CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY - Looking into this city’s future, Rotarians who have gathered to celebrate its 65th anniversary, were equally elated that their invited guest speaker, no less than the incoming city mayor Oscar Moreno, spoke of the same aspirations that they are envisioning for Cagayan de Oro.

Overseas Kagay-anon Hail Moreno victory Call for Citizens Council, restoration of Du-aw Park

Kagay-anons based in the United States have hailed the victory of outgoing Misamis Oriental Gov. Oscar S. Moreno as Cagayan de Oro’s New Mayor and have called for the creation of a new “Citizens Council” and the restoration of Duaw Park.

In an email from the US, three overseas Kagay-anon groups represented by Roy C. Gaane, emailed the following congratulatory letter: “KAGAY-ANON INTERNATIONAL, KAGAY-ANONS OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, and MINDANAO ALLIANCE – U.S.A. extend their heartfelt and sincerest congratulations to Mayor OSCAR S. MORENO, Congressman RUFUS B. RODRIGUEZ and Congressman ROLANDO A. Restoration of Duaw Park After the dismantling of the Philippine Marital Law, 120 Kagayanons from the U.S. and Canada made a historic home-bound journey to Cagayan de Oro after years of self-exile in August 1987. The event was called DUAW sa KAGAY-AN. “Then Mayor Ambing Magtajas proposed that the side of the old tennis court by the river bank across the City Hall be created as DUAW PARK. We were there during the dedication and I had the honor of cutting the ribbon for the opening ceremony. Within a year, walkways were paved and the park was turned into a beautiful garden with benches,” Gaane said.

However, when Magtajas was no longer the mayor, Duaw Park was neglected. Then Mayor Constantino Jaraula promised to restore Duaw Park but was never able to do it. When Emano became the mayor for the last time, the Duaw park monument was removed and the whole place was destroyed.

(AMRECO) held the Mindanao Congress of the Advocates for Renewable Energy and Rural Electrification and DevelopmentMinCARED 2013 to achieve a sustained visible platform for sustainable energy development on May 27, here.

With the theme, “Mainstreaming the Mindanao Power Agenda: Reliable, Affordable and Sustainable Power Supply in Mindanao,” AMRECO is in partnership with the Mindanao University of Science and Technology (MUST), Institute of Power Sector Economics (IPSec), and Mindanao Development Authority (MINDA) in seeking solutions on the challenges of meeting demands for Mindanao’s power in the future.

According to Dir. Romeo Montenegro, MINDA Investment Relations and Public Affairs Officer, the congress’ advocacy focuses on bracing diversity with emphasis

on renewable energy such as wind, biomass, fuel cell system, solar energy and hydroelectric energy.

Dagooc also added that with the help of their partners, they will be able to come up with good solutions on the power crisis in Mindanao and they

will try to “beat out ahead of our requirement.”

SSS educational assistance loan program made easier

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -Active Social Security System (SSS) members can now avail of the educational assistance loan program through easier application process and with higher loanable amount.

There is no distinction whether an SSS member is employed or self-employed to avail this loan, said Lawyer Edwin Halo, branc h head of SSS Cagayan de Oro. If the member is active and is regularly paying his monthly contribution, then he or she may avail.

Nationwide, there are already 17,000 SSS members who availed of such loan, Atty. Halo revealed.

The maximum loanable amount per semester or trimester is P20,000 for college degrees and P10,000 for those vocational and technical courses.

Atty. Halo also said that they grant these loans to SSS members in the condition that the schools and universities they intend to be enrolled or want their beneficiary enrolled are accredited by the Commission

on Higher Education (CHED) and vocational schools which a r e a c c r e d i t e d a l s o by Technical Educational Skills and Development Authority (TESDA).

Also, we will need the assessment of the school to gauge how muc h loan we can grant for a member, he added.

An active SSS member may avail said loan if he or she has a monthly income of not more than P25,000 and he or she has 12 posted monthly contributions provided that one contribution is paid within three months prior to the loan

application. If there were no contribution made in the past three months, a member can pay immediately and show proof of payment.

For those married SSS members, these two couples may avail to up to two beneficiaries each: who can be an SSS member, legal wife/husband of the SSS member and child including illegitimate.

This loan program started second semester of last year (2012) nationwide to help students from low-income families to pay for tuition and miscellaneous fees.

SSS Cagayan de Oro to open on Saturdays of June for ‘kasambahay’ registration CAGAYAN DE ORO - Social Security System (SSS) branches nationwide will open for business on four consecutive Saturdays in June to enable household employers and domestic workers or ‘kasambahay’, such as maids, nursemaids or yaya, gardeners, cooks and laundry women, to register with SSS. SSS Cagayan de Oro branch will be opened to issue social security (SS) numbers for domestic workers as well as household employer ID numbers on June 8, 15, 22 and 29 to facilitate their mandatory SSS membership as provided under the Kasambahay Law and the Social Security Law, said Lawyer Edwin Halo, SSS branch manager.

The Kasambahay Law, or Republic Act No. 10361, was signed into law on January 19, 2013 to ensure the social protection of household employees under various government agencies, which include the SSS, Philippine Health Insurance Corporation and Pag-IBIG Fund.

To get an SS number, domestic workers, including family drivers who are considered household employees under the SSS charter, must fill out and submit the Personal Record Form (SSS Form E-1) to any SSS branch, along with a photocopy of any of the primary documents such as the birth or baptismal certificate, driver’s license, passport, Professional Regulation Commission card or seaman’s book.

Those without any primary document can give two secondary documents, both citing their name and at least one indicating their birthdate.

SSS branches provide a comprehensive list of accepted secondary documents such as the ATM card, bank passbook, marriage contract, NBI or police clearance, voter’s ID or postal ID card.

“Only the Form E-1 and a photocopy of the supporting documents need to be submitted, but they should present to us the original copy for authentication purposes,” Atty. Halo said.

“Without the documents, they will be issued a number that may be used for paying contributions and reporting for SSS coverage but not for availment of benefits and loans. They will attain permanent SSS membership status upon submission of these required documents.”

To secure a Household Employer ID Number, the employer only needs to fill out and submit the Employer Registration Form (SSS Form R-1).

Existing household employers who still use their personal SS numbers in paying the contributions of their domestic workers will be given their Household Employer ID Number during their branch visit, via email or mail.

Household employers reporting workers for SSS coverage must submit the Employment Report Form (SSS Form R1-A), the Specimen Signature Card (SSS Form L-501), and the SSS Form E-1 of household employees with no prior SSS coverage.

Further, the domestic worker’s effective date of coverage, which is the same as the date of employment, marks the start of the respective household employer’s obligation to remit monthly contributions for the household employee.

“If the effective date of coverage is earlier than the date of registration, the household employer must submit a ‘Statement of Monthly Salaries’ received by the domestic worker starting from the date of employment indicated in the SSS Form R1-A,” he said. “This will be the basis for the computation of the accruing contributions that the household employer has to settle.”

Apart from registration services, SSS offices with branch tellering facilities will also accept contribution payments of household employers during the four selected Saturdays.

Successful test of Centrist Democratic Party in 2013 Local Elections

GINGOOG CITY, Misamis Oriental -- Gingoog City is a famous second-class city in the province of Misamis Oriental that is endowed with great bounties of nature and numerous tourist spots.

The city’s name is derived from a Manobo word which means “good luck,” thus implying good fortune. With a total area of 744 sq km, Gingoog has around 112,000 people based on the 2007 Philippine Census.

Audie Ocampo, city tourism officer, said Gingoog was founded by Spanish missionaries in 1750 and has become the oldest city in the province since.

Among the breathtaking spots in Gingoog is the Tiklas Falls.

Upon arriving in the center of the city, tourists would have to travel nine km to reach the falls and another 350-meter walk to reach the heart of the spot.

Caretakers of the area say tourists must bring their own food and drinks since there are no business establishments near the area.

The entrance fee to Tiklas Falls costs 10 pesos.

Cottages are for rent for 50 to 100 pesos.

To ensure the safety and security of the tourists, Ocampo said they have set some rules in visiting the area. They do not allow tourists to swim at the foot of the falls since the power of the water’s current may cause accidents and injuries.

Pools for adults and children are provided so everyone can enjoy the cool waters of the falls.

Aside from the pools in Tiklas Falls, tourists can also enjoy swimming in the JJJ Inland Resort in Barangay Libertad and Guadjus Resort in Barangay Santiago.

Children can also enjoy the city’s children’s playground located near the port of the city.

The playground is a project of the Gingoog City Tourism Council headed by retired Judge Potenciano R. delos Reyes Jr. with an investment of almost P2 million by the organization and the city.

The city also boasts of local talents who have performed in several places in the country and have helped in promoting the city.

Currently, the city has been taking strides in boosting tourism in the area.

Ocampo said that as of February 2013, they have conducted a coordination meeting with the city’s tourism-related establishments which aim to give a new checklist for inspection of hotels/lodge/ inns, restaurants, gas stations, snack centers and entertainment facilities.

“The test has been successful, we can do it”.

This was the message spread among the members of the Centrist Democratic Party of the Philippines (CDP), when the results of the May 13 election started to be come in on May 14.

At five out of 13 localities where they had joined the campaigning, they had been able to bring in candidates as councilors, mayor and congressman. In several other places – like Datu Piang in Maguindanao – CDP members won positions after having been forced to file as independents due to the delayed accreditation of the party by COMELEC just days before the deadline for filing candidates in October.

It had been uphill battles: competing for the votes of the people without the expensive dole-outs of the traditional parties and their alliances, without well-paid campaigning machines and huge fees for poll-watchers.

“We only had our message that politics have to be based on values and principles, that we are a role model of a real democratic political party, owned by duespaying members and not a patron, with internal democratic structures and a detailed and meaningful political platform, built on the core value of human dignity, oriented on the Christian and Muslim social teachings.

And we had our committed members and volunteers who spread this message to the voters – many of them in the beginning simply asking for money” – said Rey Padit from Salcedo in Eastern Samar, where the CDP candidate was elected as mayor.

When the members of the Centrist Democratic Movement Federation of the Philippines decided in January 2012 to set up a Political Party in order to fight for their advocacy in the political arena, they were facing a huge challenge. In less than three months they had to organize more than 100 provincial and city chapters of the new party in more than 10 regions of the country in order to meet the criteria of COMELEC for the accreditation as a National Political Party in the 2013 elections.

Relying on decent dues from their members and small donations, without any patron or big family behind, they were able to do it, based on the commitment and enthusiasm of their members – normal citizens who believe that in democracy politics cannot be left to politicians alone. But COMELEC delayed the decision to give the accreditation to CDP as a national political party until few days before the filing of candidates – too late for most places, where CDP was organized, to still decide upon their candidates following their strict internal democratic procedures.

Rufus Rodriguez, elected as president of CDP on September 30, 2012 and as candidate for the House of Representatives of its local CDP district in Cagayan de Oro on October 4, one day before the deadline for filing candidates, won his district against the UNA opponent with more than 80% of the votes.

His message is clear: “We are the future of the democracy in the Philippines. We will fight for a modern, participative and honest political party system in our country. And I am sure that now, after we have entered the political arena, many will join us in the municipalities, cities and in Congress. Because many citizens and politicians are longing for a new system – a system without patronage and huge vote buying. And our party has proved now: it is possible, we can win.

Venture in adventure! To do or not To do?

Whether planned or unplanned, there is nothing like a great adventure!

I have always believed in breaking free from the usual grind once in a while, to get away from the daily chores and experience a world away from the familiar.

This gives a sense of freedom and excitement and a great way to test one's character as well.

Going out to explore new environments and sampling a portion of worlds beyond the ordinary sets me out to experience how it is to be out there and interact with people and react to different conditions. I am not a finicky kind of person and I find pleasure in simple things so I realized that one of the most important things to bring when going out for a vacation or a quick getaway is an open mind.

With this, you get to enjoy even the slightest of moments and even the seemingly stressful glitches and minor bumps in your perfect vacation become a challenge worth smiling about. All the time spent with

loved ones while away becomes a wonderful memory. Never mind the heat, the humid air, the long queues and a few delays in trip schedules because all these make the trip even more unforgettable.

I suggest at least once a year, you must head out and spend some time outdoors. Set aside incoming work emails and pay attention to yourself and your loved ones. Short breaks need not to be expensive; it is not where you spent it but how and with whom. And after soaking up some much needed sun and fresh air, you will appreciate your work, your life and your world even better.

As they say YOLO (you only live once), so make the most out of life, open up to the world and imbibe the beauty that surrounds you.

Embrace a sunny attitude and engage in wonderful adventures once in a while and for sure you will have your own endless summer.

Lake Lanao Two of my fellow advocates in the energy industry have proposed similar, albeit slightly different short term solutions to the Mindanao Power Crisis which ostensibly can address the prevailing energy shortage in the island.

However, the common denominator to both options is running Mindanao’s big diesel plants 24/7 instead of only during peak hours, thereby increasing their capacity or load factors (the total energy potential of an engine) and enable the National Power Corporation which operates the AgusPulangi hydroelectric power complexes in Lanao and Bukidnon provinces to store more water and then release them during peak hours.

Engr. Cerael “Dodong” Donggay, former Vice President for Mindanao of the Napocor, likens the diesel power plants to a charger which enables the Agus-Pulangi hydroelectric power complexes to store power reserves (as the ‘battery’) during the “off-peak” hours and release them during the evening “peak hours.”

This scheme would in effect eliminate the rotating brownouts now plaguing Mindanao and dispel the need for hard up rural electric cooperatives to borrow the PhP 4.4-billion allocated by the national government as soft loans through the National Electrification Administration

(NEA) to either purchase or lease modular diesel generators which would ostensibly also eliminate rotating brownouts but would cost the coops PhP 18 per kilowatt hour (/kWh).

Compare this to the estimated incremental cost of PhP 1.34/kWh (over the present grid rate of PhP 4.00/kWh) and any grade school kid with a modicum of math can tell you that’s way cheaper than the PhP 18/ kWh which coops would pay with the modular gensets. The scheme proposed

by Engr. Robert F. Mallillin, chairman of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s (PCCI) energy committee shows a similar cost advantage.

According to Dodong, “regulating the Lake Lanao energy storage is likened to battery being charged by alternator using voltage regulator the Rule Curve (RC) guide. Without the Charger equivalent of the Power Barges, NPC engineers are left with no option when the actual Lake Lanao elevation drops below the RC except "Load Shedding" or reducing the Load from the hydro plants,” which result in rotating brownouts.

Mindanao’s comparative advantage is unique: it has Lake Lanao which can impound 350 square kilometers of water under strict environmental control, unlike dams in other countries which have limited impounding capacity.

Dodong also differs from Bob in his analysis of the way the diesel plants in Mindanao are now utilized, most especially the two 100MW former power barges of Napocor which were purchased and now operated by Aboitiz Power affiliate Therma Marine Inc. (TMI).

Although he agrees with Bob the diesel plants are under utilized as purely “peaking plants,” he takes exception specially for the two TMI power barges which since 2011 are merely supplying its various customers instead of acting as the “battery charger” for the Lake Lanao “Battery” as they were utilized during his tenure as VP-Mindanao of Napocor.

Dodong’s proposal is being carried by the Oro Chamber through the Regional Development Council and the Mindanao Development Authority while Bob’s proposal is being endorsed by the PCCI. Either way, they would require TMI’s concurrence and the Energy Regulatory Commissions’ (ERC) approval to redo the energy supply contracts already signed with industrial clients and distribution utilities.

Perhaps, both proponents should also have a “Plan B” involving the diesel assets of CEPALCO and Davao Light which together already exceed 100MW which I’m sure both would willingly run 24/7 for the greater good of all DUs in Mindanao.

God’s Will or Money talks?

For the FUNDS of it all!

Every candidate should be a sore loser unless he chanced upon being a candidate and didn’t really care to win or lose.

And should this be the case he or she has no business running for any position. Rejection is difficult as it is without ones contestants playing with the exercise for the fun of it.

And worse, for the funds of it! In any contest be it for political positions or a beauty contest unless one gives it all his or her best with an investment be it for monies, blood and sweat as the saying goes - it is not feasible to even aspire the position in the end. To be sore at the end of the contest is all but human.

In the Philippines the moniker “no one loses, only cheated” can at times have relevance especially in a contest where the players are excluded from the processes on the evaluation of winners and losers.

Case in point; assume players and voters who are amputated from the exercise once the ballots are sucked by the pcos machine.

Imagine an Ateneo La Salle game at the dome where the game is to be held and you are denied entry.

You get to hear all the sound effects of the game but are restricted to watching it. In the end someone walks out and says; La Salle won.

Would you sit down and accept all the same and worse if you bet Ateneo who you firmly believe should have won due to your perceptions on the strength of the players?

Candidates stay in the contest until Election Day because they believe they have a good chance of winning. And when told by the results on-line, to fail miserably is outright rejection to the nth degree. “I was cheated” is what we can expect from candidates.

God’s will or money talks? Truth be told it is hard to swallow the practice that alienates those who do violate our laws vis-à-vis winning at all COST. We are told over and over again of election violations but no one is ever incarcerated only to run again to retain political positions.

Is it the judiciary that is weak and at fault, or the police, or the comelec, or even the smartmatic pcos, or what?

There are murmurs here and there of commissions being bought, monies spread about for vote-buying, the “hakot” syndrome that is brazenly in operation on election day and numerous other violations that have become SOP and acceptable to the people and the regulators that are tasked to monitor.

Of course now there is even more reason to reject the cumulative sums the pcos has put together with the chair of the comelec being arrogant, abrasive and acting amok violating the Automatic Election Law be it for the negligence of the review of the source codes regardless of the comelec’s predicament with its supplier.

There is also the violation of the WORM (writeonce, read-many) provision of the CF cards. There is also the digital signatures; and so on and so forth.

As of late the uncanny trending of the election results raises suspicions all considering the integrity of the comelec is lost.

In the end it is no longer competence and integrity that wins the elections but the moneyed and violators who spend at all cost to win the contest to the detriment of the masses. Now if only the masses knew what they got themselves into?

How Liquid Are You? Hypokalemic Periodic Paralysis The human body needs certain minerals in order to regulate basic functions that help in the day to day activities that make existence something to look forward to each waking moment.

Potassium is one such mineral: it helps regulate major bodily functions like keeping the heart’s rhythm normal, the blood pressure within the acceptable range, water balance, and yes, making sure that the muscles contract properly.

Potassium can be taken from our favourite foods like bananas, avocado, kiwi, milk, oranges, spinach, carrots and seaweeds, to mention a few.

But, even if our diet consists of foods rich in potassium, there will still be instances when the level of this mineral is low.

A decrease in its level is not only caused by not eating potassium rich foods, but the intake of certain drugs or medications like diuretics to lower blood pressure, or too much licorice.

Vomiting and excessive sweating during heavy physical exertions can make one lose potassium from his/ her body.

And, when this happens, paralysis or weakness of the muscles can happen.

Hypokalemic Periodic Paralysis, although not so common, but when it does occur, can scare the wits out of the affected person.

Usually, it affects the younger age group, most start before the adolescent stage, and is genetically inherited.

The weakness or paralysis mostly affects that of the muscles located at the shoulders and hips, the arms, legs and even the eye muscles, and often happens after sleep or rest.

Imagine waking up from a nap or after an exhilarating exercise, and the once active muscles are now stiff, and unwilling to move.

It is not uncommon too to have the paralysis after indulging in a high carbohydrate, high salt diet, or after taking in too much alcohol, with each episode lasting for 3 to 24 hours.

Other than muscle weakness or paralysis, a patient may present with heart rhythms that are abnormal, difficulty of breathing and swallowing, constipation, fatigue.

A correct diagnosis of the paralysis is important, for management and treatment purposes. Getting a good history of the presenting manifestations ( as discussed above ), laboratory findings of potassium way below what is normal, can already guide the Attending Doctor in his/ her approach to the patient.

An EMG (electromyogram), EEG (heart) or a tissue biopsy may also be performed to help in the diagnosis.

Other than loss of potassium, hyperthyroidism can also result into a periodic paralysis. Another condition that may mimic this is hysterical paralysis, with the latter having no known organic cause and is stress induced.

In this age of hustle and bustle where life seem to be more stressful and pacing is faster, it is most wise to investigate a symptom and not to just label it as hysteria or a psychological by product.

Remember that a wrong diagnosis can lead to a wrong treatment, and it can cost the life of the patient.

Hypokalemic Periodic Paralysis responds well to diet modification, gentle and daily exercise, like taking short walks on a regular basis.

Other than eating potassium rich foods, potassium salt supplements may be prescribed.

There may be instances when the need to raise the potassium level must be immediate and instant to save the life of a patient like when the paralysis is so severe, or there is difficulty in breathing or swallowing or the occurrence of abnormal heart rhythms, that potassium will have to be given intravenously.

Keeping one’s self aware and armed with the correct knowledge for any illness, is just one of those life saving measures that is a MUST in order to survive...

The Made -Up Life of Inyaki Yuson, Artist Jim Russel “Inyaki” Yuson is only 27 and already a quadruple threat in the fashion world. As hair, makeup, and fashion designer, his is that elusive combination of drive, talent, intelligence, and work ethic – the stuff of rock stars sans the fast and short expiration dates.

Steadily, over the past few years, Inyaki learned, trained, and taught hair, makeup, and fashion design at the Fashion Institute of the Philippines in Cagayan de Oro City.

Not the icing but the cake, he is also a registered nurse currently pursuing a master’s degree in medical surgical nursing.

Perhaps it is this training and discipline in the clinical field that gave him the methodical precision with the makeup brush.

This, coupled with the sharpened aesthete of an artist – his resume comes with a smattering of roles as stage actor and host – yielded an impeccable portfolio of makeup art on such high profile faces as Joey Mead, BB Gandanghari, John Lapus, Bianca Araneta – Elizalde, Andi Eigenmann, and Asia’s Next Top Model runner-up, Stephanie Retuya.

These artworks have been published as editorial shoots for Mega Magazine, Celebrity Living, Celebrity Mom, People Asia, Preview Magazine, Meg ZGM: How are these projects with high-profile celebrity clients like? Anything anecdotal with these artistas? Are they any different from the more low-profile clients or models?

JRIY: High profile? You’d have to excuse me on this one.

Ever since college, I’ve always been nonchalant with how we define the social strata. But now that you've mentioned, the "artistas" and "socialites" are pretty much concerned with the same thing as the lowprofile clients. Some are nice, some are demanding, some are thoughtful and some are airheads. But I’ve been lucky so far because I haven’t really encountered a total b**** for a client. As for the models, they don’t really have much of a say with what you do to them. It’s their job. If the project calls for it, I make them look the way the creative director wants them to look.

ZGM: Can you tell us a little about the jet-setting life as makeup artist?

JRIY: If a client from any part of the country and in some rare cases, abroad wishes to book me, I’d be more than

Ever since snagging a top 4 finalist spot on ETC’s Mega Fashion Crew Season 2 Extreme Edition, Inyaki has been hard at work, putting one block at a time in a progressively solidifying makeup-as-art career.

Despite his gravity-defying rise in both the national and international fashion scenes – he has just recently taught an advance fashion makeup workshop in Singapore – Inyaki maintains a level of discernment not commonly found in many a creative personality in this city.

Albeit the traipsing and overachieving from one project to another all over the country and abroad, he keeps everything in check with the knowledge of the dynamic and talent-populated world of hair and makeup art - those who came before, with, and after him in the field.

His humility is inspiring. He refers to the aforementioned traipsing and overachieving as “baby steps” as, in his words, he is far from being “there” yet and his “big break” is still before him.

Wherever and whatever “there” may be, Inyaki Yuson is making certain he enjoys the ride.

willing to fly to them. I mean, this is work. Sure, travelling has its perks but I think of it more as opportunities to expand my experience as an artist and as a professional.

Before I went full time as an artist, I spent 5 years traveling around the Philippines teaching nursing reviews. It’s really not that different although it’s (traveling for makeup work) less stressful.

Being able to travel and do what I love to do feel great.

But if there’s one thing that I’ve learned from flying in and out of one place to do make up, it’s these: 1) Never check in your makeup stash even if you declare it as fragile you'll really never know how the airport people handle them, and 2) If I have to check in a big makeup traincase, I try to put all the "necessary" stuff inside my hand-carry luggage just to make sure because there was this one time I had a connecting flight and they didn’t forward my luggage to the next plane. You can just imagine my horror to find out I was missing my makeup traincase when I had to start doing makeup for a bride in 2 hours! I ran amok the airline office because for one, I was

losing precious money and yes, a possible lawsuit loomed over my head. They told me that they'd deliver it to my hotel but I didn’t have any time for that. Thankfully there was an incoming flight and I got my luggage after waiting for 40 minutes. I would never want to experience that again.

ZGM: What's the difference between the local models and the ones in the capital or abroad?

JRIY: Most of them (models abroad) are taller but Filipino models are more experimental with their "fierceness". Aside from that, there’s not much of a difference. It always boils down to professionalism and work ethics. Professional models know their job. They don’t act like divas. They don’t think of themselves as the star of the shoot. Most of all, they know the essence and meaning of the word “model”, that is, “to model”.

The not-so-professional ones always want to be the center of attention and they always want to stand out.

ZGM: Do you have personal makeup preferences? Do you

prefer a light canvas over a warm one? What are your personal color tendencies?

JRIY: As an artist, I welcome challenges. I always want to learn something out of a certain experience. Although, I would want to experience how it is to be an artist in Europe or the US mainly because they have a very diverse market. I want to do make up for clients with different skin colors and features. In the Philippines and in most Asian countries, we're limited to the Asians and mestizas.

ZGM: What are a professional makeup artist's essential tools?

Are brand names in cosmetics important? Why? JRIY: We are artists. Before any tool and product, one needs an open mind, a keen interest in the arts, and humility to know that there’s always something to learn. Mere talent will not get anyone anywhere.

After that, a good set of brushes and foundation are a makeup artist’s best friends.

For me those are essential in putting on makeup. I take a lot of time prepping the face to perfection.

I am not brand conscious but product conscious. Quality always comes first. And yes, safety too.

ZGM: What is your biggest makeup challenge?

JRIY: Well, that would probably be not having enough money to buy the products and equipment that I want. As an artist, I’m really not brand conscious but I am product conscious. Aside from the skill and artistry, quality products really matter and most don’t come cheap.

ZGM: What is your makeup artist philosophy? A credo you sort of live by when doing makeup projects?

JRIY: Never tell yourself you’re good enough because when you do, learning stops.

Always research, practice, and try to learn from other art forms. It’s good to be draw inspiration from everything.

I also always remind myself never to compare myself to other artists and never to belittle their art. There should always be respect for their unique art even if I don’t necessarily approve of it.

Also, it is and always about

thanking God for this gift and praising him by becoming the best version of myself.

ZGM: I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who are thinking about a career in makeup-as-art field. A few words from the wise, please?

JRIY: Listen to your heart but don’t forget your responsibilities. In any kind of art, it’s not all passion and talent. You also have to use your brain or else be killed in battle. It’s a jungle out there.

If you want to start a career in makeup, research and practice will hone your interest. Find your own uniqueness and don’t just join the bandwagon or else, you’d only be one of "those" makeup artists who never rise above and get stuck in limbo.

Once you're already sure, take calculated risks but take risks nonetheless. In the real world, it’s not always the smart who gets ahead, but the bold.

This I learned from Robert Kiyosaki. Never be afraid to be criticized. Equip yourself with a lot of bravado, guts, cunning, tenacity and the like.

Never be afraid to stand out but always, always, always keep the humility

Volunteers find a home in Balay

THEY are found in all sorts of situations, in all social strata, in all levels of society, in churches, in government, in the private sector, in the rebel movement, in the cities and in the barrios.

T h ey a r e a d e p t a t adapting to any situation and circumstance except maybe their own because all they think about is “the others” that they oftentimes forget about “the self.”

And they are often bulingit (literally translated “dirty”) not because they don’t take a bath or because they don’t take care of themselves. No! On the contrary, they are some of the world’s most clean and healthy individuals. But yes!

They are bulingit because they most often do literally dirty and thankless works that others shun doing, especially if the dirty work make a difference in the life of their fellows.

When they do a “job”, they do it as if there is no tomorrow. They oftentimes lost track of time if it means getting the job done. Again, not for themselves, but for their fellows. No supertyphoon, deluge or fire can prevent them from reaching out to the needy; in fact, disasters all the more get them going.

They are altruistic, daring daredevils who will stop at nothing just to ease the sufferings of other people.

Even for just a day.

And they call it a day when they see a hint of a smile from those they are helping.

They are made of the toughest materials God reserved for their kind. Deep inside each of them, however, one can find the most soft, cushy and mushy individual who cries just at the sight

of an old couple with their dog huddled in a makeshift shanty in a corner of a posh establishment or at the sight of a barefooted, butt-naked child in tattered rags whose face is smeared with grease, dirt and dried “nose juices” begging on the steps of a fastfood chain.

Like a fly fleeting from one rotting carcass to another, they look for the worst situation so that can give of their best and make society a much better place to live in.

They think and live in the present. But their “job” always factor in the future. Not of their own, but of others.

They don’t mind minding other’s sufferings that sometimes their very own family suffers because of their absence.

They are always on the go.

They agonized when leaving but feel strange upon returning.

Homeless nomads, that’s what they are.

A n d t h ey a r e c a l l e d VOLUNTEERS. Volunteers act to meet a need. They do without monetary consideration.

They are full of the spirit of ser vice and have very strong moral values. They are sensitive to human pain and suffering.

They are the best of leaders who muster followers not by their words or commands but by their very example; they have good interpersonal relationships.

A n d t h ey a c t a s t h e community’s social conscience by their very deeds which act as a candle that lights society while at the same time act as a mirror that reflects it.

Volunteers for FAITH And in a Philippines that greatly needed FAITH, volunteers are there rising to the challenge to answer F-A-IT-H with faith—a strong belief that what they are doing will bear fruit and impact society for the better.

What is F-A-I-T-H? For the VIPS—Volunteers In the Philippines—it refers to Food security and poverty alleviation; Access to education and culture; Integrity of creation or the environment; Truthfulness and transparency in governance; and Human security at all level, not only peace and order, but also in development.

F-A-I-T-H is the development challenge the world, that is beginning to lost all faith in their public officials, is trying to solve. Thanks to the volunteers, their strong faith (belief) that they are making small differences in the world, continue to ignite faith in others—a faith that is not religious but very contagious.

And rightly so since 2013 has been declared the Year of Faith by the Vatican.

“Volunteers are being challenged to continue to do our best to answer all these developmental challenges. Let’s continue to give of ourselves,” said Myrna Aboniawan-Siose, vice president for Program Development of the VOICE Network, Inc. Siose — a former JVP vo l u n t e e r w h o fo u n d e d together with Arc hbishop Antonio J. Ledesma, the Year of Service (YOS) — reminded everyone, especially newlyelected officials, to cultivate the spirit of the volunteer in service to the Filipino.

Recognizing the role of volunteers in nation-building, Malacaňang enacted in 2007 Republic Act 9418 or the Volunteer Act of 2007, which mandates government t o h a r n e s s vo l u n t e e r i s m as a strategy for social transformation, sustainable national development and international cooperation.

R.A. 9418 provides (1) the policy framework that shall underscore the fundamental principles necessary to harmonize the broad and diverse efforts of the voluntary sector; (2) a conducive and enabling environment for the mobilization and nurturance of volunteers and volunteer organizations; and (3) the structure to strengthen the Philippine National Volunteer Service Coordinating Agency (PNVSCA) as an effective institution to support volunteerism in the country.

In short, it recognizes the vital but different roles of different sectors of society, including gover nment, in building the country.

“Volunteerism is the essence of people’s participation in governance,” said DILG Sec. Manuel Araneta Roxas III or MAR. Roxas issued on March 26, 2013 DILG Memorandum Circular 2013-27 directing all provincial governors, city and municipal mayors and DILG regional directors and others concerned to institutionalize in their jurisdictions the Volunteer and Citizenship Program (VCP) in order to fully harness available human resources in the community for nationbuilding.

“It is along the context of volunteerism that good

governance could greatly be enhanced at the local government levels if untapped human resource could be harnessed and mainstreamed into community endeavors in the different service areas of local governance,” he said.

Following the issuance of the Circular, Regional Director Rene Burdeos of the DILG Nor ther n Mindanao, and Siose, forged an agreement to mobilize their respective institution’s exper tise to promote and advocate for good governance in the LGUs as a demonstration of good citizenship.

“A r e s p o n s i b l e a n d engaged citizen is one who has a strong spirit of volunteerism, one who is always drawn to doing something for the good of others, in the service of the disadvantaged; one who does extra-ordinary even for the ordinary, for the common good and interest beyond the self and personal,” Siose said.

“If this is the perspective of those who make platforms their promises for the betterment of people, perhaps this could be an emergence of a transformative governance, with the strategic and enabling partnership with the church and interfaith groups and the CSO,” said one of the founder of the VOICE Network, Inc. VOICE Network: VOICE, for Volunteer Organizations Information Coordination and Exchange, is a network of volunteer organizations (VOs) and volunteer service programs (VSPs) in the Philippines.

It links VOs and VSPs for information and resource exchange towards sustainable volunteer service in the country, stressed its president Dr. Grace Aguiling-Dalisay.

It was formed in 2001 during the International Year of the Volunteer after many VOs and VSPs realized that they can do so much more for the country if they form one umbrella organization that will facilitate and coordinate information and exchanges of resources, among others. “ We r e a l i z e d t h a t different organizations can help strengthen each other since some organizations have so many resources but lack programs or training while other are experts in trainings or program design but lack needed resources.

And on September 2003, VOICE Network, Inc. was formally registered as a nonstock, non-profit organization with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

At home in Balay: Since its founding, VOICE— true to the nomadic spirit of the volunteer—went from different institutions of learning such as UP Diliman, Miriam College and Xavier UniversityAteneo del Cagayan, trying to establish a “home” for itself. Until finally, on its 10th anniversary on May 7, it found a home in the peace and development non-government organizations Balay Mindanaw Group of NGOs (BMG) of Cagayan de Oro City.

For BMG chief Charlito “Kaloy” Z. Manlupig, VOICE’s coming to BMG is not only providential but also natural, especially since majority of BMG’s officials, staff and personnel are former bulingits of the Year of Service (YOS).

YOS volunteers throughout the years fondly call each other bulingit. “ Vo l u n t e e r s a r e t h e lifeblood of BMG,” he said.

“They are the gift of Balay Mindanaw to the people of Mindanao.”

And for VOICE President Dalisay, their “coming home to Balay” is historical because it marked the first time that the umbrella organization of volunteers has come to “live” right in the hear t of an NGO—a volunteer organization.

“Now that we are finally home in Balay Mindanaw, let us all join hands and work together in strengthening volunteerism in our country so we can help solve our country’s needs,” she said.

M i n d a n a o ’s fo r e m o s t volunteer advocate and volunteer formator Archbishop Antonio J. Ledesma, SJ, DD — who is fondly called tatay or lolo Shopi by YOS volunteers and their children — urged the volunteers not to let their successes blind them to the vast needs that await them.

He said volunteers are also migrant workers “since you volunteer where the need is and you go there to meet that need.”

T h ey m ay b e m i g ra n t workers, but at least, they finally found a home in Balay.

CAGAYAN DE ORO -- The Department of Energy (DOE) conducted a seminar recently on Energy Efficiency and Conservation here to inform the public on ways to ensure safety at home and tips on buying Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG).

Senior Science Research Specialist Norita Froilan said the LPG produced in the Philippines is a mixture of 60 percent butane and 40 percent propane gases. It is colorless and has no smell so for safety purposes, manufacturers added Ethyl Mercator so consumers can detect any leak in the LPG container.

Froilan said consumers must first check the gas burner to make sure that it is free from any dirt or impurities.

To save time and cost, ingredients and condiments must be prepared ahead of time, and consumers should also determine required boiling time for each cooking activity.

He pointed out that calculating the net content of LPG helps a lot in ensuring a wise buy. She said the difference between the LPG tare weight and the weight of the filled

tank is the net content of the LPG. Furthermore, consumers must check if the cylinder is still in good conditionmaking sure that they will not have the rusty ones, and they should buy cylinders that are properly marked and painted.

For safety tips on handling LPG, consumers must not invert LPG cylinders or let it lie horizontally on the floor.

Froilan also shared that consumers must use only LPG resistant rubber hoses with clamps which are regularly checked for wear, cracks and leaks using soap and water. Also, LPG cylinders must be kept away from electrical points and other sources of fire or ignition. Consumers should not also store LPG cylinders in enclosed kitchen cabinets.

In addition to these helpful tips, Froilan shared basic yet important reminders like opening all doors and windows to improve ventilation, and taking the LPG cylinder in an open area and getting in touch with the distributor for emergency cases.

The Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro City (RCCDO) is celebrating its 65th Anniversary as a social and civic organization that concerns itself with service for others. Rotarians live by the motto of “Service Above Self” as they continue doing humanitarian missions and other service-oriented

activities for the benefit of the society and the world.

Mindanao’s biggest club, and also recognized as The Mother Club, RCCDO was organized on April 22, 1948. The club started from a small group of 17 charter members and has constantly grown over the years.

The Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro held its regular meeting, Thursday, May 30 at the Casa Real, VIP Hotel this city.

Dubbed as “ENRICHED”, Rodelsa Hall’s series of cultural presentations comprising the Season for 2013, aims to gather resources to help sustain the projects of Safer River Foundation.

Forget Scouting

Scouting is an association where young boys and girls spend much of their time to have fun, conquer themselves, enjoy the thrill and adventurous activities all rolled into one.

It is where boys are trained to become future leadership greats– well rounded leaders at that. Becoming a scout is often a sign that a young boy is finally coming of age ready to venture out into the open.

Ready to be conquered or conquer the universe before him.

Days and nights of camping would soften a scout into submission to be loyal to the scout ideals.

Starting from school camporals, a scout would be subjected to all elements away from the comforts of one’s home.

Away from one’s bed and away from the ever temptous callings of advanced technology in the pretext of ipad minis, ipad, and flat TV’s and not to mention the internet. The morning delicious home cooking of mom will surely be missed by a scout.

The comfort of one’s kitchen and bathroom is not a luxury for any scout who is into camping.

The luxury of waking up late is all but lost either for a morning jog and morning patrol/crew

duties.

Much more is late sleeping time after a wonderful campfire and a noisy crew, all eager to share their stories.

A district camporal with all the skills test are another level of scouting difficultly one had to undergo to experience all the adventure and fun of scouting life. It’s another avenue to mould into perfection one’s scouting skill and meet new friends.

one sometimes into trouble with just anyone.

Activities and competitions are often fierce and challenging. A scout begins to be involved with merit badge fever and collecting all 21 is much more loathsome and mind-numbing.

Its race to become a highest awardee recipient and getting waylaid in the process is not an exception at all.

P ro v i n c i a l a n d r e g i o n a l jamborees are just as perilous as all previously enumerated here.

Activities are now more gratifying and vigorous at the same time.

Sometimes it is often becoming a lethargic display of selfcenteredness.

And to top it all it’s a venue where talents from abound are magnified and if you don’t have any you’ll be eaten up by the competition and before you know it, you’ll be out of the loop.

Here, campfires are grand and exorbitant. Presentations are performed to send messages

across and beyond.

Exhibits and exhibitions are rampant and are often a source of inspiration for young boys in the scouting ladder start up.

National Jamborees, Moots and Venture Camps are a showcase of colors and talents not to mention the magnitude of the events at this level.

More often than not, scouts who come all the way to such national event go home wanting for more.

The camaraderie and excitement of being in a national event outweighs the financial considerations that come with it.

It is rather a spectacle of scout pageantry and scout innovations at the highest order.

Never before a scout who participates in such event and not yearn for another big event.

Indeed, scouting life is tiresome but full of fun.

It is where adventure and camaraderie never fails to flabbergast anyone within the movement.

It is where friendship knows no boundaries and where youthfulness outgrows old norms.

Innovation is key and scouting skill is a virtue to live for.
