CAGAYAN de Oro City––Instead of protecting and advancing Mindanao’s competitive advantage by developing more clean hydro power plants, the Department of Energy (DoE) is showing a bias and partiality to dirty coal-fired power plants to address the island’s worsening power problem, a renewable energy advocate claimed. Mindanao, the Philippines’ second-largest island group, is blessed with so much natural resources, especially water resources, that can be tapped as renewable energy source for cheap electricity in the island. “But Mindanao’s call for clean hydro power project developments has so far seem to remain unheeded by the Department of Energy, indicating a partiality towards approving fossilfuel based coal plants such YELL FOR THE LAST STRETCH. ZAMBOANGA City––A bomb explosion on Monday wounded a Muslim rebel in the restive province of Maguindanao in the southern Philippines, officials said. Col. Prudencio Asto, a spokesman for the 6th Infantry Division, said the bomb exploded just as members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters were passing near a government irrigation canal in the village of Lower Salvo in Datu Saudi Ampatuan town. “One BIFF member under Mohaiden Animbang was wounded in the blast, that’s what we have gathered so far. Reports also said that the BIFF members were on their way to attend a Kanduli,” he said, referring to a peace ceremony among warring Muslim clans. It was not immediately known who was behind the

other coal power plants from high-profile developers such as San Miguel and Ayala Group, among others,” lamented Greenergy Development, Inc. President Cerael C. Donggay, former National Power Corporation (NPC) vice president for Mindanao. Donggay’s Greenergy and the First Bukidnon Electric Cooperative (FIBECO) have initiated the P33 billion 300 MW Pulangi 5 Hydro Power Project in 2008. NGO opposes United Nations’ call to legalize flesh trade in PH By JOEY SEM G. DALUMPINES of Philippine Information Agency-Region 11

DAVAO City––A nongovernment organization (NGO) working for the welfare of women and children in prostitution here expressed opposition to the United Nations call to legalize the flesh trade worldwide in order to prevent the spread of humanimmuno virus (HIV). Jeanette Ampog, executive director of Talikala said BOMB | page 10 the best way to stop the

spread of the disease is to take women and children out of prostitution. She said women and children are at risk of infectious diseases because they are in prostitution. “Legalization will not protect prostituted women and children from being abused and manhandled if they insist on using protection like condoms. Legalization of prostitution will

only authorize the abuses and exploitation of women and children and will benefit more the industry and the people behind it,” Ampog said. She said that governments may rake in revenues for the legalization of prostitution but women and children in the trade will be stripped of their character and health. Ampog recommended that the government must address the demand side

of prostitution by penalizing men who solicit sexual services. She also said that government must also offer alternative livelihood activities and availability of all support services to women and children if it sticks on the UN call to legalize prostitution. Carina Sajonia, spokesperson of Talikala, Incorporated said giving women and children access to medical OPPOSES | page 10
