l 13 cops hurt in clash with rallyists at University of Southern Mindanao By Malu Cadelina-Manar KABACAN, North Cotabato (MindaNews ) – Thirteen cops, all assigned at the Cotabato Provincial Police Office (CPP0), were injured when they engaged in a scuffle rallyists outside the campus of the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) here around 3 a.m. today (Wednesday), a police official said. Sr. Supt. Danny Peralta, CPPO director, said their men were sent to the university located along the USM Avenue in the Poblacion to open the main gate so that the 12,000 college students and teachers can enter the school premises today. “But they were met with so much force and violence by the protesters so they also
had to protect themselves,” said Peralta. Of the 13 injured cops, seven of them were sent to the Kabacan Medical Specialist Center. They were identified as Ronald Abayasa, Bryan Valdez, Danilo Saburnito, Gerald Taniala, and Elmer Dizon, all with a rank of Police Officer 1; and Richard Balyesta and John Concepcion, both Police Officer 2. Supt. Leo Ajero, chief of the Kabacan PNP, said most of their men sustained injuries from stones thrown by the protesters and wood with nails on it. Mindanao cops cited for efficient gun ban drive ZAMBOANGA CITY (Al Jacinto) – Police authorities in Western Mindanao awarded 15 officers and lawmen for their outstanding accomplishments in the implementation of the total gun ban in Zamboanga Peninsula. ito Vaño, Jr. commended the awardees for a “job well done” in the implementation of the six-month gun ban ordered by the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) to ensure peaceful local and national polls in May. Hundreds of illegal weapons had been seized by policemen in various check-
points in the region since the ban began in January. Lawyer Francisco Pobe, COMELEC regional director, who was the guest of honor and speaker during the awarding ceremony held at the regional police headquarters in the village of Mercedes also praised the police officers.
