Rolando “Klarex” Uy is now once again seeking a seat in Philippine Congress, he now runs within the ranks of the Liberal Party together with good friend Oscar “OCA” Moreno who is seeking to serve Cagayan de Oro as mayor after serving the Province of Misamis Oriental and Edgar Cabanlas who is running for the vice mayor seat.

Klarex Uy continues to help his constituents in Barangay Carmen, whether in office or personally.

PAL expands, kicks-off 12 new routes Philippine Airlines (PAL) announced today (April 26, 2013) the launching of 12 new destinations in Australia, China, Malaysia and Middle East, including a new domestic service to Northern Luzon in the continuing expansion of PAL's route network.

In a kick-off ceremony at Diamond Hotel, Ang unveiled the 12 new destinations – Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), May 2; Darwin, Brisbane and Perth (Australia), June 1; Guangzhou (China), June 2; Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), October

1; Doha (Qatar) November 1; Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam (Saudi Arabia), December 1; Dubai (United Arab Emirates), November 1 and Basco, Batanes on May 1 (the last two to be operated

by PAL Express).

Ang said PAL’s route expansion, particularly in the Middle East, will open strategic gateways and allow greater connectivity to more destinations in the region through PAL’s interline partners. “From UAE, for example, overseas Filipino workers can easily connect to other

key cities or countries through PAL’s airline partners in the Gulf,” Ang stressed.

With the opening of its Middle East gateways, PAL would become the only Philippine carrier with the widest footprint in the region, he said.

Ang added that the Philippines’ robust economy, recent credit rating upgrade, exciting tourist destinations and the country’s geographical advantage as a jump off point to many Asian cities are also behind PAL’s aggressive expansion.

With the wider route network, Ang said foreign tourists and business travelers can fly to Manila, enjoy the Philippines for a few days, or connect directly to PAL’s other Asian, Australian and North American destinations.

In November last year, PAL's new management began the network expansion with the launch of nonstop flights to Toronto, Canada.

PAL's current network, operated with PAL Express, consists of 32 domestic and 28 international points.

BPI sustains growth through net income Bank of the Philippine Islands continued to deliver sustainable growth as it reported a net income of P8.4 billion for the first quarter of 2013. This was 43% higher than last year’s P5.8 billion.

At the end of first quarter, BPI’s total resources were P940 billion, 16% higher yearon-year as deposits grew by the same rate to P748 billion.

In addition, the Bank was able to increase its assets under management to P758 billion or 6% more than same period last year.

Net loans hit P514 billion, 19% better year-on-year. Lending to top corporates was up by 25%, while the middle market and SME segments went up by 17% and 14% respectively.

Consumer loans also grew by 15%. Gross 30 days NPL ratio was down to 2.1% from last year’s 2.5%. Reserve cover was 129%.

The improvement in net income for the period was driven by the 21% growth in total revenues as the Bank took advantage of the favorable market condition to register securities trading gains.

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY - With the primary source of its power mix compromised by climate change, two industries in one of the regions in Mindanao hardest hit by the perennial energy shortage are turning to solar energy.

Cargill Oil Mills Philippines Inc., one of the top 20 companies operating in General Santos City, recently visited the only grid-connected solar energy plant in the country in this city for a first-hand look at what it hopes would someday soon be its main source of energy.

“We are putting up a 2.3 megawatt (MW) solar power plant for our copra crushing plant in Bgy. Tambler as our first option given the lengthy brownouts we’ve been experiencing through the years as a result of the power shortage,” said Ruther S. Baroy, senior plant manager. “At present, we are sourcing our power from the South Cotabato II Electric Cooperative (Socoteco II) with our back-up diesel generator as a second option.”

However, Mr. Baroy said the extended brownouts in Gensan have forced them to increasingly operate their back-up genset which is prohibitively expensive and greatly degrades the price competitiveness of their crude coconut oil product.

This, despite the plant’s consistent operations at one of the highest utilization rates in the industry using the mechanical, full press oil extraction technology. Provided its copra raw material is available, Mr. Baroy said Cargill runs the 700,000MT capacity plant 24/7.

Another industrial plant which is considering solar energy as a viable main option for its power needs is the Japanese-owned Nakayama Technology Corporation in nearby Davao del Sur. The plant employs 1,010 workers at its seven hectare plant site in Bgy. Cogon, Digos City, Its siding board factory and has a capacity of 1,500 granite wall panels daily. It also manufactures brick tiles made from indigenous materials.

“We are in talks to construct a 1.6MW solar plant for their factory,” said Amado V. Santos, vice president-

marketing, Scintillant Corporation, distributor of Enfinity Philippines Renewable Resources Inc. (EPRRI).

EPRRI, the local arm of Belgian renewable energy developer Enfinity, has committed to push through with its planned solar power portfolio in the Philippines despite the low feedin-tariff (FiT) rate granted for solar power generation, said Santiago S. Navarro, managing consultant/deputy general manager, enfinity Philippines Technology Services Inc. Enfinity is the world’s 6th largest solar developer with annual revenues of 500-million euro and projects with a combined capacity of 500MW as of 2012. It plans to roll out a 500MW solar power portfolio in the Philippines over the next 3-5 years.

It has 11 sites under development mainly in the National Power Corporation’s Small Power Utilities Group (SPUG) in various islands in Mindanao.

Data from the Department of Energy show the 11 projects total 53MW with four small (1-2MW) projects in Luzon, 21MW in Cebu City and the nearby Mactan Export Processing Zone, and five small projects in Zamboanga City, Sultan Kudarat, Tawi-Tawi and Surigao del Norte.

“The other Mindanao projects are for SPUG areas. We are awaiting DOE/NPC circular as to how we are going to be paid, and then we can begin the projects,” Mr. Navarro said.

“We are going to all areas approved for us by DOE including far-away regardless of perceived security concerns.”

Enfinity has two service contracts, 50-MW Clark Freeport Zone solar power project in Mabalacat, Pampanga; and the 30-MW Cavite Export Zone solar power project in Rosario, Cavite.

“A third DOE service contract has been awarded to us: 20 MW in Digos, Davao del Sur,” he said. “It's in same category as Clark (50MW) and Cavite Peza (30MW). These were predevelopment contracts awarded to us by DOE in pursuit of the FiT projects.

As you know, DOE has now "converted" these to first come- first serve, but we are still continuing with our efforts.”

3,471 N.Min youth train under C4TP Cagayan de Oro City – A ro u n d 3 , 4 7 1 yo u n g people (ages 18-30) took Tec h-Voc Training under the joint program of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) dubbed as Cash for Training Project (C4TP).

The program intends to assist 4,695 youths in the region who cannot afford to enroll in degree programs and who wish to find employment.

C4TP is being implemented regionwide with the following breakdowm of slots: Bukidnon - 1,050 , Camiguin - 250 , Lanao del Norte - 925 , Misamis Occidental - 893 , and Misamis Oriental 1,577. These beneficiaries will become certified TESDA Specialitas by May 2013.

C4TP is a training program that responds to the government’s thrust in providing s u s t a i n a b l e i n t e r ve n t i o n to improve the plight and condition of the youth and empower them through skills training and assistance towards gainful employment and entrepreneurial activities.

stated that the program is implemented in two (2) independent components: training for self-employment (Hanapbuhay) and training for wage-employment (Trabaho).

For self-employment, the program is conducted onsite, school-supervised or thru partner NGOs. For wage employment, the program is organized and conducted in a TESDA-registered training provider, and after graduation, jobs-bridging activities will be conducted to facilitate their entry to jobs.

The qualifications with most number of enrollees/ beneficiaries are Computer Hardware Servicing NC II and Shielded Metal Arc Welding NC II for self-employment (Hanapbuhay) and wagee m p l o y m e n t ( Tr a b a h o ) , respectively.

On top of the skills training program, the youth will also be given employment/ entrepreneurial opportunities through the Jobs Bridging Event and TESDA Specialista Program of TESDA. A Jobs Fair/Jobs Birdging program was also held May 1 at the SM CDO Carparkin coordination with DOLE 10 in relation to the 111th Labor Day Celebration.

CAGAYAN DE ORO - In its bid to create new capacities to meet Mindanao’s surging power needs, the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) c hallenged the region’s cooperatives to explore potential investments in renewable energy to help address the island-region’s lingering power deficit.

“We are c hallenging MASS-SPECC to look at the viability of investments in power generation, specifically small hydro and biomass generation,” said Romeo Montenegro, MinDA’s Director for Investment Promotion and Public Affairs Office (IPPAO).

“Mindanao is facing power issues, but if you look at it in a different perspective, there are also opportunities.

You can take advantage of the increasing demand for power by exploring investments in renewable energy,” Montenegro told the 500-strong delegation of the 44th Mindanao Coop Leaders Forum.

The forum dovetailed with the 39th General Assembly of the Mindanao Alliance Self-Help Society – Southern Philippines Educational Cooperative Center (MASSSPECC) held recently in Cagayan de Oro City.

MASS-SPECC is a secondary cooperative federation with a membership of 300 primary cooperatives a c ro s s M i n d a n a o, s o m e of whic h are considered billionaire coops that have the capacity to invest in power generation projects.

“While our ser vices are traditionally savings and credit, a few of our cooperatives have initiated addressing power shortage in their locality by bringing in micro-solar power to off-grid areas in Misamis Occidental and Zamboanga del Sur,” said Gadwin E. Handumon, MASS-SPECC Chairman.

Tommy was born literally half on July 13, 1991 at Mabatao Salvador, Lanao Del Norte. He has seven brothers and the succeeding son from the oldest.

At a very young age he already experienced the abuses and neglect by his family. When he was Ten years old, his parents got separated, and it was the very last time he saw his father. He did not finish his high sc hool years due to his mother's stepfather.

A one-stop-shop processing and facilitation center for Mindanao’s renewable energy

power projects is also being developed by MinDA in order to fast track the approval of renewable energy power projects in the region.

The move is designed to attract more renewable energy investments in Mindanao.

“We want to be very aggressive in promoting renewable energy specifically hydro and biomass because new capacities estimated at 1000 megawatts coming in between 2016 to 2018 will consist largely of fossil fuelbased power plants,” said Montenegro.

He explained that by pushing for the viability of biomass as a major potential source of power will not only increase t he s har e o f r e newabl e energy in Mindanao’s power mix, but will also allow smaller players to come into the power sector and d e m o c r a t i z e ow n e r s h i p o f p owe r ge n e ra t i o n i n Mindanao.

Social Justice If you stare at the face of political dynasties and see a social justice issue, then you are not alone.

The shared argument is that the attainment of social justice among the poor and the dispossessed, the unlettered and the under-skilled, the unborn and the aged, and the rest of agonizing humanity has been hindered, impeded and exacerbated by dynasties of the political kind.

A political dynasty is control of governmental authority by a family, starting with the paterfamilias, the wife, children and close relatives by means of undue advantage, whether by rank, wealth or position, including corruption of the election process, to the exclusion of others over an indeterminate period.

The political dynasties are taipans of government.

Because of their compelling presence, political dynasties build and preserve the power structure of society, and thus suffuse the culture with their own dynamics and ethos.

This is the case of the Mongol

Genghis Khan and the succeeding dynasties.

They became a dominant force in the syncretic growth and the economic development of what is now China.

The English monarchies in the past and the present are essentially dynasties.

So too are the kings and emperors and the tribal chieftains of great nations in Asia, such as Japan, Thailand, Saudi Arabia.

The capacity of the dynasty to continue is ensured via a succession of first-born male heirs. In many instances in Europe, the perpetuation of the monarchist system of government is done via inter-marriages among socalled noble families.

Lore, history and literature describe the throne, that is the symbol of authority and rectitude, as a "throne of blood."

Do you engage yourself in chatters while on crowded unfamiliar places? Do you go allfriendly and break the silence in awkward moments? I do.

I realized that there is more to life when you open up and while away your time in little conversations than get holed up in your own solitary world.

This happened to me quite a lot lately. Either they initiate the conversation or I start the ball rolling.

I find fun in talking to strangers but hey, not in a creepy and perverted kind of way!

I even welcome such distractions especially in boring and dragging moments.

They fill-up the void while allowing you to appreciate the lives of other people and get to know their thoughts, views and experiences.

Some tell exciting stories that boggle the mind while others just share their ordinary day to day struggles.

Whatever they tell me, I gobble them all up and get absorbed in the moment as I enter the world he or she allows me to experience.

Just a day ago, I took a taxi and the driver asked me on my political views. I didn't mind being

asked, so I shared what was on my mind.

Although we had opposite opinions, his take on the matter opened my mind on what people on the other side of the political fence are thinking.

I never hated him for not being on my side, I was even happy that even though we may have opposing views but we discussed it healthily while heading on the same journey.

And that did not end my encounters with strangers lately. I was recently caught up in a very humid and crowded pre-departure area at the airport.

I was feeling a little agitated so I moved restlessly in my seat.

While silently complaining, I did not notice that my mobile phone fell from my lap.

Then a lady approached and tapped my arm, when I turned to look, she was smiling and handed me my phone.

I thanked her for being kind and she then started our little conversation.

I found out how that she was a contract worker in Pasig and had been stuck in the airport for hours now since the plane she was to take got delayed again.

I told her to not to worry the

plane might be arriving any minute.

My plane was leaving first, so I stood up and bid her farewell. As I was entering the cabin, there was a lady in front of me busy taking photos of herself.

When she noticed that I was staring, She got embarrassed and smiled.

I smiled back and took my own phone to take “selfies” (selfpictures) too. Her smile widened. I was with her on this somewhat silly yet fun self-pic taking.

It turns out, her seat is next to mine. When the plane ascended, we sat silently.

But when the complimentary coffee arrived, she took out a box of pastels and handed me one. I obliged and gladly took the bun.

There began the one hour of talks about her daughter, my work, her short stay in Cebu as well as my transfer from my hometown to CdeO. We laughed and we didn't mind the sharp ringing in our ears from the altitude and cabin pressure.

As I deplaned and rode the cab to my destination, I smiled and realized that if only we give ourselves a chance to loosen up JAEN|Page 11

Should you be P’noy, would you agree (under his watc h) to replace the existing premier airport named after his father (a Filipino hero) to your nemesis’s father Diosdado Macapagal International Airport?

Wouldn’t it be easier to c hange the title of the airport after all he succeeds in all his directives? Regardless of the pragmatic options presented all considering; after losing the families crown jewels the “hacienda Luisita” would you agree now the airport be relocated totally if not be presented as a secondary airport.

The opening of an alternative airport or the total replacement is simply unacceptable so it seems now that this is slowly coming to relevance.

However to be a true statesman one’s personal interests should be put aside to give way to progress and prosperity for the greater good, right?

The options soon to be presented by Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya /DOTC to the President mentions possibly the reclaiming the Laguna Bay or Sangley and erasing the existence somehow of Clark whic h is already functional with parallel runways now in use.

Is there even logic with reclaiming Laguna Bay with the perennial flooding they cannot even address.

Then of course there is the cost according to Biazon (presented personally by him in the Ayala Alabang forum last Thursday); there are some 17,000 cities affected by the bay and some 320 billion to fix the bay (isn’t this BS to the highest levels).

There is even talk that an area in Bulacan that may fit the requirement. Parameter set is the distance between the NCR and the facility as if airports all around the world need to be conveniently in the city for the ric h.

The billions required for suc h a project and the10-year gestation it requires accordingly sets the stage for the long term facility to be dictated upon today.

Or is the decision to be made now to compromise the location for good while in power? Should this be the sensitivities of the project, the airport for sure is doomed.

The NAIA or better known the “Ninoy Aquino” International Airport has reac hed maximum traffic and continues to engage more flights into a facility whose tarmac is stretc hed to capacity.

This gateway facility to the rest of the world is now a bottle neck for Filipino’s traveling as well for foreigners be it for tourism or business.

All considering, the sensitivities of the issues are real and should you fill in the shoes for the president is no joke.

We need to remember after the presidency there is still life thereafter and should you have to live through this circumstance how can you truly find peace be it in family or the community as a whole with an incompetence you have garnered as to our brand.

Lead is a substance that we commonly encounter: from house paints to water pipes to children’s toys and even in beauty products.

The dehydrating heat of the summer season will definitely jeopardize your voice if you are not careful about it.

Better triple your water dose before it’s too late, especially to the singers out there. Why? Water is one of the important essentials for a healthy body and voice. Just like the automobile as it uses oil to run its engine, we need water to run our instrument the vocal cords. Without water the quality of our voices are greatly affected.

Now when we drink beverages that contain sugar, caffeine, alcohol and other unnatural substances such as sweeteners and milk then we are making our engine oil into sludge. Naturally our vocal cords are coated with a thin, clear and water mucous that helps in maintaining the elasticity of the cords while it also continuously lubricates them as you speak and sing.

When our cords become dehydrated, the thin watery mucous becomes yellowish, thick- sludge like, thus it limits their elasticity and their ability to vibrate freely.

With the demands of speaking and singing, one must keep his/her voice well lubricated at all times.

No soda, coffee, tea, juice or alcohol can provide this lubrication, only plain water. Other vocal sprays are also good for vocal support but nothing beats water.

One of the most important questions we ask each individual as financial programming consultants goes like this: "Why do you strive hard to work and earn money each day? What is it all for?" In short, what drives and motivates you to do so?

Questions like this often stir up our inner philosophical musings. The world does not require you to have to get up and do work for the day, it's a requirement you set for yourself!

And it's a personal decision whether you do so or not. But by not doing so, what does it mean?

What effect will it have on your daily grind? It has been said that for us to have enough reason to seek and to do the "how to's," we should know and understand the "why's" first.

Apart from many other alternatives, there is one common answer almost all individuals have to this question. And that is "retirement."

Whether somebody is tied up with a family or not, everybody seems to like being able to retire in comfort someday! But what does "retirement" really mean for you?

Different people have varied concepts of being "retired." But for purposes of brevity, and to limit our discourse strictly within the confines of its financial aspects, retirement could perhaps best be defined as "that stage of your life where you are not obliged to strive hard to earn your keep, because you can live assured having enough monetary buffer to back you up indefinitely even for the rest of your lifetime."

The great business philosopher Jim Rohn says it with distinction: "Do what you have to as quick as you can, so you can do what you want to as long as you can."

For most, retirement usually "comes" at age 60 or 65. But for all, what is most empowering is to understand that "retirement" is something that either comes by choice or by force! When it comes to making personal choices, some people would like to be able to retire "early" so they would be able to enjoy doing what they want to for the rest of their lives without the constraint of being forced to work just to pay for the bills and make ends meet. Nevertheless, it would do you best to consider one very important aspect by asking: "What if it comes by force?"

You retire by force if even though you may have the will to get up and work, yet you don't any more have enough strength to do so. Like company vehicles as physical business assets, our bodies do surrender to obsolescence. Whether you like it or not, illness and disability at times rears its ugly head somewhere. Oftentimes, a little tinkering here and there might do the trick.

But there comes a point in time that replacement is the most cost-effective option, and you become a non-performing asset.

Time will take its toll, whether you face reality or not. What makes the difference is how prepared you are. Whether you retire by choice or by force, make it your decision to retire in comfort.

Start preparing now!

This was the Pancho I knew from a few years back - always on the deep end of his “emo” and creation, impassioned like a tragedy but mostly ironic, like if

Kenny McCormick goes to Sesame Street to sing love songs to the Cookie Monster.

As former guitarist of Story of My Scab and Maria Mystar and current guitarist for Annalogue, Pancho has been on and off the signature parka, but never off the musical route. Like all good obsessions, Pancho’s music paid off. In 2012, he was

1. What musical instruments do you play?

I play guitar, sometimes I play bass. I also play air drums.

2. What was the first instrument that you learned to play?

I first learned how to play guitar in 4th grade then lost interest in it, learned to play again in 6th grade.

3. Who are your influences? Which musician do you think most inspired you?

There are too many but right now I’m being influenced by Matt Fazzi (Happy Body Slow Brain, former guitarist of Facing New York and Taking Back Sunday). He’s too awesome and he makes the sexiest songs ever.

4. Which musician/s did you learn from?

My brother, the rest I learned by ear. I never really watched those basic guitar instructional videos because I’m too lazy to set up the VCR player.

5. What kind of music do you make?

I really don’t know but friends describe it as Pop Rock or Acoustic Rock… Basta under Rock na genre but it’s up to the people where to put it, really.

6. Where are you in your creative life now?

Right now I’m in the zone that I call “The Lag Zone” because when I write a song, it starts fast but then it gets slow because I run out of ideas but the song eventually gets done in time.

7. Who do you listen to now? What's on loop in your player these days?

I listen to a lot of new pop punk bands right now like The Story So Far, Transit, Half Hearted Hero, Turnover but I also have my favorites in the playlist like Facing New York, Happy Body Slow Brain and Mock Orange.

8. What are you working on now?

I am currently working on a new song that I’m planning to record and release in the next few months.

9. Are you with a group now?

I’m currently the guitarist of this band called Annalogue with RQ Quirante (vocalist/synth), Tatski Lagrosas (bass) and Kuya del Rosario. We play anywhere but the usual venue for our gigs is at Punchbowl. I’m also forming another band named, The Common Cassette for my songs that are outside Annalogue’s type of music.

10. How do you prepare for a performance?

It’s usually a band practice 1 or 2 days before the gig just to refresh and a run through of the songs an hour before the set.

When bands start writing more of their own songs instead of doing covers gig after gig and more people start to watch local gigs.

13. Is there a music scene in Cagayan? What do you think of it?

The music scene here in Cagayan is still alive but still struggling. The scene here needs more support from the locals.

14. Where do you plan to take your music?

What is the next level for you?

Anywhere! Just as long as there’s still someone who’s supporting and listening to your music. Next level for me is to release an EP. 15. When do you write music? Where? How does creation star t? Who/what are you with when you are writing?

When inspired or when I’m feeling down, writing in that way makes the song feel more genuine. I usually write when I’m completely alone with a guitar, no distractions = song gets done.

16. If there is one musician whose career you'd like to have, who? Why? Gene Simmons! He’s got everything!

17. If you are to create a super -group, who would you pick and put together?

I’d pick Carlos Tanada on guitars, Matt Fazzi on vocals, Steven Padin on drums and Jani on bass/samples (hihihi). Music would sound sexier with those people together in a band.

18. Name five musicians/groups you think any music lover/musician should hear before he dies.

I’m more of a band guy, so I’ll name five bands: Happy Body Slow Brain, Earth Mover, Copeland, Up Dharma Down and Kaapin.

19. Which album do you think best soundtracks your life?

Create! Create! Create! No matter how weird or bad your song may sound to other people, someone will listen and will like your craft.

Kickstart, ProudCloud open doors to new RP startups "Five months of awesome to build a great product." This is the promise of Launchgarage, the accelerator program steered by incubator company Kickstart Ventures, Inc. and web engineering firm Proudcloud.

Launchgarage recently announced the opening of applications from May 1 to 31, 2013, for the second program run, which kicks off in early July and culminates in a Demo Day in November 2013.

“Launchgarage guides Philippine startups from the idea stage, to the build, and the launch. We provide much-needed support and resources for early stage startups in the Philippines, helping them find the fastest, most efficient technical and business solutions, as well as the mentorship and community support that every startup founder needs,” said Jay Fajardo, Project Director of Launchgarage and founder and CEO of Proudcloud.

Minette Navarrete, Strategy Mentor of Launchgarage and co-founder and President of Kickstart Ventures, concurs. "Innovation and entrepreneurship are tough, and startup founders face challenges every step of the way. The Launchgarage program guides founding teams through the earliest, most difficult part of the startup journey, creating the momentum to launch an actual product out into the market, and help it to scale intelligently."

The program runs from July 1 to November 30. It starts with each accepted team being handed seed funding of US$30,000 (more than Php1.2 million) as their operating capital, representing Launchgarage's 15% equity in the business. In addition, team members -called "Garageheads" -- are given hands-on workshops, training and consultation sessions focused on subjects, skills and philosophies ranging from Lean Startup to relevant legal issues and business principles needed to launch and operate a successful venture in the Philippines and the region.

Startup teams have access to various resources from partners and sponsors including Globe Telecom, Amazon Web Services, Zendesk, and the Globe, Ayala and SingTel Regional Seed Network executives.

Likewise, teams are exposed to a network of mentors composed of veteran founders, industry analysts, tech business executives, angel investors, and venture capitalists, both from the Philippines, and from other regions around the world.

The mentors provide one-on-one advice to the teams to help refine their product and provide valuable insight on direction and viability.

Throughout the program, mentors help the teams refine their pitch.

Each team is given multiple opportunities to pitch to a panel of venture capitalists for early critiques and maybe even additional interim funding.

The program culminates in a final pitching day in front of venture capitalists, angel investors, and peers.

The first batch of Launchgarage teams or Garageheads ended their five month incubation period last April 15 and have all launched products into the market, and have been part of Echelon Philippine Satellite 2013.

Farmers and fisherfolks celebrate

Through Presidential Proclamation No. 33, signed on March 21, 1989, the month of May was officially declared as the “Farmers and Fisherfolks’ Month” to give due recognition to the invaluable contribution of farmers and fisherfolks for the development, improvement, management and conservation of the agriculture and fishery sector. The Department of Agriculture – Regional Field Office 10 (DA-10) joins the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in the opening of the said celebration. According to DA-10 Regional Executive Director Lealyn A. Ramos, that despite the region is more into assisting farmers who cultivate lands, she explained that the office also welcomes in giving aid to fisherfolks, particularly in the form of livelihood projects to complement the group’s main source of income and living. Further, she imparted that next year; the province of Misamis Oriental will enroll for the implementation of projects under the Local Poverty Reduction Action Plan/Bottoms-Up Budgeting to alleviate the conditions of poverty-stricken communities. To signify the region’s support, Dir. Hapitan said. “In contrast, it costs P250, 000 per hectare for a fully irrigated facility and infrastructure for rice production.”

“We are able to produce 8,000 liters of bioethanol per hectare per year. At P45 per liter exfarm, this will translate to P360, 000 annual revenue per hectare.”

In contrast, a palay yield of 100 cavans per hectare will only mean 200 cavans annual yield per hectare, assuming two cropping period per year. At P600 per cavan of palay, annual revenue for palay production would only be P120, 000 per hectare per year, he added.

“With the additional revenues generated from idle lands converted t o p ro d u c t i ve b i o e t h a n o l f a r m s, our country can easily generate a cash surplus that would allow us the flexibility we need to meet our various food requirements,” Engr. Hapitan noted (with a smile!)

Traditionally viewed as the poor man’s staple in times of drought, fami ne or other di sasters, sweet potato (camote) has the potential to serve both its traditional role as a food staple in the rural areas but could step up to become a strategic source of bioethanol for the country’s energy and transportation industries.

“Through cooperatives managed by farmers themselves, sweet potato farming and bioethanol production can transform marginal farmers and farmlands into key agents of change for the upliftment of the national economy through village level processing of camote bioethanol for both energy and food security,” Engr. Hapitan said.

Search for Corn Quality Awardees begins Following the lead of the Agri-Pinoy Rice Program’s Rice Achiever Awards, the Department of Agriculture (DA), this time, launches the first ever nationwide search for the set of Agri-Pinoy Corn Quality Awardees.

According to Larry ER. Paraluman, regional corn program coordinator of DA-10 said, the competition which nearly has P 29 million prizes at stake is open to all provinces, cities and municipalities, provincial and municipal corn coordinators, and agricultural extension workers (AEWs) part in the implementation of the DA AgriPinoy Corn Program.

The search, he added, seeks to recognize the achievement of top performing local government units (LGUs) with outstanding contribution to the corn industry; thereby intensifying the strong DALGU partnership in the production of quality and safe corn and sustaining awareness of the LGUs to the DA’s initiatives for corn.

Paraluman further said that the Corn Quality Awards will commence in 2013 for two cropping seasons. Initially, the search shall grant P3M to the top five provinces and P500,000 to the top 25 cities/municipalities in terms of infrastructures, farm equipment and machineries, etc.

Meanwhile, the top 5 provincial and 25 municipal corn coordinators will each receive P20,000 and P 15,000 cash prize, respectively.

Top 100 AEWs, on the other hand, will get P10,000 each.

Paraluman also explained that region 10 agreed to the following timeline of activities: April 30, 2013 – submission of letter of intent for those interested; May 15, 2013 – submission of all technical and administrative requirements to the DA-10 office; May 16-30, 2013 – evaluation period by the region; and June 15, 2013 – submission of final nominees to the national steering committee.

The awarding rites is slated to be held some time in October of this year.

Finally, look to the future by learning from the past.

Question the assertions of leaders who hold on to their positions at any cost. Recognize the traps and the trappings of politics.

Resist the temptations and the blandishments.

I endeavor to teach truths that are soul-nourishing and life-enriching. There is new meaning and purpose in my life. I feel I have found my calling, which is preaching.

Among adults, there is what we call as occupational hazards that increase the risk for lead poisoning, like those that are stationed in gasoline stations, mechanics who handle batteries, and those in charge with making our homes beautiful places to live in, the carpenters and painters. Lead can contaminate water, air and soil.

Children may present with irritability, loss of appetite, weight loss, vomiting and abdominal pain.

If one were to notice changes in the behaviour and

attitude of one’s child, then, one must not hesitate to seek consultation.

Adults on one hand may present with changes in their mental functions, and have elevated blood pressure, pain or numbness of the extremities, mood disorders and if one were pregnant, a miscarriage.

Seizure is not an uncommon presentation in patients who also have very high levels of lead in their body.

Diagnosing lead poisoning will require a simple blood test, taken either from a finger prick or extracting from a vein.

Lead is measured as microgram/decilitre (mcg/ dl), and for adults, any result above 10 or 6 for children is considered UNSAFE. Microscopic evaluation of the red cells will also alert the attending physician of the possibility of lead poisoning.

Treatment is directed at removing the lead from the system through chelation or the use of EDTA in order to bind the lead and remove it from the body.

More than diagnosing and treating the problem, Lead Poisoning is one of those diseases that can be prevented.

There are simple things that we each can do: the most basic of which is washing of hands.

Where water pipes are old, it is good to run cold water for at least a minute or two prior to use.

When preparing milk formula, it is good practice not to use hot tap water.

Should paint renovations be in the offing, it is to one’s best interest to instruct the painters or carpenters not to practice sanding as the removed paint debris can contaminate the house dusts.

It would be better to cover the old paint with a new coat of paint instead.

For dirty surfaces, a wet damp cloth must be used in cleaning the area, thus removing whatever lead may have accumulated in the dust.
