Anti-smoking drive BUTUAN City– The Department of Health – Center for Health Development (DOH - CHD) Caraga has intensified its campaign against tobacco use, especially in public places and public vehicles. Ten Filipinos die every hour, according to Delma Legaspi, non-communicable disease coordinator of DOHCHD Caraga. “Tobacco can make you impotent, can cause depression and affect your hormones, among others.” Legaspi also said that smoking during pregnancy leads to: 1) Spontaneous Abortion; 2) Ectopic pregnancy; 3) Lowbirth weight babies; and 4) Long-term effects on growth and development of the child. “Father’s and other people smoking can affect the fetus.

MALAYBALAY City – Only two of the 70 hotels, inns and resorts in Bukidnon province have been accredited by the Department of Tourism (DOT), Catalino Chan III, tourism regional director, said.

AVAO City -- The power situation in Mindanao has improved significantly from power deficiency figures posted daily since the start of the year, according to figures from the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines.
Figures on the NGCP Web site on Tuesday showed that Mindanao had 68-megawatt (MW) excess power at 1,375 MW system capacity against peak demand of 1,307 MW. While NGCP officials here could not immediately provide details on the current power status, the Mindanao Development Aut horit y (MinDA), which has been surplus/PAGE 11

TSI, Davao coop seek ERC’s nod on power deal By IRENE DOMINGO Reporter
ABOITIZPOWER Cor p. subsidiary Therma South, Inc. (TSI) and Davao del Sur Electric Cooperative, Inc. (DASURECO) have sought the approval of the Energy Regulator y Commission (ERC) of their power supply agreement. In a joint petition dated May 30, TSI and DASURECO asked the ERC to approve the electricity supply agreement that the two parties signed on May 15. Under the agreement, TSI will supply 5 megawatts (M W) of elec t r icit y to DASURECO for 25 years upon start of commercial operation of TSI’s new plant. TSI is building a 300-MW coal-fired power plant on a site which straddles Davao City and municipality of Sta. Cruz in Davao del Sur. The facility is scheduled to be operational by 2015. T he p e t it ion d id n’t cite DASUR ECO’s tota l electricit y requirement, but noted that the power distributor currently sources bulk of its needs from the Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corp.
