Davao’s rice bowl TAGUM City -- Davao del Norte is providing 50 percent of the rice requirement in the Davao Region, said Department of Agriculture National Rice Program coordinator Asst. Secretary Dante S. Delima, as he graced the opening of the 46th Araw ng Davao del Norte/Kadagayaan Festival. He presented no detailed data on the rice production performance of the province but he said Davao del Norte has the edge to produce more rice compared with Davao del Sur, which is also a rice-producing area because “it has wide production area.” Delima, however, asked local government units (LGUs) of Davao del Norte to observe proper delineation of areas for other development concerns such as those on housing and real estate, commercial and industrial without necessarily putting at stake the rice production areas of the province. He made the call as he expressed ways of sustaining the favorable rice production performance of the province despite conversion of rice production areas to other development purposes.
