Donaire knocks out Mexican foe in 3rd round By Jelly F. Musico

PINOY boxing icon Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire knocked out Mexican Jorge Arce in the third round on Sunday to retain his World Boxing Organization superbantamweight title at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, USA. Donaire lived up to his promise to avenge the loss of Filipino boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao to Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez, scoring three knockdowns, including a powerful left hook that ended the fight at 2:59 of the third round. It was the same time that Marquez knocked out Pacquiao in the sixth round a week ago in their fourth encounter at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Donaire scored the first knockdown in the second round of their 12-round title

fight, prompting the Mexican warrior to brawl in the third round. The Filipino Flash, however, was unperturbed and tagged Arce with a powerful right hand, followed by a solid left uppercut that sent the Mexican to the canvas anew, with 13 seconds left in the third. Arce was able to get up to his feet again but could not escape the onslaught of the Filipino champion and put Arce down again with one second left in the third round. It was the fourth win by Donaire this year as he improved his ring record to 32-1 with 21 via stoppages while Arce dropped at 67-7-2 record. After the fight, Arce announced his retirement while Donaire said he might move up from 122 pounds to 126 pounds next year.

THE death toll caused by tropical cyclone “Pablo” continued to climb, reaching 1,020 as of Sunday morning while the estimated damage increased to P24.1 billion, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported. In its update, the NDRRMC said the number of injured persons also rose to 2,662 while 844 others remained missing. The highest number of dead totaling 962 was reported from Region 11 (Davao Region). The rest included 21

coming year. Benaldo also acknowledged the support of Mayor Vicente Y. Emano and Vice Mayor Caesar Ian Acenas as he promised to go around the 24 barangays in the next two months to continue the program and check on infrastructure and other projects. “When you do something good for the people, something good also happens to you,” he said as he announced his engagement to Brazilian model Daiana Menezes. Benaldo narrated the story of how he met his fiancée from that day in Manila when he first saw her while he was in a meeting with

lawyers to discuss projects for the resettlement area in the city for the Sendong survivors. “I hope you can visit us and boost the morale of the people of Cagayan de Oro,” were the words of the congressman after being introduced to Ms. Menezes. And the rest is history. Now, he said, the centerpiece project of the city’s resettlement area, which has 5,000 houses constructed under the leadership of Mayor Emano, has benefitted from the roads and drainage system completed under his PDAF. “Mas inspired ko karon,” Benaldo said.

As of Sunday, the NDRRMC said Pablo had affected 701,224 families or 6,203,826 people in 2,910 villages in 271 towns and 38 cities in 32 provinces. Of these, 230,453 fami-

lies or 987,349 people are staying in 60 evacuation centers. Damage caused by Pablo was estimated at P24,160,920,528.05 -- P7,761,431,310 in infrastructure, P16,350,529,805.05 in agriculture, and P48,959,413 in private properties. At least 63,040 houses were destroyed while 95,544 were partially damaged. The NDRRMC said 12 bridges and four roads are still not passable while 30 areas are experiencing power interruptions.

Meanwhile, the estimated cost of assistance for the affected families has reached P124.56 million. The Department of Social and Welfare Development (DSWD) has allocated P54,693,687.30; local government units (LGUs), P30,045,552.23; Department of Health (DOH), P26,099,032.70; non-governmental organizations/other government organizations, P10,257,002.40; and NDRRMC, P3,505,706. THINK a minute. Have you at one time been sick, but you knew that doctors and medicine could not help you? What did you do? Who did you go to? The village medicine man or woman for traditional medicine? Recently I read about a medical doctor who was very sick. But instead of treating himself or going to another medical doctor, even a traditional medicine man, he called a preacher. This doctor told the preacher that he was desperately sick, not in his body, but in his soul and conscience. The doctor said: “All my life I’ve carried this guilt and

Soul sickness Think A Minute Jhan Tiafau Hurst memories of all the wrong things I’ve done. My guilt has become like a disease or cancer that’s killing me inside, and I’m not able to find a cure for it!” The doctor asked the preacher to pray for him, and sure enough, the doctor was healed and free from his guilt. That doctor was right. You and I can never get free from the guilt of

our past wrongs. The cheap sex we had with that person who’s not our wife or husband. Our lying and stealing in business or at our job. Our getting drunk and beating up our own wife and children. Aborting our baby. These and many other memories of our wrongs continue to hurt and shame us wherever we go, so we

cannot escape. They’re inside our mind and conscience like a disease or cancer. It’s true: there is no medical doctor or traditional medicine that can cure our guilty conscience. Humans have no cure for it. Only God the Son can make you free and healthy. If you and I will simply admit we are guilty of all our sins and ask Jesus to give us His gift of forgiveness and new life, then our sick soul and conscience can finally be free from all our guilt! For your own health and happiness, why don’t you ask Jesus for His gift of forgiveness and new life today? Just Think a Minute.

Sendong opens the floodgates of huma compassion

10 P.M. DEC. 16, 2011. We have succeeded in breaching the enemy defenses. My special forces have penetrated the enemy’s stronghold. Our snipers in strategic corners picked up sentry guards. Demolition experts crawled and started blowing up power lines, buildings, tanks, and airstrips. The squadron of helicopter gunships have zeroed in on bunkers. Earlier, the Aurora bombers crippled Cris Diaz the enemy’s surface to air defenses allowing our helicopter gunships to cover our ground forces. Just as victory was at hand, a sudden power trip off occurred. Brown out! I was playing ‘games of generals’ with my computer when the sudden brown out took place. It was almost 11:30 in the evening. The rest of the members of the household had already gone to bed. I reached for our emergency lights and went to switch off all electrical switches. I made sure that locks of windows and doors are in place. Taking a last glimpsed on my car and making sure my guard dog (a mixture of 50 percent Great Dane and 50 per cent Belgian); I went out to the porch. Cold and gusty winds slapped my face. Without a flicker of light, darkness enveloped the whole surroundings. Trees and orchards swayed relentlessly as wild winds start to crunch on everything along its way. Typhoon ‘Sendong’ has started to lash its fury.

I went inside and went to bed. I tried to cover my ears as fiery winds incessantly blew hard accompanied by heavy rains. It was past 1:00 A.M. December 17, 2012. The world stood still. Five o’clock in the morning,Dec. 17, 2012, my wife and I went outside our rented house. We heard reports of flood and destruction along the Cagayan de Oro River. We went to the new bridge connecting Carmen and Nazareth. I was speechless as I watched people and rescue teams, mostly police and the military, retrieving unknown bodies from knee-deep mud. The disastrous flash flood occurred past 12 midnight at the height of typhoon ‘Sendong.’ In my years as a journalist, I have witnessed all kinds of disasters including flash flood. However, the flash flood spawned by typhoon ‘Sendong’ was different. I saw rows of houses and buildings completely washed out. I noticed vehicles and earth-moving equipment carried away and dumped in unlikely places. Typhoon ‘Sendong’ was a catastrophe that brought immeasurable damaged to lives and properties. Today, as the people of Cagayan de Oro commemorates the tragic incident; we offer nothing but solemn prayers to the departed loved ones. The incident taught a thousand lessons that unite people to work together to get the victims’ feet back on the ground. It was the indomitable spirit and the altruism of humanity that after a year of unforgettable tragedy the people of Cagayan de Oro have successfully moved on. React: crisguardian@yahoo.com

Hard life everywhere It seems the world is in crisis and everywhere in its four corners are experiencing some sort of difficulties in life. Nations from Europe to the MiddleEast, Latin America, Asia and everywhere are having same problems of lack of employment, food, medicines and everything else. There is scarcity in all matters that are usually needed everyday. This is because many of the capitalists which have been operating large business firms have gone low in its operations while others have closed business for some reasons. Some countries in Europe have real hard life for its people. In North America which used to be heaven to millions of immigrants, is having millions

The Striker Ben Emata Jr. of unemployed people too. Everywhere, it seems is having the same problem. People are stretching patience and are tightening their belt much harder now. Of course, everyone knows this is temporary and soon there will be sunlight at the end of the tunnel. Life is like this in the past and things turned to normal after a certain period of time. The Philippines is lucky because its people know

how to survive with whatever way no matter what. When they find out food is running low, they go to the farm and plant anything from rice to vegetables. They go fishing and go to the wilderness for anything useful. The country is rich with natural resources and everything you put on the soil grows. Filipinos know how to survive in the midst of crisis. No one ever died because of hunger no mat-

ter how poor a person is. Always he has something to eat. He knows herbal medicines for each illness and surely in the absence of modern science, a Filipino will live. Our government operates normally even during crisis because its people support it faithfully and honestly. There is no way the administration can collapse because the strength of support is strong and permanent. It never has in its history when people let loose its grip nor showed its loss of loyalty and love. No matter how they criticize their leaders, still the people support the government with sincerity and diligence. Filipinos understand its leaders. life | page 11

To align with the agency’s priority programs, the irrigators and farmers association have served as the DA’s partners to carry out the task in attaining food sufficiency and global competiveness of the country’s grains. Accordingly DA RFU-10 thru the Agri-Pinoy Rice program recently turned-over to IA presidents Certificate of Award for one (1) unit hermetic storage worth P65,000.00 each. Above photo shows Regional Rice Program Coordinator Ms. Juliet Araos leads the ceremony together with National Irrigation Administration Regional Manager, Engr. Felix M. Razo, GrainPro Training Supervisor Joel Dator, and Pacifica Manager Nenita Tolentino. Meanwhile, Mr. Dator (top right) demonstrates to the IA presidents how to install the hermetic storage. not that complicated compared with those conducting researches among graduate students as requisite for the completion of the course. It basically starts from the development of questions which are answered by the collection of data. It is an action because it implies that the practitioner will be acting as the collector of data, the analyst and the

interpreter of results. An action research is a quest for knowledge on how to improve and on how things can be done better. It is actually very specific like an action research pertaining to issues in the classrooms and in the school. It is cyclical because once the problem or the question is answered, it does not end there but

the results obtained can be reassessed and be improved furthermore to make it even better. An action research is indeed beneficial to the school and this is in strong cognizance with the SchoolBased Management program. Action research is an immediate response to the unique situation in every school. Advertorial

JCI Sendong Memorial Wall Project Bai Lawanen, Mindanao’s first all-lady chapter of Junior Chamber International (JCI) in the Philippines, has conceptualized a community project dubbed as “JCI Sendong Memorial Wall Project.” The JCI came up with the project primarily to give those grieving families,

Gigi Go shared the same feeling- and so even without the initial funding to start the constructionwe chose to start building it despite the financial concerns.” JCI Sen. Cesar is the project chair of the Memorial Wall. But in the middle of the construction of the tribute wall, financial assistance started pouring in. Fellow Kagay-anons abroad reached out to help, including private companies like Cepalco and Limketkai Center, Rep. JV Ejercito, and fellow JCI Chapters like JCI-Manila and other private individuals who

On the 8-foot by 12-foot size memorial wall, made of romblon marble, the names of those who died, including those who are still missing, due to Sendong are engraved. This tribute will stand with honor and dignity at Gaston Park, fronting the Saint Augustine Church. JCI Sen. Gean TulangCesar, Past President of the Chapter and Past National Vice President for JCI Northern Mindanao, said: “It was a project that came about without considering the cost and the magnitude of the project. shared similar intentions of having a place for serenity and refuge for families that are left behind. Despite the political bickerings, Cagayan de Oro Mayor Vicente Emano did not turn his back to give his support to the project. “After all, he too believes that project like this should be given utmost importance,” said Cesar. Today (December 17, 2012), the JCI Bai Lawanen together with Parasat Cable TV and ABS-CBN Northern Mindanao, will stage series of event at Gaston Park to commemorate the first year anniversary of the Sendong tragedy. The Memorial Wall will be unveiled officially today to be followed by a special mass of which hundreds of candles and flowers will adorn the memorial wall site. A concert at the park will thereafter follow which will feature inspirational songs from local artists like Ian Nuer, David Mercado, Arlyn Baqui, and The DOT Singing Ambassadors among others. Talents from ABS-CBN Cagayan de Oro will also be attending. The public, especially the families of the victims, are encouraged and invited to join in honoring their loved ones at 5 p.m. today.

A good number have mismanaged the country but still they forgive and forget and make intact the system. In many countries, the people defend so much in their governments. They rely on employment from big firms as well as assistance from their leaders. And when there is a collapse in these firms and slow down in the financial state of their governments, they go hungry and fall. In the United States of America for instance people defend so much on welfare given by the government. They were used to assistance and there is no way they can survive without the support of the establishment. It is so nice the country is wealthy, solid and stable

and it is able to support its people no matter what. One thing good there is peace throughout the world. People can move freely and still do anything needed to augment survival . Nobody lives in fear. No one is afraid to go out anytime of day. There is freedom everywhere and friendship too. This thing makes life much easier and possible even in times of difficulty of living. Certainly, there are isolated disturbance in peace in some countries but do not necessarily affect the lives of people in other places.

Yasay said the projects are “for the children’s future” as he urged the barangay councils to see to the maintenance of the two-classroom school buildings in the coming years. The mayor said he hopes that Opol would be able to construct two school buildings every year, noting that there are 16 elementary schools in the municipality. He said each building was built at a cost of P1-million sourced from the Special Education Fund and the 20% Development Fund of the local government unit. Yasay was accompanied by Vice Mayor Chizarina M. Ortigoza, Sangguniang Bayan members, and Department of Education district supervisor Dr. Amelia Q. Nacua in each of the formal turnover rites. The respective barangay officials, including Barangay Kagawad Jonas Bustamante of Barra, school principals and teachers also graced the events. In another development, Mayor Yasay said the municipality will bless on Monday a newly constructed multipurpose building to be used for the local government’s multisectoral agenda. The P4.5-million building was constructed by the municipal government with financial help from Senator Francis Pangilinan and former senator Juan Miguel Zubiri. “Opol’s development will only be fruitful if the marginalized sectors are involved,” Yasay said. He said the Padayon Pilipino leadership, including Misamis Oriental 2nd District Rep. Yevgeny “Bambi” Emano, will be invited to the blessing rites. “The Padayon Pilipino is always there to serve the people,” Yasay said.
