Briefly Coco exports up THE volume and value of coconut products shipped to overseas buyers in the first quarter soared as nut production increased and demand for coco oil in key markets strengthened, government data showed.

Exports rose by 96.88 percent to 391, 231.76 metric tons (MT) in the first three months of the year from 198, 717.22 a year earlier, according to Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) data.

The shipments were valued at $292.22 million, up 23.17 percent from $237.25 million in the same comparable period.

Coconut oil remains the major coconut export commodity with total shipments of 222,299.96 MT valued at $202.63 million. In value terms the shipments were up by 36.48 percent from $148.47 million. By volume, coconut oil shipments rose by 108.98 percent from 106,371.53 MT.

DavNor a billionnaire province by 2014 TAGUM CITY, Davao del Nor te -- The cou nt r y’s ‘Banana Capital’ will be joining t he leag ue of billionnaire provinces as it will exceed the P1-billion mark in its annual budget next year.

Governor Rodolfo del Rosario announced that the Province of Davao del Norte will hit a major breakthrough in its annual budget, with the projected income of P1,082,601,958.10 in 2014.

The proposed budget was endorsed by the Provincial Development Council (PDC), during its regular meeting last June 19 at the Bulwagan

ng Lalawigan.

“Billionaryo na po ang ating probinsya by next yea r,” del Rosa r io told members of the local media at the Kapihan sa Kapitolyo yesterday.

The Governor said the bulk of the 2014 budget will still come from the internal revenue allotment (IR A) share of the province, which contributes about 80 percent of the total budget of the province.

He explained the province is yet highly dependent on the IRA since it has no taxing power, unlike the cities.

However, he said the

province is trying make up for the inadequacy by improving its local income through strengthening of its economic enter prise development.

To beef up local revenue source, t he prov ince is further improving its new P242-million Davao del Norte Sports and Cultural Center to lure more people to use the facility.

“We will encourage more people to appreciate and use the facility for it to earn more income,” he said.

Del Rosario said more entertainment facilities will be put up in the area to

increase the number of users and visitors.

He also identified the three provincial hospitals as among the local income generating facilities.

T he prov i nce sha l l continue to allocate P28 million for the PhilHealth coverage of poor families in 2014. “ We e x p e c t t h e s e indigent families to avail of the services of our three provincial hospitals, thereby creating more income for the province,” he said.

Gerry’s Grill eyes 11 more branches in second half HOMEGROWN restaurant chain Gerry’s Grill will open 11 more branches in the next six months as it rides on robust consumer spending and the increasing number of shopping malls.

Next month, a branch each will be opened at SM Southmall in Las Pinas City and at the Veranza Mall in General Santos City.

“The demand for dining continues to grow with the economy picking up, and with more malls opening in major cities around the country. We hope to ride on the surge of demand in food service,” Gerry Apolinario, president and chief executive

of Gerry’s Grill operator Prime Pacif ic Gri l l Inc (PPGI), said in a statement.

The other new branches will be opened in Tarlac in September; Tuguegarao City in October; at Fairview Terraces in Quezon City by November; and a branch each in Binan City, Butuan City, and Robinsons Place Malolos, Bulacan by December.

NTC issues rules on cable, net signal theft T H E Nat ion a l Te l e c o m m u n i c a t i o n s Commission (NTC) has issued draft implementing rules and regulations (IRR) for a new law criminalizing c a ble T V (C AT V ) a nd Internet signal theft.

Under the draft rules, any person or private entity is prohibited from intercepting or receiving any signal or service offered over a CATV or cable internet signal by tapping, making or causing to be made, any connection to an existing CATV or cable internet network without the authority of the concerned operator.

The rules also prohibit the recording, reproduction, distribution, import or sale of any intercepted or received CATV or cable Internet signal without the authority of the service provider.

The ser v ice prov ider can disconnect immediately the CATV or cable Internet s er v ic e of a ny pers on, natural or judicial, without the need for a court order or administrative order and deny restoration of the service.

“Any person found by f i na l judg ment to have c om m it t e d a ny of t he proh ibited ac t s ... sha l l be meted the penalty of

imprisonment of not less than two years but no more than five years or a fine of not less than P50,000 nor more than P100,000 or both at the discretion of the court,” the draft read.

“If t he of fender is a corporation or association, t he president, manager, managing partner or any officer of the corporation or partnership who directly participated in the violation shall be held liable,” it added.

The NTC said t he gover n ment i s sued t he rules to protect the general public a nd leg it imate operators of CATV and cable Internet service from unauthorized connection or tapping to existing facilities through wired, wireless, electromagnetic and other means of cable pilferage.

Ayala Land to offer P21B worth of corporate bonds AYA L A L a nd I nc . ha s approved the issuance of up to P21 billion worth of corporate bonds to be sold in a general public offering.

Robredo widow vows to champion FOI bill

MANILA—Neophy te congresswoman, Camarines Sur Representative Leni Robredo promised to champion the passage of the Freedom of Information (FOI) bill when it makes a comeback in the 16th Congress.

“I believe that the FOI bill should be passed,” adding that the Malacanang-backed version filed in the last Congress was already a good bill.

A month before the opening of the new Congress, advocates led by the FOI Youth Initiative and the Right to Know, Right Now Coalition (R2KRN) called for support for

the bill to ensure it is passed. The groups also asked President Benigno Aquino III to certify it as urgent to fast-track its approval.

“We affirm that our right to information enshrined in the Constitution must be institutionalized through the FOI Law to guarantee that transparency among public officials and employees becomes a norm and not simply a discretion of individuals bound by their terms of office,” FYI said in a statement.

“I am f u lly aware of how hard it is to be a local government official. If their constituents elected them for several terms in office, that is reward enough as it means that the people trust them.

However, government must also recognize their hard work and I am glad President Aquino recognizes this when

he signed House Bill 4357 into law and also for the Civil Service Commission’s issuance of its IRR,” he said.

the commission of a crime, makes use, takes advantage of or, prof ited from the use of children, including a ny person who abuses his/her authority over the child or who, with abuse of confidence, takes advantage or instigates the commission of the crime, shall be imposed the penalty prescribed by law for the crime committed in its maximum period,” the proposed law said.

“Parents,” as used in the measure, shall mean the biological parents, adoptive parents, or individuals who have custody over the child.

The bill states, “A child 15 years of age or under at the time of the commission of the offense shall be exempt from criminal liability.” However, the child shall be subjected to an intervention program pursuant to the provisions of the proposed statute.

Furthermore, a child above 15 years but below 18 years of age shall likewise be exempt from criminal liability and be subjected to an intervention program unless he or she has acted with discernment, in which case, such child shall be

subjected to the appropriate proc e e d i ngs u nder t he proposed act.

However, it added, “The exemption from criminal liability herein established does not include exemption from civil liability, which sha l l be enforced in accordance with existing laws.”

The bill also provides for t he t ra nsfer of t he super v ision and control of the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Council from the Department of Justice to the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

Rescue fund for coops attracts legislative support COOP-NATCCO party-list Rep. Cresente Paez said he would propose in the coming 16th Congress the creation of a Provident Endowment and Viability Enhancement Fund for the rehabilitation of cooperative banks in financial distress.

“The proposed program seeks to transform cooperat ive ba n k s i nto progressive economies of scale through the infusion and provision of capital and regulatory incentives that shall be included in my proposal,” Paez said.

Paez said cooperative banks are an integral part of the banking system and the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) so recognizes their role in nation building.

“As one of t he v ita l sources of f ina ncing in the countryside, the rural banking sector continues to deliver sustainable and market-driven f inancia l services to the agricultural sector and the enterprising households,” Paez said.

Paez expressed apprehension over reports that some cooperative banks are in trouble and also under t he “Prompt Corrective Action (PCA) by the BSP due to capital deficiency.”

The PCA is a mechanism allowing troubled banks to recover long before a critical point of no return is reached.

This is the period when the BSP typically handholds problematic lenders out of their problems by pointing them in the right direction.

MAKATI – Philippine Long Distance Company, Inc. (PLDT) and Smart Communications, Inc. President and Chief Executive Officer Napoleon Nazareno revealed a glimpse of the country’s telecommunications future, saying, it rest on PLDT and Smart Communications’ “fiber”.

Speaking at the Annual Stockholders Meeting on June 14, at the MakatiShangrila, Nazareno said the year 2012 was a year of transition for PLDT. ‘ We u n d e r t o o k t h e i nt e g r at i o n o f D i g i t a l and Sun Cellular into the group. We completed ahead of schedule our network transformation program, fortifying our advantage in the delivery of data services over our fixed and wireless networks,” he said.

He admitted that they were faced with intense competition last year, hence, the group strengthened its position in the mobile business. “We rationalized our business portfolio leading to the sale of our outsourcing business and moved towards greater involvement in the multimedia space. Our financial and operating results were shaped by this transition process.”

Mr. Nazareno revealed during the meeting that s e r v i c e re ve nu e s f rom continuing operations rose 10% year-on-year to P160.2 billion in 2012, following a 13% increase in wireless business revenues to P108.9 billion and a 4% rise in fixed line revenues to P51.3 billion.

The BPO business registered revenues of P9.1 billion in 2012. With the intended sale of the BPO business, its financials were classified as discontinued operations, he said.

He said that consolidated EBITDA dipp ed by 3% to P77.3 billion mainly

due to higher selling and promotions expenses and subsidies, which formed part of their response to competition in the wireless space, as well as a P3.8 billion charge in connection with various to comp etition programs. Consequently, c o n s o l i d a t e d E B I T DA margin declined to 46% from 52% in 2012. He said excluding the MRP charge, EBITDA would have been higher year-on-year by P1.1 billion, and EBITDA 48%.

Reported net income rose by 12% to P35.5 billion in 2012. Core net income, excluding exceptional items, declined by 4% to P37.3 billion.

“Despite challenging operating conditions and a hig h le vel of capit a l expenditures this year, free cash flow remained robust allowing the declaration of 100% of core earnings as dividends. A total of P172 per share was paid out to shareholders representing 2012 cone earnings, consisting of P120 or 70% regular dividend and P52 or 30% special dividend. This is the sixth consecutive year of 100% dividend payout. The dividend yield enjoyed by PLDT’s shareholders remains one of the highest in the region, he revealed.

Mr. Nazareno cited a few highlights of 2012 in the same meeting, as follows:

• P L D T remained market leader with a combined subscriber base that grew to about 75.3 million at the end of 2012, consisting of 69.9

million cellular subscribers, 3 . 3 m i l l i on bro a db and subscribed, and 2.1 million fixed line subscribers. At the end of March this year, its combined subscriber base rose to 77 million;

• In 2012, it completed out two-year network transformation program which involved a total investment of P67 bi l lion, and w hich has resulted in an unparalleled network with capability and capacity to deliver quality s e r v i c e. T h i s i n clu d e d the upgrade of their access networks with the deployment of single RAN or radio access networks, expansion of 3G coverage to over 70%, and 1,000 operational LTE sites;

• Almost 100% of their Metro Manila sites are with fiber and IPready, while 68% of our provincial sites are IP-ready.

Their core network has been re-architectured to integrate the PLDT, Smart, Sun and Digital networks.

• T h e i r transmission network remains unmatche d by competition with 54,000 kilometers of fiber projected to reach 60,000 kilometers by end-2013, comprising their domestic fiber optic network or DFON. Their four cable landing stations provide them with international capacity;

• H i g h speed broadband is simply not possible to grow and sustain without an extensive, robust and resilient fiber network. That is why PLDT’s fibernetwork advantage gives them a decisive edge not only in the traditional fixed and mobile business, but more importantly, in data, which is the sunrise business of today and the future. This has

for example enabled them to rapidly roll-out PLDT’s fiber-to-the-home service and Smart’s LTE. That is why they say in PLDT that: The Future is in our Fiber.

“Let me now describe to you the outlook for PLDT, beginning with our existing businesses. We are seeing a structural change in our revenue mix as legacy revenue streams from international and national long distance continue to decline. Cellular and SMS revenues remain relatively stable as the market approaches maturity,” Nazareno added.

He said broadband and data remain the bright spots for the business, growing double digit year-on-year, and as such, will be their focus going forward.

“The outlook for broadband in the Philippines remains very attractive with the Philippine population entering a ‘demographic window’ where a large part of the population is young, have improving purchasing power, are literate and many are already enthusiastic users of data services,” he said.

Thoug h smar tphone penetration remains low, take-up has increased and there are signs that greater adoption may take place as more affordable handsets become available in the market, Nazareno said.

PLDT, he said, is very optimistic about the potential of the pay TV industry in the Philippines, and CignalTV’s competitive advantages that can give it a strong position in the market.

“As of this time, CignalTV has already signed up half a m i l l i on s u b s c r i b e r s .

and 22 are high definition (HD). CignalTV is expected to be EBITDA positive in the second half of 2013. We are now working on making Cignal TV content available to customers of our fiber-tothe home offering. Moving forward, there will be more and more opportunity to bundle content with our cel lu lar and f ixe d line business offerings,” Mr. Nazareno revealed.

Nazareno assured that 2013 is the year when PLDT returns to growth. “Our first five months’ preliminary results are already pointing i n t h i s d i re c t i on . O u r acquisition of Digitel and the network transformation

program had a dampening effect on our 2012 financials.

NGCP keeps up obligations to communities it operates

THE National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) continues to keep up with its social obligation to communities where it is operating.

This was stressed by Beth Ladaga, NGCP Public Affairs Officer for Misamis Oriental, citing as an example the dist r ibut ion of s cho ol supplies to hundreds of students in Villanueva and Tagoloan towns at the start of classes early this month.

More than 500 pupils of Kirahon Elementar y S c h o o l , K i r a h on , S a n Martin, Villanueva, and Natumolan Elementar y School in Tagoloan, received schools supplies from heads

of transmission lines in the areas NGCP are operating.

Ms. Ladaga said the schools have been prioritized due to their proximity to the “backbone project” the NGCP is currently working, citing the schools contribution in terms of securing NGCP’s facilities and working components.

“In fact, this goes beyond being a corporate social responsibility project. This is a way of giving back to the community for hosting NGCP’s facilities,” Ms. Ladaga said.

Aside from distributing schools supplies NGCP engineers had brief parents and pupils on safety precautions near the lines

and on the penalties for t i n ke r i ng w it h NG C P infrastructures.

In other parts of the country, medical missions have been conducted, like the one in Sitio Simbrero in the village of Ambuklao in Benguet. Last June 18, there were a total of 343 residents who received medical, surgical, and dental services as well as medicines in thas medical mission conducted

by NGCP in partnership with Hyosung Corporation.

But her blood type was very rare and the doctors did not know if they could find anyone in time with her same blood type who was also willing to give their blood.

Then, they discovered that the girl’s 7 year old brother had the same blood type as hers.

The doctor led her brother into his office to tell him that his baby sister was very sick and unless she received some blood, the angels would probably need to take her to heaven.

The brother’s eyes filled with tears.

For a few moments, he tried to hold back his strong feelings of fear and sadness, then he said softly to the doctor: “I’ll give my blood to my sister.”

Later, as the young boy watched his blood going through a tube into his sister, he became even more nervous and afraid.

The doctor could see the little boy’s fear and told him: “It will be over very soon.”

The boy started to cry and said: “So now is when I’m going to die.”

From the very first time the doctor had asked this boy to give his blood for his sister, the young boy thought it meant he needed to give ALL of his blood and die so his sister could live.

Yet this little boy loved his sister that much, He was giving his life for her.

We can probably attribute this to Rizal’s upbringing and to his experiences as a student in Europe.

A lt hou g h he wa s t he youngest child born into the wealthy Mercado family, Rizal did not grow up spoiled. Craig said Rizal’s maternal uncle Gregorio made sure he earned his “candy money” and that he valued rapidity in work.

In Europe, these lessons were useful in guiding him away from many temptations. Contrary to stories that depicted Rizal as a drinker or womanizer, Craig said Rizal actually spent much of his time and money on books, mostly secondhand.

Historian Ambeth Ocampo also told of the hero’s frugality in his book “Rizal Without the Overcoat.” He said that in one party, Rizal even asked his friends to chip in for the champagne he brought, saying he just paid in advance for everyone.

In the psychology of money, the behavior of spending is no exception. Your money mindset is what you become.

People are generally classified into three equations of behavioral spending patterns.

Equation A: INCOME – EXPENSE = SAVINGS. Most individuals belong to this group. What is left of their income after all the expenses have been deducted becomes their savings. For most, it usually doesn’t amount to much since the discipline of strict budgeting and forced saving is dearth and in need of significant improvement. Emphasis is less on savings but more on expenses. At the very least, they are a bit better off than those who never even have meager savings to start with.

Equation B: EXPENSES – INCOME = DEBT. People in this group are those who don’t pay much particular attention to what their spending levels are. They think of spending f irst, of ten exceeding t heir budget at the month’s end only to realize that when the salary arrives, it is not even enough to pay off what was spent!

Money lessons from Jose Rizal

hen it comes to knowledge and talent combined, no Filipino can compare to our national hero Jose Rizal.

He was the ultimate Renaissance man, with expertise in a variety of fields – science, agriculture, literature, the arts, linguistics, and even martial arts.

It may not be well-known to many but apart from being a gifted scholar, artist, and fighter, Rizal was also a very practical man who knew the value of money and was smart in handling it.

In fact, when a ticket he bought with two friends won the lottery in 1892, Rizal did not spend his share of the prize money like a “one day millionaire.” Instead, he made an investment.

According to the website www.dapitan.com, after giving part of his winnings to his father and a friend, Rizal used the money to buy a property near Dapitan, where he was exiled.

On this land, he built a school and a hospital, where he taught children and treated the poor for free. His income came from patients who came from all points of the country and who were more than willing to pay to be treated by him. Based on other accounts, he also had an abaca business and a store there.

Apart from investing money and taking part in trade, Rizal also knew how to save. In the 1913 book “Lineage, Life, and Labors of Jose Rizal,” historian Austin Craig said Rizal saved over 5,000 pesos in just seven months. Its name signifies synergy among different stakeholders – Pagtutulungan sa kinabukasan: Ikaw, Bangko, Industriya, Gobyerno [Working towards the future: You (members and partners), Banks (and other financial institutions), Industry (including real estate, business), Government (central government, local government, government agencies)].

The Fund received a boost in its membership when its new charter was signed into law last July 2009. Republic Act No. 9679, or the “Home Development Mutual Fund Law of 2009,” mandates the universal membership of all Filipino workers, whether they are located within the country or overseas, whether they belong to the formal or informal sector, whether they work in government or in the private sector. Basically, starting January 1, 2010, all Filipinos earning at least PhP 1,000 a month are mandated to register as Pag-IBIG Fund members.

One of the remarkable effects of the universal coverage of Pag-IBIG membership is the inclusion of informal workers such as household service providers, transportation workers, market vendors, and other minimum-wage earners into the Fund.

As Pag-IBIG members, the Filipino workers receive access to the Fund’s savings program and loan programs.

The loan programs include housing loans for retail buyers and institutional loans for partners such as developers, local government units, employers, employee associations, and other member associations. Housing loan proceeds can be used by retail borrowers to finance the purchase However, even if we cannot match his intellectual and artistic gifts, we can still emulate him in his approach to work and money.

To me, this is an admission that for its first five year period, the program failed to bring any lasting benefit to its beneficiaries, as shown by the fact that there is no evident improvement in the beneficiaries’ financial status

or economic activity despite receiving money from the government. It appears that the only benefit the families can show off from the dole outs is the promotion of their children to the next higher rank as elementary and high school students, although they have not even finished elementary or high school.

-ooo REVERTING TO POVERTY AFTER CASH DOLE OUTS: As things are turning out, the only clear benefit that the conditional c a s h t r a n sfer prog r a m beneficiaries derived from it was their having money to buy their daily food, and, perhaps some of their other basic necessities, to make them survive from one dole out to the next dole out.

As it were, the dole outs, in billions of pesos yet, may not have really helped the poor and the needy, in the sense of a marked improvement in their lives. Despite the dole outs, the poor remain

or repair of their chosen residential unit or lot property.

Institutional housing loan borrowers may use their loan proceeds in the development of a housing project for their chosen market or beneficiaries. A second loan program, the short-term loan program, includes multipurpose loans and calamity loans. Multi-purpose loan proceeds can augment the finances of the members and can be used for education, health and wellness, business capital, among others. Calamity loans are released among member-borrowers residing in areas affected by calamity such as typhoons and earthquakes.

The Pag-IBIG savings program requires the memberworker to remit a monthly savings worth PhP 100 and the member’s employer to remit an employer counterpart of the same amount worth PhP 100. Self-employed members may shoulder the employer counterpart, to maintain the total monthly savings of PhP 200. The monthly savings may also be higher than the minimum, as desired by the members and their employers. The monthly savings add up throughout the membership period of the members and comprise their Total Accumulated Value or TAV. The TAV determines the amount to be loaned for the short-term loans and the dividend amount to be credited at the end of each year a Filipino worker is an active Pag-IBIG member.

Some 60 women par ticipants f rom the five (5) municipalities of Camiguin benef ited to enhance their skills on food processing as well as some scientific techniques coming from the expert.

T he whole d ay a ct iv it y wa s conducted in Bagsakan, Mambajao, Camig uin by Mr. Niño T. Lazo, Operations and Marketing Manager of Darling Foods, Cagayan de Oro City.

The training aimed to improve the livelihoods of women by giving them various cooking methods and processing machinery.

The actual demonstration was on meat processing since it’s the common preserved food in the market.

Among the modules include: chicken tocino, pork tocino, longganisa, meat patty, chorizo and bacon.

The Provincial Government of Camiguin led by Governor Jurdin Jesus M. Romualdo was very thankful because the province was given the opportunity to learn with the hope that the participants could start and apply their skills soon with enough capital.

Mrs. Anino says that she very thankful to the Department of Labor and Employment for the free food processing demo since she was able to apply it in her small business in the cock arena (“bulangan”) where she sells beer and other liquor. She also enthused that the food she will serve will surely improve her income.

Mrs. Montalaba says she is grateful that she was able to attend the said activity because knowledge acquired in food processing and that she is very willing to share her learning to her members being the president of the Women’s Association in Mercy Village.

As said by Mrs. Jennylyn, their members were interested and willing to learn and they’re planning to start a business, once enough capital is available.

Elipe during its meeting last week tasked the Technical Working Group (TWG) to continue the study of proposed parameters for the grant of incentives for green buildings that will be constructed in Cagayan de Oro. In a broader regional perspective, emergency preparedness is one of the key elements of the human security agenda of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). In 2009, APEC Leaders reaffirmed the importance of enhancing human security and reducing the threat of disruptions to business and trade in the Asia-Pacific region.

APEC's Emergency Preparedness

Working Group was formed to address this issue and to play a constructive role in enabling the region to better prepare for and respond to emergencies and disasters.

Climate change and disaster risk management is also one of five proposed areas of priority for the Philippines for the 2015 APEC Summit.

The PASCN was established in 1996 through an administrative order as the Philippines' response to the APEC Leaders Education Initiative which aims to develop regional cooperation in higher education and research.

Manto said the Taganito project is the biggest mining investment in the country so far at 1.5 billion dollars.

He said at least 2,350 workers will be employed once the company starts commercial production in September.

He said, skilled workers f rom C ora l Bay Nickel Cor poration, a sister company of THPAL based in Palawan are conducting the training of locallysourced workers for them learn the skill needed once the company will start its full operation.

Manto said the lifespan of THPAL is 30 years.

He added t hat t he company will produce at least 30,000 metric tons of nickel sulfide and 2600 metric tons of cobalt sulfide from 4.8 million weight metric tons of waste ore per year.

Manto said these nickel and cobalt sulfides will be sent to Japan for another refinery process.

The mine waste which is composed of limonite ore from Taganito Mining Corporation in Claver will be used by THPAL, Manto explained.

“This mine waste from the nickel mining operation which has no value, will be bought for 15 to 20 US dollars per metric ton,” he said adding this would translate into additional jobs.

Aside from mine waste, low grade ore will also be used for the production, he said.

Bukidnon IP community benefits from A Brown medical mission

MEMBERS of the medical-dental mission composed of doctors, dentists, nurses, midwives, BHWs, nutrition scholars, agriculturist, LCR staff and field personnel of ABERDI happily pose after a tiring yet fulfilling day of giving out outreach service to the people of Kaanibongan, Kalabugao, Impasugong, Bukidnon.

IMPASUG-ONG, Bukidnon --- A Brown Energy Resources and Development Inc (ABERDI, a subsidiary of A Brown Group of Companies has again shown its extraordinary care for the Higaonon community in the hinterlands of Bukidnon.

In partnership with the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) regional office X and the local government of Impasug-ong, Bukidnon, the joint medicaldental mission conducted June 14, 2013 reached out and offered free health care and other medical services to some 300 local residents of Sitio Kaanibongan, Kalabugao, Imasug-ong, Bukidnon, most of whom belonged to the Higaonon Tribe.

Packed with various medical supplies, the medical-dental team, which comprised of doctors, dentists, nurses, barangay health workers, barangay nutrition scholars and ABERDI employees, managed the long and wearing trip to Sitio Kaanibongan, Kalabugao, a farflung barangay near the border of Agusan del Sur and Bukidnon.

Notwithstanding the rough and rocky road and the unpredictable weather, the team safely arrives in the place and joined the other team members from the LGU of Impasugong, Bukidnon who traveled a day earlier to prepare the venue of the medical-dental mission.

Aside from the actual

dispensation of medical services, members of the mission also shared with the beneficiaries the importance of herbal medicines especially to mothers.

Simultaneously, there were lectures on proper dental care and demonstration of proper tooth brushing among children and dispensing of available dental medicines.

Also simultaneous with the conduct of medical-dental mission, a separate team from the local civil registrar and the municipal agricultural office sent

by Impasugong Mayor Mario Okinlay conducted on the spot birth and death registration, distribution of certificates and vaccination/immunization of domestic animals.

Indeed, many benefited from the activity from infants to senior citizens. The beneficiaries expressed their gratitude to the group for conducting the free clinic in their area. . Other needs and concerns unmet during the activity due to unavailability were taken down by members of the team while conducting an informal interview with the residents.

The conduct of medicaldental mission of ABERDI is the company’s response to its corporate social responsibility – investing in socially relevant community projects that will create long-lasting impact as well as build lasting partnership with the host communities.
