Red Cross provides aid for 280,000 typhoon survivors MANILA, - The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) are continuing their effort to help victims of Typhoon Bopha (locally known as Pablo).

More than a month after the typhoon swept away communities in eastern Mindanao and left more than 1,800 people dead or missing, needs are still immense. In Davao Oriental province, almost 95 per cent of the roads, houses and crops have been destroyed.

The ICRC and the Philippine Red Cross worked hard to respond to the emergency as it occurred, and are now attending to food, clean water, shelter, health care and other needs with the aim of helping people resume their normal lives.

The ICRC and the Philippine Red Cross have scaled up joint operations after their initial emergency response.

These efforts have focused on: 1) setting up a field clinic in Baganga to respond to the most urgent needs until normal facilities are fully functional again; 2) making supplies available so that people can take immediate steps to remedy their lack of shelter; and 3) providing food, potable water and basic household items to the neediest so that they can concentrate on rebuilding their lives.

Enhancing local health care "Most of the health facilities in Baganga were

either damaged or totally destroyed," said Dr Gundula Epp-Graak, who works at the newly established Red Cross Basic Health-care Unit in Baganga, a community of more than 53,000 people.

"We hope to bring back the level of medical services that existed before typhoon Bopha swept the area."

Since it opened on 3 January, the health-care unit has already attended to more than 800 patients, and is now receiving 100 to 120 patients a day.

Most of the consultations are related to acute respiratory infections, fever, acute watery diarrhoea, skin diseases and open wounds.

Among those being treated are people with chronic diseases who have run out of their usual medications.

Owing to the widespread damage caused by the typhoon, they face a difficult time obtaining more of the drugs they need, which adds to the high level of stress they are already coping with as they try to rebuild their lives.

"Many of them do not have enough money any more to buy their drugs in the local pharmacy," said Dr Epp-Graak.

The medical staff at the health-care unit have also been treating many women

and children, like Liezel Julian and her seven-monthold infant, who both had a bad cough, cold and fever.

After hearing about the unit from a tricycle (tuk-tuk) driver, mother and baby went to receive medical treatment.

"I am very happy that the Red Cross is here giving us this service for free.

We lost everything during the typhoon – our house, livelihood, even food to eat," said Liezel.

The ICRC, in cooperation with the Philippine Red Cross, has set up a health-care unit in Baganga municipality in Davao Oriental province to attend to the pressing needs of the people around the area.

The clinic, made up of six tents, is being supported by the Japanese, Norwegian, German, Canadian, Hong Kong and Finnish Red Cross national societies.

The ICRC has provided construction materials to build the Philippine Red Cross's advanced medical post, which is also providing much-needed medical care to people affected by the typhoon in Baganga.

Philippine Red Cross decided to give priority in their initial emergency response to providing food and some basic household supplies. By mid-January, the organizations had already provided a one-month supply of food and cooking pots, jerrycans, mosquito nets, soap and tarpaulins for over 280,000 people in the three hardesthit provinces of Davao Oriental, Compostela Valley and Surigao del Sur. Additional distributions of food have begun in the provinces and will continue over the coming weeks.

Shelter kits, which include nails, hammer and wires, have been distributed to 54,000 people in Boston and Cateel municipalities in Davao Oriental.

After the typhoon, detainees in Compostela Valley provincial jail were left with damaged facilities and without water and electricity.

The ICRC, which monitors the treatment and living conditions of detainees, and had been working in the area for decades, donated building materials to help repair damage in the jail.

Improving access to clean water In Cateel and Baganga, two municipalities of Davao Oriental, around 19,000 people have already benefited from clean drinkingwater stations set up by the ICRC and the Philippine Red Cross and from water delivered by truck to eight barangays (villages).

The ICRC has also donated materials for the repair of the water systems in Cateel and Baganga, which will benefit an additional 6,500 people. The ICRC has likewise provided Compostela Valley Provincial Hospital and New Bataan Rural Health Unit in Compostela Valley with supplies needed to repair severely damaged water pipelines. The MOU is designed to jointly develop immediate-temporary evacuation centers and formal settlements in various relocation sites.

God can take any two people, no matter how mismatched, and mold them into two people who are perfect for each other.

And I can really appreciate the difficult lives many of

these public school teachers undergo, with their meager incomes and snotty and airy superiors.

During those times, both my father and my mother were not even receiving their pay checks anymore as, right after signing or endorsing them, those checks immediately had to go to the creditors who have lent them money before the 15th and 30th of every month. My mommy and daddy had to borrow in between paydays, so we can have something to spend on our basic necessities, considering the very low salaries they were

receiving back then.

My brothers and I had to do our own household chores like cleaning the house, preparing our food, washing our clothes, and, occasionally, selling magazines and iced candy to earn a few pesos here and there.

It was only the unrelenting desire of Daddy and Mommy for each one of us, their children, to continue with our studies no matter how hard life was, that we were goaded or inspired to really strive to finish our education. Davao City targets 5 ,000 new jobs in IT-BPO sector

DAVAO CITY, -- About 5,000 jobs are expected to be added to the Information Technology- Business Process Outsourcing (IT-BPO) industry in Davao City.

Bert Barriga, President of ICT Davao, an umbrella organization of IT groups in Davao City, said that with the present 16,000 IT-BPO workforce in the city by year’s end they are hoping it would go up by 21,000.

Barriga said that big call centers will be locating in the city declining to name

these companies as a matter of policy among investor locators. One of the companies will be located at the soon-to-be-completed Abreeza Corporate Center.

Last year, the city added 5,000 more jobs to the IT BPO industry with the opening of BPO companies such as VXI Global whose contact center is located at Robinsons Cybergate in Bajada.

VXI Global required about 3,500 agents alone.

The company which occupies a 5,000 square meter contact center facility is one of the biggest BPO

companies doing business in the city.

“Many existing companies here are adding people.”

Barriga describing the expansion of existing contact centers and the coming of new locators as contributing to a heightened demand for IT workers in Davao City.

“This is already a severe abuse of the right to protest.

The protesters have practically gone beyond the boundaries of the right to protest. So it’s just right the government steps inside to prevent further deterioration of the conditions in the university,” said the school official.

The policemen detailed at the university, however, have maintained “maximum tolerance” against the rallyists.

Also, the school’s security personnel are told to stay put to prevent blood from spilling on the university.

Cedric Mantawil, interior and local government officer of the Kabacan LGU, said the third wave of the protests at the university was without permit.

Mantawil said Kabacan Mayor George Tan refused to grant the rally organizers another permit because of their failure to observe the restrictions that were agreed upon when they were first allowed on January 7 to hold the mass action.

“I would say the rally was not done peacefully. The protesters used big trucks to prevent vehicles and students from entering the campus. Also, I even witnessed a scene when the protesters did not even give Mayor Tan due respect when he visited the rally site last week,” said Mantawil.

Despite this, Mantawil stressed the local government will not meddle into the affairs of the USM, “even if the rally organizers have sought intervention from local officials to support them of their move to throw Dr. Derije out from his post.”

A

good friend musician of mine once shared to me one of his bad experiences as an instrumentalist.

Over the years my good friend has never failed a single event when he's hired to play.

On one occasion my friend and another musician were both hired for a certain event and since they have worked together for many times, there couldn't have been a problem at all.

The unexpected happened; the other musician didn't show up at the event when in fact a commitment was made with the client.

T h e re w a s n o t e x t message nor a call from the other musician, worse my friend found out afterwards that this other musician was also playing in another event with the exact same time they were supposed to play together.

The experience was really bad right? I myself wouldn't want to be in that situation.

The relationship between two musicians was strained.

What more with RESPECT? Again as I have emphasized in one of my articles entitled "work ethics" (The Cagayan de Oro TIMES) that is deeply rooted in our personal values and respect is a core characteristic that an individual must develop.

As the saying goes "you cannot give what you don't have" ... Therefore you cannot truly respect others , if you don't truly respect yourself first.

Even if we have discussed "respect" over the years within the four walls of our classrooms, we should purposefully and continually remind ourselves of the value because it helps us stand on the ground.

Aside from the great lesson I learned "respecting time", "respecting myself ” is a day to day step I take to keep me reminded of this value.

Believe it or not as I am writing this article, I am actually quarantined in my room for the whole day because of frequent asthma attacks.

I decided to stay home today because I respect the need of my body to rest, but as I made that decision I had to inform my supervisor of my health condition so that she can inform the parents and my students that I cannot hold voice classes. With that I exercised respect for their time.

I am a steward of God's gift that's why I do not overuse it, as my respect I take time to rest and put it to proper use.

I respect my editor at the CDOTIMES that's why I'm submitting within the deadline.

D e ve l opi ng re s p e c t indeed starts within. It has to be incorporated in our personal values system.

So that when we face various situations in life, whether in the music field in my case or the like, we can respond always with RESPECT. Just like another musician I know and I secretly salute this person.

There was a great offer for this musician but to accept the offer means stepping on another musician.

What is e ven more amazing is that this musician secretly informed the other musician of the offer and declined the offer because of deep RESPECT for the senior musician.

As I end this article I would like to address these quest ions to e ver yone whatever field you are in.

How deep is your respect to yourself, to your gifts, to others? If you we're placed in that same situation with that last musician I mentioned, will you be able to give it up or not? Your answer to the questions clearly reveals whether you truly value respect or not.

Liceo High wins fifth Championship title in regional broadcasting tilt

his is what the Department of Education OIC Regional Director Dr. Allan G. Farnazo, CESO V, emphasized during the grand opening ceremonies of the Regional Schools Press Conference 2013 in La Salle University, Ozamiz City.

In the five-day series of journalistic feats, over 2,500 delegates from 14 divisions in Northern Mindanao battled out to prove who the true best in the region is.

For the fifth time in a row, Liceo U High School is this year’s Champion in the Radio Broadcasting competition-English category, besting 13 others in all of Region X. The team was composed of Cinderella Faye Obenita, Joanna Ruiz, Maria Monica Borja, Trinity May Gurrea, Xerczhiel Faye Rio, Aubrei Nicole Ipulan, and John Vincent Mangubat.

They were collectively known as The Liceonette Patrol. Several awards were also given to the group with Obeñita for Best News Anchor, Ruiz and Borja for Best in Infomercial, Gurrea for Best in Technical Application, and Mangubat, Ipulan, and Rio for Best News Presenters.

They will advance to the national finals to be held on April 4-7 this year, in Ormoc City.

In the Filipino category, the team, with anchors Eden Mae Selim and Spencer Palen, news presenters Guila Denice Simene, Michelle Ann Dablio and Connie Pogay, technical applicator Aniemhar Cuadrasal and infomercial presenter Donnie Marie Plaza, bagged the Second Place trophy with other awards: Best in Technical Application, 2nd place Best News Presenter, and 3rd place Best News Anchor.

Sidelight to the writing and speaking competitions was the Tagisan ng Talino where the Cagayan de Oro team, represented by Liceo U, tailed at third. The five-woman team were decorated with medals and a trophy.

The Tagisan ng Talino team was composed of Obenita, Gurrea, Ruiz, Pogay, and Selim.

The Liceo U PressCon participants were under the tutelage of Mr. Michael S. Villamor for English and Mrs. Myerna S. Ramos for Filipino.
