Pioneer Mindanao CATV operator first to offer VOB Mike Baños

Cagayan de Oro City (March 11, 2013) Mindanao’s pioneer cable television company marks another milestone by being the first to over “Voice Over Broadband” (VOB) service in the island.

“VOB enables the delivery of an integrated voice service with cable-Internet and/or cable TV subscription,” said Engr. Elpidio M. Paras, president and chief executive officer of Parasat Cable TV, Inc., the first cable television (CATV) company in Mindanao during the product launch held March 8 at a local restaurant.

“This means that voice, internet and cable TV

will pass through a single connection and subscribers can avail of one bundled service package instead of three separate subscriptions.”

Parasat has partnered with Bayan Telecommunications Inc. (Bayan) for the voice service feature and will initially be offering the “Triple Play” package in Cagayan de Oro and eventually to all its other service areas.

new service does not involve the installation of any new cables for their existing Parasat CATV and Cable 21 internet subscribers except the special modems with voice ports and can be activated immediately.

All three services can also be operated simultaneously by the Triple Play subscriber without any degradation of any of the three services, he added.

“All calls to Bayan Telecommunications 200,000 existing subscribers nationwide are free,” said Mikhail Rio P. Villacin, sales head-Mindanao who represented Bayan at the launch. “Callers will also be able to call subscribers of other land line systems since interconnection is mandated by law.”

Lumbia organized a storytelling session for over 70 children aged 3-6.

The Xavier Ecoville staff gave a brief introduction about the World Read Aloud Day, following it with an action song to jumpstart the activity. Small groups were formed according to the children’s ages.

The storytellers prepared books and props appropriate for the children’s level of comprehension.

This activity aimed to promote literacy and book appreciation among the Xavier Ecoville children.

Gender advocates celebrate Women’s Month 2013

he people’s initiative aimed at compelling Congress to pass an enabling law for the Constitutional provision banning political dynasties continues to gain ground with the recent launching of the Movement Against Dynasties (MAD) in Cagayan de Oro City last Sunday, March 3, 2013.

Leaders of the movement said the initiative was launched in three of Cagayan de Oro City’s largest Catholic churches: The Church of the Black Nazarene, the St. Augustine Metropolitan Church and the Our Lady of Fatima Parish Church in Barangay Camama-an.

“Our opening salvo in Mindanao aims to make voters aware of the proliferation of political dynasties and convince them not to vote for members of political dynasties in the coming elections,” said Quintin San Diego, MAD Chairman.

“We are asking church goers to sign the petition proposing the enactment of an enabling law that will make the provision of the 1987 Philippine Constitution against political dynasties operational and penalize violators.

MAD is a nationwide non-partisan organization of volunteers from socio, civic, and religious organizations, nongovernment organizations, cause -oriented advocates and university and college students mobilized under the aegis of Sec. 5 of Republic Act 6735, the Initiative and Referendum Act.

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY - The Gender Advocates and Women in Government Service in Region 10 (GA WINGS 10) will celebrate Women’s Month this March through several activities.

GA 10 President Clarissa C. Rosales said a mass will be held Friday, tomorrow, 7:30 a.m., at the Camp Alagar grounds in Lapasan, Cagayan de Oro City, to kick off the

celebration. It will be followed an opening program and “Hataw.”

“This provides the people to exercise the power of people's initiative or referendum by getting at least 10 percent of registered voters, represented by at least three percent of registered voters in every legislative district of the entire country, to sign a petition that will be presented to the COMELEC to call for a referendum to enact and pass an enabling law on Section 26,” San Diego added.

Section 26 of the Constitution states that "The state shall guarantee equal access to opportunities for public service and prohibit political dynasties as may be defined by law."

“After 26 years, congress has not acted on the proposed enabling law because 70 percent of legislators belong to political dynasties,” Danilo O. Olivares, MAD co-chairman, told local media covering the launch. “Neither the Supreme Court nor COMELEC can be expected to act on petitions to prohibit dynastic candidates from running for the simple nor convenient reason that the Constitution does not provide an enabling law.”

Olivares said however that they realize that the signature campaign may go beyond 2013 and well into the 2016 election. However, he stresses that by doing the signature campaign all over the country now, they will be able to inform the people that political dynasties are prohibited by law, are wrong and are harmful to the country and as such it is up to the people who not to vote come election day.

MAD's position is that there should be ONLY ONE ELECTED OFFICIAL per family up to the 2nd degree by affinity or consanguinity.

In his homily during the noontime high mass Sunday at the St. Augustine Metropolitan Cathedral Archbishop Antonio J. Ledesma cited recent studies presented by the University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila University and other institutions which tend to show a correlation between corruption, poverty and violence.

“Political dynasties are co-related with corruption because there are no longer checks and balances when people from the same families are in office and helping one another,” Bishop Ledesma noted. “Another correlation that these studies have borne out is that political dynasties are co-related with poverty itself. The more the larger the political dynasties in government, the more poverty seems to persist in our economy.”

The prelate also cited how another study showed that 70 percent of public officials today belong to political dynasties.

“It is, I think, a sad commentary that our leadership cannot be more widely spread among people who are perhaps more competent, more conscientious and more committed than members of political dynasties,” he noted.

MAD was launched last February 17 at the historic Baclaran Church where MAD volunteers got hundreds of church goers to sign the petition. Baclaran is the site of the successful signature campaigns in 1985 and in 2009 which convinced Cory Aquino and later, Nonoy Aquino to accept the people's draft for them to run for president.

“I am happy that MAD has finally come at last. It really took time in coming,” said Rev. Fr. Rey Monsanto, parish priest of the Nazareno church. “This is enshrined in our constitution but no lawmaker took it up to author an enabling law probably because it will work against the interest of his/her own family. It is therefore high time that the people themselves through an initiative force the next congress to take this constitutional provision seriously.

Political dynasties work mainly for the interest of the families in power and don’t give chances to poorer and lesser known individuals with leadership potential.”

he Philippines’ largest national flag carrier, Cebu Pacific (PSE:CEB) reminds passengers that the Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) will integrate the PHP200 domestic terminal fee into the cost of all airline tickets starting March 1, 2013.

All passengers with domestic flights originating from or passing through the Cebu airport will soon pay their PHP200 MCIAA terminal fees upon purchase of airline tickets.

Purchase may be done through internet booking, airline ticket offices and ticketing or travel agents.

Those who book their Cebu tickets before March 1 will still pay the MCIAA terminal fee at designated terminal fee counters at the airport.

“Last August 2012, all airlines began collecting the domestic terminal

fee for flights out of Manila. With one less queue, the arrangement has successfully improved passenger flow at the airport,” said CEB VP for Marketing and Distribution Candice Iyog.

“We are working with MCIAA to replicate this, to further improve guest experience at the airport.

From Manila and now Cebu, our passengers will no longer have to line up and pay the terminal fee after checking in for their flight,” she added.

CEB offers the most flights out of Cebu, with 20 direct domestic and 6 international routes.

This includes direct flights from Cebu to Manila, Coron, Clark, Caticlan (Boracay), Davao, General Santos, Cagayan de Oro, Legazpi, Puerto Princesa, Surigao, Pagadian, Iloilo and Ozamiz.

It is one of the remaining independent CATV companies following the consolidation of the industry into some big players and medium-sized independent operators.

Parasat had its humble beginnings in 1976 as an electronics retail store and repair shop known as Paras Electro-Industrial Systems.

It offered customized music cassette tape recording and video (betamax) rentals, and specialized in the installation of high-end sound systems for discotheques which were then in vogue like Mindanao Hotel’s Salamin and Alta Tierra in Cagayan de Oro, Hotel del Rio in Iloilo and Xenon disco in Davao.

Paras Electro also pioneered the installation of widescreen TV screens in fast foods and restaurants which were hooked up to video cassette recorders and satellite television featuring NBA Basketball and world boxing mega matches.

In 1985, Mr. Paras started manufacturing satellite dishes and television receive only (TVRO) systems which became an unwitting player in Philippine history when

it beamed the 1986 EDSA Revolution and the 1990 Gulf War live to the living rooms of Kagay-anons via the then fledgling Cable News Network, now better known as CNN. But it was in 1989 when Executive Order 205 deregulating the cable TV industry was signed by Pres.

Corazon Aquino that business really took off as CATV operators all over the country made a beeline to Parasat’s humble office in Cruz Taal Street to order their TVRO systems.

In 1991, Paras established Parasat Cable TV, Inc. as the first ever CATV system in Mindanao. With an initial investment of P200, 000 and less than 10 employees, its headend was the backyard of the Paras residence in Villa Ernesto Subdivision in Gusa.

With an initial offering of 12 channels, the service was first offered to their neighbors in the subdivision.

Today, Parasat Cable continues to grow and has given birth to diversified interests in adventure sports (Dahilayan Adventure Park/ Great White Water Tours), coffee shop (Coffee Works), salon and spa (Vanity Works and Ban Sabai), call center/ BPO ( Arriba Telecontact and Paramedix Inc.) and English proficiency training (Versatel).

New hawk-owls specie sighted in Camiguin Jorie C. Valcorza PIA-10

MAMBAJAO, Camiguin Big, fluffy, blue-gray eyed hawk-owls were sighted by researchers in this volcanic island paradise at the northern tip of Mindanao.

It is the only one of its kind. At night, it gives a long solo hoot that builds in intensity, with a distinctive low growling tone to attract mates or defend their territory.

Pairs of these owls often do short barking duets (rapid yapping) that always starts with a growl.

Recordings and observations made by scientists from the Philippines Biodiversity Conservation Foundation confirm the uniqueness of its attributes when compared to other hawkowl population, not even those found in other parts Mindanao.

Researchers noted a consistent disparity in plumage and measurements, but despite this confusing physical resemblance, variability, and vocal differences, they said these only confirm that this is a new specie.

In some published interviews with the authors, they conveyed their amazement on the differences in vocalization.

Experts said the owls do not learn their song; it is genetically wired in their DNA. As such, this bird now finds its place in the global avian diversity levels, now named as Ninox leventisi Camiguin or the Camiguin Hawk-Owl, together with new owl specie also found in Cebu.

Luzon hawk-owl (scientific name Ninox philippensis), Mindor hawk-owl (Ninox mindorensis), the Romblon hawk-owl (Ninox spilonata), the Mindanao hawk-owl (Ninox spilocephala), the Sulo hawk-owl (Ninox reyi), Cebu hawk-owl (Ninox rumseyi) and new subspecie of Romblon hawkowl named (Ninox spilonata fisheri).

The lead author of this taxonomy review of the Philippine Hawk-Owls is Pamela Rasmussen, together with other coauthors of this scientific initiative with a team of American, British and Filipino scientists-Desmond Allen, Nigel Collar, Bram Demeulemeseester, Robert Hutchinson, Robert Kennedy, Frank Lambert, Liza Marie Paguntalan, and Philip Godfrey Jakosalem.

Camiguin Protected Area Superintendent and Forest Management Services Chief, Roberto S. Rufino on the other hand said, further studies on the owl’s habitat and conservation is now ongoing.

These owls have been sighted in Sitio Pamahawan, Barangay Pandan, a site covered under the Mt.

Timpoong Protected Area and often frequented by researchers who want to explore the richness of the mountain’s biological biodiversity.

Other scientific research conducted here also found new species of moss mouse (smallest rat) and hangingparrots (split).

Meanwhile, the province is set to launch the discovery of the Camiguin Hawk-Owl to the public on March 9, in time for the Mt. Timpoong-HibokHibok Protected Area 9th Anniversary celebration.

To date, the Camiguin Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (Penro) has entered into a partnership agreement with the Mindanao State University (MSU) Iligan Institute of Technology for the conduct of another research project the seeks to collect information on the population and ecology of Camiguin endemic species, such as, the Camiguin Hawk-Owl, Camiguin Narrow-Mouthed Frog, and other species.

The team will likewise investigate the diversity and abundance of canopy and understory birds and bats and identify existing and potential threats to these species and to their habitat.

The boats, which are part of the fluvial float contest, accompany the Our Lady of Lourdes float and are decorated with flowers and colorful streamers. The criteria in choosing the winners of the said contest depends on the creativity, relevance to the celebration and visual effect to the viewers.

After the fluvial float, Rev. Dancela puts on the Our Lady of Lourdes apparition on the head and shoulders of the devotees.

“Such act is a way to show that we are seeking for good health from the Birhen sa Lourdes and it is also a manifestation of faith renewal, and submission to the Blessed Virgin Mary,” Saligumba explained.

Saligumba said about 5,000 visitors arrive annually for the festival and to seek healing from illnesses. He said the water that flows out from the feet of the Birhen sa Lourdes apparition situated beside the church is said to be miraculous and many residents and even visitors attest to its healing power.

Our Lady of Lourdes is a title of the Blessed Virgin Mary which was invoked by the Roman Catholics to honor the Marian apparitions which are said to have taken place before various individuals on separate occasions around Lourdes, France.

DOLE-10 Camiguin launches squid drying and catching Mildred R. Enerio-Dablio Labor Communications Officer

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, March 4 - Residents and visitors of Binuangan, Misamis Oriental observe a traditional yet sacred way of celebrating faith, life and good health through the Patunob Festival held every first week of February.

To honor their patron saint - Our Lady of Lourdes, people from Binuangan hold several activities which include a parade, cultural show, trade fair, fluvial float and boat race.

Binuangan Municipal Planning Officer Manuel L. Saligumba, over-all chairman of the 2013 festivity, said for this year, eight barangays participated in the cultural show and fluvial float. These are Poblacion, Mosangot, Mabini, Dampias, Valdeconcha, Kitamban, Kitambis and Nabataan.

“We traditionally celebrate the Patunob Festival on February 10 to 12. On the third day of celebration, our parish priest Rev. Ricardo A. Dancela, SSJV, leads the fluvial float accompanied by Binuangan fisher folks and devotees,” Saligumba said.

Mambajao, Camiguin - The squid drying and catching of the Balite 2 SEAK Women’s Consumers Cooperative (BSWCC) of Balite, Sagay, Camiguin Province is now operating for business since the 2nd week of January 2013.

Mr. Jose Errol Natividad, OICProvincial Head of the Department of Labor and Employment-10, Camiguin Provincial Field announced its launching of the project. “With the approval from our DOLE Regional Director Johnson G. Cañete last 5 November 2012, the DOLE has released to BSWCC a livelihood financial assistance under its DOLE Integrated Livelihood Program (DILP) amounting to PhP 298,000.00,” Mr. Natividad mentioned.

The DILP is a government program that

engages unemployed workers in livelihood undertaking to make them productive, and the rank and file wage workers in collective enterprise/undertakings to augment their income.

This endeavor is the aim of DOLE through the financial assistance to purchase weighing scale, freezer, 5 units of pump boats, squid flashers, jiggers, flashlights, knives, Styrofoam and bigsized cellophanes, fishing nets, containers, and the starting capital in buying fresh squid.

Further, in its initial operation, the group has already employed ten (10) women-members for the squid drying, earning PhP 20.00 for every 100 pieces of fresh squids. Accordingly, the husbands of the women-members will operate the 5 pump boats in catching squids and will then receive two-thirds (2/3) of its earnings.

A month from its operation, the group has already harvested 500 kilos of fresh squid sold at PhP 35.00 per kilo to the women-members. After the drying process,

the 500 kilos is reduced to approximately 65 kilos which will then be sold at PhP 500.00 per kilo to the local market of the entire province.

Currently, Sagay municipality is the only major producer of dried squid for the province.

Ms. Adelina Fabela, BSWCC Project Manager, is thankful to note that from its gross income of PhP 32,500.00, the cooperative has already earned a net income of PhP 14,900.00 or a total profit approximately 45.84% from its expenses of PhP 17,500 for the labor and capital.

For its daily operation, Ms. Fabela shared that they have adopted the bayanihan system. “We meet regularly every month to resolve issues and concerns,” she added.

Further, BSWCC President, Mrs. Maricel S. Uayan thanked Director Cañete for the livelihood and employment opportunities they have generated from the assistance.

The Department of Agriculture with the Public Employment Service Office (PESO) provided technical assistance to the members.

He finished his Master of Music degree under the guidance of Prof. Benchito Carino, at the Philippine Women's University, Manila where he is also a member of the guitar faculty.

Monching, as he is fondly known to the music circuit has already played numerous concerts throughout the Philippines and has performed in several guitar festivals abroad.

Aside from teaching and performing, he also writes music for the guitar, stage plays and short films.

He took lessons and master

classes with world renowned guitarists such as Jorge Luis Zamora (Cuba), Aniello Desiderio (Italy), Berta Rojas (Paraguay), Elena Papendreou (Greece), Roman Viazovsky (Ukraine) and Shin-Ichi Fukuda (Japan).

He also takes special lessons with German guitarist Carsten Linck. Carpio has represented the Philippines in several competitions in the country and around Asia and has consistently brought awards such as 3rd place in the Bangkok International Guitar Competition (2010), Grand Prize winner of the 2011 Philippine International Guitar Competition and Grand Prize Winner of 2012 Asia International Guitar Competition in Thailand.

R10 reforests 13,000 hectares in 2012 Peri Madridano PIA-10 CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 10 reported that in 2012 the region planted 13,855 hectares (ha) of public lands to include mangrove forests, riverbank rehabilitation, and urban greening.

The National Greening Program (NGP) of the Aquino administration is a vehicle of government to enhance the country’s forest stock to absorb carbon dioxide largely blamed for global warming.

This massive forest rehabilitation program seeks to grow 1.5 billion trees in 1.5 million hectares nationwide from 2011 to 2016, said Ruth Tawantawan, DENR 10 regional

He added that government agencies and institutions including local government units have provided support to the program not only in tree planting but also in the production of quality seedlings, mobilization of employees including students from Grade 5 to college level.

“Our people’s organizations, particularly those from largely Community-Based Forest Management areas, are responsible in taking care of the seedlings planted by other participants since they are living in these areas.

In a way, NGP has provided alternative livelihood activities for these marginalized upland and lowland households through seedling production and maintenance of newly-planted trees.

In turn they are included in

the Conditional Cash Transfer Program of the Department of Social Welfare and Development,” Tawantawan said.

The reforestation and tree growing in 2012 covered 13,855 hectares entailed almost seven million of forest and fruit tree seedlings, disclosed Agustilo Obsioma, regional technical director of the Forest Management Services.

Obsioma added that this regional accomplishment was made possible by 31,234 volunteers coming from all sectors who wanted to pitch in the restoration of our dwindling forest cover.

He clarified that as part of the convergence initiative of the departments of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform, half of the tree planted constituted forest tree species intended for timber

production and protection while the remaining half was composed of agroforestry species.

It can be recalled that on February 24, 2011 President Benigno Aquino issued Executive Order No. 26 declaring the implementation of the National Greening Program as a government priority program to reduce poverty, promote food security, environmental stability and biodiversity conservation and enhance climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Areas eligible for rehabilitation under the program include all lands of the public domain. Specifically, these include forest lands, mangrove and protected areas, ancestral domains, civil and military reservation, urban greening areas, inactive and abandoned mine sites and other suitable lands.

Kaamulan

ast weekend, i took the bus to go up to Bukidnon Province to experience first-hand one of the most colorful festivals in Mindanao The Kaamulan.

I gathered that the festival's origin is very organic in nature. It sprouted some 38 years ago when a small group of indigenous groups were asked to grace the town fiesta and perform a dance.

It became a hit so they decided to formally make it into an annual celebration. Thus, Kaamulan Festival is born.

The name is truly apt since it comes from the Binukid word "to gather." From this simple gathering of the indigenous people, the versions of the festival that followed became more elaborate.

Food fests, rodeo shows, musical concerts, bazaars and a whole range of events form the modern take of the Kaamulan.

It is indeed the festivals of bounty, beauty, harvest and appreciation of local culture, art a heritage.

The latest of which I am fortunate to witness is quite an experience.

A sea of people filled the narrow city streets and music from boom boxes and loud speakers outshine each other.

The pulsating rhythm of the festivities is definitely infectious.

The euphoric energy really overflows! I even had the chance to dance the traditional steps right at the Kaamulan grounds together with other tourists and a dance troupe from Bukidnon State University.

However, like most festivals around the country where there are multitudes of spectators that come to visit, I feel sad at the sight of garbage competing for attention and sometimes upstaging the colorful buntings and festive tarps that are sprawled all over.

We can never really blame the organizers; to manage such a huge crowd is a daunting task.

To impose discipline among the guests and visitors is not easy but as guests to this wonderful city, we must always respect the place.

Basic courtesy of simply putting waste materials in its proper place is I think a thing we must voluntarily do and not something they ask us to act on.

The beauty of the city got dampened by the piling rubble of waste at the base of pine trees or lying at the open fields of grass.

People come to Kaamulan for so many reasons.

Whatever it is, they gather together to share commonalities and uniqueness, sharing joys and fostering ties.

I just hope that as they leave the city, they bring with them good memories and become responsible individuals that preserve the environment they had fun times with.

We as visitors come to appreciate Bukidnon's bounty; we must do our share to preserve its beauty.

To the people of Bukidnon, I am in awe of the Kaamulan and I cannot wait to go back next year!

Schistosomiasis:

hile on my way out of the hospital, I met a patient from years back. We got into “ kamustahan “ and I inquired how she is and I was happy to know that, with her religious follow up with her Attending Dr, and the intake of her medications, she feels better and has not experienced the recurrence of her symptoms.

This particular patient was referred to me for a rectal tissue imprint reading. She complained of abdominal pain and the occasional finding of blood in her stools. I gave out the diagnosis of positive for schistosoma ova.

Schistosomiasis is not yet eliminated from the roster of diseases in our country.

As a matter of fact, it ranks third after Tuberculosis and Malaria.

According to the National Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, Schistosomiasis is endemic in 28 of the 79 provinces.

This was a portion of the seminar yesterday that amused the ladies and made the majority laugh, but come to think of it Seven lipsticks, you and I can’t use all of those in a day but why bring them around?

The speaker pointed out... Why do we women carry so much stuff in our bags? That’s when we carry them as if we’re carrying weights whole day long, the speaker illustrated.

You see physically we are overloading ourselves, to the point that it already becomes a clutter without even realizing it.

More than the physical and material cluttering the emotional clutter is the worst. Why it’s the worst? It affects everything that we do and everyone around us.

So what’s the simple solution? DE CLUTTER Now, before sharing to you how to de clutter allow me to share to you as well what cluttering means as shared by the speaker.

Clutter simply means delayed decisions. It includes anything that is unfinished, unused or

unresolved, that occupies space in your heart, mind or environment.

This definition speaks so much to me, how much more to you? I realized it’s not only the material things, the unresolved issues but even the talents that we have but we refuse to use.

To De Clutter the material things we need four medium size boxes in comparison to a balikbayan box.

For example in de cluttering a cabinet, slowly get all things out and put all of them first on a laid old blanket. Wipe the cabinet with a clean wet cloth with Zonrox or with a brush. Label the first box “Throw”.

Sort out the things you need to throw like broken, missing pair, outdated and ugly stuff.

Put these things inside the first box and when it’s full bring it out of the room.

Next label second box “donate” again sort the things to donate and when you do it , think of your recipients already.

When it’s full bring it out from the room.

Third label the next box “sell” pick out the things you want to sell then label it right away with

corresponding price, put it in the box and when it’s full bring the box out of the room.

Fourth label the next box “relocate/return” you see as you sort things out sure enough you will find items that is not yours so don’t hesitate to call the owners to return it or you might have the wrong items placed at the wrong places so put them in this box.

Last box or the “invisible box” or invisibly labelled as “surrender box”.

It’s the last box but it’s the first to be filled. What emotional baggage do you carry daily? Past hurts, hang ups, bitterness, anger, sin, etc. These are the invisible stuff that we may be keeping in our hearts for years without knowing it and you just don’t feel like living anymore because of it.

You and I need to surrender the stuff if we want to fulfil the purpose that God has placed in our lives.

When we surrender, it’s humbling ourselves before God and accepting the fact that we cannot do it without Him. When we de clutter our emotions we let go so that God can heal us and allow Him to fulfil His purpose in

a major role in making Schistosomiasis part of the working clinical impression.

For the past 20 years of my practice, the patients who get positive during a Laboratory examination, whether it be a tissue biopsy that happens to be an incidental finding only ( when a specimen is submitted for something else ), a rectal imprint with specific requests for a look out for the eggs, or during a routine stool or urine tests, are actually patients that either live or have travelled to an endemic area.

Thus, a very thorough history taking and a complete physical examination play a major role in arriving at a correct diagnosis.

Schistosomiasis is caused by a parasite.

The importance of an Informed consent, an active participation and cooperation in one’s treatment cannot be underestimated in the success or failure of the chosen modality...

As I clean up my paper clutter in music from musical scores, song lyrics, to misplaced wires and unused technical books in music may my fellow artists also de clutter the stuff they need to clean up.

Remember we cannot have a smooth gig when our mind and heart is full of clutter, when our working area is full of misplaced gadgets around us or worse a misplaced wiring can also jeopardize a gig.

The Investment Pyramid If after working diligently and saving some amount with exemplary self-discipline, you have managed to eke out a million pesos that you would like to invest, the one important question that you should ask is: “Where shall I invest it?”

A cardinal rule of investing states: “Investigate before you invest!” And before you do entertain any unscrupulous investment proposition and get burned, it would be best to understand the basic concept of the investment pyramid.

All possible investment tools available in the market that you can allocate in your portfolio can be positioned in its rightful place anywhere along the ascending steps of the investment pyramid.

Knowing the pyramid can provide for you a wellbalanced and diversified approach to investing.

At the very base of this pyramid would be your foundational investments that are geared towards capital preservation. This includes your cash as well as cash-equivalent instruments like bank deposits, money market accounts and traditional insurance tools with guaranteed cash values.

As you go higher up the pyramid’s second level, you will encounter conservative investments with secure income. This includes your bonds (either government or corporate) as well as your conservatively managed funds invested in bonds or a balanced strategy.

The third level up the pyramid contains investments that are more concerned with growth and return of your capital. This includes large capitalization stocks, managed equity funds, as well as income-producing real estate.

At the topmost level of the pyramid would be your investments that are mostly speculative in nature. This includes stocks of small-capitalization companies, undeveloped lands, and even running your own business. Consider also highly speculative tools such as futures trading, jewelries and precious metals, as well as commodities.

PRIVATE investments for convention centers create external benefits for a community.

Meetings, incentives, convention and events or MICE support a variety of tourism related industries that includes lodging, restaurants, catering, transportation and retail shopping.

This could have been seen by SM Prime group of Mr. Henry Sy with their aggressive undertaking and expansions after the huge SMX at the Mall of Asia has cornered major national events in Metro Manila.

On March 6, 2013, a modern SMX Convention Center will open along the J. P. Laurel Avenue in Lanang, Davao City with the MICE convention as its opening salvo.

By all indication, this will be the biggest venue in Mindanao to house trade shows, conference and professional gatherings involving national and international associations which is a growing market in terms of memberships and attendance.

The Philippine International Convention Center Roxas Boulevard in Manila has long dominated the venues for national and international gatherings from the late 90’s to year 2000 until modern technology and sophistication of lights, sound and stages have advanced and revolutionized the trend in the industry.

New venues for sports and entertainment that are up to world class standards have also sprouted in the national capital region; the SM Arena is proving a better alternative to the Smart Araneta Coliseum for major sports events and concerts.

with ample parking grounds are manifesting in the architecture as the best feature for a viable convention center. Many international acts and popular concerts were sold out in the new venue.

In Cagayan de Oro, the Atrium at the Lim Ket Kai Center is still the better alternative for large gatherings with the convergence of fast food restaurants and shopping.

Mid size venues may contain local events with the Grand Caprice Restaurant huge banquet hall in the downtown area. Pryce Plaza in Carmen Hill has 800 seats Grand Ballroom which is ideal for weddings and social events.

This is back up with an 81 rooms, DOT rated 4-star hotel. The Xavier Estates Country Club has the ambiance but with certain club rules and restrictions but still count as the best exclusive venue.

Other hotels within the city have equal facilities but smaller seating capacities.

The new Seda Hotel of the Ayala Land Resorts and Hotel Group in the city has so far the most advance convention facilities for smaller groups.

In the future, dynamics of modern convention centers may become a necessity as supply and demand increases in the convention market.

Towards the year 2020 when the BIMP – Eaga linkage have attained its forecasted growth actualized by trade and commerce and peoples mobility, great sporting events among the member countries may need a venue where 20,000 or more spectators can be gathered.

Coliseum facilities could well fit for construction. Of course the potential of world title boxing bouts and the growing popularity of the Philippine Basketball Association with the periodic NBA Basketball Tours should be taken into considerations as multiplier effect for large venues.

Building convention centers and huge coliseum has its risk and cost factor that will scare and create nightmares for the investors.

Analysis and forecasting future convention demands would play in the costing and displacements.

For an investor’s challenge, business synergies like hotels, malls and recreational facilities must come hand in hand to build the business traffic.

For a local government to venture into this huge capital outlay it must cautiously weight its benefit or else a “white elephant” syndrome will take place.

A convention center in the other mountain side of the Cagayan de Oro River which was constructed in the year 2001 using public funds is still under construction for the last twelve years and may never see its completion? Millions of government funds are wasted yearly over local government ambitious projects channeled from the political leader’s pork barrel allocations that do not see the light at the end of the tunnel.

With a modern airport waiting at the sideline, conventions in our region help grow tourism and reap economic benefits.

However, a serious study in its concept and good configuration of size and location must guide investor’s financial decisions.

For almost sixty-four (64) years already Criminology Education has been here in our country.

Its objective is primarily anchored on molding law enforcers that could effectively assist prosecutors in criminal cases.

This educational program is even way ahead by sixteen (16) years before the Philippine Congress passed Republic Act 4864 (Police Act of 1966); twenty-six (26) years ahead before the creation of the Integrated National Police; twenty-eight (28) years before the Philippine National Police Academy was operated; and forty-one (41) years before the Philippine National Police was established.

The forerunners of our criminology education were all active practitioners and stakeholders of the law enforcement sector, the prosecution and judiciary, and the correctional institutions of the country.

Their wisdom and acumen owe its lineage from their foreign and local formal education, trainings and handling of actual cases.

These vast knowledge and skills in law enforcement are in the

same texture shared today to our young people, honing them so as to realize their dreams and desires to become public safety practitioners, serving the people, protecting lives and properties.

Republic Act 6506 was passed into law in 1972, which mandated Board Examinations among criminology graduates.

However, it took sixteen (16) years before the first board examination was administered. As of 2003 to 2012 we have more than 75,000 Criminologists in the country, our rough estimate from 1988 to date, we have more than 100,000 Criminologists already.

The licensure examination is conducted twice a year, and is now the third most number of board examination takers in the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC), next only to nursing and education examinees.

There are more than 430 Higher Education Institutions (HEI’s) both in government and private Colleges and Universities offering criminology education.

Approximately 200,000 students enroll in criminology every semester from 1st to 4th year levels. These educational

institutions have adhered to the standards set by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

However, other schools go further and above par, by submitting their colleges to quality assurance evaluation.

The CHED has its mechanisms to recognize and award criminology schools with sterling performance in all aspects and dimensions of the program.

The Center for Excellence and Center of Development in Criminology Education is awarded

by CHED to schools which through the test of time have displayed remarkable achievements thereby making their graduates truly dependable human resources.

The Institutional Quality Assurance through Monitoring and Evaluation (IQUAME) of CHED is also one of the available tools to look into the quality of the graduates of HEIs. Aside from CHED the PACOCOA, PAASCU, AACCUP, and ISO are just some of the few accrediting institutions with international affiliations which continually benchmark the standards in order to cope with the international demands.

Big winner in Bukidnon’s Kaamulan Festival 2013 Cheng Ordonez

T

he ethnic dance with the storyline of a giant, harassing a foodabundant community, killing a beautiful woman, who is a cousin of three datus and whose blood flowed all over the place and literally painting the town red, is a big winner, bagging this year’s Street Dance and Ground Competitions during the Kaamulan Festival of the Province of Bukidnon, held from the second half of February to March 10.

The top awards in the festival’s two big categories went to Kitaotao, a town in Bukidnon named after a Manobo leader Datu Tayaotao, who bravely and successfully helped a Muslim Datu fight against the invasion of the Spaniards and, in gratitude, the Muslim Datu offered his only daughter in marriage and gave him a huge area of land he named after Datu Tayaotao which later on became Kitaotao - the Land of Wealth.

Kitaotao is diverse in ethnic groups. Among the domineering tribes are the Dumagat, the Matigsalog and the Manobo. The presence of the cultural communities in the locality with its unique customs and traditional practices made Kitaotao a cultural tourism destination of Bukidnon.

were truly ethnic during the Kaamulan Festival held recently.

With the theme: “Sustaining Culture and Unity Towards Progress and Development,” Kaamulan 2013 lived up to the expectations of both local and foreign tourists who were amazed by the kind of festival this province in Northern Mindanao is celebrating every year.

Tourism (DOT) Regional Office 10 declared the Kaamulan Festival as one of the best festivals in the country today, urging the local government unit and private entities to put up more accommodations accredited by DOT 10 to house the increasing number of local and foreign tourists year after year.

DOT 10 Regional Director Catalino Chan III described the Kaamulan Festival 2013, in his message during the

grounds into a marketplace, like in the old times, except that there were already modern commodities put up for sale.

Kaamulan also involves unique sporting events, like Rodeo and the modern motocross, Moto Trail Challenge, wall climbing and a lot more. No wonder, young and old alike from the different parts of the country come and troop to the Kaamulan Festival.

It is now a by-word in adventure tourism, and soon to be an agri-econature-retirement center in Mindanao. Almost all travel agencies in Cebu and in Manila are now selling the adventure package tour in Bukidnon. It is a package tour that is actually selling almost like hot cakes,” Director Chan told guests, visitors and Kaamulan contingents during the awarding rites.

Director Chan said the Kaamulan festival is perhaps the result of the product of 36 years

of staging. Sungkod Kamanga is participated by the Lumads alone while Kaamulan is a joint celebration of seven or eight tribes of Bukidnon and the people of Bukidnon.

“This is because even with the advent of modernization, the people are still adopting some of the customs and traditions of our forefathers, the pananghid, kasal, bunyag, pamalaye or even courtship,” Dir. Chan explained.

The regional tourism office assisted the Province of Bukidnon technically in the amount of P250,000 for this year’s Kaamulan Festival.

“It is my wish that we can bring the Kaamulan Festival to Manila and show the world how wonderful it is,” Dir. Chan said.

For his part, Bukidnon Governor Alex Padua

Calingasan and Vice Governor Jose Ma. Rubin Zubiri, Jr., thanked all the eight contingents for joining the Kaamulan 2013, and extending their gratitude to Director Chan and DOT 10 staff for their support.

“It is our vision to turn Bukidnon into a tourism adventure destination and eco-agricultural capital of the Philippines five years from now,” Gov. Calingasan said.

BIG WINNER’S GIANT ARAGASI Kitaotao, a place loved and blessed

by Manama (God) with the abundance of fruits from the forest and meat from the deer (salawing), wild pig (beboy nemahintalunan), monkeys, fishes and edible forest rats (talibaboy). One day the tribe could not go hunting or gather food because they fear the Aragasi – a giant man believed to eat humans or any creature for his food. The three cousins Datu Lana, Tulalang and Agyo used a woman as bait to capture the hideous creature.

They manage to catch the Aragasi but were unable to save the beautiful woman for she died in the hands of the Aragasi.

Her blood flowed all over the place, and the land where the beautiful woman died became red. The tribe brought the giant into Sinangawan mountain cliff. The three cousins Datu Lanang, Tulala and Agyo casted a spell over the giant that turned the latter into a huge white stone permanently fixed on a very high cliff overlooking the Pulangi river. From then on, the giant could no longer bother the tribe. So, as a gesture of thanksgiving, the tribe honored the three cousins with an indigenous ceremony.

One of the best Float Competitions in the Philippines,thus, declared the Department of Tourism Regional Office 10 headed by Director Catalino “Butch” Chan III of the Float Competition during the Kaamulan Festival 2012, which showcased the abundant agricultural products of the Province of Bukidnon.

STORYLINE VALENCIA Valencia, as a rice granary, is strongly influenced by the native beliefs and rituals.

One is the edging away of spirits known as Panlisig and Pamalas (to protect people against bad omen) in preparation for rice and corn planting. The tribe believes that the rite is a requisite for a bountiful harvest.

To execute the rites, a certain place is reserved for the spirit world Kalutan (house of spirits decorated with abaca trimmings and Kilala plant), a holy place which must not be disturbed or destroyed by people lest it will induce bad luck. To show respect, the tribal folks offer the Dugso dance to please the spirits and ensure bountiful harvests and some women drive the bad spirits into the house of spirits (Pangabog). Others do the Galas to clean the area. The warriors keep on guard to shield the place from intruders

and land grabbers. Believing that the deities and spirits are already pleased and appeased the native farmers starts the rice and corn planting. They dance the Talupak (done using a bamboo pole with trimmings. The upper portion is slated so that when one strikes the lower portion, a cracking sound is produced). Their busy hearts and hands for planting make living subsistent. Remarkably, they would always gladly share their produce to their kin and kindred.

Endless merriment fills the air when harvest time comes. Valencia City has come this far, nevertheless retains the attributes of the ethnic tribes. Their way of life, race and ethnicity becomes social constructs though influenced by modernization; Valencia still retains indelible marks and is popularly called, the City of Golden Harvest.

Showcasing the unique indigenous culture of Bukidnon, the Kaamulan is held annually in the province from the second half of February to March 10, the date that marks the anniversary of the creation of Bukidnon as a province in 1917.

As an ethnic festival, the Kaamulan celebrates the customs and traditions of the seven tribal groups that originally inhabited the Bukidnon region, namely, the Bukidnon, Higaonon, Talaandig, Manobo, Matigsalug, Tigwahanon and Umayamnon.

Several tribal folks representing these seven hill tribes of Bukidnon gather in unity with the local dwellers in town, wearing their intricately woven costumes studded with trinkets, anklets, earrings,

necklaces, leglets, headdresses and amulets. They dance together, chant, perform ancient rituals, and compete in indigenous sports.

What makes the Kaamulan Festival unique is the presence of the tribe-people themselves in the dance presentations.

They dance with their authentic ritual moves and clothing, which other festivals in the country can hardly have.

The Provincial Government of Bukidnon will be celebrating its Centennial Year on September 1, 2014. The basis of such was the research findings of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, duly signed by Dr. Maria Serena I. Diokno, dated May 31, 2012, stating that the province of Bukidnon was created under Act No. 2408 that took effect on September 1, 1914. Such creation was affirmed and adopted then by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) headed

oyota Motor Philippines Corporation (TMP) recently hosted its Annual Dealer Conference and Gala Awards at Shangri-la’s Mactan Resort and Spa, Cebu last February 22, 2013 to recognize the remarkable performance of its dealer network.

The event was held to honor individual achievers and topperforming dealers in the areas of Sales, After Sales and Customer Satisfaction and Overall Dealer Operations.

Moreover, TMP was also awarded by Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC), Toyota Motor Asia Pacific (TMAP) and Mitsui & Co., for its achievements from the previous year. One of which is attaining its 11th consecutive Triple Crown Title.

Toyota Cabanatuan City, Inc. (TCC) won several awards that night including the most coveted President’s Award of Excellence.

TCC was able to obtain the highest rating in overall dealer performance.

Meanwhile, the 1st runner-up and 2nd runner-up of the soughtafter award (President’s Award of Excellence) are Toyota Cagayan de Oro City, Inc. (TCO) and Toyota Shaw, Inc. (TSI) respectively.

TCC was also awarded the President’s Cup of CS Excellence for garnering the highest rating in Customer Satisfaction rating amongst all Toyota Dealers

nationwide.

TCC President, Mr. Jose Tan, Jr. received the awards in behalf of Team Toyota Cabanatuan.

Among the other awards presented during that night, a Special Award for the Highest Selling Dealer Outlet was awarded to Toyota Pasig (TPG) received by Toyota Shaw Group Chairman, Mr. Severino Lim, Executive Vice President, Ms. Jonalyn Lim and President Mr. Arturo Lopez.

TMP also lauded individual achievers for 2012. Toyota Cebu’s Alex Bilangoy and Christian Cabe of Toyota Baguio were awarded the Body Technician of the Year and the Paint Technician of the Year respectively.

Furthermore, Rodel Panganiban of Toyota Dasmarinas won the Body and Paint Service Advisor of the Year, Dennis Sadiwa of Toyota Marikina was the Parts Marketing Professional of the Year and Erwin Sibal of Toyota San Fernando was the Warranty Administrator of the Year. Lastly, the CR Skills Competition Champion was awarded to Liezl Trota of Toyota Cebu and the Marketing Professional of the Year was awarded to Andrew Geff Go of Toyota Alabang.
