CIVIL society groups and their partners in government convened last Wednesday in Cagayan de Oro to formulate a strategy for engagement with the incoming city administration to institutionalize the civil society - local government partnership on good natural resource governance as its way of celebrating World Environment Day. “As a gesture of affirmative action, civil society in collaboration with partners from government agencies must assist the upcoming administration in Cagayan de Oro City frame an environmental agenda and come up with an engagement strategy anchored on the principles of sustainable development, specifically on climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction, and the rehabilitation of its ecological support system particularly the integrity and biodiversity of the watersheds,” said Raoul T. CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Ecological leaders from government and civil society intoned the same tune in the observance of World Environment Day last Wednesday in reminding residents of the global and local effects of environmental degradation, aligning it to the tragic calamity that hit this city on December 16 and 17, 2011, when devastations spawned by typhoon Sendong (International code name Washi) killed some 3,000 people, 1,000 missing and rendered homeless some 11,000 others.
Villar bats to protect OFWs as PH observes Migrant Workers’ Day SENATOR-elect Cynthia Villar renewed her call to the Philippine government to always protect and promote the welfare of over 10 million Filipino migrant workers as the nation commemorates Migrant Workers’ Day. “It is fitting to celebrate the day of our Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) to remember and acknowledge their significant contributions to nation-building,” said Villar. She said OFWs are worthy of being called our ‘modern-day heroes’ because of their immense assistance in saving our economy
through their remittances. “We draw a lifeline from their remittances being sent to the country. The dollar remittances provide a big boost to our economy,” said Villar. “We should address all the concerns of our OFWs, starting from their recruitment until the time they are already working in a foreign country,” she added.
