Herlita Caraan, National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB)-Region 12 head, said the results of the HDI showed that South Cotabato garnered a composite index of 0.636.

It was followed by North Cotabato with a composite index of 0.518, Sultan Kudarat with 0.466, and Sarangani with 0.386.

Dr. Lucien Anthony Acac, the city veterinarian, said the fees represented 91,576 hogs, 10,534 cattle, 1,677 goats, 577 horses, 369 ostriches, and 266 carabaos slaughtered at the city’s slaughterhouse here last year.

The city veterinarian office has also condemned several carcasses of hogs and unknown kilograms of internal organs found unfit for consumption, he said.

AVAO City -- Small banana farmers in some parts of Davao del Norte have started to intercrop cacao in their farms to mitigate the impact of problems that hit the banana industry in recent months.

The Federation of Cooperatives in Mindanao, an umbrella organization of agrarian reform communitybased cooperatives whose members are into banana farming, has started training members on how to intercrop cacao in their farms.

The Davao Region is the country’s top producer and the world’s third biggest banana producer.

For its other initiatives to help the typhoon victims, the bank started the

EXPORT of coconut commodities has earned for the region US$117.72 million during the third quarter of 2012.

Records from the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) region 10 show that the value of export sales during the period was higher by two percent from the US$115.29 million earned in the same period in 2011.

The volume of coconut commodities exported during the quarter, on the other hand, grew remarkably by

56 percent to 113,203 metric tons, totally recovering from a 27 percent reduction in the first quarter of the year.

Though the total volume exported went up, the slight increase in the value of export sales was due to the decline in the global prices of coco-based products as a result of high soybean oil supply in the global market, said Engr. Cecilio Clarete, Chief Economic and Development Specialist of the National Economic and Development Authority

(NEDA).

Among the coco-based products, coconut chemicals and coconut oil were the top export commodities during the quarter earning US$61.98 million and US$27.32 million, respectively.

Other earners were copra meal pellets with US$10.27 million, desiccated coconut with US$4.97 million, coconut water with US$4.71 million, and coconut shell charcoal with US$3.79 million.

The newly signed loan as of September 2012 is the Jalaur River Multipurpose Irrigation Project-Phase II, which has a net commitment of US$207.88 million.

Auto sales up 11% in 2012 COMPANIES belonging to the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines Inc (Campi) and the Truck Manufacturers Association (TMA) on Thursday said their combined 2012 sales zoomed by more than a tenth from the previous year.

Campi and TMA members sold 156,649 vehicles last year, 11-percent higher than 2011 sales of 141,170 units.

In December alone, sales reached 15,369 units, up 48.4 percent from the previous year’s 10,358 and 5.1-percent more than November’s 14,620.

Last year, 48,328 passenger cars were sold, up 8.4 percent from 44,582 in 2011.

C om mercia l veh icles , which comprised 69.15 percent of 2012 vehicle sales, contributed 108,324 units, 12.2-percent higher than 2011’s 96,588.

Last year’s sales recovered from the 2011 slump caused by the vehicle supply shortage that resulted from disasters that stuck major car manufacturers Japan and Thailand that year.

About 50 percent of the vehicles sold in the Philippines were assembled locally while the rest were imported mainly from neighboring Asian countries.

Campi president Roque Rommel T. Gutierrez attributed the robust sales in December and for the entire 2012 to strong demand driven by the growing economy as well as the influx of new car models

and variants.

Auto sales in December are also traditionally higher as many consumers buy cars during the holidays.

“We are very pleased with the industry’s strong showing for the year. Moreover, this sales performance is a sign that car companies’ supply was able to meet the growing demand.

For next year, customers can expect more from Campi and its members as it looks to introduce more exciting models, which will propel the local automotive industry to grow further. I am confident that Campi’s performance in the coming years will continue to significantly contribute to the Philippine economy,” Gutierrez said in a statement.

Among the 16 Campi-TMA members, Toyota Motor Philippines Corp led the pack in 2012 with sales of 65,396 vehicles or almost a fifth higher than the previous year’s 54,593.

of Campi-TMA sales.

Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corp sold 34,915 units or 7.1-percent higher than the previous year’s 32,603, ending 2012 with a 22.29 market share.

Honda Cars Philippines Inc sold 12,653 vehicles; Isuzu Philippines Corp, 11,759 units; and Ford Motor Co Philippines Inc (including Mazda), 10,092.

Campi and TMA group a mix of domestic vehicle assemblers as well as importers. Other pure car importers belong to the Association of Vehicle Importers and Distributors Inc (AVID), a number of members of which bolted out of Campi in 2011.

Campi had projected that combined sales with TMA and AVID in 2012 would reach about 180,000 units. This year, breaching the 200,000-unit mark is possible, Campi had said.

Their paths crossed in Didipio, a village which hosts a Gold-Copper mining project of OGPI. At that time, the elementary school here do not have a children’s drum and lyre corps organized. During public ceremonies, children were not able to participate just like their counterparts in other villages.

The project aimed to help Didipio children form a drum and lyre group in their school, and so, in November 12, 2010 Children’s hour and OGPI employees sponsored a big event which included a

skills training in performing drum and lyre. Other events like singing contest and a 4x100 meter dash relay was held.

The same partnership hosted another event was held in July 28-29, 2012.

A trainer was hired to enhance the skills of the Didipio Elementary School drum and lyre corps.

Organizers believed these events could be a mechanism to improve the students’ personality, productivity and self-discipline; to train them to be a whole-rounded individuals. The project worked to raise funds to donate a complete drum and lyre set for Didipio elementary school.

Employees who signed up an “Authorization to Deduct” form shall be enrolled in the activity. “There is more happiness in giving than in receiving so you can give more than that,” reminds Rhodora Songayab, OGPI’s HR Manager.

“Who knows? Our project with Children’s Hour would bring out a wonder kid out of Didipio this time,” added Songayab. # FCHJr

Food: To delight, not harm THE holidays are past, so is the partying and the abundance of food. Most, if not all, go back to the basics with their self-imposed diet (including myself).

And that is great news indeed. Food, we know, is a form of addiction. It brings joy and satisfaction: but, if one were to gatherings, though simple and unplanned, becomes more fun and meaningful, when there is food as well. Thus, food becomes a delight.

But not so, when the food or drink that one consumes brings with it illness. Food poisoning can and do happen. It is a common illness, that is short lived, mild in most cases, but, can be fatal at times. It can affect one person or a group of persons ( in that case it becomes an outbreak ). It is non selective of age, sex or status in life, for, it can affect anyone.

The onset of the symptoms depend on the contaminant. It may be caused by a virus, a bacteria, parasite and even toxic agents from pesticides. The symptoms may occur 48 hours or even less, from the time of consumption of the food or drinks. It usually presents as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain or cramps, and loose bowel movements.

Bloody stools, fever and chills, and even neurological symptoms may be present, depending on what caused the poisoning. In 68% of cases, the cause of the poisoning may not be known.

This is a true story about a young lady who got so tired of living with her strict parents that she ran away from home. But she soon found out that life was not easy on her own. Afraid that someone had broken into her parent’s house, she ran inside and woke up the sleeping old lady and told her she had finally come home. Mother and daughter began to cry as they held each other. The daughter said: “I thought someone had broken open the door!” But the mother shook her head and answered gently: “My dear, from the day you left I’ve kept the door unlocked.”

Just a few weeks back, we observed National Banking Week—a special opportunity that seeks to highlight the benefits banks provide to society.

National Banking Week, annually held every first week of January, enjoins all banking institutions and their branches to undertake promotional and publicitygenerating activities regarding their significant role in the Filipino community, pursuant to Proclamation No. 2250 dated 10 December 1982.

This year’s theme is “Masaganang Lipunan, Bunga ng Salaping Iniingatan. Magimpok sa Bangko.”

The Financial Consumer Affairs Group (FCAG) of the

Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, in its weekly e-newsletter, stressed the need for continuing campaign efforts to highlight the importance of saving in banks.

Citing the 2009 Consumer Finance Survey conducted by the Bangko Sentral’s Department of Economic Statistics, the FCAG disclosed that eight out of ten or 78.5 percent of Filipino households still do not have a bank deposit account.

T h e s u r ve y f u r t h e r showed that 92.8 percent of that figure stated “the lack of money” as the primary reason for the absence of a bank account. On the other hand, the remaining 7.2 percent of the households cited the following: • do not need a bank/

cash account (1.7 percent); • cannot manage an account (1.5 percent); • minimum balance is too high (1.2 percent); • do not like to deal with banks/financial institutions (1 percent); and • others not specified (1.8 percent).

Lastly, the BSP data revealed that households in areas outside the National Capital Region were found less inclined to open bank accounts than those residing in Metro Manila.

“What people ought to realize is that saving money in banks is way more advantageous than keeping it elsewhere such as in piggy banks, in a locked drawer or cabinet at home, or through the traditional under-the-

The real lifestyle diseases BECAUSE of the many comforts and amenities brought about by factors like advances in the sciences and technologies, we are also developing certain lifestyles that together with their many advantages bring with them certain dangers.

Medical doctors now talk, for example, of lifestyle diseases that more than genetic or hereditary causes are consequences of a mix of unhealthy attitudes, environmental factors, and the usual food and drink usually taken these days.

These lifestyle diseases can refer to heart attacks, strokes, cancer, etc., that are becoming the prominent killers of our times. They are brought about usually by a lifestyle, and even of a generalized culture of indulgence that usually goes together with laziness, aimlessness and idleness.

So instead of healthy food like fish and veggies, many people now just go for meat and junk food. They tend to over-eat, making gluttony a kind of value to be learned

and lived these days.

Instead of the necessary physical exercise and activity, many of us spend hours just sitting before the computers or TV. These are the so-called couch potatoes. No wonder we have a lot of obese people and people with elevated sugar, blood pressure, etc.

There is also a surge of smoking and overdrinking.

Stress is also becoming more pronounced now. And I believe it’s more subjective than objective, because while it’s true that the sources of stress have increased, the capacity to handle it has also decreased, but to a degree that outpaces the sources of stress.

This phenomenon, I believe, is due to a large extent to the erosion of the spiritual foundations on which our life depends. Many people succumb handily to an easy, light and fun-filled ways of doing things.

They do not anymore see the value of suffering and sacrifice. They consider these elements in our life as purely negative, to be avoided at all

costs. They fail to see that the suffering and sacrifice are an integral part of our life here on earth, given our wounded human condition.

The suffering and sacrifice, the difficulties, trials and challenges can actually be an occasion to develop more virtues. And if we believe in the Christian faith, we would know that these things are precisely the means to our perfection and salvation.

But many of the people today are at least ignorant of the spiritual and religious meaning of suffering and of life in general. Many have even gone from religious ignorance to religious indifference and even beyond that, to religious hostility.

We now have many agnostics if not atheists, perhaps more of the practical type than of the theoretical type. This is the real lifestyle disease that we have now. It leads to a weakening of the spiritual foundation that gives support and nourishment to all the other aspects of life.

Amado Sagot, 68, of New Katipunan, a village in Sto. Tomas, a banana-producing town in Davao del Norte, hopes that intercropping cacao in his half-hectare banana farm will improve his income.

“The knowledge that we have learned through the program will help us not only in intercropping cacao but also in improving our knowhow in banana farming,” said Mr. Sagot of the Cacao-Banana Agri-Enterprise Development Program, which started in October and will end in February.

As a grantee, Mr. Sagot is obliged to impart what he has learned to other banana farmers in his community.

The federation hopes it will reach the 2,000 banana farmers that it intends to help with the training, said Flordelyn Saavedra, the program’s marketing head.

Ms. Saavedra added that aside from the 50 seedlings given to the trainees for free, they can also buy seedlings

at half the price, and that this will be a “big help to them.”

The program came about even as some farmers both in the province and in the nearby Compostela Valley are still reeling from the impact of super typhoon Pablo.

Stephen A. Antig, executive director of the Pilipino Banana Growers and Exporters Association earlier said the impact was bigger on small banana farmers considering they do not have the resources to rehabilitate their farms.

Based on association data, the industry sustained about P8 billion in damage.

Although the bulk of the damage was in Compostela Valley, farms in Davao del Norte, including those in Sto. Toma, were not spared as these were also submerged in water.

The report noted, however, that the DOH, “with support from the Health Cluster partners”, continue to augment medicines, medical services,

UN-OCHA’s report also said that acute respiratory infections (ARI) “remain the most common causes of medical consultations in Compostela Valley and Davao Oriental provinces where the majority of the Typhoon Bopha-affected communities are located, according to the Health Cluster. This is attributed to exposure to extreme conditions, crowded living facilities and reduced immunity, increasing susceptibility to communicable diseases.”

Acute water diarrhea (AWD) remains the Number 2 most common cause of consultations in the Pablodevastated areas, according to the UN-OCHA report.

However, the number of those seeking medical help for ARI and AWD have declined, especially in Compostela Valley, which UN-OCHA attributed to the “decrease in the number of reporting health facilities and improved conditions due to humanitarian assistance.”

Even UK-based expert disaster response and humanitarian volunteer Ed Cox of the Disaster Aid International was forced to go “home” to Cagayan de Oro City, a 12-hour drive away from this municipality, after contracting what is called a “traveller’s diarrhea” (TD).

Cox suffered TD after spending almost a month in Baganga, Davao Oriental helping the survivors rebuild their lives and community.

in the provinces of Davao Oriental and Compostela Valley. Volunteers in nearby Cateel have to endure the daily ration of water from a firetruck. A volunteer fireman told this reporter that the water in the firetruck is safe for drinking since “it is treated and approved for drinking by the ICRC.” “But if your system is weak, you’ll just have to bear the consequences. If not, you have to suffer the consequences of drinking softdrinks (soda or carbonated drinks) to quench your thirst,” he added.

Volunteers narrate how they also have to suffer the indignity of defecating in damaged toilets in the destroyed Ban-ao Elementary School here or even on secluded portions of the beach (if they can find one) if they can’t endure queuing up in Barangay Chairperson Mera A. Ching’s house or other hospitable survivors’ toilets.

“This indignity is nothing compared to what the survivors here have to endure daily just to survive,” a volunteer who refused to be identified told this reporter.

UN-OCHA’s report also noted that, among others, “among the badly-affected groups are hospital and rural health unit staff, leaving the vulnerable population among the affected communities in dire need of prov iders of specia lized health care and medicines.”

Also, the “persistence of extreme weather has further affected access to health ser vices” in the affected areas.

PH posts surplus in rice production THE Department of Agriculture (DA) on Friday said the country has a production surplus of 464,820 kilos of rice in 2012.

DA Assistant Secretary Dante Delima, National Rice Program Coordinator, said palay production was estimated to reach 18.03 to 18.05 million metric tons (MT), higher than the 17.98 million MT forecast by the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS) last year.

Delima said initial data revealed that the country already met the requirement needs of its rice supply for a population of 95.8 million Filipinos.

“With a 1.90 percent annual growth rate, the coun-

try’s total population is now estimated at around 95.8 million with per capita rice consumption placed at 115 kilos. At this rate, annual rice consumption is pegged at 11.02 million MT,” he explained.

“If we compare the population rate with our production of 18.03 million MT, minus the 351,763 MT seed requirement for planting, our total rice equivalent at 65 percent recovery rate is around 11.492 million MT… more than enough to supply our food requirement,” he added.

Survivors bewail absence of disaster response in Baganga

BAN-AO, Baganga, Davao Oriental—Survivors have noted the “conspicuous absence” of so-called disaster response and humanitarian expert organizations in the area that badly and urgently needed their services.

Barangay Chairperson Mera A. Ching, who was among the survivors of Pablo’s wrath, said she has not heard nor seen anyone representing the United Nations’ many humanitarian organizations.

She was referring to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN-OCHA), among others.

“I have heard about UNOCHA. But no, they are not here in Ban-ao or in Baganga,” she told this reporter.

Ching said that only local and national organizations, civic groups and the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arms of the three big

television networks, and other volunteer groups have been doing the rounds of distributing aid to the survivors in Baganga.

She also questioned why these so-called disaster response and humanitarian expert organizations are holding its cluster coordination meetings in 5-star hotels in far-away Davao City, some 6 hours drive away from this coastal village that bounded the municipalities of Cateel and Baganga in the province of Davao Oriental.

Jimmy Geronimo, coordinator of the Agusanon Para Sa Bag-ong Pilipino, Inc. (Agus Pinoy) which holds office in San Francisco, Agusan del Sur, said that because of the

initial success of their pilot IDOFS Farm Project, they are planning to start 13 more for this year.

A one-hectare IDOFS techno-demonstration farm project located at Purok Sunrise, Barangay Buena Gracia, Talacogon town in Agusan del Sur owned by farmer cooperator Elirey J. Cabatana, his wife Susan and their four children, was visited by a team of media practitioners, farmer leaders and DA-RFU 13 personnel as one of the stops during a two-day expository tour to

This volunteer had a meeting with UN-OCHA National Disaster Response Advisor Agnes Palacio in one of the rooms of the Cateel District Hospital on December 29, 2012. During that meeting, Palacio allegedly said that UN-OCHA’s focus is Cateel because they are based in Cateel.

“Basically, what she told us in the meeting is that Baganga is on its own,” the volunteer said, adding: “I don’t care if they have been on the ground since Day 1 or even before that. What I care about is where is UNOCHA’s impact on the survivors? Why did the survivors never mention UN-OCHA? It is because it is basically unknown here because it has not made it presence known or felt.”

“A lso, U N-OCHA or even IOM [International Organization for Migration] are calling for cluster

coordination meetings in a five-star hotel in Davao City. Why should they hold meetings in that place very far away. There is just no sense to that. They always use ‘security issues’ as an excuse. What do they fear here? There is no security threat here. I am a foreigner here but I am at home here with these Pablo-survivors,” the volunteer said.

As of December 30, 2012, UN-OCHA has not yet operationalized its cluster system or cluster coordination in the municipal or provincial level. In fact, UN-OCHA was just setting up its temporary offices at the Cateel District Hospital grounds on December 29, 2012.

The UN-OCHA adopted the cluster coordination strategy after the UN General Assembly issued Resolution 46/182 in December 1991.

Fourteen years later, the Humanitarian Reform of 2005 introduced new elements

to humanitarian responses to improve capacity, predictability, accountability, leadership and partnership, with cluster approach as its most visible aspect.

“Clusters are groups of humanitarian organizations (UN and non-UN) working in the main sectors of humanitarian action, e.g. shelter and health. They are created when clear humanitarian needs exist within a sector, when there are numerous actors within sectors and when national authorities need coordination support. Clusters provide a clear point of contact and are accountable for adequate and appropriate humanitarian assistance. Clusters create partnerships between international humanitarian actors, national and local authorities, and civil society,” UN-OCHA said in its website.

It also explained that coordination is vital in emer-

gencies since good coordination “means less gaps and overlaps in humanitarian organizations’ work. It strives for a needs-based, rather than capacity-driven, response. It aims to ensure a coherent and complementary approach, identifying ways to work together for better collective results.”

Laurencio Batang, 59, one of the first inhabitants of the first “Tent Community” set up here by the Balay Mindanaw Group of NGOS (BMG) and the Disaster Aid International (DAI), said that even government agencies are absent.

“Where are they? They are badly and immediately needed here,” he told this reporter.

Despite the absence of the so-called disaster response and humanitarian expert organizations, the village of Ban-ao is slowly getting back on its feet again with the assistance of the Cagayan de Oro City-based BMG and its partner on the ground, DAI.

Despite the surplus in production, however, Delima said the government may still import about 100,000 MT of rice this year to be used as buffer stock, noting that the government needs to secure at least a 90-day rice supply to ensure stable prices.

“Traditionally, we are only required to have at least 30-day buffer stock. But for security proposes, we have hiked our rice stock requirement to about 90 days. But thanks be to God, the body can heal itself as its nature. If we allow then support the body correctly to do its action to function in a proper time, provide what the body correctly needs, it can do marvelous things as it supposed to be.

SOLUTION Here is what I believe we can do to stop the fast erosion or fast aging and diseases, we help the body remove the damage tissues, clogging in the system and help repair the malfunction organs. The body will do the reconstruction, like skin will be renewed, the liver can regenerate, the heart can pump exact blood to the system needed, and we can think clear.

1. Since we need to repair the damage or the malfunction, we need to remove the damage tissues or clogging by stop putting pollutants elements like high processes food that provides no nutrients to

the needed system and make the system malnourish. And eliminate in your plate the food that is high in preservatives, artificial, and additives because these will not help the body’s goal in removing the clogging and the damage tissues. It will just add and prevent or hinder the cleansing system.

2. We need fresh vegetables that have active ingredients for removing damage tissues and the clogging system. Fresh vegetables have more nutrients and micronutrients that will help the organs function.

A fresh vegetable has enzymes needed for changing the food or the clogging food, the longtime stored food in our system to useful energy.

Sometimes people rely only in supplements more than fresh vegetables because they don’t want the taste. If you are having problem with this, just let me know maybe I have a solution for you. But fresh vegetables are all we need. We can have them through fresh vegetable juicing and salad. If there is organic vegetables that must be your first priority in every meal, but if we can’t find them in our area, we just need to

clean with baking soda plus salt combined with kalamansi or lemon. We really need to eat fresh vegetables as our main course in every meal. Dried food can’t enter into the blood steam except the dried herbs that can be absorbed through its active ingredients mixed in the water. Dried food contain no nutrients that is needed for proper function and dried food contain more bulk that can stop the nutrients from entering into the blood stream for distribution and energy to the needed organs or cells. It will only give you fullness in the stomach but not in the cells. This makes the cells malnourish, damage or possible death due to famine.

3. The system needs to be moved and the cells continue to circulate because if it does, this is the start of clogging and dying of cells. According to some study, the body transport the digested and absorbed food to the cells then to the rest of the body but because of clogging or damage cells, this transport sometimes stops and stocked in one area of our system. That is why we need to jump, briskly walk, or exercise for this but do not overdo it. It will give
