Globe debunks rival’s claim of highest growth in postpaid Globe maintains lead in postpaid subscriber base and revenue shares

D

ebunking its rival’s claim that its postpaid subscriber base posted the highest growth in the industry, Globe Telecom revealed that it gained the most number of postpaid subscribers in 2012 not by basis of percentage growth but by actual base growth in net subscriber additions.

According to its official disclosures, Globe acquired 279,762 new postpaid customers, trumping Smart which added 132,943 subscribers ending 2012.

Sun, on the other hand, gained 218,352.

“Percentage growth does not necessarily translate to the highest growth in the industry, especially if you’re coming from a relatively lower base, thus giving the

perception that your growth is bigger than the rest.

Real growth looks at actual subscriber additions over a specific period of time,” Globe Head of Postpaid Martha Sazon said.

On a quarter-on-quarter level, Globe still claimed the top spot with 71,715 new subscribers in 4Q 2012, a 14% increase from the previous quarter. Smart obtained 24,607 customers during the same period while Sun added 46,495.

Ending 2012, Globe postpaid subscriber share stood at 43.5%, Sun at 39.4%, while Smart gets the remaining 17.1%.

In the area of postpaid service revenues, Globe clearly had the edge over its competitors, with revenues of P22.8 billion ending 2012, a

hefty 24% increase from previous year’s P18.5 billion, translating to a 56.2% postpaid revenue share. On the other hand, combined revenues of its two competitors were at P17 billion with a 43.8% combined revenue share.

With this phenomenal growth in postpaid subscriber base and service revenues, Globe easily secures the spot of being the biggest and most consistently-growing postpaid brand in the country.

Early this year, Globe scored exclusive deals with two of the world’s biggest smartphone brands Samsung and CloudFone, getting first dibs on the Samsung Galaxy SIII mini and the CloudFone tablet and phone bundle. Both

devices are offered with more plan options, giving subscribers more flexibility and the true freedom to enjoy their calls, texts, and mobile internet.

CEB set to launch direct Cebu-Taipei flights

T

he Philippines’ largest national flag carrier, Cebu Pacific (PSE:CEB) will launc h direct flights between the island of Cebu and Taipei, Taiwan on July 5, 2013. This strengthens the airline’s Cebu hub with a total of seven international routes.

“CEB believes this new route will open up tourism and trade opportunities between the Philippines and Taiwan, and provide tourists with the lowest fare alternative on the most extensive network in the Philippines,” said CEB VP for Marketing and Distribution Candice Iyog.

Taiwan is one of Asia’s most unique destinations, with top attractions including the

Sun Moon Lake, the Alishan National Scenic Area, and the National Palace Museum.

CEB’s Cebu-Taipei twice weekly service will be every Monday and Friday. It will depart Cebu at 7:40pm and arrive in Taipei at 10:20pm.

The return flight will depart Taipei at 11:05pm, and arrive in Cebu at 1:45am.

To introduce its newest route, CEB holds a PHP699 Cebu-Taipei seat sale from April 4 to 5, 2013 or until s e a t s l a s t . T h i s i s va l i d for travel from July 5 to September 30, 2013. After the seat sale, lowest yearround fares from Cebu to Taipei start at P2,399.

Chasing Dreams

B

y now, the rented togas are returned, the grad photos are proudly displayed on Facebook or Instagram, the gifts are opened and the parties are long gone.

So what happens next to the fresh batch of college graduates?

Are they ready for the next step? Or are there opportunities waiting for them just around the bend?

Seeing all the hopeful smiles and beaming eyes, I always wonder what these young graduates hold. Will they ever find their dream jobs or they will just end up as part of the growing statistics of the unemployed. To step out of school and clutching a diploma is never a surefire hit for a life of bliss and fulfilled dreams nowadays. So, as I browse their photos, I say a prayer that they may become what

they always wanted to be.

Today’s job market has become so intense that it takes more than a handful of factors to land the job.

Guts, determination, character and the willingness to fulfill the required job are just a few key elements in order to be in the position and to stay there or move higher. It is not enough to reproduce two dozen copies of one’s resume and send it to countless companies. It is the desire to work and the passion for the job that sometimes make dreams happen.

In this modern world, one must know how to be on top of the game and must be aware of one’s potentials and advantages in order to become what one aspires for. The ability to adapt to the work settings, to meet the desired output and to have a keen foresight

I am not writing this to scare the wits out of the fresh graduates but this is a reminder that after the euphoric feeling of having been out of the school box, they must get ready for the real battle and must not lose hope if rejections come one after the other. One more thing, never compare your life story to other people, if they have made it on their first try good for them but if

Keep refueling your energy and make things work. Never rely on connections or your achievements because they come in handy but never a guarantee. To make dreams happen, don’t just sit there and wait for the right timing, your fate is your choice. Life is indeed uncertain and success is one’s own making.

So to the new batch of graduates, as they say, Carpe Diem (seize the moment)!

In the few years since 2006 that I have known the artist Kelly Ramos, I have been in constant awe of her work in the visual arts, writing, and cultural work.

Already, upon my first encounter of her impressive work, she has participated in numerous group exhibitions, maintained an art and culture column for three years, written for top freelancing blogs on the internet, and published in selected newspapers and magazines.

As Coordinator for Northern Mindanao at National Commission For Culture and the Arts and Visual Arts Director at Red Lambago Arts Collective, she was at the helm of many successful community projects and events, curated group shows, and, while she was at it, won a Philippine Art Award prize on the side as well.

That she is all these and did all that were not as jaw-dropping as the fact that she had three boys, two of whom were under 5 years old, when I first knew her.

Recently, and in keeping with the catalog of time-space defying things this one-woman creative factory does, Kelly is part of the ongoing group show PASTiche at the Nova Art Gallery, Manila.

For the show, Kelly painted impasto-style portraits of family members using old photos as reference points. In these paintings, the complexes of family relations can be viewed as openly and as liberally as the artworks’ orientations.

Most of the canvases are halved to clean out the long-gone from the present, the floaty from the stone-heavy, expectation from actual happenstance.

These contrasting images pull at or away from each other in equal-sized spaces, always and in good measure. A highwire tightness is achieved in the stark contrasts of the young and old, light and heavy, florid and plain, dropping a singular weight on the viewer.

Even when school is out learning should be continuous; though upfront you are not learning academically but developing the other skills have a greater impact later on in life. I have students as young as Four Years old who started singing with me even when barely I can

understand the words they were singing but after a year of constant training their diction, voice quality and stage presence began to progress and as an impact to their academics majority of them are top students in their classes this school year.

Personally it was already late in high school that I knew I had the gift in singing and so I began taking voice lessons as well.

When I got to college

and even when I was still in Nursing, music was still a big part of me and I guess it’s one the major reasons why I gave the up the course. After which, I concentrated on choral music while studying Mass Communications and it was then that I became a dean’s lister and finish the course with very good academic grades even with the very hectic schedule as a performer and a non academic scholar. You

might not see right then and there the effects of such musical trainings but mind you later on you will realize its big impact, as discipline, patience and perseverance guide you in your day to day life.

What Is Your Financial Life Stage?

“Success is goals and all else is commentary.” – Brian Tracy Have you ever pondered where you are right now in your financial life? What have you done so far? What are the hard financial goals that you need to address now and in the future?

Ask yourself where do you want to be financially in five years? In ten years? Close your eyes, project yourself into the future, and picture out an ideal image of yourself. Then open your eyes and go back into the present and think of what you should be doing now and in the next few months and years to make that future vision of yours a reality. This is “back-from-the-future” thinking.

Every single individual goes through the different stages of life. And as we go though these stages, it pays to realize that each one has its own unique financial concerns.

After hurdling through college and landing a job of your own, some level of independence begins. When your parents cease giving you obligatory financial support, the world then expects you to begin working for your keep.

But when time comes that you have a family of your own, more goals kick in and some priorities may change! More mouths to feed mean new expenses vying for the same hard-earned peso. And you continue on hoping that more and more of that peso will come. Yet, the same mouths you feed will eventually find the necessities of education – and this means more and more costs to shoulder.

And towards the end when your nestlings have started to fly with wings of their own, you soon realize that your own productivity isn't everlasting. Somehow you do wake up, needing to find ways to fend for yourself, before falling flat on your face with the grim truth of zero active income.

As you move forward to success, are you amassing sizable wealth? How do you intend to leave it as a legacy to your heirs? Perhaps it would be appropriate to plan your estate as well.

As time takes its toll and whether you like it or not, these financial needs unwaveringly arrive. The kids grow up and you do age older, steadily with every passing year. By the laws of nature, it is but unavoidable – your mind and body deteriorates in function through time. These are stark realities, which in due time you'll have to confront face to face. The big question is: "Are you financially prepared?"

CRIMINALITY on the rise?

Travelers are alarmed by the series of events pulled from Police report that dampen human spirits and strike fear of safety to our citizens.

It reminds us of a famous line uttered by the illustrious son of Misamis Oriental, the late Vice President Emmanuel Pelaez who was in the brink of death after he was ambushed and wounded in the streets of Manila in the late 70’s. Criminal activities are no longer confined in the big cities of the National Capital Region but have gone to as far as the corridor of a friendly city that is now poised to equal if not surpass the crime rate of bigger cities in the metropolis.

From our deep slumber we would like to think and welcome bearer of good news instead of sensational crime stories in the local dailies and radio flash reports. Time is fast changing with the economics and population of our city that has not been prepared and strategized as growth comes. We allowed dark alleys and overcrowding of city dwellers with informal settlers’ crowding every corner of a vacant public space.

Mendicancy and begging are tolerated even in the perimeter of church yards, major road intersection and the vicinity of public buildings. Disorderly situations and lack of jobs contribute to criminality.

With no immediate and firm solutions to the series of crimes that hit the city, children may be forced to imagine the arrival of

The sporadic incidents reported in the local newspaper headlines points to a breakdown of peace and order. It is not an isolated incident but it now appears as a daily grind that cowered the innocents and disturb the business community.

Criminality strike fear among helpless citizens and the travelling public. Much more drive away investments especially if foreign nationals are the victims. It is retrogression to business because crime is a disease which adds costs to security and endangers human lives.

We still have to hear a marching order from those who are in-charge directing the Police to capture and bring to justice the perpetrators. In Davao City, the marching order is capture and punish. Criminals are given 24 hours to surrender or get out before they are dead.

A city government with unaudited intelligence funds and direct Police supervision should be made accountable to the public for this rush of crimes. Have they exhibited their visibility and lend their multimillion discretionary funding to help the Police effort prevent and find the solutions?

Fighting criminality for our elected officials is winning public support.

Their lack of sincere actions or the absence of it deserves public alienations because peace and order are the joint effort of those who enforce the laws and those who created them.

Do we need new heroes in our time to breathe augurs to our drive for an orderly city?

The public is aware that it is an election period, campaigns and accommodations are the priorities of those who govern many are now running to keep their post.

The more that that they should be sensitive to public issues and act according to their sworn oath of protecting and serving their citizens.

The late Arsenio Lacson, a former Congressman and erstwhile Mayor of Manila in the early 60’s use to walk in the streets of Manila in the evening with the foot patrol of the Manila Police Department to have a grasp of peace and order.

Ramon Magsaysay when he was still the Secretary of National Defense before being elected as the 5th President of the Philippine Republic visits far flung villages in Central Luzon to reach out to the leaders of the Hukbalahap movement to convince them to return to the fold of the law by offering land reform beneficiaries to the communist rebels.

Those were the leaders whose contribution to achieve peace and order matters most to our elders even if in their times the “intelligence funds” were not yet invented.

Soft Tissue Sarcoma O ne o f t h o s e d i f f i c u l t c a s e s t o sometimes give a very definitive diagnosis is that whic h we call as the Small Round Cell Tumors. They get their name from the way they look under the microscope.

There are even instances when special tests like imuno-histochemical studies need to be performed on the specimen, just to be able to give the classification of the tumor. A tumor can either be a carcinoma or a sarcoma, depending on their cell of origin.

People are more aware of the for mer than the latter, thus, we get to have more infor mation on the Big C. Sarcomas may not be as common as carcinomas, but, they are in existence and are as real as the Big C’s.

A sarcoma can either affect the bones or soft tissues. I want to limit this ar ticle on the soft tissues ( reser ving another time for that of the bones ). A soft tissue sarcoma can develop from the fat, m uscles, b l o o d ve s s e l s, d e e p s k i n t i s s u e s, and even the ner ves.

It is more commonly seen to a f f e c t t h e ex t r e m i t i e s , l i k e t h e ar ms, legs, feet and hands. Just like its counterpar t the Big C, Sarcomas can also be benign or malignant. Sarcomas, though of

various types, in general, share the same c haracteristics, produce almost similar symptoms, with nearly similar treatment modalities.

When the mass or lesion is still small, it may be seen as a lump and is often not given m uc h attention.

There are instances when, one is aler ted only with the presence of pain or swelling, whic h, again is taken for granted.

It is when the size is big or gets bigger, and the surrounding organs are pressed that a patient then seeks consultation.

Diagnosing the disease will definitely require a thorough medical history taking and physical examination. In most instances, there is no known cause and there are types of sarcoma that are hereditary and belong to a spectr um of diseases.

Imaging studies like X Ray, CT Scan and MRI are very useful in localizing as well as in monitoring the progression or spread of the sarcoma. But, the most impor tant tool in arriving at the diagnosis is a biopsy, whic h can be done through a needle aspiration, tr u cut or an open biopsy. Once the sample is submitted for processing and reading, a diagnosis is then given out and treatment options discussed.

She was only 16 at that time and it star ted as a swelling on her right foot. The parents, despite the advise to amputate the affected area, refused to do so.

And, it was kind of sad that, after 2 years from the time of diagnosis, that this sweet and beautiful gir l died from m ultiple organ failure: the tumor spread to the pelvic area, the kidneys and liver.

Limb saving, wherein a wider resection that will include the negative margins, is a better option for most patients. This , in many instances , i s c o m b i n e d w i t h C h e m o t h e ra py and radiation.

The importance of an open communication between the attending doctor, the patient and the family members once again cannot be over-emphasized.

Sur vival rate may still be low for most of the Sarcomas, but, then again, doing what needs to be done, with the ultimate goal of giving these patients quality life, is indeed a c hoice and an option.

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- Xavier University–Ateneo d e C a gaya n t h ro u g h i t s Kinaadman Research Center identified the ‘environment’ sector as primary concern and ‘basic services’ as prime need of the residents here based on their “Barangaylevel Community Problems and Needs Identification” with an accompanying 2013 poll survey conducted just recently.

It appeared in the research that the environment ranked first in the problem identification and basic services as prime need of the community. The former includes solid waste management, waste water management,

river-related problems and sea cleanliness while the latter involves infrastructures, housing, education, government support and so on.

Dr. Astrid Lara Sinco of Kinaadman specified that out of the survey and analysis of the data, the results showed that the problems to be addressed by the upcoming public officials and political parties are the following: environment with the highest problem identified by the respondents, basic services, peace and order, health, and lastly economics.

The XU research agenda further presented the different sectors wherein there are urgent problems including peace or law and order particularly theft/robbery, illegal drugs and solvent, prostitution, police visibility/ barangay tanod presence and group conflict.

Health is also an issue specifically in Philhealth membership, sanitation (road/ drainage) and toilets.

City local gover nance came out in terms of traffic in the city/road management, legislation/implementation, city corruption and public market.

Food security was also identified wherein there is a

problem with employment and adequate food on the table.

The researc h was conducted in the two districts of Cagayan de Oro—District 1 and District 2 wherein a sample size of 600 voters was calculated, each district having 300 respondents.

During the presentation, it reflected that most barangays here have problems with drainage/ canals, theft/robbery, road maintenance, cleanliness of roads and canals, city traffic management and illegal drugs/solvent.

According to Dr. Hilly Ann Quiaoit of the Research and Social Outreach (RSO) of the university, they conducted this research because of the goal of the university to have stronger formation, greater societal engagement, and help for a better administration.

Through this, they need to identify the needs and to provide information that would aid for the formulation of platforms of the candidates for election.

Suc h researc h aims to generate public opinion of the Cagayan de Oro City electorates in terms of problems and needs to be addressed by incoming public officials and political parties.

The Gypsy Swallows of Downtown Zamboanga

uring a recent media familiarization tour to Zamboanga City arranged by the Department of Tourism regional offices of Western and Northern Mindanao, and Cebu Pacific Air, our party of travel writers and officials from Northern Mindanao were intrigued by a cryptic entry in our official itinerary.

It s a id “Bi rdwatch i ng at Zamboanga City’s main t h o r o u g h f a r e .” N o t h i n g extraordinary about the item itself, it was the time that intrigued us: 8:00 o’clock in the evening!

It was only when we were a l re ady pa s si ng t h rou g h Climaco Avenue (formerly known as Guardia Nacional Street) the evening of our first day tour that we understood why DOT included the cryptic entry.

Perched on the electric w ires a long bot h sides of Zamboanga City’s main street were thousands upon thousands of small birds, spaced perfectly apart as if in military formation!

They occupied not only one but almost all strands of the socalled spaghetti wires strung along the thoroughfare: electric wires, telephone wires, cable TV wires and what-have-you.

Ma ny of us were so awestruck by the sight that our hosts had to stop our vehicles to allow us to get down and gawk.

Mary June Bugante, the regional tourism director for Region 9(Western Mindanao) told us they were barn and pacific swallows, migratory birds whose arrival in the region usually heralded the coming of spring in nearby temperate countries like China and Japan.

Swallows are agile flyers and seldom seen near the ground.

Unlike swifts and house martins, the swallow has a deeply forked t a i l w h ic h c a n

measure 8 centimeters (cms.) in length and a beautiful red throat. They can often be seen perching on wires, especially around migration time, when they gather in f locks. They are famous for their incessant trilling.

“They started coming in great numbers and perching on our electric wires some ten years ago during the tenure of our late Mayor Caling Lobregat,” Ms. Bugante said. “For some reason, they have decided to make Zamboanga City their home and never left.”

The Pacific Swallow or Hill Swallow (Hirundo tahitica) is a small (13 cm.) passerine bird of the swallow family.

A passerine is a bird of the order Passeriformes, which includes more than half of all bird species. Sometimes known as perching birds , the passerines form one of the most diverse terrestrial vertebrate orders; with over 5,000 identif ied species, it has roughly twice as many species as the largest of the mammal orders, the Rodentia. It contains more than 110 families, the second most of any order of vertebrates (after the Perciformes).

The Pacific Swallow breeds in tropical southern Asia from southern India and Sri Lanka across to South East Asia and the islands of the south Pacific. It is resident apart from some local seasonal movements. This bird is associated with coasts, but is increasingly spreading to forested uplands.

dusky underparts. It differs from the Barn Swallow in its shorter and less forked tail. It is similar in behavior to other aerial insectivores, such as other swallows and the unrelated swifts. It is a fast flyer and feeds on insects, especially flies, while airborne.

The Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica), on the other hand, is the most widespread species of swallow in the world. It is a distinctive passerine bird with blue upperparts, a long, deeply forked tail and curved, pointed wings. It is found in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas.

The Barn Swallow is a bird of open country and normally uses man-made structures to breed and consequently has spread with human expansion. It builds a cup nest from mud pellets in barns or similar structures and feeds on insects caught in flight.

This species lives in close association with humans, and its insect-eating habits mean that it is tolerated by man; this acceptance was reinforced in the past by superstitions regarding the bird and its nest.

Back home, and over a month after our visit to Zamboanga, we were gazing out at the Cagayan River over the Maharlika Bridge while waiting for the traffic to move, when my wife Gardy said, “Look at the birds on the wire!” I turned around and saw what were unmistakably the same species of birds that have made downtown Zamboanga City their home perched on the power lines strung beside the bridge! What were they doing in Cagayan de Oro? But that wasn’t the end of it. Myrna Aboniawan Siose, a friend with whom I share many advocacies through the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro headed by Archbishop Antonio Ledesma, also had a similar experience in Agusan del Sur. “One evening (January 30, 2013), when I was traveling back from a seven-day disaster response work in Baganga, Davao Oriental, we stopped for gas at San Francisco, Agusan del Sur. While having our tank refilled at a gas station near the parish church, I asked the seminarians traveling with us to get down for a while to stretch arms and back. As we walked around, we noticed t hat t he electric wires crossing the i ntersec t ions were t h ic k with birds... plent y...

hundreds in one strip of wire.

There were at least five wires in that intersection and it was really so amazing to look at them occupying every inch in disciplined stance.

The few minutes gas refill became a 45 minute “birdswatching” so we decided to have coffee in a sidewalk painitan.

We were so amazed at the sight and the stories of the vendor how the birds would find their place on the wires each night.

We bid farewell to the birds who were standing steady-still on the wires bringing with us our own interpretation of their presence there. It was 10:45pm.

That trip to Baganga was my fourth so I would have seen enough of the roads and the wires alongside but it was only in San Francisco I saw these swallows...quever? Their presence there and then may well be telling us something... tilimad-on or pahinumdum tingale.”

We turned to our good friend, Roel Da honog, E c o s y s t em s M a n a gement Specialist from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 10, for an answer to the mystery of the traveling swallows.

“These are birds belonging to genus Hirundo, the most common of which is the barn s w a l low, com mon ly s e en perched on electric wires and aba ndoned bui ld ings,” he noted. “They are migratory birds. Most of these birds are now returning to their places of origin, where it is now spring time. The Philippines is one of their feeding areas as they travel to other South East Asian countries.”

He said swallows, although not water birds, are included and listed under “Other Species” (to differentiate them from water birds) in the Official Counting Forms of the Asian Water Bird Census conducted every January by the agency to record and analyze population trends of migratory bird species passing through Northern Mindanao.

For 2011, the DENR-10 census for Hirundo species show a count of 225 for two sites; 140 for 2012 in four sites and 141 in five sites for 2013,” Mr. Dahonog said. “Our counting areas include the Sinacaban and Bonifacio wetland (coastal) areas at Misamis Occidental, Mukas and Karomatan (Kolambugan) and Matampay-Bukana (Lala) in Lanao del Norte; Opol, Alubijid, Gingoog and Magsaysay coastal areas for Misamis Oriental and the Pulangi IV hydroelectric power pla nt at Ma ra mag, Bukidnon.”

For 2 013, t he c e n s u s indicates a slight decrease in number of species and individuals counted.

“We attribute the decrease to weather conditions during the counting per iod ,” M r.

Our counting time is daybreak to 10 AM or 3:00 pm to sundown (a uniform schedule for those conducting the census). It was either rainy or cloudy almost throughout the day during the counting period. Migratory birds are usually hiding or take cover under mangrove areas if weather is not good.”

DENR-10 conducts t he Asian Water Bird Census since Northern Mindanao is part of the East Asian–Australasian Flyway, one of the world’s great flyways. A flyway is a flight path used by migratory birds which usually spans continents and oceans.

At its northernmost point, the flyway stretches eastwards from the Taimyr Peninsula in Russia to Alaska. Its southern end covers Australia and New Zealand. Between these two points the flyway covers much of East Asia including China, Japan, Korea, South East Asia (including the Philippines) and western Pacific.

Extending across the most densely populated part of the world, migratory birds face extreme pressures within this flyway which passes through 22 countries with approximately 55 migratory species travelling along it, numbering about five million birds So is some cl i mate or population pressure making the swallows settle down in urban areas instead of returning to their traditional habitats?

Swallows, swifts, and house martins are all summer visitors migrating to and from southern hemispheres. Traditionally the return of the swallows has always been associated with the coming of Spring. They are believed by some communities to bring good luck. This is why farmers do not destroy their nests and swallows can re-use them for many years.

by DENR in partnership with BirdLife International, a global Partnership of conservation organizations which advocates the conservation of birds, their habitats and global biodiversity and works with people for the sustainable use of natura l

resources.

It is the World’s largest partnership of conservation organizations, with over 100 partner organizations. Together, the BirdLife Partnership is the world’s leading authority on the status of birds, their habitats and the issues and problems affecting bird life.

BirdLife International has identified some 2,293 Important Bird Areas (IBAs) in all 28 countries and territories in the Asia region - many important for migratory birds.

The selection of IBAs has been a particularly effective way of identifying conservation priorities. IBAs are key sites for conservation – small enough to be conserved in their entirety and often already part of a protected-area network. They do one (or more) of three things: Hold significant numbers of one or more globally threatened species; Are one of a set of sites that together hold a suite of restricted-range species or biome-restricted species; and have exceptionally large nu mbers of m ig rator y or congregatory species Forty three percent of the region’s IBAs lie wholly outside of formal protected areas. Hence, BirdLife has produced two documents which outlines the threats and provides actions to effectively conserve these sites.

Cebu Pacific f lies from Cagayan de Oro to Zamboanga three times a week every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Frequent flyers along this route can now enjoy the spectacle of the birds on the wire at either destination.

Zamboanga Cit y will host this year’s 9th Philippine Bird Festival organized yearly by the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines on October 4-6, 2013.

Hopefully, we also find out the reasons why the swallows have decided to stay over in these two places instead of flying home to their usual habitats.

“We are also using presence of migratory birds as indicator of the health of our coastal areas. These birds depend on coastal areas for their food while on their long journey,” Mr. Dahonog said. “If the count shows a significant decrease in the number of migratory birds, it most probably indicates that something is wrong in our coastal areas.”

In Maiden/Mother, the artist’s mother is a pensive girl with the bouffant and flipped hairstyle of her youth, in black and white, like in old yearbooks.

A profusion of batik style florals and birds is in her background, like an idea of a life as mother at the back of her head. The flipside, the “mother” side of the painting is that vague idea realized. There are fewer birds in flight on this side but the floral prints persists in the background, traversing both halves of the canvas like a colorful stretched fabric of one woman’s life.

Another parent, the artist’s father shares artistic space with his son, the artist’s brother as a young boy.

JV grateful for Marcoses’ support for his senatorial bid UNITED Nationalist Alliance (UNA) San Juan City Representative JV Ejercito Estrada welcomed the endorsement of Ilocos Norte Governor Imee Marcos and her brother, Senator Bongbong Marcos of his candidacy.

On Thursday, April 4, the Marcoses released a statement declaring support for Ejercito Estrada's senatorial bid and asking their allies in Ilocos region to support him in the May elections.

Two works, Baile and Tapok-Tapok look like parts and pieces of olda party pictures in a time when fedoras were originally stylish and women placed one foot in front of the other as prescribed pose for photos.

“Baile” captures that stretch of time before a man crosses from his side of the ballroom to where a woman is waiting to be asked for a dance.

One side of the canvas shows the women, all modestly skirted below the knees, individual personalities showing only in their prediliction to heels, open-toes, or ankle socks. The bottom side,

on the one hand, shows men, hands in pockets, thighs, or clenched, and the many ways to sit wide or narrow.

Tapok-Tapok could very well be these same men and women in line for refreshments, the bathroom, or the door. The point is how well these works, side by side, can tell stories and how much emotional weight these stories have at its core.

Kelly’s recent works show the highs and limits she’s pushed and taken her romance with oil paint. It is this kind of discipline, work ethic, and consistency that begets fine art mastery.

Villar vows to pass legislation to subsidize farmers if elected

FORMER Las Piñas Representative Cynthia Villar, who is running for senator under the NP-Team PNoy, has vowed to legislate government subsidy for farmers should she make it to the Senate come May polls.

This, she announced following her classification of her priorities, namely, agriculture, overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), women and family, education, livelihood and jobs.

“Since 70 percent of poor Filipinos are in the agriculture sector, the government should subsidize our farmers. Any development in the agricultural sector will reflect on our economy,” Villar told close to 300 farmers and irrigators who attended the First MindanaoWide General Assembly and election of the Mindanao Confederation of Irrigators Association, Inc. (MINCIA), Tuesday, April 02, 2013, at Chali Beach Resort in Cugman, Cagayan de Oro City.

If elected, Villar also vowed to push for a review of the Agriculture and Fisheries Modernization Act (AFMA).

“The requirements of our poor farmers have not been met until now. If I win in the May elections, I will work for efficient and modern post –harvest facilities, farm inputs and irrigation systems for our farmers and irrigators,” she told the delegates from all over Mindanao who were

gathered here.

For now, Villar said she will donate to farmers who want to produce their own organic fertilizers, composting facilities to help them improve on their farming.

Villar said she and her husband Senator Manny Villar have been producing organic fertilizers for seven years now in their home farm in Las Pinas and have been helping farmers in Luzon, Visayas and now in Mindanao by donating composting facilities, which can produce dry organic fertilizers in five day’s time.

The former lawmaker has received the Filipina Entrepreneurs of 2013 by Go Negosyo for her exemplary achievement in providing livelihood projects to indigent Filipinos.

Villar said she has been encouraged to pursue her advocacies by the awards she continue to receive, including the promotion of the barangay-based livelihood centers that she has also established in Las Piñas.

Villar said she has established a total of 35 livelihood projects in Mindanao alone. More than 500 families have been benefiting the same project in Las Pinas and are being duplicated all over the country with a total of 111 pilot centers already established nationwide. (CO)
