URIGAO CITY— Amid the rising complaints over the massive harvesting and trading of sargassum, locally known as “samu,” Mayor Ernesto Matugas has issued an executive order banning such an activity in the locality, considering its impact on marine ecosystem and on people’s health.
The complaints came not only from concerned residents, but also from marine product traders, who claimed that the supply of fish has drastically declined, as a result of the unregulated sargassum collections. In his Executive Order No. 11 on May 17, Mayor

Matugas specifically disallowed the extraction, storage and transport of sargassum, a variety of seaweed abundant in this city. “It has been observed that there is rampant extraction, storage and further Sargassum in sacks awaiting transport to Cagayan de Oro and/or China. CAMP RAFAEL RODRIGUEZ, Libertad, Butuan City - One person, who was about to refuel his motorcycle at a gas station in Buenavista, Agusan del Norte was severally shot by ridingin- tandem men, causing his instantaneous death, afternoon of June 23, this year. The victim, Jun Bemasol Tabada, 39 years old, single, sustained several gunshot wounds in various parts of his body.
