BUTUAN CITY – ViceMayor Lawrence Lemuel Fortun revealed if elected Agusan del Norte First District congressman in the May, 2013 elections, he will work for the lowering of the age requirement for senior citizens to be eligible for government pension. In a press statement, Fortun said that under Republic Act No. 9994 or the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010, indigent senior citizens aged 77 years and above who are sickly, frail or disabled, and are not
receiving any pension or support from their families, are eligible to receive pension from the Department of Social Welfare and Development. “It deserves deep thinking that under RA 9994, the definition of a senior citizen is when he or she reaches 60 years old, yet, the senior citizen only gets to enjoy socialized pension upon reaching the age of 77,” Fortun noted. According to Fortun, he will work for amending some provisions of RA 9994 to lower the age pension | page 10
