Briefly Power shortage looms

FILIPINO consumers, especially those in the Luzon grid, are being warned of ‘tight power supply’ within the stretch of the summer months that may then result not just spikes in electric bills but also of threatening brownouts or power service interruptions.

According to system operator National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), there will be “thin power supply this summer due to higher demand in 2023.”

This year is considered as an ‘exhaustive rebound period’ from the affliction of the coronavirus pandemic, which for years had put the economy into a screeching halt or at a very gradual pace of ascend – hence, electricity demand uptick is largely anticipated.

P92-M smuggled cigarettes seized in Zamboanga, Sulu

ZAMBOANGA City – Authorities

seized some P92.2 million worth of smuggled cigarettes in separate anti-smuggling operations in Zamboanga Peninsula and Sulu, officials said Tuesday.

The latest apprehensions were made by the Philippine Coast Guard and Philippine National Police in separate anti-smuggling operations in Zamboanga del Norte.

Commodore Marco Antonio

Gines, commander of the Coast Guard District Southwestern Mindanao, said some P2.1 million worth of smuggled cigarettes were seized Monday at the Galas feeder port in Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte.

Gines said the assorted smuggled cigarettes, hidden in a delivery van using 32 bags of

rice bran, were confiscated by the boarding team of the Dipolog City coast guard substation team. The contraband was turned over to the Bureau of Customs (BOC) for proper disposition.

Shortly before noon of the same day, Brig. Gen. Neil Alinsañgan, the Police Regional Office-9 (Zamboanga Peninsula) director, said a van loaded with P120,980 worth of assorted smuggled cigarettes was intercepted at a police checkpoint in Barangay Ilaya, Dapitan City, Zamboanga del Norte.

Alinsañgan said the van driver, Danilo Josol was arrested after he failed to show documents of his merchandise.

Over the weekend, Rear Adm. Donn Anthony Miraflor, commander of the Naval Forces

Western Mindanao (NFWM), said NFWM operatives also intercepted a wooden-hulled vessel loaded with contrabands

1,600 yards northeast of BJ wharf in Indanan, Sulu, on Feb. 18.

Miraflor said ML Haiban was found to be loaded with 4,500 master cases and 225,000 reams of assorted smuggled cigarettes worth P92 million when inspected. ML Habain which was manned by an 11-man crew and skippered by Eddie Taugiag, came from Indonesia when intercepted.

Miraflor said the vessel including its cargo and crew, was escorted on Sunday to Mauboh Pier in Patikul and turned over to the custody of the BOC-Sulu for appropriate disposition. (PNA)

Abducted school driver rescued in Marawi City

CAMP SK PENDATUN, Maguindanao Norte – Police personnel in Marawi City and Lanao del Sur rescued a kidnapping victim following a hot pursuit operation Wednesday afternoon.

In a report Thursday, Col. Robert Daculan, Lanao del Sur police provincial director, identified the victim as Jamel Lantod Hadji Jabbar, driver at the Siena School Foundation in Marawi City.

Daculan said Jabbar was forcibly taken by gunmen, including the van (FAB-1185) he was driving in Barangay Beyabadamag, Marawi City, and brought him to the direction of Marantao, Lanao del Sur.

After receiving the information, personnel from the Marawi City police station and the provincial

police mobile force company conducted the pursuit operation and recovered the victim in Barangay Cadayawan, also in Marawi City.

The Marawi police said the motive of the abduction was “rido” (clan feud), and that Jabbar was abducted by relatives identified only as Mohamad and Ansary.

No charges have been filed as both sides agreed to settle the matter peacefully, the police said. (PNA)

Clean Classroom, Happy Learning

In the classroom, teachers have two duties: instructing and supervising the students. These two important tasks, though, are influenced by a wide range of circumstances. The two main stakeholders in the school's operations are most concerned about how tidy the classrooms are. A tidy classroom has positive impacts on instructors, students, parents, and anybody else who enters the building.

The fact that a clean classroom increases the kids' learning opportunities is its most significant advantage. Studies have shown that unclean classrooms have a negative effect on students' learning and, thus, on the classroom's overall effectiveness. Students who attend schools where hygiene is strictly enforced receive better scores and

graduate at higher rates.

In order to make kids feel as comfortable as possible, teachers should keep in mind that the classroom serves as a child's second home. The goal of educators should be to foster an atmosphere that encourages participation and learning.

In addition to being a place for education, schools allow children to socialize and build skills that will benefit them in the future. The significance of keeping the school clean cannot be understated when it comes to ensuring that it is a safe environment. Read on to learn more and find out some useful recommendations for maintaining school cleanliness if you're interested in finding out how you can make sure your school is spotless.

European firms tap PH remittance market

CYPRUS-based software developer Armenotech and money transfer firm Tempo France have partnered with the country's Cebuana Lhuillier to take advantage of the Philippine remittance market.

In a statement shared to the media Friday, Armenotech and Tempo France said their partnership with Cebuana will allow overseas Filipinos to send money to the Philippines faster and at lower cost.

Sending money from Europe to the Philippines can be faster by sending the remittance at Tempo France locations or through its mobile application that can be claimed in over 10,000 Cebuana outlets across the country.

“It is the start of a very important project. We give people yet another degree of convenience, which is very important for Philippine nationals who live and work

overseas, to be able to send money to their families,” said Tempo France chief executive officer Alla Zhedik.

Zhedik said the Philippines is a lucrative market for remittance business with annual growth of 10 percent.

In 2022, Philippine remittances hit a record high of $36.1 billion.

Transactions coursed via InstaPay, PESONet climb as of end-January

THE VALUE and volume of electronic fund transfers that went through PESONet and InstaPay rose as of end-January from a year earlier, according to data from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP).

The combined value of transactions done via the BSP’s automated clearing houses InstaPay and PESONet climbed by 36% to P955 billion as of January from the P702 billion in the same period in 2022.

In terms of volume, cumulative transactions

coursed through InstaPay and PESONet grew by 26% to 58 million as of end-January from 46 million in the comparable year-ago period.

“This is good news. This may mean that more and more people are using these BSP services,” Union Bank of the Philippines, Inc. Chief Economist Ruben Carlo O. Asuncion said in a Viber message.

“With the increase in usage, it may also mean the increase of people within the current

system which is in line with the goal including more and more people in the financial system,” he added.

Broken down, the value of PESONet transactions rose by 35.3% to P607.86 billion as of last month’s end from P449.35 billion at end-January 2022.

The volume of transactions coursed through the payment gateway stood at 7.37 million, 14.1% higher from the 6.46 million seen in the same period last year.

A Human-Being is Consciousness

Let Us Connect with the Unseen Supreme Being, the Formless

WE ARE all embodied spirits, more spirit than body having been created in the image and likeness of God. This is a truism that must be the basis of our existence so that the development of the spirit must be the priority rather than be enslaved to the whims and caprices of the body. We must now realize the truism that we are more than form, we are consciousness that emanated from the Supreme Being, the Formless who is eternal. All life forms are transient but consciousness is eternal. Feel that Life Force deep within which can be likened to a priceless jewel and know who truly you are.

life forms has tremendously decreased as these life forms which have evolved on earth for billions of years are now extinct. As the earth warms and the oceans rise, we are now confronted on how to feed, clothe and house the exponentially growing earthlings that will reach the 9.3 billion mark in 2050.

of love. All material wealth will have no bearing in the spiritual world as signified in the biblical lines, “what will profit a man if he gains the whole world but suffer the loss of his soul.”

It is sad to note that the present development paradigm indulges so much on unbridled materialism and consumerism which does not only run counter to the essence of our very own spirituality but can be likened to the workings of an auto-immune disease syndrome (Aids), where no less than the body’s defense mechanisms are attacking vital organs. We decimate our forests, pollute our rivers and bays; we produce food yet contaminate our water table following costly agricultural technologies tied up to the heavy use of toxic chemicals; modern living adopting lifestyle that what makes of a throw-away-society – all done in the name of development.

If our way of making a living is killing Mother Earth because it is just all about how to respond to bodily needs, that kind of mindset has totally disregarded man’s spirituality. In fact, the growth-at-allcost development strategy is rooted on the brutal, jungle-like philosophy of the “survival of the fittest”, “fittest” being the most aggressive, the strongest –all but physical qualities.

This world is not just all physical. As embodied spirits, we must develop our spiritual qualities as these are what are the essentials when we will leap to the Great Beyond. In the world inside the womb of a mother, the fetus must develop the physical qualities as it is a sort of hell living on earth without senses or arms or feet.

That kind of development that is just centered on materiality and consumerism must now be debunked. There is now the increasing call to replace it with one that is sustainable, holistic and community-based that puts the people at the center and at the mainstream of development processes. Human development must take precedence over materiality. The first principle of sustainable development is the full development of human potentials. The most pitiful sight on earth is to see a human being dying without developing his/her human potentials whose heart has not throbbed with that celestial fire called love.

are satisfied, no development can take place, only maldevelopment.

Mahatma Gandhi had put it more succinctly when he said, “If man has to be saved from doom, development must be in harmony with nature and not at its own expense.”

Saved in the Storm

THINK A MINUTE

This prepared John for his service in the British Navy. Yet sadly, while John learned his skills of sailing from his father, he did not learn self-control and discipline. John was soon arrested, publicly whipped and demoted to just a common sailor for deserting his duty on ship.

Later, while still a teenager, John sailed on a ship bound for Africa. By now young John was wilder than ever. He did not choose his friends wisely and continued to sink deeper into immoral living.

In Africa John ended up in the service of a slave dealer. The slave trade attracted John as a profitable business and way to get rich; but before he knew it John was put to work on the dealer’s plantation laboring with the other slaves.

Finally at age 21 John escaped on a ship called the Greyhound, where he continued his uncontrolled living. He again chose the wrong friends who made fun of the God-worshipping sailors on board, including the captain.

One night John’s ship, the Greyhound, was caught in a violent storm. The boat’s side caved in and it began to sink as the water

came flooding in. One of the sailors yelled, “We’re all going to die!” At that moment, for the first time in John’s life, he prayed and cried out to God: “Lord have mercy on us!”

Amazingly, the ship did not sink! John never forgot it. In fact, God’s mercy that night in the storm not only saved John, but so completely changed him for the rest of his life that he wrote a song about it which is sung by millions around the world today:

“Amazing grace! How sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I’m found—was blind, but now I see!”

John Newton’s song and story can become yours too, because God is offering His full and free grace to you today. Won’t you ask Jesus to forgive you for your wrong heart and sinful living? If you give Him complete charge of your heart and life, He can start changing you into the man or woman He created you to be. Just

That kind of development can only be described as ruthless and futureless which has made the impossible now possible, which is the end of life on earth. Biodiversity embracing the billions of

The nature of work done can be categorized in three classes. They are positive work, negative work and zero work. The nature of work depends on the angle between force and displacement. Positive workif the applied force displaces the object in its direction, then the work done is known as positive work.

We are all workers whether we work in a plush carpeted office as executives and managers, in a hot and noisy assembly-plant as factory-hands or as housewives at home.

Why do we work? Why do we slug five or six days a week (or even more?) for eight or more hours at a stretch? The church has had quite a lot to say about work and especially, the rights of the workers. And when you get through the church jargon, you'll find statements on minimum wages for workers, needs for leisure and social benefits.

But the next life will not anymore be physical but spiritual, thus, we must develop what are the essentials in the spiritual world such as love, service, intellectual prowess, patience, kindness, honesty, integrity and all the God-like qualities that qualify us to end up in the loving embrace of God. How can you end up in God’s loving embrace if all you have developed on earth is the physical devoid

It is the Book of Genesis which tells us that work is God's gift to human beings. God gave us the will, power and intelligence to "fill the earth and subdue it" and not just talk about seeing the wild beasts, the fruits and grains... .

We are given the enormous task of shaping the earth, whether as machinist in a textile factory, or as clerk in court. The important message is: Work is for man (and woman) and not man (and woman) for work! Through work, man develops himself, his personality and his sense of self-worth. It is also through work that man produces goods and services contributing and participating in the development and society.

In the encyclical Laborem Exercens (on human work), Pope John Paul II made it clear that there should be just remuneration for the work of an adult who is

We in the cooperative movement adhere to the United Nations’ definition as the full development of human potentials, the expansion of choices and opportunities. For development to be so, it must pass a three-way test. First, is it ecologically sustainable, meaning, it does not harm the environment but instead nurtures it. Second, does it benefit the people in whose name and for whose cause it is there for? And third, does it have people’s participation? We believe that unless people participate in development processes, all the outpourings of development programs will just be palliatives. All told, unless all these three criteria

As embodied spirits, let us all be one with God’s creation in the spirit of love and service exemplifying “paglilingkod” at “pagmamahal”! Knowing who truly we are as consciousness will connect us to the Unseen Supreme Being who is Stillness and Vast Spaciousness. Such cannot be had it we be enslaved to compulsive thinking as controlled by the Ego. We must now realize that human beings are work in progress through evolution. It is so painful to note that it is the EGO that is in control that has caused collective insanity. Thus, it has become imperative to unfetter ourselves from form or object consciousness. Spiritual awakening/enlightenment is the urgent call of the times to be free from the fallacies of life and religions. Indeed, “If on earth there is a paradise of bliss, it is this, it is this, it is this.” Such is CONSCIOUNESS! Think a minute… In England during the 1700’s, it was fairly common for boys to spend several months in boarding school before heading out to sea. And so it was for John. He was 11-years-old when his father, a master of a trade ship in the Mediterranean, took John on the journey with him.

responsible for a family and this means enough money for the breadwinner to feed, clothe and maintain his partner and children, with provisions "for security for his future".

We know the church cares. But the church is not our employer. In daily life, there are our bosses and companies which dictate our wages, our increments and our social benefits. What happens if we have bosses who feel they own us; bosses who demand overtime from us and who are more worried about cutting company costs than about our wages?

Pope John Paul II saw these problems a long time ago as conflicts between labour and capital and the strongly opposed exploitation of the workers by entrepreneurs who want to maximize profits by giving low wages. The late Pope called the Trade Union an indispensable element

of social life especially in modern industrialized societies "with the task of being a mouthpiece for the struggles for social justice for the just rights of working people".

If you think this is the beginning to sound radical, hang on, there's more. Workers, he said, should be allowed to strike without being subjected to personal penal sanctions for taking part in a strike. Strikes, of course, are the extreme means, to be taken only after other means if reconciliation fails!

DTI: 26% of PH exports depend on EU GSP+

THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has underscored the importance of the European Union (EU) Generalized Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+) to the Philippines in a meeting with the visiting representatives of the EU Parliament.

DTI Secretary Alfredo Pascual met with representatives of the EU Parliament Subcommittee on Human Rights in Makati City on Feb. 22, wherein the trade chief gave updates on the country’s commitment to the 27 international conventions and how the GSP+ has benefited the Philippines and EU economic relations.

The EU Parliament representatives who met with Pascual were Isabel Wiseler-Lima of the Group of the European People’s Party, Karsten Lucke of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats, Hannah Neumann of The Greens and the European Free Alliance, Ryszard Czarnecki of the European Conservatives and Reformists Group, and Miguel Urban Crespo of The Left.

The representatives of the EU Parliament Subcommittee on Human Rights are visiting Manila to meet with Pascual and Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla from Feb.

22 to 24.

In a Viber message to trade reporters Thursday, Pascual told the visiting EU Parliament representatives that 26 percent of the county’s exports are benefiting from the EU-GSP+.

“This preferential scheme benefitted not just our local industries but even foreign investors doing business in the country,” he said.

The Philippine government bats for the renewal of the EU-GSP+, which is set to expire by the end of this year.

Under this trade preference program, 6,270 goods from the Philippines that enter the EU market have zero tariffs.

REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES

Pascual also conveyed to the EU Parliament representatives the country’s interest to resume the Philippines-EU free trade agreement (FTA) talks, which has been on hiatus for almost six years.

“We urge them to support the resumption of the PHEU FTA negotiation,” he added. (PNA)

P344-B investment leads in the pipeline: BOI

TRADE Secretary Alfredo

Pascual said Saturday the Board of Investments (BOI) has investment leads of P344 billion, which would allow the agency to hit its target before the year ends.

“So far, the agency has potential investment leads of around P344 billion that will still be processed, and more likely than never, we may have 80 to 90 percent of the target even before the middle of the year,” Pascual, who also chairs the BOI, said in a statement.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is targeting to return to the PHP1 trillion level in investment approvals in 2023.

From January to Feb. 9 alone, the BOI approved P414.3 billion worth of projects, which is 142.9 percent higher than the P170.5 billion investment approvals in the same period last year.

Pascual added that some of these investment leads are offshoots of the foreign trips of President Ferdinand R.

Marcos Jr.

“The increase in investments proves that the government’s promotional visit abroad, led by no less than the President himself, are working as a growing number of investors from around the globe – from Southeast Asia, the US, Belgium, China, and most recently Japan – have shown strong interest in putting in more investments into the country,” he said.

The trade chief noted that approved investments in less than two months of 2023 surged to P163 billion, from P249 million in the same period in 2022.

“BOI-approved foreign capital for barely the first months of 2023 has already reached 56 percent of the total figure for all IPAs (investment promotion agencies) last year. So, this year looks very promising with heightened prospects and through our collective efforts, we are on course to surpass the 2022 figure way ahead of time,” Pascual said. (PNA)

DHL Express upgrades aircraft in Philippines

WITH the upbeat business activities as the Philippines reopens the economy from the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) restrictions, DHL Express has upgraded its dedicated aircraft in the country that can load larger capacity and meet the growing logistics demand.

DHL Express launched in Pasay City on Thursday its latest A330-300 aircraft, an upgrade from the A300.

DHL Express Philippines head of commercial Eric Queppet said in a media event that e-commerce continues to drive growth of its Philippine business.

“E-commerce continues to be our source of growth. What we are seeing is this is a continuous sector that is actually spurring growth to our business, including the deliveries because these are individuals that are ordering online, and direct delivery to their homes and offices.

And we continue to expect growth from this sector even after the pandemic, and the economy is opening up,” Queppet said.

He said the tech industry, automotive and retail, as well as individual parcels sent by and for overseas Filipinos, supported the company’s growth over the years.

Queppet said the company sees this trend to continue with the rosy economic outlook for the Philippines.

“We’re seeing the GDP (gross domestic product) growth of the Philippines will be very positive as forecasted by different agencies, including IMF (International Monetary Fund) and World Bank. And we’re banking on that bullish forecast to ride on those growth of the Philippines, particularly coming from (the) SME (small and medium enterprise) market and also our tech sector and automotive sector,” he added.

DHL Express Philippines country manager Nigel Lockett said the company continues to invest and improve its operations in the country.

“Our new and larger aircraft is a firm commitment to serving our customers and ensur(ing) that we are prepared to support their growth at a global scale and respond to the needs and demands of the market,” Lockett said.

Upgrading from A300 to A330-300, DHL Express’ new aircraft increased its capacity from 42 tons to 55 tons.

The study showed that house dust and residents living near monocrop pineapple plantations in Baguio District have tested positive for traces of highly toxic pesticides.

“We have worked tirelessly to maintain the trust of our customers and the public, and it is deeply troubling to us that false information has been circulated that undermines our credibility and hard-earned reputation,” Languido said.

MindaNews earlier tried but failed to get the side of Sumifru.

Lemuel Lloyd Manalo, IDIS program coordinator, told MindaNews the samples were taken from a community closely situated to the pineapple plantations, including “those owned by growers supplying bananas to Sumifru.”

Manalo admitted that it is difficult to trace the source of the contaminants, unless the large growers would make their “formulations” available to the public.

Earlier, he noted the scope of their study was limited only to the immediate environs of the pineapple plantation operated by the Davao Agricultural Ventures Corporation (DAVCO) and other nearby pineapple farms.

He said that there is a big possibility that the source of contaminants came from large pineapple plantations, since the highest concentration of the pesticides were detected from samples within the “Group 1,” composed of residents living within the 30-meter radius from those monocrop plantations.

He said they also took samples from residents living 500 meters from the boundaries of the plantations.

Manalo said that parathion, a banned pesticide in the Philippines, was not detected in the agricultural inputs of small-scale farmers.

However, traces of parathion were detected in both dust and urine samples of residents living near large pineapple plantations, according to the study.

Based on the study, at least 22 pesticides banned or not approved for use in the European Union were found in the house dust and urine samples.

A press release issued by IDIS on February 22 said pyrethroid (3PBA), parathion and chlorpyrifos were the top three pesticides detected from household dust and urine samples of residents near pineapple plantations at Brgy. Tawan-Tawan, Davao City.

“Parathion is a pesticide banned in the Philippines due to its high toxicity. This has long been banned by the Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority since 1993,” it said.

Among all regions in the country, the Zamboanga Peninsula posted the highest employment rate at 98% while the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao posted the highest increase from 94.4% in July to 97.5% in October 2022.

The unemployment rate in Davao Region worsened from 2.9% in July 2022 to 3.5% in October 2022, it said.

The agency said 2.31 million workers were accounted for in the region during this period, with a Labor Force Participation Rate of 62.1%.

In terms of underemployment, the PSA-Davao reported that at least 7.8% of the total workers in the region were reported to be underemployed in October 2022.

“Underemployed persons or employed persons who: expressed their desire to have additional hours of work in their present job or to have additional job, or to have a new job with longer hours of work,” it said.

Uy said Converge's goal is to make the vital interconnection between the submarine network with the domestic terrestrial network.

“(Our) lives are now connected to the digital world. We need to provide enough capacity and redundancy in the future needs of individual Filipino,” he said. Submarine cables and their connections to terrestrial networks enable real-time access to business and consumer applications, social media, streaming video, websites, and many other bandwidth-intensive services.

Meanwhile, former President Rodrigo Duterte said he is optimistic that the project will provide better connectivity that will enhance the experience of the people and businesses.

“I am truly excited to see this project upon its completion and may this endeavor gives the necessary technological advances that will connect our people and further close the digital divide,” he said in a speech during the activity. (PNA)

to evaluate and implement big-ticket projects under a public-private partnership scheme and put in place a “greatest value and reduction of risk” management system.

Lim added that the government did not set a deadline for Chelsea to comply with the new requirements.

The proposed project, with an estimated cost of around P48.97 billion, is intended to expand and upgrade the facilities in the DIA through a PPP scheme.

“It’s the call of the proponent when to submit the revised guidelines. Suffice it to say that it should be compliant with the revised implementing rules and regulations,” she said.

The Chelsea Logistics Holdings Corporation submitted an unsolicited proposal for the multi-billion Davao International Airport Development Project on May 28, 2018 and was granted by the Department of Transportation (DOTr) with “original proponent status” for the operation, maintenance, and expansion of the airport.

However, Lim said the original proponent status was already withdrawn by the DOTR, which would allow other private proponents to make similar proposals for the modernization of the Davao International Airport.

Lim added that the Regional Development Council (RDC)Davao has proposed to the DOTr to conduct a feasibility study for the construction of an additional airport in the region.

She said alternative sites that are being considered for a new international airport are Tagum City, Panabo City, Santa Maria Municipality in Davao Occidental, Davao Del Sur, and Barangay Mandug, this city.

The lender’s improved net profit was also driven by the 18% increase in its gross margin that came despite a P5.9-billion credit loss, DBP Officerin-Charge for Operations First VicePresident Christine G. Mota said.

“For 2022, DBP substantially exceeded its net income target of P3.85-billion by 46%, which attests to the bank’s lofty position as one of the most financially stable government financial institutions in the country,” Ms. Mota said.

Before provisions, the bank’s income stood at P12.5 billion, a 44.4% increase from P8.66 billion in 2021, she added. DBP’s total assets stood at P1.045

Meanwhile, the value of transactions done through InstaPay grew by 37.3% year on year to P347.96 billion at end-January from P253.35 billion in the comparable year-ago period.

The volume of InstaPay transactions also went up by 27.7% to 51.55 million from 40.37 million in 2022.

PESONet and InstaPay are automated clearing houses launched in December 2015 under the central bank’s National Retail Payment System.

PESONet caters to high-value transactions and may be considered as an electronic alternative to paperbased checks.

On the other hand, InstaPay is a real-time, low-value electronic fund transfer facility for transactions up to P50,000 and is most useful for remittances and e-commerce.

The BSP wants 50% of total retail transactions done digitally and to bring at least 70% of Filipino adults into the financial system by this year under its Digital Payments Transformation Roadmap.

The share of digital payments in the total volume of retail transactions in the country rose to 30.3% in 2021 from 20.1% in 2020 as consumers and businesses used more online channels amid mobility restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic.

was suggested by others.” And so, I said, “OK, I am honored by the invitation. I will try to share my own personal recollections, but certainly not the “history” of the Plazans. I settled down at a table with familiar friends: Henry Yu, Bong Cabe, Roque Gaerlan, Harold Willkom, Caloy Gorospe, Filamer Artajo, and Mario Reyes. When the program started, I was called by the Emcee to sit at the head table with Bill Casiño, Cris Cabillon, Rene Garcia, Filamer Artajo and Congressman Rufus Rodriguez. Filamer Artajo was first to share his own recollections of the “History of the “Plazans”. Immediately after him , I was called to share my own recollections.

I. The “Plazans”: My Personal Reminiscenses:

There is a bisayâ song, “Ang Atong Kagahapon” … Ang atong kagahapon, tugob sa handumanan, Kalipay atong batî-on, punô ning atong dughan.

Ang atong kabatan-on, walay kagul-anan, katawa, hudjaka, molingaw kanunay, ning kinabuhî ta.

Atong kabatan-on, atong kagahapon, lumalabay lamang. Sama sa panganud galupad-lupad sa kahanginan.

Maoy magpabilin mga handumanan ning atong dughan.

I like the song’s nice lilting, cha-cha beat, but more so, I love the meaningful words which very much relate to my reminiscenses of the Plazans. Indeed, as the song goes -- those “yesteryears, our youthful years, we will deeply cherish, and in our hearts they will remain”.

My years with the Plazans started at about the 1950s, during my highschool years at the Ateneo de Cagayan, and continued on to my college years and beyond. I was a basketball player and many Plazans were my co-players. Also, my family life in Kagay-an began in the early 50s, when my father was the manager of Philippine Air Lines, PAL (1950-1962). PAL office was located at the ground floor of the Lara building (corner Pabayo and N. Divisoria Streets. Our family lived on the upper floors of the PAL office. Plaza Divisoria, in a sense, was my playground.

I have read some books and articles about the history of Cagayan de Oro City, aspects of it, such as -the early beginnings of the town and community, the religious aspects, and the evolution and expansion to what it has become today (written by famous authors). A booklet was printed out, upon the initiative of Roy Gaane and others, some years ago (a copy of which is in my home library). The booklet contains a number of short write-ups by Kagay-anons themselves, recalling their growing-up years in Kagay-an, their school days, their social life, etc. They are enjoyable, informative, and interesting readings. But, I am sorry to say -- in all the writings, there is no mention whatsoever of the Plazans. Really, sorry, because I cannot imagine Kagay-an without the Plazans.

Congressman Rufus Rodriguez has initiated a laudable project he calls “historical trails”. This project will establish “trails” of heritage sites, places, and institutions worthy to see as one visits Cagayan de Oro, the province of Misamis Oriental, and neighboring provinces of Camiguin and Bukidnon. Among the prominent places along the “trails” will certainly include Cagayan de Oro’s San Agustin Cathedral and the adjacent Gaston Park, the City Hall, and nearby the first (oldest) bridge, the Capitol building and its park, Lourdes College, etc.

Along the “trails”, two places will be outstanding, namely, “Plaza Divisoria” and “Xavier UniversityAteneo de Cagayan”, two priceless heritage treasures of the “City of Golden Friendship”. Plaza Divisioria has always been associated with the North and South Divisoria Streets along which were located a variety of shops, businesses, and offices (Shanghai and Ah Fat bakeries, the King’s Store, Dadlani Bazaar, the Casino, Prince and Princess theaters, Bina Tan grocery, etc.), the Kiosko, the wet market, and the monuments of Rizal, Bonifacio, and later Magsaysay. If these physical features and attributes of Plaza Divisoria have given the City its physical beauty, its uniqueness, and physical ambience, the people have

Here again, I remember the Beatles’ song, “Places to Remember”

There are places I remember, all my life, ‘though some have changed.

Some forever, not for better, some are gone, and some remain.

All those places have their moments, with lovers and friends I still can recall.

Some are dead, and some are living, in my life I’ve loved them all.

… But, all these memories lose their meaning, when I think of love as something new.

But I never really lose affection for people and things that went before.

I often stop and think about them, in my life, I’ve loved them all.

The Ateneo de Cagayan (renamed Xavier University in 1959), was “The School” in Kagay-an. The Plazans, most of them, if not all, were “Ateneans”. Two places at the Ateneo were frequented by many Plazans -- the “backcourts” and the “gym”, obviously because a number of the Plazans loved and/or played basketball. Usually, after the games, the Plazans would “imtabay” (congregate, and loiter around) in their favorite “istambayan”, hang-out sites) at Plaza Divisoria.

The Plazans were actually composed of two groups, namely: 1) the “ganits” (many were professionals, some doctors, engineers, politikos, businessmen, lawyers, etc.), who frequented Plaza Divisoria to chat, discuss, relax, loiter around, etc.), and

2) the “bagets”, the “young ones” in those days (now the “young once”).

II. Some Favorite Activities of the “Baget-Plazans”, and Some Personalities:

The Plazans were, first of all, obviously noted for being “istambay” -- “killing time”, chatting, watching people passing by, “oogling” and whistling at “chicks”, intimidating some “boarders” of the Ateneo when they went out of the school campus. The other favorite activities included:

1) The favorite sport was basketball. In school, some Plazans were outstanding players who were in the school varsity teams. Some of them also played with commercial teams during the “Summer Basketball League”. They were my team-mates. I could recall some names: Mercado brothers, Dolores brothers, Orqueza brothers, Aguirre brothers, Roa brothers, Gorospe brothers, Sito Neri, Tario Ebdalin, Ben Chaves, Pondol Dadole, Gaylord Gayloa, Andoy Kwong, Henry “Watusi” Yu, Ben Tagam, Vilmo de la Cruz., Leo Daba. Most of them were members of the often champion team, the “Shanghai Bakery”.

2) The Plazans frequently enjoyed swimming and picnics at then pristine waters of Kagay-an river, and also at the nearby beaches in Bon-Bon, Opol, Chali, Lapasan, Gusa, Baloy, etc.

3) Joy-riding at their favorite Carmen Hill on the way to Manresa Farm. This hilly, winding route is now “Fr. William F. Masterson SJ Avenue” (named after the visionary founder of the Xavier U College of Agriculture). It was during one of the “joy-rides” that an unfortunate accident occurred, seriously injuring some Plazans (among them Danzig Zambaan with a broken limb).

4) “Gang” activities somewhat divided the Plazans in “barrio-barrio” situations. Plazans formed “gangs”, the ones I recall were the “Winchesters”, “Stalag 17”, “Bell Boys”, among others. There were occasions that some groups antagonized each other, and they occasionally engaged in “puñete” (fist fighting). A few Plazans were good boxers (I recall Miro Castro, MikMik Roa, and Temy Dizon).

5) Singing was also a favorite activity during “istambay” time. It was at that time that the ukelele was popularized. Among the favorite songs of the Plazans were those by internationally known singers, such as, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Neil Sedaka, the Four Aces, the Platters, etc. . Kagay-an had some good singers, like the Ortega brothers, Boy (with a Mario Lanza voice) , and Raul, both of whom somehow associated themselves with the Plazans. Some Plazans were members of the “Ateneo Glee Club”. I suppose many Plazans also liked dancing (bogey, cha-cha, rock ‘n roll, twist, and the slow “sweet” dance).

6) Smoking and drinking were favorite “addictions”, if I may say. Fortunately, drug addiction was nonexistent. The favorite brands were the “blue seal” cigarettes -- Philip Morris, Winston, and Marlboro. For drinking, Plazans imbibed San Miguel beer, Tanduay Rum, Mallorca, and tubâ.

6) Movie-going was a favorite past-time. At Plaza Divisoria were two theaters, “Prince” and “Princess”, which burned down during a big fire in the City sometime in the late 50s. Among the popular actors were

James Dean. I recall Patuting Neri being labelled as the “James Dean” of Kagay-an because he was fond of imitating the styles of the famous actor.

7) Personalities who are worth mentioning in my personal recollections are: a) There were the “good ones”, the best, most “buotan” among them was Fr. Miciano SJ, who made “his rounds at night” and frequently hang-out with the Plazans; b) There were “naughty ones” (“mga badlongon”), and among the “naughtiest” was Adong Puertas; c) Among the “popular ones”, the most well-known was Maning Gabar. So much for those yesteryears, our youthful years, and the memories we will always cherish in our hearts. I hope someone will write about the vintage Plazans, who, among other Kagay-anon, have made Plaza Divisoria, truly alive -- priceless, unique, beautiful, and really a pride of the “City of Golden Friendship”. III. Changes and Development: Since the 1950s to the present, significant changes and development have occurred in the “City of Golden Friendship”. As the Beatles’ song goes, some changes are “forever, not for better, some are gone, and some remain”. Let me mention a few.

1. The City is fast transforming into a metropolis. In all dimensions, in all aspects, in all directions, the City has tremendously grown. With this, as they say, “there is a price for growth”. Physically, along with the increasing subdivisions, housing projects, public and private residential areas, and thriving businesses, are traffic congestions, air and noise pollution, and flooding at several places, which many believe will continue to get worse in the years ahead.

2. Life has changed. Unlike the Kagay-an of old, today, many people in Cagayan de Oro, the residents, even neighborhoods, young and old, act like “strangers” to one another. Despite this “negative” development, the culture of friendliness and peacefulness is prevailing.

3. Many Plazans have emigrated to other places, many to distant foreign lands, and there they have raised their families. Those who have remained in Cagayan de Oro have experienced many changes as well. All have raised their families adapting to the changes. Obviously, practically all have become grandparents, even great-grandparents.

4. Some Plazans have been blessed with fortunes, while others have suffered misfortunes. Nevertheless, rich or poor, in whatever state of wealth or health, their being Plazans have been etched in their lives and dignity as persons.

5. Even to date, many “die-hard” Plazans continue to meet. They have a new hangout place -- at SM Mall, Dunkin’ Donuts and other sites.

6. The Ateneo de Cagayan of yesteryears, to which so many Plazans have been attached as “Ateneans”, has changed so much with so many new buildings and structures. The old gym is gone. The “backcourts” is now the “covered courts”. The Grade and High Schools have been moved over to Uptown Cagayan de Oro. I would like to think of the City of Cagayan de Oro as like a vigorously growing “tree”, growing in a peaceful, friendly, clean, ecologically green and sound environment. Among its prominent branches and fruits would include, among others, the Plaza Divisoria, Xavier University (Ateneo de Cagayan), and the Kagay-anon, among them the Plazans, ( “ganits” and “bagets”).

PLAZANS of Cagayan de Oro

On February 19, 2023, the Plazans convened for a gettogether dinner at VIP Hotel, Cagayan de Oro. This was organized by the current set of officers (led by its President Bill Casiño, and others, Rene Garcia, Nitoy Malferrari, Cris Cabillon, etc.). When I entered the VIP function room (about 6:15 p.m.), I was pleasantly surprised to see quite a huge crowd of about 150-200 people already settled down in various round tables. I said to myself, “Wow! Amazing! Wonderful!”

Immediately, I could recognize familiar faces and friends, but so many were not so familiar, others looked strangers to me, because, either their faces (as I knew them) had changed over the passing years, and/ or obviously because the Plazans consisted of different generations.

From mere looks as I glanced around, it was difficult to calculate the range of ages, but I reckoned it was between from the youngest (about the early 50s) to the oldest, guess what and who? He was Tony Roa whom I approached and I asked about his age. He readily replied, “90”. That prompted another Wow! I continued to look around, and in those moments, so many other “Plazans” entered my mind, quite a number of them had passed away (RIP. God bless them. Our prayers for them).

It was Henry Yu (aka Henry Lee, Henry Visbal) at first who phoned me about this dinner event. Then, I received a call from Bill Casiño inviting and asking me if I could come and give a talk about the “History of the Plazans”. This was another surprise to me, and I asked him, “Why me? There are others who would be more appropriate and capable for this.” He replied. “Your name
