Cynthia Villar guests in Koronadal’s celebration Former Las Piñas Representative, and Villar Foundation Managing Director Cynthia Villar guests in the culminating program of the 13th Hinugyaw Festival and 73rd Chartered Day of Koronadal City, South Cotabato, Januar y 10.

The week-long festival kickedoff, Januar y 4, with the unveiling of the national historical marker and wreath-laying at the shrine of the 17 Koronadeleño martyrs, who were massacred during the Japanese occupation of the area.

Installation of the marker at the burial site of the 17 martyrs inside Koronadal Central Elementar y School 1 has the sanction of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines.

One of the highlights of the celebration is the Korona Festival, a combination street dancing, mardi gras, and parade of crowns, takes on the perspective of sprawling Koronadal City at the landlocked valley surrounded by the Quezon

and Roxas mountain ranges, giving it the impression of a crown jewel.

Mrs. Villar then travelled to Buluan, Province of Maguindanao to visit & attend the Regional Forum of FREEDOM AGREEMENT on BANGSAMORO (FAB).

Among Villar’s contributions to Mindanao is the recently launched Coconet Weaving Factor y in Sta. Elena, Iligan City where the Villar Foundation donated a decorticating machine for use in the livelihood program for Sendong victims.

Also in Iligan City, Villar donated P1M for the Sendong Memorial Park in Hinaplanon and a sculpture of a 9-year-old girl sur vivor on a log designed

by National Artist Julie Lluch.

December 30, Centrio Mall hosted an event showcasing local artists at the Centrio Garden to celebrate New Year for the Cagayan de Oro market to boost customers’ relationship and bring families together to celebrate with the interesting performances by local musical groups.

“We set up an artistic event with lights, music and entertainers that all people can enjoy and appreciate especially families,” said Justine Tiro, Centrio Mall Marketing Supervisor.

Centrio Mall also partnered with Rhyan Casiño, the organizer, and Dire Husi Executive Director for the whole event.

“They hired us to perform and in return we provide talents for them. As an artist we really need corporate partners, like what an English Poet John Donne, said, no man is an island. I’m very blessed that malls in the city are recognizing local talents,” said Casiño.

Centrio’s Dazzling Night Eye-friendly garden with the two acacia trees and elegant, well lighted stage dazzled the crowd as the celebration unfolds.

Taking center stage are Tonic Hues String Ensemble, Ap oi C D O, Vit a l S i g n s Acoustic, Group Hug Band, Artchada Art Group and Dire Husi Human Statues; Axelrose Casilac, Erwin Reyes, Paolo Talampas, and Rodolfo Eroy.

The event started with a performance by the Vital Signs Acoustic group, with lead singer Winset Jacot, 22, a Nursing graduate of Liceo U, who gathered everyone around the stage with her appealing, calm, enigmatic voice.

Vitals Signs Acoustic group members, are Wences G. Llamis and percussionist EJ Emmanuel L. Gallego turned the night’s event into a soothing place people enjoyed.

“I feel amazing that people liked our performance! The set-up of the location of the event and the stage is unexpected. Tonight is very special and we’re very happy” said Jacot.

The newly-created band called “Group Hug,” rocked t h e g ard e n an d t re at e d everyone to great music. The members are lead singer/ guitarist, Randy Amper Relos, from Opol, Dennis Salagia and Rustie Quintana.

As they took the stage, they treated the audience to a rendition of “In the Light

by DC Talk, Hello Again, Road to Zion, and Without You I would Surely Die by Petra Rock Band.

“Together with my band, we gave our best tonight; I was having fun as I sang and performed on the stage and seeing my son as one of the audience who appreciates what I do is very inspiring.

My son reminds me of my wife who savors every moment looking at me singing,” said Relos.

Group Hug Band didn’t just entertain their audience but also gave an in-depth perspective to every song they played. “The message I want to relay to everyone through the songs we played tonight is that there’s a new way of thinking.

We reconcile the positive and the negative thoughts and bring it to harmony so you won’t run from the challenges in life,” he added.

Dream Bridging Celebration “It’s our 3rd time to be invited in Centrio Mall. We hope it would continue as this helps us a lot and we’re aiming to record songs and to have an album for the incoming years” states Jacot.

Winset Jacot, also shared that the key to success is to keep believing that you’ll make it.

“I’m privileged to be able to sing this tonight, as this song is for the youth, to show them love.” Quintana says.

As the proprietor, Tonic Hues Music Studio’s Anthony Schubert R ara, who also teaches Violin, longed to show Kagay-anons their talents, so people can appreciate violin players and appreciate classical music. “We are happy that they are watching us; we also acknowledge the Ayala Centrio management for allowing us to play here for the 2nd time,” said Mr. Rara.

T

he first ever Coffee Table Book of the National Statistics Office is launched at January 11, 2013 at the Eaton Hall of the Mallberry Suites of this city.

The coffee table book is authored by Dr. Salvador A. Aves, Regional Director of the National Statistics Office, Region 10. One of the highlights of the book launch is the turn over of the copy of the book to the Administrator of the National Statistics Office, Hon. Carmelita N. Ericta, followed by a message.

The NSO R-10 Coffee Table Book titled “The Pursuit of Excellence: Defining Extraordinary Moments” is startlingly simple in its concept, but very rich in substance, and even richer in its vision to share to fellow public servants the commitment to serve above its given mandate- the commitment to do extraordinary things.

This inspired Dr. Aves to conceptualize the coffee table book.

Unlike the books that Dir. Aves published in the past few years which are mostly about civil registration laws and leadership and management in public service, this chronicles the culture of innovation and how the team accepted the challenge to think out of the box and to innovate concepts instead of adhering to the status quo.

It captures how NSO Region 10 has committed itself to a paradigm shift in public service, and how it has sustained for 19 consecutive years its success in obtaining first place in the Annual National Field Awards.

lobe President and CEO Ernest Cu expressed bullish prospects about the growing ubiquity of mobile phones in the Philippines, with mobile set to change the landscape of traditional advertising in the country.

As keynote speaker at the 2012 Mobile Marketing Conference of the Internet and Mobile Marketing Association of the Philippines (IMMAP) with his speech “How Mobile is Changing the Advertising Industry”, Cu cited the strong potential of mobile as an effective medium for brands to reach target audiences. “ The mobile phone has clearly taken great prominence in the human value chain. Time Magazine’s Mobility Poll revealed that out of 5,000 respondents across 8 countries, 68% sleep with their mobile phones next to them, and 66% would rather take their mobile phones to work instead of lunch,” said Cu. Citing an example closer to home, Cu revealed that in the Philippines, 9 out of 10 people own mobile phones, putting mobile phone penetration at its highest peak compared to any other form of medium such as TV. “Indeed, mobile is the way to go to connect with and engage today’s consumers, as well as to create a rich consumer experience that goes beyond traditional marketing,” Cu confirmed.

T h e d ay t h at Ju an remembered leaving his mom and pop’s quiet nest, striving hard to begin and stand up on his own, was his first baptism of fire. With great delight he struck out by himself, coming face to face with his own true worth – “be financially responsible,” they said. Then one of those days, Juan met this beauty, the girl of all his dreams. He fell head over heels, spent money to please, just to capture this young girl’s whims. Then in one of those days, they did get hitched, and the two came together as one. Then the kids had to come and the word “budget” in haste found its way into the language of Juan. One by one off to school they all did go and “budget” got bigger yet tighter. With school fees higher Juan finally crunched, settling then for less than the best. As the last of the brood left school’s hallowed halls, running scat free from the lair, the couple at last did manage to catch a little bated breath of their own. After heaving a sigh, a big sigh of relief, soon it got to be oh so clear – their minds much blunter, their bodies much weaker, and retirement seemed nearer looming out of the corner.

Time came when Juan’s earnings went short, and shorter it went still till it’s gone. Yet there he lay patiently waiting, hoping against hope for that grace called “pension.” But lo and behold, he did soon realize what he thought was enough for the real was not! Forced to buckle his belt much tighter, a life lived in much

less comfort – lived to make ends meet, for dole-outs came so scarce, and never with quite some ease. For the grownup kids had some young of their own – mouths to feed, bodies to clothe, souls to put in shelters.

So goes a tale that seemed oh so tall, yet Juan’s could’ve been so stark better! A tale so common to countless of millions, so much it’s taken for granted. At each and every turn of the life of Juan, good foresight and preparation could have spelled that great a difference between pain and much, much comfort.

This should be what a good plan is – a helpful financial program – gets you where you should be every stage of your life, your financial goals attended. Ways and means you arrange, for expenses do come in due time, wellprepared or not. As in Aesop’s old tale, the ants toiled so hard for provisions to stock for winter. And all through the while the grasshopper just went, so naïve and horsing around. When the snowy days came the grasshopper went begging whilst the ants had food a-plenty. In life, each of us have our choices to make – through the storms we can be ant or grasshopper. Thereafter much of the outcome is ours – either we rejoice in abundance and comfort, or suffer in scarcity and pain.

Globe partners with MozillaPH for RP leg of FireFox OS App Days

L

eading telecommunications company Globe Telecom has partnered with the Mozilla Philippines Community (MozillaPH) for the Manila leg of Firefox OS App Days, a worldwide set of over 20 hack days to be hosted by 24 cities from January 19 through February 2, 2013.

Philippines and Indonesia are the only Southeast Asian countries included in the list.

Firefox OS App Days aims to showcase

Mozilla's open source operating system for the mobile web and to teach tech developers how to create mobile applications for the Firefox OS. With Firefox OS, developers can easily create cross-browser applications for the web and portable devices such as smartphones and tablets. This means more opportunities to come up with stimulating and interactive websites as well as better and more powerful applications.

"We want to

reach out to both individuals and teams of developers, mostly young professionals and students not only in Metro Manila and its outlying areas but also in other parts of the country, particularly Cebu and Davao.

EMENO Trio–

Making Melodies in the Heart of CDO

K

agay-anons are innate music lovers. In almost every corner of this city, there are show bands, videoke bars, acoustic bars, etc.

All of these are evidence that we breathe anything that has something to do with music and entertainment.

Most of the time, Kagay-anons celebrate artists from the national or international scene.

Perhaps this is because most people have not realized that this city also has its own local artists that are of the same caliber as national and international artists.

This city is actually a gold mine of talents that

have far too often been underrated.

One of the local artists noteworthy is the trio that calls themselves “EMENO”.

This group is composed of one male (Jeremiah “Miah” Torayno) and t w o f e m a l e s ( No v a Mae Tantoy and Oasia Glenndale Aclo). The group’s name is derived from a playful mix of the member’s nicknames.

On stage, the trio has a cute and child-like appeal to the audience, but as they begin to voice the first note, one will clearly hear that their skill is beyond their age.

Torayno, Tantoy and Aclo each have their own trophies to bear.

Singing as early as 5 years old; each bagged championships from various singing competitions here in CDO and in the regional level as well.

EMENO Trio has a wide-range of genres in their repertoire. They bring out soulful melodies from the old and new hits to Broadway classics, pop, dance and rap.

The trio is a member of the DreamBoard Artists Society, which is a nonprofit organization of talented artists in the city.

The group is under the mentorship of Cagayan de Oro’s Premiere Talent Mentor and Voice Coach, Mr. Donie Magallanes Galigao.

CDO celebrates feast of the Black Nazarene Story and photos by Vincent Tom Udasco

J

anuary 9, 2013 marks the fifth year of the annual Traslacíon of the replica of the Black Nazarene of the Minor Basilica of Quiapo here in Cagayan de Oro. Devotees from Cagayan de Oro and nearby provinces in the region flocked to the city’s Lapasan Highway at around 2 o’clock in the afternoon despite the gloomy weather and occasional rain showers.

The Traslacíon or the procession started at 3 o’clock, with its starting point near Fatima Chapel opposite Capitol University Medical Center (CUMC).

The Black Nazarene’s carriage, drawn by the Hijos Del Nazareno de Cagayan de Oro, was escorted by the Philippine National Police (PNP) spearheaded by the newly appointed Cagayan de Oro City Police Office Director - Police Senior Superintendent Raul A. Benitez.

The procession drew a multitude of devotees as it passed along CM Recto Avenue, turned right to Market City in Agora, onto Corrales Avenue, heading towards Julio Pacana streets and then towards Velez Street junction, where series of

fireworks display were set off, and Honor Guards from Southern Philippines College ROTC paid homage to the passing of the Black Nazarene along their campus.

The Black Nazarene and devotees proceeded to turn left at Antonio Luna Street, heading towards Osmeña Street, and turned left to Claro M. Recto and finally towards the Jesus Nazareno Parish.

At about 8 o’clock in the evening, the Callajeron arrives at its home, with loud cheers and cries of “Viva!” coming from the crowd.

The icon, being the second replica of the original Black Nazarene, is now housed permanently at the Jesus Nazareno Parish in Lapasan, this city.

Mo n s i g n o r E l m e r Abacahin recalls during the 7AM mass at the Saint Augustine Metropolitan Cathedral, that in 2008, the Jesus Nazareno Parish requested to borrow the robe of the Black Nazarene of the Minor Basilica in Quiapo.

It turned out that archdiocese in Quiapo was not only sending the Black Nazarene’s robe to Cagayan de Oro. They were actually sending the replica of the

‘Callejeron’ in time for the 50th Jubilee Celebration of the Jesus Nazareno Parish.

A simultaneous Traslacion or transferring of the Black Nazarene was held here in Cagayan de Oro, and in the city of Manila, every year since then.

Then called as Black Nazarene of Quiapo, the replica is now called the Black Nazarene of Cagayan de Oro. Escorted by Cagayan de Oro’s very own Hijos del Nazareno de Cagayan de Oro, the traslacion of the Black Nazarene proceeded with veneration coming from all of walks of life shouting ‘Viva!’ here and there.

This writer was awed by the mere sight of the sorrowful Jesus Christ heaving a cross. From His coming out from the Saint Augustin Metropolitan Cathedral to His entrance at the Jesus Nazareno Parish, stayed close by, feeling every minute of it.

When Weather Matters

T

hese days, it's not enough to look out the window.

With the recent state of the world climate where unpredictable weather patterns and never before experienced weather changes are taking effect, it is high time to take notice of everyday weather.

One can never be too confident of what one sees and feels about his immediate environment because recently, the mood of Mother Nature is getting very tricky. Ignoring weather news is no longer an option, it best to be informed all the time. For you and your family's safety and security.

What then can we do as ordinary citizens in order to be in the know of what’s the latest weather update? Be prepared just in case it becomes more than just a rain of cats and dogs.

1. Wait for the weather update on TV or Radio and better listen intently.

The country's weather bureau PAGASA regularly issues weather bulletins and are being shared by our local broadcast media.

These updates include basic information of the current status of the weather around the country.

These advisories also inform on potential risks in certain severe or extreme conditions.

2. Browse the weather on your

local newspaper.

Although this is not as accurate as the instant updates broadcast over the radio or television, a general look on daily or weekly weather conditions can be found through your favorite local and national broadsheets.

3. Turn to social media.

Your FB and Twitter accounts serve more than just your daily scoop of gossip. They are now the go-to medium on weather.

Try browsing the various Facebook pages dedicated to Philippine weather and you will get vital information in a flash.

PAGASA also has a Twitter account that you can follow to make sure that you receive their updates straight to your cellphones or tablet PCs. These two internet media came in handy in recent calamities that struck the nation.

Updates, cry for assistance and pleas of support went pouring during the height of such tragedies such as Typhoons Ondoy, Sendong and Pablo.

The interactive nature of this medium allowed for immediate response and quick on-thedot updates on a regional and national scale.

4. Setup the weather app on your gadgets.

There are now free apps on the app store and android market that are customized

for the local weather. You can click the various buttons on these apps to know the details on what's happening within the Philippine Area of Responsibility.

These apps also share information such as current climate, updates from the National Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) and from PAGASA. One useful app you can download for free is Project NOAH. 5. Save important hotlines on your gadgets.

There is nothing wrong in being prepared.

In order to report or receive immediate concerns during dangerous weather conditions, it is best to have in handy the hotlines of the nearest emergency rescue units near you.

You may also include the numbers to call in case of power outages and water supply interruptions.

I hope these five basic tips will help you in becoming more familiar with the weather we have right now and respond appropriately.

So before you head out the door, better do a rain check and see what's up with the weather!

ver since my college years I Have always been busy doing “my craft” in the field I’m gifted with, remembering those times I said to myself hopefully after finishing my studies in Masscommunications I can land a job that is similar to what I was doing then, a mixture of music and arts but right after graduation things didn’t go as planned.

It took me almost Two years to finally stick to the company am with.

I remember the time crying along Divisoria after a job interview , not because I didn’t pass rather I was accepted and I was asked to submit my requirements but it just didnt feel right, that is why I cried.

Thinking about it now, makes me laugh but I guess It was a learning point because my passion drives me

to do what I do.

Wandering from one job to another and still doing a lot in “freelance terms” kept me occupied.

So I learned in other areas as well even in “food retail business”.

I guess this was God’s way of training me how to handle money but I didn’t last long because it was not my field.

Never will I get into a business again that is not inline with my skills, gift and passion.

It looked simple at first but in the long run it became a routine that I didn’t like so in the end I couldn’t endure it’s hardships.

The calling of being a musician was always there eversince but the calling to be a voice teacher was not once an option until I got into the school where I am now.

Never did I even thought I would make a

career out of teaching.

I thought I knew much of myself...wrong again, God opened my eyes through the “kulit” kids and enjoyed my first summer class with them until now.

Few days back I tried to evaluate all the things I’m doing and I discovered that everything is connected even my Masscom days.

All the while I thought, I will not be able to use again my skills in film, photography, theater ... voila my school is

gearing towards that development .

Moreover I realized that God answered my prayer, I’m living out the job I wanted ever since.

Morethan the calling, God revealed to me that it’s my mission to help others in their gifting especially in the younger generation.

Developing them not only in thier vocal skills but attitude wise as well .

It’s true indeed in this school “PROIS... every child and TEACHER shines”

3 brgy food terminals launched in Kinoguitan town

inoguitan, Misamis Oriental – FUELED to provide an alternative market for farmers’ produce through dire c t market ing , t he Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office 10 ( DA- 1 0 ) t h rou g h t h e Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Division (AMAD) has launched three Barangay Food Terminal (BFT) projects here last week.

E ach amounting to P300,000, the BFT projects were formally turnedover to the Salicapawan K i n o g u i t a n F a r m e r ’s Association (SaKFA) in Brgy. Salicapawan; Calubo Agrarian Reform FarmerBeneficiaries Multi-Purpose Cooperative (CARFB-MPC) in Brgy. Calubo; and the Bolisong Unified Holistic Industries Cooperative (BUHI Coop) in Brgy.

According to Cora E. Balabat, BFT Focal Person, the project is primarily intended in bringing food nearer to the people. In

particular, she said that it seeks to provide affordable, safe, nutritious and quality food products, wherein farmer-beneficiaries would have greater access to be directly linked to their respective consumers.

In effect, this would warrant increased income among farm-producers by reducing trade layers as well as guaranteed stable prices and supply of food commodities in the market.

Additionally, the BFT project fosters community involvement among group members with the possible creation of employment opportunities for food repacking, processing and delivery to retail outlets.

With the newly installed BFTs in the municipality of Kinoguitan, Balabat ended by posing a challenge to the farmer-beneficiaries, that is, to properly and sustainably run the project into a successful one.

After six months of operating the BFT, she reported, that the benefiting association and cooperatives

may qualify in the Search for Outstanding Food Terminal, wherein P500,000 awaits for the winner.

For the ye ar 2012, DA-10 through AMAD has awarded a total of 31 BFTs throughout Northern Mindanao.

Also in attendance du r i ng t h e tu r n - ove r ceremony were the local government unit staff, headed by Municipal Mayor Danilo A. Lagbas, Jr. and Vice Mayor Constantino S. Llesis, Sr., Sanggunian Bayan members, SaKFA, CARFB-MPC and BUHI Coop officers and members, DA-10 staff, among others.

The ceremonial cutting of ribbon signals that the BFT projects of the DA will mobilize the economy in the municipality of Kinoguitan.

Prior the awarding of the project to its beneficiaries, the department has provided technical assistance during its pre-operation while also handing-in P200,000 for the equipment, including a chest freezer, chiller, cash register and digital weighing scale and P100,000 for the initial operational capital.

2013 National Year of Rice launched in MisOr T he year 2013 has been declared as the National Year of Rice (NYR) by President Benigno S. Aquino, III under Proclamation No. 494 which was signed on October 18, 2012. Carrying the theme: “Sapat na Bigas, Kaya ng Pinas”, the declaration is the government’s campaign of intensifying its advocacy in achieving rice self-sufficiency.

Part of this promotion is also to enjoin the producers, policy makers,

consumers and other stakeholders to help attain the government’s ultimate goal of food security and sufficiency. With this at hand, it will encourage the public to become responsible rice consumers.

The province of Misamis Oriental in Northern Mindanao has formally announced the above said proclamation during the opening of its 83rd founding anniversary on January 7, 2013 at the capitol grounds, Cagayan de Oro City.

Highlighting the activity is the showcasing of the agri-fishery products from the different municipalities tagged as the Tabo sa Umahan carrying the theme “ Agrikulturang MisamisnonMalaumon ug Malahutayon.”

Department of Agriculture - 10 (DA-10) Regional Executive Director Lealyn A. Ramos urged the Misamisnons to support the campaign.

“Let us eat the right amount of food and

reduce rice wastage. I am encouraging each and everyone to also try other staple food such as corn, root crops and bananas.

One way or another we are helping our country achieve rice sufficiency and do away from rice importations.”

On the other hand, Misamis Oriental Governor Oscar S. Moreno through the aggies department of the province accepted the challenge in supporting the government with its advocacy.

The unveiling of the 2013 NYR logo, headed by DA-10 Dir. Ramos, MisOr Gov. Moreno with the participation of Akbayan Chairperson Ana Theresia Hontiveros-Baraquel and the municipal mayors in the province, has denoted acceptance of responsibility in rallying the NYR campaign in their respective municipalities. Rudolf Golez to perform with 2 orchestras in 1 concert

I

n a rare musical feat, international Filipino pianist Rudolf Pelaez Golez collaborates with the C ebu Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) and the Unites the World Orchestra (UUU) of Japan in a one night concert at Rodelsa Hall on February 16, 2013, 7:30 in the evening.

This will be the second time that Rudolf will be teaming up with an orchestra for a special performance at the renowned performance hall.

The first time was with t h e M a n i l a S y mp h o ny Orchestra (MSO) in August of 2010 as par t of the celebration of the birth centenary of the cofounder of Liceo de Cagayan University, Madame Elsa Pelaez.

collaboration marks another m i l e s ton e a s h e te ams up with two formidable orchestras in a very rare musical extravaganza.

Kagay-anons will be in for a grand treat as they perform musical pieces such as Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto no. 2, Overture to the Barber of Seville and Radetzky March.

Being a staunch environmentalist and a philanthropist, this concert is also a way for Rudolf and his fellow musicians to raise funds for the benefit of Safer River life Saver Foundation, Inc. (SRLSFI), the university’s flagship unit tasked to implement the various community outreach programs and sustainability projects of the river barangays along the Cagayan River.

HROUGHOUT the years of living in a coastal community, some of us may have left a mark of life in a beach. Others who have been there since childhood and have spent their lives growing up as a par time fisherman or shell collector in the salvage shores have resigned their fate to die in their place of birth.

Many of the landed whose children were educated have since gone to the big cities to seek employment and professionals have started to shift back the fruits of their labor to their hometown changing the landscapes with beautiful houses and concrete buildings.

While others who

have worked or stayed overseas may have chosen to return home either to invests on lands or seek public office. Those who have gone long and are now in the twilight of their lives may contemplate to comeback and retire in a coastal place blessed with the amenities of life in harmony with nature.

Life in a beach in Talisayan has memories which many years ago are remembered with a blast of dynamite fishing in Sipaka Bay. Others can recall with the force of machetes splitting the barks of the coastal mangroves to extract the kiln when dried is used as natural color for the fermented coconut sap made into

the popular concoction called “Tuba”. Misamis Oriental is endowed with many progressive municipalities along the coast of Northern Mindanao with fishing and copra as an industry. Landlocked fields stretching to the mountains with fertile soil planted with fruit bearing orchards and coconut trees provide backdrop to the greeneries. While rice paddy fields alongside national highways stretched in tandem miles away up to what the eyes can see helps provide the food sufficiency of the province.

Talisayan is one place that strikes a similarity to the French Riviera when

navigating the winding paved coastal road during summer. During sunset, the sky reflects silhouettes of dark orange color into the horizon as fisher folks set their boats to the open seas towards the channel in the nearby Camiguin Islands some 50 nautical miles away for the regular evening catch of Sardines and Groupers. Talisayan coast aside from a rich fishing ground is the passage route of the unique whale sharks called “Tawikis” that feeds on the plankton of the Mindanao seas. Catching this rare environmentally threatened species has long been banned by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatics

Resources.

There are beach resorts in the area; one is the popular Mantangale Dive Resort which specialized in Scuba Diving along the Sipaka Point which has attracted foreign divers visiting Northern Mindanao. Daytime sea foods dining are famous in the restaurant rows along the Poblacion Boulevard. Authentic honey bees’ extractions and organic vegetables are sold in the market nearby.

Talisayan is a source of pride for the Governor Oscar S. Moreno’s governance in the province.

Enhancing basic social services has alleviated poverty and improved the quality of life in

the Municipality. Many Technical Education Scholars of the town are now gainfully employed in Cagayan de Oro working in the hotels and restaurants either as Waiters or Baristas that makes the favorite flavored coffees. I know of many young men and women from Talisayan who were once walking barefooted in their childhood who have come a long way and now worked in the famous restaurants of North America and Canada earning substantially for their families. I have seen how many of their youth were empowered with quality education and their environment protected surviving as a healthy community.

All Set for PhotoWorld Asia 2013 on Jan 31

I

t’s barely three weeks to go and everything is set for PhotoWorld Asia 2013, the largest and longest-running photography trade show and convention happening on January 31-Febr u ar y 5. The speakers, the sponsors, the secretariat, the venues and the delegates – all are ready for the big rollout on opening day.

The latest detail to be finalized is the venue for the hands-on photo shoot with American professional photographer Joe McNally and the other convention speakers.

FPPF Chairperson Mrs. Eduviges Y. Huang said it will be held at the Fernwood Gardens in Quezon City, a favorite wedding venue with a lush tropical garden setting.

“The hands-on shoot with the guest speakers and delegates will include Body Painting, Cosplay, and Fashion models,” Mrs. Huang said.

The Fernwood hands - on work shop on February 5 with the master photographers is a separate event outside of the 5-day international photographers’ convention. Delegates

are invited to attend the Fernwood event to shoot with the masters.

T h e P h o t o Wo r l d Asia trade show and international photographers convention is an annual event run by the Federation of Philippine Photographers Fo u n d at i o n ( F P P F ) without fail since 1995.

The trade show at the Ayala Malls in Glorietta Makati showcases the l at e s t c a m e r a s a n d photography gadgets from major companies l i ke C anon , Ni kon , Olympus, Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, Fujifilm, Kodak, and many others while the international photographers’ convention at the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) also in Makati will have master photographers as speakers topbilled by world renowned US professional photographer Joe McNally and his first assistant Drew Gurian.

Filipino masters who will share their expertise and insights with convention delegates are: Allan Razo, G-nie Arambulo, Revoli Cortez, Edwin Bacasmas, Nap Jamir II, Dan Pamintuan, Prof. Cecilia Manikan,

Edwin Loyola, Jomel Gregorio, Nick Tuason, Jay Tablante and Arnel Murillo.

RATIONALE OF THE PROJECT - This is the 2nd Mindanao Business Leaders Awards, in a different category from the first one. The 1st Mindanao Business Leaders Awards was undertaken last year to give due recognition to the achievements of various Mindanao business leaders and entrepreneurs in various categories of homegrown corporate and individual business leadership achievements.

- This year’s search is aimed at giving honor and recognition of excellent business leaders in the investors’s category.

- BusinessWeek Mindanao as a forerunner of information on economic leadership and entrepreneurial achievements of non-Mindanaoan corporations and businessmen, deems it a part of its social responsibility to trumpet the achievements of these pillars of Mindanao’s economy, for others to emulate and thus propel an awareness for the business potential that Mindanao offers in every economic and business investment plan, whether small or great.

Entry Requirements: 1. Individual and Company/Establishment nominations shall be accompanied with Nomination Forms available on-line at the Sponsors Website, offices of sponsors, or in the printed page of Businessweek Mindanao and Mindanao Daily issues or may be mailed, if requested, by the Awards Secretariat 2. Nominees or candidates in various categories shall be nominated by BusinessWeek Mindanao and Mindanao Daily Bureaus; individuals, organization or groups not employed by or connected to any of the nominated person or firm .
