MannyVillar graces church blessing at Gran Europa

Villar Foundation Chairman and former senator Manny Villar graces the blessing and inauguration of the San Vicente Ferrer Church located at Gran Europa, Lumbia, Cagayan de Oro City on July 13, 2013.

The church is built on a 308.55sq.m. lot and seats 250 people.

San Vicente Ferrer Church was designed

by Architect Arthuro Secuya, who schemed it so it went with Gran Europa’s European theme.

According to Senator Villar, this chapel

is only the 4th out of 12 future projects of the Villar Foundation to build churches in their respective subdivisions all over the Philippines.

Also according to Senator Villar, the chapel was planned in a way that it would still expand, that there was still room for the expansion of San Vicente Ferrer church.

he Capitol University Alumni Association, Inc. (CUAA) will have its first ever “CU Alumni Run 2013”, today, July 14, 2013, Sunday, 4:30am expecting more than 2,000 runners from its alumni members, friends, faculty and staff, students, sponsors and participants from the general public.

3K route is from Capitol University (CU) to Lapasan Flyover and back to CU; 5K is from CU to Capitol University Medical City (CUMC) and back to CU and; 10K is from CU to Mandaue Foam and back to CU.

The primary objective of the run is to raise funds for the CUAA projects such as Medical and Dental Missions, Tree Planting and Growing I nitiatives, Blood Let ting Campaigns, Operation Tuli, Job Fair, Home Building Activities and various assistance activities to alumni members.

“Apart from raising funds, we believed that run activities like this promotes health, fitness and camaraderie among runners”, alumni board member and race director Lulani Grace “Lani” Deleste said.

The run, first of its kind since the Alumni Association was es tablis hed 1982 is

fully supported by Capitol U niversit y and Capitol University Medical City.

The Quintessential Kagay-anon Carenderia

Every city worth its salt prides itself with a place where one can have a heavenly meal for an earthly price.

These are most often carenderias (or carinderia, if you must), small hole-in-the-wall food stalls selling simple meals for the man-on-the-street.

Z.C. Eatery along Pabayo Street is Cagayan de Oro’s garbo (pride) for such a place. Set up by the late Zita “Z.C.” Cosare-Vequilla at the ground floor of her mother Victoria Mabalos’ residence in 1988, it’s a simple, no-frills carenderia you can hardly tell apart from the row of sari-sari stores and a tailoring shop which keeps it company in relative anonymity.

“I stared by just selling viands for my neighbors, but soon my customers began asking me to put up a table where they could eat the foods fresh and hot, so I put up a table with some benches and soon we already occupied the entire ground floor of my mother’s house,” Manang Zita told the author in a 2007 interview.

It’s a place the high and mighty have no qualms coming to for a first hand culinary nirvana of Manang Zita’s simple fare. “One time, then Misamis Oriental Gov. Oscar Moreno (now Cagayan de Oro City Mayor) brought along Bukidnon Rep. Migz Zubiri and Lanao del Sur Rep. Benasing Macarambon,” recalled the owner-cook with a smile.

“We’ve also had other celebrities come here like PBA commentator Ed Picson, pro basketball stars Nelson Asaytono and Gilbert Demape, the late comedian Yoyoy Villame and his colleague Max Surban, and ABS-CBN reporter Paul Henson, to name a few.”

Manang Zita’s menu is as simple as it is savory: paksiw (or inun-on in Bisaya) na isda (with no more than 18 pieces of fish a day cooked), two vegetable dishes (rotated daily, today it’s kamote salad and ginataang nangka), humba, kinilaw, sinugba, nilagang baka and tinolang lauya are available daily from Monday to Saturday. An additional special dish (spicy chicken curry for today) reinforces the standard menu, but that’s it.

The household is up early around two o’clock dawn to be able to catch the choice vegetables which are delivered to the Cogon public market around this time. Cooking starts around three a.m. and sukis (patrons) are already inside having early morning sup of scalding hot tinola.

“We have many who have had one drink too many and believe our hot tinola can make them sober,” Manang Zita said. “Even if our store is still closed, they know they can come in for a bowl of hot tinola if they knock.”

Business picks up around ten o’clock when people from all economic strata start coming in droves, many of them taking home their favorite dishes in cellophane bags that’s the staple of carenderias all over the country. But an almost equal number make themselves at home in one of the eatery’s nine formica topped tables and wooden benches.

“I often take out tinola la-uya with fish heads when I’m in a hurry,” said businessman Joe Epon as he greets Manang Zita on his way out. “But nothing beats sipping it hot, straight from the pot, it’s almost like taking a meal at home.”

DXIF Bombo Radyo personality Michael “M.I.B.” Bustamante, who frequents the place along with his media colleagues, concurs. “My favorite is the tinola lau-ya with fish heads and ‘halang-halang manok’ (spicy chicken) which are really delicious because its ‘inato gyud‘ (a Bisayan expression which roughly translates to ‘our very own’ or home cooking),” Mr. Bustamante said enthusiasm.

“Yeah, I remember that small carinderia. When I picked up my kids from school on my dilapidated motorcycle, I passed by the place because I found the food fresh, warm and clean and the taste terrific.

My family had a feast everyday with the foods from that place. The owner was there all the time smiling and very accommodating. I wish I could visit the place and eat once more the sampayna, lauyang baka and adobo.”

Manang Zita passed away in Davao City August 15, 2009 at the age of 64. Her sisters Teofila and Isidra have opened competing stores along Pabayo street which continue the culinary legacy of Z.C. Eatery.

KUMBIRA, the longest running culinary show in the Philippines will once again take place on August 14, 15 and 16 at the Limketkai Mall Atrium. Foodies, hotel apprentices, HRM students, and chefs will get together for 3 days to learn, compete, and simply enjoy the displays and exhibitions.

DOST 10 reminds public to visit NOAH website for weather update

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) region 10 through the Philippine Information Agency’s ‘Talakayan sa PIA’ on Monday, reminded the public to visit the NOAH website www.noah.dost. gov.ph to get comprehensive weather update.

Nationwide Operational Assessment of Hazards or Project NOAH is the DOST’s response to the call of President Benigno S. Aquino III for a more accurate, integrated, and responsive disaster prevention and mitigation system, especially in high-risk areas throughout the Philippines.

In the region, director Alfonso Alamban cited that DOST has already installed automated rain gauges and automatic water level sensors in major river systems in Iligan, Cagayan de Oro, Tagoloan, Gingoog and Bukidnon as part of project NOAH. These instruments will help determine the strength of the rain and transmits reading on the water level of these river basins, added director Alamban.

Further, these data are then fed into the NOAH website, which will be shared with local government units specifically the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (LDRRMC) as baseline for implementing safety procedures in their respective barangays.

Reduction Management Council (RDRRMC-10) here is tasked to make sure that warnings and advisories for incoming typhoons or floods are disseminated for public information through NOAH website, texts and other social media.

According to Director Alamban, they can provide warnings and advisories approximately five days to six hours prior to any typhoon or flooding here in the region.

This process includes information from satellite readings specifically coming from the pacific ocean five days prior any typhoon, in three to four days, doppler radar will then provide data on how intense the typhoon will be; in two to three days, the rain gauge will then tell the intensity of the rain and lastly six hours before reaching the area, the water level sensor will determine if rivers will be flooding. This time they can tell if residents near river beds will need to get out or relocate on higher grounds.

He also cited that this was also the preparation during the typhoon ‘Pablo’ last year that is why there were no casualties in the city and the region.

According to Ana Cañeda, director of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD-10) and chairperson of the RDRRMC-10 that response starts in the dissemination of warnings and advisories to prevent casualties and damages. She added that one life lost is priceless.

Out of curiosity, I recently clicked a Youtube post from one of my Facebook friends about the song entry of Joey Ayala for the Philippine Popular Music Festival 2013 entitled "Papel." The song written by Ayala also features Pinoy Rap Artist Gloc 9, Denise Barbacenas and Silver Filter.

Upon hearing the lyrics, I cannot help but smile of how witty the song is and its emphasis on our "papel" or role in society as well as how we are all dictated by pieces of "papel" that matters.

The melody and beat is undoubtedly infectious.

The song's plus apart from the creative wordplay is a taste of Gloc 9's magic in spilling out the rap verses that added to the pop appeal of the song entry.

Aside from the obvious and literal, the word "papel" connotes so many

things to the Filipinos and it could either mean a good or a bad thing depending on who is judging who.

If a person sees good intentions then he is just doing his role or "papel sa buhay" but when one smells something fishy, they might utter "ay,pumapapel!"

We hear this often in politics,in office settings, in classrooms and even in relationships with family or friends.

People either dictate or we simply stamp our places in society and whichever way, people will view us based on their interpretations of our intentions.

During the recent election season, we often see eager "minions" wanting to please those who run into office hoping that if their bets win, they will have a place in their governance.

They sometimes look pathetic and oftentimes acting like lapdogs who

are more than willing to obey their "master's" every beck and call.

You can still see some of them milling about and putting their weight around hoping that people will see them as important as their political lord.

These are the EPAL types.

Do you know of one? I bet you do.

On the work front, this "Taong Mapapel" either acts as if he or she has her hands of full of work but ends up doing nothing but crap.

They can also be the tattletale that only knows ill about others and never a day passes without a whine, a complaint and a gossip spread like gourmet cheese.

I too am pretty sure, the description is somehow familiar, yes these types exist unlike the Tooth Fairy but we will not tell, won't we?

As my former professor in PolSci told us, we all struggle for power

and we want to satisfy our need to feel important, if not to the world but even for just one person.

That is why like what Joey Ayala's song wants to impart, we do what we do in order to gain recognition, affirmation and appreciation.

We study hard so we can earn a "Diplomang Papel" , we fight for our love so we can seal the relationship in a "Contratang Papel" and we report to work in order to get our "Checkeng Papel" or "Paper Bills" and end up spending everything on "Bills written on paper."

I just hope that whatever is our "papel" in life, we will always bear in mind that whatever we do affects others too.

Every action results in a chain of other actions and reactions.

We might as well do good in our varied roles in society in order not to feel like poo in a "Tissue Paper."

Music Equipping Online After finishing my college degree Five years ago, my music mentor somehow encouraged me to go for a music degree.

Yes I did consider it but after finishing my first course in Six years due to “shifting” it was really awkward to ask for financial assistance from my parents and brother to finish another course.

I accepted the fact that schooling was over and it’s time to work.

My transition from college to the real world was not easy to find a good job and finding the right one is as hard as getting into the right course to study.

It almost took me Two years for that transition until teaching became an option when all other doors were closed and the only opened window was to teach others how to sing.

I was hesitant at first but I gave it my best shot and that best shot lasted even until today.

When I learned how to write scripts for movies the very thing that I always remember is that I can only write what I know so as with teaching I can only teach what I know.

I just thank God that when I had music training back then I was serious enough to absorb the learning.

My mentor said the best way to test your learning is when you can teach it to others and see them apply on their own.

True enough today it has been a continuous test of my learning. What a great joy it is when I see them apply the lessons I shared to them and see improvements according to their own pace.

As I see my students grow with me, my desire to learn more in music has also grown.

As much as I want to go back to a regular school, but with the circumstances I am in it is not just possible.

It is really different now when we have financial responsibilities but then as the saying goes “if there’s a will there’s a way”.

I have the will to learn so there should be a way to learn.

Again I prayed since last year for an online music school. I found several ones but it was just too expensive so I just laid it aside and kept on praying until recently I found the right online music course for me.

A New Zealand based online music school, they offer from the very basics of music theory to the advance level.

Self paced and price is just right for one year.

I just got enrolled few days back and I’m excited to explore this new type of studying starting next week.

For those of you out there who are already studying music in a regular school, finish what you have started because that opportunity to study will not be there forever and you are very privileged to have that.

Get the most out of it because it will surely affect the quality of musician you will become someday.

Many cities around the world are making data of their cities available to its city dwellers or citizens.

In Chicago and New York the local governments don’t know what to do with the gargantuan data gathered them other than to turn them over to its people for nerds to make sense out of them – and it’s working!

After all it is the people who own the city and not necessarily government.

Multiple data is sourced by government and most times they are rendered useless.

For example information on road repairs (progress reports/ dates and locations), appropriated budgets, time tables and even complaints.

Statistics are automatically gathered and compiled and computerized.

Then there are the infrastructures all over the city if not under-repair which the city is building or those in progress that may cause inconveniences.

There is of course the weather bureau, traffic management (if not control if any at all), the police and its statistics, health and outbreaks, hospitals and its data on patients for breaking news deceases.

Services all over the city such like social security, advances, loans or licenses and whatever are gathered, recorded and regulated.

There is so much data the government gathers on behalf of its citizens and the people’s monies but is kept in secrecy. Why the secret? Why in the Philippines?

There are issues of confidentiality when it comes to threats to the city of course and data should be withheld but not all data is sensitive to national security surely.

There is also the banking information which to date I understand we still enjoy with a sense of secrecy (but maybe not since Justice Corona himself was not sparred), etc.

Then there is the issue of whether all this information is linked to a common date source which I understand is not.

Even government to date is not linked to each other and it is already 2013 with multiple advanced computers and software. For some reason the platforms are not configurable (which is idiotic to begin with) or simply inaccessible.

The question is; is information withheld because of incompetence in data gathering and dissemination, or with the intent to withhold data from the people for personal gain and mischief or is it the for the people to stay ignorant knowing information is vital for any communication and study? Whichever it is - is a puzzle for sure.

Somehow people who feel they have accelerated into government positions acquire the decease called swell-headedness and the “super-authoritative-acquiredcompetence”.

A syndrome worse than cancer that is life threatening.

Regardless of the decease the problems arises when incompetence is coupled with the territories now under their authority.

Let us take for example the MMDA and its mandate to govern the many cities in the NCR (17 of last count).

They are in charge of traffic (which they deliver with consistency), governance of any activity be it for road paving, repairs or de-clogging of waterways etc.

It seems obvious the performance is way below par and worst of all aggravating to the commuting public.

And yet the department continues to exist costing taxpayers a lump in its coffers.

There is also the pension funds of the state that are lost or bankrupt to corruption if not incompetent management.

This goes for the military as well (but in this case with real intent to deceive, and only to get away with mischief accorded the courts).

On issues of information and communication we in the country have not yet reached a maturity many around the world are now taking advantage of. And reasons for this is incompetence!

We are all time traders. Of all assets that we have at our disposal, time is our single most important resource.

The value of a resource is often defined by its supply and demand profile.

Local gov’t execs vow to make CDO climate-resilient

NOTING the threats the city is facing from a changing climate, local government executives yesterday vowed to pursue “green” policies and programs that will make a climate-resilient Cagayan de Oro. Local government officials, led by Mayor Oscar Moreno, however, admitted they don’t have the expertise needed to make this “ambitious” program a reality, thus, they need the

help of all sectors, especially civil society organizations (CSOs) and non-government organizations (NGOs) that are championing climate change mitigation and adaptation, and disaster risk reduction programs.

“Programs on disaster mitigation must go together with programs that will make our communities resilient to the impacts of climate change and environmental degradation,”

said Rep. Rolando “Klarex” Uy (1st District, LP).

Uy said he is willing to learn how he can best help his constituents in the first legislative district, especially his own Barangay Carmen — w h e re h e s e r ved a s long-time chairman before becoming congressman — become disaster resilient since many parts of the district are very vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and environmental degradation.

He said Tropical Storm

Washi (Sendong) was “a great learning experience” for him, which “made me more eager to run [for congressman] because I don’t want to bring my people suffering and serving the people is my passion.”

He said his main legislative agenda in Congress is to ensure that NGOs, NGAs (non-government agencies) and institutions that have the expertise in climate change adaptation, mitigation and building resilient communities are supported by government to pursue their programs for the good of everyone.

Uy stressed that Cagayan de Oro can no longer afford a repeat of Sendong and Pablo, which devastated the city on December 16, 2011 a nd Dec ember 4, 2012, respectively.

He said he will work with Barangay Carmen’s partner non-government organization (NGO) in the implementation of CCA/DRR programs, especially in making the first district communities disaster-resilient.

Rep. Rufus Rodriguez (2nd District, CDP), who is known as a “green” legislator for his work of c hampioning local environmental issues, said that integrating disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation in the city’s development plan and decision-making processes/ policies has now become an

imperative.

“We will make sure that disaster risk reduction/climate change adaptation policies and programs are integrated into the city’s development plan. This is the only way we can ensure the city’s continued growth and development,” he said.

Rodriguez noted various scientific studies that show that Cagayan de Oro is under constant threat from sea-level rise, flashfloods and other impacts from climate change due to its location and advance degradation of its environment, especially in the hinterlands.

Like his counterpart in the first legislative district, he urged the participation of every sector of the Cagayan de Oro society to ensure t h a t t h e e nv iro n m e n t i s adequately protected from further damage.

“Kagay-anons should also realized that they have a vital role to play in ensuring that the city become climate change-impact resilient like not throwing their garbage anywhere and follow the law on proper waste segregation,” he said.

For his part, Moreno said he will continue in the city what he started in the province es pe c ially i n prote c ti n g Cagayan de Oro from climateinduced natural disasters and calamities.

M ore n o said t hat h is administration will make sure that the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) will be functional and that the 20 percent Disaster Risk Reduction Fu nd will be invested in projects that will increased the resiliency of disastervulnerable communities, like those along the Cagayan de Oro River.

U n d e r t h e P h i l i ppi n e Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010 (RA 10121) local government units can spend up to 70% of the 20% DRR Fund for projects that increase the capacity of communities to respond to calamities. Only 30% of the DRR Fund is reserved for disaster response. “ Let’s enforce all environmental laws. This is for our own good, the good of our beloved city.”

Almost three years since Vice President Binay assumed leadership at Pag-IBIG in the latter part of 2010, Pag-IBIG has grown in terms of membership and assets, and has increased its benefits for its members, the Filipino workers worldwide.

Membership has grown from 8.8 million at the start of 2011 to the current 12.6 million worldwide. The P320-billion housing agency continues to increase the dividends it credits to its members at the end of each year. In 2012, it posted the highest dividend amount ever, at P9.28 billion, which is P0.79 billion more than the one given out in 2011. The Fund’s net income also increased from 2011’s P11.96 billion to 2012’s P13.26 billion. Recent months saw the reduction of PagIBIG’s calamity loan interest rate from 10.75% to 5.95%. Its Affordable Housing Loan Program boasts of a 4.5% interest rate, the lowest in Pag-IBIG history. The maximum housing loan amount also doubled from the previous P3 million to the current P6 million, with loan terms still as long as 30 years.

‘Hapsay’ fun run all set for August

Cagayan de Oro City – The Kagayhaan Canine Club and Circle Productions, Inc. set the first ever Mayor Oca Moreno Fun Run to kick-off the August festivities.

The fun run, aptly dubbed as “Dagan sa Kahapsay Kagay-an”, is all set for August 4, at the Kiosko Kagawasan, Divisoria, this city.

The 1st Mayor Oca Moreno Fun Run is initiated by the officers and members of the Kagayhaan Canine Club (KCC) in their desire to help the new city administration’s thrust for change.

According to Edgardo Palad, president of KCC, they asked themselves “what can we do to help Mayor Oca Moreno and the new city administration bring about the much needed, desired, long overdue and prayed for ‘kahapsay’ to our beloved city”. The question springs into action the conceptualization of the “Dagan sa Kahapsay Kagay-an” fun run.

KCC Project Chairman, Kenneth Tan, says that the club’s mission as a group of dog-lovers is to promote the proper care and well-being of our canine friends.

Furthermore, Tan says that proceeds will be used for “the establishment and maintenance of the city’s dog pound service and canine vaccination”.

Tan disclosed that the original plan was a fun run together with their pet dogs, but after a series of consultations, Circle Productions ruled out the possibility as this may agitate the dogs during the actual run and might discourage other runners.

Tan also said that if time and weather would permit, they will just have a short ceremonial walk or run within the Divisoria area before the actual runs.

City Veterinarian Dr. Perla D. Asis said that the state and condition of the city dog pound service is currently at its worst and there is no physical dog

pound. “In the past two years, there was no operation in impounding of stray dogs” Dr. Asis further states.

Dr. Asis welcomes the initiatives of the Kagayhaan Canine Club with this fun run to raise awareness in animal rights, protection, and well-being of dogs.

Dr. Asis also states that they welcome all types of dogs, not only purebreds in their office and that owners should not hesitate to bring their dogs for checkups or vaccinations, or call them for any inquiries.

The race categories are 10k, 5k, and 3k runs with gun starts at 5:30am, 5:45am, and 6:00am respectively.

Jeffrey Ang also introduced the registration fees as follows, PHP 500 for the 10k, PHP 400 for the 5k and PHP 300 for the 3k runs – all are inclusive of race bibs and t-shirts.

Former Finance Secretary Roberto de Ocampo is new PVB Chair Former Finance Secretary Roberto or “Bobby” F. de Ocampo, OBE has been elected as Chairman by the Philippine Veterans Bank (PVB) Board of Directors.

As the new Chair, De Ocampo said his term marks a fresh new beginning for PVB, with the aim of revitalizing the medium-sized commercial bank to be an active major player in the banking industry, not just locally but globally as well.

A respected name in the business community, Bobby De Ocampo brings with him an exceptional track record in both the business and finance arenas here and abroad.

Aside from being the former Secretary of Finance, he was also President of the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) and also the Chairman & CEO of the Development Bank of the Philippines.

He is one of the most internationally recognized Filipinos having been Chairman of the APEC and ASEAN Finance Ministers, and a Governor of the World Bank, IMF and ADB.

He is also presently the Chairman of the Board of Advisers of the RFO Center for Public Finance & Regional Economic Cooperation, an ADB Regional Knowledge Hub. During his stint as Finance Secretary, De Ocampo was credited for bringing the country’s fiscal position from large deficits to surplus and brought about the longest period of consecutive years of fiscal surpluses in the Philippines.

It was during also his term that the key features of country’s investment liberalization and privatization strategies were designed and implemented.

As Finance Secretary, he was awarded the Global Finance Minister of the Year in 1995 by Euromoney and Asian Finance Minister of the Year in 1996 and 1997 by Euromoney and Asiamoney respectively.

De Ocampo was also the youngest DBP Chairman & CEO. It was during his leadership that DBP was adjudged to be the World’s Second Soundest and Third Best Performing Bank in 1991 by The Banker.

De Ocampo also has the distinction of being the only Filipino knighted by both the United Kingdom & France.

He was conferred “Most Excellent Order of the British Empire” or OBE by the Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2012 for his efforts in promoting Philippine-UK relations during his years as a public servant and as Chairman of the British Alumni Association.

He was also named Chevalier in the French Legion of Honor by the Republic of France for his promotion of links between France and the Philippines in the economic domain.

As a son of a Filipino World War II veteran, Bobby de Ocampo’s election as PVB Chairman was hailed by the Veterans sector, particularly the Veterans Federation of the Philippines.

HELPING PROTECT OUR COASTAL RESOURCES: Employees of energy-firm STEAG State Power Inc. (SPI) participate in a mangrove replanting and coastal clean-up drive in Brgy. Silad, Sugbongcon, Misamis Oriental. The activity is part of the company’s employee volunteerism activity and in support of its comprehensive environmental conservation programs. Over the years, Steag have been providing material and funding support for the development and rehabilitation of about 16.4 hectares of mangrove areas in the province. The projects have been implemented in partnership with the concerned municipal LGUs and the provincial government of Misamis Oriental. More than 66,000 propagules have been grown so far in the municipal coasts Sugbongcogon, Villanueva, Balingasag, Gitagum and the cities of El Salvador and Gingoog.

Mushrooms are used as food as well as medicine since time immemorial.

They were used as food even before man understood the use of other organisms. Unfortunately, production technology on mushroom growing still remains wanting in several Asian countries. The presentation deals with the principles and practices of edible and medicinal mushroom cultivations.

It stresses successful cultivation involving the interaction of scientific knowledge and practical experience. The requirements essential to successful cultivation involve: selection of mushroom spores/strains, maintenance of mycelial cultures, development of spawn or inoculums, preparation of growing medium, inoculation and colonization, and crop management for optimum production. Mushroom science is the discipline that is concern with the principles and practices of mushroom cultivation.

Mushrooms used to be classified into the Kingdom Plantae, but now they belong to the Kingdom Fungi due to unique fungal characteristics which draw a clear line from animals or plants. Unlike green plants, mushrooms are heterotrophs.

Not having chlorophyll, they cannot generate nutrients by photosynthesis, but take nutrients from outer sources.

There are three factors involving mushroom cultivation namely spawn which is like a seed to a crop, substrate that is a nutritional source of carbon, nitrogen and inorganic compounds and lastly, Environment, which is the most important factor and by maintaining optimal conditions at each growing stage and for each species, growers can produce the desired yield of quality mushrooms.

Mushroom cultivation has been evaluated as an effective means for poverty alleviation means in developing countries due to its possibility of low cost production, high profit and quick return.

Mushrooms can be grown anywhere as long as conditions for their growth and cultivation are provided. Today, Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) through the implementation of Center for O verseas in Agriculture and International Development with a partnership with the Department of Agriculture Region Field Unit 10 (DA-RFU10) and Misamis Oriental State College of Agriculture and Technology (MOSCAT) have been working on a project “A technology transfer project of Microbial/Organic Fertilizer and Mushroom Cultivation in Claveria, Misamis Oriental” with a purpose of helping the Filipinos residing in the said Municipality.

A tragedy that is never to be forgotten by the citizens of Cagayan de Oro City, whether you’re rich or poor, affected or non-affected.

As a city that was once known to be less likely susceptible to natural disasters was struck by such and so quickly and suddenly too, where the sleeping giant that is the Cagayan de Oro River engorges and consumes whatever is in its path.

We will never forget the name “Sendong”, a name that would give us a chilling reminder of that fateful December night where families climbed on roofs or trees and held onto anything to save their lives. The devastation was unimaginable.

Thousands of lives were taken, statuses of some others were unsure as they were proclaimed “missing” for several days, infrastructures and buildings suffered massive amounts of damage, livelihood and businesses went through financial difficulty, and houses, even two barangays were washed away completely.

But it’s because of this tragedy where we saw the beauty of a community, how Cagayan de Oro and other places in the Philippines and even the world reached out to help those who have lived to tell their tale of their fight against nature.

Relief operations commenced here and there, donations came from all over the world, and people

admits that she is earning more in Ecoville than there.

She’s proud to say that her livelihood has improved since she and her family has moved into Xavier Ecoville.

So where are the survivors now? Well there are many relocation sites around the city, but one rather popular relocation site would have to be Xavier Ecoville which is located at Zone 3, Lumbia. As of February 1, 2013 Xavier Ecoville has a total number of 517 households, and 2,586 total numbers of individuals.

Imagine what strength this woman has, carrying a child in her womb while having to fight to keep her and her family alive.

On top of that, the company donated P500,000.00 plus the voluntary c o n t r i b u t i o n o f i t s e m p l oye e s amou nting to P40,0 0 0.0 0 for a total of P540,000.00 cash donation in order to provide relief assistance such as food, medicines and basic necessities to the typhoon-hit areas of Mindanao.
