JV Estrada lauds launching of Lanao Norte scholarship grant VOL. 2, No. 234

TUBOD, Lanao del NorteSenatorial candidate Joseph Victor Ejercito Estrada of United Nationalists Alliance lauded the relentless efforts of Lanao del Norte provincial Governor Mohammad Khalid Q. Dimaporo in launching the scholarship grants for young Christians and Muslims aimed at building a a sustainable education program for the poor but deserving students in the province.

Based on official data, the province of Lanao del Norte has 1,700 scholarship grantees for the first and second congressional districts. Estrada said "ang tunay na hakbang para ma i angat sa kahirapan ay dapat may isang college graduate upang maka pag trabaho sa bawat pamilya.”

Further, Estrada said, he will continue to support the

provincial government in pursuing better education for the youth.

Estrada gained commitment of support for this coming May 2013 Elections.

PDEA agents identified the couple suspects as Zaidali and Zenaida Salip of Tambakan, Iligan

PDEA authorities swooped down on Salip residents in Tambakan Thursday morning after months of surveillance.

as ‘Dominique’ said that the raid even came a bit late since the raiding team obser ved that traces of the illegal drug were still prominent in a toilet bowl.

‘The couple must have flushed down a sizeable

amount of shabu in the toilet while authorities were about to launch a search,’ the agent said.

‘Shabu,’ or metamphetamine was a prohibited psychotic drug which proliferates in many parts of

the country.

MISAMIS ORIENTAL – Seven fully armed members of suspected New People’s Army rebel disarmed the farm guards of a gubernatorial candidate here Thursday morning.

Wen Militante, a Liberal Party candidate for vice governor in Misamis Oriental, reported that the armed men carted away two issued shotguns of the blue guards assigned in a family-owned coconut farm in Binakalan, Gingoog City.

He said his family hired blue guards to keep watch on their

15-hectare coconut farm due to rampant thieves in the area.

Militante said that the farm is located some 5 kilometers southwest of Gingoog outskirts. The raid on his coco farm was first to occur despite the guards and tenants assigned in the area received threats many times in the past, he added.

Militanted said that he has referred the incident to police authorities for proper action. ‘I am just thankful everybody was safe,’ Militante said. CD

Lawmakers call for modernization of Caraga Regional Hospital BUTUAN City - Caraga representatives to the Lower House are supporting the proposed modernization of Caraga Re g i ona l Hospita l in Surigao City.

According to the DOHCHD Caraga Regional Director Ariel I Valencia, all the nine lawmakers of the region have already signed

the letter of endorsement.

The facility is envisioned to become a teaching and training hospital at par with notable hospitals in the country, serving the region and the neighboring areas, especially the poorest of the poor.

A three-year development plan for this purpose will cost P500 million.

Potential fund source are the revenues from the sin taxes.

It was after World War II that the Philippine Congress appropriated for the construction of a 25 bed provincial hospital in the province of Surigao del Norte.

With the increasing number of admissions

and the new trends in h o s pi t a l m a n a g e m e nt and treatment, in February 11, 1997, by virtue of R.A. 8255, the Surigao Provincial Hospital was converted into Caraga Regional Hospital with an authorized bed capacity of 150.

Today, Caraga Regional Hospital is the core referral

hospital in the region even serving the neighboring provinces of Leyte.

However, with the increasing demand for quality care, as mandated by the Aquino Health Agenda through Kalusugan Pangkalahatan, it is imminent that Caraga Regional Hospital must expand its services, fully equip its

facilities, and build the capacities of the health worker to better serve the community.

CAMP Rodriguez, Butuan City - Justice was instantly served to a victim of a shooting incident in Brgy Taglatawan, Bayugan City afternoon of February 12, this year.

The victim, Alex Go Burdeos, 50 years old, was shot-dead by his perpetrator identified as Obar Calimbanan, with a caliber 9mm along Durian Street of said city.

Bayugan City Police Station revealed that Burdeos was riding on his red motorcycle along Durian Street when Calimbanan, also riding on a red motorcycle, arrived and shot Burdeos in the face killing him instantly.

In response to the incident, the police chased Calimbanan, but upon reaching Brgy Osmeña, he accidentally collided head-on with a black FUSO Wing.

Dragged 31 meters from the point of impact, Calimbanan sustained fatal injuries and died on-the-spot.

Agusan del Sur Crime Laboratory conducted scene of the crime operation at the first crime scene where they recovered two fired cartridges.

Recovered at the second crime scene, where Calimbanan died, was a 9mm Para Ordnance pistol, a magazine loaded with five ammunition, two live 9mm ammo inside the pocket of the suspect’s jacket, one magazine loaded with three live 9mm ammo, and one heat sealed transparent plastic sachet containing white crystalline substance believed to be shabu from the U-box of Calimbanan’s motorcycle.

Vehicles are now temporarily impounded at Bayugan City Police Station, while Dionril R. Salvan, driver of the FUSO van, was placed under the custody of Bayugan City Police Station, with the vehicle.

The remains of Burdoes and Calimbanan now lie in-state at the Mata Funeral Parlor in Bayugan City.

ST. CHRISTINE, LIANGA, Surigao del Sur – Four days before Valentines day, on February 10 this year, the 29th Infantry Battalion, in coordination with the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Surigao del Sur Chapter, has initiated a bloodletting activity, dubbed as “Dugo Ko, Buhay Mo”.

Headed by the battalion commander, Lt. Col. Virgilio F. Luna, the activity was held at the battalion headquarters, participated in by people from the barangays of St. Christine and Diatagon, both of Lianga town.

The donors from the battal-

ion and the civilian community came to the venue as early as 8:00 o’clock in the morning.

As blood out flowing towards the blood bags, the spirit of voluntarism was so high with hopes that each drop of blood will add hours, days, months and even years to the lives of those in need.

The activity ended the same day, but the spirit of voluntarism will continue within the hearts of the MATATAG troopers and also from the concerned individuals of the Municipality of Lianga and in the Province of Surigao del Sur. (SPM/asf)

Comprehensive GPH-MILF agreement, key to dev't - MILF chair

KORONADAL City - - -"Development can only be institutionalized, if there is a signed comprehensive compact that creates a new relation between us (MILF) and the central government," said MILF chair Al Haj Murad Ebrahim.

Chair Murad was with President Benigno Aquino III during the launching of the Sajahatra Bangsamoro Program at the Bangsamoro Leadership and Management Institute (BLMI) in Barangay Simuay, Sultan Kudarat town Maguindanao.

BLMI is situated about four kilometers from the MILF Headquarters in Camp Darapanan.

Chair Murad emphasized that peace can only be achieved once development is truly assured.

“Development is only effective when it is peoplecentered, when it is determined, and undertaken by its ultimate beneficiaries and when it empowers

people,” he said.

“It should not depend on the kind of President who sits in power,” he noted.

Meanwhile, the chair acknowledged President Aquino for his effort in personally launching several socio-economic projects for the Bangsamoro communities.

Sajahatra Bangsamoro Program is a socio-economic initiative of the national government that aims to uplift the health, livelihood, and education conditions of Bangsamoro communities.

It will be implemented through an inter-agency mechanism, including PhilHealth for the the provision of health insurance, De-

partment of Health for the upgrading of communitybased health services, as well as Commission on Higher Education and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority for the provision of scholarships and technical-vocational trainings.

The Department of Education will also come in to provide assistance to madaris (Islamic schools) and private schools while the Department of Social Welfare and Development will assist through its Conditional Cash Transfer and Food-for-Work Program.

KORONA DA L C ity Saylola Abdulmuin, 53, Monday, fulfilled a very special wish that is to be able shake hands with the President of the Republic of the Philippines.

Abdulmain, who is a resident of Zamboanga Sibugay province, was among the first beneficiaries for livelihood component of the Sajahatra Bangsamoro Program that President Benigno Aquino III, launched in Barangay Simuay, Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao, Monday.

"The Sajahatra Bangsamoro is a great help not only for my family but for the Bangsamoro communities," Abdulmuin said.

“I am thankful that the government is providing us with chances to earn income that could help families build brighter future,” he added.

For Guiamelin Ebrahim, 17, a student from Buluan town Maguindanao, Sajahatra is an “opportunity for poor students and young people and me to pursue and finish our studies.”

With a scholarship, she said further, the income that her father earns from working as a laborer at the banana plantation of the La Frutera Inc. in their area could be used to other

beneficial purposes for their family.

But for Abdulrahim Mama, 37, who described himself as “an unemployed person despite completing two master’s degree,” the Sajahatra Bangsamoro is a proof of the sincerity of the Aquino administration to achieve lasting peace in Mindanao.

“Considering the decades of conflict in Mindanao, I’ve have never expected that a President of the Philippine would ever come to our place and personally bring services needed to uplift Bangsamoro communities,” Mama said.

President Aquino is the first president of the Philippines to have set foot in MILF stronghold.

Barangay Simuay, where the Bangsamoro Leadership and Management Institute (BLMI) -- venue of the Sajahatra Bangsamoro Program launching -- is only four kilometers from Camp Darapanan, main headquarters of the MILF. At the launching, Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Sec. Teresita Quintos-Deles explained that the Bangsamoro Sajahatra is a concrete socio- economic initiative of the Philippine government that aims to uplift the health, livelihood

and education conditions of Bangsamoro communities.”

It will be implemented through an inter-agency mechanism, including PhilHealth for the provision of health insurance, Department of Health for the upgrading of communitybased health services, as well as Commission on Higher Education and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority for the provision of scholarships and technical-vocational trainings.

The Department of Education will also come in to provide assistance to madaris (Islamic schools) and private schools.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development will assist through its Conditional Cash Transfer and Food-for-Work Program.

DSWD Sec. Corazon “Dinky” Soliman said they are being assisted by the MILF leaders in the identification and assessment of possible programs and projects immediately needed by the target Bangsamoro communities.

She added that at least 100,000 families could benefit from the Sajahatra Bangsamoro Program.

KORONADAL City - Mayor Peter B. Miguel has announced the possible transfer of Police Regional Office (PRO-12) headquarters to this city.

The announcement was made by him in a meeting with PNP Director General Alan Purisima during the turn-over of command to newly-installed PRO-12 Regional Director Charles Turalba Calima.

It has been noted that former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has declared the City of Koronadal, as the regional political and socio-economic center of SOCCSKSARGEN, through Executive Order no. 304.

The PNP Chief has

pledged to transfer the PRO-12 headquarters to the city and personally asked Mayor Miguel to help facilitate the process, particularly in looking for a land with an area of more or less 15 hectares for the purpose.

According to Mayor Miguel, the transfer is a manifestation of the agency’s confidence in the city, more so that the pronouncement was made by their highest ranking official.

He assured the PNP of the city government’s prompt response to the request and looked forward to more Regional Line Agencies (RLAs) to relocate to the city.

To date, out of the 44 RLAs, 40 offices including bureaus have fully transferred and 11 have satellite offices in the city.

Meanwhile, in an interview with PC/Supt. Calima during his courtesy visit to the city last January 29, he said that the PNP Chief has instructed him to finalize the details the soonest possible time, especially that their office has already the budget for the purpose.

He added that the existing PRO-12 headquarters in Tambler, General Santos City will serve, as a training center should the move to relocate their office in the city shall have been realized.

RECENTLY, I attended the silver jubilee celebration of my class at the UERMMMC. It was great to be seeing classmates and friends after 25 years.

Most of us stayed the same in terms of physique, appearance and being kikay and magulo. But, what was amazing during the 1 week celebration were our golden Jubilarians.

They were our mentors then and are still active in their practices as well as in teaching the new generation of upcoming doctors.

It brings that nostalgic feeling and that gratitude of how they were able to impact our lives as students and as practitioners.

lyabinsk in Central Russia and which hurt more than a thousand people a sign of some sort? My answer is yes, it is a sign. First, it is a sign that meteorites and meteors, and other heavenly debris, really have the power to hit earth, and cause untold death and destruction. Second, it is a sign that Biblical prophecies are coming true.

Right off, I can think of two Biblical prophecies about meteorites and meteors and other heavenly debris hitting earth, in the form of stars falling from the sky. The first is found in Luke 21:25, where Jesus Christ, talking about indications that the world is about to end, says: “…`There will

be signs in the sun, moon and stars’…”

The second is found in Matthew 24:29, where Jesus says: “…`Immediately after the distress of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken’…” Judging from the photos and video footages of what hit Chelyabinsk, the meteorite looked like a star falling from the sky.

Now, take note: only one meteor hit Chelyabinsk, and yet the Bible says there will be “stars” (plural, or more than one) that will fall from the sky.

DA-MRDP builds more roads, opportunities in M’nao THERE are more road networks now in Mindanao, driving more economic opportunities for the rural people especially farmers.

Lealyn A. Ramos, Program director of the Department of Agriculture’s (DA) Mindanao Rural Development Program (MRDP) said the program has completed a total of 489.10 kilometer farmto-market (FMR) roads amounting to P995.23 million, among other projects under the rural infrastructure (RI) component.

“As the completed FMR measuring a total length of close to 500 kilometers and constructing

over 800 kilometers more we are not just creating a network of community linkages but also generating jobs and other opportunities in many rural areas,” Ramos said.

In the program’s report during the recently conducted World Bank review mission in Davao, the rural infrastructure component reflected that 71% of its 495 subprojects were FMRs; while communal irrigation projects account for 14%; potable water systems, 8%; bridges, 6%; and postharvest facilities mostly solar dryers and warehouses only 1%.

“These roads stimulates agricultural production by providing access to markets. It also facilitates in the transition from subsistence farming to market-oriented production, which we expect as we scale-up famers in the value-chain of various commodities,” said Ramos, who is also the regional executive director of DA office in Northern Mindanao.

Roads, Ramos added, also increase rural non-farm enterprise and even creates off-farm income thus providing further economic even employment opportunities.

She said that for a long time,

Mindanao badly needs roads that link communities especially the remote places to town centers, and the partnership of the local government units and the program has created impressive impact to respond this problem.

Ramos added the infrastructure projects have benefitted over 400,000 farmers who for the longest time had to endure bad road conditions and inaccessibility.

“Despite all these, we understand more still needs to be done.

The output of our partnership with the local government units and the DA regional field units

as forefront of implementation are a little achievement for the bigger need of better and more road networks,” she said.

These roads have also improved the rapid and easy access of the residents to hospitals, increased attendance of children at school and enhanced the LGUs delivery of social services.

“Some LGUs testified that with better roads they could actually conduct office caravans in remote areas where all the divisions of the LGU go from barangay to barangay," Ramos said. (Sherwin B. Manual/DAMRDP)

Unfortunately, we have yet to see the many erring motorists guilty of this infraction arrested by RTA traffic enforcers or policemen stationed in the area. Worse, motorcyclists frequently use this pedestrian lane as a short cut to the other side further putting the helpless pedestrian at risk. What’s the grade school students, disabled and old folks crossing at this busy interesection to do?

38 onsite, offsite reloc sites established for landless poor

CAGAYAN de Oro City––A total of 13,586 families had been served by the city government’s relocation project.

The status report submitted by Nila Padla, OIC of the Estate Management Division, to Mayor Vicente Emano and to the City Council committee on urban and rural poor chaired by Councilor Alexander Dacer indicates that these families are occupying the 38 relocation sites acquired by the city under the Piso-Piso Program.

The number of families settled in onsite relocation sites as of 2012 has reached 8,407 and in offsite relocation sites, 1,816, or a total of 10,223 family-beneficiaries.

This is aside from the houses and lots constructed for Typhoon Sendong survivors.

In line with the social justice program implemented by Mayor Emano, the city established offsite relocation sites at Calaanan, Canitoan, Consolacion, Iponan, Macanhan, Carmen; Mambuaya, Indahag, among others.

Onsite relocation sites are in the barangays of Puntod, Consolacion, FS Catanico, Kauswagan, Camaman-an, Cugman, Carmen, Bugo; Buena Oro, Macasandig; Balulang, Lapasan; Upper Bontong and Bolonsiri, Camaman-an; Macabalan, Lapasan, and Bonbon.

The report indicates that as of 2012, the city was able to assist some 306 landless urban poor associations in the city.

CAGAYAN de Oro City–– The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency Region 10 (PDEA) has identified five marijuana plantation sites in Bukidnon said director Emerson L. Margate during the first quarter meeting of the Regional Peace and Order Council (RPOC) region 10 last February 8 here.

He specified that these plantation sites are located in Manolo Fortich, Cabanglasan, San Fernando, Baungon, and Talakag

towns.

In his report, Bukidnon, it reveals, has the most drugaffected barangays meaning it had a barangay with at least one clandestine laboratory, chemical warehouse or drug den, 99 moderately affected with at least one (1) drug pusher per barangay and 12 slightly affected encompassing at least one drug user in each barangay.

Second most infiltrated province in Region 10 is Misamis Occidental with

91 drug-affected barangays; next is Misamis Oriental with 69 and Lanao del Norte with 64. Camiguin is the least affected with 19 affected barangays.

Cagayan de Oro City alone has 36 drug affected barangays according to director Margate, a total of 413 in the whole region.

The award was given by the JCI Senator and also the Chair of the Project W.A.T.C.H, Elizabeth H D. Katigbak. Aside from the plaque of recognition, he received cash prized of Php. 15,000 and a big wall clock from the Department for his time and efforts.

This fast and strong girl is Joanna Rean V. Saguirel, a grade V pupil in Alviola Village Central Elementary School. She is qualified to fight for the Regional level competition at the City of Cabadbaran on March 1-7, 2013.

The coach, Annaluz V. Saguirel who is also the mother of Joanna talked her daughter’s extra dedication of the sport. Despite of his feminine looks, she was able to survive the trainings and competitions where most girls shun away.

The silver medal received by Joanna gave honour to AVCES family and the entire Southeast District I.

AVCIS holds Early Registration Day

Southeast Butuan District 1 had a blissful 2012 year and it was ended with a thanksgiving celebration during their Christmas party last December 21, 2012 in Green Haven at Brgy. Mabuhay, Bayugan City. The Christmas Party gave a relaxing feeling to all the teachers who gone through tough and work-loaded schedules of 2012. The excellent ambiance offered by Green Haven added their unwinding more fulfilling.

Last January 26, 2013, Alviola Village Central Integrated School (AVCIS) successfully conducted the Nationwide Early Registration Day for the school year 20132014.

The principal and teachers informed and encouraged the parents and guardians especially to those who have differently able, out of school youth and children with learning difficulties to avail the early registration.

Many parents were encouraged and registered their children in the school. Incoming Kinder, Grade One and High School were on the top of the list in the registration form.

The assigned teachers in these grades were excited and challenged to meet the new set of pupils for the next school year.

The Early Registration peacefully ended without any untoward incident.

The strong determination to acquire more knowledge in making action researches had driven many school teachers from various schools in Caraga Region to attend the rare globally-organized seminar in Butuan City. This was the “International Seminar on Educational Research” hosted by Southeast Asian Institute of Educational Training Incorporated last February 15-17, 2013 at Balanghai Hotel and Convention Center (BHCC), Butuan City. The seminar had a theme entitled “Teaching and Writing Research towards a Globally Competitive Education” and it was open to any teachers in our region either working in public or private schools who were interested to learn additional knowhow in writing “Action Research”.

The seminar offered worldwide recognized experts and veterans resource speakers from the Philippines, Indonesia, and the United States of America. Dr. Ida Karnasih

who came from State University of Medan (SUM), Indonesia discussed on the topics of “Professional Development through Research” and of “Action Research for Teacher Development”. After his discussion, he conducted immediately an actual application of what he had said through his workshop called as “Workshop on Action Research Writing”. Dr. Dennis Berg, the second resource speaker, came from California State University (CSU), Fullerton, U.S.A. and he had thorough discussions on the topic he himself entitled as “Teaching Research and Visible Learning”.

The last speaker, our country’s pride, Dr. Marilyn Balagtas, came from Philippine Normal University (PNU), discussed on “Research Writing Process”.

The seminar was held with tremendous success and it made the teachers armed with new knowledge against the battle of illiteracy.

The second Division Management Committee Conference (MANCOM) was held last February 15, 2013 at Balanghai Hotel Convention Center, Butuan City and it was held as tributes to its members/retirees and to Dr. Daylinda J. Tampus, Retired School Division Superintendent and also its member, for her exemplary achievements in education.

The conference commenced at 8 o’clock in the morning with Maria Dinah D. Abalos, EPS I in English and Division Journalism Coordinator was the host. The new Division Schools Superintendent Josita B. Carmen, CESO V

gave her inspirational talked while Christopher C. Mabale, CPA, MBA and the Director II of Butuan City Field Office Civil Service discussed about Civil Service Matters and Walk-Through on Professional Ethics.

Camiguin division journalism coordinator for English, Luisito Asero said 14 campus journalists from the province will be joining the National Schools Press Conference (NSPC) in Ormoc City this April.

Meanwhile, sharing the top spot, this year with Camiguin is the Ozamiz City Schools Division (OCSD) which dominated the Elementary Level category.

GUIDELINES TO IMPROVE PARENTS ATTENDANCE

Being a classroom teacher for almost eight years, I have already experienced a lot of headaches and setbacks calling for a PTA meeting. However my experiences and personal researches have made me discover some guidelines on how to improve the attendance of parents during PTA meeting.

Here are they: 1. Send letter of invitation to the parents or 2. Write the letter of the meeting on the board and let your pupils copy the content of the letter in their notebook.

3. Remind the parents about the meeting personally.

4. Try to involve the PTA Officers in disseminating the information.

5. Give the officers particularly the PTA president the chance to run the meeting.

6. S t a r t t h e m e e t i n g a s

7. Be specific of the agenda.

8. Discourage the mentality of parents that meetings are called solely for the purpose of collecting contribution or donation to finance a school project. A PTA meeting is conducted in such a way that individual parent could be given the chance to air his views in discussions called for such a purpose.

9. Serve a snack.

10. Give due recognition to the active parents in the PTA meetings by means of awarding plaque or certificate of appreciation during closing exercises.

The above guidelines have already been tried by the writer and proven very effective in conducting PTA meeting.

Misiona Last November 27, 2012 Tuesday at 9:00 to 10:00 in the morning, Alviola Village Central Elementary School (AVCES) simultaneously conducted Araw ng Pagbasa (Day of Reading) in support of the Ten-Point Basic Education Agenda of the Aquino administration and the institutionalization of the “Every Child a Reader Program” (ECARP).

This celebration promotes reading and literacy among pupils

and students in both public and private schools.

AVCES Teachers organized varied activities such as; storytelling, silent and oral reading, verse choir, poem and declamation contest using Ninoy’s famous speeches. They also used different reading materials like interesting stories from books and charts.

One’s dietary choices will impact on how fast or how delayed the onset of aging can be. The earlier you start in your choice of healthy diet the greater the benefit you will have.

Exercise is as important as diet. By keeping active, the muscles are strengthened, thereby improving balance, and it also improves the cardiovascular health.

Since it is never true that one’s mental ability decreases with growing old, it is to your advantage as you age, to keep the mind active and sharp. Like our muscles, our brain will also shrink with misuse! And, yes, always try to look well: the signs of aging should not disturb nor make you less conscious on how you look.

One’s attitude and outlook determines one’s response to a given circumstance. To enter the golden years is to be viewed with optimism: for one has so much wisdom and maturity to share to the younger generation....

4P beneficiaries get P18.5M seed capital

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Feb. 13 (PIA) -- A total of P18,523,000 seed capital from the Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP) of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has been released to 3,435 Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino beneficiaries in Lanao del Norte province recently.

These beneficiaries come from 181 Self-Employment Assistance sa Kaunlaran Areas (SKAs)

in the province organized

by Project Development Officers of SLP, in coordination with Pantawid Pamilya field workers.

Under the livelihood program, beneficiaries are allowed to get loans ranging from P5,000 to P10,00 for their livelihood projects, Atty. Araceli F. Solamillo, DSWD Field Office 10 Regional Director, said.

These loans, which are community-based that do not bear any interest and do not need any collateral,

are payable in one year so that others can also borrow under the same set of arrangements, Solamillo said.

In Kapatagan town, the 57 SKAs with 1,035 members received P5,772,000 while the 41 SKAs with 865 members in Lala were granted P4,442,000.

The Pantawid Pamilya beneficiaries of the interior municipalities ofNunungan, Salvador, and Sapad received P400,000; P1,330,000, and P875,000, respectively.

Meanwhile, Sultan Naga Dimaporo town beneficiaries with 50 SKAs have P5,704,000 for their seed capital loan.

These beneficiaries, according to their project proposal, will be engaging in different types of livelihood projects such as handicraft making, hog fattening, cooking, buyand-sell, among others.

The SKA members are all Pantawid Pamilya Set 1 grantees.

Aside from the 4P beneficiaries, qualified

to borrow are those listed in the National Housing Targeting System (NHTS), Solamillo added.

To ensure the success of the SLP, a five-component program that starts with a partnership-building with the community, local government units have been developed by DSWD. Included in the process is the social preparation involving a Participatory Livelihood Issue Analysis and Value Chain Analysis, as well as Financial Literacy and Self-Awareness

for the beneficiaries.

Capacity-building, including a Business Development Service and three to five-day trainings for the beneficiaries follow, after which the funding for the Micro Finance Institutions (MFI) comes about.

For sustainability of the program, DSWD-10 extends technical assistance and equips the beneficiaries with a management tool which the beneficiaries themselves implement.

RAFI launches children’s book THE Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) will hold a book launch of Akong Bugsay on Feb. 19 at the Eduardo Aboitiz Hall of the Eduardo Aboitiz Development Studies Center.

Akong Bugsay, which is written by Amaya C. Aboitiz, is an illustrated bilingual children’s book that teaches the famous Bugsay principle of RAFI President Roberto “Bobby” E. Aboitiz through the story of Andoy and his father who is a fisherman.

The Bugsay Principle is about having a goal, planning well, and working hard to achieve one’s goal. The program includes storytelling and interaction with the author.

Copies of the book will be sold at the venue at Php 150 each while the coloring book costs Php 50. For every book sold during the launch, a copy of the coloring book will be given to RAFI Dolores Aboitiz Children’s Fund’s day care centers.

Reds snatch militiaman

BUTUAN City––Armed men believed to be members of the New People’s Army (NPA) abducted a militiaman in Tagbina town in Surigao del Sur on Thursday.

Caraga police spokesman Supt.

Martin Gamba said Ronald Macasarte, 26, a civilian active auxiliary assigned at the patrol base of the Philippine Army’s 23rd Infantry Battalion in Barangay Sta. Juana, Tagbina town was on his way to his farm when armed communist rebels snatched him at around 3:30 in the afternoon.

Police said the rebels were led

by Alias Henry of SECOM 14 under the Northeasten Mindanao Regional Committee.

Military and police personnel in the area have mobilized their intelligence monitoring to track down the abductors while rescue operation continued, Gamba said.
