Mayor bares priority thrusts TAGUM City, Davao del Norte––Mayor Allan Rellon met the 23 barangay heads on July 2 where he outlined several priority thrusts under his administration. The newly-installed chief executive said the construction of the new city hall will continue, saying the Australian-inspired building is a Tagum landmark. He talked about the creation of Purok Road Improvement Maintenance (PRIM) Task Force following the issuance of an Executive Order. A survey will also be done in all puroks (areas) in the city to determine which should be included in the priority list for road improvement. Other important matters the mayor imparted to barangay heads included the improvements to be done on the Old City Hall, the city’s plan of reviving Barangay Financial, Burial and Medical Assistance, and scholarships for deserving students, and his program called the Eagle Wings. Rants and raves

By ACE R. MORANDANTE of DavaoToday.com

DAVAO City––Their series of protests had one clear message. They only want to protect the Filipinos from the risks of war between foreign countries, a war that is not of our own making. Thus, any form of “arrangement” that would allow the temporary, worse permanent, basing of foreign troops in the country is a big no-no for leftists led by the umbrella organization Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan). “The Aquino administration only puts at risk the lives of the people because the US government only wants to position their troops in our country with the objective of waging war See sham, page 11

Group launches anti-tobacco advocacy in Davao met DAVAO City, the first completely smoke-free city in Southeast Asia, played host to a regional meeting that will strengthen the movement to curb tobacco use throughout Southeast Asia. The meeting started on July 8 and will end today (July 10). Delegates from Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand,

and Vietnam converged in Davao––and shared lessons and best practices to implement and strengthen smoke-free policies in their respective communities. By the end of the conference titled, “SMOKEFREE LAWS: Strengthening its Enforcement Towards Building Model Smoke-free Cities in the ASEAN,” the Southeast Asian delegates will launch the “Smoke-Free

Cities ASEAN Network” or SCAN. The coalition will give support and strengthen policies and efforts to rid public places all over Southeast Asia of toxic tobacco smoke. The city of Davao is a fitting venue for the SCAN initiative, as the city is recognized as the first metropolitan city to be smoke-free not only in the Philippines

but the ASEAN region. SCAN aims to be a venue to consolidate efforts in expanding, promoting smoke-free cities and ensuring proper enforcement of the same. “We are pleased to be here in Davao City, the Philippines today, and much privileged to be holding this timely gathering of tobacco control movers from the ASEAN region. Davao City

is a city to emulate in many aspects, specially in their smoke-free efforts, and we are proud to host delegates from all over Southeast Asia,” said Southeast Asia Tobacco Control Alliance (SEATCA) Director Bungon Ritthiphakdee. The delegates gathered in Davao––anti-tobacco and health experts from governments, civil society, and See group, page 11
