a high emphasis on bringing jobs to Luf kin through our Economic Development Corporation,” Wright said. When it comes to economic growth in Luf kin, Wright said he wants to see the city continue to develop as a regional, medical, and retail hub through slow and steady growth that can be maintained. He also said that many of Luf kin’s infrastructures, particularly the streets, would begin to see improvements in preparation for that economic growth. Wright has a lot in store for the City of Lufkin, but says he is only maintaining the work that was done before him. “The City has been well run in the past, and I don’t see us making any major changes in the near future,” Wright said. As Wright continues to carry on the legacy that so many before him have left, he also looks to make a legacy of his own. When Wright isn’t managing a city, he spends the majority of his time with his wife Raela and two children, Shane and Kayla.

BACHELOR PARTY
Groomsmen Getaway /// Continued
T
here are two things a groom looks forward to when getting married. The first would be being able to marry the woman of his dreams, but the second is the bachelor party. While the ideal trip would be one with the guys to sin city, it isn’t always practical. So we’ve created a list of things you can do locally and for cheap!
1
Camping trip: There are tons of great camping sites in Angelina and Nacogdoches County. You can go hiking, fishing, hunting, and anything else guys do while out in the middle of the forest.
2
Old-fashioned game night: Bring out the poker chips, Foosball table, and ping-pong table and have yourself a good night with the guys. It will be just like old times!
3
Football/Baseball game: Set up a game with all of your old friends and family members. The winner of the game buys the other team a round of beer!
4
Paintball/Laser tag: I mean, do I really need to explain this one. Who doesn’t love a game of paintball or laser tag.
5
A round of golf: A great way to swing off that wedding stress all while having a great time with the guys.
6
Rent some dirt bikes and 4-wheelers and have a good time in the mud!
7
Zip-lining in Nacogdoches: How often do you get to go flying through the forest of East Texas.
8
Lake day: Pitch in and rent a house to spend the weekend on the lake away from the girls!

POINT OF VIEW
GRACE ALONE FOR LIVING ALONE
I
face it every night. After tucking my son in bed, I close the door and walk back into my living room. There it is, my faithful companion: being alone. I didn’t choose the single life. Yet God chose it for me (at least for this season). I was happily married with a newborn when my wife passed away in an automobile accident.
Every night I must choose how to pass my time. I could catch up on work, watch television, read a book, surf the internet, etc. But the one thing I would love to do is the one thing unavailable to me at the moment. I am anticipating a time that I can remarry and have a wife with whom I can share my evenings. I long for the day I can sit down and pour out my heart with my mate after a long day. I am eager for the next chapter of my life in which I can laugh with a new companion. But for now, God has brought me to a place of being alone. Being alone, however, is not all bad. In fact, Christ himself spent great amounts of time alone (Luke 4:42,5:16, 6:12, 9:36, Mark 1:35, 6:45-46). There can be great value in solitude. Yet, it is a difficult path. Being alone forces you to make choices regarding how you will occupy your time. There is no one else around to dictate your time for you. You have no excuse– you and you alone make the decisions. While there are a million-and-one things you could spend your time doing, everything boils down to two categories: get bitter or get better. You can choose to loathe in self-pity and bitterness about your state of solitude, or you can choose to spend your time in ways that are beneficial to your heart, mind, and soul. Which of the two options do you think Jesus practiced in His moments of solitude?

In order to take advantage of solitude rather than feeling like the victim of solitude, consider these tips: 1) For the believer, being alone is never really alone (Matthew 28:20). Remember, God is with us and will never forsake us (Romans 8:31). 2) In the moments of greatest weakness, remember that being alone requires grace alone. Grace is not just seen in forgiveness of past sins –it is also the strength to withstand present and future sin! Not only that, grace provides the power to remain faithful in the most difficult of circumstances (2 Corinthians 12:9). 3) Remember that God is still in control of all things (Romans 8:28). He has not forgotten you, but has a purpose for all of the circumstances you are presently facing. Whether or not I ever remarry remains to be seen. Yet no matter my future, one thing is certain: God’s grace is sufficient for me.

HOMETOWN HERO
Firefighter of the year:
John Cook
A
fter graduating from Kemp High School in May of 2006, John Cook began his academic career at Stephen F. Austin State University. However, after only two and a half years at SFA Cook realized he wasn’t where he wanted to be.
“I don’t think I consider us heroes because this is our job. This is what we choose to do, day in and day out. We all enjoy waking up, heading to the station for our shift, and knowing that we’re here to help anybody in need.” - Nacogdoches Firefighter of the Year, John Cook
“I was looking for a different career path, because I knew I did not want to be in an office all day,” Cook said. So, he walked out of the classroom and into the fire academy. “Within the f irst week of the f ire academy, I knew this was the profession

I wanted to be in and never looked back,” Cook explained. After graduating from the f ire academy in November 2009, Cook was hired on at the Na c o g d o c h e s F i r e Department and has been there for the past two and a half years. “These two and a half years with the Nacogdoches Fire Department have been amazing and all I could have hoped for. I look forward to waking up every day and heading to the f ire station for my shift. I consider myself blessed because I realize many people never get the luxury of truly enjoying their occupation,” Cook said. Just recently Cook was named firefighter of the year by his peers, something he considers an honor for even considered. He explains, “I still consider myself to be new and young in the f ire service, having only worked for two and a half years, so I feel privileged to even be considered for this award.” While Cook considers it an honor to be firefighter of the year, he considers his service to the city of Nacogdoches as even greater. “It’s a great feeling helping someone in need. When someone is having an emergency and it’s their worst day,
it’s our job to do everything in our power to help them in any way possible,” Cook said. At the end of the day Cook said the greatest thing is not only being able to help people but being able to do it with his friends and family by his side. “Another great thing about the f ire service is the comrade ere with the guys. We spend 24 hours together, every third day at the f ire station, so we are like a big family. We look out for each other and push each other to be the best we can be,” Cook explained. Cook doesn’t want to just stop at being a great firefighter; he wants to expand his career at the fire station by eventually becoming a captain and then one-day fire marshal. Congratulations John Cook. Nacogdoches is lucky to have a firefighter like you protecting our community.

very January a lot of us begin to eat healthier and work out. We all take our first steps towards a healthier us in the New Year! All December we tell ourselves…I will be better next year right? About a third of New Year’s resolvers make weight loss their primary goal, and about 15% aim to begin an exercise program, suggests a small study by John C. Norcross, PhD, professor of psychology at the University of Scranton, Pa. If you’re nodding your head and thinking, “Yup, I’m one of those people,” take heart. Your objective is a noble one, and, when accomplished, will surely do wonders for your health. Before you get started on those goals I would like to say just one thing, HaVe FuN!! So many people have lost their motivation to work out because they have simply allowed it to become work! How many of us know that when you have or have had a job that you did not enjoy, your performance suffered dramatically. Exercise does not have to be an all-consuming and excruciating endeavor either! There’s a connection between exercise and pain, discomfort,
Exercise does not have to be dull. Yet as people grow up, they lose the connection between fun and movement. He suggests thinking about the kind of person you are and what you like to do. Some people may love going to the gym while others prefer to play team sports. Still others favor jogging or walking around the neighborhood. The thing most people forget is that they didn’t become deconditioned and out of shape overnight. You shouldn’t expect to become well-conditioned overnight. Another huge part of reaching your goal to be healthier in the New Year is your nutrition. I suggest throwing the word diet out of your vocabulary completely and creating a new healthier lifestyle that you adapt and change for years to come. Consulting a dietitian for nutrition advice may help as well. Healthy eating is an essential part of a good fitness program. A person who works out a lot but does not nourish the body properly could be sabotaging or hiding the fruits of his labor. Dee Sandquist, MSRD, a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association, advises having a general plan, and investing some time in advance to make it happen. “Taking five minutes on the weekend to plan your food for the week can pay huge dividends,” she says. “Look at your schedule for the upcoming week, and find out how many meals you’ll be
eating in and how many meals you’ll be eating out. Make a list, and then go to the grocery store.”
FITNESS
SETTING GOALS PLANNING ahead is the key to success!! Planning works regardless of your dietary goal. Some people may prefer to work on reducing fat in their diet, adding fruits and vegetables, watching portions, eating at a slower pace, or curbing junk food. Whatever your goal is plan and you will have a higher success rate. I would also suggest making small changes gradually. If you cut out EVERYTHING (sodas, junk food, carbs, coffee, etc.) on Jan 1st then you will most likely be miserable and it will be hard to maintain that big of a change. If you cut out junk food week one and two, and then cut out the soda or coffee, and then after you aren’t missing that anymore begin to tweak your diet more and more and you will take small steps to get where you need to be. Whatever your aim, avoid getting too hungry. At that point, people tend to overeat and ignore their best intentions. Also, figure out what triggers you to overeat or disregard your nutrition plan. Determine how to avoid problems or how to tackle them. Also remember to reward yourself for your hard work… a fun idea is to get a jar and pay yourself a dollar every time you work out and then do something for yourself with that money at the end of each month, you could also reward yourself each time you choose a healthy snack over junk food. You can accomplish your health and f itness goals in the New Year but remember to be realistic, plan ahead, and HAVE FUN!
