ello ladies! I hope you have had a wonderful summer! As we discussed at our last general meeting, your Helping Hands Annual Campaign Committee planned to be hard at work over the summer and we have been! We mailed out first right of refusal letters to all of our past partners in July. We also made a change this year to the Our View advertisers, bringing them on board our annual campaign by creating an “advertising only” package. We have had a tremendous response! Our past partners have committed again this year by an overwhelming margin. Our committee is touched by the response as all our members should be. The businesses in our city and our wonderful Sustainers are behind us in our mission and trust us with resources to fill needs in our community. As of this article, we have raised $54,726. Our goal for the year is $60,000. As you can see, we are almost there, but need one last good push! As I asked in my e-mail to the members earlier this summer, please put on your thinking caps and let me know who you think would be a good partner for the Junior League. Think of that merchant that most of us visit, that merchant that has a heart for giving, that merchant that would like to partner with the League to further our wonderful mission... Of course, all this thinking does not come without incentives! For those that suggest a merchant, get the contact information to

me (Merchant, Contact Name, Address, Telephone, E-mail), and we actually get them as a partner for a package of $250 - $499, you will receive 2 Free Spring Market Tickets. For those that suggest a merchant, get the contact information to me (Merchant, Contact Name, Address, Telephone, E-mail), and we actually get them as a partner for a package of $500 $1,000, you will receive 2 Free Spring Market Tickets, plus your name in a drawing for 2 Free Charity Ball Tickets. For those that suggest a merchant, get the contact information to me (Merchant, Contact Name, Address, Telephone, E-mail), and we actually get them as a partner for a package of more than $1,000, you will receive 2 Free Spring Market Tickets, plus 1 Free Charity Ball Ticket. I want to thank those of you who suggested community partners earlier this summer. We have mailed out information packages to a number of community businesses and have had some good responses, so let’s keep those suggestions coming! We would like to welcome a new Gold Hands sponsor for 2010-2011, Urgent Doc! My family has already visited Dr. Iversen at his Lufkin clinic several times. When you have the opportunity, please thank the lovely Carrie Iversen for their support. In addition, we would like to thank Stephanie Oliver and The Journey Magazine for upgrading their partnership to the Gold Hands level. As most of you know, Stephanie is kind enough to donate advertising in her fabulous magazine multiple times during the year. I would also like to recognize the fabulous Jeanie McCusker for her tenacious follow up efforts with our partners. Jeanie secured a number of partners and is a real treasure to our League. Speaking of treasures, you will all want to give our wonderful Hospitality Chair, Michelle Briley a hug! She secured a food sponsor for each and every general meeting as well as a floral sponsor and a sign sponsor for the entire year. No more bringing food to meetings! Yay! Michelle is awesome! Once again, please take a look at the Helping Hands partner listing. If you don’t see a business on the listing that you think should be a Junior League Helping Hands Partner, let me know. I will get the information package to them as soon as possible. Also, please note the businesses that support our League and make a special effort to support them in return!

Board Summer Update
F
By Allyson Langston, President riday, August 13, was a busy day for League planning! At 8:30 a.m., Suzy Childers, Emily Parks, Jennifer Webster and I headed up to Longview to see the Junior League of Longview’s 17th Annual School Supply Train. Longview League President Sharla Sloane Visage is a great new friend Jennifer and I met in Orlando and she told us so much about their School Supply Train that we just had to see it for ourselves. She was gracious enough to extend an invitation and serve as our personal tour guide. It was a truly moving and wonderful experience and one that we were all thankful to witness. In one day, the Junior League of Longview and their community partners gave away 2900 backpacks loaded with school supplies along with providing uniforms, haircuts, vision screening, dental care, immunizations and more. We were all in tears at one point or another seeing the tremendous impact this day had on their community. It was truly inspiring to see this project in action and has given us all a lot to think about as we consider the direction and future of our League. That evening, your Board met for another retreat-let. We were able to catch up on all the summer events and great goingson of our projects and members. Anyone who thinks our League takes the summer off is terribly mistaken! This summer we have completed our School Supply Drive, our Camp Get Fit/Kids in the Kitchen, our Vision Screening Training, cleaned out and inventoried our League office, found numerous Helping Hands sponsors, created an outstanding new website, made a new directory that will be available in the

fall, and made a lot of plans for our annual community projects and fundraisers. Many thanks to all of you who have worked so hard and put in so many hours already--your board is excited for our meetings to start and proud that we are all here to serve!

i Everyone! Wow it has been a long hot summer, thank goodness fall is around the corner! My glorious placement this year is the cleaning out and spiffing up of the Junior League office. I (and my housekeeper) have worked several days during the summer cleaning and throwing out trash. I am hoping to have the JLL Office completely redone by the fall. We have so much inventory that can be used for events and for fundraisers. The mess and clutter made it difficult/impossible to see what items we had or needed! I am planning after JLL events, to take inventory of all new items purchased. If you want to make purchases for the JLL please don’t hesitate to contact me and see if we already have something you could use. My cell is 936-366-2590. If you have purchased something, please let me know so I can inventory the new items. We will be keeping good records so as to help with cutting JLL expenses. Thanks so much for your help and I will have pictures soon!
ur first Simply Done project will be a shirt or sweatshirt drive for the ACE (alternative) campus that serves LISD and other area districts. We are asking that each JLL member bring a solid gray crew neck T-shirt or sweatshirt to the September meeting. These are NOT regular dress code shirts, but T-shirts! They can be affordably purchased at Walmart or a dollar store. Thanks in advance for your help and generosity!

hope everyone had a wonderful summer! This is going to be a fun and exciting year filled with so many opportunities to serve. The Junior League of Lufkin is deeply grateful for the commitment of our members, both Active and Sustainers. It is your passion and enduring pledge of volunteerism that impacts the hearts and minds of the families in our community. Thank you for all you do and the legacy of leadership and service you are leaving behind. Use your legacy to make a difference this year!
Susan Belasco
am so excited and honored to serve this year as Hospitality Chair (or as I like to call itParty Patrol)! We are going to have a few changes this year during our meetings. For starters, we are not going to have food assignments! So what does this means to you? You will NOT be responsible for bringing any food items to the meetings. (Can I get a Woo Hoo?) We have enlisted the help of five wonderful Food Sponsors who will be providing the food for our meetings. Our Food Sponsors this year are: Nancy Winston with The Very Thing!, Texas Custom Catering, Popeye’s, Gregg Durham with Home Theater Concepts, and Outback Steakhouse. Please be sure and thank each of these sponsors who have generously volunteered their time and talent. Kwik Kopy has graciously donated a Food Sponsor sign that will be set up at meetings highlighting each sponsor. Another exciting change this year is the addition of our Floral Sponsor. Roderick of Texas Floral has willingly agreed to provide fresh centerpieces for the tables at each of the meetings. And just when you thought it couldn’t get any better – you will have a chance to take home an arrangement from each meeting! Arrangements will be given away to lucky members who attend the monthly meetings. Again, please make time to thank Rod for his support. Finally, Save the Date for our annual Christmas party which will be held on Tuesday, December 7th at 6:30 p.m. More details will follow. The food for the September meeting will be provided by The Museum of East Texas who is always so kind to cater this meeting for us.

Camp Get Fit/Kids in the Kitchen
T
By Heather Robertson, Chair
his year’s annual Camp Get Fit/ Kids in the Kitchen was held at the First United Methodist Church Family Life Center August 2nd through 6th. About 50 campers’s grades 3-5 attended three 45 minute sessions each day including cooking, exercise, and heath awareness. The focus each day was on the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. The camp ran smoothly with the help of our wonderful group of Junior League members and community volunteers. I am always amazed at how willing the community is to donate their time to help. Carol Bradley, a JLL sustainer and registered dietician, helped plan the menu and grocery list for each day’s cooking session. She also led the cooking lessons Monday and Tuesday. During the kitchen session the campers learned to prepare and cook healthy alternatives to their favorite dishes and snacks. We wanted to focus on the importance of nutrition and teach them to make better food choices. They were not always excited about the menu, but were then surprised at how much they actually enjoyed the dish. Also helping out in the kitchen each day to prepare the dishes, help the campers, and grocery shop were Donna Mathis, Angela Marcotte, Co-chair Laura Mikeal and I. We also had “junior helpers” Sara Kate Harris and Alex Robertson assisting. Elizabeth Durrett and Rachelle Frankens led the campers each day in the gym for exercise class after the morning warm up. The always energetic Jamie Mahan came early each morning to get the campers warmed up and excited about the day. The kids loved her and her fun dances! Some of the activities included scarf tag, basketball, and roller skating. Tonya Truett helped manage the campers while in the classroom sessions. Our wonderful community volunteers for the classroom included The Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention Center (who also performed a puppet show), dentist Tom Corley, registered dietician Amy McLeod, and Kari Aycock from Agrilife Extension Service County Extension Agency. Susan Harris, who I cannot thank enough for all of her help each day of camp and for helping Laura and me all summer, taught the campers the importance of manners and etiquette. In addition, to the camp committee members, we were very fortunate to have Kim Herman and Pam Ayres help most of the week as well as more junior helpers Colton Herman and Haley Williams. I couldn’t have asked for a better partner as cochair then Laura Mikeal. Laura’s help planning the camp made my job as chair so much easier; she was there in every step of the preparation. My favorite thing each year is getting to know our League members and members of the community on a more personal level. I have made new friendships and have realized again how our community truly cares about the children in Angelina County.

A Word of Advice By Melissa Handley
B
ack to school means new school supplies with crisp clean paper and sharp crayons, but it also means returning to a schedule and restarting the school year routine. Children tend to thrive in a consistent, predictable routine. When you restart the school year, it’s a great time to rebuild home routines which allow your family to function more effectively. If you set up a morning routine and teach children to move through this routine in the same order every day, the routine will become part of their long term memory and they are less likely to forget individual items, such as brushing their teeth. Your child can take ownership of the routine by letting you know in which order they would like to tackle each item; for example, you would like your child to make his/her bed, eat breakfast, brush his teeth, get dressed, and grab his lunch from the refrigerator. Write each step on a slip of paper and have your child arrange
By Tracie Reynolds
the steps in the order he/she wants to perform them. Write or type out the new order on a piece of paper. Then make multiple copies of the routine. Each morning your child will start the routine and mark through or place a check next to the item as he/she completes. Alternatively, you can put one copy in a clear page protector and mark with a dry erase marker each day. Then wipe clean for the next morning. Make sure your child understands that it is important to follow the order exactly. If you find that this order is not working out, just rework the order of items and reprint the master routine with new copies. Once you master the morning routine, you can add an evening routine to prepare for bed and locate items needed for the next day. Mastering a routine helps your child take ownership of his responsibilities; you may choose to reward him/her if you see improvement. The ability to create and move through a routine can later assist your child in making the transition to adulthood by providing a system they can use and apply to daily life.

he words of advice that I have are Mise en place! This means everything in place. This is so important in the kitchen. I know that we have all thought while watching Food Network “If I had all my ingredients measured out like they do I could be a great cook too!” Well, you’re right! I have been going to culinary school since March and this is the most important thing that they drill in our heads. It makes things flow so smoothly! So next time you are preparing a meal take the time to measure, clean, and cut your ingredients and you will see that it makes all the difference in the world. Recipe: Crème Chantilly with Strawberries Mise en Place: chill cream, mixing bowl and whisk. Yield: 2-2 1/2 qt.
Melissa Handley
Ingredients: Heavy cream (chilled) 1 qt. Powdered sugar 3 oz. Vanilla extract 2 tsp.
1. Place the cream in a chilled mixing bowl. Whisk the cream until slightly thickened. 2. Add the sugar and vanilla and continue whisking until desired consistency. The cream should be smooth and light, not grainy. Don’t over whip 3. Chantilly cream can be stored in the refrigerator for several hours. If the cream begins to soften, gently rewhip as necessary. 4. Clean and cut strawberries and place is dessert cups. Add Chantilly cream and grate dark chocolate on top and serve! This desert is really good paired with champagne.

Our web designer, Jeff Griggs from Miraculous Solutions has provided us with an awesome website. I want to thank the Communications Council for all of their hard work. The website would not be the success that it is today without their teamwork. On the Home Page of the website you will find the Members Only section. This section of the website has recently been completed. A new feature you will find under the Members Only section is the Message Board. An additional feature that will be implemented soon is the capability of being able to pay your JL Dues online. We are going to take it even further than that. You will be able to pay your Charity Ball and Spring Market fundraising contribution, make a donation, and vendors can pay for their booths for Spring Market online. have to admit that when Mendi asked me to write an article in the “Our View”, my first thought was “My goodness, I am a mess always running by the seat of my pants and barely holding it all together… what can I possibly have to write about that may add to the lives of the wonderful woman in the JLL?” But then my next thought was that we are a wonderful diverse group of hard working mothers, wives, daughters, sisters, aunts, girlfriends and professionals that all have in common our love for the people in our lives and our community. So if you are organized and have dinner cooked on time most nights and your home and children are all tidy, or if you are like me all scattered with dust bunnies chasing after you and rarely in bed by midnight; I think we can all learn from taking a time out to think about whether or not the activities we do in our lives have purpose. Purpose will have a different definition for each of us, but it is something we all need in order to make sense of the busy crazy lives we lead. I want to thank Mendi for giving me the opportunity to “Take a Time Out” every month to think about what brings purpose to my life. I am certainly not qualified to write a “how to” guide book to a purpose filled life, and I believe that has already been done by wiser folks than me; but I will enjoy sharing my thoughts each month as I go through my own journey and I hope you will share your thoughts with me too! • • • • Do you remember those earlier years just out of high school, perhaps in college or in new jobs or new marriage? The world was at our fingertips. If you were like me, you were skinnier and full of zest and planning to save the world somehow…carpe diem, seize the day…my heart skips a beat just thinking about the excitement I felt back then about my future. But then one day along the way, you wake up and you are in your future. You have the children, a house, a job, church life, perhaps husband or ex-husband (ha)…you are smack dab in the middle of your life running around like crazy being a care giver to most of the people in your lives. It is a delightful whirlwind, but one that requires much from us and likely causes temporary memory loss about who we really are deep inside our hearts. Truly there is no time to really indulge in such things, right!? For me this has been a summer of homecomings with many special unexpected visits from old friends and family that I had not seen in many years. I did not plan this, it just happened - sort of like God, saying to me “Don’t forget who you are Jen, and what really matters .” One friend in particular really set me straight this summer when he made a stop through town on his way to a business trip to Austin. With about a 30 minute notice, I freshened up and met him at the Hole in One so we could catch up on the last 19 years. He really caught me off guard as he was not at all concerned with what all was going on in my life now, but rather how was my journey from Point A to B. What did I learn about life from college forward? Did I make the best of it? Why did I make certain choices? And at the end of our visit, he said the most perplexing thing to me “You are the definition of serendipity and you have lived a very serendipitous life .” After saying goodbyes, I rushed home to look on the internet to see what on earth serendipitous really meant. I was sure it meant, I was a mess, or that I lacked focus? I consulted friends on Facebook and also reached out to a Dutch friend, and also a friend from Finland, Costa Rica, and Germany just to get some international perspective. And I learned from my research that serendipitous basically means “fortunate”. And after all the ups and downs I have experienced these past couple of years, I thought he had lost his mind to tell me I was “fortunate”. Fortunate!? Was he nuts – what was he thinking?! Being a woman, I could not just leave it alone, and I had to call him a week later to try to get more clarity and closure on his parting words to me. Thankfully he humored me enough to spell it out for me “Jen, you set goals in one
direction, yet you always seem to find unexpected treasures along the way.” That really made me pause and think about how I had been viewing everything all wrong. He was right! I HAVE been fortunate! There have been many unexpected treasures found along that way. I have always said my prayers and said thank you to God for this and that, but I had never really stopped to specifically celebrate the unexpected treasures that I found serendipitously (now that is my favorite word). So I went on a mission this summer to specifically look for the treasures, to count my blessings, to appreciate things I had not really paused to appreciate before. I had a new list of obscure things to thank God for each night. Who knew that last minute dinner with an old friend would send me on such a journey! Serendipity! And that brings me back to the woman of JLL. We are all achievement driven women, setting goals for ourselves in our relationships, faith, finances, jobs, and philanthropic activities. I am sure you have landed off course never solving the challenge you were aiming to solve, yet solving something completely unrelated! Or conversely…think about it, how many times have you accomplished a goal, yet the real accomplishment was something you did not even set out to do? A quick personal JLL example I can think of was decorating for 2010 Charity Ball. It was a hectic week at work so I just set up my work station at the Civic Center so I could multi task while we were all there for several days. I was not unique that week as we all had to switch between mommy duties, work responsibilities, and decorating…very hectic. In the end the goal was accomplished, the Ball decorated and beautiful. But the real accomplishment and take away for me was the three women I grew closer to in the experience, three wonderful women that I may have not been able to get closer to otherwise. That was the treasure that I found along the way. I hope you will join me this month in taking a time out to count your blessings, too. Write them down, think about them during your day and before you go to bed. Make a real point to slow down and be grateful for this wonderful journey God has chosen for you and open your eyes to really appreciate the unexpected treasures that come along the way. Just as our children stack up all of their trophies and ribbons with pride, let your list be your trophies of all the wonderful surprises God has provided you. Even my children have joined in keeping a simple journal describing moments they have enjoyed this summer. I peaked at Mattie’s and found the words “watermelon, fire flies, camp, ice-cream for dinner, Jayden’s pond, mission week, sand in my toes…” It is never too early to encourage our children to count their blessings, too! We all can live a serendipitous life discovering unexpected treasures. Our lives will be enriched by being more aware of those treasures. This will be fun! As we all aim to bring purpose to our lives and the lives of our family and community, I hope you will join me in taking a time out to… Count Your Blessings.

School Supply & Backpack Drive By Teri Nichols, School Supply Chair
A
nother successful school supply and backpack drive has been completed. A survey was sent out to all Angelina county schools just before the summer and we received an awesome response back. Many schools included a note of appreciation for the League’s help over the past years. “We appreciate any and all help as it is so needed in our community,” stated Coston Elementary. The supplies began arriving in from Brookshire Brothers & Office Depot on Monday, Aug. 9. With the help of Tracy Nichols and our strong young boys Hunter & Holt Nichols, the supplies were unloaded and sorted, ready for the 20092010 Provisionals to began their job of pick-up and delivery. After three days of scheduled pick-ups and deliveries all schools received their much needed materials by Friday, Aug. 13. Many Provisionals were met with smiling faces from the staff at the receiving schools. The backpack drive collected over 500 backpacks that were delivered along with the school supplies. Thanks to all who helped in making this a success. Way to go!!
