Briefly More teachers THE Department of Education (DepEd) this year will be seeking more teachers as it has opened the highest number of teaching slots in the Department’s history. Dodong Atillo DepEd XI spokesman said that the D e p ar t m e nt h a s a p p r ove d 61,510 teaching positions for the schoolyear 2013-2014, which is a huge increase compared to previous hiring of an average to about 10,000 teachers. He said that in Region XI alone DepEd is seeking to hire 2,923 more teachers which compared to previous years they were hiring only about 500 teachers. Atillo said that this does not include those hired by the local school board and those hired by the respective DepEd offices in the region. “This year we might reduce out the teacher gap, we are really excited this year,” Atillo said.
Open for business SOCIAL Security System (SSS) branches nationwide will open for business on four consecutive Saturdays in June to enable household employers a n d d o m e s t i c w o r ke r s o r ‘kasambahay’, such as maids, nursemaids or yaya, gardeners, cooks and laundry women, to register with SSS. S S S C a g ay a n d e O r o branch will be opened to issue social security (SS) numbers for domestic workers as well as household employer ID numbers on June 8, 15, 22 and 29 to facilitate their mandatory SSS membership as provided under the Kasambahay Law and the Social Security Law, said Lawyer Edwin Halo, SSS branch manager. The Kasambahay Law, or Republic Act No. 10361, was signed into law on January 19, 2013 to ensure the social protection of household employees under various government agencies, which include the SSS, Philippine Health Insurance Corporation and Pag-IBIG Fund.

MALAYBALAY City — The campaign against child labor in Bukidnon is gaining headway, with at least 2,000 children taken out of the labor force from November 2011 to March 2013, the International Labor Organization (ILO) reported. The ILO report said that out of the 2,500 listed in 2010, 2,000 had been taken out of the categories of actual child laborers or children at risk of becoming child laborers. Out of a listing of 1,500 ch i ld ren i n ch i ld l ab or, 1,087 had been taken off the list while 998 out of 1,000 younger siblings of chi ld labourers or those at risk of also becoming child labourers were also delisted using a combi nat ion of t utor ia l, psychosocial, and logistic
interventions implemented by the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office. Hector Tuburan, Jr. ILO Bukidnon coordinator, said they had accomplished 83.4% of its target or 2,085 children out of 2,500, have been kept off the labor force from November 2011 to March 2013 while 99.8% of children at risk of becoming laborers, or 998 out 1,000 had been withdrawn from the control list. Tuburan said the figure is expected to improve even more in June and September as soon as they validate enrolment of those who received intervention in the control list. The ILO headway/PAGE 11
