COTANBATO City -Quality of life is better for people living in South Cotabato than the three other provinces in Region 12 or Soccsksargen Region, the region’s Human Development Index (HDI) showed. Herlita Caraan, National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB)-Region 12 head, said the results of the HDI showed that South Cotabato garnered a composite index of 0.636. It was followed by North Cotabato with a composite index of 0.518, Sultan Kudarat with 0.466, and Sarangani with 0.386. The HDI is a composite index measuring achievements in three basic dimensions of human development, which are: to lead a long and healthy life, to acquire knowledge and to have access to resources needed for a decent standard of living, Caraan said.

THE Cagayan de Oro City’s veterinarian office has collected a total of P2.6 million anti-mortem and post mortem service fees in 2012. Dr. Lucien Anthony Acac, the city veterinarian, said the fees represented 91,576 hogs, 10,534 cattle, 1,677 goats, 577 horses, 369 ostriches, and 266 carabaos slaughtered at the city’s slaughterhouse here last year. The city veterinarian office has also condemned several carcasses of hogs and unknown kilograms of internal organs found unfit for consumption, he said. Acac said meat inspectors had also condemned unvalued kilograms of ‘hot meats’ seized in the city’s public markets here.

Banana farmers start cacao intercropping

AVAO City -- Small banana farmers in some parts of Davao del Norte have started to intercrop cacao in their farms to mitigate the impact of problems that hit the banana industry in recent months.

The Federation of Cooperatives in Mindanao, an umbrella organization of agrarian reform communitybased cooperatives whose members are into banana farming, has started training members on how to intercrop cacao in their farms.
