Briefly Palm oil benefits THE Philippine Palm Oil Development Council Inc. (PPD CI) d i s c u s s e d t h e economic progress brought about by planting and exporting palm oil and its health and environmental benefits in the recently concluded 8th National Palm Oil Congress here. Dr. Pablito P. Pamplona of PPDCI answered some concerns regarding the effect of palm oil plantations in the environment. He said as opposed to the belief that palm oil causes floods during the rainy season, the truth is, it adds more life to the earth and makes the environment healthier, livable and sustainable. A study shows that it reduces daily temperature fluctuation and maintains high relative humidity. It also helps mitigate climate change through high biomass production and storage of high amounts of carbon dioxide in the soil, higher than those of trees in virgin forests.

Sawmills closure THE lower demand for sawlogs brought about by closure of some wood processing plants has affected the total volume of sawlogs produced in Region 10 during 2012. Repor ts gathered by the National Economic and D eve l o p m e n t A u t h o r i t y (NEDA) from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Regional Office 10 show that the total annual production of sawlogs in the region decreased by 63 percent in 2012 compared to the production volume of 29,862.18 cubic meters in 2011. These plants could not renew their permits as they failed to satisfy the requirement of Executive Order (EO) No. 23 for wood processing plants to present proof of sustainable sources of legally cut logs for a period of at least five years, said Engineer Cecilio Y. Clarete, NEDA-10 Chief Economic Development Specialist, in a media forum held recently here.

ADB WARNS ASIA:

Change energy use or suffer consequences

T

By BONG FABE Associate Editor

HE Asian Development Bank (ADB) has warned that unless the Asian region overhauls its energy use and detours from the dangerous and unsustainable energy path the continent is following, it will undermine the so-called Asian Century Growth scenario as it will effectively put a wedge in energy access between the rich and poor as well as open up the region to environmental disaster of the magnitude never seen before.

In its 317-page Asian Development Outlook 2013, the ADB underscored the need for Asian countries to deliver energy to all its citizens while scaling back its reliance on fossil fuels. Asia must change the energy/PAGE 11

The Asian Development Bank urges Asian countries to change the way they consume energy and start using clean energy or suffer the human, economic and environmental consequences. THE Department of Energy apparently has got its figures wrong about solar energy causing power rates to shoot up in Mindanao.

POLL WATCH
