he Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation Inc. (Oro Chamber) and Canadian Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines Inc. (CanCham) have signed a Memorandum of Cooperation to increase interaction aimed at fostering bilateral transactions between the two chambers.

“We look forward to increased business between Canada and the City of Cagayan de Oro,” said Julian H. Payne, Canadian Chamber president during signing ceremonies held at a local restaurant Thursday, December 27, 2012.

“This agreement is aimed at increasing the international trade between Canada and Cagayan de Oro,” said Ma. Teresa R. Alegrio, Oro Chamber president who signed in behalf of the local business

group. “We aim to do this by ensuring effective information sharing and technology transfer.”

Oro Chamber Sec. Gen. Lordilie Enjambre said the initial undertaking planned under the agreement is a Canadian Business Forum planned for early next year.

Cagayan de Oro – Rhyan Casiño and Rustie Q uintana, Dire Husi Founding Directors held the first Lantaka Contest, with Parol, and Belen making contest in Artsville museum, (Dire Hu s i In iti ati v e s In c . project in Upper Puerto) on December 23 this year.

Casiño came up with the contests, in keeping Filipino traditions and culture alive and hoped Lantaka; the slowly vanishing seasonal game will be remembered and will still exist for future generations.

According to Mr. Casiño, “Lantaka is the bamboo cannon of the locals, used to make loud cannon noise for the coming of New Year

and Christmas. This was popularized in the rural areas before creation of sophisticated fireworks.”

However the purpose of the founders in conducting the event did not limit to the contests and prizes alone. “This is also our way of celebrating and giving thanks with us winning another award as one of the Ten Accomplished Youth Organization (TAYO) of 2012, said Quintana in actual interview during the event.

Celebrating Alternative Christmas

T

hose who have much can learn everything from those who share without having anything.

Our simple way of sharing our blessings this Christmas especially those street children who have struggled to feel the existence of Christmas and the love they desired too.

The CDO Street Tutorial Advocacy organized an alternative Christmas celebration through Pasko’ng Pakigsadya in the light to make them smile this Christmas with the helped of the Government Association of Certified Accountants, Social Work students of Lourdes College, XU KKP Volunteers, XU Economics Society, XU NSTP students and different volunteers in Cagayan de Oro last December 19,2012.

The unseen smile of the street children were pronounced when they shared the solidarity of friendship during the celebration.

Traditionally, we celebrate Christmas through family reunions, friends, and officemates and even spend expensive parties.

We celebrate because of the nativity of Jesus. It is the time

By Jett Torres of advent season when we are busy preparing our parties, gifts, vacation, family bonding, etc. but the season of advent is the time of preparation of the coming of our savior.

The angels come and sing the joyful songs of praise. A time to celebrate joyful hearts, mends the brokenness of our families, liberate us from our freedom, and engage us for forgiveness.

However, tracing back then the present situation of the society, there are people who are suffered from poverty, abuses, injustices, economic breakdown, corruption, child labor, political inconveniences, natural disasters and a lot of suffering.

How our fellow Filipinos celebrates their Christmas when they are experiencing their own struggles of misery?

How can we bridge them to mend this brokenness of their hearts? Are we doing something to embrace their happiness?

These are some of the questions that we need to ponder this Christmas.

In the spirit of Christmas we will always share our gesture of generosity to our fellowmen.

We always humble our hearts to the poor and open our hands to help. The joy of the heart is coming from the humble servant and the happiness of the self is coming from the act of generosity.

The essence of Christmas is about love. Let me borrow from the thoughts of Camilo Marivoet that love makes no demands, it only invites.

Genuine love is unselfish. It is very attentive to people. Love makes no demands on them, it does not order people around, does not use them for our own purposes.

Love is at the service of other people. Thus, showing our genuine love to others is a selfless desire to make them human.

This is how Christmas all about.

Let us always remember that through our deepest sincerity to love each other especially the children who are deprived from this love is our way of comforting the brokenness of their hearts.

Our greatest hope is to bridge them from the inconveniences and allow them to value of the gift of life.

According to Wikipedia, there are now around 400,000 Filipino Canadians in Canada, making them the third largest Asian Canadian group after the Indian and Chinese communities.

They are also the largest Southeast Asian group in the country. Between the years of 2001 and 2006, the Filipino community in Canada grew from 308,575 to 410,695 or a growth of about 33%, compared to the rest of Canada, which only grew, by about 5%. On average, Canada received about 20,500 Filipino immigrants every year from 2001 to 2006. Assuming this growth rate continued, the Filipino-Canadian populace was expected to hit 500,000 by 2010.

In 2010, the Philippines were the largest source country for immigrants to Canada. There are approximately 7,500 Canadians residing in the Philippines. The Philippines is now Canada’s main supplier of skilled immigrants, with over 500,000 Filipinos already working across Canada.

Total trade between the two countries reached C$680.14 in the first six months of 2012, and totalled C$1.456 billion for the whole of 2011, according to the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. In 2011, Canadian merchandise exports to the Philippines were valued at CAD $554.6 million, while Canadian imports from the Philippines stood at CAD $915.8 million.

Just last month, Xinhua news agency reported

President Benigno S. Aquino III and visiting Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper agreed to further increase trade between the two countries. At a joint press meeting after their bilateral talks, both leaders stressed the importance of raising bilateral trade, which reached about $1.5 billion in 2011.

"Our government is taking actions to aggressively expand commercial relations with the entire Asia Pacific region. We're doing so to help create jobs, economic growth and a better quality of life both in Asia and in Canada," Harper said.

"The Philippines has thus become an important economic partner for Canada. In 2011, bilateral trade reached nearly $1.5half billion. Our hope is to build on this strong and expanding commercial relationship," the Canadian leader added. " We l o o k f o r w a r d to increasing trade and investment with Canada," Aquino said in response.

Canada's trade and investment relationship with the Philippines spans many sectors.

Canadian companies with expertise in information and communications technology, aerospace and defence, power generation (renewable energy), and natural resource extraction are in a position to take advantage of new opportunities within these sectors. In addition, the market for agricultural products in the Philippines continues to be robust, with significant potential for growth within the processed food and beverage subsector and franchises.

Oro Chamber helps thousands of Sendong victims in 2012 ~ Alegrio

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY - The Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation Inc. (Oro Chamber) bared substantial accomplishments for year 2012 with emphasis on membership welfare and corporate social responsibilities.

Outgoing Oro Chamber President Ma. Theresa Alegrio bared that foremost of the association’s latest efforts centered on helping victims of calamities and typhoons.

by Typhoon Sendong, Oro Chamber’s relief efforts helped more than 5,000 internally displaced persons (IDP’s).

Some 1,400 families in Iligan City received relief goods, including 2.350 employees of its member companies in Iligan and Cagayan de Oro. Over 4,000 families who suffered from Typhoon Sendong were beneficiaries of Oro Cha mber’s water distribution.

DA, COAID discuss ADC to prompt market development for agri-based products project developments

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY - With the intent to assess the developments and lay out plans for an effective implementation of the Korean Rural Community Corporation-assisted project in Malagana, Claveria, Misamis Oriental, over 15 delegates from South Korea convened with the representatives from the Department of Agriculture Central Office and Regional Field Unit 10, and from the local government units of the municipality of Claveria and the province of Misamis Oriental.

for the inauguration of the pilot project before the year ends was moved to give way for further renovations of both the processing facility and the community center.

The delegation which are mostly experts and academes in various fields of agriculture headed

by Dr. Yanghoon Song, Director of the Center for Overseas Assistance and International Development (COAID) of Chungbuk National University in South Korea shared their expertise and experiences in running a rice processing facility (RPC) and their schemes used in their operation which is applicable for running a corn processing center (CPC).

In a related development, another Korean-assisted project is to be established in the municipality of Claveria which is seen to open opportunities that will help generate income and employment for the locals. The conduct of the Technology Transfer Project for Microbial/ Organic Fertilizer and Mushroom Cultivation will showcase oyster mushroom and other medicinal mushroom production technologies. This is implemented through the joint collaboration of KOICA-COAID and the Department of Agriculture through the Claveria Experimental Station and the Misamis Oriental State College of Agriculture and Technology.

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – In accordance with its function of promoting agri-based products in the local and international markets the Department of Agriculture – Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Division (DA-AMAD) conducted a market forum with local small and medium agricultural product processors in Region 10 on December 18, 2012.

The forum serves as an information campaign on the services being offered by the Agribusiness Development Center (ADC).

The ADC is under the Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Service (AMAS)

which serves as a one stop information shop for agribusiness stakeholders as to market and price updates.

The center also conducts training services that will enable agri-fishery based producers to develop their products and enable them to compete in both local and international markets.

Furthermore, the ADC has an Export Showroom which provides a venue for small and medium agri-entrepreneurs and processors to promote and market their products that are of export quality. It also has an Activity Center which showcases products that are for market testing and linkage.

The ADC also participates in international trade fairs and selling missions which also spurs interest among potential buyers then providing better opportunities for agri- entrepreneurs to expand their market by directly linking them with potential buyers and investors locally and internationally.

NNC hoists ‘Green Banner’ and Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholars in regional nutrition awards

T

he National Nutrition Council Region 10 held the Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony,December 21, 2012 at Grand Caprice Restuarant, Limketkai Center, Lapasan Cagayan de Oro City.

The success of the local government units inspires Nutrition Program Coordinator Zenaida T.Tondares to already look forward to the year ahead in her welcome speech “next year, hopefully, it will be a good year for us at the national level... based on the good performances of these local government units, we will have two candidates for CROWN awards, one for City level and one for provincial level” The recipient LGU of the Green Banner Award for three consecutive years is automatically recommended by the Regional Nutrition Committee to be awarded the Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (CROWN) award by the NNC at national level.

Tondares also pointed out the importance of the nutrition advocacy, “to make the most of the event that we have today, we have an opportunity to introduce to everyone the Regional Ten Revised Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos (NGF), which will be our commitment for nutrition advocacy from this time on... we are also organizing our media group, so that we will have a potent advocacy group who can partner with us strongly in promoting good nutrition.”

The media group is dubbed as the Media Advocates for Nutrition in Governance [MANGO DIEZ].

Keynote speaker, Director Aristides Concepcion Tan, the Regional Director of the Department of Health Region10 and Chairman of the Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) X recognizes the importance of the Regional Nutrition awards in his opening statement, “this occasion is really appropriate to recognize the outstanding performers in the implementation of nutrition programs in their own

respective areas” Director Tan adds that “the Millennium Development Goal number one which is the eradication of poverty and extreme hunger… prolonged hunger by nature will lead to malnutrition, and malnutrition is considered one of the main factors leading to illnesses, in short malnutrition is the root cause of health problems” Tan also inspires everyone with his statement: “nutrition is very important at the first stage of life”.

He also further emphasized that in giving proper nutrition at this stage of life, Filipinos will have low risk having lifestyle diseases.

The awarding ceremony was also graced by Congressman Maximo Bautista Rodriquez Jr. of ABANTE MINDANAO party list.

Congressman Rodriguez pointed out the need for additional incentives for Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) and Barangay Health Worker (BHWs) and committed support to pertinent efforts along this line in the incoming years (2013) for the region.

National Nutrition Council Region 10 presented this year’s Green Banner Awardees (GBA) as a result of the Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Plan Implementation 2012 conducted by the inter agency Regional Evaluation Team (RET X).

Misamis Oriental grabs the GBA for the Provincial Level; Valencia City in Bukidnon takes home the GBA for the City Level, and Maramag, Bukidnon for the Municipal Level.

The NNC X’s Green Banner Award is also given to the Barangay Level starting off with the Province of Misamis Oriental. The City of Gingoog is honored through Brgy. Kibuging, Brgy. Talisay, Brgy.

Lunao, and Brgy. 19; also awarded to Brgy. Dinagsaan of the Municipality of Salay, Brgy. Malanang of the Municipality of Opol, Brgy.

Katipunan of the Municipality of Villanueva and three from the Municipality of Balingasag namely: Barangays Poblacion 1, Mandangoa and Binitinan.

The list of Green Banner Award-

ees for barangay level continues with Valencia City, Bukidnon – Barangays Concepcion, Laligan, Tugaya, San Carlos, and Nabag-o, Malabalay City’s Brgys 1, 4, 10, Sto. Niño and Patpat.

Also in Bukdinon, the Municipality of Maramag produced three awardees: Barangays Panalsalan, North Poblacion and Danggawan. The Municipality of Manolo Fortich Barangays: Dahilayan, Sankanan, and Mantibugao. For Municipality of Pangantucan: Barangays Concepcion and Madaya.

The Provincial Green Banner Awardees are Province of Misamis Oriental-for the Municipality of Salay, and the Province of BukidnonMunicipality of Maramag.

Special awards were also presented to the city of Ozamiz for having garnered the 2nd year CROWN maintenance award at national level and municipality of Opol, Misamis Oriental for having the 1st year CROWN maintenance award also at national level for 2012.

Eight (8) contenders in the Search for Regional Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholars (ROBNS) were also awarded with cash and plaques, 1st Ms Arlyn C.Bongcas of Brgy. 1, Malaybalay City; 2nd Ms. Maricel F. Oca of Carangan, Ozamis City; 3rd Ms Paciana B. Dombase of Concepcion, Valencia City; 4th Ms. Serina Saw-ig of Dinagsaan, Salay, Misamis Oriental; 5th Ms Gemma O. Ligan of Panalsalan, Maramag, Bukidnon; 6th Ms. Marites A. Logong of Kibuging, Gingoog City; 7th Ms. Marife Mag-usara of Sta. Cruz, Tangub City; and 8th Ms. Annallee Macabenlar of Agusan, Cagayan de Oro City.

The success of the event was capped with the launching of the NNC’s media advocacy group MANGO DIEZ where selected members of the Cagayan de Oro media affixed their signatures in the unveiling of revised 10 Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos (NGF) to signify their commitment in promoting the NNC’s nutrition advocacies and programs in local governance.

By Archibald Batica, LEO III, Bukidnon Provincial Field Office Quezon, Bukidnon - Project Angel Tree literally lighted a child’s home in Barangay Mibando, Quezon, Bukidnon.

Through the generosity of the First Bukidnon Electric Cooperative, Inc. (FIBECO) management, which is one of the benefactors of the “Pamaskong Handog-Alay sa Kapwa 2012” Angel Tree Project spearheaded by the LGU-Quezon, the longtime dream of a child became a reality.

This extraordinar y Christmas “wish” was written on a piece of paper collected by the PESO, Ms. Judith Las Piñas during the Project Launching on 6 December 2012 at the lobby of the Quezon Municipal Hall, and handed to FIBECO. Without hesitation, Mr.

Oscar Quimque, FIBECO General Manager immediately sent a team of company electricians and effected the house wiring and meter tapping installation to the house of Janelle Postrero, 11 years old and a Grade 5 pupil at the Quezon Central Elementary School (QCES).

Mrs. Jeaneva Postrero, Janelle’s mother was tearyeyed when asked for a short word of thanks during the programme.

She said that the gift was unexp e c te d, having experienced electricity in their home for the first time.

Crowd’s reaction makes noises like Lantaka who used to be fireworks for the local and with the overlooking view of Puerto especially at night adds-up to people’s excitement to the event.

“The surroundings are wonderful and they were able to preserve the trees.

They really took care of it with the breathtaking overlooking view of Puerto, said Panganiban.”

The event does not only bring a smile to the people in Puerto who attended but it also touches a young artist’s heart being able to perform.

“I’m very happy Rhyan Casiño invited me in this event because I experienced a lot of new things and I had fun, said Emmanuel Panganiban.”

CEBU PHILHARMONIC & UUU JAPANESE ORCHESTRA to perform at Rodelsa Hall

T

his event is perhaps the most significant post-Valentine date ever. Two days after Valentine’s Day, all roads will lead to Rodelsa Hall for a concert like no other.

For the first time, the Cebu Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO), Unites the World Project Orchestra of Japan with pianist Rudolf Golez and conductor Prof. Rey Abellana will come together to share the best of world-class music to Cagayanons in a one night special performance this coming February 16, 2013, 7:30 PM at the Rodelsa Hall of Liceo de Cagayan University.

Almost 50 musicians will share the same stage and play wellloved classics from the great composers like the Radetsky March by Johan Strauss, Barber of Seville by Rossini and Rachmaninov Piano

Concerto by Sergei Rachmaninov among others. Featured pianist is Cagayan de Oro’s pride, Rudolf Pelaez Golez, one of the most sought after international Filipino piano concert artists.

He recently toured the US and was part of the delegation to the Philippine Days in Russia with a rousing performance in St. Petersburg and Moscow.

CPO is one of the youngest and busiest orchestras in the country. Together with the Japanese orchestra UUU, they have mounted several concerts in Cebu City in the hopes of bringing classical music closer to the hearts of the people.

Aside from the great music, this concert is in celebration of the founding Anniversary of Liceo U as well as a benefit show for

the environmental advocacies of the university implemented through her partner institution, Safer River Life Saver Foundation.

Portion of the ticket proceeds will be donated to the foundation to help sustain the projects they are implementing for the river communities along the banks of the Cagayan de Oro River.
