DAVAO City -- Davao region’s share in the annual national budget for its development programs is still insufficient. Former Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte and Regional Development Council (RDC) 11 chairperson for 2010 to 2013, in her final repor t said the council still sees the need to intensify the lobbying for increased budgetar y support for the region’s development programs. She repor ted that in fiscal year 2013 for instance, only 34 percent of the RDC 11-endorsed budget proposal was included in the General Appropriations Act (GAA) with Department of Health getting 20 percent, Department of Science and Technology (41 percent) and Department of Agriculture (66 percent).
OTING the threats the city is facing from a changing climate, local government executives yesterday vowed to pursue “green” policies and programs that will make a climate-resilient Cagayan de Oro. Local government officials, led by Mayor Oscar Moreno, however, admitted they don’t have
the expertise needed to make this “ambitious” program a reality, thus, they need the help of all sectors,
especially civil society organizations (CSOs) a nd non-government organizations (NGOs) that are cha mpioning climate cha nge mitigation and adaptation, and disaster risk reduction programs. “Programs on disaster mitigation must go together with programs that will make our communities resilient to the impacts of climate change Officials/PAGE 11

THE Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) has pushed for the deployment of renewable energy projects to ensure power supply is enough to support economic activities in the region. “Ensuring sufficient and reliable power supply for Mindanao is particularly crucial to attract more investments to achieve broad-based growth and longterm sustainable development,” Romeo Montenegro, director for investment promotion and public affairs at MinDA, said in a statement. Montenegro said that despite a number of coal projects lined up for Mindanao, there is still a need to source power from reneweable energy projects-hydro, solar, wind, geothermal--to maintain an “ideal” balance of energy projects/PAGE 11
