Jalandoni of Bravo Company, 75 Infantry (Marauder) Battalion have discovered 10 gallons containing 176 superdyne dynamite explosive sticks at 125 grams per stick, and 480 meters detonating cord in Sitio Sta. Monica, Barangay Bunawan Brook, Bunawan, Agusan del Sur, morning of July 5, this year.

Said explosive materials were believed to have been owned by the SECOM 14, North Eastern Mindanao Regional Committee of the New People’s Army, under aka Mandi.

Afternoon of same day, another platoon of soldiers, under 1st Lt. Eddievir P. Pulida of Charlie Company, 75th IB have discovered a gallon containing 142 sticks of same kind of explosives in Purok 3, Sitio Mabog, Barangay San Roque, Bislig City.

Surigao Sur to identify economic growth drivers

Cagayan de Oro’s first international hotel chain is scheduled to open this month.

Tune Hotels Cagayan de Oro opens its 159 guest rooms on July 19 at its brand new 11-storey hotel in its trademark red-and-white motif in the heart of the Lapasan Central Business District.

“We’re going to open another three hotels in the Philippines by the end of this year,” Red Planet Hotels CEO Tim Hansing said in a statement. “We will have branches in Quezon City, Cagayan de Oro City and Davao City. We are expecting to have a total of 10 properties in the Philippines by 2014.”

ZAMBOANGA Sibugay––A father has narrowly escaped an attempt by a lone gunman to kill him, but his six-month old baby was shot and wounded in the attack in southern Philippines, police said.

Police said the gunman, who sneaked from an opened window of Roberto Pretila’s house in Ali Alsree village in R.T. Lim town and shot him, but missed.

The gunman escaped, but Pretila’s baby was wounded in the shooting.

Pretila told the police the bullet that m iss e d h i m h it t he baby who was sleeping in the crib in another room. The infant was rushed to hospital, he said.

It was not immediately known if Pretila has identified his attacker, but police said an investigation is going on to determine the motive of the shooting.

No individual has claimed responsibility for the shooting, but killings and gun attacks are a daily occurrence in the province.

Surigaonon singer wows Voice of Philippines judges with song from ‘Uwahig’

DAVAO City––A 21-year old singer from Surigao City made all four judges of the Voice of the Philippines contest turn around Saturday night with her rendition of a song from the Mindanao theatre production, “Uwahig.”

Juvie Pelos, an employee of a shipping firm who finished AB Political Science while a member of the Integrated Performing Arts Guild (IPAG) of the Mindanao State UniversityIligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), sang the Prologue (Song of the Poet) from IPAG’s play, “Uwahig” (Bukidnon for water).

The play had its World Premiere as Philippine entry to the UNESCO-International Theatre Institute 31st Theatre Olympics of the Nations in Manila in May 2006 and represented the country in the 2007 Taipei International Arts Festival.

“That was beautiful, that was beautiful. I’m blown away, I’m blown away. Wala akong masabi talaga,” said Bamboo, the first of four judges who turned around for Juvie Pelos during the blind auditions for Voice of the Philippines.

“Parang malayong narating namin dahil doon sa awit mo very, parang ano, very, very original. It’s not something na narinig ko ever. It took us a little while na maintindihan kung ano yung kanta pero you know what, this is too interesting to ignore,” said Lea Salonga, the second judge who turned around and who was chosen

Salonga, who has been singing in theatre productions since she was little and who gained international awards for Miss Saigon and Les Miserables, commended Pelos for her “originality” and for being “brave” in choosing that song during the audition.

Sarah Geronimo told Pelos, “dinala mo kami sa ibang dimensyon. Napaka-exceptional ng music mo. Ikaw yung perpektong magrepresent ng bansang Pilipinas, yung boses mo.”

Filipino-American rapper Allan Pineda or apl.de.ap of the Grammy Award-winning group, The Black Eyed Peas, said Pelos’ rendition of the song “took me way back home to my roots.”

He described Pelos as “my diwata.”

“Ay nakuha ko! Classically trained singer nakuha ko!,” Salonga gushed when Pelos chose her as mentor.

“Uwahig,” according to

IPAG, is a “deconstruction of the Maguindanao Indarapatra epic and the Bukidnon water legend,” that “resets into the mythic realm of wars, violence, and the degradation of the environment in Mindanao’s

postcolonial and postmodern landscape.”

“Weaving folklore in New Theatre, the play retells the story of two brothers who defend the land against darkness. Interspersed in the narrative are the flood

legends. Images of contemporary representations of darkness (war, hunger, evacuation, and environmental destruction) are shaped through digital images, puppetry, masks, music, chants, chorus, and poetry.”

P. Princesa’s Feast gets a new date

P UE RTO PRINC ES A CITY – The city government has identified a new date to continue the tradition of annually holding the revered mass tree planting project Pista Y Ang Cagueban (Feast of the Forest) on the mountains of Barangay Irawan.

According to George Vasquez of the city government under the office of Mayor Lucilo Bayron, the Pista Y Ang Cagueban will now be held on the last Saturday of the month, or on July 27.

It can be noted that the Pista Y Ang Cagueban, which was supposed to be held on June 29, was postponed due to lack of preparation because of the 2013 elections.

“We just had a recent meeting, and our Pista Y Ang Cagueban will now happen on July 27. We just moved it to be able to prepare,” Vasquez told

local media interviews.

Around eight hectares of land and tree saplings are currently being prepared in Barangay Irawan for the annual mass planting, and the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) is leading this with lawyer Reggie Tulali.

Unlike before when national artists were invited, this time, he said Bayron wants local talents to perform in the holding of the forest feast to give them time to shine.

Various stake holders are also going to be invited, including special guests from national offices.

“We are inviting everyone to participate in the Pista Y Ang Cagueban again this July. Let’s go to the mountains of Irawan to once again honor our environment by doing our share for her welfare,” he said. (PNA)

Zambo airport increases terminal fee ZAMBOANGA CITY – The Zamboanga International Airport (ZIA) has increased its terminal fee from P40 to P100 per passenger effective last Monday.

This came after the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) approved last year’s request of the ZIA to increase its terminal fee.

However, ZIA manager Celso Bayabos said they originally recommended for an increase of P150 per passenger but CAAP only approved a P60 increase for this year.

Bayabos said the new P100 terminal fee will be increased to P150 by June 2014 according to the conditions set by CAAP in granting approval to increase the terminal fee.

B ay ab o s s ai d t h i s amount will not be enough for the planned opera-

tional and maintenance needs of the airport terminal considering the dilapidated state of the facility.

He said the local airport’s share in the collection of terminal fee is only 10 percent since 90 percent is being turned over to the CAAP-central office.

The facilities of ZIA are not at par with airports in the cities of Manila, Cebu, Davao or even Cagayan de Oro. Although the airport is named as an international airport, it has stopped servicing international flights in the last few years.

ZIA used to ser ve planes plying the Zamboanga-Sandakan route in Sabah.

These days, ZIA serves only local flights to and from Manila, Cebu, Cagayan de Oro and Davao.

Batanes, ‘home of the winds,’ beckons local and foreign tourists BASCO – Batanes, comprising 10 islands in the Luzon Strait in the north of the Philippines between Luzon and Taiwan, beckons local and foreign tourists anytime of the year, according to tourism officials in the region.

The island province, the country’s smallest, in terms of population and land area, is the only province in the Philippines which experiences four seasons: autumn from September to November; winter from December to February; spring from March to May; and summer from June to August.

The other provinces enjoy only two seasons: rainy, from June to October; and dry, from November to May. Tourism officials say Batanes, which they describe as “home of the winds” considering it is swept luxuriously by the winds, is the “purest cultural destination” in this Southeast Asian archipelago, both for local and foreign tourists.

Its isolation from the rest of the islands of the country has enabled Batanes, 669 kms by air from Manila, or one hour and 17 minutes by airplane, to develop its own culture.

The island group is 162 km north of the country’s main island of Luzon and 190 kms south of Taiwan, separated from the Babuyan Islands of Cagayan Province in Luzon, by the Balintang Channel and from Taiwan by the Bashi Channel.

The Ivatans, the people who live in three of the 10 islands, are known for their frugality and humane lifestyle, according to tourism officials – traits

validated by recent visitors from Region 2 to which Batanes belongs, the other provinces being Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya and Quirino in the fertile and lush Cagayan Valley.

The provincial capital is Basco on Batan Island and the only other inhabited islands are Itbayat and Sabtang.

The northernmost island of the province, making it the northernmost in the Philippines, is Mavudis (Y’ami) Island.

Other islands in the chain are Misanga, Siayan, Ivuhos, and Dequey.

Batan, the seat of the provincial government, is where Mount Iraya is and has on its plate the Valugan Boulder Beach, known for its weathered rocks and pebbles skirting the pristine waters of the Pacific Ocean.

Itbayat is the home of the volcanoes considered by officials as the foundation of the island: Mount Riposed, which has a panoramic view of Itbayat and Mount Korobanan.

It is also here where the Nahili do Votox – an ancient settlement with boatshaped burial markers, similar to those sites for the Vikings in Europe – is found.

The third inhabited island, Sabtang, was declared in 1994 by the Dept. of Tourism, as one of the 12 Best Destinations in the Philippines.

Its shores boasts white sand beaches as well as rock formations while a natural coral condition is found in the island’s Duvek Bay. Ivatans, who have been observed by visitors to be trustworthy, polite and

peace-loving, take understandable pride in the landscape of their province, what tourists can experience here and the food tourism officials in the region say which makes up “delectable dishes (which) are definitely worth every cent.”

Officials say the location of Batanes, where the Pacific Ocean meets the China Sea, explains the teeming marine life of the islands.

Officials tell tourists and other visitors a Batanes sojourn would not be complete without tasting the local cuisines, which include fresh lobsters, coconut crabs, the Ivatan cuisine which includes “uvod” made of mixed deboned fish and core of banana and steamed with local herbs, yellow rice cooked with yellow ginger, and “dibang” or flying fish.

Some, who had previously visited the province from the other parts of the country, have described the group of islands as a “photographer’s heaven” – given the pleasant locals to traditional stone houses to the panorama of landscapes and seascapes “which try to tease the lenses of cameras.”

Batanes also takes pride in its steepes, cliffs, hedgerows and terrains of what some have described as an island paradise which can be experienced in bicycles -one of the basic means of transport here -- which can take a visitor to different breathtaking sights.

One tourism official has said there is a new kind of fun, excitement and relaxation in Batanes, where time seems to stand still any time of the year. (PNA)

China-Vietnam tourism sea route resumes NANNING -- A sea route for tourism between southern China and Vietnam has resumed after being closed for two years.

The route, connecting China’s Beihai to Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay, is the only tourist route by sea connecting the two countries.

More than 200 tourists returned to a port in south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region on Tuesday night after a five-day journey.

The past two years have been spent building docks for liners while

in port.

Initially, one liner will sail every four days, with more ships expected to be operational in the future. New routes to other Southeast Asian countries, such as Singapore and Malaysia, are also expected to open.

“Tourists had to choose land access to travel to Vietnam in the past. But the resumption of the sea route offers a new option,” said Ye Qiang, president of Beihai Guicheng International Travel Agency.

“The sea route is conducive to

promote cooperation between China and Vietnam, and inject impetus into bilateral tourism markets. I hope more sea routes will open in the future,” said Nguyen Cong Toan, a Vietnamese tour guide.

The China’s Beihai-Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay sea tourism route opened on April 30, 1998. It was the first transnational sea tourism line of China, with more than 500,000 tourists from home and abroad having traveled along the route. (PNA/ Xinhua)

Empowering villagers to protect wildlife Tropical storm ‘Soulik’

HUAPHAN PROVINCE — Families from 14 villages in the Nam Et-Phou Louey National Protected Area (NEPLNPA) have now signed a contract to participate in an ecotourism programme in northern Laos.

According to Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Lao PDR programme manager, Mr Paul Eshoo, the agreement was how villagers in Huameuang district of Huaphan province were encouraged to take part in conservation and ecotourism benefit-sharing.

“It’s not enough to only inform and educate the village leaders. We had to talk with each family to convince them to sign an agreement to show they understood and accepted the responsibility,” Mr. Eshoo told MindaNews.

The WCS has been involved in NEPL-NPA management since 2002 after the organization began its support for wildlife conservation in Laos in 1998, according to WCS Lao programme director Troy Hansel.

The World Bank began funding the WCS and NEPL-NPA since March this year. It planned to provide more funds for the Lao PDR in the next five years to step up the conservation program.

Hansel said the NEPL-NPA was an important location in northeast Laos as it was home to many species, including 21 types of carnivore, like the leopard.

“It’s very important for the ecosystem to remain intact,” he said.

The NPA covers a total area of 4,200 sq km over the provinces of Huaphan, Luang Prabang and Xieng Khuang, with 3,000 sq km totally protected.

The remaining 1,200 sq km may be used for sustainable agriculture, and includes 129 villages with nearly 55,000 residents.

Ecotourism development in the Nam Nern River area was allowed by the NEPL-NPA office, district administration and Son Khua village residents in 2009.

Mr. Eshoo said his organization held stakeholder meetings to discuss pertinent issues in nine target villages originally, and expanded to 14 villages in 2012.

Issues brought up with villagers included who the tourists would be and why they were interested in visiting the NEPL-NPA, the potential advantages and disadvantages of tourism, and the responsibilities of villages in hosting visitors and helping to protect tourist attractions.

“We held the meetings at night or in the early morning to encourage all villagers to attend,” he said. “The meetings were interactive with games, acting, pictures and question-and-answer sessions for the villagers. At the end

of each meeting, we asked villagers to express how they feel about tourism and if they want to participate.”

Benefit sharing Each village also attended sessions on benefit-sharing agreements from the Nam Nern programme.

Under the agreement, each village receives 6,250 kip for every tourist who visits, plus 150,000 kip per tiger sighting, 2,500 kip per sighting of a tiger track, Sambar deer, otter or wild feline species, and 1,250 kip per sighting of muntjac, civet, slow loris, porcupine or monitor lizard.

The agreement also stipulates if anyone from a village is caught violating the laws of the NPEL-NPA, such as selling or hunting wildlife or entering the core zone, then the amount for the village will be reduced by 25 or 50 percent for the first and second offense respectively.

“If a person from any stakeholder village is responsible for a national wildlife case (such as tiger hunting), the village will lose 100 percent of the village development fund benefits for one year,” the agreement says.

It adds that if a resident of the village where the case originates provides information to help find the perpetrator, the village will not lose its benefits.

“We asked people if they had any questions or problems with the agreement. Once they verbally agreed, we asked a member of each family to sign the contract,” Mr. Eshoo said.

He said the organization visits each of the 14 villages to have a meeting with every family to summarize the year’s tourist statistics, the benefits generated for the village development fund, and the amount of wildlife that tourists saw.

Since 2009, the Nam Nern Night Safari has taken 344 tourists on 128 tours, earning a total income of 276,764,000 kip.

Tours averaged about three wildlife sightings per trip.

Northeast Indian state under threat of flood, 100-T affected

NEW DELHI -- The northeast Indian state of Assam is threatened with serious flood, one month after the northern state of Uttarakhand was partially ravaged by water from an early monsoon season, said local officials Saturday.

The Brahmaputra river in northeast India and its tributaries are flowing above the danger level across Assam, affecting over 100,000, the Press Trust of India quoted officials as saying in the state capital Guwahati.

The Dhemaji district of the state has been worst-hit as incessant rainfall in the state’s upper reaches have raised the water level of the Brahmaputra throughout the

state. The flood has also hit the habitats of the one-horn rhinoceros at a national reserve park in upper Assam and a wildlife sanctuary in lower Assam, said the report.

Some roads and bridges have also been damaged while at least one embankment has been breached by water.

Authorities have set up five relief camps to provide relief materials and shelter to the affected people and those made homeless by flood.

expected to enter PHL Wednesday morning

MANILA -- A tropical storm (international name “Soulik”) could enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Wednesday morning, the state weather bureau said.

In its Twitter account, PAGASA said that as of 10 a.m. Monday, tropical storm Soulik was estimated at 2,140 km east of Basco, Batanes (19.1˚N, 145.1˚E), outside the eastern boundary of the PAR. PAGASA said that Soulik packs a maximum sustained winds of 65 kph with gustiness of up to 80 kph. It is forecast to move west at 20 kph.

The weather agency added that it is expected to enter the PAR on Wednesday morning and will not have any direct effect on any part of the country within the next two days.

However, Soulik will enhance the southwest monsoon and bring rains on the western part of the country by Thursday, PAGASA said.

Weather Forecaster Jori Loiz said that once the cyclone enters the PAR, it will be named “Huaning” – the first cyclone to visit the country this month and the eight for the year.

The state weather bureau expects two to three storms to affect the country this month. (PNA)

2 moderate quakes jolt Surigao Norte, GenSan MANILA -- Two moderate earthquakes rocked some parts of Mindanao on Monday morning, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

In its bulletin, the agency said the first quake with magnitude 3.7 occurred at 1:57 a.m. Monday.

Its epicenter was traced some 99 kilometers northeast of Burgos in Surigao del Norte, at a depth of around five kilometers.

The second quake happened around 2:16 a.m., a magnitude 3.9 rocking General Santos City with its epicenter located about 218 kilometers southeast at a depth of four kilometers.

Phivolcs said the two earthquakes were tectonic in origin.

The agency further noted that no damage or casualty was reported and aftershocks are not expected as well. (PNA)

3 dead, 1.9M affected in C China rainstorm WUHAN -- Heavy rains that started on Friday have left three people dead and affected lives of about 1.87 million residents in central China’s Hubei Province, local authorities said Sunday.

The provincial civil affairs department said the downpours have also forced the relocation of about 114,000 people in 29 counties.

More than 7,000 houses have been destroyed or damaged and 151,900 hectares of crops have been affected. Economic losses are estimated at about 684 million yuan (about 111.6 million U.S. dollars), according to the department.

The highest precipitation in the province reached 168 mm in 24 hours in Tuanfeng County, the department said.

The provincial government has distributed 3,000 quilts and blankets, 1,800 T-shirts and 50 folding beds to the worst-hit areas.

In addition, the Ministry of Civil Affairs has sent an expert team to supervise the rescue and relief work. (PNA/Xinhua)

Where? Staying for good in the Philippines? Mmmhhh....

My view, and not only mine, on safety and security has changed over the last 25 years. I did stay in more than 60 countries worldwide.

The rise of terrorism and natural disasters told me that there is no place on earth, which is entirely and absolutely safe.

I live in Davao now for good since more than 15 years. Congratulations to mayor-re-elect Rody Duterte and son Paolo as Vice. I am sure, Davao City remains (or will be again?) one of the most saved cities in the whole Philippines.

Foreign travel advisories, especially regarding the Philippines, and, especially again regarding Mindanao (including Davao City!?) are (sorry folks!) stupid and never well proven. Many friends of mine abroad are still planning to retire and move here, but they are becoming more and more

Kidnappings, insurgency, and lack of leadership and dependable police and military actions against burning problems and criminal elements are everywhere.

For me, I don’t care travel advisories, especially when it comes to Mindanao. I have been visiting many “dangerous” places in the whole world, like the “BlackPeople-Soveto” in Johannesburg in South Africa in 1980 during the Apartheid Regime.

I stayed on the Golan Heights and got to know some infamous parts of East Los Angeles, being the only

White among Blacks during a birthday party.

I came to Mindanao already 1982 and remember my stay in Cotabato 1989 while interviewing the thenmayor Mr. Badoy.

For sure, the Lord was and is always with me. I learned how to accept and respect other people and then, they did likewise.

Maybe, that’s the reason I never got problems to adjust in the Philippines as an expatriate.

Sad to say, media, especially from so-called “safe countries” still love to sensationalize the negative aspects in the Philippines.

More than a feeling

THINK a minute.

A little boy was asked what he thought about marriage.

He answered: “God says that a man should have only one wife. This is called monotony!”

That little boy, of course, meant to say “monogamy.”

But some adults think that being married to one wife or husband for the rest of their life is monotony and boring!

Possibly because we’ve listened to the love songs about the wonderful feeling of being in love.

So we start to actually believe that real love is just the feeling of being in love.

But loving a person is not just the feeling of being in love with them.

That may have been the beginning attraction and sparks that started the fire.

But feelings are not enough to keep the fire going and your marriage strong and satisfying, especially through the hard times!

You see, our moods and feelings change all the time.

So love is not a feeling; love is a choice!

It’s a choice you and I make with our heart, mind, and will.

Love is a decision that says: I choose you and only you, now and always, as

my friend and lover for the rest of my life. I’m not throwing you back in the sea and going fishing again for a new wife or husband.

I’ve caught my limit! I’m keeping you for good.

This is why Jesus Christ taught that a husband and wife become one person.

So when you divorce, it’s like cutting off half of your body.

It tears apart not only your life, but your children’s lives!

If we keep needing a new thrill, then our thrills will just get fewer and weaker, until we’ve become a sad, lonely old man or woman.

B ecause we never

decided to live and retire in the Philippines. And, they are happy here. Count me in!

Sensibility and awareness are always parts of our life.

Here and everywhere. One can feel safe and secure or feel unsafe and insecure.

Terrorism, civil wars, natural disasters... . Snatchers, killers, drug dealers - elements, who try to touch our lives can be find at any corner. Maybe no more in Davao City, as our good mayor Rody Duterte announced....

I am blue-eyed and a day dreamer. My dream is, that globally, governments and people build peace and unity by respecting all cultures and religions and work for equitable distributions of the world’s resources, and for more sustainable development that respects nature.

Living in a gated village or not - one can live a simple but meaningful life.

That is true, and statistics will show that airplanes remain to be the safest mode of transportation worldwide, the crashes notwithstanding. But then, nobody knows when a plane will crash, and where. As Filipinos are fond of saying, “only God knows” (or, “tanging Diyos lamang ang

nakakaalam”). This being the case, the wisest thing is to invoke God’s protection and deliverance from harm before taking the plane, or before doing anything else.

Indeed, it is no longer enough to simply say “take care” to anyone we hold dear, for no man can ever really take care of himself, especially in stressful and dangerous situations like a plane crash. The better thing to say is “may God take care of you”, with a raised hand towards your loved one. This is so because, in Acts 8:17 of the Bible, we can see that the Holy Spirit of God comes to the people upon whom we lay our hands on, in blessing.

Lanao Norte receives P5.8M farm equipment TUBOD, LANAO DEL NORTE - With its unwavering effort in attaining food security and sufficiency, the Department of Agriculture-10 (DA10) has turned-over P5.8 million worth of farm equipment in support to rice production to the provincial government of Lanao del Norte, during the Agri-Aqua, Livestock and One Town One Product (OTOP) Fair conducted in celebration of the 54th Founding Anniversary of the province.

The farm equipment which includes one unit of combine harvester, six units of shallow tube well, seven units of power tiller, 12 units of rice cutter and one unit of drilling rig is expected to benefit local farmers in the province.

Sarangani moves to contain bugs infesting coconut farms GENERAL Santos City–– Agriculture personnel in Sarangani Province have launched massive control measures to contain the continuing infestation of Brontispa longissima or coconut leaf beetle in coconut farms in four municipalities.

Jonathan Duhaylungsod, Sarangani agriculture officer, said the highlydestructive pest has been rapidly spreading in various coconut farms and so far affected 30 barangays in the province in the last several months.

have been devastated by the pest, he said.

He said the municipal agriculture office of Glan reported that the areas affected by the infestation were barangays Poblacion, Calabanit, Tapon, Ilaya, Glan Padidu, Madan, Tango, Lago, Taluya, Gumasa and Cablalan.

Last week, the local government declared the entire area under a state of calamity due to the damage wrought by the Brontispa infestation to its coconut industry, which comprises 90 percent of the local economy.

Glan, which was dubbed the “Coconut Queen of the South,” is one of the largest coconut producing towns in Region 12.

Aside from Glan, Duhaylungsod said the presence of the pest was also monitored recently in four more coastal villages in Alabel and Malapatan towns.

He said the Brontispa infestation was initially con-

firmed in coconut farms in several villages in Malungon town last year.

Duhaylungsod said they have adopted integrated control measures to in a bid to contain the pest and prevent it from further spreading in other coconut-producing areas in the province.

He said the initiative is supported by the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) and the Department of Agriculture Region 12’s Regional Crop Protection Center.

Brontispa, considered as one of the most damaging coconut pests, is a nocturnal insect that feeds on the young leaves of coconuts and other palm species.

A briefer issued by PCA cited that the larvae of Brontispa feeds on young leaves of coconut, leaving it scorched in a ragged appearance, while the adults leave chewing marks on the leaves.

“The damage that the

pest causes impairs the physiological activity of the leaves, which can lead to the death of the plants.

Coconuts that are 4-5 years old are most heavily attacked by this pest,” it said.

Duhaylungsod said they are presently implementing mechanical, chemical and biological methods to help contain the infestation.

The mechanical control method requires the cutting of the young coconut fronds infested by the beetle while biological control involves the mass propagation of earwigs, which is a biological predator of Brontispa, he said. Earwigs will be released on infested coconut trees to feed on brontispa as its prey, he explained.

He said the chemical control recommends the use of systematic insecticides through trunk injection.

“We’re also educating our farmers regarding the pest as well as its control and management measures.

We’ve been conducting short trainings through our farmer’s field school for the technology transfer,” Duhaylungsod said in an interview over TV Patrol Socsksargen.

The official said they are set to conduct “retooling” activities to improve the capability of the province’s “bantay-peste” teams.

Duhaylungsod said they have requested the release of an initial P100,000 for the purchase of chemicals or pesticides that will be used in the eradication drive against Brontispa.

Sarangani Gov. Steve Solon said the RCPC has allotted five sachets per week of entomopathogenic fungus, which helps eradicate the Brontispa.

abolish the Sangguniang Kabataan---not yet anyway. I also agree that remedial measures must instead be instituted to make the SK more responsive to the needs of the youth today, especially those who are undergoing the trauma of separated parents, for one reason or another.

The SK can be used as an effective forum to instill discipline, love of others, of country and of God, of moral and spiritual education among the youth, which their parents, teachers and their priests or pastors could no longer do, and to teach them practical, vocational, or technical knowhow that they can use in their everyday lives, or in earning decently.

This country needs a strong organization, like the SK, to do all these for the Filipino youth, who are now often the subject of elderly complaints, to the effect that they no longer respect their elders, they no longer have discipline, they have gone wayward, and strayed much too far away from God. The SK can be a forum whereby the Filipino youth are once again trained in the way that they should go, according to godly and spiritual values that can make this nation truly great again!

Corn was the second highest producing major cereal commodity in the province, with nine percent contribution to the total production of cereals for food and feed grains.

Last year’s corn harvest was 6,793.68 MT covering an area of 3,267.00 hectares.

Production output of soybeans was at 471.00 metric tons, with an average yield of 1.98 metric tons per hectare out of 238.00 hectares planted areas in the municipalities of San Miguel and Tago.

Considered as the country’s best and Caraga Region’s champion in quality and production, soybeans gained potential as a promising industry in Surigao del Sur where portion of funds from the Department of Agriculture (DA-13) had been tapped to improve the sector, through provision of seeds, post-harvest facilities and extension.

Investment for soybean cultivators last year was P0.68 million.

Pimentel further said DA13 has allocated funds for agricultural enhancement program being its top priority.

Records show that last year, the province has produced 121,269 metric tons of harvested palay from 33,859 hectares, compared to the 32,501 hectares utilized for rice production in CY 2011.

Last year’s rice production resulted in an average yield increase of 3.73 metric tons per hectare.

Such results showed a visible intervention to further increase productivity of rice in the province, with San Miguel town posting the highest yield with 26,366 metric tons; Tago 17,355.00 MTs; and Cantilan 14,725.00 MTs.
