Briefly Treasure hunt THE Sun Cellular Treasure Hunt billed as the “Samal Island Fun with Sun” is set this Saturday, May 25, at 5:00 a.m. at the Baywalk in Babak of the Island Garden City of Samal. “It’s a scavenger hunt with a twist,” said former Department of Tourism (DOT) regional director Sonia Garcia at the SCOOP (Sports Communicators Organization of the Phils.) forum held at the Royal Mandaya Hotel recently here. Garcia said each team will be composed of two players regardless of gender for a registration fee of P250 inclusive of the race bibs, hosted dinner, cold beer, ID, certificate and raffle. Deadline of registration and race briefing is on May 24, Friday at 3 p.m. at the People’s Park in Davao City, she said.

Corn Value GENERAL Santos Cit y -The value of corn produced in Region 12 last year had reached a staggering P15.6 billion, a regional Department of Agriculture (DA) official said. Zaldy Boloron, DA-12 corn program coordinator, said in the 130-page “Regional Corn Roadmap CY (Calendar Year) 2012 to 2017” presentation that corn production volume in the four-province, five-city region last year was 1.20 million metric tons (MT), up 2.63 percent from 2011’s 1.2 million MT. “[The strong corn production performance] was due to the wide area suitable for corn production, availability of high quality seeds and access to technology,” Boloron said. Land planted to corn last year in Region 12, also called the Soccsksargen region, was 429,319 hectares (ha), he noted.

A US-based Filipino solar power company is urging Mindanao electric cooperatives to consider solar power as an alternative to expensive modular diesel generators proposed by the national government. “If the 33 electric cooperatives in Mindanao will allocate 56 hectares of open land near the (Mindanao) grid, we will install 80 megawatts (MW) within one year,” said Winston L. Mendoza, chief executive officer of US-based Mendoza Solar LLC and chair of local affiliate Lim Solar Philippines. Mr. Mendoza is one of the featured speakers for the Mindanao Congress of the Advocates for Renewable Energy and Rural Electrification and Development (MinCARED 2013) scheduled for May 27Outlook/PAGE 11

HE Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) has expressed confidence that the island of Mindanao will soon flourish as palm oil hub of the country.

MinDA recorded that 20 percent or 177,000 out 900,000 hectares of land identified apt for oil palm plantation is already under negotiation for palm oil development. MinDA Chairperson Luwalhati Antonino, one of those private sectors who venture on palm oil business is Univanich Carmen Palm Oil Corporation which had a groundbreaking ceremony for its 600 million palm oil crushing mill in Carmen, Cotabato.
