Jr. on Friday believed it is “baseless” for Justice Secre tary Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla to step down from his post following the arrest of his son in an anti-drug operation.

In a chance interview in Pasay City, Marcos vouched for Remulla’s competence and integrity, saying the Justice chief is fit for the job despite the fact that his son, Juanito Jose Diaz Remulla III, was arrested Tuesday morning for possession of illegal drugs.

“I think the calls for him to resign have no basis. You call for somebody to resign if he’s not doing his job or that they have misbehaved in that job. He has not done [anything wrong]. He has done quite the contrary,” he said when asked to react to calls for Remulla’s resigna tion.

Marcos added that Re mulla had already made a “very proper” stance not to intervene in his son’s case.

involvement in the case of his son. And I think that being the Secretary of the Department of Justice he’s very aware that he must allow the processes of the judiciary to work properly and that no one in the ex ecutive should interfere,” Marcos said.

In a statement Friday, the Philippine Drug En forcement Agency (PDEA) said criminal charges have been filed against Juanito Jose before the Las Piñas City Prosecutor’s Office on Thursday.

He is now facing charges for violation of Section 4 (importation of dangerous drugs), Article II of RA 9165 otherwise known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

Illegal quarrying in Bulacan results to arrest of 9 persons

CITY OF MALOLOS, Bu lacan – Nine persons were arrested for illegal quarry ing of expensive volcanic rock ideal for landscap ing in Marilao town, this province, on Wednesday.

In his report on Thurs day, Colonel Relly B. Arne do, officer-in-charge of the Bulacan Police Provincial Office, said the Bulacan Environment and Natural Resources Office (BENRO), together with personnel of the Marilao Police Station, 1st Provincial Mobile Force Company, and barangay officials conducted an antiillegal quarrying operation in Sitio Batya, Barangay Lambakin in Marilao that led to the arrest of the nine suspects.

in the act of excavating volcanic tuff known as “escombro” or “bulik,” a high-grade kind of rock mineral commonly used for landscape gardening which costs PHP150-PHP600 per block.

Seized from the illegal miners, he said, were two pickaxes, three axes, one sledgehammer, four shov els, and 100 chisels.

Arnedo said the ar rested persons, who were not identified, were using manual tools in extracting the minerals to lessen the noise during operations.

Proper education

YOU’ve heard it millions of times growing up, “you need to study hard so you can get a good education” but you also may be wondering why? It’s a good question to ask because too many people mindlessly believe that they need to go to school because their parents, teachers and friends say so. Education is certainly important but it’s good to know why it’s so valuable.

There are plenty of people who make it because of school and plenty who make it in spite of no proper education but the purpose of knowing why education is so impor

tant is useful in developing your own opinion and help ing you formulate your own opinion. Whether you agree or not or whether your plan on getting a higher education, there are some reasons. Some say that you can land a good job or make good money without a degree which can be true but we also live in a world that values education which opens up more doors. It’s much harder nigh impossible to get certain jobs with the right qualifications. This is one of the biggest benefits of going to college for many vocations.

Arnedo said the ar rested persons were caught

The illegal miners will be charged with mineral theft under Section 103 of Republic Act 7942 (Phil ippine Mining Act ), Sec tion 71-A of the Provincial Ordinance C-005 or the

Have my say

LIFE IS NOT FAIR

LIFE is a mixture of myriad torments and baffling situa tions that may even compel one unconsciously to erase off all the joyous occasions that they lived. Every mo ment in life is a bundle of unpredictable surprises, some good and some re ally tough.

Even we adults often have problems with the idea of fairness. The laborers in the vineyard certainly did. They received exactly what they had bargained for, yet they complained when others got the same pay for less work.

If this parable was a story about earned wages, the grumblers would have been quite right to complain. But this story is about the way God deals with us, and how can we say that God is not fair?

Fairness means clear ness and being free from fault or stain. Fairness is the light-colored, hopeful and plausible part of our life - the span between life and death. Life is and cannot always be fair - of course

not! But we could make it a little bit fairer, though many times our world is ruled by falseness.

Fairness requires people to be put into categories. Anyone who fulfills certain requirements will receive a certain reward, regardless of differences in the situa tion. But only God knows that categories only outline the sort of people we are. He knows that each one of us is unique and with individual needs.

In our everyday life, do we really practice the idea of fairness at our workplace and in our dealings with others? How? Let’s analyze ourselves. May we learn what it means to be fair to another person... .

Because life isn’t fair doesn’t mean you should give up and keep asking why. Life is a never-ending race of learning. When bad things happen to you (or when something good doesn’t happen to you every time), it may not just be something bad happening

Infrastructure to power PH growth

IN his speech at the Presi dent’s Night conducted by the Manila Overseas Press Club at the Sofitel Plaza last week, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. emphasized the need to sustain and expand the country’s infrastruc ture program as a means to support growth for the now-recovering Philippine economy.

Marcos Jr. renewed his promise that his “Build Bet ter More” agenda will build on Duterte’s legacy program “Build, Build, Build,” and create and complete more infrastructure projects in his term.

Under his own infra structure program, Filipinos will expect grander and more ambitious projects not only to provide convenience to commuters and support mobilization, but also to generate employment for more Filipinos.

Early this month, Marcos graced two of the country’s big-ticket infrastructure projects—the groundbreak ing rites for the construc tion of the Ortigas and Shaw Boulevard stations of the Metro Manila Sub way Project (MMSP) and the launching of the Clark International Airport in Mabalacat City, Pampanga.

MMSP is a multi-billion project spanning a 33-kilo meter route and covers 17 stations from North Av enue in Quezon City to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Pasay City. The subway will use a fleet of 80 eight-car train sets sourced from Japan, with each set supposedly able to carry as many as 2,242 passengers.

Once completed and fully operational, the project is expected to cut travel time to only 35 minutes from one hour at present.

Marcos Jr. also recently graced the official opening of the Clark International Airport -- a facility expected to be a key contribution in the country’s goal to becoming a logistics center of Asia.

The development of the 110,000-square-meter new terminal building aims to decongest the Ninoy Aqui no International Airport (NAIA) in Metro Manila and targets to service around eight million passengers annually.

Aside from the Clark Airport and Metro Manila subway, some of the projects that will be implemented include the North-South Commuter Railway, and Light Rail Transit (LRT) Line 1 Cavite Extension Project. Also linked to the BBM program are more specific infrastructure ini tiatives such as the Network Development Program, As set Preservation Program and Bridge Program.

Cognizant of the chal lenges though, Marcos highlighted the need for “unity” -- the battlecry of his administration since the beginning of the campaign, by strengthening partner ships with other countries as well as the private sector for the achievement of these goals.

“In the uncertain times that we are facing, these partnerships will stabilize our transformation into the post-pandemic, new

to you. It might be a chance to learn something new — about yourself, about the way the world works, the people around you which would propel you to a new level.

The moment you start thinking about why life is hard for you, that’s when you start being unfair to yourselves. Accept the fact that you can’t always be happy, winning, or not getting sick. Each of these makes you stronger when you overcome them.

global economy. And it is an uncertain world that we are facing, and it is an uncertain future that makes those partnerships all the more important,” he said.

“No man is an island” -- this is how I describe the president’s call for unity for the growth of our country. Even in achieving this goal, the public sector cannot do it all by itself in the same way that the private sector cannot prosper without the support from the govern ment.

The private sector can be the engine of development, innovation and job creation, but the firepower that pro pels it should be the govern ment, whose main function is to develop, secure and support business environ ments through sound and strong policies and laws.

Similarly, there is a need for the Philippines to continue strengthening relationships with other countries, as this will bol ster trade and lure foreign investments that are both major contributors to the country’s gross domestic product.

Seamless collaboration and collective action are imperative to the fulfill ment of programs that will benefit the country and the people. But ultimately, these partnerships must be supported by concrete decisions, stronger policies, and initiatives to promote

The contraband was in a parcel shipped by a certain Benjamin Huffman, from the United States and al legedly consigned to the Justice chief’s son.

Remulla, in a hand written statement released Thursday, vowed that he will neither “intervene in nor influence” his son’s predica ment.

Remulla said he has to abide by the oath of office when he assumed his new role as Justice secretary.

He also thanked the PDEA for doing its job “without fear or favor.”

Meantime, Marcos re jected calls to use his legal powers as chief executive to end former senator Leila de Lima’s detention.

This, after Albay 1st District Rep. Edcel Lag man asked Marcos to “order prosecutors to move for the dismissal of criminal cases where inculpatory evidence is lacking.”

Lagman said such move could not be considered an intrusion into the courts’ domain, but Marcos thought otherwise.

“I think urging pros ecutors to do one thing or another is interfering. So, that’s why I have said we are very, very clear that we have three departments of government,” Marcos said. “Pabayaan natin. Hindi na man natin pinagduduhanan ang process eh (Let them do their work. We should not doubt the process).”

Marcos, nevertheless, ensured that he will continue to monitor De Lima, who was a victim of a recent hostage-taking incident at the Philippine National Police Custodial Center at Camp Crame in Quezon City on Sunday.

“I think the process is there we are continuing to monitor what is going on,” he said, adding that De Lima never asked him to “do anything” when he spoke to her after the incident.

De Lima is facing charges of allegedly coddling drug lords while she was Justice secretary, in exchange for the inmates’ monetary sup port for her Senate run.

The hearing on the crimi nal drug cases against De Lima was reset to Oct. 24. ( with Lloyd Caliwan/PNA )

The Call for Digitized – Instruction in facilitating learning

Today’s teachers are faced with a dilemma. Students are exposed to a variety of media on a daily basis. The media exposure presents chal lenges for teachers striving to engage their students in a traditional classroom set ting. Traditional classroom teachers are faced with the challenges of delivering in struction that competes with the media-rich and interac tive experiences the typical student is exposed to daily. Excellent education leads to the success of life. Effective teaching is concerned with the students as a person and with his general develop ment. When students are faced with lecture – based instruction and repetitive drill-and-practice, many of them quickly lose interest because they crave to inter activity.

Clearly, educators in the 21st-Century are faced with the challenge of finding new, interactive ways of teaching age-old concepts in new, media-driven and interactive ways. Especially the Philip pines is now craving for its new goal to generate gradu ates which are information, media, and technology skills – driven individual.

Digitized – instruction is designed by teachers and experts to assure authentic knowledge on the part of the pupil. An authentic use of technology is using it as a tool to accomplish a complex task. Digitized - instruction can be more meaningful if one knows how manipulate it. To better prepare students for the 21st century educa tion, it is now the time for the department to introduce the new innovation in classroom.

Why School Leaders Should Reveal Their Failures

If you’re a school leader who oozes achievement and sprints up the educational ladder your co-workers probably resent you to some extent. New research says high-achievers can win over their colleagues with a simple approach. This is by sharing the failures they encountered on the path to success. It’s more novel and inspiring for others to learn about some one’s mistakes. One way to do that is to acknowledge your struggles or shortcomings.

Malicious envy is a de structive emotion that makes people feel inferior by com parison, even to the point of wishing they could tear down the successful person. This type of envy can be toxic in the workplace, leading employees to behave less cooperatively, and making people feel more justified in behaving unethically

On the other hand, teach ers who heard their principals disclose previous failures

believed the person had more “authentic pride” and came across as confident rather than arrogant. They also got the impression that this principal put a lot of effort into overcoming obstacles, and that made them feel less malicious envy and more “benign envy.” Benign envy brought out fuzzier feel ings, with listeners not only believing the principal was deserving of success, but also feeling motivated to improve their own performance.

In addition, teachers can relate to facing obstacles, upon hearing about the suc cessful principal’s missteps and can not only decrease internal competition among colleagues, but motivate other teachers to strive for success. Also principals could con sider “humanizing” members of the team by encouraging people to share their mistakes as a team-building exercise to improve communication and collaboration.

Electronics towards students

WE are surrounded by wireless technologies every where through the rise of mobile devices, space tech nology is skyrocketing in the form of small satellites and nanotechnology is enabling major breakthroughs in fields like solar energy harvesting. Studying electronics focuses strongly on researching and building hardware for these technologies, paving the way for a fluent shift towards a career in the industry or an academic postgraduate path.

Students understand the substantial dynamics and key scientific theories of their chosen specification area. Students can design and build technological hardware relevant to their chosen speci fication area. Students are em powered to possess a strong theoretical background and a

research-oriented, scientific and academic approach to solving problems. Students are experts in technologies that change rapidly and will in many ways redefine the world we live in.

Students can approach their electronics studies from both industrial and scientific perspectives. They can direct their studies either towards a theoretically-oriented man ner or more hands-on prac tical applications. Thus, the program is a combination of theoretical and practi cal courses that consist of lectures, independent exer cises, computer simulations, laboratory work and group assignments. The develop ment of scientific attitudes is one of the goals that scientific education seeks to achieve among students.

Global education

GLOBAL education em phasizes the unity and inter dependence of human society, developing a sense of self and appreciation of cultural diver sity. It is a mental development program that seeks to improve global human development based on the understanding of global dynamics through the various sectors of human development delivery.

In formal education as a mode of human development delivery, it is integrated into formal education programs as an advanced program where global dimensions to local problems are appreciated through interconnectivity. Its first phase began as an undertaking to restructure education and society in the 1960s and 1970s through the initiatives of educationalists,

NGOs and intergovernmental organizations. The program evolves with the Internet and is in its virtual interconnec tivity phase through social media and other global public spheres. This global approach to mental development seeks to fix the failing curriculumbased global education pro gram that is stuck in limited subject knowledge based on theories that have failed the world hinged on memoriza tion without visual exposure to knowledge development resources and global culture limited by access to human development resources. In stead, the program seeks to improve the global mental resources pool through the appreciation of global dynam ics and local perspectives on issues.

SPED schools in CDO

DOES your child suffer from any learning disabilities? Provide him/her with the best education thanks to the best special school centers in Cagayan de Oro City.

We always want the best for our children so it is im portant to rightly choose a school center from any child hood education to high school and beyond. This choice has more weight when our kids have attention issues and other concerns that we can consider as a barrier for their learning, either this barrier is physical or mental.

If your kid has special needs because of autism, Asperger’s syndrome, any

mental retardation or physi cal disability, you are in the right place. There are many private schools which are specialized in special needs education as well as other special school centers in Cagayan de Oro City whose education policy consists of making your child’s develop ment and experience not only easily reachable but also as enjoyable as possible.

It can be hard to find the right school where to place a special needs kid. Choose a school where the teachers have special training and experience working with the kind of issues and disorders your kid has.

Teachers Influence on Student Engagement in High School

For teachers, maintain ing pupils’ interest in their learning presents a constant challenge. When students are given the chance to work together with their peers, engagement levels are higher. We are aware of this because education is a social activity. Give each of your students a role during group work to encourage participation and empower their learning. Set standards and expectations for them around what constitutes a successful collaborative ef fort. A vital skill in the job is the capacity to collaborate well with others. When kids leave school, they will be better equipped for team contexts if you can foster a community of learners in your classroom.

Students frequently lose focus when the learning process is monotonous. In contrast, when students are engaged, they sustain their attention and learn the mate rial being taught even more

effectively. Learning and suc cess for students depend on student participation. Making the learning process of stu dents more engaging results in greater course achievement, greater satisfaction with the learning process, and a higher graduation rate for students. Student engagement is the level of interest, focus, enthu siasm, optimism, and passion that students demonstrate while taking a course.

All facets of a student’s learning and development can be seen as being held together by student engage ment. Student involvement not only improves the learning experience for the students, but it also has positive effects on the teaching process. Stu dents who exhibit high levels of behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement are more likely to achieve academic success, feel more connected to their school, and have better social-emotional health.

Lumbatan to Tamparan District Hospital will only take 70 minutes to reach the place, Dr Ali added.

Examining collaboration constraints faced by General and Special Education Teachers

Collaboration occurs when in dividuals from two or more parties communicate to achieve common goals that are interdependent, long term, and complex. Their interactions deepen and become more complex through collaboration. This partnership becomes collaboration when goals involve the development of a new service that utilizes the expertise of both parties. Research suggests that collaborations facilitate overall agency performance and support those involved in tackling complex social issues. Through col laboration, it encourages establishment of long-term relationships as it seeks greater engagement opportunities of participants. Collaborations can result in greater innovation while conserving resources to reach shared goals.

A collaborative mindset includes a willingness to discuss, compromise, and engage in a mutually dependent partnership for the purpose of ac complishing larger and more complex goals. Numerous researches perceive collaboration as individuals with diverse expertise working together to achieve mutually agreed upon objectives.

Ownership of a positive attitude, interpersonal skill capability, and per ceived professional competency and confidence are several key factors to be recognized and understood when the collaborative process among special educators, general educators, and related service personnel is fostered.

Ritzman et al. (2006) noted the support collaboration offers to teachers when working with students with significant special needs. The idea of having professionals from various disciplines working together and collaborating was tied to the long term success of students with special needs.

Examining the perspectives of newly appointed special education teachers, Conderman and Stephens (2000) reported that novice special educators found collaborative relation ship development more challenging than many other aspects of teaching.

The inclusion setup in special edu cation requires collaboration. However, it faces different barriers such as imperfect relationships among professionals, lack of cooperation, and disagreement in deciding the best strategies and forms of action. General and special educa tion teachers experience intrapersonal and interpersonal value conflicts when

collaborating. Both general and special education teachers find constraint on collaboration in terms of lesson plan ning and instruction due to the depth of content knowledge for special education teachers.

General education teachers also find enormous workload assignments and in effect, finds lack of time to al locate for collaboration. They find it to be the biggest constraint towards achieving collaboration. The teachers also find the large number of pupils to be a constraint which usually ranges from 40-50 pupils. Because of this, they have difficulty finding time to focus on the child with special needs and col laborate with the resource teacher.

Special education teacher, on the other hand, finds difficulty in terms of the attitude of the general education teacher. They often find the general education teacher to be negative towards collaborating. This usually occurs when the student with special needs show slow progress and insignificant progress over time which eventually discourages the general education teacher who have invested time and effort to help those students. They then think that it is better to spend time helping other students or doing other issues. The general education teachers become reluctant to spend time collaborating with special education teachers in order to help students with special needs.

The general education teacher’s mood affects greatly the collaboration with the special education teacher. If the general teacher is in a good mood then he is more encouraged to communicate and vice versa. The collaboration with the general education teacher depends also to the nature of the relationship with special education teacher wherein if the relationship is positive then they may collaborate.

Sometimes, the general teacher feels that he is more knowledgeable and skillful than the special education teacher. Thus, this perception influ ences the collaboration because the general education teacher sees that it is a waste of time to work with the special education teacher.

There are also general education teachers who lack the awareness of the importance of collaboration. Collabora tion is also affected when there is a lack of support from school administrators and families.

…gray can be an option

We are now living on a VUCA world where Vulner ability, Uncertainty, Complex ity, Ambiguity surrounds us. Challenges and adversities overwhelmed our day to day living and all facets of our daily undertakings were turned upside down and whirled the other way around when covid-19 pandemic hit us.

Learning environment, Commitment and partner ship among stakeholders, Availability and management of technological infrastruc ture are the three external factors prevalently affecting our schools. These factors have been impacting the performance of our schools in general even before the pandemic scenario and were noted to intensify in greater heights now that our educa tional system is faced with a

new landscape.

As school heads, we real ized that we must be strong like a Narra tree yet pliant like a bamboo to meet the demands of time whatever the circumstances may be.

The Covid-19 pandemic had shaken the educational strata not only in the Philippines but as well as all over the world. There was even a call for “Academic freeze” or suspension or cancellation of academic school year, however, the stand of the department is strong and did not waver --- education must continue, learning does not stop and should never stop.

In this VUCA world we live in, where not everything is black and white, and gray can be an option, everybody must learn the art of discipline and resiliency by heart and by soul.

The annual expo provides micro, small and medium-scale enterprises the opportunity and venue to showcase their products and services, and expand their network and linkages.

The National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) sa Amihanang Mindanao will also be held simultaneously at the Atrium on the same dates through the Department of Science and Technology Region 10.

As the MFC Partner Country, India will have the largest exhibit at the Oro BEST Expo 2022 where it will showcase its food and ag riculture technology innovations and renewable energy applications.

It will also host a Welcome Din ner and Fellowship with an India Cultural Night at the Atrium on the MFC’s opening date, October 26, 2022.

The Embassy of India in Manila, through Ambassador Shambhu Kumaran, has been aggressively establishing linkages with regional business organiza tions in the Philippines to promote greater participation and partner ship for sustainable agricultural growth and enhanced food security between the two nations.

“We do recognize the Phil ippines is a very large country, and a lot of business activities in the outreach have to happen at the regional level, and the Oro Chamber is one of the very first chambers that we have engaged and the outcomes have been very, very positive,” said Indian Ambas sador to the Philippines Shambhu S. Kumaran in a pre-recorded message during the 2nd Quarter General Membership Meeting of the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry Founda tion, Inc. (Oro Chamber) held July 8th at Upper Canitoan, Cagayan de Oro.

H.E. Kumaran expressed his delight with how the budding re lationship with the Oro Chamber which commenced on the 18th of May with the Indian Business Road Show was now being taken forward.

This was followed by a courtesy call of Oro Chamber officials at the Indian Embassy in Manila on June 14 to firm up India’s participa tion as a Partner Country for the Mindanao Business Conference to be hosted by the Oro Chamber in Cagayan de Oro City on October 26-30, 2022.

“I was very happy to receive Pres. Ray Talimio and his team were here a few weeks ago, and we did discuss the outcomes of that business road show. Sectors that were identified appeared quite promising, in particular, the IT and education sectors, renewable energy, ceramics, chemicals, and of course, agriculture,” the envoy noted.

“We would like to maintain this active engagement with the chamber, as part of the embassy’s regional outreach with the regional business bodies of the Philippines,” he added.

Oro Chamber hosted the India Business Roadshow in partnership with the Indian Embassy last May 18, 2022.

The virtual event presented business opportunities and po tential partnerships between lo cal businesses and their Indian counterparts. Areas of interest and opportunities discussed included agribusiness and packaging, chemi cals, agrochemicals, construction (ceramics & plumbing), IT and digital, education technology, infrastructure and renewable energy.

Among the Indian businesses which presented were SABIC (Mr. Janardhanan Ramanujalu), Advanta Seeds (Mr. Seraj Ahmad), Tata Consultancy Services Asia Pacific (Mr. Girish Ramachan dran), Hero Future Energies (Mr. Oman Singh), CAPEXIL (Mr. Samir Kumar Ghosh), Transrail Lighting Ltd. (Mr. Sanjay Vohra), Aptech Ltd. (Mr. Kallol Mukher

jee), and Indofil Philippines, Inc. (Mr. Narendra Sagrolikar).

“I’m aware there have been continuing discussions on the edu-tech side, especially on the IT education upskilling and reskilling. I welcome this and commit again to support this activity,” H.E. Kumaran said.

He cited how India is not only the fastest growing large economy in the world, but its fastest growing democracy as well.

“And we are very keen, and we have seen a lot of energy in the India-Philippines relationship. It’s an old relationship, but it has a lot of new dimensions and the economic and trade engagement is one of the critical new dimen sions,” he noted.

The envoy cited how President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. was very, very supportive of a stronger engage ment with India and continuing the new energy and new dynamism in our bilateral partnership.

“We have identified agriculture as one of the key areas in addition to health care, which is again an important area, the financial sec tor, fin-tech and a variety of other areas including IT where we have a very strong cooperation already,” H.E. Kumaran shared.

“So I look forward very much to continuing this engagement with the Oro Chamber , and look ing ahead, we are keen to have an active Indian presence at the Mindanao Food Congress coming up later this year,” he stressed.

We hope to highlight innova tions in agriculture technology and renewable energy applications during the food congress,” said Nishikant Singh, First Secretary on Economic and Commerce of the Embassy of India, who rep resented the Indian ambassador during the event.

H.E. Kumaran expressed his optimism in continuing the In dian Embassy’s engagements with regional business bodies like the Oro Chamber and was looking forward to see a delegation from the chamber visit India later this year or early next year.

“And we would continue to work with Pres Talimio and the team there to identify those areas and sectors which are of interest, so that this can be a process of engagement with multiple points of contact, so we will have maximum chances of success,” the envoy said.

“We are all coming out of a tough time with the pandemic and we now need to find new energy, new drivers of growth. We do have serious challenges to confront. And working together, in partnership,. I believe that India and the Philippines have a better future, a peaceful future for our people and a more prosperous society.”

He also placed fourth in the standard chess competition but had the same number of seven wins out of 10 board games by the second and third place only to be outpointed by the quotient system, a rare feat for a neophyte player at his tender age.

Raffy Pagkaliwagan, trainer coach of Givero, said he is confi dent that the boy could become a national champion at 12, almost the same goal achieved by Wesley

in his rise to fame in chess.

At 14, So became the youngest Filipino ever to earn the title of grandmaster, the highest status conferred by the country’s chess governing body.

Like Gabriel, So was nine years old when started competing in junior tournaments and became champion in the 2003 Philippine National Chess Championships in the Under 10 section.

Pagkaliwagan, however, said they will not allow Gabriel would experience the same sad fate as Wesley that went to represent the United States in 2019 because of the lack of support from the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP).

“What happened to Wesley was a lesson learned. NCFP assured us this will not happen to Gabriel who saw his great potential when he becomes professional in the years ahead,” the trainer, who is a licensed national chess arbiter, said.

Givero said he started to be come interested in chess when he was 2. He said he became curious while watching tournaments on YouTube that he tried playing with a computer-generated opponent to hone his skills.

At 5, Gabriel started play ing chess tournaments at school when he was in Kindergarten II.

He went further to join tourna ments outside school and became champion at 8.

“I saw the brilliant moves of Wesley and I studied hard how he did it,” Gabriel said.

His mother Rachel Givero, a Music, Arts, Physical Education, and Health teacher at Trento Na tional High School, recalled she saw his son playing chess at 2.5 years old with a computer prompt ing her to buy him a magnetic chess board.

She believed Gabriel is a gifted child since she noticed his fast cognitive development when he was only five days old.

Gabriel can draw the main features of the world map and has a deep interest in astronomy, his mother said.

Rachel said classical music was Gabriel’s lullaby when he was an infant and this had helped in his mental conditioning.

“He needs proper development guidance from a psychologist as a preparation when he will level up his competition,” the mother said.

“Our goal is to make him a young chess grandmaster at the right time,” Rachel said.
